The Bob and Pat Schmidt Community Center is set to open this month.

Grow Hays received its occupancy permit last week.&nbsp;

Bright Minds will be opening its child care facility on the north side of the building, and the senior center will be moving into south side of the building before the end of the month.

The center area of the building is a community room that will be available to rent through Grow Hays. Call 785-628-3102&nbsp;for more information.

Grow Hays will host an official ribbon cutting at 9 a.m. Friday,&nbsp; Aug 29.

🎙 Schmidt Community Center complete, ribbon cutting set for Aug. 29

NEW YORK (AP) — Boeing workers who build fighter jets went on strike Monday at midnight Central Daylight Time.

About 3,200 workers at Boeing facilities in St. Louis; St. Charles, Missouri; and Mascoutah, Illinois, voted to reject a modified four-year labor agreement with Boeing, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union said Sunday.

In a post on X, the union said: “3,200 highly-skilled IAM Union members at Boeing went on strike at midnight because enough is enough.”

The vote followed members’&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/boeing-defense-machinists-union-contract-strike-60670fdfd1bbed54eb3e91ed682cc2c8">rejection last week of an earlier proposal</a>&nbsp;from the troubled aerospace giant, which had included a 20% wage increase over four years.

“IAM District 837 members build the aircraft and defense systems that keep our country safe,” said Sam Cicinelli, Midwest territory general vice president for the union, in a statement. “They deserve nothing less than a contract that keeps their families secure and recognizes their unmatched expertise.”

At the time of the earlier vote, union leaders had recommended approving the offer, calling it a “landmark agreement” and saying it would improve medical, pension and overtime benefits.

The union members rejected the latest proposal after a weeklong cooling-off period.

“We’re disappointed our employees rejected an offer that featured 40% average wage growth and resolved their primary issue on alternative work schedules," said Dan Gillian, Boeing Air Dominance vice president and general manager, and senior St. Louis site executive. "We are prepared for a strike and have fully implemented our contingency plan to ensure our non-striking workforce can continue supporting our customers.”

Boeing has been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/boeing-aviation-aircraft-air-india-crash-f12b20e65dc57ae655a1e0759b58938f">struggling</a>&nbsp;after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/boeing-plea-737-max-crashes-b34daa014406657e720bec4a990dccf6">two of its Boeing 737 Max airplanes crashed</a>, one in Indonesia in 2018 and the other in Ethiopia in 2019, killing 346 people. Police responded to the Habitat for Humanity of Ellis County ReStore, 2707 Broadway in Hays at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

The glass front door was broken. Officers cleared the building and found nothing immediately missing.

Habitat for Humanity rents the building. The nonprofit's landlord is checking with insurance to see if the vandalism will be covered.

The group is part of a global, nonprofit organization operated on Christian principles that works to eliminate substandard housing through construction, rehabilitation and advocacy for fair policies.

Habitat is fundraising to invest in another home for an Ellis County resident. The nonprofit earns money through the ReStore thrift store, which is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.

Donations can also be made to the local chapter by writing checks payable to Habitat for Humanity of Ellis County and sending them to P.O. Box 444​, Hays, KS 67601.

NEW YORK (AP) — Former Vice President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/kamala-harris">Kamala Harris</a>&nbsp;will have a memoir out in the fall on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/harris-democratic-presidential-nomination-eb43b6b346cc644b2d195315cb2bfb20">her historic presidential run</a>.

The book is called “107 Days,” the length of her abbreviated campaign, and will be published by Simon &amp; Schuster on Sept. 23.

On Wednesday, she announced that she&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kamala-harris-california-governor-2026-eeea5d7315d65cebb50692c5311379fb">will not run for California governor</a>&nbsp;in 2026, but she is still regarded as a potential presidential candidate for 2028. CBS Television announced that Harris will appear Thursday night on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” her first interview since the election.

Simon &amp; Schuster, where authors also include former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Washington Post journalist Bob Woodward, is calling the Harris book a “page-turning account,” with ”surprising and revealing insights.”

“Kamala Harris is a singular American leader,” Karp said in a statement. “‘107 DAYS’ captures the drama of running for president better than just about anything I’ve read. It’s one of the best works of political nonfiction Simon &amp; Schuster has ever published. It’s an eyewitness contribution to history and an extraordinary story.”

Financial terms for “107 Days,” which is listed at 320 pages, were not disclosed. In 2019, Penguin Books published Harris’&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/9a8a5861627846f9b378bf86e9c27966">“The Truths We Hold: An American Journey</a>,” timed to coincide with her presidential run for the 2020 election. Harris&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ap-top-news-ca-state-wire-politics-election-2020-kamala-harris-9f15f9bae46c54de8d88ad3e8388e4be">dropped out before the first primary</a>&nbsp;but was eventually chosen by Biden to be his running mate.

“Just over a year ago, I launched my campaign for President of the United States,” Harris said in a video announcement on Thursday. “107 days traveling the country, fighting for our future — the shortest presidential campaign in modern history. Since leaving office, I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on those days and with candor and reflection, I’ve written a behind-the-scenes account of that journey. I believe there’s value in sharing what I saw, what I learned, and what it will take to move forward.”

Simon &amp; Schuster CEO Jonathan Karp declined to offer any specifics on what Harris will write about, including her thoughts on questions about&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-trump-pardon-fitness-reelection-interview-eb84cf6c3e201fa6100419b9fe616f8a">President Joe Biden’s fitness for office</a>, but said Harris “addresses everything we would want her to address.”

Harris ended up heading the Democratic ticket after Biden dropped out last July in the wake of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-2024-lawmakers-debate-2c426f98063ab30143a7675cba10a5b4">a disastrous debate performance</a>, and she was defeated last November by Republican Donald Trump. VICTORIA- Victoria will double in size as Herzogfest draws crowds with the scent of bierocks and the spirit of German culture.

Brenton Hoffman, president of Herzogfest, said the two-day celebration, which will be Aug. 8-9, features traditional food, children’s activities, a car show and live music.

"It's our hometown's annual festival that represents our German heritage," he said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has confirmed former Fox News host Jeanine Pirro as the top federal prosecutor for the nation’s capital, filling the post after President Donald Trump withdrew his controversial first pick, conservative activist Ed Martin Jr.

Pirro, a former county prosecutor and elected judge, was confirmed 50-45. Kansas U.S. Senators Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall voted with majority.

 Before becoming the acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia in May, she co-hosted the Fox News show “The Five” on weekday evenings, where she frequently interviewed Trump.

Moran, Marshall vote to confirm former Fox host as U.S. Attorney for DC

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials have told more than a half-dozen of the nation’s top medical organizations that they will no longer help establish vaccination recommendations.

The government told the organizations on Thursday via email that their experts are being disinvited from the workgroups that have been the backbone of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.

The organizations include the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

“I’m concerned and distressed,” said Dr. William Schaffner, a Vanderbilt University vaccine expert who for decades has been involved with ACIP and its workgroups.

He said the move will likely propel a confusing fragmentation of vaccine guidance, as patients may hear the government say one thing and hear their doctors say another.

One email said the organizations are “special interest groups and therefore are expected to have a ‘bias’ based on their constituency and/or population that they represent.”

A federal health official on Friday confirmed the action, which was first reported by Bloomberg.

The decision was the latest development in what has become a saga involving the ACIP. The committee, created in 1964, makes recommendations to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on how vaccines that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration should be used.

CDC directors have traditionally almost always approved those recommendations, which are widely heeded by doctors and greenlight insurance coverage for shots.

U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was a leading voice in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rfk-jr-vaccine-trump-science-autism-9b99621b01f11b7f0bdc81e5a0b82d2b">anti-vaccine movement</a>&nbsp;before becoming the U.S. government’s top health official, and in June&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kennedy-cdc-acip-vaccines-3790c89f45b6314c5c7b686db0e3a8f9">abruptly fired</a>&nbsp;the entire ACIP after accusing them of being too closely aligned with manufacturers. He&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cdc-acip-vaccine-committee-9f58e1f004075b081718ff078de88d76">handpicked replacements</a>&nbsp;that include several vaccine skeptics.

The workgroups typically include committee members and experts from medical and scientific organizations. At workgroup meetings, members evaluate data from vaccine manufacturers and the CDC, and formulate vaccination recommendation proposals to be presented to the full committee.

The structure was created for several reasons, Schaffner said. The professional groups provide input about what might and might not be possible for doctors to implement. And it helped build respect and trust in ACIP recommendations, having the buy-in of respected medical organizations, he said.

Workgroup members are vetted for conflicts of interest, to make sure than no one who had, say, made money from working on a hepatitis vaccine was placed on the hepatitis committee, Schaffner noted.

Also disinvited from the groups were the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Physicians, the American Geriatrics Society, the American Osteopathic Association, the National Medical Association and the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases.

In a joint statement Friday, the AMA and several of the other organizations said: “To remove our deep medical expertise from this vital and once transparent process is irresponsible, dangerous to our nation’s health, and will further undermine public and clinician trust in vaccines.”

They urged the administration to reconsider the move “so we can continue to feel confident in its vaccine recommendations for our patients.”

Some of the professional organizations have criticized Kennedy’s changes to the ACIP, and three of the disinvited groups last month joined&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lawsuit-vaccines-kennedy-95a1aa23c3f015f7a35a570f5ef8da36">a lawsuit</a>&nbsp;against the government over Kennedy’s decision to stop recommending COVID-19 vaccines for most children and pregnant women.

In a social media post Friday, one of the Kennedy-appointed ACIP members — Retsef Levi — wrote that the working groups “will engage experts from even broader set of disciplines!”

Levi, a business management professor, also wrote that working group membership “will be based on merit &amp; expertise — not membership in organizations proven to have (conflicts of interest) and radical &amp; narrow view of public health!”

HHS officials have not said which people are going to be added to the ACIP workgroups.

AMA and other medical associations are kicked out of CDC vaccine workgroups

WICHITA – The Hays Larks come up one win shy of a return
trip to the NBC World Series finals Friday, falling to the Lonestar Kraken 9-8 at
Eck Stadium.

The Larks (32-5-1) trailed by as many as seven runs in the
game but came back to force extra innings. But in the 10th, Lonestar pushed a
run across to advance to the NBC World Series finals Saturday against the
Hutchinson Monarchs. 

The Larks broke onto the scoreboard early, scoring a run on
Thomas Lyssy RBI single, putting Hays up 1-0.

Lonestar answered back with two runs in the bottom of the
second and then exploded for six more runs in the fourth inning.

The Kraken got a homerun and then took advantage of five
straight walks, six total in the inning, for the 8-1 lead. 

Hays got a run back on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth
and then added two runs in the seventh.

The Larks took advantage of three free passes in the inning.
Hays scored on a Trent Baker RBI single and a Brady Kreutzer walk with the
bases loaded, cutting the Kraken's lead to 8-4.

Hays got back-to-back singles to open the top of the eighth
inning and then opened the scoring with a two-run Tabor Stokes double, cutting
the deficit to 8-6.

After two men were retired, Baker singled in Stokes, making
it 8-7.

Still trailing by one, in the top of the ninth inning, the
Larks manufactured the tying run to send the game to extra innings.

A walk and a stolen base by Kaleb Duncan, followed by a

⚾ Larks season ends in extras at NBC World Series

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Friday removed the head of the agency that produces the monthly jobs figures after a report showed hiring&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jobs-unemployment-economy-trump-federal-reserve-68a15f89d68793a6cf88a522ff33246c">slowed in July</a>&nbsp;and was much weaker in May and June than previously reported.

Trump, in a post on his social media platform, alleged that the figures were manipulated for political reasons and said that Erika McEntarfer, the director of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, who was appointed by former President Joe Biden, should be fired. He provided no evidence for the charge.

“I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY,” Trump said on Truth Social. “She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified.”

Trump later posted: “In my opinion, today’s Jobs Numbers were RIGGED in order to make the Republicans, and ME, look bad.”

The charge that the data was faked is an explosive one that threatens to undercut the political legitimacy of the U.S. government's economic data, which has long been seen as the “gold standard” of economic measurement globally. Economists and Wall Street investors have for decades generally accepted the data as free from political bias.

Trump’s move to fire McEntarfer represented another extraordinary assertion of presidential power. He has wielded the authority of the White House to try to control the world’s international trade system, media companies, America’s top universities and Congress’ constitutional power of the purse, among other institutions.

McEntarfer's firing was roundly condemned by a group that included two former BLS commissioners, including William Beach, who was appointed by Trump to the position. They particularly objected to the charge that the data was altered for political reasons.

“This rationale for firing Dr. McEntarfer is without merit and undermines the credibility of federal economic statistics that are a cornerstone of intelligent economic decision-making by businesses, families, and policymakers,” the statement from the group, the Friends of BLS, said.

In addition to Beach, the statement was signed by Erica Groshen, BLS commissioner under former President Barack Obama.

“Firing the Commissioner ... when the BLS revises jobs numbers down (as it routinely does) threatens to destroy trust in core American institutions, and all government statistics,” Arin Dube, an economist at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, said on X. “I can’t stress how damaging this is.”

After Trump's initial post, Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer said on X that McEntarfer was no longer leading the bureau and that William Wiatrowski, the deputy commissioner, would serve as the acting director.

“I support the President’s decision to replace Biden’s Commissioner and ensure the American People can trust the important and influential data coming from BLS,” Chavez-DeRemer said.

Friday’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bls.gov/news.release/pdf/empsit.pdf">jobs report</a>&nbsp;showed that just 73,000 jobs were added last month and that 258,000 fewer jobs were created in May and June than previously estimated. The report suggested that the economy has sharply weakened during Trump's tenure, a pattern consistent with a slowdown in economic growth during the first half of the year and an increase in inflation during June that appeared to reflect the price pressures created by the president's tariffs.

“What does a bad leader do when they get bad news? Shoot the messenger,” Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said in a Friday speech.

McEntarfer was nominated by Biden in 2023 and became the Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics in January 2024. Commissioners typically serve four-year terms but since they are political appointees can be fired. The commissioner is the only political appointee of the agency, which has hundreds of career civil servants.

The Senate confirmed McEntarfer to her post 86-8, with now Vice President JD Vance among the yea votes.

Trump focused much of his ire on the revisions the agency made to previous hiring data. Job gains in May were revised down to just 19,000 from a previously revised 125,000, and for June they were cut to 14,000 from 147,000. In July, only 73,000 positions were added. The unemployment rate ticked up to a still-low 4.2% from 4.1%.

“No one can be that wrong? We need accurate Jobs Numbers,” Trump wrote. “She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified. Important numbers like this must be fair and accurate, they can’t be manipulated for political purposes.”

Trump has not always been so suspicious of the monthly jobs report and responded enthusiastically after the initial May figures came out on June 6 when it was initially reported that the economy added 139,000 jobs.

The monthly employment report is one of the most closely-watched pieces of government economic data and can cause sharp swings in financial markets. The disappointing figure sent U.S. market indexes about 1.5% lower Friday.

The revisions to the May and June numbers were quite large and surprising to many economists. At the same time, every monthly jobs report includes revisions to the prior two months' figures. Those revisions occur as the government receives more responses from businesses to its survey, which help provide a more complete picture of employment trends each month.

In the past decade, companies have taken longer to respond, which may have contributed to larger monthly revisions.

The proportion of companies responding to the surveys has also fallen steadily over the past 10 years, but the survey still gets responses from roughly 200,000 business locations, which can be independent companies or franchises of larger chains.

The monthly jobs report has long been closely guarded within the BLS, with early copies held in safes under lock and key to prevent any leaks or early dissemination.

Kan. U.S. Senator glad Trump fired official overseeing jobs report

TOPEKA —The Kansas Department of Health reported no new cases of measles over the past week in the state. The state reported 90 cases in 11 counties and eight hospitalizations last week. All but three of the cases were connected, and most in Gray County.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press reported U.S. kindergarten vaccination rates inched down again last year and the share of children with exemptions rose to an all-time high, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/schoolvaxview/data/index.html">federal data</a>&nbsp;posted Thursday.

The fraction of kids exempted from vaccine requirements rose to 4.1%, up from 3.7% the year before. It's the third record-breaking year in a row for the exemption rate, and the vast majority are parents withholding shots for nonmedical reasons.

In addition, 92.5% of 2024-25 kindergartners got their required measles-mumps-rubella shots, down slightly from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/vaccinations-kindergarten-exemptions-cdc-1c0f9a196a70491fccf48b9125090de0">the previous year</a>. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the vaccination rate was 95% — the level that makes it unlikely that a single infection will spark a disease cluster or outbreak.

The vaccination numbers were posted as the U.S. experiences its worst year for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/measles-outbreaks-us-mmr-vaccine-rfk-jr-518e1059923135d79a2127a02e31bac2">measles spread</a>&nbsp;in more than three decades, with more than 1,300 cases so far.

“The concern, of course, is that with a further dip in the (vaccination) coverage, we’re going to see even more measles in the coming months,” said Dr. Sean O’Leary, of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

It's possible that this year's outbreaks may spur more parents to get their children vaccinated before they go to school, said O'Leary, a University of Colorado pediatric infectious diseases specialist.

But Dr. Philip Huang isn't optimistic. Texas was particularly hard hits by measles this year, with more than half of the cases reported nationally. Despite that, the state&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/texas-vaccines-measles-outbreak-exemptions-rfk-ab4aea44661153a789472f9d7fa8d17b">passed a law</a>&nbsp;making it easier for parents to get school vaccine exemptions for their kids.

“It's crazy,” said Huang, Dallas County's health director.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention traditionally releases the vaccination coverage data in its flagship publication, the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. CDC officials usually speak to the trends and possible explanations, and stress the importance of vaccinations. This year, the agency quietly posted the data online and — when asked about it — emailed a statement.

“The decision to vaccinate is a personal one. Parents should consult their health care providers on options for their families,” the statement said, adding; “Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect children from serious diseases like measles and whooping cough, which can lead to hospitalization and long-term health complications.”

The wording is more ambivalent about the importance of vaccinations than in the past. That is in keeping with communications from U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a leading voice in the anti-vaccine movement before President Donald Trump put him in charge of federal health agencies.

O'Leary noted the changes in the CDC messaging, which places personal choice before community protection.

“To sort of weaken the language or weaken the messaging that they're sending is very concerning, because what they say does matter,” he said.

Public health officials focus on vaccination rates for kindergartners because schools can be cauldrons for germs and launching pads for community outbreaks.

For years, those rates were high, thanks largely to school attendance mandates that required key vaccinations. All U.S. states and territories require that children attending child care centers and schools be vaccinated against&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/parents/by-age/years-4-6.html">a number of diseases</a>, including, measles, mumps, polio, tetanus, whooping cough and chickenpox.

All states allow exemptions for children with medical conditions that prevent them from receiving certain vaccines. And most&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ncsl.org/health/states-with-religious-and-philosophical-exemptions-from-school-immunization-requirements">also permit exemptions</a>&nbsp;for religious or other nonmedical reasons.

In the last decade, the percentage of kindergartners with medical exemptions has held steady, at about 0.2%. But the percentage with nonmedical exemptions has risen.

The rates can be influenced by policies that make it harder or easier to obtain exemptions, and by local attitudes among families and doctors about the need to get children vaccinated. Online misinformation and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/arkansas-governor-hutchinson-covid-vaccine-hesitancy-09cadd2e75ddd5a4c0758b2cb1b6cbfd">the political divide</a>&nbsp;that emerged around COVID-19 vaccines have led more parents to question routine childhood vaccinations, experts say.

According to the CDC data, 15.4% of kindergartners had&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/vaccines-waivers-schools-measles-idaho-e7015d8fd38ec80802eeae350755a402">an exemption</a>&nbsp;to one or more vaccines in Idaho in the last school year. But fewer than 0.5% did in Connecticut.

It’s good news that the vast majority of parents continue to get their kids vaccinated, O’Leary said. And it’s noteworthy that there is a gap between the percentage vaccinated and the percentage who are exempted — meaning there likely are unmet access issues, he added.

KDHE has good news on number of measles cases in Kansas

WILSON — Kansas Originals, after 37 years of selling arts, crafts, books, and Kansas-made food products, is facing the demolition of its building and supporters thought it might be the end of the store and its mission.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/925f00e0-e00a-49cb-98b3-acfc1aeb3dd3">Although the building at exit 206 of Interstate 70 is still slated for demolition to make way for a new truck stop</a>, Kansas Originals has found a new home.

The store will close its off-interstate location on Sept. 30 and open on Oct. 1 at 2519 Ave. E in downtown Wilson.

Marge Lawson, Kansas Orginals CEO, said the new location will have a smaller showroom, but the nonprofit will have off-site storage to make up some of the difference.

The new location will have the same events as the former, including tastings of Kansas wines and events to meet local artisans.

"We're going to make it even better," Lawson said.

The nonprofit that operates the store owns its building, but not the land on which it sits. The building is set to be demolished on Nov. 30, Lawson said.

The Kansas Originals board is also pursuing satellite shops. The nonprofit is exploring a partnership with travel centers along the interstate. The organization had a satellite shop in the Topeka travel center until the pandemic hit in 2020.

Consumers can order some products from the store's website,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansasoriginals.com/.">www.kansasoriginals.com.</a>&nbsp;Lawson said the board is considering revamping its website and using it to promote more of the products available through the store.

However, she said because many of the crafts are handmade, inventory is limited.

The store will also likely add new signage to direct people from the interstate to the new store in Wilson.

Lawson, who was a co-founder of the Kansas Orginals, said she is thrilled the mission of the shop will continue.

She explained that mission in a letter to the Hays Post in May, "Our mission is to provide marketplaces for the work of Kansas artists, craftsmen and food producers, especially those who are 62 or over, low-income, disabled, minorities or women in business."

According to&nbsp;Post Rock Opportunities Foundation, which is the nonprofit that supports Kansas Originals,  more than 1,000 corporations, businesses, and individuals have supported the nonprofit through grants, sponsorships and monetary donations since its founding.

The Smoky Hill Foundation, Merrill Foundation, Kansas Arts Commission and Dane G. Hansen Foundation are among the Kansas Originals' supporters, as well as the local artisans and craftspeople who donate their work to fundraisers.

Kansas Originals will join other tourist stops in Wilson, and Lawson said she hopes the store will draw more visitors to the community of about 800.

Wilson proudly promotes its Czech heritage, with the <a href="https://www.travelks.com/listing/worlds-largest-czech-egg/41977/">world's largest Czech egg</a> and an annual <a href="https://wilsonczechfest.com/">After Harvest Czech Festival</a> that was celebrated last weekend.

It is also the home of the historic <a href="https://www.midlandrailroadhotel.com/">Midland Railroad Hotel</a>, and t<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/faccd0a7-80dc-4f2f-99f8-e084f88cb981">he community has rallied to create an outdoor entertainment venue from its former historic opera house, which burned in 2009.</a>

That new venue will open later this month.

When the nonprofit was first notified of the developers' plans, Lawson said she was afraid Kansas Originals might be forced to close. Now, she's looking toward the future.

"Yes. I am happy," she said. "It's going to be challenging, but it gives us exciting new opportunities."

The Ellis County Commission will be asked during its 8:30 a.m. meeting Tuesday to approve a resolution that will set a public hearing for Big Creek Estates.

The public hearing would be set for 8:30 a.m. Sept. 16, allowing the community to give their input to the commission on the proposed Reinvestment Housing Incentive District before final decisions are made.

The incentive district covers 13 homes planned southeast of Hays,&nbsp;with construction costs estimated at $650,000.

 </figure>The incentive district covers 13 homes planned southeast of Hays,&nbsp;with construction costs estimated at $650,000.<h2>Local Environmental Protection Program septic grant extension</h2>The commission will discuss the extension of its Local Environmental Protection Program and a $50,000 grant awarded by the Kansas Department of Health for the 2026 state fiscal year.The grant assists with the cost of repairing or replacing failing septic systems for low-income households, using the 2024 Federal Poverty Guidelines to determine eligibility:• 200% or below the federal poverty level gets 100% coverage with grant funds •&nbsp;201 to 250% of the federal poverty level gets 85% of coverage with grant funds •&nbsp;251 to 300% of the federal poverty level gets 75% coverage with grant funds<h2>Text-to-speech automated dispatch solution</h2>The commission will be asked to approve the purchase of text-to-speech dispatch software that would automatically send radio alerts and broadcast incident information through a digital voice over dispatch radio channels.The Emergency Communication Center currently relies on 911 dispatchers to manually notify emergency responders and give information over the radio.&nbsp;At times, this requires the dispatcher to pause communication with the 911 caller to complete the process.The commission will consider two proposals, including one that fits within the allocated budget at $63,153 and an estimated annual service cost of $3,028 after the second year.<h2>Capital improvement projects</h2>The commission is continuing its discussion on capital improvement projects, including the possibility of issuing a bond to fund more than $9.75 million in facility upgrades.The projects would be funded mainly through sales tax and reserve funds. The commission will also review photos of the EMS and fire station facilities in the city of Ellis.Other projects being considered include renovations to the Sheriff’s Office and Communications Department, replacement of fan coil units in the Administrative Building and an HVAC system upgrade at the courthouse.<h2>Third draft of the 2026 Ellis County budget</h2>The commission will review the third draft of the 2026 budget, which features updates to the general fund, capital, and road and bridge budgets.Two changes include a $9,000 decrease in the appraiser's budget and any last-minute changes resulting from new personnel hires.The current draft has a 1.84 mill levy increase, from 35.99 mills to 37.83. mills.The mill levy increase includes the commissioners' request to add 1 mill ($542,695), which will replace the expected revenue decrease of the Oil and Gas Depletion fund ($425,865) in future years.The proposed budget also includes a $200,000 increase in interest revenue. That will help reduce the overall mill levy by one-third of a mill for 2026.Final changes can be made by Aug. 12, with the public hearing set for Sept. 9.<h2>Other business</h2>The commission will discuss potential dates for two upcoming meetings: a county work session and a joint meeting with the Hays City Commission.You can view the full agenda <a href="https://www.ellisco.net/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Agenda/_08052025-689">here</a>.
