🏆 Hays High Athletics Hall of Fame inductees and ceremony

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Men's Basketball announced the addition of six players for the upcoming 2025-26 season. The Tigers announced one of the six back in December of 2024 when Nebraska high school standout Ben Johnson committed. The latest additions include two transfers and three freshmen.

Both transfers are coming to FHSU from other NCAA Division II institutions. Juju Ramirez, a native of Lawrence, Kan., is transferring from Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire, while Blake Danitschek comes to FHSU from Northwest Missouri State. The freshmen joining Ben Johnson include Tegen Curley, David Johnson, and Zack Sharkey.

Ramirez had a strong junior season at Saint Anselm in 2024-25, averaging 12.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, ranking third on his team in both categories. He started all 30 games for the season. He ranked second on the team in assists, averaging 2.8 per contest. Prior to his time at Saint Anselm, Ramirez played two years at NCAA Division I affiliate University of Northern Colorado. Though he is a native of Kansas, he played his final year of high school in New Hampshire at New Hampton School.

Danitschek was a member of the Northwest Missouri State men's basketball team for four years from 2021-2025. He saw two seasons of action on the court, which included the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. He did not play in any contests last year due to injury and his first year with the Bearcats was a redshirt year. He shot 50 percent from 3-point range during the 2023-24 campaign. The Bearcats won MIAA titles in both of his seasons on the floor. A native of Wichita, Danitschek attended Kapaun Mt. Carmel High School where he was an all-state and all-league selection.

Ben Johnson capped his storied prep career at Kearney High School with a Nebraska Super State Second Team selection. He was a Super State Third Team pick his junior year and earned all-state honors his final three years of high school. In his senior year, he averaged 19.9 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 7.0 assists per game. He also set a new career record for rebounds at Kearney High School. Johnson was named the Kearney Hub Territory Boys Basketball Player of the Year back-to-back years (2024 and 2025).

David Johnson is a native of the New York City area and just played a year of prep ball at Bridgeport Prep in Connecticut. He played in high school at St. Benedict's Prep in New Jersey. At Bridgeport Prep, he earned an all-conference and all-defensive team selection. At St. Benedict's, he averaged 12.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game in his final season, earning all-state, all-county, and all-county tournament honors.

Tegan Curley is a native of Marshfield, Mo., but just finished playing a year of prep ball at The New School in Arkansas. As a junior at Mansfield High School in Missouri, he was an all-state and all-conference selection when he averaged 18 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

Zack Sharkey is a native of Lowell, Ind., but crossed the state line daily to play his high school career at Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, Ill. He was a two-time all-state selection in Class 3A and a two-time Chicago All-Suburbs selection. He averaged 19.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 2.1 steals per game as a senior.

The six newcomers join eight returners on the team for the upcoming 2025-26 season.

🏀 FHSU men add six for the 2025-26 season

Brian Thomas Brungardt, age 38 of Hays, Kansas passed away at his
home on June 18, 2025, in Hays.

He was born June 2, 1987, in Hays to James R. and Michele R.
(Morton) Brungardt, the second of their three sons.

In his younger days Brian enjoyed a number of family activities.
Visits to each set of grandparents over the holidays took place annually.
Summer vacations to Colorado always brought pleasant memories.

Smiles were provided by many rides and activities at the county
and state fairs. Brian developed close friendships with a number of school
classmates. He was active in Cub and Boy Scouts activities at this time and
enjoyed camping out with his fellow scouts. Many weekends during the summer
were spent at the family cabin at Cedar Bluff Lake. An annual family activity
was "June Birthdays" - Brian and his brother Neil and three of his
six cousins all had birthdays in June. Along with the great food that mom provided,
great times were had on the boat riding on a tube and fishing with advice given
from his older brother Neil. Brian's biggest catch was when he hooked dad's ear
up by the dam. He enjoyed golf cart and jet ski rides - first as a passenger
and by himself later when he was older.

Brian graduated from Hays High in 2006 and from Fort Hays State
University in 2013, with a degree in history. During these years he gained
valuable experience from his work at Carlos O'Kelly's, Humane Society of the
High Plains, Adronics/Elrob, Hays Daily News, Quizno's and Pepsi. Another
milestone in Brian's life that had a positive impact on him was his trip to
Spain with two friends that involved walking a portion of the Camino de
Santiago over several days with the destination being the Cathedral of Santiago
de Compostela in Galicia, Spain.

He had a passion for history and often visited museums when
traveling. This interest started at an early age - as a kid he was crazy about
dinosaurs. He knew of so many species and could identify them by the mounted
skeletons. He expanded his interest in museums to include virtually every item
on display.

Many of Brian's family travels were not complete without a zoo
stop. It didn't matter what size the zoo was — he was ready to go.

Music had a special place in Brian's interests. He played an
instrument in the middle school band as well as trying his hand at playing
guitar in his free time at home. Like so many of his friends, Brian had quite a
collection of games, CD's and DVD’s. Many songs and videos were sent to family
and friends.

Brian enjoyed concerts and even attended (Heaven forbid) a number
of classic rock concerts with his parents. By far his greatest enjoyment was
going to concerts of groups popular with him and his friends. His younger
brother Brett went with him frequently - a favorite for them was the annual
Mayhem Festival.

Sports and food were also favorites with Brian. He got a lot of
enjoyment attending the Wichita Thunder hockey games as well as an occasional
baseball game with the family in Oklahoma City. Golf his way was with a
frisbee. Brian was game to try about any kind of food set in front of him. You
never knew what kind of unique combinations he would create. It was usually
made spicy hot from his condiment collection. He did find out that you don't
use sriracha sauce like ketchup.

Brian was witty and articulate with a great sense of humor.
Sometimes this talent was not understood by some but overall most people got
it. He loved his cat, Kittyoko, that he inherited from a friend. She was such a
beautiful cat with quite the attitude. She probably only cared for two people
in her lifetime and Brian was one of them.

He is survived by his parents, James and Michele Brungardt of Hays
and his brothers Neil of Beverly, KS and Brett of Oklahoma City. Aunts and
uncles Tom and Judy Brungardt of Pratt, KS, Allen Brungardt of Colorado
Springs, Craig Morton of Atwood, KS and Mike and Carla Starns of Independence,
KS.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Tom and Maud
Brungardt Sr, Edward and Marge Morton and an aunt, Barbara Morton.

Brian loved deeply and was deeply loved. He will be missed.

A celebration of Brian's life will be held at 11:00 AM on
Wednesday, July 16, 2025, with a memorial visitation starting at 10:00 AM at
Keithley Funeral Homes and Crematory - Brock's Chapel, located at 2509 Vine St
in Hays.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested to

Jonda Kaye Keiswetter, 68, of Hays, passed away
Monday, June 30, 2025 at HaysMed.

She was born January 14, 1957 in Norton County, Kansas
to Keith and June (Sprague) Keiswetter.&nbsp; While
living on a farm northeast of Lenora, Jonda attended school in Lenora, and in
1972, when her family moved to Norton she transferred to Norton Community High
School, graduating in 1975.&nbsp; Jonda continued her education to become a Registered
Nurse and retired from Rush County Memorial Hospital in LaCrosse in 2024.&nbsp; 

Jonda loved to work on puzzles and handmade craft
items.&nbsp; She was an avid gardener, enjoyed
taking her produce to the farmer’s market, loved her chickens, and was
frequently referred to as “the Chicken Lady”.&nbsp;
She was a very devoted Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals and KU
basketball fan.

Survivors include her son Chance Keiswetter of Hays,
sister Deborah (Steve) Persinger of Lenora, brother Louis (Jana) Keiswetter of
Norton, and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents, Keith and
June Keiswetter. 

A memorial service will be held at a later date.&nbsp; Memorial contributions may be made to the

Yuengling Flight Golf Cart finalist from Mr. K's Foodtown named

Grow Hays has announced it has two new tenants for the Microfactory.

The $4.5 million, 30,000-square-foot facility opened in March 2024, but has not had any manufacturing tenants until now.

The Microfactory is designed to be a space that manufacturers can rent at lower than the market rate as they launch new businesses or product lines.

The two new tenants were set to start their leases in July, but the names of those businesses have not yet been released.

One of the tenants is a regional engineering firm that will set up a lab to test soil compaction and concrete, Doug Williams, executive director of Grow Hays, said.

The engineering firm will occupy about 2,500 square feet.

A Canadian manufacturer will be signing a lease in mid-July for 5,000 to 10,000 square feet of the facility.

The facility has about 28,000 square feet of shop space and 2,000 square feet dedicated to offices.

Williams said the facility will not be quite half full once the two new companies are in place.

"We are still working with some others," Williams said. "We had one that did not work out because of insurance. That is one of the challenges in an incubator space like this. You have to have some level of compatibility between your tenants because they are occupying, in essence, the same building."

The facility was partially funded by a $2.6 million base grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce.&nbsp;The Patterson Family Foundation and Robert E. and Patrica Schmidt Foundation each contributed $500,000 to the project. The Innovation Center in Norton bridged the gap with a $750,000 interest-free loan.

Williams emphasized that the city or county did not fund the Microfactory and is not owned by either.

"The city and county haven't invested a dime," Williams said. "They won't invest a dime in this structure. ... There have been no local tax dollars invested in this project.

"The purpose of it is to, in the long term, develop a space where we can generate and build small manufacturers and have them grow," he said. "I struggle because I see negative comments on social media. I struggle to see that this is ever a bad thing. We are a not-for-profit organization.

"We own this space to provide space for prospective tenants who are ultimately employing people and growing their businesses. It costs the local taxpayers nothing, and it's going to pay dividends to this community for the next 50 to 100 years."

Williams said he did not see anything negative about the project, but he has seen some misunderstandings about the project among community members.

Grow Hays is paying property taxes on the building, which will be allocated to the local school capital outlay fund.

"We are offering the space at a small fraction of what it would cost a small manufacturer to build a building or locate elsewhere," Williams said.

He said the idea is that a manufacturer starts in the Microfactory. Then, after three to five years, it grows large enough to move into its own facility.

"It's an annuity that will continue to pay dividends to this community for a long, long time," Williams said.

With an unemployment rate of about 2.7%, Hays lacks the workforce to recruit a large manufacturer.&nbsp;

"We have to take this approach of starting small and building new organizations through entrepreneurship and growth and organic growth as opposed to the smoke-stack business moving in and operating here," Williams said.

 </figure>The facility has about 28,000 square feet of shop space and 2,000 square feet dedicated to offices.Williams said the facility will not be quite half full once the two new companies are in place."We are still working with some others," Williams said. "We had one that did not work out because of insurance. That is one of the challenges in an incubator space like this. You have to have some level of compatibility between your tenants because they are occupying, in essence, the same building."The facility was partially funded by a $2.6 million base grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce.&nbsp;The Patterson Family Foundation and Robert E. and Patrica Schmidt Foundation each contributed $500,000 to the project. The Innovation Center in Norton bridged the gap with a $750,000 interest-free loan.Williams emphasized that the city or county did not fund the Microfactory and is not owned by either."The city and county haven't invested a dime," Williams said. "They won't invest a dime in this structure. ... There have been no local tax dollars invested in this project."The purpose of it is to, in the long term, develop a space where we can generate and build small manufacturers and have them grow," he said. "I struggle because I see negative comments on social media. I struggle to see that this is ever a bad thing. We are a not-for-profit organization."We own this space to provide space for prospective tenants who are ultimately employing people and growing their businesses. It costs the local taxpayers nothing, and it's going to pay dividends to this community for the next 50 to 100 years."Williams said he did not see anything negative about the project, but he has seen some misunderstandings about the project among community members.Grow Hays is paying property taxes on the building, which will be allocated to the local school capital outlay fund."We are offering the space at a small fraction of what it would cost a small manufacturer to build a building or locate elsewhere," Williams said.He said the idea is that a manufacturer starts in the Microfactory. Hays natives named to Washburn University Dean's List for spring semester

Ernest V. Pfeifer, Sr., age 87, of Ellis, Kansas passed away
peacefully July 4, 2025, at the Ellis Good Samaritan Society, Ellis, Kansas.

He was born in Hays, Kansas on September 24, 1937, to Ben and
Martina (Fross) Pfeifer. Ernest graduated from St. Joseph Military Academy in
1957 and married Rosemary (Engel) Pfeifer on September 28, 1957. Ernest was a
lifelong farmer and rancher raising his family on a farm north of Ellis, Kansas
and was active in the community serving on numerous boards.

Ernest is survived by his wife, Rosemary, of the home and his six
children, sons, Ernie Jr. Pfeifer (Sherry), David Pfeifer (LuAnn), Jerry
Pfeifer (Nancy), and Jim Pfeifer (Linda) all of Ellis, Kansas and daughters,
Christine Gist (Mike), Hays, Kansas and Sandy Rome (James), Ellis, Kansas.
Twelve grandchildren, Ernest Pfeifer III (Ann), Lynn Leiker (Landon), Jessica
Klaus (Joe), Sarah Gist, Danielle Flinn (Todd), Dylan Pfeifer, (friend,

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Kaitlyn G.&nbsp;Windholz, 21, Victoria, was westbound on Buckeye Road at U.S. 183. The driver&nbsp;failed to yield the right of way at the intersection. A 2019 Buick Enclave driven by Anne M.&nbsp; Hohnholt, 47, Alma, Nebraska, struck&nbsp;the drivers side of Hyundia.

EMS transported both drivers to Hays Medical Center. They were both properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Police Commander, Benjamin A. Kelso&nbsp;’14, ’17, San Diego, Calif.

Benjamin Kelso is an experienced and highly motivated police commander with the San Diego Police Department. With 35 years of dedicated service, Kelso has excelled in numerous roles, including police captain, lieutenant, and sergeant, overseeing divisions such as neighborhood policing, traffic, youth services, and homeland security. He is known for his expertise in community policing, collaborative partnerships, and leadership in developing high-performing teams.

A graduate of the FBI National Academy, Kelso holds two advanced degrees from FHSU&nbsp;–&nbsp;including a Master of Liberal Studies in Organizational Leadership and a Master of Professional Studies in Criminal Justice.

Kelso serves on several boards and has contributed as an adjunct faculty member for the University of San Diego since 2015. In 2022, he was recognized as one of San Diego's Top 50 Black Leaders of Influence. Kelso is a passionate advocate for community engagement and has been instrumental in building trust between law enforcement and local communities.

Michelle Dillard ’11, Highlands Ranch, Colo.

Michelle Dillard is a fifth-grade math teacher in&nbsp;Littleton Public Schools at Ford Elementary School in Centennial, Colo. She believes that all students can be math people and have the ability to thrive. Dillard began her journey in education after earning a Bachelor of Arts from Dallas Baptist University and a Master of Education in English for Speakers of Other Languages from FHSU.

She has been a classroom teacher for 20 years, with a focus on mathematics instruction and student engagement. Dillard has served on district teams in Littleton Public Schools to develop curriculum, lead professional learning, and support her school’s transition to an International Baccalaureate program. She is also an active member of the Colorado Council for Teachers of Mathematics and a National Board-Certified Teacher.

Dillard has received a Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms Program Award and was recognized with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the highest national recognition for K–12 STEM and computer science teachers. With a passion for empowering students and a commitment to global learning, Dillard continues to inspire curiosity, confidence, and a love of mathematics in every classroom she enters.

Dr. Jeffery “Jeff” Curtis ’77, Hays

Known for his devotion and untiring dedication to improving lives through cardiology, Dr. Curtis has spent his career serving others with compassion. He began his education at Fort Hays State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in General Science, and later an MD degree from the University of Kansas. Dr. Curtis completed an Internal Medicine residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center, followed by subspecialty fellowship training in cardiovascular medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was honored as an FHSU Young Alumni Award recipient in 1987. Today, Dr. Curtis is a fellow of both the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Physicians and remains board-certified in internal medicine and cardiology.

Dr. Curtis was instrumental in bringing the DeBakey Heart Institute of Kansas at Hays Medical Center to life, where he practiced until 2021. In 2022, he joined Fort Hays State University’s Health and Wellness Center as its medical director, where he continues to promote wellness for students, faculty, and staff.

Beyond medicine, he has provided generous support, leadership, and service to the Hadley Foundation, Boy Scouts of America Troop 101, the FHSU Foundation, the Symphony Society, and the Hays Arts Council. Dr. Curtis currently serves on the FHSU Foundation Board of Trustees. His career reflects a deep commitment to service, both in medicine and in the community.

Dr. Michael “Mike” Slattery ’73, ’77, ’89, Hays

Dr. Mike Slattery’s distinguished career in education spans decades, leaving a legacy at Fort Hays State University and in Kansas schools. While at FHSU, Dr. Slattery earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, along with a Master of Science in Secondary Education Administration, and an Education Specialist in Education Administration degree. &nbsp;He finished his education at Kansas State University with a Doctor of Education in Educational Administration.

After working in various Kansas school districts, Dr. Slattery taught for 22 years in FHSU’s College of Education. Following retirement, his connection to Fort Hays State has remained strong. An advocate for FHSU, Dr. Slattery regularly attends on-campus and athletic events and cheers on the Tigers any chance he can. Dr. Slattery served nine years on the Alumni Association Board of Directors and has remained a generous supporter of Fort Hays State.

He has been personally and professionally involved with the FHSU Athletic Association, the Kansas Association of Secondary School Principals, and the Koch Crime Commission Schools Task Force. A recipient of numerous honors, including the Cunningham Outstanding Educator Award, Dr. Slattery’s commitment to education extends beyond the classroom.

Dr. Sara Brungardt ’08, ’11, Scottsdale, Ariz.

Quickly becoming a standout in the field of OCD and anxiety, Dr. Sara Brungardt is a licensed professional counselor, speaker, and founder of CalmOCD.&nbsp;<a></a>She and her clinical team have created a successful practice across the Western United States in Arizona and Utah, and telehealth services in eleven other states. Dr. Brungardt holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a Master of Science degree in community counseling, both from Fort Hays State, along with a Ph.D. in general psychology from Northcentral University.

Her early career included work as a match specialist with Big Brothers Big Sisters before moving into clinical counseling and ultimately specializing in OCD and anxiety treatment. Under her guidance, CalmOCD has earned the Best of Scottsdale Award for three consecutive years based on providing evidence-based, life-changing care. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Brungardt regularly presents and leads her field at conferences and workshops across the country.

Dr. Brungardt’s patients find her expertise comforting, compassionate, and professional, reflecting her passion for the field and helping others. Through her innovative leadership and dedication to accessible, high-quality care, Dr. Brungardt is reshaping the landscape of OCD and anxiety treatment.

Jacie Hoyt ’11, Stillwater, Okla.

A standout on the court and the sidelines, Jacie Hoyt has built a reputation as one of the most dynamic leaders in women’s college basketball. She began her basketball career at Hoxie High School and went on to play at Wichita State University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree. Jacie then came to Fort Hays State University to complete her master’s degree in communication. An injury ultimately cut short Jacie’s plans to play at Fort Hays State, but she didn’t let that end her love of basketball.

Instead, she took on a graduate assistantship under FHSU women’s basketball coach Tony Hobson and pivoted her attention to coaching. After graduating, she became an assistant coach in Nevada and at Kansas State University. Jacie was named to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association 30 Under 30 in 2017 during her last season at K-State. That same year, she was named head coach of the University of Missouri-Kansas City, leading them to a regular-season championship in 2020.

Currently in her third season as head women’s basketball coach at Oklahoma State University, Jacie has been credited with one of the nation’s largest program turnarounds in the 2022-23 season. Her team finished 4th in the Big 12 and earned an NCAA berth in her first year. With a proven track record, Jacie is shaping Oklahoma State into a women’s college basketball powerhouse.

Dr. Curtis completed an Internal Medicine residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center, followed by subspecialty fellowship training in cardiovascular medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was honored as an FHSU Young Alumni Award recipient in 1987. Today, Dr. Curtis is a fellow of both the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Physicians and remains board-certified in internal medicine and cardiology.Dr. Curtis was instrumental in bringing the DeBakey Heart Institute of Kansas at Hays Medical Center to life, where he practiced until 2021. In 2022, he joined Fort Hays State University’s Health and Wellness Center as its medical director, where he continues to promote wellness for students, faculty, and staff.Beyond medicine, he has provided generous support, leadership, and service to the Hadley Foundation, Boy Scouts of America Troop 101, the FHSU Foundation, the Symphony Society, and the Hays Arts Council. While at FHSU, Dr. Slattery earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, along with a Master of Science in Secondary Education Administration, and an Education Specialist in Education Administration degree. &nbsp;He finished his education at Kansas State University with a Doctor of Education in Educational Administration.After working in various Kansas school districts, Dr. Slattery taught for 22 years in FHSU’s College of Education. Following retirement, his connection to Fort Hays State has remained strong. FHSU reveals 2025 slate of Alumni Award recipients

PARKER, Colo. –&nbsp;The Hays Larks scored 10 runs in the
final three innings and rallied for a 15-13 comeback win over the Gameday
Angels in 10 innings Saturday at Double Angel Field for the two-game series sweep.

The Larks (17-4-1, 12-4 RMBL) scored two in the first and
two in the second and led 5-1 entering the bottom of the fourth but Gameday (10-12,
6-9 RMBL) answered with eight runs in the bottom of the inning which included a
solo homer and grand slam. They added another run on an error in the fifth which
pushed their lead to 10-5 where it remained until the eighth.

The Larks started their comeback with four runs in the top
of the eighth. Taber Stokes had an RBI double, Kaleb Duncan added a sacrifice
fly and Jackson Babcock a two-run double. Stokes tied the game with a one-out
RBI single in the top of the ninth. 

The Larks took the lead back with five in the top of the 10th.
Babcock opened the inning with a double, Garrett Gruell followed with a single
then stole second, both scored on Dylan LaRue’s single. Stokes hit a three-run
homer for a 15-10 lead.

The Angels got a two-out bases loaded double which scored
three but a fly out ended the game.

Trent Baker, Dylan LaRue and Taber Stokes all had three of
the Larks 17 hits. Stokes drove in five and Baker had three RBIs.

Brooks Jones (2-0) allowed three runs on two hits with 10
strikeouts and four walks over 4 1/3 innings of relief and picked up the win.

Get ready for a week of fun for all generations as the Trego County Fair returns to WaKeeney with its signature small-town magic.

The 115th-annual fair, set for July 8-12, will feature a carnival and free family entertainment. Trego County Fair President Kathleen Fabrizius said the event will offer a sense of nostalgia for many in the community.

"A lot of the people have been to the fair since they were little kids," Fabrizius said. "They want to bring their kids and grandkids to relive all those memories."

A parade will hit the road at 10 a.m. Saturday on Main Street.

One grand event Fabrizius highlights is the 7 p.m. races at WaKeeney Speedway on July 10. Admission is $15 for adults, while children 14 years and under get in free.

Family Night begins at 5 p.m. July 9 with 4-H livestock competitions in the Livestock Arena, followed by pedal pull state fair qualifiers and kids’ games at 7 p.m. near the South Arena.

That evening's activities include a chicken catch, a frog race, a water balloon toss and a straw dig. Registration for the cornhole and washer tournaments opens at 5 p.m., with games starting at 5:30 p.m.

Fabrizius said kids will also have the opportunity to explore law enforcement and public service vehicles during the touch-a-truck event at 5:30 p.m.

The 4-H livestock shows run from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on July 10 in the Livestock Arena. Open-class competitions will also take place with a variety of categories, ranging from cooking to quilting. 115th-annual Trego County Fair set for Tuesday

&nbsp;More than 350 items of clothing were collected during the recent donation drive for Tailored for Tigers, a professional clothing closet at Fort Hays State University that offers business attire free of charge to students. 

Women Who Lead, a 501(c)3 organization that strives to make a positive difference in the Hays community, made a $2,000 cash gift to purchase garments that are in short supply.

The donation drive began in mid-April, and contributions have continued to pour in past the May 15 campaign end date. Tailored for Tigers is made possible solely through the generosity of community members, alumni, faculty, staff, and other donors.

“These contributions ensure that professional dress is available to students, helping them make a strong first impression, boosting their confidence, and preparing them for the opportunities ahead,” said Lisa Karlin, interim director of FHSU’s Career Services office.

Through Tailored for Tigers, every student enrolled at FHSU has access to business attire at no cost, removing financial barriers. During the 2024-25 academic year, 264 students visited the clothing closet and selected more than 500 items for interviews, career fairs, conferences, and other activities.

Tailored for Tigers clothing drive nets 350-plus items for FHSU students

This year’s weather has delayed harvest and left many wheat growers with fields of low-test weight and sprouted grain. This damage causes large discounts at the elevator because the grain does not meet standards for milling or export. 

Wheat that does not meet market specs still have value as livestock feed either as part of supplements for grazing cattle or in mixed diets to growing and finishing cattle.

Feeding Value and Nutritional Considerations Despite its poor appearance,&nbsp;low test weight or sprouted wheat retains much of its energy and protein content as animal feed. In fact, the nutrient composition often compares well to regular wheat: ·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Crude Protein: Often 12–14%, depending on variety and growing conditions. ·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN): Generally, 80–85%, making it a high-energy feed. ·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Sprouting Effect: Enzymatic changes during sprouting may actually increase starch digestibility, though spoilage is a concern if storage is poor. The main challenge is balancing the ration correctly. Wheat is&nbsp;high in starch and low in fiber, so overfeeding can lead to digestive upsets like&nbsp;acidosis&nbsp;or&nbsp;founder&nbsp;making feeding management a key consideration. Tips for Feeding Damaged Wheat Safely 1.&nbsp; Limit Inclusion: Start with low levels and increase gradually. Supplementing grazing cattle: limit feeding to 0.3 to 0.5% of bodyweight per feeding or as only ½ of less of a supplement fed at a higher rate. No more than 2 to 3 pounds per day for a growing calf or 4 to 6 pounds for a mature beef cow. Increase feeding frequency when feeding wheat, doubling the feeding rate and feeding every other day is not recommended. Growing and finishing cattle on mixed rations: wheat can replace part of the corn. We recommend no more than 1/3 of the total ration or ½ of the grain in the concentrate portion of the ration. Feeding management becomes more important when feeding highly digestible grains like wheat. 2.&nbsp; Process with Care: Processing increases digestibility of wheat by 20 to 30%. Coarsely rolling wheat improves digestibility but avoid fine grinding. When processing is too fine the starch in wheat is digested too fast in the rumen and increases the risk of ruminal acidosis. 3.&nbsp; Balance the Ration: Wheat should be fed with adequate&nbsp;roughage&nbsp;(hay, silage, or straw) to maintain rumen health. Avoid low-roughage low-fiber diets. 4.&nbsp; Monitor Intakes Closely: Watch for signs of overeating, scours, or bloating when feeding sprouted or damaged wheat.

Other Considerations Storage is Key: Keep wheat dry and cool. Sprouted grain with higher moisture is especially vulnerable to spoilage. Test for Mycotoxins or Mold: Sprouted wheat may be more prone to spoilage. If stored improperly, mold and toxins can develop. Always test suspect lots before feeding. Feeding downgraded wheat can be a benefit for cattle producers to gain access to a high-energy feed at a discount — provided it’s done safely and with proper nutrition support. Before incorporating low-quality wheat into your feeding program, consult with a&nbsp;livestock nutritionist&nbsp;or&nbsp;Extension specialist&nbsp;to balance the ration and ensure safety with careful management.

BOOR: Making the most of damaged wheat by feeding to beef cattle

If you’ve ever strolled through the Fort Hays State University campus during the warmer months, you’ve likely noticed the vibrant colors that line our walkways and flower beds — geraniums, lantanas, ornamental peppers, and more, arranged with care and precision. What may look like a simple seasonal refresh is, in fact, the result of countless hours of planning and hands-on work by an exceptional team of dedicated professionals: our Grounds Department.

Led by Grounds Manager Brenden Ibarra, this team works year-round to ensure our campus remains beautiful, functional, and welcoming — not only for our students, faculty, and staff, but also for the thousands of guests who visit each year. Supporting Brenden are two key leaders: Trevor Deets, our Grounds Supervisor, and Cody Norton, our Greenhouse and Landscape Supervisor.

Brenden became the manager of the grounds department last summer. His story is a true Tiger journey: he joined the crew as a student employee right out of high school, earned his agronomy degree from FHSU in 2019, and worked as an equipment operator for four years before stepping into his current role.

Brenden hit the ground running, implementing a cross-training model that encourages the team to work as one unified crew. “I wanted everyone to have the same experience going forward,” he shared. “We’re all working at the same job. We’re one big team.” His leadership, like his work ethic, reflects his belief in collaboration and an ethic of shared success. “When people start taking pride in their work and you can see the same pride I have showing up in other employees, it makes everything a lot more fun.”

Cody, who graduated from FHSU in 2015 with a biology degree, now leads the greenhouse and planting efforts, following in the footsteps of Donna Augustine, who retired last fall after 37 years of service. Cody worked closely with Donna and carries forward her passion and commitment. He collaborates with longtime employee Mike Messeck and a rotating crew of hardworking student employees who help maintain the lush landscapes our university is known for.

Cody summed it up beautifully: “It’s nice to be able to see everything we do and say, ‘Wow, we did this. We made it look nice.”

Trevor has been part of the team for nine years and has witnessed many changes over that time, including an entirely new roster of crew members. A graduate of NCK Tech with training in electrical technology and construction, Trevor brought with him a valuable skillset that extends beyond landscaping.

Trevor supervises a tight-knit crew — Travis Dreher, Dalton Pfannenstiel, Jude Lang, Gunnar Hearne, and, until recently, Doug Haberman, who retired after years of dedicated service to FHSU.

The work of the grounds department isn’t just essential — it’s visible, much like the work of our dedicated housekeeping staff. As Cody pointed out, “Our job is probably one of the few jobs on&nbsp;campus that everybody sees. We are definitely in the public eye.”

 That visibility creates moments of connection. Campus visitors often stop to share compliments or thank the team for their work. Those gestures mean a lot. They’re reminders that their effort matters — and is noticed.

They’re reminders that their effort matters — and is noticed.“Anything you see outside,” Trevor shared recently, “Grounds pretty much takes care of it.” That simple statement captures the incredible range of responsibilities his team shoulders — from planting and irrigation to snow removal and storm cleanup.A couple of weeks ago, for example, a massive tree fell on campus due to high winds. Within a short time, the crew mobilized with chainsaws, a skid steer, a bucket truck, and a trailer to remove the debris as safely and efficiently as possible.Beyond landscaping and emergency response, the grounds team also repairs and maintains their own equipment. “All the equipment breaks at some point,” Trevor said. “So, we have to have someone to fix it, too.”Their role as a one-stop shop for everything outdoors — from planting to plowing, trimming to troubleshooting — is vital to the look, feel, and function of our campus. Every perfectly trimmed lawn or blooming flower bed at Fort Hays State is the result of deep pride, quiet dedication, and a whole lot of behind-the-scenes teamwork.Trevor summed up his team’s efforts at FHSU very simply: “I take a lot of pride in my work. At the end of the day, I see what we accomplished. It is a good feeling.”We are grateful to Brenden, Trevor, Cody, and the entire crew for their commitment to excellence. They truly embody the spirit of the Tiger Nation — steady, resilient, and always working to make our home on the plains a little more beautiful every day.
