Brandon Lee Frick age 40, of Hays, Kansas, passed away
unexpectedly on December 17, 2024, following an auto accident.

Brandon was born on July 29, 1984, in Great Bend, Kansas to Daniel
and Sherry Frick, and he grew up with a passion for both car audio and physical
fitness. He was a dedicated husband to his beloved wife, Carrie, and a devoted
father to their son, Jasper. Brandon’s family meant the world to him, and he
treasured every moment spent with them.

A true craftsman, Brandon had a remarkable talent for car audio
installation. His knack for working with technology and making things run
smoothly was only matched by his work ethic and hands-on approach. Whether
tinkering with audio systems or tackling projects at work, Brandon never
allowed himself to remain idle. He stayed active and in shape through
weightlifting and always sought new ways to challenge himself physically. His
love of music was evidenced in the way and manner he listened to it – not just
listening but feeling it and immersing himself in the lyrics and stories being
told through the melody. And if he was listening, you were too, even if you
lived a block and a half away.

He leaves behind his wife, Carrie; and their son, Jasper of Hays;
mother, Sherry Frick of Oakley; his brother, Christopher Frick of Grinnell; his
in laws: Dave and Lori Bixenman of Colby; sister in law: Maranda (Kevin) Motes
of Concordia; grandmother: Donna Kay Frick of Kinsley; aunts: Karen Frick of
Manhattan; Sandy (Larry) Barricklow of Florida, Tammi (Craig) Foos of Bazine,
and Barb Wassinger of Ness City; uncles: Steven Frick of McPherson; and Terry
Wassinger of Ness City; his nieces and nephews: Kinzee, Xezander, Kaytlynn, and
Zane. He will be deeply missed by his many cousins and extended family members.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his father, Daniel Eugene Frick and
uncle, Eddie Wassinger, Jr.

Brandon’s generous spirit and lively energy will be deeply missed
by all who knew him.

Linda
Kae Sulzman, 77, of Hays, died Tuesday, December 17, 2024. She was born
November 18, 1947, in Norton, Kansas, to Merton and Dorothy (Davis) Goodman.
Linda graduated from Jennings High School in 1965 and on July 27, 1965, married
Ronald “Chappy” Sulzman. The couple lived in Hays where Linda was a homemaker
until their three children were in school. She then went to work at Walmart in
Hays as one of their first employees and worked there until her retirement.

In
her spare time, Linda enjoyed reading, doing crosswords, going for walks, and
spending time outdoors. Above all, she loved being a grandmother and supporting
her grandkids at all their activities and sporting events.

Linda
was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ronald “Chappy”, and her brother
Lynn Goodman.

She
is survived by her children, Kyle (Erika) Sulzman, Shawn (Julie) Sulzman and
Roni (Dale) Dietz; sisters, Marcia (Larry) Stapp, Xandra (Chuck) Waggoner, Tina
Perdue and Kendra (Curt) Giebler; sister-in-law Sheryl Goodman; grandchildren,

The Salvation Army in Hays continues to ensure local children receive Christmas gifts through the Angel Tree Program.

However, the program did not receive as many gifts this year as in past years.

Salvation Army Service Extension Coordinator Laura Allen said the program helps parents bring joy to their children on Christmas, even in difficult times.

"The Angel Tree is basically a program for children whose parents don't have the ability to buy them Christmas gifts or many Christmas gifts," Allen said.

This year, 114 children registered as angels. While community participation started slowly, a late surge ensured every angel was adopted.

However, 40 angels' gifts have not been returned. If the angel gifts are not returned, donations from St. Nicholas of Myra and St. Mary's churches will provide gifts for the remaining children.

Those who have adopted an angel are encouraged to return their gifts promptly, no later than Tuesday. It is not too late for anyone wishing to donate gifts without adopting an angel.

"Even if somebody didn’t necessarily have an angel, they can bring gifts," Allen said. "We give them to one of the children that was registered."

Clothing, sports equipment and video game-related items such as Roblox and Fortnite merchandise are suggested gifts for teenage boys.

Recommended gifts for teenage girls include makeup, jewelry-making kits, and arts and crafts supplies.

"Older teenage boys and girls are not always easy to buy for," Allen said.

Allen said the Hadley Center, 205 E. Seventh St., is a drop-off location for gifts, and the Salvation Army will accept donations outside regular building hours.

"We will be here all day [Friday]. Even though we're distributing, we will still be here available to accept gifts to distribute," she said.

Donations can also be dropped off at Fuzzy's Taco Shop, 4310 Vine St., Hays, during their business hours:

10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday

40 Salvation Army Angel Tree gifts not returned this year

“Overwhelmed with thankfulness” is how Julina Wall Schmeeckle felt the day she discovered she had been chosen as a Schmidt Foundation Scholar. A member of the first cohort of Schmidt Foundation Scholars, Julina has the distinction of being the first Schmidt Scholar to graduate from FHSU, completing her degree in only 3 ½ years. Julina attained her educational milestone when she graduated in December with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

“I’ve had a nursing career on my mind since I can remember,” she said. “I had heard that Fort Hays had a really good nursing program. It was an option I wanted to look at, but being a first-generation college student, I knew college would have to be paid for on my own.”

Julina found a potential opportunity to fund her dream when, halfway through her senior year at Ingalls High School, she received an email from the Schmidt Foundation outlining the requirements for its full-ride scholarship. After realizing she met the qualifications and filling out the application, she landed in the top 20 applicants and interviewed via Zoom. 

Some time passed after the interview, so Julina prepared a fallback plan to attend Garden City Community College, just in case she didn’t receive the Schmidt Foundation scholarship.

However, one April afternoon, over the intercom at school, seniors were asked to meet in the office before going to lunch. When she entered the room, she saw her mother. The faculty asked Julina to sit at the front of the room facing a TV screen. Soon, Jessica Albin, chair of the Schmidt Foundation Scholars Committee, appeared on the screen, notifying Julina that she had been awarded a Schmidt Foundation scholarship.

“I was in shock,” Julina said. “I broke down. My whole plans changed, and I was going to Hays. I wouldn’t be walking across the stage here in Hays with my nursing degree without that (Schmidt Foundation) opportunity.”

Five Schmidt Scholars have been chosen each year since the scholarship’s inception in 2021. Preference for these scholarships is given to first-generation students from Kansas planning to major in healthcare, education, business, entrepreneurship, arts, or communication programs. 

The scholarship includes 30 hours of tuition and fees for fall and spring courses, books, and room and board. Once accepted, recipients can renew their scholarship for up to three additional years by maintaining their academic standing and continuing to meet the scholarship requirements.

Julina credits her family and husband, Brady, whom she married last summer, with providing the foundation of support that enabled her to complete her degree in just 3 ½ years.

“Nursing school is stressful, but my husband and family have been incredibly supportive,” she said. “I’m a first-generation college student, and they are thrilled that I’m seeking education. Growing up my parents didn’t get that experience, but really hoped that their kids would have the opportunity.”

Jessica Albin, through her role as chair of the scholarship committee, became acquainted with Julina during her years as an undergrad. Jessica speaks glowingly of Julina, saying that she “has been a standout student during her entire journey at FHSU.”

“If you asked her to accomplish something, you could consider it done,” Jessica said. “Julina’s character is as strong as her skills and abilities. She is just a solid person through and through and her family ought to be proud for raising such a poised, beautiful, and competent young woman.”

“She demonstrated strength by being willing to ask for help when she needed it, and she never missed a chance to say, ‘thank you.’”

What does the future hold for Julina? She said she plans to put her nursing skills to work at the Garden City Hospital in the labor and delivery department, where she recently completed her capstone internship.

In addition to her nursing career, Julina, who ran a swather for a local hay farmer during high school, helps on her husband's and his family’s farm.

“Working in the hay business taught me patience and how to ask others for help,” she said. “Now I’m adjusting to the farm wife life.”

Due to the observance of the Christmas holiday on Wednesday, December 25, the refuse/recycling collection schedules in Hays will be altered as follows:&nbsp;&nbsp;

• Monday and Tuesday routes will both be collected on Monday, December 23. • Wednesday and Thursday routes will both be collected on Thursday, December 26. • There are no anticipated changes to Friday's route.&nbsp;

It is anticipated that heavy volumes of refuse/recyclables&nbsp;will be encountered around the holidays. Please be sure to set your bags out by 7:00 a.m. on the collection day and keep in mind that the trucks have no set time schedule.

Refuse, recycling route changes in Hays for Christmas holiday

Fort Hays State University (FHSU) has cultivated a rodeo culture
fueled by passion, resilience, and a deep-rooted sense of community. Established
in 1965 as a recognized club, the FHSU Rodeo program has grown into a thriving
community of athletes and dedicated agriculture professionals. Under the
leadership of Coach Guy Forell, this program has cultivated a competitive edge
that resonates through every practice, rodeo event, and personal story of its
athletes.

"This has been a fun year. We keep getting more
competitive," says Coach Forell. “What makes this year especially
remarkable is the increase in scholarship opportunities, creating a
tighter-knit team focused on shared success. "It makes a difference in how
competitive we've become."

The Fall 2023 rodeo season showcased the team’s determination and
skill. FHSU secured second place in two rodeos - once with the women's team and
once with the men's. The team celebrated victories in multiple individual
events, with standout performances from athletes such as Cole Kerner, who
captured the All-Around award at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, first
place in bull riding, and second place in bareback riding.

Among those rising stars are freshmen Abagail Olson and Hailey
Witte. Abagail, the Reserve National Champion barrel racer from Sheridan,
Wyoming, grew up in a family of rodeo enthusiasts. She had a great first
semester, excelling in
barrel racing and also competing in goat tying and breakaway roping.
"This fall has been pivotal for me," Abagail shares. "I
currently sit in third place in the Central Plains Region, and I've placed in
nearly every rodeo."

“What I love about the FHSU Rodeo team is the support we give each

arenas at the outdoor rodeos.

Settling into her new life at FHSU doesn’t overwhelm Hailey;
instead, she thrives under pressure. “I’ve learned to brush off the small
mistakes and focus on the next run,” Hailey explains. Her commitment to her
sport is matched by her pursuit of a veterinary degree, attesting to her passion
for animal science and the agricultural community. 

Sophomore Cole Kerner embodies the spirit of the FHSU Rodeo.
Growing up in a family that lives and breathes rodeo in Sutherland, Nebraska,
he has faced the challenges and joys of rodeo. As a team officer, he
exemplifies leadership, bringing everyone together to support a shared goal. 

“My time here has been nothing short of extraordinary,” Cole says,
highlighting the welcoming nature of the rodeo community at FHSU. “There’s a
strong sense of family here. We all want each other to succeed.” He emphasizes
how traveling with his brother to competitions has strengthened their bond,
allowing them to share their dreams and challenges.

Cole’s achievements this season, including qualifying for several
short rounds, reflect his hard work, dedication, and the intensive, supportive
environment cultivated at FHSU. “It’s not just about individual victories; it’s
about lifting each other,” Cole said.

Freshman Tayln Wright, who hails from Canadian, Texas, exemplifies the spirit of
perseverance that defines FHSU Rodeo. Initially uncertain about her decision to
study in Kansas, Tayln fell in love with the campus. “I knew I found my place.”
She refuses to back down despite battling injury with her barrel horse, noting,
“Rodeo teaches patience and hard work. I’m committed to this journey.”

Meanwhile, Prairie Robbins, a nursing junior, echoes the
sentiments held among her teammates. “Despite the individualistic nature of
rodeo, the FHSU team functions as a family,” she asserts. “We want to see each
other succeed just as much as we want to succeed ourselves.”

Adding assistant coach Trevor Meier has further strengthened this
community, infusing the program with excitement and fresh ideas. “Trevor brings
a new perspective that motivates us all,” Cole notes. “It’s great to have
someone who understands the team dynamics and encourages us to push beyond our
limits.”

The journey of an FHSU rodeo athlete is marked not only by
competition but also by personal growth. Every rodeo tests skill,
determination, and character, and the team approaches each challenge with a
unified spirit. They know that every ride counts, but so does the bond they

With high hopes and even higher dreams for the spring, Abagail,
Hailey, Cole, and the rest of the team push each other to excel. “We’re not

in 1965 as a recognized club, the FHSU Rodeo program has grown into a thriving

leadership of Coach Guy Forell, this program has cultivated a competitive edge
that resonates through every practice, rodeo event, and personal story of its
athletes."This has been a fun year. We keep getting more

remarkable is the increase in scholarship opportunities, creating a
tighter-knit team focused on shared success. "It makes a difference in how
competitive we've become."The Fall 2023 rodeo season showcased the team’s determination and
skill. FHSU secured second place in two rodeos - once with the women's team and
once with the men's. The team celebrated victories in multiple individual
events, with standout performances from athletes such as Cole Kerner, who
captured the All-Around award at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, first
place in bull riding, and second place in bareback riding.Among those rising stars are freshmen Abagail Olson and Hailey
Witte. Abagail, the Reserve National Champion barrel racer from Sheridan,
Wyoming, grew up in a family of rodeo enthusiasts. She had a great first
semester, excelling in
barrel racing and also competing in goat tying and breakaway roping.
"This fall has been pivotal for me," Abagail shares. "I
currently sit in third place in the Central Plains Region, and I've placed in

Heart of a Tiger: FHSU Rodeo champions show competitive edge in a thriving program

HILO, Hawaii - The fifth-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team moved to 10-0 on the season with a 77-57 win over Truman State Thursday at the Big Island Holiday Classic. It's the fourth time the Tigers have won at least 10 games to start a season in program history and it is FHSU's 15th double-digit winning streak all-time.

The win is Fort Hays State's seventh victory this season by at least 20 points while FHSU did not trail in the game for a sixth time this year.

Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;won the opening tip and scored the first basket 18 seconds later off an assist from Katie DeGarmo, the first of 22 assists on 31 made field goals for the Tigers.

After a slow first three minutes of action for both teams, the Tigers blew things open with an 18-0 run over the next four minutes, FHSU's longest scoring run of the season. The Tigers hit 7-of-8 from the floor during that stretch while forcing four Bulldog turnovers.

Truman State (5-7) finally knocked down its first field goal of the game with 2:39 remaining in the first quarter to stop the bleeding and pull within 21-4. Ellie Stearns&nbsp;answered right back with her second 3-pointer of the game, putting the Tigers in front by 20 less than nine minutes into the contest. Fort Hays State finished the first quarter shooting a blistering 62.5 percent from the floor (10-of-16).

The Bulldogs got things going late in the first quarter and carried that momentum into the second frame, using a 10-2 run to close within a dozen, 26-14. The teams traded baskets for much of the second quarter, with the Tigers not allowing TSU to close any closer than 12 points on the scoreboard. Fort Hays State later went into the locker room in front 40-25 after a last-second 3-pointer from Megan Earney.

Fort Hays State methodically added to its lead throughout the second half, leading by as many as 27 midway through the fourth quarter. Talexa Weeter&nbsp;scored nine-straight points for the Tigers over the final four minutes of the third quarter, helping FHSU lead 59-38 with 10 minutes to play.

The Tiger defense limited Truman State to its lowest scoring output of the season, held the Bulldogs to a season-low three made 3-pointers and held them to their lowest shooting percentage of the year at 32.1 percent (17-of-53).FHSU outrebounded their former conference rival by 18, 47-29. The Tigers finished the game shooting 47 percent from the floor (31-of-66), 31.6 percent from behind the arc (6-of-19) and 81.8 percent (9-of-11) from the charity stripe.

DeGarmo and Weeter tied for the team lead with 19 points each, with DeGarmo adding eight rebounds, six assists and two steals and Weeter contributing nine rebounds. Hollenbeck recorded her second double-double of the season and the ninth of her career with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Friday's performance was the 100th time that DeGarmo scored in double figures in her FHSU career. Now with 1,569 career points, Hollenbeck moved into sixth place all-time at Fort Hays State, passing Roberta Augustine (1,552 points, 1979-83).

The Tigers will wrap up their trip to Hawaii on Friday (Dec. 20) when they play Quincy beginning at 10 p.m. (6 p.m. HT).&nbsp;&nbsp;

<a href="https://themiaanetwork.com/fhsutigers/"></a>The fifth-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team will wrap up non-conference play this week with two games at the 2024 Big Island Holiday Classic in Hilo, Hawaii. The Tigers will first match up with former MIAA rival Truman State at 8 p.m. Central (4 p.m. HT) on Thursday before facing off with Quincy on Friday beginning at 10 p.m. Central (6 p.m. HT).

The Tigers are 9-0 to start the season, making FHSU one of 12 remaining undefeated teams in Division II. One more win would give FHSU 10-straight wins to start a season for the fourth time in program history, while it would also be the 15th 10-game winning streak in team history.

Friday's matchup features two of the top rebounding teams in the country, with FHSU ranked 10th in Division II with 44.9 rebounds per night and Quincy close behind in 14th with an average of 44.5 rebounds per contest.

The Tigers also rank in the top 10 nationally in several other categories, including third in field goal percentage defense (31.0 percent), third in defensive rebounds per game (32.4), sixth in assist/turnover ratio (1.34), seventh in scoring margin (+24.4), eighth in assists per night (18.6) and ninth in fouls per game (13.2).

Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;scored in double figures again in FHSU's most recent win, a 30-point blowout against Washburn two weeks ago (83-53, 1/7/24). The graduate student now needs one more double-digit performance to reach 100-such outings in her FHSU career.

DeGarmo and Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;are tied for the team lead with eight double-digit scoring performances this season, while Talexa Weeter&nbsp;is close behind after scoring 10 or more in each of the last seven contests.

Hollenbeck ranks fifth in the nation among qualified players with a shooting percentage of 67.0 percent, second-best in the MIAA. She leads the conference with an average of 3.2 steals per night, ranking 18th in the country. The forward from Lincoln, Neb. has performed well in neutral site matchups this season, averaging 24.0 points across a pair of neutral-site wins.

Brooke Koewe&nbsp;continues to lead the conference in assists, averaging 5.9 per contest to rank inside the top 10 in all Division II.

While this is the women's basketball team's first trip to Hawaii in program history, they are not the first FHSU program to venture to the Aloha State. The volleyball team played in the 2013 Hawaii Invitational, while the men's basketball team made trips to Hawaii in January 1985 and in November 1978. The Tigers went 2-0 at the 1985 Brother Aiu Classic with wins over Alaska-Anchorage and Chaminade while going 1-2 with a win over BYU-Hawaii and two losses against Chaminade in 1978.

However, the women's basketball team does have some experience playing on a tropical island. FHSU traveled to Nassau, Bahamas to play in the Great Goombay Shootout in January 1988, where they defeated Marvyille 82-45 and lost to Washburn 58-56.

The Tigers are 57-17 against current GLVC programs, however the Tigers are just 3-0 when playing a team while they are a part of the GLVC at the time of the game. All three games against at-the-time GLVC members were against Rockhurst, with the most recent coming in a 34-point home win in December 2018 (89-55, 12/17/18).

The Tigers are 7-7 all-time against the Bulldogs, including a 7-6 lead in MIAA matchups while the teams were in the same conference between 2006 and 2013. Truman State won the lone neutral site meeting, defeating the Tigers 86-73 in Topeka, Kan. early in the 1998-99 season (11/27/98). The Bulldogs hold a one-game winning streak in the series, winning the most recent matchup in double overtime nearly 12 years ago (57-55, 1/26/13).

While no current Tigers have any experience playing Truman State, there are two individuals on the bench that have laced up the sneakers against TSU. Head coach Talia Kahrs&nbsp;(then Miller) knocked down a 3-pointer in three of her four career matchups against Truman State in 2010 and 2011, while assistant coach Paige Lunsford&nbsp;played one game against the Bulldogs as a true freshman in 2013 and recorded two points, three rebounds and one steal.

Truman State is 5-6 overall and 2-1 in GLVC play so far this season. The Bulldogs have played three MIAA schools this season, going 1-2 with a win over Newman and losses against Arkansas-Fort Smith and Washburn. Jordan Cunningham leads the GLVC and ranks 22nd nationally with 191 points so far this season, averaging a team-high 17.4 points per contest. The Bulldogs are attempting more than 24 3-pointers per game, second-most in the GLVC.

Quincy enters the weekend 6-4 overall and 1-2 in GLVC action. The Hawks won their only other matchup against an MIAA program this season, beating Washburn 70-67 at home. Quincy averages 44.5 rebounds per game, 14th-most in Division II. Their rebound margin of +12.7 is eighth-best in the country. Cymirah Williams collects a team-best 9.2 rebounds per night, second-most in the GLVC. One more win would give FHSU 10-straight wins to start a season for the fourth time in program history, while it would also be the 15th 10-game winning streak in team history.Friday's matchup features two of the top rebounding teams in the country, with FHSU ranked 10th in Division II with 44.9 rebounds per night and Quincy close behind in 14th with an average of 44.5 rebounds per contest.The Tigers also rank in the top 10 nationally in several other categories, including third in field goal percentage defense (31.0 percent), third in defensive rebounds per game (32.4), sixth in assist/turnover ratio (1.34), seventh in scoring margin (+24.4), eighth in assists per night (18.6) and ninth in fouls per game (13.2).Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;scored in double figures again in FHSU's most recent win, a 30-point blowout against Washburn two weeks ago (83-53, 1/7/24). The volleyball team played in the 2013 Hawaii Invitational, while the men's basketball team made trips to Hawaii in January 1985 and in November 1978. The Tigers went 2-0 at the 1985 Brother Aiu Classic with wins over Alaska-Anchorage and Chaminade while going 1-2 with a win over BYU-Hawaii and two losses against Chaminade in 1978.However, the women's basketball team does have some experience playing on a tropical island. FHSU traveled to Nassau, Bahamas to play in the Great Goombay Shootout in January 1988, where they defeated Marvyille 82-45 and lost to Washburn 58-56.The Tigers are 57-17 against current GLVC programs, however the Tigers are just 3-0 when playing a team while they are a part of the GLVC at the time of the game. All three games against at-the-time GLVC members were against Rockhurst, with the most recent coming in a 34-point home win in December 2018 (89-55, 12/17/18).The Tigers are 7-7 all-time against the Bulldogs, including a 7-6 lead in MIAA matchups while the teams were in the same conference between 2006 and 2013. Truman State won the lone neutral site meeting, defeating the Tigers 86-73 in Topeka, Kan. early in the 1998-99 season (11/27/98). The Bulldogs hold a one-game winning streak in the series, winning the most recent matchup in double overtime nearly 12 years ago (57-55, 1/26/13).While no current Tigers have any experience playing Truman State, there are two individuals on the bench that have laced up the sneakers against TSU. Head coach Talia Kahrs&nbsp;(then Miller) knocked down a 3-pointer in three of her four career matchups against Truman State in 2010 and 2011, while assistant coach Paige Lunsford&nbsp;played one game against the Bulldogs as a true freshman in 2013 and recorded two points, three rebounds and one steal.Truman State is 5-6 overall and 2-1 in GLVC play so far this season. The Bulldogs have played three MIAA schools this season, going 1-2 with a win over Newman and losses against Arkansas-Fort Smith and Washburn. Dorothy Dietz, age 93, of Locust Grove Village in LaCrosse, Kansas, passed away
on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, in LaCrosse. She was born on July 7, 1931, in
Rush County, Kansas, to Sylvester and Mary (Unrein) Zimmerman.



Dolores was a woman of great strength and resilience, known for her devotion to
family. She was united in marriage to Lavine Herrman on May 10, 1949 in
Schoenchen, Kansas, who preceded her in death on December 14, 1977. On March
17, 1979, she married Robert Dietz in LaCrosse. Robert also preceded her in
death on February 22, 2013.



Dolores dedicated her life to her family, enjoying the company of her
grandchildren. She was a homemaker, known for her impeccable housekeeping,
strong-willed nature, and kind heart. Dolores found joy in creative pursuits
such as sewing, needlepointing, crocheting, and playing bingo. A gifted
musician, she could play both the organ and accordion by ear, sharing her
musical talents with others.



Her faith was central to her life. Dolores served as the church organist at St.
Joseph’s Catholic Church in Liebenthal, where she was also a member of the
altar society. Later, she attended St. Michael’s Catholic Church in LaCrosse
and St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church in Hays.



Dolores is survived by her sons, Ronald Herrman and wife Nancy of Hays, and
Stephen Herrman and wife Vicki of Emporia, Kansas; her stepchildren, John Dietz
and wife Liza, and James Dietz and wife Natasha; her brothers, Leon, Lavern,
Duane, David, and Michael Zimmerman; her sisters, Norma Jacobs and Janet
Steinert; her grandchildren, Jamie Herrman, Heather Herrman, Amy Hayden, Tate
Herrman, and Stephanie Brown; 4 step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and
three great-great-grandchildren.



She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; a brother, Percy
Zimmerman; and sisters, Patti Zimmerman, Cathy Kreutzer, and Elma Suppes.



Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at
St. Michael’s Catholic Church in LaCrosse, Kansas, with Fr. Stephen Dabanka
officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.



Visitation will be Friday, December 20, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Keithley
Funeral Homes and Crematory - Brock's Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601. On
Saturday, visitation will be from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at St. Michael’s Church,
followed by a rosary service at 10:30 AM.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Michael’s
Church.

Fort Hays State University will offer two artificial intelligence-focused classes for students as faculty and staff remain on the fence about its use.

Instructional Technologist Magdalene Moy, chairwoman of the FHSU Generative AI Task Force, hopes more programs embrace AI and take advantage of its potential benefits.

"I think that other departments are going to look toward building this up for their students," Moy said.

This spring, Moy will teach "Philosophy of AI: Foundations and Frontiers," an online course for students with various guest speakers.

The course delves into AI from philosophical and interdisciplinary perspectives. The class features lectures by philosophers, computer engineers, machine learning specialists and legal experts.

"The class goes into how this is going to affect fields, so I have a lawyer coming to speak about where we are in the legal system with AI," Moy said.

Specific topics the class will dive into include the Turing Test, a method for assessing a machine's capability to show human-like intelligence, and the Chinese Room Experiment, a thought experiment challenging the notion that a computer program can genuinely understand language.

Moy said students will also participate in debates, complete writing assignments and work on a final project that examines AI’s relevance to their profession and future.

"It's taking 'What is thinking?' 'What is a mind?' 'How is AI like thinking?' and 'Where is the complement there?'" Moy said.

Open to all students, the online class aims to help them critically examine philosophical and practical questions about AI and its potential. Enrollment is currently open.

"This is meant to be a foundational course to understand the power of AI, where it comes from, why it's important and its potential," she said. "

Moy said the class could be offered in future semesters depending on interest.

Moy said opinions on AI usage among FHSU faculty and staff vary, and there is no consensus on its implementation.

Some faculty are concerned that overreliance on AI could impede students' skill development, which Moy said is valid.

"Even with people who are pro using AI, they might feel like it's appropriate for them to have students use AI in one class but not the other," she said.

Potential negatives are concerns about cheating, job displacement, data and ethical use, and bias in data training.

Another course, "AI in Biology and Medicine," will be offered this spring through the FHSU Biological Sciences Department by Assistant Professor Michael Grenstaeudl.

Moy said Grenstaeudl developed the course independently and the AI Task Force, as their collaboration primarily focuses on sharing resources and promoting initiatives.

Moy said she hopes other departments such as English, Agriculture and Computer Science will introduce their own AI courses in the future.

According to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.goldmansachs.com/">Goldman Sachs</a>, Generative AI will affect 300 million full-time jobs worldwide, and AI will take over between 25% and 50% of the workload.

Sixxty-five percent of skills in the workforce are also expected to change by 2030 because of AI, according to Linkedin.

The FHSU Generative AI Task Force launched a website offering classroom resources and the latest updates on AI.

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Fort Hays State senior running back Shane Watts was named to the D2CCA All-America Football Team on Wednesday (Dec. 18). Watts was a second-team selection at running back, one of four running backs overall named to the D2CCA All-America Team.

Watts gives FHSU two All-America performers in 2024 with Myles Menges earning AFCA All-America First Team honors as a defensive lineman. Watts was an All-MIAA First Team selection as an all-purpose back, since he led the MIAA in all-purpose yards with 1,769.

Watts ranks fourth in NCAA Division II for total rushing yards (1,303) and all-purpose yards per game (160.8). He ranks eighth in total touchdowns (17) and ninth in total points scored (102). He ranks seventh in points per game (9.3). Watts averaged 5.8 yards per rush attempt in 2024. He produced the 20th 1,000-yard rushing season in FHSU and first since Kenneth Iheme in 2017. The 1,303 rushing yards ranks sixth for a season in FHSU program history.

With six 100-plus yard rushing games in 2024, Watts moved up into a tie with Emmett Pride and Kenneth Iheme for the fifth-most in program history with nine. Watts played just two years at running back after converting from the defensive side of the ball midway through his career at FHSU. With his two 200-plus rushing yard games this year, he tied for the most in program history with Shaquille Cooper, Jordan Hickel, and Andre Smith. Watts (2024) and Cooper (2015) are the only two Tigers to produce a pair of 200-plus yard rushing games in the same season. Watts had a career-best 250-yard rushing game against Emporia State on November 2.

Watts and Menges are the first All-America selections for the Tigers since the 2021 season, when tight end Hunter Budke was a selection by five organizations and offensive lineman Amari Angram-Boldin was a selection by the Don Hansen Football Committee.

🏈Watts Selected to D2CCA All-America Second Team

WACO, Texas – Fort Hays State defensive lineman Myles Menges was named to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-America First Team on Wednesday (Dec. 18). Menges was the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year in 2024 and was a four-time All-MIAA selection for the Tigers. He is the first AFCA All-America selection for the Tigers since Hunter Budke was a first-team selection at tight end in 2021.

Menges is the fifth player under head coach Chris Brown to receive All-America honors from the AFCA. He is the third defensive lineman among the five to earn the honor. He joins Sie Doe, Jr. (2016 – First Team Defensive Line), Nathan Shepherd (2017 – First Team Defensive Line), Dante Brown (2019 – Second Team Kicker), and Hunter Budke (2021 – First Team Tight End) in the prestigious group. All three defensive linemen to receive the honor were the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year in the respective seasons they earned the honor.

Menges adds this honor to a big list of accolades throughout his Tiger career. Earlier this year he was named to the D2CCA All-Super Region 3 Team. He is a four-time all-conference selection. He is a two-time CSC Academic All-District selection and will be considered for CSC Academic honors again this year with the voting yet to take place.

Menges finished the 2024 season with 27 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 6.5 tackles for loss, one interception, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. His most impressive stat was 11 pass breakups by batting down several passes at the line of scrimmage. He led all defensive linemen in NCAA Division II by a landslide, the only one to reach double figures, and it ranked 16th nationally all behind defensive backs, which dominate the category. His total was enough to lead one of the four conferences within Super Region 3.

Menges finished his FHSU career with 182 tackles, 30.5 tackles for loss, 15 sacks, 2 interceptions, 23 pass breakups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.
