MANHATTAN, Kan. - Following his five total touchdowns in Kansas State’s 42-20 victory over No. 20 Oklahoma State, quarterback&nbsp;Avery Johnson&nbsp;was named both a Manning Award Star of the Week and to the Davey O’Brien Great 8 List on Monday.

It was the first time in his career that Johnson has been honored by the Manning Award, while it was the second time this season he has been named to the Davey O’Brien Great 8 List, the first being after the victory over Arizona.

By being named one of eight Manning Award Stars of the Week, Johnson is now in the running for the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week, which is&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://allstatesugarbowl.org/news/2024/9/30/stars.aspx">determined via an online fan vote</a>.

Johnson set career highs in passing across the board against the Cowboys, going 19-of-31 through the air for 259 yards and three touchdowns, while he added 60 rushing yards on five attempts with another two scores.

A native of Wichita, Kansas, Johnson became the first Wildcat to have at least three passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns against a conference opponent since Collin Klein at West Virginia in 2012. Additionally, it was just the ninth time in Big 12 history that a player hit those marks against a ranked opponent.

Through five starts during his first full season as the starting quarterback, Johnson has thrown for 879 yards and nine touchdowns on 77-of-126 aim, while he has rushed for 321 yards and two scores on 44 carries. He is one of only four quarterbacks in the country, one of two from a Power 4 team and the only Big 12 signal caller to throw for at least 800 yards and rush for 300 yards this season.

Following a bye, No. 20 Kansas State returns to action on Saturday, October 12, when the Wildcats travel to face Colorado.

C. “Tutz” Thomas, age 103, gracefully left this world on September 26, 2024, at
Redbud Village, Plainville, Kansas, leaving behind a legacy marked by strength,
kindness, and unwavering dedication to her family and community. She was born
on July 29, 1921, in Graham County, Kansas to Charles and Ola (Scruggs) Griffe.
On December 11, 1950, she married Robert O. Thomas in Broomfield, Colorado. He
preceded her in death in 1989.

A proud graduate of Hill City High School, Valeria life was a tapestry of rich
experiences. Shortly after school, she made the brave decision to move to
Denver. This was during the World War II era where she took a position at
Remington Steel, working tirelessly to produce ammunition. Her journey
continued as she relocated to Hanford, Washington, where she contributed to the
factory involved in the making of the Atomic Bomb. After her marriage to Robert
they moved to Plainville, where she devoted thirty years of her life to the
Plainville Rural Hospital, caring for many in her community with her nurturing
spirit.



Valeria was not just a devoted caregiver; she was also a vibrant participant in
various local organizations. Her spirit shone brightly as she led a Girl Scout
troop, became an active member of the Nicodemus American Legion Auxiliary, and
contributed to 4-H and the VFW Auxiliary. These roles allowed her to leave a
lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals who were fortunate enough
to know her.
&nbsp;


Beyond her professional accomplishments, Valeria was cherished for her baking;
her cookies were beloved by many, including the esteemed Bob Dole during his
visit to Nicodemus. Her remarkable cooking was a symbol of her generous heart
and the joyful memories she created around the dining table.



Valeria's proudest achievements included rising above the challenges of the
Great Depression and actively promoting her community. She selflessly donated
her home in Nicodemus to the historical society, ensuring that it would serve
as a meaningful part of the museum and office. Furthermore, she was honored by
the Nicodemus Historical Society as a centenarian, a testament to her vibrant
life and contributions.



She is survived by her loving daughters, Ola B. Pruitt (Rev. James) of Aurora,
Colorado and Kim Thomas of Stockton, Kansas. Her legacy continues through her
grandchildren, Shawn Harris of Austin, Texas, and Atiba "Kyle" Allah
of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, along with her great-grandchildren, El Asim,
Faheem, Mecca, Suleimon, Soledad, Elogio, Amado, Eliana, Lexi, Ihssan, and her
great-great-grandchildren, Leilah, and Kai.



Valeria was preceded in death by her stepfather, Henry Wilson who raised her
from the age of 4; a brother, Maurice Griffie, and her nephew, Paul Richard
Reece, whom she lovingly raised. As we celebrate the full and beautiful life of
Tutz, we remember a woman whose strength, compassion, and dedication have
forever touched our hearts and enriched our community.



Funeral services will be 11:00 AM on October 7, 2024, at the First Christian
Church 301 S. Broadway Street in Plainville. Burial will follow in the
Plainville Cemetery.

Lynn Scheck, age 67, of Russell, Kansas passed away on September 24, 2024 at
HaysMed. She was born on December 28, 1956, in Russell to Nathan and Dorothy
(Anderson) Karst. She met Everett “Butch” Hupfer and they made a life together
for over thirty years. Butch preceded her in death on Mays 13, 2023. 

Kay graduated from Gorham High School. Over the years, she became well-known as
a cook at the Elks Lodge and Waudby's in Russell. Beyond her professional life,
Kay had a myriad of hobbies that reflected her vibrant personality. She enjoyed
playing bingo, fishing, baking, painting, and engaging in various crafts. A
passionate reader, Kay also loved "junking" at area sales, often
turning her finds into treasures. Most treasured of all were the moments she
spent with her grandchildren, who brought immense joy and fulfillment to her
life.



Kay is survived by her son, Clint Hejny (Jevon) of Russell, KS; daughters,
Melanie Hoch (Jesse) of Gorham, KS, Jennifer Ayala of Russell, KS, and Keri
Hejny of Russell, KS; brother, Ed Karst (Nancy) of Aurora, CO; sister, Kathy
Hashenberger (Dave) of Russell, KS; as well as 14 grandchildren: Devin, Hannah,
Brody, Kaylee, Olivia, Clayton, Blake, Leslie, Selena, Kyelynn, Adam, Adison,
Kyona, and Braxton. She also leaves behind two great-grandchildren, Brilynn and
Boston.



Kay was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Everett
"Butch" Hupfer, her sister, Pat Bricker and husband Herman, and her
brother, Steve Karst.



A graveside service will be held on October 4, 2024, at Cross Plains Cemetery

This week, the Ellis County Commission will consider selling
the current Public Works facility east of Hays to Midwest Pipe Works for more
than $600,000.

At the September final commission meeting, the commission
reviewed the four sealed bids the county received for the sale of the Public
Works property at 280th Avenue east of Hays.

The highest bid was from Gary Geist and Midwest Pipe Works
for $605,000.

The commission elected to proceed with the sale of the building and conduct a public
hearing during the first meeting in October to discuss and potentially approve it.

According to County Administrator Darin Myers, they have had
several discussions with Geist about the potential closing date and the amount
of time he would allow for public works to get their equipment transferred to the
new facility north of Hays.

“He is very lenient and understanding,” Myers said. “He has
got a lot of stuff going on with the expansion of his current business, and he has
no really quick plans to do anything with this facility after Public Works
moves out.”

Myers said they want the closing date to be the first day of
January 2025. Geist told Myers he would be willing to have a closing day after
the new year.

The public works department does not have a date set for when they can begin moving into the new facility north of Hays.

The commission will conduct a
public hearing at Tuesday's meeting, but no one can submit a higher bid. 

The commission will then consider proceeding with the sale, and County Counselor Bill Jeter will begin working on the paperwork to complete it.

Tuesday’s meeting is at 8:30 a.m. at the County Administrative
Center, 718 Main St. Hays. 

In other business on Tuesday, the commission will hear an update from Fort Hays State University President Tisa Mason, a report from newly appointed Interim County Health Administrator Kerry McCue, discuss roads in the Stonewood Estate northeast of Hays, and hear the results of the Mid-Year Sales
Ratio Study from Appraiser Eugene Rupp.

The annual Oktoberfest Hays celebration, a beloved tradition that honors the region’s rich Volga German heritage, is set to return with a full lineup of exciting activities on Friday, October 4, and Saturday, October 5.

Event organizers have officially released the schedule, offering a packed weekend of entertainment, contests, and cultural festivities for all ages.

This year’s Oktoberfest will be held at Municipal Park on Friday and Saturday, drawing thousands of attendees from the local area and beyond.

The event features a blend of traditional Volga German-inspired activities, live music, food, and competitions, providing two days of community-focused fun.

Friday, October 4th: Traditional Celebrations and Contests

The Oktoberfest festivities will kick off on Friday, October 4th from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with an opening ceremony scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at Municipal Park.

The day will begin with the ceremonial Tapping of the Keg at 11:00 a.m., a highlight that draws onlookers eager to join in the first toast of the festival.

Attendees can test their strength and endurance with a variety of competitions, including the Stein Holding Contest at 2:00 p.m., followed by the Deutsch Hops Contest at 4:00 p.m., both open to participants aged 21 and over.

For food enthusiasts, the OktoberFEAST Contest will take place at 5:00 p.m., offering a chance to celebrate and savor the flavors of Oktoberfest.

Live entertainment will fill the park throughout the day, with performances from popular local bands, including the Ron Werth Band, Rice County Line, and Jimmy Dee and The Fabulous Destinations.

Visitors can also enjoy park-wide attractions such as the Beer Puppeteers, High Striker, and the traditional Mug Toss.

Friday’s festivities will wrap up at 7:00 p.m., closing out the first day of the celebration.

Saturday, October 5th: Family Fun and Homecoming Parade

Oktoberfest continues on Saturday, October 5th from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with a strong focus on family-friendly activities and entertainment.

The day will kick off with the FHSU Homecoming Parade at 11:00 a.m., followed by a special Oktoberfest welcome ceremony at 12:30 p.m.

Competitive spirits can join in on the Cornhole Tournament at 12:00 p.m., with the crowd-favorite World’s Largest Bierock Reveal at 1:30 p.m., sponsored by Lewis Toyota.

Other fun games and contests include the German Freeze Game at 2:00 p.m., the Pumpkin Pass at 3:00 p.m., and the Pumpkin Rolling Contest at 4:00 p.m. for children in the West Shelter House.

Live music and entertainment will continue to keep the energy high throughout the day, with performances by Galen Schmidtberger, Karl Meis, and Rice County Line. Kids will have plenty to do as well, with games and entertainment available from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., featuring the popular Jammin Randy show. Bounce houses will also be open for young festival-goers from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Flinn, 56, of Ellis, Kansas, passed away on September 25th, 2024, in his truck
in Summit, Illinois.&nbsp; He was born in
Oakley, Kansas, on January 9th, 1968, to Arnold and Belva Flinn.&nbsp; He was the youngest of three boys.

Wes was an over-the-road
truck driver for several years and spent five years running his own business, a
car detail shop in Hays, along with driving for some local trucking
companies.&nbsp; He was always in a hurry to
get home and see his wife and family.&nbsp;
When Wes wasn’t in the truck, he enjoyed collecting and working on
pickups and has always loved loud exhaust, his pet snakes, and his dogs and
cat.

Wes had two
children:&nbsp; his son Nathan Barnhardt and
daughter Bridget Schlereth.&nbsp; Wes started
dating Rhonda Tauber and was married in 2005.&nbsp;
Through this union, he gained three more children:&nbsp; Wesley, Tony, and Trista.

Wes was

Marion Gene Brooks, son of Frank Hobart Brooks and Minnie Leola Kesler
Brooks, was born on October 14, 1928, on the family’s Gove County farm in the
new house his father was building. He passed away on September 22, 2024, at the
age of 95.

He graduated from Sunshine Grade School in rural Gove County, where he would
walk three miles home from school with neighboring children when the weather
was warm. Afterward, he began learning about farming. Later, he met Joyce
Julianna Hammond while roller skating in WaKeeney. While dating, he learned
that her birthday was October 13, one day before his, so they agreed to be
married on October 15, 1950, at the Methodist Church in WaKeeney.

This union was blessed with four children: Gale Eugene, Charles (Chuck)
Leon, Mark Franklin, and Rita Joyce.

As a teenager, Marion gave his heart to the Lord and was baptized. As a
member of the Dunkard Brethren Church, he served as a deacon, Sunday School
superintendent, Sunday School teacher, and treasurer.

Marion enjoyed farming, painting, and constructing houses. He also worked
for Midwest Products, Flex King Industries, and Quinstar for 29 years, and
subsequently at the Swift Bullet Co. In his later years, he kept busy in his
home shop, making various wooden gifts for family and friends.

Marion enjoyed playing fast-pitch softball and volleyball. He and Joyce
traveled the world, visiting 35 countries. They especially appreciated river
cruises and trips to the Holy Land. During retirement, they became "Winter
Texans" in McAllen, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister, Eunice; sister,
Leona Reed; and brother, Merlin Brooks.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce, and their children: Gale (Sherry),
Chuck (Denise), Mark, and Rita (Mark Avila). His 13 grandchildren are Neysa
(Steve Hodes), Rochelle (Jared Comfort), Taylor Brooks (Bonnie), Tauni (Nate
Seyer), Melissa Whitaker, Melinda (Daniel Shinault), Bryon (Jessica Brooks),
Bradley Brooks, Kristal (Garrett Werth), Jessica (Eric Jacques), Morgan (Mike
Lawson), Andrew (Aaron Avila), and Matthew Avila.

His 32 great-grandchildren, who lovingly called him “GGPa,” are Stevie,
Peyton, Hudson, Kensington, Ocean, Indigo, Sapphire, Symphony, Midnight, Navy,
Owen, Delaney, Avery, Makenna, Hannah, Caleb, Jaydon, Clara, Lexie, Kennedy,
Sydney, Colt, Jordan, Bekah, Logan, Emery, Addilyn, Cooper, Colby, Evan, Cyrus,
and Isla. He is also survived by brothers-in-law Paul (Terry Hammond) and Bill
Reed, sister-in-law Janis Milwee, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Schmitt Funeral Home, located at 901 South Main
St., Quinter, KS, on Friday, October 4, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

A funeral service will take place at Church of the Brethren, located at 700
Grant St., Quinter, KS, on Saturday, October 5, 2024, beginning at 10:00 a.m.,

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A woman accused in a deadly shooting has made her first court appearance in the case.

Mercedes Muldrew, 35 of Wichita, is charged with 1st degree murder, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Just after 5:30p.m. September 22, police were dispatched to a shooting at an apartment complex in 3500 block of Inwood in Wichita, according to&nbsp; Ford.

Officers learned that a verbal altercation had taken place between 38-year-old Daryl Clark and a female suspect later identified as 35-year-old Mercedes Muldrew. The argument escalated when she reportedly began physically assaulting him, according to Wichita Police spokesperson Andrew Ford.

The situation further escalated when the Muldrew brandished a handgun and fired one shot, striking Clark in the chest.&nbsp; &nbsp;EMS transported him to an area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 6:22 p.m. Police arrested Muldrew. Her&nbsp;next court appearance is scheduled for October 8. She remains in jail on a $750,000 bond.

A year ago, the Royals matched a franchise record with 106 losses. Now, they are headed to the postseason for the first time since winning the 2015 World Series.

“We’re just so proud of everyone,” said shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., the face of the revitalized franchise. “This is just the beginning of something special.”

The celebration was delayed by a masterful performance from Atlanta pitcher Max Fried. But the Royals finally popped the champagne corks in the visitors' clubhouse at Truist Park when the Minnesota Twins were eliminated with a 7-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

“This isn’t how we ideally wanted it,” Witt said. “But we’re here. We did it. We’re so proud of each other. We can’t let one game control our season.”

Led by second-year manager Matt Quatraro, Kansas City is the first team in baseball history to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-kansas-city-major-league-baseball-playoffs-faf7e1aee9a4322eb969f93e503be055">make the playoffs after posting such a dismal mark</a>&nbsp;the previous season.

In fact, since the start of the expansion era in 1961, the Royals are just the third team to advance to the postseason after losing at least 100 games the previous year.

The Twins earned a wild card in 2017 after going 59-103 a year earlier, and the 2020 Florida Marlins qualified for a wild card during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign coming off a 57-105 debacle.

The Royals quickly fell on hard times after claiming back-to-back AL pennants in 2014 and ’15 and their first World Series title in 30 years. They had not recorded a winning season since their championship run, losing at least 100 games in three of the past six, and were a total laughingstock just a year ago.

That all changed this season with a team led by Witt, who became the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-bobby-witt-jr-steals-homers-2f244fb981427ad0622cbc0d73c200df">first shortstop in major league history</a>&nbsp;with multiple seasons of at least 30 homers and 30 steals.

“You can’t help but be proud,” general manager J.J. Picollo said. “It was a battle all year long. We overcame a lot of odds.”

The Royals have struggled down the stretch, enduring a pair of seven-game losing streaks.

“We had some adversity here the last month of the season,” Picollo said. “But this is a tough, resilient group and we got through and here we are celebrating this moment.”

Witt tops the majors with 210 hits and a .332 batting average, to go along with 32 homers, 109 RBIs and 31 stolen bases.

Veteran catcher Salvador Perez also is having a huge offensive season with 27 homers and 104 RBIs. The Royals made the playoffs even after losing first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino, who had 97 RBIs before breaking his right thumb and undergoing surgery.

There is a chance Pasquantino could return during the playoffs if the Royals make an extended run.

Amazingly, Picollo didn’t have to break the bank to build a small-market winner.

The players that have led Kansas City to heights not seen in nearly a decade were either on the team last year and just needed a little more time to grow, or were free-agent signings and trade acquisitions that underscored Picollo’s baseball savvy.

Seth Lugo, who is 16-9 with a 3.03 ERA, signed a modest three-year, $45 million free-agent deal. Michael Wacha signed a similar two-year, $32 million deal and is 13-8 with a 3.35 ERA.

Cole Ragans has contributed 11 wins with 223 strikeouts after being acquired from the Texas Rangers in a trade last season. Brady Singer bounced back from a disappointing 2023, and Michael Lorenzen is 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA in six starts since his arrival just before the trade deadline.

The bullpen has been entirely rebuilt, too, with Lucas Erceg earning 11 saves since the Royals landed him in a trade with Milwaukee.

Owner John Sherman said he was thrilled the fans of Kansas City have a winning team to cheer for again.

“I remember we talked about this a lot, maybe in spring training, that all we want to do is play meaningful baseball in August and September and have a chance to play in October,” Sherman said. “Here we are.”

Nobody seems to be having more fun than Witt, who has put together a historic season after signing an 11-year deal worth $288.7 million to serve as the cornerstone of the franchise.

The son of longtime big league pitcher Bobby Witt is the first player in major league history with multiple 30-30 seasons in his first three years in the majors. Advanced metrics grade him as not only one of baseball’s best defenders but also one of its fastest players.

“He’s the best player in baseball,” Ragans said recently. “A special talent, a special human being."

While fans in Kansas City have seen Witt’s stardom blossoming for several seasons, his coming-out party may have come this summer during the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/home-run-derby-261037bfe182674c9cd7352725d8b62a">Home Run Derby</a>&nbsp;at Globe Life Field in Arlington, not far from where he grew up in Colleyville, Texas.

Witt reached the finals before losing 14-13 to Teoscar Hernández of the Dodgers in a dramatic showdown that came down to the final swings.

Now, Witt can look forward to an even bigger stage.

Suzy Bogguss to perform in Oakley Oct. 6

SEDGWICK COUNTY — The suspect involved in a shooting near a school on Monday made his first court appearance in the case.

Vincent Solomon Jr., 46,&nbsp; Wichita, is charged with attempted 1st degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, and interference with law enforcement, according to the Sedgwick County District attorney's office

Just after 9a.m. Monday, Sedgwick County Emergency Communications began to receive reports of a shooting outside Cessna Elementary School, 2101 West 45th Street South in Wichita, according to a statement from Police Chief Joe Sullivan during a Tuesday afternoon news conference.

The call was broadcast on all law enforcement radio channels. A Sedgwick County Deputy heard the call and responded. When the deputy arrived, he located Solomon who was armed with a handgun. The man made statements that the deputy would kill him while pointing the gun at the deputy, according to Sullivan.

The suspect than ran to and laid on top of a 30-year-old woman. The deputy gave commands for the man to drop his gun and observed the suspect place the gun to the woman's head.

In defense of the woman, the deputy fired his gun twice. The suspect would not let go of the woman. The deputy then attempted to disarm the man physically. It took two Wichita Police officers and the deputy to disarm Solomon.

Investigators have learned that Solomon and woman live together and have children together. The couple had an argument in a vehicle on the way to the school which led to the suspect shooting the woman multiple times. The woman ran toward the school and the Solomon chased her. A Wichita Public School staff member saw the suspect with the gun approaching the school and pulled the door of the school shut and locked it so the suspect could not get inside.

EMS transported Solomon and the woman to an area hospital for treatment.

The Advanced Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) was activated to conduct this investigation. Solomon remains jailed on a $750,000 bond. He is due back in court October 7.

Kan. man who shot woman near a school released on bond

NEW YORK (AP) — Ukrainian President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/volodymyr-zelenskyy">Volodymyr Zelenskyy</a>&nbsp;met face-to-face with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;on Friday with public tensions rising between the two over&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/russia-ukraine">Ukraine's defense against Russia's invasion</a>&nbsp;and in the midst of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/election-2024">U.S. presidential election</a>.

“We both want to see this end, and we both want to see a fair deal made,” Trump told Fox News, referring to the Russia-Ukraine fighting while standing alongside Zelenskyy after meeting for 40 minutes. “The president wants it to end, and he wants it to end as quickly as possible. He wants a fair transaction to take place.”

Zelenskyy said the war shouldn't have started and added that there needs to be pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and peace for the families of those killed.

“We need to do everything to pressure him to stop this war. He is in our territory. That's most important to understand. He is in our territory.”

The meeting came at a critical time in the Russia-Ukraine war as Election Day nears in the U.S. Trump and Vice President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/kamala-harris">Kamala Harris</a>, his Democratic opponent, have taken sharply different approaches to Ukraine. Zelenskyy has been eager to keep good relations with the United States, his country's largest provider of arms and money for the war. But the future of that support would be in doubt if Trump were to win the election.

Trump, who has touted his good relationship with Putin and called the Russian leader “pretty smart” for invading Ukraine, has for months criticized U.S. support for Ukraine and derided Zelenskyy as a “salesman” for persuading Washington to provide weapons and funding to his military as it tries to fend off Moscow. On Friday, Trump brought up his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-ap-top-news-elections-international-news-politics-0756fda2b5143891c5da1c6897001cee">first impeachment</a>, which Democrats in Congress pursued after he asked Zelenskyy for a “favor” — that he investigate Joe Biden, now the president, and Biden’s son Hunter, who served on the board of a Ukrainian gas company.

At the time Trump asked for the “favor,” he was withholding $400 million in military aid to Ukraine as it fought Russian-backed separatists on its eastern boundary. He was later acquitted of the impeachment charges by a Republican-led Senate.

“He could have grandstanded and played cute,” Trump said. “And he didn't do that. He said, ‘President Trump did absolutely nothing wrong.’ He said it loud and clear.”

Zelenskyy&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/ukraine-president-says-there-was-no-blackmail-in-call-with-trump">told reporters</a>&nbsp;in October 2019, as Congress was launching its impeachment inquiry, that there was “no blackmail” from Trump. He also told reporters, “I don’t want to interfere in any way in the elections,” trying to publicly and privately distance himself then from U.S. domestic politics.

But&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-ap-top-news-international-news-joe-biden-politics-139dd535eac749aa961bc0205d10e872">The Associated Press reported afterward</a>&nbsp;that, despite Zelenskyy’s denials, U.S. officials were aware he was feeling pressure from the Trump administration to investigate Biden even before his phone call with Trump regarding the “favor.”

Friday's meeting almost wasn't scheduled despite Zelenskyy’s office saying something had been planned during the Ukrainian leader’s visit to the U.N. General Assembly, during which he is making his endgame pitch to allies.

In an interview with The New Yorker that was published earlier this week, Zelenskyy implied Trump does not understand and oversimplifies the conflict. The Ukrainian leader said Trump's running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, was “too radical” and has essentially advocated for Ukraine to “make a sacrifice” by “giving up its territories.”

Trump ripped Zelenskyy and Ukraine on two separate occasions this week. Speaking Wednesday in North Carolina, he&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-ukraine-putin-zelenskyy-0f4d539aa73a943474d779716e5fe42a">referred</a>&nbsp;to Ukraine as “demolished” and its people as “dead.”

“Any deal — the worst deal — would’ve been better than what we have now,” Trump said. “If they made a bad deal, it would’ve been much better. They would’ve given up a little bit and everybody would be living and every building would be built and every tower would be aging for another 2,000 years.”

Meanwhile,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/zelenskyy-joe-biden-kamala-harris-trump-229804fd42332c584dfbe05224634e44">Harris on Thursday stood alongside Zelenskyy</a>&nbsp;and said Trump's push for Ukraine to quickly cut a deal to end the war was “not proposals for peace,” but “proposals for surrender.” Trump on Thursday said he was not advocating for a surrender.

Earl Allen Schmidt, 95, passed away on
August 16, 2024, surrounded by family at River Bend Assisted Living, Great
Bend, Kansas. He was born on August 20, 1928, in rural Barton County to Henry
and Anna (Unruh) Schmidt. In March 1948, he married Charlotte “Janice” Flick in
Pawnee Rock, Kansas.

A lifetime area resident, Earl worked
as a farmer and drove a school bus for Pawnee Rock Schools for 35 years. He was
a member of the First United Methodist Church, as well as the Pawnee Rock Lions
Club. He enjoyed collecting and restoring tractors, and square dancing in his
younger years.

Survivors include his wife of 76
years, Janice; two sons, Michael Schmidt and wife Janet of Cornelius, Oregon,
and Dennis Schmidt and wife Terrie of Cape Coral, Florida; daughter, Brenda
Girard of Hays; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and numerous
nieces and nephews. 

He is preceded in death by his parents
and eight siblings.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial
service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 12, 2024, at First United
Methodist Church, 2123 Forest Ave., Great Bend, with Pastor Diana Webster
presiding. Memorials have been designated to First United Methodist Church or
Great Bend Lions Club, in care of Bryant Funeral Home, 1425 Patton Rd., Great
Bend, KS 67530.

Reverend Fred Kirkpatrick, Jr., age
93, passed away September 11, 2024, at his home in Salina, Kansas. After 77
years of pastoring, he has gone to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. 

A devoted Pastor, Husband, Father,
Grandfather and Great-Grandfather, Fred dedicated his life to serving Jesus in
everything he did. 

He was born on <a href="calendar:T2:October%2021,%201930">October 21, 1930</a>, in Dodge
City, Kansas, to Fred Kirkpatrick, Sr. and Eva Lodema (Badgley) Kirkpatrick.
The grandson of one of the early Dodge City founders, J.M. Kirkpatrick, Fred
often shared stories of old Dodge City and its more raucous days which his
grandfather had witnessed.

Before television was invented, his
family gathered around the big old radio in the living room to listen to the
gospel being preached and he found salvation in Jesus Christ. As a young boy,
Fred saw the patrons frequenting the many bars and saloons along Front Street
and witnessed to them about Jesus and His redemptive power.

They lived in Fort Wayne until he completed Bible college. Following graduation and ordination,
the Kirkpatricks moved to Great Bend, Kansas, where they started their first
church on Main Street in 1952. As that church grew, he moved the little white
chapel building to East 19th street and held services. And finally, he and the
congregation purchased the old County Farm west of Great Bend, where it became
known as Faith Community Church and Bible College. An engineer by trade, he worked for
many decades at E.B.H. Engineers in Great Bend, designing and constructing
countless community infrastructure projects. He loved that work and took the
message of the Gospels with him daily. Through his testimony, many people came
to know the saving Grace of Jesus Christ. His passion for Christ drove every
aspect of his life. Fred’s vision for a great revival meant not only holding
thrice weekly services at Faith Community Church, but also holding nightly
services in small communities and homes across Kansas – Mondays in Bunker Hill,
Tuesdays in Pratt, Thursdays in Hays and Ellis, Fridays at Full Gospel
Businessmen’s meetings across the entire state and Sunday afternoons at the
County Jail. He brought the Billy Graham Film
Crusades, Teen Challenge meetings and Women’s Aglow to the area. He was also a
State Director for Women’s Aglow for many years. Through his leadership and
stewardship in these endeavors, many gave their lives to Christ and followed
him into the ministry where they serve still <a href="calendar:T5:today">today</a>.After losing his wife Sally to cancer,
Fred married Glenda (Mountford) Jahnke on <a href="calendar:T2:September%2022,%201989">September 22, 1989</a>. This
year marks their 35 years working together for Christ. They brought comfort to
many through a ministry of teaching, singing and praising the Lord across
Kansas and beyond.Preaching over 15,000 sermons, Fred’s
central message never wavered: The grace of God brings salvation. He always
taught that God in His great love sent His only Son into the world to be
sacrificed for all of mankind’s sins. And in that simple message, many found
the “peace that passes all understanding.” Hearts were changed, families
healed, broken bodies mended, and encouragement filled the hearts of those
wherever he went. He was preceded in death by his first
wife Sally, his parents, Fred and Eva Kirkpatrick, plus siblings Kay and Kenton
Kirkpatrick.He is survived by his wife Glenda of
the home; his loving children, Kristi (Bruce) Kraisinger, Kevin (Paula Stout) Kirkpatrick,
and Linda (Doug) Basye, Dr. Lavelle (Doug Stickland) Ellis, and Rev. Broc
(Alicia) Jahnke. He had 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren at the time
of his passing. &nbsp;As an honor to his life’s work, he
requested no funeral service so that Jesus may be glorified rather than the
works of one man. There will be a praise and worship service at Faith Community
Church, 293 W. Barton County Road, Great Bend, Kansas at on October 5, 2024, at
2:00 p.m.Pastor Kirkpatrick planned this
service in advance of his death, and he wanted to have a joyous celebration of
his homecoming to heaven. The family has requested in lieu of flowers,
donations be made to Faith Community Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home,
1425 Patton Rd., Great Bend, KS 67530.The family wants to extend to all
friends, a generous and prayerful “thank you” for your faithfulness to God’s
