Patricia Lea Feezor, age 81, died Saturday, June 15, 2024, at her home in Ulysses, Kansas. She was born July 27, 1942, in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado, the daughter of Russell and Mary Lou (Johnson) Ryser.

Pat grew up in Cheyenne Wells and graduated from Cheyenne Wells High School. She then furthered her education at Fort Hays State University where she obtained a bachelor’s degree. Pat taught school for one year in Hugoton after marrying Marvin Feezor on September 7, 1963, in Cheyenne Wells. They were happily married for 61 years. She was the office manager and co-owner with her husband, of Satanta Lumber Company, Sublette Furniture Store and in 1993 they moved to Ulysses and started Ulysses Building Supply. In her free time, Pat was an avid quilter, belonging to a quilting guild, an active member of the Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and enjoyed traveling. She and Marvin had the opportunity to travel to many countries and most of the United States. They built a cabin in New Mexico, where they made many fond memories. Pat’s greatest joy was her grandchildren and great-grandson, and she thoroughly enjoyed the time she spent with them. Pat was also a member of the Satanta Arts Council and St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Garden City.

Pat is survived by her husband, Marvin, of their home; son, Eric Feezor and wife, Holly, of Ulysses; daughter, Karla Hennebold and husband, Jon, of North Plains, Oregon; brothers, Randy Ryser and wife, Shirley, of McCook, Nebraska, and Kelly Ryser and wife, Karen, of Hays, Kansas; sister, Carmen Medina and husband, Jess, of Kyle, Texas; and her four adored grandchildren, Andrea Feezor, Nick Feezor, Ben Hennebold and Amelia Henelbold; great-grandson, Levi Hennebold; and nieces and nephews.

Pat is preceded in death by her parents, and sisters, Dana Gerstner and Vicki Kirby.

A memorial service will be Thursday, June 20, 2024, at 10:00 AM at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel in Ulysses with The Reverend Canon Cameron Randle officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery. Visitation, with family present, will be Wednesday, June 19, 2024, from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. This time of year combines and other types of farming equipment are making their way through fields, down highways, roads and local streets.

While harvesting a wheat field on Saturday, the driver of one of the four combines working the lot noticed a spark of flames between the wheat stalks. 

Quickly afterward, fire engulfed a farm machine in the 4400 block of East Meadow Road. Saline County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the field at 12:35 p.m., according to Sheriff Roger Soldan.

"They were cutting wheat when one of them noticed a fire in the wheat, so they went to cut around it, trying to isolate it, and the combine stalled," Soldan said. "Which resulted in the loss of the combine too."

"It may have been the machine that had an issue — they just didn't know at the time."

Soldan said the charred combine was a John Deere S670. With the fire spreading to about 80 acres of wheat, the total loss was more than&nbsp; $200,000. Soldan said no one was injured as a result of the fire.&nbsp;

The Kansas City Chiefs announced dates for training camp at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph.

This marks the 14th year of training camp at Missouri Western. All times and dates are subject to change. All practices will take place on the Mosaic Training Fields. There'll be 19 practices in all.

Open practices begin July 21 and conclude August 15. All training camp practices will be free of charge to the public, unless otherwise noted.

Training camp tickets must be reserved in advance at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.chiefs.com/trainingcamp/" target="_blank">www.chiefs.com/trainingcamp/</a>.

Due to expected interest and demand, attendance each day will be limited. Ticket reservations will begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 20 for Chiefs Season Ticket Members followed by the general public on Friday, June 21 at 10 a.m.

Fans can reserve a maximum of six tickets per practice, and can reserve tickets for a maximum of three separate practices.

Paid practice days will require advance payment to reserve tickets, while only Chiefs Season Ticket Members have the option to reserve tickets for the exclusive Season Ticket Member days.

Chiefs Tailgate Suites will be available for purchase in the North Endzone for groups of 10 or more. Missouri Western will charge a $5 parking fee per vehicle per day, with the exception of the two exclusive Chiefs Season Ticket Member days when parking is free. Fans are required to pre-purchase parking, and that can be done during the ticket reservation process.

Missouri Western will charge a $5&nbsp;admission fee&nbsp;on three different days – Sunday, July 21; Saturday, July 27 (Family Fun Day) and Sunday, August 4.

The Chiefs will host two free, exclusive Season Ticket Member days that are&nbsp;not&nbsp;open to the public – Monday, July 22 and Wednesday, August 7. Ambassador Day will take place on Monday, July 29 and Military Appreciation Day will be Thursday, August 15. Team autograph sessions are scheduled to take place July 21, July 22, July 27, August 4 and August 7.

Weather and field conditions are evaluated daily. All dates and times are subject to change. If practice is moved indoors due to&nbsp; weather, it will be closed to the general public. Fans will be notified by email and/or text message as soon as a decision is made.

🏈 Chiefs announce 2024 training camp schedule

Hays High School claimed a pair of Kansas State High School Clay Target League state titles over this past week.

Hays won the Class 1A Skeet Team Overall competition with a team total of 435. Their score was 46 better than second place. Logan Schmidt was the team's high gun with a 91. Daniel Maier scored a 90. Cole McDonough, Jaxon Stoffel and Gunner Weigel rounded out the team score.

Schmidt's 91 was good enough for a second place tie in the individual placings. Maier tied for fourth, McDonough tied for sixth with an 88 and Stoffel tied for eighth with an 86. Weigel finished just outside the top ten in a tie for eleventh with an 80.

Hays High also claimed the 2A Trap Shooting Novice title with a score of 361. LaCrosse finished second at 333. Brandon Dague was the high gun for the team with an 83. Callie Bets, Makayla Lewallen, Jack McMurtrie, and Eleanor Stoffel rounded out the scoring. Lewallen was second on the team and the top female high gun with a 72.

Dague was the competition's top novice male. 

The junior varsity shot a 384 and placed 14th. The varsity team finished eighth with a 472. 

 Kaeilin Maier was the junior varsity's female high gun and had the highest team score with an 86. Dakota Schmidt was the team's male high gun at 84. The varsity team was led by Jaxon Stoffel with a 97. Mariella Dreiling was the top female gun at 87.

Maier placed second junior varsity female scores. Stoffel tied for 11th in the varsity male high gun scores.

Area shooters that finished in the top three included&nbsp;Trego's Quintin Walt, who shot a perfect 100 and was the varsity male champion and was the overall state champion. Second, third and fourth place each missed just one shot for a 99.

Trego's Karlie Long finished third in the female novice division with a 79. Denton Pfannenstiel of LaCrosse was third in the male novice division on an 80 score. Sarah Clements of Trego shot 86 and was third in the female junior varsity division.&nbsp;

Area lawmakers are headed back to Topeka this week for a
special legislative session to once again, take up tax policy, after the
governor vetoed prior attempts to reach an agreement on a tax-cutting deal, but
a deal announced late last week could signal a quick session.

Lawmakers in Kansas will return Tuesday, June 18 for the
special session. The special session comes after Democratic Governor Laura
Kelly vetoed three prior tax plans.

Her final veto came in May after lawmakers reached an
agreement in the final hours of the legislative session. 

In a statement Kelly said the legislature, “played political
games with reckless tax policies,” when it did not follow her recommendations.

The measure passed both the house and the senate with
overwhelming bipartisan support.

Hays Representative Barb Wasinger, R-Hays, 111th
District, is a member of the House Taxation Committee is scheduled to be back
in Topeka Monday to begin work ahead of the special session. 

Wasinger, like many Republican lawmakers expressed
frustration with the need for a special session. 

“In the last set of vetoes, she vetoed her own tax plans and
she knew if she vetoed the last one, she was going to cost Kansas even more
money to come back (for a special session),” Wasinger said. “I just sometimes think
that political people do not use good common sense and they don’t think about
the people they are affecting when they do things like this.”

Rep. Ken Rahjes, R-Agra, 110th district also voiced his
disappointment with the need for a special session that is expected to cost
taxpayers approximately $84,000 per day.

“I think it was avoidable. It's disappointing that we have
to do this,” Rahjes said. “The legislature, in a bipartisan fashion, had
something and the governor decided to play games and so here we are.”

Late Thursday Kelly announced that she and Republican
leadership in the legislature had reached an agreement on a plan before
Tuesday’ session. 

Kelly said in a statement, “Legislative leadership and I
have come to a consensus on a tax relief package that will be presented to the
House and Senate during the upcoming special session.”

Senate President Ty Masterson of Andover and House Speaker
Dan Hawkins of Wichita said in a joint statement, “It simplifies the tax code
into two brackets, lowers rates, includes substantial exemptions to help
lower-income Kansans, reduces statewide property taxes and repeals the state
tax on Social Security.”

Both the house and senate must still approve the latest tax
measure before it can go to the governor. Kelly has said she would sign the
latest bill.

Rahjes said he believes it important to get something of
substance done because the stat does currently have a surplus and said high
inflation and other economic factors continue to weigh on Kansans.

“A week ago, Caterpillar said they're going to be really
shuttering their facility in Wamego and Wamego is one of the bright spots in
the state of Kansas, that people continue to grow,” Rahjes said. “But 400 jobs
in that in that area, is tremendous.”

Rahjes said he also planned to be in Topeka Monday and has
volunteered to be on the taxation committee now that there is an opening.

He added, “To worry about these other things and playing
games to try to gain a seat or two in the legislature, that is not what Kansans
want. Kansas, is used to being pragmatic, and getting solutions that are good
for Kansans.”

Wasinger said she is focused on easing the tax burden on
many groups of Kansans. 

“I want to give tax relief to Kansans,” Wasinger said. “I
want to stop taxing our seniors, so they leave the state and take their money
other places, I want them to stay in Kansas, I want them to have the same tax
advantages that other states around us have done.”

Wasinger added, “I want our veterans, particularly our
disabled veterans to have some tax relief, so they can live in their homes without
concern. There's so much we need to do for our taxpayers, that is just not
getting done.”

Rahjes said he believes that many lawmakers agree with
Wasinger and himself on the need for relief for seniors and veterans but they
also expressed the need top find a way to give taxpayers property tax relief.

“People are always saying, Ken we need property tax relief
on our homes and for everything else, especially knowing that there's a surplus
there that can be used for that relief,” Rahles said. “So that to me is the
priority.”

According to reports from the Associate Press, the deal
announced last week would save Kansas taxpayers $1.2 billion over the next
three years.

It would also move Kansas to a two income tax rate system
and cut property taxes by at least $230 million more over the next three years.

OMAHA - Dylan Dreiling went 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored as Tennessee improved to 2-0 at the Men's College World Series with a 6-1 victory over North Carolina Sunday evening at Charles Schwab Field.

Dreiling, who was the Kansas 5A Player of the year at Hays High in 2022, is now 5-for-8 in the Volunteers first two games of the MCWS.

⚾ Larks win fourth straight, blow out Roughriders

FINNEY COUNTY —One person was injured after a home explosion in Garden City.

Just after 7p.m. on Saturday, the Garden City Fire Department was dispatched to the report of an explosion at 802 West Fair Street, Garden City, according to a media release.

Upon arrival, fire personnel found one home that had significant damage due to an explosion with a large debris field surrounding the site. One victim was treated and transported by Finney County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to St. Catherine Hospital.

 Black Hills Energy was dispatched to the scene to shut off the gas supply in the affected area, and the City of Garden City Electric department was dispatched due to a downed power line. 

The Kansas State Fire Marshal’s office was notified of the explosion and has been requested to assist with the investigation. No damage estimates are known at this time.

While the investigation is being completed, Fair Street is closed between 9th Street and 11th Street, and 10th Street will be closed between Fair and Hamline Streets.

One person hospitalized after home explosion in SW Kansas 

After returning last year from a brief break, this weekend's
Ellis Riverfest is set to be bigger than ever, and it will surely offer
something for everyone.

Saturday’s event starts at 8 a.m., and the rest of the
events start at 11 a.m. at Chrysler Park at 10th and Dorrance in
Ellis. 

Justin Whyte, the Riverfest president, said they are
excited to return for the second year in a row and that the event continues to
grow.

"It's just a good way for the community to get out and do
things," Whyte said. "Some of the same things that you would see at the Ellis
County Fair will be here for kids to do. It is absolutely free to enter the
park."

There are going to be a number of things for the kids, Whyte said. 

That includes obstacle courses, laser tag, a dunk tank and cardboard boat races. 

“A lot of those activities and our kids' games are run by our
youth, whether that be through the school with sports teams or things of that
nature.

He said the money goes back to those
programs.

Whyte said that in the lead-up to this year’s event, the kids in
the community have been helping set up the event and prepare the park for it.

"As a parent of high schoolers, that is one of those things
that they're always fundraising, and this gives them another opportunity to do
that," Whyte said.

The day isn’t just for kids. Whyte said they have a
number of things to offer for all ages.

"We have DJs throughout the day this year. We're bringing
in a band, ICT Doubletap from Wichita, and they do '90s alternative
music," Whyte said. "We will have shopping vendors. We will have food vendors
to include some food trucks, not only local to the Ellis County area but some
from outside of that area."

There is also a car show and shine. Whyte said they
expect to have a lot of cars and trucks for people to check out. For the kids, they will have the “Touch-a-Truck” event. There kids will be able to interact
with police, fire and EMS personnel and their vehicles.

The event will wind down with a free community barbecue sponsored by the City of Ellis for the first 400 people from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Whyte confirmed they will continue to host the annual event
on the third Saturday in June and said they are working to make it bigger and
better each year.

“I just hope that everybody comes out (and) makes this event
big,” Whyte said. “Show your support to not only our kids that are working
games and other activities, but we want to keep this, this event going.” 

He also encourages people to reach out if they have ideas
for the future. 

"If people have ideas or things that they would like to see potentially
occur within Riverfest, search out any of our committee," Whyte said. "Our
committee will be in shirts that say Ellis Riverfest on the front, and the
back, it says committee. Find one of us, and let us know those ideas."

Ellis Riverfest gets underway today

OMAHA - Former Hays High School standout Dylan Dreiling delivered a game-winning, two-out single to left field to give Tennessee a 12-11 comeback win over Florida State in the opening round of the Men's College World Series.

Dreiling's heroics capped a four-run bottom of the ninth for the top-seeded Volunteers.&nbsp;

Dreiling, who was named to the All-Southeast Region Second Team earlier this week, finished the game 4-for-6 with 3 RBIs.

The Volunteers will face North Carolina Sunday at 6 p.m.

 Social media posts about these incidents also began circulating at the same time. A short time later, police took a person of interest in these incidents into custody.&nbsp; The suspect's name has not been released.

Anyone who may have  witnessed these or similar incidents, is asked to reach out to detectives immediately to assist in their investigation. Please, call Detective D. Hopkins with KCKPD at 913-573-6012. All tips are kept confidential.

Man was exposing himself in public near Kan. youth sports complex

A Salina woman was scammed out of $7,400 in a Bitcoin phone scam on Thursday.

The victim, a 75-year-old Salina woman living in the 2000 block of Raymond Avenue, received a phone call from an individual claiming to be "James Williams" from the Saline County Sheriff's "Department." The caller informed her that she had failed to appear for jury duty and was in contempt of court on both state and federal levels.

"The caller told her that she had to make a full payment using Bitcoin to have the charges dropped," said SPD Lt. David Villanueva. "She went to her bank and got $7,400 in cash."

Villanueva said the victim then went to a Bitcoin machine where the caller gave her codes to put in the machine. The scammer provided her with specific codes to input into the machine, directing the payment to their account instead of to a legitimate one. The victim followed the caller's instructions, unaware she was being deceived.

The woman went to the Salina Police Department, where she realized the phone caller was scamming her.

"We reminded her, like we remind the public, that the sheriff's 'department' does not take payment over Bitcoin over the phone or anything," Villanueva said. "Nor would they ever call somebody and say you missed your jury duty and need to pay $7,400."

Villanueva said no, James Williams works at the Saline County Sheriff's Office.

"It is the Sheriff's Office, not the Sheriff's Department," Villanueva said. "If somebody calls you and says, 'Hey, you owe this or whatever.' Call the Sheriff's Office or Police Department themselves and say, 'Hey, is this true?' and you'll probably find out it's not."

The investigation is ongoing, but SPD acknowledges that recovering the funds will be difficult.

Hays ties record high Thursday

The ordinance allowing UTVs to be driven on Hays city streets was amended by the Hays City Commission Thursday night to be more consistent with the new golf cart ordinance.

The update repeals existing registration, licensing, inspection and fee requirements for UTVs.

Last week, Police Chief Don Scheibler said the police department was "an enforcement agency, not an inspection agency."

"The UTVs still must have safety equipment, and drivers must follow the rules of the road," Scheibler said during an earlier work session. He noted that, to date, no tickets had been issued to UTV drivers.

By state law, vehicles are not allowed on state or federal highways, including Vine Street.

Prior to the start of the meeting, Shaun Musil, mayor, read and signed a proclamation recognizing June as Pride Month in Hays.

A public hearing, with no comment, was conducted to establish a community improvement district for Vernie's Trux-N-Equip at 4945 General Hays Road.

The truck repair and sales shop plans to relocate from its current location near Home Depot to the site of the former Hays Livestock sales barn.

Commissioners approved an ordinance establishing the community improvement district and levying a 2% sales tax within it, as well as approval of the development agreement.

"They're really improving that area," said Sandy Jacobs, vice-mayor.

Bids were approved with Mayor Specialty Services, Goddard, for rehabilitating up to 102 manholes and with&nbsp;CC Steel, LLC, Fargo, North Dakota, for light cleaning and video inspection of 22 miles of sewer lines. Both awards were not to exceed the $150,000 budgets.&nbsp;

Bids from Lewis Ford of Hays for four pickups for the public works and water resources departments, totaling $227,740, were also approved.&nbsp;

The current facility, 1100 Fort, has been sold to the city of Hays and will be remodeled into a new police station/municipal courthouse.Other portions of the land at 27th and Main are planned for a potential shopping center and a residential multi-family of apartments or townhouses.&nbsp;The second public hearing will be for the preliminary and final planned development of the new housing area, The Grove, north of HaysMed on Canterbury Drive.&nbsp;&nbsp;Also on the June 17 agenda are potential actions on the preliminary and final plats of 27th and Main Street Addition, Depot Addition at 10th and Walnut, and the Exit 161 Addition on Commerce Parkway.Commissioners will also consider a&nbsp;rezoning request from general commercial to light industrial for East 41st St., 1st Addition, Lot 2, and Block 1, Vernie’s Addition.The agenda is available <a href="https://www.haysusa.com/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Agenda/_06172024-1486">here</a>.
