Mary Louise Lange, 80, passed away June 11, 2020 at Hospice House, Hutchinson.

She was born June 22, 1939 in Larned to Earl and Louise King Hall.

A lifetime area resident she was a homemaker and a Licensed Mental 
Health Technician for Larned State Hospital. She was of the Christian 
faith and enjoyed crocheting, ceramics, painting, reading, and fishing. 
She was a member of the DAR and was the Garfield Librarian.

On October 3, 1959 she married Charles C. Lange Jr. at Larned; he preceded her in death.

Survivors include: daughter, Karla (Mark) Buck, Hutchinson; son, 
Charles (Sabrina) Lange, Garfield; sister, Jolene Bryant, Dodge City; 
brother, Maurice (Judy) Hall, Larned; fourteen grandchildren, and 
numerous great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; daughter,
 Mary Charlene Hainer; two sisters, Patricia “Pat” Haremza, Sharon 
Baxter; and a brother, Ronald Hall.

Graveside service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 15, 2020 at 
Garfield Cemetery, Garfield, with Pastor Ryan Webster presiding. 
Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2020 at 
Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial in Garfield Cemetery.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Donors are pushing Kansas’ higher education board to fire Wichita State University’s president after he canceled a virtual speech by Ivanka Trump for its technical school’s graduation.

The Kansas Board of Regents had a special Zoom meeting Wednesday, only two days after a former board member from Wichita said the regents should ask for President Jay Golden’s resignation. Golden was present for at least part of the four-hour closed meeting.

Afterward, the board issued <a href="https://www.kansasregents.org/about/news-releases/2020-news-releases/757-kansas-board-of-regents-statement">a short statement</a> that didn’t mention him or Wichita State, expressing its commitment to “support and promote freedom of speech and diversity and inclusion.”

<a href="https://apnews.com/466ba7b32565ecde87ff4eb40dd4f71e">Golden canceled</a>&nbsp;Trump’s speech after students and faculty protested. Students staged an impromptu rally Wednesday for Golden, and nearly 7,200 people had signed a petition supporting him by Wednesday night.

Kansas Senate President Susan Wagle, a Wichita Republican and Wichita State graduate, said she was “deeply disappointed,” adding that when she was a student in the 1970s, “free speech was a fundamental right on campus.”

“I fear that may no longer be the case,” she said.

A Koch Industries spokeswoman said Wednesday that financial commitments to the university are being honored and, while it opposes canceling speakers, it doesn’t tie funding to university employment actions.

Clark is the chairman and CEO of a Wichita investment firm who served as chairman of search committees for both Golden and his predecessor, John Bardo. Golden became president in January, after Bardo died in March 2019.

Clark told the regents that officials from Koch Industries and several longtime donors and supporters are “very upset and quite vocal in their decisions to disavow any further support.” He said canceling Trump’s speech damaged the school’s reputation with high-profile donors and relationships can be restored only if Golden leaves.

Steve Feilmeier, Koch Industries’ executive vice president and chief financial officer, said in an email that he’s been asked to serve on the Wichita State Foundation board and how the speech controversy is resolved will “weigh heavily” on his decision.

The university has said Koch Industries and its associated foundations have spent or pledged to spend more than $15 million there in the past seven years. The university’s basketball arena is named for Charles Koch.

Company spokeswoman Jessica Koehn said it respects “the university’s independence” in making employment decisions.

But she also said Koch Industries believes canceling speakers “cuts off the chance to engage, debate, and criticize.”

Wichita State has 14,000 students, including some 3,000 at its technical school and is home to a national institute on aviation research. Parts of Wichita and its suburbs are politically conservative, and Donald Trump carried the county in 2016 by 18 percentage points. Ivanka Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/e0fc0c39320f47bb97c009827f9f5bfc">visited WSU Tech last fall</a>&nbsp;to promote its training programs.

Golden later said the university is committed to diversity and that he canceled the speech to avoid a distraction from celebrating the students.

WICHITA —WSU Tech has made a change in who will speak at their weekend virtual graduation event.

On Thursday morning, the school announced that Ivanka Trump, advisor to the president of the United States, as a planned speaker at the college’s virtual commencement ceremony scheduled for Saturday.

The invitation was extended in February and Ms. Trump offered to record a congratulatory message to graduates to be played during the event, according to a statement released late Thursday from Dr. Sheree Utash, President, WSU Tech.

"In light of the social justice issues brought forth by George Floyd’s death, I understand and take responsibility that the timing of the announcement was insensitive. For this, I’m sorry that was never the intent, and I want you to know I have heard you and we are responding," according to Utash.

"Our focus with commencement has always been about our graduates and celebrating their accomplishments. To ensure this our only commencement speaker will be Rebecca Zinabu, WSU Tech practical nursing graduate," according to a joint statement from Utash and Wichita State University president Jay Golden.

"The graduates will also be invited to separately view congratulatory messages from over 30 voices, including Ms. Trump and community members."

Utash wrote, "I respect and understand the sharply divided reaction to today’s announcement. The college stands with those who fight injustice and advocate for social equity, and we’re profoundly proud of the diversity and social change being brought forth by our students, alumni, faculty, and staff.

In my heart, my highest priority has always been to support our students and our community, and we will do so on Saturday."

(AP) — Donors are calling for Wichita State University’s president to be fired after he canceled a virtual speech by Ivanka Trump for its technical school’s graduation.A former member of the Kansas higher education system’s Board of Regents told the board that the decision by university President Jay Golden threatens a multimillion-dollar relationship with Koch Industries, the vast conglomerate led by billionaire and conservative political donor Charles Koch.The Board of Regents scheduled a special meeting for Wednesday. Golden took over as the university’s president in January following the death of former President John Bardo.The university announced Thursday that President Donald Trump’s daughter and adviser would give a virtual speech at the ceremony honoring this year’s graduates of WSU Tech. But her speech was canceled only hours later following criticism from faculty, students and alumni concerned about the Trump administration’s response to nationwide protests against police brutality. Golden later said the university is committed to diversity and that he canceled the speech to avoid a distraction from celebrating the students.Steve Clark, a former Kansas Board of Regents member from Wichita, told the board in a letter Monday that Koch Industries and several longtime donors and supporters are “very upset and quite vocal in their decisions to disavow any further support.”-------------WICHITA —WSU Tech has made a change in who will speak at their weekend virtual graduation event.<figure>

 </figure>On Thursday morning, the school announced that Ivanka Trump, advisor to the president of the United States, as a planned speaker at the college’s virtual commencement ceremony scheduled for Saturday.The invitation was extended in February and Ms. Trump offered to record a congratulatory message to graduates to be played during the event, according to a statement released late Thursday from Dr. Sheree Utash, President, WSU Tech."In light of the social justice issues brought forth by George Floyd’s death, I understand and take responsibility that the timing of the announcement was insensitive. For this, I’m sorry that was never the intent, and I want you to know I have heard you and we are responding," according to Utash."Our focus with commencement has always been about our graduates and celebrating their accomplishments. To ensure this our only commencement speaker will be Rebecca Zinabu, WSU Tech practical nursing graduate," according to a joint statement from Utash and Wichita State University president Jay Golden."The graduates will also be invited to separately view congratulatory messages from over 30 voices, including Ms. Trump and community members."Utash wrote, "I respect and understand the sharply divided reaction to today’s announcement. The college stands with those who fight injustice and advocate for social equity, and we’re profoundly proud of the diversity and social change being brought forth by our students, alumni, faculty, and staff.In my heart, my highest priority has always been to support our students and our community, and we will do so on Saturday."

October 10, 1925, in Beloit, KS to Everitt and Burnettie (Sloan) 
Burkhead. She grew up on the family farm seven miles south of Beloit 
with her three siblings and her loving parents.

returned to Manhattan for her new husband to finish up his last year of 
his college education. The young couple moved to Claflin where they 
started a family. Robert and Berdetta divorced twenty three years later.
 Berdetta stayed in Claflin to raise her children and live her life. 
Berdetta was an avid reader and was active in Independent Township 
Public Library serving on the board for two terms. Berdetta was active 
in the United Methodist Women's organization. She loved to sew and her 
favorite sewing projects was making costumes for Cabbage Patch Dolls for
 her friends grandchildren. Berdetta doted on her one grandchild 
treating him like he was a little prince.

Berdetta is survived by her children; Laurie Branan of Independence, 
MO, Thomas Branan of Claflin, KS, and James Branan of Hutchinson, KS; a 
grandson, Dexter Branan and wife Olive; and great-grandchild David. 
Preceding her in death are her parents, Everitt and Burnettie Burkhead; 
her first born, Baby Boy Branan; two sisters Joan Apple, and Ihla

Major Thomas A. Spencer, AUS (Ret, aged 85 passed away on June 1, 2020. He was born October 2, 1934 in San Diego, California, the son of Arthur and Nora P. Spencer of Chula Vista, California. Educated in the public schools of Chula Vista, California, he graduated in 1952 from Chula Vista High School. He worked a variety of jobs in the citrus industry, including a job at the Chula Vista Citrus Association Packing House and as a foreman for a citrus pest control operator. Photography was his primary hobby and he worked part time as a free-lance photographer and for the Chula Vista Photo Studio. With the demise of the citrus industry in San Diego County he secured employment in the U.S. Postal Service, at the Palm City Post Office, which was later incorporated into the Imperial Beach Post Office. He worked there as a letter carrier for 3-1/2 years before joining the Army in 1956.

He took his basic and advanced training in the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, Washington and worked his way up through the ranks. After attending Sixth Army NCO Academy at Fort Ord, California, was selected for Infantry Officers Candidate School at Fort Benning Georgia. After being commissioned in the infantry he held a variety of troop command positions including platoon leader, company commander of three different companies: two at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and one at Fort Ord, California; and as commander of two battalion sized units: one in Vietnam and one in Germany. In addition to these command positions he had staff assignments on battalion, brigade, division and corps level staffs as well as serving as an instructor at the U.S. Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia.

His military assignments included overseas tours to Korea (two years with the First Calvary Division, France (two years in the European Communication Zone Headquarters, Vietnam (almost three years, half as an advisor to Vietnamese Army and half assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, and Germany (for five years in the 5th U.S. Army Corps). In addition, he served at five stateside posts: Fort Lewis, Washington; Fort Ord, California; Fort Benning, Georgia; Fort Jackson, South Carolina; and Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He retired in 1976 with the rank of Major.

His military decorations include the Silver Star (the nation’s third highest award for gallantry in action, the Bronze Star for valor, two awards of the Bronze star for achievement, the Meritorious Service medal, two awards of the Air Medal for valor, nine awards of the Air Medal for achievement, the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnamese Campaign Medal (with seven stars, Korean Defense Service Medal, Reserve Forces Medal, Expert Infantryman’s Badge, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, and Valorous Unit Citation Award. Awards from the Vietnamese government include the Honor Medal First Class, Staff Service Medal First Class, Training Service Medal, Gallantry Cross with Gold Star with the Unit Cross of Gallantry Award with Palm Award and the Unit Civic Action Award. The Secretary of the Army named him a Distinguished Member of the 502nd Infantry Regiment.

Subsequent to retiring from active duty he worked an additional nine years in federal civil service as an Equal Employment Specialist, Cost and Management Analyst and National Emergency Planner, concluding with a total of 32-1/2 years of federal service as a GS-12 National Emergency Planner for the U.S. Army Engineer District at Fort Worth, Texas.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1971 from the University of Nebraska at Omaha under the Army Bootstrap Program, majoring in Business. Continuing in that field he earned a master’s degree in Business Administration from Boston University in 1975. He completed all but six months of his bachelor’s degree and all his master’s degree by attending evening classes, while on duty with the Army.

Major Spencer actively supported his alma mater, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, by funding two scholarships, the Beverly Grace (Ward) Spencer Memorial Accounting Scholarship and the Major Thomas A. Spencer Business Scholarship, as well as the Spencer Professorship in Government Accounting. He was a member of the university’s Chancellor’s Club and the Nebraska University system’s President’s Club, and a charter member of the Lucas Society of College of Business Administration at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He was inducted into the university’s Accounting Legacy Society along with his wife in October of 2013; and in 2019 was honored by the addition of his and his wife’s name to the Donor Recognition Wall of the Business College for cumulative donations of over one million dollars.

In addition to the scholarships at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Major Spencer endowed three scholarships at San Diego State University for his and his father’s Masonic Lodge and was honored in 2019 by the University by having his name on the donor monument at the University campus.

He was married at Fort Ord, California on July 1, 1966 to 1st Lieutenant Beverly Grace Ward, USAF (a 1972 graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha, a native of Russell County, Kansas, whom he met while they were stationed in France and Spain, respectively. During the late 1970’s he and his wife, a certified public accountant, established a financial and management service business in Arlington, Texas. The business consisted of work in accounting, real estate, investment management, auditing, and tax planning / preparations. He continued to run the business on a reduced scale after his wife’s death in 1983 and until 1994 when he fully retired.

Tom enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hiker. He founded two IVV hiking clubs in Texas, serving as president of one or the other continuously for 17 years, and was awarded the International Bronze Award for service by the IVV International Bodies. He also had a love for animals as evidenced by his support of organizations dedicated to the preservation endangered animals and the Humane Society. He was designated a Gold Charter Member of the Leadership Circle of the Cheetah Conservation Fund. His hobbies included photography, collecting figurines of cats, and hunting.

He was a member of the Chula Vista Elks Lodge No. 2011 and an endowed member of the National Rifle Association and the Texas State Rifle Association.

Tom was also active in the Masonic Fraternity, initially joining his hometown lodge, Chula Vista Masonic Lodge #626 F. and A.M. of Chula Vista, California in 1962 – a membership he retained and served on several committees for the lodge, and became a member of the Grand Master’s Circle in California. He joined the Columbus, Georgia Scottish Rite Bodies in 1964, and later transferred his membership to the Fort Worth, Texas, Scottish Rite Bodies, where he was honored by being selected as a Knight’s Commander of the Court of Honor in November 2009 and was elected to the 33rd Degree Inspector General Honorary in 2017. While stationed in Germany, he became a dual member of Oregon Military Lodge #223 in Frankfurt under the Grand Lodge of Oregon and served in several officer positions, ending as the Presiding Master in 1975. He founded a new lodge – Oregon Military Lodge #936 under the German Grand Lodge; in 1975 he served as its first Master. He remained active in his German lodge, publishing its quarterly bulletin for stateside members. He also joined the York Rite of Frankfurt, Germany, of which the Chapter and Council were under German Grand jurisdictions and the Commandry was an independent body under U.S. jurisdiction. He belonged to the Moslah Shrine Temple in Fort Worth, Texas, and was a permanent contributing member to the Shrine Hospitals for Crippled Children. He was a member of several research lodges in the United States, Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand. He continued to be active in lodge work after retiring, becoming a plural member of Arlington Lodge #438 A.F. and A.M of Arlington, Texas, and serving as librarian and education coordinator and on several committees. Major Spencer was also a member in perpetuity of San Diego Chapter of National Sojourners and Constitution Camp Heroes of ’76. He was honored by the American Canadian Grand Lodge of the United Grand Lodge of Germany by being elected as Honorary Junior Grand Warden in April of 2005 and elevated to Honorary Senior Grand Warden in 2012. Major Spencer was honored in 1996 with membership in the Brandon Carrol Society for his support of the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. In 1998 he became a full member of the Texas Grand Lodge Sam Houston Hall of Fame for his support of the Grand Lodge Library and Museum and became a Gold star patron of the library in 2000. He was the recipient of the DeMolay Legion of Honors degree in October 2012 and on three occasions the Peter Rassmusen Charity Jewel from the American Canadian Grand Lodge of Germany. He became active in the Harry S. Truman Club of the Masonic Home of the Grand Lodge of Missouri and was a member of the Harry S. Truman Society of that club. His interest in Masonry led him to pursue a four-year course in Masonic History and Philosophy at the Grand Lodge of South Australia and Northern Territories, receiving his diploma in 2010.

In 2014, Major Spencer gifted the family commercial real estate holdings he inherited to a charitable trust for the benefit of a number of public charities.

While not a member, he was a faithful attendee and supporter of the First United Methodist Church in Arlington.

Major Spencer was active in several veterans’ organizations including the Retired Officers Association, for which he served as president of the Lone Star chapter in Fort Worth in 1979. He was a life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Disabled American Veterans, Military Officers Association of America, Combat Infantry Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was designated a Distinguished Donor by the Disabled American Veterans National Service Foundation.

Major Spencer was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly, in 1983, his parents and his brother; and is survived by his stepdaughter Janet Gary along with several nieces and nephews and his long-time soulmate Martha Gagnon.

He wanted to be remembered as a soldier who served his country and did his duty the best he could and as a Mason who practiced his beliefs as best he could.

Funeral services were held at Moore Funeral Home by Masonic Lodge #438 on Monday, June 8, 2020 at 11:00 AM. Public and friends are invited to attend. A celebration of life will be held after the service at Moore Funeral Home. All are invited to attend. Burial with military honors will be at Vincent Cemetery in Osborne County, Kansas on Monday, June 15, 2020 at 10:30 AM alongside his wife and older brother, Dean. In lieu of flowers memorials should be made to the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, Texas. www.scottishriteforchildren.org. Anna (Ann) Hradecky Krayca went to be with her Lord on June 4, 2020 at the age of 103 years old in Russell, Kansas.

Ann was born to Frank and Albina (Dillenburg) Hradecky on the family farm near Fleming, Colorado on October 16, 1916.&nbsp; She married James Krayca on June 1, 1935 in Sterling, Colorado, and came to Goodland, Kansas to live on a farm north of Goodland.

Ann was the loving and devoted Mother of Jim, Richard, Ken, Wayne, David and Betty.&nbsp; She also enjoyed her role as Grandmother, Great Grandmother and Great Great Grandmother.&nbsp; Her interests included hand sewing, lottery tickets, crossword puzzles and reading Pioneer books.

Frances “Francie” Rohleder, 91, Hays, died Thursday, June 4, 2020 at HaysMed surrounded by her family.

She was born May 3, 1929 in Hays, the daughter of Mike and Bridget (Wasinger) Herman.&nbsp; She graduated from Girls Catholic High School in 1947.&nbsp; On October 4, 1948 she was united in marriage to Francis R. “Frank” Rohleder, and they celebrated 66 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on March 28, 2015.&nbsp; She was a custodian at the Eddy Clinic, the office manager and sales representative at Rohleder Electric, a homemaker, a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, and devoted to the Blessed Mother and praying the rosary. &nbsp; Francie was always involved in her children’s activities as their 4-H leader, the lunchroom lady at their school, and sewed many of their clothes, dresses, and costumes.&nbsp; She was an amazing cook, made delicious homemade jellies, and canned fruits and vegetables.&nbsp; She enjoyed being outdoors, flower gardening, camping, traveling, vacationing with friends, and spending time at the lake, but most of all, she loved her family.

Betty Joan Poppelreiter, 79, died March 18, 2020, at Tiffany Springs 
Senior Living and Rehabilitation Center, Kansas City, Missouri. She was 
born November 21, 1940, in Claflin, Kansas, the daughter of William and 
Elizabeth (Muller) Radenberg. Betty graduated from Claflin High School 
in 1958.

On May 1, 1965, she married Robert A. Poppelreiter at the Holy Name 
Catholic Church in Bushton, Kansas. He preceded her in death on October 
10, 2017.

A lifelong resident of Claflin, Betty worked for the Farmers and 
Merchants Bank of Claflin from 1958 to 1974. It was then that she 
decided to stay home and raise her family. In the 1990’s she returned to
 work at the Petroleum Club in Great Bend. After that she worked part 
time at Keating’s Grocery Store in Claflin for a few years.

Betty was a member of the United Methodist Women of Claflin. She 
enjoyed shopping, visiting with friends, collecting recipes and spending
 time with her grandkids.

She is survived by her daughters, Amie Attebery and husband Eric of 
Kansas City, Missouri; Julie Pletcher and husband Dan of Lawrence and 
Portis, Kansas; grandchildren, Ocean, Callie, Macy, and Ava Attebery of 
Kansas City, Missouri, and Jade and Dane Colclasure of Lawrence.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; sisters, Viola Talbot and Violet Krebbs; and a brother, Kenneth Radenberg.

Betty’s wishes were to not have a funeral just a visitation. Due to 
the COVID -19 restrictions at the time of her death visitation was 
postponed. Visitation with the family to greet friends is now scheduled 
for 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, June 12, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. A 
private family inurnment will be held prior to visitation at the Claflin
 Cemetery.&nbsp;&nbsp;

WICHITA, Kansas — For the last two months, employees
 at Walnut Valley Packing in El Dorado have been working extra hours, 
even Saturdays, to cut, grind and package meat so it can keep up with a 
sudden spike in demand.

“I think the first time in March when 
somebody walked into Walmart or Dillon’s and saw that there’s no meat, I
 think people kind of freaked out,” said Matt Carselowey, <a href="http://www.walnutvalleypacking.com/" target="_blank">Walnut Valley Packing</a>’s plant manager.&nbsp;

The lack of meat in grocery store chains is due in part to <a href="https://www.meatpoultry.com/articles/22993-covid-19-meat-plant-map">c</a><a href="https://www.meatpoultry.com/articles/22993-covid-19-meat-plant-map" target="_blank">oronavirus-related slowdowns and closures of meatpacking plants around the country</a>. But those supply chain difficulties are creating an opportunity for local food producers — from cattle to cabbage.

Before
 the pandemic, Walnut Valley was preparing to open up a second 
storefront in a nearby town. Carselowey said he had an entire store’s 
worth of inventory in the freezer, ready to be sold.

It was barely enough to meet demand. The small, family-owned beef, pork and game processor quickly sold out of everything.

“We’ve had a lot of new customers come through the door that might not have came in otherwise,” he said.

Many were just people trying to find meat anywhere they could. But for Carselowey, it was also an opportunity.

“I
 think this has kind of opened a lot more people’s eyes to ‘Where is my 
meat coming from,’” he said, adding that people might be realizing too 
that “small processors … can offer a different product or … unique 
products.”

Walnut Valley also processes meat for local cattle 
ranchers, who sell it under their own private label (it’s called direct 
marketing).

Normally, those ranchers can get meat processed in 
about a month. But now is far from normal, and Walnut Valley’s first 
open slot is May 2021.

“We are really struggling to meet demand for our product,” said Linda Pechin-Long, co-owner of <a href="https://www.grazetheprairie.com/" target="_blank">Graze The Prairie cattle ranch in the Flint Hills</a>. “Which is a good problem to have, I guess.”

Pechin-Long
 and her husband sell their meat online and at a few local farmers 
markets. But like many direct market ranchers, they’re struggling to get
 a spot at any of the few dozen local processors left in Kansas.

“Right
 now, we’re looking at not having summer sausage for Christmas because 
we usually schedule that for processing in October, and they are booked 
through January or February of next year,” she said.

The coronavirus also 
appears to be pushing people to tap into other local producers — at 
least more than they normally would. That includes farmers markets.

“Over the past three weeks, I’ve had consistent crowds showing up,” said Luke Snow, president of the <a href="https://oldtownfarmandartmarket.com/" target="_blank">Old Town Farm and Art Market in Wichita</a>. “Everyone’s I think just happy to get out in the fresh air and sunshine and do some shopping.”

He
 said while the pure number of people attending is a little lower than 
normal, sales have been through the roof. It’s the selling points of 
local food — knowing where it comes from, if chemicals were applied and 
who has handled it — that he thinks are more appealing than ever.

At the <a href="https://kansasgrowninc.com/" target="_blank">Kansas Grown Farmers Market</a>
 across town, Jill Stimatze with Natural to the Corr said they’ve also 
seen lots of new customers this spring.&nbsp;She said she thinks one reason 
is because people feel safer at the market.

“I feel like it’s 
because it’s in the open and actually people are not touching everything
 like they would in a grocery store,” she said.

A few booths 
away, Arno Miller of Miller’s Homestyle Meals told a similar story. He 
and his wife ramped up home-delivery service as the impacts of the 
coronavirus began to set in. In early May, they set a sales record.

“I have no idea whether it will be a long-term benefit or not,” he said. “But for the time being, we’re happy to serve.”

appears to be pushing people to tap into other local producers — at 
least more than they normally would. That includes farmers markets.“Over the past three weeks, I’ve had consistent crowds showing up,” said Luke Snow, president of the <a href="https://oldtownfarmandartmarket.com/" target="_blank">Old Town Farm and Art Market in Wichita</a>. “Everyone’s I think just happy to get out in the fresh air and sunshine and do some shopping.”He
 said while the pure number of people attending is a little lower than 
normal, sales have been through the roof. It’s the selling points of 
local food — knowing where it comes from, if chemicals were applied and 
who has handled it — that he thinks are more appealing than ever.<figure>

seen lots of new customers this spring.&nbsp;She said she thinks one reason 
is because people feel safer at the market.“I feel like it’s 
because it’s in the open and actually people are not touching everything
 like they would in a grocery store,” she said.A few booths 
away, Arno Miller of Miller’s Homestyle Meals told a similar story. He 
and his wife ramped up home-delivery service as the impacts of the 
coronavirus began to set in. In early May, they set a sales record.“I have no idea whether it will be a long-term benefit or not,” he said. “But for the time being, we’re happy to serve.”Brian

Pandemic pushed more Kansans to buy from local butchers, farmers

HaysMed, part of The University of Kansas Health System,&nbsp; is among 115 hospitals statewide being recognized for its exemplary achievements to improve patient safety.

The Kansas Healthcare Collaborative recognized Kansas hospitals recently at the conclusion of the AHA/HRET Network-a major patient safety initiative spearheaded by the American Hospital Association/Health Research &amp; Educational Trust and coordinated in Kansas by KHC.

HaysMed received the Highest Achievement with Distinction recognition for working toward AHA/HRET Network goals set by the Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services to reduce hospital-acquired conditions and preventable readmissions.&nbsp; This designation utilizes a data-driven approach to identify up to 14 "Highest Achievement" hospitals that demonstrated distinction through their improvement efforts and engagement throughout the initiative

"We are pleased to receive this special recognition of our team's patient-focused efforts to provide the best care possible to those we serve," said Eddie Herrman, president and CEO of HaysMed.&nbsp; "Working with the Kansas Healthcare Collaborative and its partners-as well as side-by-side with our peers across the state and with national experts-has provided our team the opportunity to advance patient safety and health outcomes more efficiently and effectively."

Since October 2016, more than 115 Kansas hospitals have worked collaboratively with KHC to achieve a 20 percent reduction in hospital-acquired conditions and a 12 percent reduction in 30-day hospital readmissions from 2014 baselines. Participating hospitals placed special focus on reducing patient harm, such as falls, adverse drug events, hospital-acquired infections, and pressure injuries. Hospitals also made progress in implementing key strategies for promoting health equity and patient and family engagement.

Hospitals across the state and nation have been working since 2010 to achieve national patient safety goals established by federal agencies. Nationwide, between 2010 and 2015, an estimated 125,000 fewer patients died in a hospital and approximately $22.8 billion in health care costs were saved as a result in reductions in hospital-acquired conditions, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

"We extend our congratulations and gratitude to all the hospitals across Kansas who participated in the AHA/HRET Network," said KHC Executive Director Allison Peterson DeGroff. "For several years, this community of collaborative peers has inspired and driven each other to excel in leading data-driven quality improvement. It is challenging work — and it is critical work. Each hospital's incremental changes lead to an exponential impact on the lives of patients and their families."

The AHA/HRET Network included more than 1,600 hospitals across 34 states and U.S.&nbsp; territories.

HaysMed recognized for patient safety achievements

JUNCTION CITY – A Kansas man has pleaded guilty to two counts of first degree felony murder, according to Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt.

On Thursday, Dion Jamel Green, 34, Junction City, pleaded guilty to the two counts in Geary County District Court. District Judge Steven L. Hornbaker accepted the pleas. 

Sentencing has been scheduled for October 28 at 1:30 p.m.

Green was charged with the crimes in connection with the December 2018 deaths of Jenna Schafer, of Junction City, and her unborn child.

The case was investigated by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Geary County Sheriff’s Office and the Junction City Police Department. Deputy Attorney General Vic Braden and Assistant Attorney General Michael R. Serra of Schmidt's office and Assistant Geary County Attorney Jason B. Oxford are prosecuting the case.

 </figure>WICHITA —WSU Tech has made a change in who will speak at their weekend virtual graduation event.On Thursday morning, the school announced that Ivanka Trump, advisor to the president of the United States, as a planned speaker at the college’s virtual commencement ceremony scheduled for Saturday.The invitation was extended in February and Ms. Trump offered to record a congratulatory message to graduates to be played during the event, according to a statement released late Thursday from Dr. Sheree Utash, President, WSU Tech."In light of the social justice issues brought forth by George Floyd’s death, I understand and take responsibility that the timing of the announcement was insensitive. For this, I’m sorry that was never the intent, and I want you to know I have heard you and we are responding," according to Utash."Our focus with commencement has always been about our graduates and celebrating their accomplishments. Kan. school cancels Ivanka Trump's commencement address

COLBY — Colby Community College will begin on the original published date of Aug. 17 and modify the academic calendar to end face-to-face classes Nov. 24, the school announced Thursday. The change comes in response to projections by health officials of a second COVID-19 outbreak in the fall.

Historic meeting at YMCA
 in 1920 may never have happened if not for 1918 pandemic

Getting past a disruption caused by a global pandemic is nothing new 
for professional baseball. Even as Major League Baseball considers a 
shortened season this year amid the ongoing coroanavirus outbreak, the 
sport faced an even more dire threat a century ago with the flu 
pandemic.

That event, combined with World War I and a major gambling scandal, jeopardized the very future of the game.

Part
 of what came next was history, made in Kansas City: the Negro Leagues 
were formed 100 years ago at the Paseo YMCA, just as professional 
baseball was trying to figure out how to move on from a series of 
world-altering events.

‘The biggest entertainment business in America.’

Before
 1917, Eliot Asinoff wrote in his bestseller “Eight Men Out” that 
baseball was “the biggest entertainment business in America.”

But 
in 1920, at the same time that Kansas City jazz was taking off in the 
18th and Vine district, Rube Foster of Chicago and J.L. Wilkinson, who 
had recently moved to Kansas City from Iowa, met at the nearby YMCA on 
The Paseo to formalize the Negro National League in the Negro Leagues.

 </figure>It was an unusual partnership for its time. Foster was black, and Wilkinson was white.“Foster,
 I understand, would’ve preferred to have had all-black leadership for 
the leagues, but could not deny the connection that Wilkinson had,” said
 Raymond Doswell, vice president and curator for Kansas City’s Negro 
Leagues Baseball Museum, which has been closed since mid-March as a 
precaution against the spread of the coronavirus.Foster knew 
Wilkinson from the integrated barnstorming team Wilkinson owned called 
the All Nations team. It was made up of players from a variety of 
backgrounds, including African Americans, Latino Americans and Asian 
immigrants.Barnstorming teams —semi-professional outfits that 
traveled around the country playing other local teams— got in on the 
success that professional baseball had produced at that time.“I 
do know the All Nations played the Chicago American Giants,” said Tom 
Fredrick, a Kansas City attorney who has published research on 
Wilkinson. “In other words, Rube Foster’s team, pre-Negro National 
League formation, in October of 1916. In Kansas City, Missouri.”Despite the difference in the color of their skin, Doswell said Foster and Wilkinson had a lot in common.“These were two baseball men who were visionaries in many respects, who understood the broader picture,” said Doswell.A war, a pandemic and a scandalTheir partnership, though, came out of global tragedy and turmoil.When the U.S. entered World War I in 1917, Wilkinson’s All Nations players were among those who enlisted according to Fredrick.“He (Wilkinson) lost All-Nations roster to the Great War. We know that,” he said.Things
 worsened in 1918 when baseball—and especially barnstorming teams that 
had to travel to make money—were hit hard by the global flu pandemic.Then, as now with the coronavirus, the flu impacted black communities more, according to Doswell.“There’s
 a lot of urbanization, so it’s easy for these kinds of things like the 
flu or even tuberculosis to sweep through black communities very 
easily,” he said. “That was a problem in some large communities for many
 years.”<figure>

 </figure>By 1919, the war had ended and the flu had subsided. But baseball had
 another lingering problem: gambling. Though an issue before the war and
 pandemic, the problem reached its apex when several members of the 
Chicago White Sox took money to intentionally lose the 1919 World Series
 against the Cincinnati Reds.After those chain of events, Doswell said Foster and Wilkinson converged in Kansas City in 1920.“They
 were being pushed by the black press mostly,” he said. “Black sports 
news editors were sometimes also the editors of different papers. They 
were commenting on the fact that black baseball was loose, and it was 
not organized.”Kansas City’s signature franchiseFrom
 Fredrick’s research on Wilkinson, it was discovered that Wilkinson, 
being the shrewd businessman that he was, planned to start up the Kansas
 City Monarchs, with or without an organized league.But as it 
turned out, the Monarchs became one of the league’s signature teams 
under Wilkinson’s ownership. Wilkinson, who entered the National 
Baseball of Fame in 2006, had earned the respect of his players.One of them was former Monarchs first baseman and manager Buck O’Neil, who before his death in 2006, praised Wilkinson.“J.L.
 (Wilkinson was) an outstanding individual. Great baseball mind,” he 
said. “He’s a promoter. He knew how to make money,” O’Neil said at that 
time.One hundred years ago, the formation of the Negro Leagues 
was a historic step for baseball, one that may never have happened if 
not for world-shaking events. That’ something for Major League Baseball 
to keep in mind now, as it tries to move on after another global 
pandemic.
