The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating a shooting that occurred early Sunday morning in Hays, Kansas, resulting in the death of an officer with the Hays Police Department.

On Saturday, Sept. 27, just before midnight, Hays Police Department (HPD) received a 911 call indicating a female subject had escaped a domestic violence incident at a residence in the 2000 block of E. 21st St. The woman reported that while she attempted to flee, her significant other, identified as Zane Wickham, 34, of Hays, drove his truck into her vehicle. She ran to a nearby home to call for help.

Preliminary information indicates that Sept. 28, at approximately 1:55 a.m., officers from HPD and a trooper with the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) were setting up a perimeter near the backyard of Wickham’s residence in the 2200 block of Downing St. A single shot was fired from inside the house, and the round struck a HPD officer.

Officers immediately performed life-saving measures. The officer was then transported via air to a regional hospital. Despite efforts, he died from his injuries, just after 4 a.m.

The HPD Special Situation Response Team, the KHP Special Response Team, and the KBI High Risk Warrant Team responded to the residence where Wickham had barricaded. The teams negotiated with the suspect. Gas munitions, projectiles intended to break windows, and a surveillance drone were deployed into the residence during the standoff. No law enforcement officers fired their duty weapons throughout the incident.

At approximately, 6:15 a.m., tactical teams entered the house and found Wickham deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

When this investigation concludes, case findings will be presented to the Ellis County Attorney. The investigation is ongoing.

The City of Hays will identify the fallen officer in a later release, once all appropriate notifications have been made.

Former Gov. Jeff Colyer to speak at FHSU

To kick off Homecoming weekend, a seven-figure gift was revealed at a dedication and major gift announcement at Fort Hays State University Friday morning. The transformative donation from Stephen, Tatiana, and the Tebo family will support the renovation of FHSU’s on-campus library, which will proudly carry the name Tebo Library moving forward.&nbsp;

The renaming of FHSU’s library not only honors the Tebo family’s extraordinary generosity, but also reflects the values they live by – grit, determination, perseverance, vision, and innovation – principles deeply woven into the spirit of Fort Hays State itself. &nbsp;

From humble beginnings in Hill City, Kan., Stephen had an entrepreneurial drive at the young age of eight, shining shoes at a local barbershop. By the time he was eleven years old, his passion for collecting and selling coins ignited, which led him to establish Tebo Coin shortly after enrolling at Fort Hays State. The thriving business not only financed his college education but also laid the foundation for what would become a successful career in real estate.

A 1967 graduate of Fort Hays State University, Stephen fondly remembers the library as more than a building. It offered him knowledge, connection, and opportunity.

“Supporting the library felt like a meaningful way to give back,” said Stephen. “Fort Hays State gave me the education and confidence to pursue my goals, and it continues to be a source of great pride for me. I’m grateful for the role the university played in my life, and giving back is one way I can honor that legacy while helping future students create their own.”

In a moment that captured the heart of the celebration, Stephen invited his great-grandson, Ryker Tebo, to the stage to join him in saying a few words. Standing tall on a stepstool at the podium, seven-year-old Ryker charmed the crowd as he spoke about his great-grandpa’s love for Fort Hays State University. With confidence well beyond his years, he closed by saying, “The Tebo family is proud to be doing something so special for this school and for all the students. And who knows – maybe I’ll be studying in this library someday, too!”

With the current library constructed nearly 60 years ago, the building had begun to show its age. Its spaces and infrastructure couldn’t keep up with the way today’s students learn, collaborate, and connect. The time had come to strengthen the building’s foundation, modernize the facility and its amenities, and infuse the library with natural light to create an inspiring environment for future FHSU students.

In May 2024, FHSU embarked on a comprehensive renovation to the then-named Forsyth Library, estimated at nearly $28 million. At Friday’s announcement, special recognition was given to Senator Jerry Moran. His pivotal efforts secured $19 million in federal grant funding, which helped take the renovation project from dream to reality.

“I am truly privileged to share in this celebration,” said dean of library services Ginger Williams. “The library needed new life, and what a fitting time for this new chapter in our history. The original Forsyth Library, now McCartney Hall, was named after General George A.&nbsp;Forsyth, an army officer stationed at Fort Hays, the nearby U.S. Army fort.&nbsp;The Tebo family’s gift is allowing us to honor the past while embracing the future.”

FHSU President Dr. Tisa Mason echoed the sentiment by saying, “Today, we proudly announce the renaming of our library not merely as a tribute to the Tebo family’s remarkable support and ties to Fort Hays State, but as a lasting testament to the values they embody.” &nbsp;

Thanks to the generous support of donors like Stephen, Tatiana, and the Tebo family, who have already stepped forward to help bring this project to life. Join them in making an impact on FHSU students for generations to come.

It is with deep sorrow, the City of Hays confirms the tragic loss of Hays Police Department Sgt. Scott Heimann.

Heimann was killed in the line of duty while responding to a barricaded subject incident.

Despite the immediate and courageous efforts of fellow officers and first responders, he succumbed to his injuries.

Heimann served Hays with honor, courage, and dedication since 2016. Moreover, he was a constant presence in the community and frequently went above and beyond as a positive role model to all that knew him.

His loss is a tragic reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face every day.

We are devastated, and extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fellow officers.

As a city, we mourn together. We will remember Scott not only for how he served, but for who he was: a dedicated professional who served our city with unwavering commitment, integrity, and bravery.

We ask the community to keep Scott’s loved ones in your thoughts and respect their privacy during this incredibly difficult time.

“The City Commission extends our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of our fallen officer,” said Mayor Sandy Jacobs. “His service and sacrifice in protecting our community will never be forgotten. We stand united with our Police Department and with the entire community as we navigate this difficult time. We ask everyone to keep all those affected in their thoughts and prayers."

“Today we are tragically reminded that Police Officers serve and protect their communities putting the lives of others above their own,” said Police Chief Don Scheibler. “Sgt. Scott Heimann gave his life in this service exemplifying dedication to the community and the safety of others.”

“Our department, and community alike, will greatly miss his involvement, professionalism, and positive impact in the City of Hays. I hope the community recognizes the service of Sgt. Heimann and takes this moment to honor his service.”

No further information is being released by the City of Hays at this time.

More than 125 children in the last 49 years — that's how many Mary Mellick has opened her home to in Hays through her child care.

"The kids are part of our lives. My husband and I, they're just like special grandkids and we're like grandparents to them at this point," Mellick said.

Mellick opened her child care so she could stay home with her four children, but it soon became a lifelong career. Although she faced challenges such as long hours and balancing her family life, she has continued to build lasting relationships.

"A good number of [former children] come by," she said. "They still treat me like family... I don't want that type of relationship and love between us to end."

In the early years, Mellick’s own children helped out at the child care, where she often cared for up to 10 children a day, clocking in from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Mellick usually cares for children from infancy through about the age of 9, with many later returning as parents and bringing their own children to the child care.

Mellick said she has no plans to retire, so she has scaled back to caring for about three children a day to continue doing what she loves.

"The biggest challenges are the everyday struggles of toddlers and their mood swings. Raising other people's kids isn't always easy," she said.

Mellick said the close connections she has formed with the children she has cared for have even led to invitations to their weddings and graduations.

At her child care, Mellick employs a play-based learning approach, focusing on activities that teach social skills and promote appropriate public behavior. She added that the toys are purchased out of her own pocket.

Mellick said she has seen many changes since starting her child care, including shifts in family dynamics, generational differences and new state regulations that she has had to adjust to.

"For many years, this profession was not respected as a profession or a career, so I'm glad to see that the mindset is changing," she said.

Mellick advises those entering the child care field not to give up too soon, even when the rules and challenges seem overwhelming.

"The rewards are bigger than a paycheck," she said.

Brandy Ridgway, a parent who brought her children to Mellick years ago, nominated her as September’s Child Care Champion.

"Mary continues to treat them as if they are the most valuable children in the world,"&nbsp;Ridgway said of her children. "She goes out of her way to engage with them, show them love, encourage their growth and challenge them to be their best.

Her care and influence extend far beyond the walls of child care, leaving a lasting impact on both the children and their families. Mary truly embodies what it means to be a Child Care Champion."

Child Care Champion scales back to continue her passion

The Newman Civic Fellowship is a yearlong program that recognizes students who stand out for their leadership potential and commitment to creating positive change in communities. Fellows are nominated by Campus Compact member presidents and chancellors, who are invited to select one exemplary community-committed student from their campus each year.

During his time at FHSU, Bechle has been extensively involved and has served in multiple leadership positions, including president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and the Student Research Cluster; vice president of Model United Nations and Grace Evangelism. He has also competed as a student-athlete on the cross country and track team.

He has worked on an NSF-funded community-driven victim services grant, participated in an internship experience with the Ellis County Attorney’s Office, volunteered for service, and conducted research on justice reform.

Bechle’s research into gender-based violence has led him to commit to addressing these issues through advocacy and legal reform. He studies how geography intersects with justice, and how overlooked populations, particularly small towns, often lack needed resources.

“I am driven to seek justice for those silenced by domestic violence and sexual assault. My research has fueled a passion to champion survivors, and it inspires me to dedicate my legal career to prosecuting serious sex crimes and giving a voice to those who have been unheard,” he said.

Bechle, who is double-majoring in criminal justice and political science, said he is concerned about the deep-rooted challenges surrounding relationship-based violence in rural communities.

“As a Newman Civic Fellow, I’m excited to connect with others who are passionate about justice and social change, and to grow into a more effective leader for the communities I hope to serve, both in law school and beyond.”

Farm to Fork dinner returns Oct. 21 to celebrate local flavors and community

HAYS, Kan. — Fort Hays State fell to Pittsburg State by a score of 1-0 on Sunday (Sept. 28) at FHSU Soccer Stadium. The Gorillas moved to 6-1-1 overall, 1-0-1 in the MIAA, while the Tigers moved to 2-4-1 overall, 0-1-1 in the MIAA.

The Tigers couldn't solve the Gorillas offensively, unable to get a solid shot off during the contest. Pittsburg State took 17 shots and FHSU's Hadley Ostrander made six saves throughout the match.

Pittsburg State broke through in the 68th minute with a goal by Abby Hoffman, assisted by Ella Cazzavillan. She took a shot from the top of the box and snuck it into the right corner past the diving reach of Ostrander.

Up next, Fort Hays State travels to Central Missouri on Friday (Oct. 3) and then continues its road trip on Sunday (Oct. 5) at Emporia State.

On Sept. 27 at 10:58 p.m., the Hays Police Department responded to a domestic violence call in the 2200 block of Downing Street.

There is currently no threat to the public, according to officials.

HAYS, Kan. — Fort Hays State overcame a six-point halftime deficit, outscoring Missouri Western State 14-3 in the fourth quarter to secure a 31-23 victory over the Griffons in front of 8,211 Saturday night at Lewis Field.&nbsp;

After being held to 68 rushing yards through the first three quarters, Fort Hays State (3-2, 2-1 MIAA) exploded for 135 rushing yards in the fourth quarter, averaging 9.6 yards per carry in the final frame. Joshua Clark had four big runs of over 10 yards and Curtis Douglas had the biggest run of the night, a 59-yards scamper to the endzone with 5:56 to play to push their lead to eight.. The Griffons responded by scoring the next 10 points to take a 10-7 lead late in the first quarter. The Tigers regained the lead on a Douglas 6-yard run which capped an 11-play, 75-yard drive with 10:34 to play in the second.. The Griffons responded by scoring the final 10 points of the half which ended with a 44-yard hail mary touchdown pass with no time remaining to jump in front 20-14 at the break. 

The Tigers scored the only points of the third quarter on a 41-yard David Arriaga field goal to cap a 13-play drive. The Griffons responded with a field goal three plays in the fourth quarter but would not score again.

Douglas led the Tigers in rushing with 73 yards, followed by Clark with 70, all in the second half. Heavner added 43 yards with his legs, while throwing for 171. Ryan Allen led the Tigers in receiving yards with 49.

John Johnson was a force defensively for the Tigers with a career-high 16 tackles and a forced fumble. Michael Chavez also had a big night with 13 tackles. Jakolbi Wilson and Koa McIntyre both had sacks, while&nbsp; had a key interception in the first quarter that set up FHSU's first touchdown of the game.

The Griffons had 438 yards of total offense compared to 374 for the Tigers. FHSU produced 179 of its 374 total yards in the fourth quarter.

Fort Hays State heads on the road next week to Missouri Southern for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Saturday. The Lions are 2-2 overall and 0-2 in MIAA play after a 62-10 loss at Central Missouri.

🏈 Tigers run past Griffons late for Homecoming win

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team came up on the losing end of a match for the first time in three weeks and just the second time this season on Saturday, losing to Central Missouri 25-20, 25-20, 25-20. The Tigers are now 12-2 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the Jennies move to 8-3 on the year and 1-1 in MIAA action.

Central Missouri scored six of the first seven points to take an early lead, but the Tigers mounted a response with a kills by Gracie Rains, Peyton Bergschneider and Carsyn Cormaney to narrow the gap to 7-6. The Jennies bounced back to push the lead back to six before a pair of service aces from Kirsten Evans brought the Tigers within two at 18-16. The visitors regained the momentum from there, outscoring the Tigers 7-4 down the stretch to win 25-20.

The second set was close throughout, highlighted by 10 ties and four lead changes. Neither side led by more than two for much of the stanza, with FHSU leading as late as 14-13. The Jennies later scored three in a row to push their lead to four at 20-16, prompting a Tiger timeout. FHSU was unable to mount a comeback, again falling 25-20 to go down in the match 2-0.

Central Missouri never trailed in the third set, scoring the first three points and never looking back. After trailing by as many as six at 14-8, the Black and Gold scored seven of the next 10 to pull within two thanks three kills from Ella Goodwin. UCM bounced back after that rally, turning the 17-15 lead into a 25-20 win after outpacing the Tigers 8-5 down the stretch.

Caiya Stucky Reyes led the Tigers with 10 kills without an error on 17 attempts, achieving a hitting percentage of .588. Bergschneider contributed significantly with nine kills and added a team-best 12 digs. Goodwin finished with eight kills and one block assist, while Abrey Galt and Annie Eaton tied for the lead with 19 assists each. Evans matched Bergschneider with 12 digs while adding a pair of service aces. A trio of Jennies tied for a match-high 11 kills, including Rachel Ziesman, Kaelyn McDonald and Shaye Koski.

The Tigers will be on the road for the next two weeks starting Friday (Oct. 3) when FHSU takes on Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Mo. beginning at 6 p.m. FHSU's next home match is set for Friday, October 17 when the Tigers host second-ranked Central Oklahoma beginning at 6 p.m.

William Theobald Wierman, age 85 of Hays, Kansas died Wednesday, September 24, 2025 at Via Christi Village - Hays. He was born October 20, 1939 in McCracken, KS to William H. Wierman and Alvina G. (Bieker) Wierman. He graduated from St. Joseph’s Military Academy in 1958. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. During the course of his enlistment, he was stationed in Alaska and then finished his military service in the army reserves. He was united in marriage to Agnes Marie Schmidt on July 24, 1965 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays, KS.

Upon his discharge from the Army, he began work for Bieker Construction. He eventually started his own construction and remodeling business. His emphasis was on cabinets and finish carpentry. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the American Legion Post 173. He was also a Director for the Prairie Acres Improvement District for 39 years.

Survivors include his wife, Agnes Wierman of Hays, KS; daughters, Anne Schulte (Matthew) of Hays, KS and Amy Wierman of Lawrence, KS; a son, William G. Wierman (Tammy) of Hays, KS; grandchildren, Jenna Schulte (Rohn), Michael Schulte (Andreina), Emily Schulte, and Travis Wierman; great-grandchildren, Madelyn and Cora Brantley, Emma and Olivia Schulte and sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Stevenson and Clarice (Joe) Chism.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William H. &amp; Alvina Wierman; father and mother-in-law Lucius &amp; Alfreda Schmidt; siblings, William H. Wierman, Terry Wierman, Donald Wierman, and Sheila Sander; an infant son, Michael Wierman and a brother-in-law, Harry Stevenson.

GRAINFIELD — Taden Gottschalk set the tone early with a defensive touchdown, and Logan-Palco never looked back in a 50-0 shutout of Wheatland-Grinnell on Friday night in Week 4 of the Area Game of the Week.

The Trojans (3-1) scored in all three phases and leaned on their rushing attack to overwhelm the Thunderhawks (2-2) in both teams’ district opener.

Wheatland-Grinnell opened the game with a promising drive, but disaster struck when Gottschalk ripped the ball away from Jackson Foster on a screen pass and sprinted 44 yards for a score. After trading punts, Gottschalk struck again on offense, faking a handoff and racing 42 yards to make it 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter decided the game. Logan-Palco overcame two early miscues while Wheatland-Grinnell sputtered, running 23 plays for just 9 yards and committing two turnovers. Fort Hays State football will host Missouri Western for Homecoming on Saturday evening at Lewis Field in Hays. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The RV/No. 22 ranked Tigers enter the contest at 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA, while the Griffons enter at 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the MIAA.

The Tigers are coming off a tough loss to No. 18/10 ranked Pittsburg State last week in Pittsburg. FHSU held a 16-10 lead going into the fourth quarter, only to see PSU score 21 unanswered points in the final frame to win 31-16 on its home field. Both FHSU and PSU have played very tough schedules on paper to open the season and both are now 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA. PSU has played ranked teams in all four of its contests so far this year, while FHSU has played ranked teams three out of four games this year.

Missouri Western is coming off a loss in its MIAA opener against Central Missouri at home by a score of 34-26. In non-conference action, the Griffons fell to Augustana (S.D.) to open the season before defeating Missouri S&amp;T.

Fort Hays State defeated Missouri Western in Hays last year by a score of 30-16. That snapped a five-game losing streak in the series with the Griffons. Down 13-10 at halftime, the Tigers outscored the Griffons 13-0 in the third quarter to take a 23-13 lead and went on to win by 14.

There are only three teams remaining that are unbeaten in MIAA play this year. Northwest Missouri State and Central Oklahoma are both 2-0, while Central Missouri is 1-0. Seven conference teams have at least one loss in MIAA play.

Fort Hays State quarterback Caleb Heavner has 750 passing yards this season, while rushing for 137. Travis Dixon is the team leader in rushing yards with 167, while Donovan Hunt gives the Tigers three players with at least 100 rushing yards this season, currently with 106. Ryan Allen leads Tiger receivers at 153 yards for the season, while Ethan Hilliman has a team-high 14 catches.

On defense, John Johnson leads the Tigers with 33 tackles, while Gaven Haselhorst leads in sacks with 3.0. Michael Polley has two of the team's three interceptions for the season.

Kane Donovan heads the Missouri Western offense with 729 passing yards for the season. His top target has been Bryce Marcus III with 14 catches for 167 yards. Brandon Hall leads the ground game with 174 rushing yards, while Marrell Fountain has 142. Kienan Gaskin and Drew Scott lead the MWSU defense with 16 tackles each.

Hays High School's Homecoming parade made its way through downtown Hays on Friday.

The parade included this year’s Homecoming Court, the cheer team and marching band, along with current students and alumni dating back to the class of 1965.

As they prepared to enter their senior year at Fort Hays State University (FHSU), Honors College students Hazel Frans and Eric Moon had the chance to “test the waters before diving in” through competitive summer research internships funded by the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program.

Frans, a biology major and graduate of FHSU’s Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science (KAMS), spent her summer at Cornell University, where she participated in a research project on cold tolerance in maize. The long-term goal of the research, she explained, is to make corn more resilient to cold temperatures, expand the growing season, and prevent crop loss due to early spring freezes.

“Ultimately, after we did our initial research, our goal was to take the mutations or knockouts of the genes that we were studying and put them in maize and see how they reacted,” Frans said. “So, we were testing the waters before we dove in.”

Alongside her rigorous research schedule, Frans took time to explore the culture and architecture of New York state, from waterfalls to art museums to historic landmarks.

Frans has been actively engaged in research throughout her undergraduate years. She presented at the Kansas Idea Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (K-INBRE), received a grant to continue her research as a K-INBRE Star Trainee, and earned an Award of Excellence at the 2025 K-INBRE Symposium for her poster titled&nbsp;Impact of CRISPR-induced Mutations on Arabidopsis thaliana Gene APETALA3 Sites AP3-3 and AP3-5.

Dr. Tara Phelps-Durr, chair of FHSU’s Department of Biological Sciences, has mentored Frans and suggested that she apply for the summer REU program.

“Dr. Phelps-Durr really paved the way for me to apply to these internships,” Frans said. “I didn’t know they existed until she suggested I apply.”

“Hazel is an outstanding student, and it’s been a pleasure working with her,” Dr. Phelps-Durr said. “At FHSU, we are fortunate that we can provide students with undergraduate research experiences that prepare them for success beyond our campus.”

Moon, a mathematics major, completed his REU at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where he used simulation software to model traffic through work zones. His project explored 45 different scenarios based on an active work zone in Nebraska City.

His project explored 45 different scenarios based on an active work zone in Nebraska City.“I had never done anything like this before,” Moon said. “I don’t know if it’s enough to pull me away from pure theoretical applications, but it would be nice to do something like network analysis in the traffic engineering area on a more broad scale.”Despite entering the program with minimal experience, Moon quickly learned Python programming to conduct his research. The experience, he said, broadened his perspective and provided valuable preparation for graduate-level study.Moon has also pursued undergraduate research prior to his REU experience. He co-authored a paper on irreversible k-threshold processes in corona and double corona product graphs, posted on arXiv in 2025, and is now preparing it for journal submission.&nbsp;He presented this work at the Kansas Section of the Mathematical Association of America and FHSU’s Scholarly and Creative Activities Day (SACAD) and continues his research in graph theory under the mentorship of Dr. Soumya Bhoumik and Dr. Paul Flesher.&nbsp;&nbsp;Both Frans and Moon credit FHSU’s Honors College for fostering an environment that encouraged them to pursue these opportunities.“That’s the best part of being here - being part of that very successful network,” said Kevin Amidon, director of the Honors College. “Our colleagues at Fort Hays are very good at helping students tell the story of why they are going to be good contributors to a program. This is one of the great strengths here that other universities don’t offer because they are so much bigger.”Frans also credited KAMS for giving her a head start in research early in her academic career. “KAMS has always been very encouraging about going to conferences and presenting at SACAD,” she said. “Without the help of KAMS, I don’t believe I would have had this opportunity to do this research.”“Most students don’t have the opportunity to do research until they are earning their master’s,” added Suellyn Stenger, KAMS assistant director. “To be able to experience that as a junior in high school is a tremendous plus for our students.”Despite early concerns about potential NSF funding cuts in summer 2025, both internships went smoothly. For Frans, challenges to future scientific funding only underscore the resilience of the research community.“One thing about the sciences is that researchers are very persistent and very passionate,” she said. “We will overcome challenges and come out a lot stronger in the end.”Both students will graduate from FHSU in May 2026, and just weeks later, they plan to get married. They are currently exploring graduate schools where they can continue their studies in the same city.“There are a lot of opportunities we could take,” Frans said. “We will just have to see how it goes. It’s a unique situation.”
