After a lengthy discussion about discipline at the high school and policy revisions, the Hays USD school board approved the Hays High School handbook on July 21.

Board member Jayme Goetz requested revisions to the handbook when it was presented to the board in June. Her primary concern was the policy on discipline.

Shawn Henderson, Hays High principal, said at a board meeting in June the handbook had been edited for clarity and to provide administrators more flexibility in addressing individual students and circumstances.

However, Goetz argued the handbook needed to contain specific consequences for violations to maintain consistency. The handbook was revised again and brought back to the board on July 21.

Goetz&nbsp;said she had at least six complaints leading up to the meeting regarding the handbook and a lack of consistency in discipline at the high school.

Goetz taught one year at Hays High under Henderson before taking a job teaching at Fort Hays State University.

"All discipline is teamwork," Henderson told the board, "and we have to work together and we have to understand where and how the experience is implemented for our families, stakeholders and students."

He added, "We want to be as clear as we possibly can be. Behavior is communication."

Goetz said the changes brought to the July meeting put the administrators all on the same page.

"This is going to come up again next year, and I would encourage you this year to lead from the middle and create a little committee of teachers ... so you can come up with a handbook that works for everyone," she said.

"You probably know this, but before a teachers sends a student to the office, they have already tried to create a relationship with them, cut them some slack talked about what's going on in their day, given them a break, sent them on a walk to cool down, done all of these things," she said.

"So when a teacher is sending a student to you, all of those boxes should already be checked, and your job ... your part of this is to take it to the next level,"&nbsp;Goetz said.

"I don't see administrators as someone who is supposed to create a friendship with a student," Goetz said. "It's more of a professional relationship. It is more, 'This is what you did, and this is the consequence.'"

Board member Ruth Ruder, whose daughter is a Hays High student, said, "Every scenario is going to be different."

Ruder said administrators can't anticipate all of the different scenarios that they will have to deal with.

"I appreciate your staff looking into it," she said. "I didn't have an issue with it the first time."

Ruder urged teachers who had issues to come to Henderson or board members. However, she said teachers are not reaching out to her with issues.

"Until I do, I'm on the administration's side," she said.

Henderson said, "We want the communication, and we want the collaboration. I would echo that across all of our buildings. We feel that there is a lot of detail here in this handbook, and we are always open for conversation. I can't speak to every scenario."

Henderson said the high school has already been working under the same discipline framework described in the handbook for five years.

Board Vice President Ken Brooks said he thought Henderson had gone above and beyond in revising the handbook.

Allen Park asked about procedures for bathrooms at the high school.

Although some bathrooms share a common sink area, half of those restrooms will be labeled for girls and half will be labeled for boys.

The handbook states that only one person can be in a stall at a time. The bathrooms will continue to be monitored during passing periods by teachers. Cameras will also monitor the sink areas.

Goetz continued to ask questions about the discipline section of the handbook.

Ruder asked, "What does that have to do with the board?"

"It's their policy," Ruder said, referring to Henderson and the other high school administration.

Ruder argued the board hires the superintendent, and it is up to the superintendent to manage his staff and the principals to manage their schools, not the board.

"I do not want to be involved in every disciplinary action that any kid has at Hays High School," Ruder said. "I don't have that kind of time, and I bet you don't either. That is [Henderson's] job to handle discipline, not ours."

Goetz said to Ruder, "You have a really good kid."

Henderson said he is unable to share what happens during discipline procedures with specific students because he is barred from doing so by privacy laws.

Henderson said a student might say they had no repercussions, but they did, and Henderson can't release anything to the contrary.

He compared these laws to HIPAA, which prevents doctors from releasing medical information.

"When we start with someone's bad day, we start with privacy, dignity and respect," Henderson said.

"To Dr. Yarmer, I'm one more patient, but [a student is] someone's kid, friend, dad, and I don't approach education any differently, and I can't," Henderson said.

"I'm passionate about this because the things that happen in the office are super private, but I promise you, board of education and anyone listening, we function as a team," Henderson said.

"From my point of view as a principal, I can't always share all of the things that are going on," he said.

Henderson said he would appreciate it if issues were directed through the chain of command. He added that the most common complaint the administration receives is from parents who don't want their students held accountable.

Henderson said he, as a non-elected school staff member, is being put in a difficult place if he is going to be called out in a public meeting every time someone calls a board member.

"There will always be comments about the person who holds people accountable for a living. I know that. I know that is going to come," he said.&nbsp;

"If anyone who stands here is going to be talked about in this way, I don't know if this is the right way," Henderson said.

The school board approved the elementary, middle and virtual school handbooks without discussion during the June meeting.

The high school handbook was approved at the July 21 meeting on a vote of 6-1, with Allen Park voting against.

Hays USD 489 board squabbles over discipline policy in high school handbook

Hays Medical Center (HaysMed) has received two American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines® achievement awards for demonstrating commitment to following up-to-date, research-based guidelines for the treatment of stroke, ultimately leading to more lives saved, shorter recovery times and fewer readmissions to the hospital.

Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death in the United States, respectively, according to the American Heart Association <a href="//www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIR.0000000000001303">2025 Statistical Update</a>. Studies show patients can recover better when providers consistently follow treatment guidelines.

Get With The Guidelines puts the expertise of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to work for hospitals nationwide, helping ensure patient care is aligned with the latest evidence- and research-based guidelines. As a participant in the Get With The Guidelines programs, HaysMed qualified for the awards by demonstrating how their organization has committed to improving quality care.

August marks National Breastfeeding Month, a time to recognize and support one of the most natural and essential forms of infant nutrition. 

Championed by the U.S. Breastfeeding Committee and support by healthcare advocates nationwide, this month highlights the importance of breastfeeding for both babies and mothers—while calling for stronger community, workplace and policy support for families.

Breastfeeding is more than just a feeding choice. It’s a powerful tool for lifelong health and development. 

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, breastfeeding offers optimal nutrition, boosts babies’ immune system, reduces risks of chronic illnesses and fosters attachment between mother and child. Mothers also benefit with reduced risks of breast and ovarian cancers, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes and postpartum depression. 

According to an epidemiological study published in the The Lancet, breastfeeding is dose specific, which means the longer a woman breastfeeds, the lower her risk for developing breast cancer. For every 12 months of breastfeeding, the risk of breast cancer goes down by 4.3%. This can be for one child or a combination of children.

Yet despite the well-documented benefits, many families face significant barriers to breastfeeding—from lack of parental leave and workplace accommodations to misinformation and social stigma.

The 2025 theme is “Forward Together” which emphasizes the importance of connecting families with evidence-based information, peer support and community networks. It’s a call to action for healthcare providers, employers, policy makers and communities to create environments where breastfeeding is normalized, encouraged, and supported.

· Support local breastfeeding-friendly policies and businesses

· Advocate for paid family leave and lactation accommodations in workplaces

· Share resources with new parents such as La Leche League, Breastfeeding Coalitions, and Lactation Consultants

Heat index values up to 106 are expected, according to the National Weather Service in Dodge City.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Briney Motorsports finalists named for Lite Beer from Miller UTV Giveaway

EMPORIA, Kan. – Fort Hays State Football was tabbed third in both the MIAA Preseason Coaches and Media Polls, released on Monday (July 28) at MIAA Football Media Day. The Tigers are picked where they finished last year in the standings, coming off an 8-3 overall, 6-3 MIAA performance in 2024.

Fort Hays State tied for third in the MIAA regular season standings with Central Missouri, both at 6-3. The Tigers were right on the cut line of getting into the NCAA Playoffs, ranked eighth in the final super region rankings release as the top seven teams were selected to the playoffs. The Tigers defeated Central Missouri head-to-head in Hays last year and got the nod for the higher spot in the preseason polls with Central Missouri listed fourth in both.

Central Oklahoma and Pittsburg State led the way in both polls, coming off NCAA playoff appearances in 2024. UCO was picked first in the coaches poll, while PSU slightly edged UCO for first in the media poll despite UCO having more first-place votes. Central Oklahoma was the MIAA champion in 2024 with an 8-1 conference mark and went on to finish the year 12-2 overall by advancing to the Round of 16 in the NCAA playoffs. Pittsburg State finished 2024 8-3 overall after going 7-2 in MIAA action. The Gorillas lost their opening game of the NCAA playoffs.

Fort Hays State returns seven of its regular starters from the 2024 season on offense, but just four on defense. FHSU had the third-best scoring offense and fourth-best total offense in the MIAA last year, but backed it with the best scoring defense and second-best total defense in the conference. The Tigers return six All-MIAA selections from last year's squad in 2025. The group includes Josh Shaw (OL), Porter Dannevik (OL), Cale Cormaney (TE), and Caleb Heavner (QB) on offense, and John Johnson (LB) and Gaven Haselhorst (DL) on defense.

For the second-straight year, Fort Hays State will open with Angelo State at home on Thursday, August 28. The Tigers will have five home games throughout the 2025 regular season, which includes two in September, one in October, and one in November. The Tigers start with two non-conference games (one home, one away) before jumping into MIAA play for its final nine games of the regular season.

Hays Post Sports HAYS – Lonnie Melvin fired a four-under 67 at Smoky Hill Country
Club to claim the 2025 Hays Merchant Golf tournament championship by two shots
over second-place Nick Vonlintel.

The annual tournament was played July 26th at the
Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course and July 27th at Smoky Hill Country Club.

Alex Hobelmann’s three-under 69 at the Fort Hays Municipal Course
paced the field after day one. 

Vonlintel and Seth Oakley were both one shot back with a
round of 70. Melvin was four shots off the lead with a 73.

On the second day, Melvin was able to erase the deficit and
secure the two shot victory over Vonlintel, 140 to 142.

Jacob George finished third with rounds of 73 and 74 for a
combined scored of 147.

Hobelmann followed his 69 with a 79 and his two-day total
was 148.

Brendon Goss rounded out the top five with rounds of 74 and
76 for a total of 150.

⛳Melvin claims Hays Merchants golf tournament victory

No Hays City Commission work session this week

The Wellbrock family faced the inconceivable.

While his parents thought 3-year-old Matthew was quietly eating his lunch, the boy had snuck out of the house into the garage and been crushed between the garage door and a heavy truck tailgate.

Matthew was rushed to the hospital and had to be lifeflighted to a trauma center.

A friend brought the family a bag with simple items, which proved essential as they held vigil by little Matthew's bedside.

Tragically, Matthew did not survive his injuries.

However, as a memorial to their son, the Wellbrocks, in cooperation with Women Who Lead, created the Matthew's Gift program, which provides a bag of essential hygiene and comfort supplies to families whose loved ones have been transferred to other hospitals&nbsp;from HaysMed in an emergency.

Since the program began in 2019, hundreds of local families have received the bags and the aid they bring.

However, demand for the bags has been increasing, and Women Who Lead is searching to add to its list of sponsors or individual donors to continue the program.

Each bag and its contents cost $124.75. HaysMed distributed 137 bags in 2024. The hospital projects it will need 144 bags in 2025. Werth Wealth Management provides water, D &amp; L Body Shop provides playing cards, Golden Plains Credit Union provides a notepad and HaysMed provides some of the hygine items and phone chargers.&nbsp;

Nancy Jeter, a Women Who Lead board member, said the organization estimates the program will cost $14,000 per year moving forward.

Jeanna Wellbrock, Matthew's mother, said, "People don't realize when you just take off and leave what you don't have."

Jeanna had quickly packed a bag, but she wouldn't leave Matthew's side even to walk to the car or go to the cafeteria. An acquaintance from Wichita, an EMT, brought the family a bag of essentials—the bag that would ultimately be the model for Matthew's Gift.

"That bag showed up, and I remember pulling the toothbrush out and brushing my teeth for the first time in three days," she said. 

"I remember thinking, 'Well, that feels good.' I know that may seem so incredibly trivial, but it was just that little thing that made you feel a little more normal in a really unnormal situation."

The Wellbrocks have five other children besides Matthew. The children were in seventh grade, fourth grade, kindergarten plus 9-month-old twin girls, and the kids were at the hospital with their parents.

"There was this whole chaos going on, and there were people who were helping with the chaos, but there was something in that bag for everybody," she said. ...

"There was a deck of cards in there, and the kids sat in the waiting room and played slapjack," she said.

Her friend had packed the bag with Chex mix, which the kids ate. They loved going through the bag, and it was something to distract them.

"There was something for each of the kids so they didn't feel like they were lost in the chaos," she added.

Jeanna said working to launch Matthew's gift was a source of healing for her husband.

The Wellbrocks had twin daughters who were only 9 months old when Matthew died. They have no memory of Matthew. They know of him through what others have shared with them and the Matthew's Gift program.

"It's their connection to Matthew, whom they didn't know," she said. "It's helped all of us in a different way by keeping his memory alive, but also giving us a connection to something."

His mother said Matthew was the kind of kid who, even at 3, wanted to jump in and help, so she said it is very fitting that a program such as this bears his name.

"It doesn't matter if you are an older person or a younger person, everybody gets a bag who gets sent out," Jeanna said.

Women Who Lead regularly receive thank-you cards from people who have received the bags,&nbsp;but so do the Wellbrocks.

A father recently shared his experience with the program with Women Who Lead.

“When my newborn daughter was flown to Denver with an unknown heart defect, someone handed me Matthew’s Gift bag as I boarded the midnight flight out of Hays Regional with nothing but a change of clothes," he said.

"The snacks, water, toothbrush, and phone charger—basic travel stuff—became lifelines at 3 a.m. when I wouldn't leave her side, especially when I realized that bottle of water came from my local bank. Thank you to the sponsors of Matthew's Gift and to Women Who Lead for your continued support for families like mine in need."

Jeanna was most touched by a phone call she received from a friend. Her son was being flown out of Hays because he had an RSV infection.

"She called me from the parking lot as she was walking out to her car, " Jeanna said. "She was crying. She said, 'I wasn't expecting this, but I know everything is going to be OK. They handed me this, and for whatever reason, I know everything is going to be OK, now.'"

A mother who had a loved one flown out of Hays reached out to thank the Wellbrocks. She said she had to leave Hays right at supper time, and she had her small kids with her.

"They needed to eat, but I was not stopping," the woman told Jeanna.

"That saved having to run through a drive-through. Being able to hand that back to the other kids was huge," the woman told Jeanna.

Until you have gone through something like that, you don't realize how hard it is to pack and know exactly what you need,"&nbsp;Jeanna said.

"Having that thought process taken care of for you when your brain is all over the place is a huge relief. You're trying to process something so absolutely catastrophic."

Not everyone who has a loved one flown out of Hays is facing a life-or-death situation.

"For the people who are facing a life-or-death situation, they're in a place you can't even imagine being, because your brain won't let you go there until you have to," Jeanna said.

"They are being supported in a way you can't explain to someone who hasn't done it. ... Knowing there is that little bit of comfort. I don't know if that's the right word, because there's nothing comforting about your kid being put on a helicopter and flown out, but knowing there is the support."

 </figure><div><iframe title="Post Podcast: Women Who Lead" allowtransparency="true" height="300" width="100%" style="border: none; min-width: min(100%, 430px);height:300px;" scrolling="no" data-name="pb-iframe-player" src="https://www.podbean.com/player-v2/?from=embed&i=iy3d5-191123e-pb&square=1&share=1&download=1&fonts=Arial&skin=3267a3&font-color=auto&rtl=0&logo_link=podcast_page&btn-skin=60a0c8&size=300" loading="lazy" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div>By CRISTINA JANNEY Hays PostThe Wellbrock family faced the inconceivable.While his parents thought 3-year-old Matthew was quietly eating his lunch, the boy had snuck out of the house into the garage and been crushed between the garage door and a heavy truck tailgate.Matthew was rushed to the hospital and had to be lifeflighted to a trauma center.A friend brought the family a bag with simple items, which proved essential as they held vigil by little Matthew's bedside.Tragically, Matthew did not survive his injuries.However, as a memorial to their son, the Wellbrocks, in cooperation with Women Who Lead, created the Matthew's Gift program, which provides a bag of essential hygiene and comfort supplies to families whose loved ones have been transferred to other hospitals&nbsp;from HaysMed in an emergency.Since the program began in 2019, hundreds of local families have received the bags and the aid they bring.However, demand for the bags has been increasing, and Women Who Lead is searching to add to its list of sponsors or individual donors to continue the program.Each bag and its contents cost $124.75. HaysMed distributed 137 bags in 2024. The hospital projects it will need 144 bags in 2025. Werth Wealth Management provides water, D &amp; L Body Shop provides playing cards, Golden Plains Credit Union provides a notepad and HaysMed provides some of the hygine items and phone chargers.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>Nancy Jeter, a Women Who Lead board member, said the organization estimates the program will cost $14,000 per year moving forward.Jeanna Wellbrock, Matthew's mother, said, "People don't realize when you just take off and leave what you don't have."Jeanna had quickly packed a bag, but she wouldn't leave Matthew's side even to walk to the car or go to the cafeteria. An acquaintance from Wichita, an EMT, brought the family a bag of essentials—the bag that would ultimately be the model for Matthew's Gift."That bag showed up, and I remember pulling the toothbrush out and brushing my teeth for the first time in three days," she said. "I remember thinking, 'Well, that feels good.' I know that may seem so incredibly trivial, but it was just that little thing that made you feel a little more normal in a really unnormal situation."The Wellbrocks have five other children besides Matthew. The children were in seventh grade, fourth grade, kindergarten plus 9-month-old twin girls, and the kids were at the hospital with their parents."There was this whole chaos going on, and there were people who were helping with the chaos, but there was something in that bag for everybody," she said. ..."There was a deck of cards in there, and the kids sat in the waiting room and played slapjack," she said.Her friend had packed the bag with Chex mix, which the kids ate. They loved going through the bag, and it was something to distract them."There was something for each of the kids so they didn't feel like they were lost in the chaos," she added. Jeanna said working to launch Matthew's gift was a source of healing for her husband.The Wellbrocks had twin daughters who were only 9 months old when Matthew died. They have no memory of Matthew. They know of him through what others have shared with them and the Matthew's Gift program."It's their connection to Matthew, whom they didn't know," she said. "It's helped all of us in a different way by keeping his memory alive, but also giving us a connection to something."His mother said Matthew was the kind of kid who, even at 3, wanted to jump in and help, so she said it is very fitting that a program such as this bears his name."It doesn't matter if you are an older person or a younger person, everybody gets a bag who gets sent out," Jeanna said.Women Who Lead regularly receive thank-you cards from people who have received the bags,&nbsp;but so do the Wellbrocks.A father recently shared his experience with the program with Women Who Lead.“When my newborn daughter was flown to Denver with an unknown heart defect, someone handed me Matthew’s Gift bag as I boarded the midnight flight out of Hays Regional with nothing but a change of clothes," he said."The snacks, water, toothbrush, and phone charger—basic travel stuff—became lifelines at 3 a.m. when I wouldn't leave her side, especially when I realized that bottle of water came from my local bank. Her son was being flown out of Hays because he had an RSV infection."She called me from the parking lot as she was walking out to her car, " Jeanna said. "She was crying. She said, 'I wasn't expecting this, but I know everything is going to be OK. They handed me this, and for whatever reason, I know everything is going to be OK, now.'"A mother who had a loved one flown out of Hays reached out to thank the Wellbrocks.
