Former Hays High and Tennessee Volunteer standout Dylan Dreiling
was selected in the second round of the MLB Draft Sunday by the Texas Rangers.

Dreiling was the 65th overall pick, the final
pick of the second round.

Dreiling spent much of the first day of the MLB draft with
his family and friends, watching the first round and almost the entire second
round go by before his name was called just before 10 p.m. central time.

But when his name was called, he was excited.

"It means a lot. I'm excited to go to the Rangers," Dreiling
said. "Obviously, it's a good program, and (they) won a World Series last year,
so that's pretty big. I'm excited to get down there and get to work."

Dreiling said he had been talking with representatives from the Rangers organization quite a bit over the last couple of days leading up to the
draft.

"Not really anything baseball-wise, just about the person I
am," Dreiling said. "I didn't know that they were going to pick me or that I
was even in their draft considerations, but it was cool to experience that."

This is not the first go-around for Dreiling in the draft
process. Going into his senior season at Hays High, Dreiling was among a number
of high school standouts who found themselves with a chance to be drafted
straight out of high school. 

However, Dreiling suffered a hamstring injury early in the season. Despite the injury, he was named the Kansas 5A player of the year. However, he did not hear his name called in the 2022 MLB draft, and he headed to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

After splitting time as a freshman for the Volunteers, Dreiling
cemented his role in the starting lineup this past season in Knoxville, finishing
with a .341 average with 23 homeruns and a team-best 75 RBIs while being named
to the first-team All-SEC.

But it was what Dreiling did on the way to the Volunteers
winning the College World Series title in Omaha that earned him the title of “Mr.
Clutch.”

In the six CWS games, Dreiling batted .541 with 11 RBIs and
three homeruns. All three of those homeruns came in the CWS finals against
Texas A&amp;M. He is the first player to ever accomplish that feat. He was
named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2024 College World Series.

Dreiling said his ascent to stardom after the injury and his freshman season showed his drive to win.

"It shows that I'm a hard worker and that I'm willing to do
whatever to get better," Dreiling said. "I'm a winner. I want to win as bad as
anybody."

For Dreiling, the last few weeks have been “crazy.”

After helping to lead the Volunteers to the program's first CWS
Championship in Omaha, he returned to Hays and said he had been overwhelmed by
the community's support.

"The support from the community was unreal since I've been
home, and it's just been really cool to see," Dreiling said.

Dreiling was honored Saturday at Larks Park during the team's matchup with the Fort Collins Foxes. A proclamation from the Hays mayor declared Sunday, July 14, Dylan Dreiling Day in the city.

Dreiling was one of four Tennessee Volunteers taken in the first
two rounds of the MLB, a new program record.

“It’s the best place to develop in college baseball, hands
down,” Dreiling said. “We just have so many coaches that help developmentally
and just keep you on the right path.”

Dylan added, “I looked at it, the draft, as a high schooler, and going to Tennessee was the best decision I ever made.”

⚾ Rangers pick former Hays High standout Dreiling in MLB draft

BOSTON (AP) — Rafael Devers hit a two-run homer that broke a seat deep in right field at Fenway Park, Dominic Smith also had a two-run shot and the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 5-4 on Sunday to take the series.

The Red Sox won their second straight after losing the opener. Boston improved to a major league-best 9-3 in July and is 20-8 since June 12.

All-Star Devers sent a first-inning slider from Brady Singer (5-6) with an estimated exit velocity of 114.7 mph a projected 439 feet, crashing into the top of a seat and loosening up the top support. The Red Sox posted a “&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/RedSox/status/1812556309239369974">Fenway Facilities Incident Report</a>&nbsp;” that had a picture of the broken red seat on their social media sites.

Adam Frazier opened the game with a homer into the Royals’ bullpen and All-Star Salvador Perez, who was selected for his ninth Midsummer Classic, added a solo shot into the Green Monster seats for Kansas City.

First-time All-Star Jarren Duran had four hits for the Red Sox, who improved to a majors’ best 15-1 on Sundays. Boston enters the All-Star break surprisingly 4 ½ games out of first in the AL East after finishing in the basement three of the last four years.

Brayan Bello (10-5) overcame his struggles at home, going 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs and seven hits. He had posted a 6.55 ERA in his seven starts in Fenway.

Kenley Jansen got the final six outs, striking out three, for his 19th save, the 439th of his career. He gave up a run in the ninth but got Nick Loftin to ground out with a runner on second to end it.

Smith’s shot went an estimated 431 feet, traveling over Boston’s bullpen to make it 4-1 in the second. He added a key RBI single that made it 5-3 in the seventh.

Singer had allowed just one run in each of his previous four starts but was tagged for four runs and eight hits in 2 2/3 innings.

The Royals go into the break with 52 victories, three off the most before the All-Star Game in team history behind the 1973 club.

Royals: OF MJ Melendez limped out of the game with a sprained left ankle after beating out a fielder’s choice grounder that drove in a run in the fourth. … C Perez was the DH for the second straight game after leaving Friday’s early due to cramping.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The 20-year-old man&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-vp-vance-rubio-7c7ba6b99b5f38d2d840ed95b2fdc3e5">who tried to assassinate</a>&nbsp;former President Donald Trump first came to law enforcement’s attention at Saturday's rally when spectators noticed him acting strangely outside the campaign event. The tip sparked a frantic search but officers were unable to find him before he managed to get on a roof, where he opened fire.

In the wake of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/live/election-biden-trump-campaign-updates-07-13-2024">the shooting</a>&nbsp;that killed one spectator, investigators were hunting for any clues about what may have drove Thomas Matthew Crooks, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, to carry out the shocking attack. The FBI said they were investigating it as a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-rally-assassination-attempt-db24c5bfbbe7d09fa2437c3c836bb434">potential act of domestic terrorism</a>, but the absence of a clear ideological motive by the man shot dead by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/secret-service-trump-rally-4e3415b1461f5acefbc8e1fadad0375b">Secret Service</a>&nbsp;led conspiracy theories to flourish.

“I urge everyone — everyone, please, don’t make assumptions about his motives or his affiliations," President Joe Biden&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-trump-shooting-election-2024-704592d02c3421a767112f0bf6d25eb9">said in remarks Sunday from the White House</a>. “Let the FBI do their job, and their partner agencies do their job. I’ve instructed that this investigation be thorough and swift.”

The FBI said it believes Crooks, who had bomb-making materials in the car he drove to the rally, acted alone. Investigators have found no threatening comments on social media accounts or ideological positions that could help explain what led him to target Trump before&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/video/pennsylvania-butler-national-national-decb43c08e0f497bb4ce70c2fbd625b5">Secret Service rushed</a>&nbsp;the presumptive Republican presidential nominee off the stage, his face smeared with blood.

Trump said on social media the upper part of his right ear was pierced in the shooting, but advisers said he was “great spirits" ahead of his arrival Sunday in Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention. Two spectators were critically injured, while a former fire chief from the area, Corey Comperatore was killed. Pennsylvania's governor said&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-rally-victim-fire-chief-11e1aa65e6e45584f49577686d38766e">Comperatore, 50, died a hero</a>&nbsp;by diving onto his family to protect them.

Relatives of Crooks didn’t respond to numerous messages from The Associated Press. His father, Matthew Crooks,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/14/us/trump-shooting-thomas-matthew-crooks-intl-hnk/index.html">told CNN late Saturday</a>&nbsp;that he was trying to figure out “what the hell is going on” but wouldn’t speak about his son until after he talked to law enforcement. An FBI official told reporters that Crooks' family is cooperating with investigators.

Several rallygoers reported to local officers that Crooks was acting suspiciously and pacing near the magnetometers, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation. Officers were then told Crooks was climbing a ladder, the official said. Officers searched for him but were unable to find him before he made it to the roof, the official added.

Butler County Sheriff Michael Slupe told the AP that a local officer climbed to the roof and encountered Crooks, who saw the officer and turned toward him just before the officer dropped down to safety. Slupe said the officer couldn’t have wielded his own gun under the circumstances. The officer retreated down the ladder, and Crooks quickly took a shot toward Trump, and that’s when Secret Service snipers shot him, according to two officials who spoke to AP on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

FBI officials said Sunday that they were combing Crooks' background and social media activities while working to get access to his phone. The chatting app Discord, a social media platform popular with people playing online games, said Crooks appears to have had an account but used it rarely and not in the last several months. There's no evidence he used his account to promote violence or discuss his political views, a Discord spokesperson said.

Crooks’ political leanings were not immediately clear. Records show Crooks was registered as a Republican voter in Pennsylvania, but federal campaign finance reports also show he gave $15 to a progressive political action committee on Jan. 20, 2021, the day Biden was sworn into office.

Crooks graduated from Bethel Park High School in 2022. In a video of the school’s graduation ceremony posted online, Crooks can be seen crossing the stage to receive his diploma, appearing slight of build and wearing glasses. The school district said it will cooperate fully with investigators. His senior year, Crooks was among several students given an award for math and science, according to a&nbsp;<a href="https://triblive.com/local/awards-and-recognition-program-honors-bethel-park-graduates/">Tribune-Review</a>&nbsp;story at the time.

Crooks tried out for the school's rifle team but was turned away because he was a bad shooter, said Frederick Mach, a current captain of the team who was a few years behind Crooks at the school.

Jason Kohler, who said he attended the same high school but did not share any classes with Crooks, said Crooks was bullied at school and sat alone at lunch time. Other students mocked him for the clothes he wore, which included hunting outfits, Kohler said.

“He was bullied almost every day,” Kohler told reporters. “He was just a outcast, and you know how kids are nowadays.”

Crooks worked at a nursing home as a dietary aide, a job that generally involves food preparation. Marcie Grimm, the administrator of Bethel Park Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation, said in a statement she was “shocked and saddened to learn of his involvement.” Grimm added that Crooks had a clean background check when he was hired.

A blockade had been set up Sunday preventing traffic near Crooks’ house, which is in an enclave of modest brick houses in the hills outside Pittsburgh and about an hour's drive from the site of the Trump rally. Police cars were stationed at an intersection near the house and officers were seen walking through the neighborhood.

Crooks used an AR-style rifle, which authorities said they believe was purchased by his father. Kevin Rojek, FBI special agent in charge in Pittsburgh, said that investigators do not yet know if he took the gun without his father's permission.

A video posted to social media and geolocated by AP shows Crooks wearing a gray t-shirt with a black American flag on the right arm lying motionless on the roof of a manufacturing plant just north of the Butler Farm Show grounds where Trump’s rally was held.

The roof where Crooks lay was less than 150 meters (164 yards) from where Trump was speaking, a distance from which a decent marksman could reasonably hit a human-sized target. That is a distance at which U.S. Army recruits must hit a scaled human-sized silhouette to qualify with the M-16 rifle.

Images of Crooks’ body reviewed by AP show he appears to have been wearing a T-shirt from Demolition Ranch,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/@DemolitionRanch/videos">a popular YouTube channel</a>&nbsp;that regularly posts videos of its creator firing off handguns and assault rifles at targets that include human mannequins.

Matt Carriker, the Texas-based creator of Demolition Ranch, did not respond to a phone message or email on Sunday, but posted a photo of Crooks' bloody corpse wearing his brand's T-shirt on social media with the comment “What the hell.”

What police know about man who tried to assassinate Donald Trump

A Fort Hays State University student has received a grant from the Heartland Community to paint a mural depicting native grasses, wildflowers and insects in downtown Hays.

The mural will be on the east side of the Andre Tax and Accounting building, 117 E. 10th St. Once it is complete, you should be able to view it from the downtown pavilion.

PJ Stauffer, 23, is a graduate student in art at FHSU, studying drawing.

Stauffer was a member of the Creative Arts Society at FHSU during his undergraduate studies. The group had the idea for a mural of native grasses, but the project never got off the ground because of the pandemic.

Stauffer is from a rural area of Glen Elder. He grew up on a farm and is familiar with native prairie scapes.

"I have always liked bugs and creatures and stuff, and flowers are easy for me to do because I find them beautiful," Stauffer said.

Stauffer painted three murals at his high school in Beloit. Two were landscapes, and one was an abstract painting with a musical theme.

The mural will be interactive. Visitors will be able to scan a QR code to see a list of insects, flowers and grasses depicted in it.

The mural will depict native grasses such as windmill grass, bluestem, Indian grass, switchgrass and side oats.

Some of the flowers will include bundle flower, coreopsis, Maximilian sunflower and cornflower.

Some insects will include silk moths, velvet ants, blacktail field cricket, mantis, bumblebees, rolly pollies,  parasitic wasps, tiger beetles and orb weavers.&nbsp;

"A lot of people say Kansas is just a lot of dead grass," Stauffer said. "It's not dead. There's a lot of colors out there, actually."

"It really bothers me that people say Kansas is ugly," he said.

He said he wanted to magnify the plants and insects so people would feel they were the same size as the landscape and insects.

"It's stuff that's very small, and we tend to overlook it, but when it's the same size as you, I think that's cool," Stauffer said.

He worked with the FHSU biology department to identify the wildlife, flora and fauna to be included in the mural.

"I came forward with a list of everything I wanted to put in it, and some are domestic. I learned the difference between things that grow here now very well because we brought them here versus stuff that has been here since before we got here," Stauffer said.

The Werth College of Science, Technology and Mathematics at FHSU and the building owner also contributed funds to the project.

Stauffer said he hopes to start on the mural as soon as possible and complete the painting by mid-August.

Stauffer will continue to work on his graduate degree at FHSU in the fall. In addition to continuing to create art, he hopes to teach when he finishes graduate school.

FHSU to create interactive prairie mural in downtown Hays

HAYS – The Hays Larks dropped a 15-10 shootout&nbsp; with the
Kansas Cannons in a non-league contest Sunday at Larks Park. 

The Cannons struck early scoring four times in the third and
fourth innings and they added two more in the fifth for a 10-0 lead through five
innings.

The Larks finally broke on to the scoreboard scoring four
runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Kaleb Duncan walked to lead off the inning for the Larks and
then stole second and third base before scoring on a fielder’s choice making it
10-1 Cannons.

The Larks added runs in the inning on a Tabor Stokes single,
Thomas Lyssy ground out and a based ball as they cut the deficit to 10-4.

The Cannons proceeded to answer with five runs in to the top
the seventh inning and led at that point 15-4.

Will Carpenter hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the
inning for Hays cutting the Cannons lead to 15-6.

Hays added four more in the bottom of the eighth inning. 

Duncan doubled with the bases loaded, driving in three and
then Houston Russell tripled in the next at bat making it 15-10 but Hays could
get no closer.

Trent Baker suffered the loss on the mound for the Larks. He
allowed four runs, three earned, on two hits with three walks and two
strikeouts in two innings.

Duncan drove in three runs and doubled twice. Carpenter
homered and drive in two runs. Houston Russell also drove in a pair of runs.

The Larks are 22-8 and 17-6 in RMBL play.

They have Monday off before beginning a two-game series in
Liberal on Tuesday with the Bee Jays.

Late Sunday morning Former first lady Melania Trump released a letter following the assassination attempt on Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

In a post on his social media network, former President Donald Trump also thanked “everyone for your thoughts and prayers yesterday, as it was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening.”

“We will FEAR NOT, but instead remain resilient in our Faith and Defiant in the face of Wickedness,” he said.

Trump also said, “Our love goes out to the other victims and their families” and he said he’s praying “for the recovery of those who were wounded, and hold in our hearts the memory of the citizen who was so horribly killed.”

“In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United, and show our True Character as Americans, remaining Strong and Determined, and not allowing Evil to Win,” he adds.

“I truly love our Country, and love you all, and look forward to speaking to our Great Nation this week from Wisconsin,” he said in his Sunday morning social media post.&nbsp;&nbsp;The convention kicks off Monday in Milwaukee.

An online fundraiser for victims of the Trump rally shooting has raised more than $1 million.

The fund created by Trump campaign officials is “a place for donations to the supporters and families wounded or killed” in Saturday’s assassination attempt."

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden warned Sunday of the risks of political violence in the U.S. after Saturday’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-rally-assassination-attempt-db24c5bfbbe7d09fa2437c3c836bb434">attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump</a>, saying, “It's time to cool it down.”

In a prime-time national address from the Oval Office, Biden said political passions can run high but “we must never descend into violence.” The president acknowledged the passions of an election year, and that he and Republicans offer different policy visions, but implored Americans to “recommit” to resolving their differences peacefully.

“There is no place in America for this kind of violence — for any violence. Ever. Period. No exception. We can’t allow this violence to be normalized," Biden said.

Biden spoke for six minutes in his third address to the nation since Saturday evening's attack by a shooter that killed one rallygoer and seriously injured two more. His warning came hours after FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate said agents have seen increasingly violent rhetoric online since the attack at the Trump rally.

The president and his team had been grappling with how to calibrate the path forward after the weekend attack on the very person Biden is trying to defeat in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/election-2024">November’s election</a>.

The president noted that the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-rnc-what-to-expect-702139084873df3d633ee19d1b82e5f0">Republican National Convention</a>&nbsp;was opening in Milwaukee on Monday, while he himself would be returning to the reelection campaign trail after pausing his schedule to manage the immediate response to the shooting. Biden said he had “no doubt” that Republicans will “criticize my record and offer their own vision for this country" and promised to campaign laying out his own ideas, but said those disagreements must remain peaceful.

“We can do this,” Biden pleaded, saying the nation was founded on a democracy that gave reason and balance a chance to prevail over brute force. “American democracy — where arguments are made in good faith. American democracy — where the rule of law is respected. Where decency, dignity, fair play aren’t just quaint notions, they’re living, breathing realities.”

Biden also warned that political tensions were being flamed by a balkanized media environment and exploited by American enemies.

“Here in America we need to get out of our silos, where we only listen to those with whom we agree, where misinformation is rampant, where foreign actors fan the flames of our division to shape the outcomes consistent with their interests, not ours,” Biden said.

Earlier Sunday he had been briefed in the White House Situation Room and condemned the attempted assassination of his predecessor,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Trump</a>, as “contrary to everything we stand for as a nation.” He said he was ordering an independent security review of how such an attack could have happened.

The president said he has also directed the U.S. Secret Service to review all security measures for the RNC. Hours later, Audrey Gibson-Cicchino, the Secret Service’s coordinator for the convention, said the weekend attack against Trump did not prompt any changes to the agency's security plan for the event and officials “are fully prepared.”

Biden called for the country to “unite as one nation,” promised a “thorough and swift” review and asked the public not to “make assumptions” about the shooter’s motives or affiliations.

The president said he and first lady Jill Biden were praying for the family of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-rally-victim-fire-chief-11e1aa65e6e45584f49577686d38766e">Corey Comperatore</a>, a former fire chief who was shot and killed during the Trump rally Saturday night in Butler, Pennsylvania.

“He was protecting his family from the bullets," Biden said. "God love him.”

The president also said he'd had a “short but good conversation” with Trump in the hours after the shootings and said he was “sincerely grateful” that the former president is “doing well and recovering.”

Trump, who has called for national resilience since the shooting, posted on his social media account after Biden's remarks, “UNITE AMERICA!”

Biden, who has set out to brand Trump as a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-biden-democracy-election-2024-f2f824f056ae9f81f4e688fe590f41b4">dire threat to democracy</a>&nbsp;and the nation’s very founding principles, put a temporary pause on such political messaging. Shortly after Saturday night's attack, Biden’s reelection campaign froze “all outbound communications” and was working to pull down its television ads.

The president also postponed a planned trip to Texas on Monday, where he was to speak on the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act at the Lyndon B. Johnson presidential library. An NBC News interview between Biden and anchor Lester Holt will now occur at the White House, instead of in Texas, as initially planned.

Biden's campaign said that, after the NBC interview airs on Monday night, it and the Democratic National Committee “will continue drawing the contrast” with Trump over the course of the GOP convention — even though it remains unclear when ads would resume.

Biden also still plans to make a planned trip to Las Vegas, which will include a campaign event Wednesday. Vice President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/kamala-harris">Kamala Harris</a>&nbsp;postponed her planned campaign trip to Florida on Tuesday, where she had been set to meet with Republican women.

Trump, meanwhile, arrived Sunday evening in Milwaukee for the Republican convention, where criticism of Biden and the Democrats is sure to be searing.

The weekend developments were only the latest upheaval in a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-2024-lawmakers-debate-2c426f98063ab30143a7675cba10a5b4">campaign that has been extraordinarily topsy-turvy in recent weeks</a>.

Biden’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bidentrumppresidentialdebate-0e7577e9a354a69f50675494fea54ca9">shaky debate performance</a>&nbsp;on June 27 so spooked his own party that some top surrogates and donors turned on him, and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-democrats-president-trump-d5fb136a643edb020745336ff9709923">nearly 20 Democratic members of Congress</a>&nbsp;called on the president to leave the race outright. Facing mounting questions about whether he was fit for a second term, Biden and his top advisers have been scrambling to salvage his campaign by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-campaigning-pennsylvania-democratic-doubts-election-77b050b1c5c39aec2ef633281d082566">adding events</a>&nbsp;around the country and more aggressively criticizing Trump.

Saturday's attack upended — at least for now — that counteroffensive on the cusp of the Republican convention.

The campaign hoped that Sunday's Oval Office address let Biden further drive home his point about unity while demonstrating leadership that could assuage nervous critics within his own party.

“We’ll debate and we’ll disagree, that’s not going to change,” Biden said in his afternoon remarks. “But we’ll not lose sight of who we are as Americans.”

Although investigators are still in the early stages of determining what occurred and why, some Biden critics were calling out the president for telling donors in a private call Monday that “it’s time to put Trump in the bullseye.”

A person familiar with those remarks said the president was trying to make the point that Trump had gotten away with a light public schedule after last month's debate while the president himself faced intense scrutiny. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity to more freely discuss private conversations.

In the donor call, Biden said: “I have one job and that’s to beat Donald Trump. ... I’m absolutely certain I’m the best person to be able to do that."

He continued: “So, we’re done talking about the debate. It’s time to put Trump in the bullseye. He’s gotten away with doing nothing for the last 10 days except ride around in his golf cart, bragging about scores he didn’t score. … Anyway I won’t get into his golf game.”

Trump, who will be formally nominated as the GOP’s presidential nominee on Thursday, still plans to attend the convention and officials stress the four-day event will go on as normal.

The shooting at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania is being i<a href="https://penncapital-star.com/campaigns-elections/fbi-identifies-shooter-in-assassination-attempt-on-trump-at-butler-rally/" target="_blank">nvestigated as an attempted assassination</a>&nbsp;and the FBI identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pa. The U.S. Secret Service “neutralized the shooter, who is now deceased,” the Secret Service said.

Trump, who has been declared “safe” by the Secret Service, posted on social media Sunday morning that he was still looking “forward to speaking to our Great Nation this week from Wisconsin.”

“Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers yesterday, as it was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening,” Trump wrote. “We will FEAR NOT, but instead remain resilient in our Faith and Defiant in the face of Wickedness. Our love goes out to the other victims and their families. We pray for the recovery of those who were wounded, and hold in our hearts the memory of the citizen who was so horribly killed. Senior advisors to the Trump campaign Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita released a statement hours after the shooting on Saturday to say that the former president wasn’t changing his plans.

“President Trump looks forward to joining you all in Milwaukee as we proceed with our convention to nominate him to serve as the 47th President of the United States,” Wiles and LaCivita wrote in a joint statement. “As our party’s nominee, President Trump will continue to share his vision to Make America Great Again.”

Reince Priebus, chairman of the MKE 2024 Host Committee, said in a separate statement that he was “heartbroken that reports indicate that at least one innocent person has been killed and perhaps others have been injured. This horrific violence has no place in America.”

“Guests have already begun to arrive in Wisconsin, and we look forward to working with the Republican National Committee to welcome everyone to Milwaukee this week,” Priebus added.

Political party conventions are designated as National Special Security Events, or NSSEs, and come with extremely heightened security compared to a typical campaign rally.

The Secret Service will have at least two security perimeters around the Fiserv Forum in downtown Milwaukee and the city itself will be swarming with additional federal, state and local law enforcement officers.

LOS ANGELES (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/shannen-doherty">Shannen Doherty,</a>&nbsp;the “Beverly Hills, 90210” star whose life and career were roiled by illness and tabloid stories, has died at 53.

After years with breast cancer, Doherty died Saturday, according to a statement from her publicist, Leslie Sloane.

“The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace,” Sloane said Sunday. The news was first reported by&nbsp;<a href="https://people.com/tv/shannen-doherty-dead/">People magazine.</a>

Her illness was publicly revealed in a lawsuit filed in 2015&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/c166828f0b06460f8a200eb36fbe2229">against her former business managers,</a>&nbsp;in which she alleged they mismanaged her money and allowed her health insurance to lapse. She later shared intimate details of her treatment following a single mastectomy. In December 2016, she posted a photo of her first day of radiation, calling the treatment "frightening" for her.

In February 2020, Doherty revealed that the cancer had returned and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/a562d190abee6807c30366d00b991043">she was at stage four.</a>&nbsp;She said she came forward because her health conditions could come out in court. The actor had sued insurance giant State Farm after her California home was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jury-shannen-doherty-state-far-fire-suit-6ee321978116bd3f951ce1726539b83f">damaged in a fire in 2018.</a>

“I have no idea how long I'm going to be on the chemo for. ... That's not something that I can predict, it's not something my doctors can predict. And it's scary, it's like a big wake-up call,” Doherty said on a late June episode of her podcast “Let's Be Clear,” adding that a recent change in the shape of her cancer cells meant there were new treatment protocols for her to try. “For the first time in a couple months probably, I feel hopeful because there are so many more protocols now, whereas before I was hopeful — but I was still getting prepared.”

A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Doherty moved to Los Angeles with her family at age 7 and, within a few years, became an actor.

“It was completely my decision,” she told The Associated Press in a 1994 interview. “My parents never pushed me into anything. They support me. It really wouldn’t matter if I was a professional soccer player — they’d still be as supportive and loving.”

As a child star, she worked steadily in such TV series as “Little House on the Prairie,” in which she played Jenny Wilder. Three years later, in 1997, Doherty was sentenced to anger-management counseling by a Beverly Hills Municipal Court judge after she allegedly smashed a beer bottle onto a man’s windshield during a quarrel. After a 2001 drunken driving arrest, she pleaded no contest and was ordered to serve five days in a work-release program.

Doherty reunited with Spelling when he cast her in 1998 as Prue Halliwell in “Charmed.” In an AP interview that year, the actor expressed regrets about her past.

“I did bring a lot of it on myself,” Doherty said. “I don’t think I can point fingers and say, ‘Oh, YOU’RE to blame.’ And I don’t do that with myself, either. Because I was just growing up.”
