Hays city commissioners approved three items Thursday advancing the largest ever housing development. Prior to the votes, there was discussion of fire protection for the new neighborhood, prompted by comments from an audience member.

Hays resident Justin Choitz, a former Hays firefighter, said he is supportive of Tallgrass Addition 4 in east Hays near 22nd and Wheatland.

But he asked about coverage and response time by the Hays Fire Department to the 101-lot development and nearby 66 homes in Phases 1-3.

The <a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/290e98f9-e910-4da1-987d-38464f1796c7">newest fire station opened in April 2024</a> in northwest Hays at 1732 W. 41st St. and serves as the department headquarters.&nbsp;

Fire department staff are split between the new location and the former headquarters in the downtown fire station at 1507 Main.&nbsp;

A third fire station is at the Hays Regional Airport and is staffed according to the commercial air flight schedule.

The Federal Aviation Administration paid for 90 percent of the structure built in 2009. It was designed to FAA standards and can be enlarged to house more fire equipment and personnel to serve the city.&nbsp;

Commissioner Shaun Musil asked City Manager Toby Dougherty about potential plans for hiring more firefighters in the next five years.

Dougherty said any expansion would be costly.&nbsp;

"We're always evaluating our needs for future public safety," Dougherty said, "but right now, we're in an ISO rating of two, which is the second-highest you can get.

"We do have limited sources. We don't have unlimited funds. But we do have lots of pots we can pull from if needed, including mutual aid agreements. We know there will be a time we need to expand east."

Another eastside housing development, The Grove, will soon be built north of HaysMed on Canterbury Drive.&nbsp;

Commissioners unanimously approved a rezoning request, a final plat for the 101 lots and an engineering services agreement for the land to be developed by Grow Hays/Heart of America.&nbsp;

Sloan Engineering and Consulting, Hays, was approved for a $249,850 contract for the engineering services.&nbsp;

In other business, a bid was approved to reconstruct 32nd/33rd Street from Willow to Vine, built in the early 1960s.

Vogts-Parga Construction, Moundridge, submitted the lowest bid for the project, $1.55 million, which is $245,000 under budget.

Public Works Director Jesse Rohr said the project includes removing and replacing all the concrete pavement, various areas of curb and gutter, select areas of sidewalk and curb ramps to meet ADA requirements, intersections, and some alley entrances. 

The north intersection of Skyline and 33rd Street will also be widened.&nbsp;

A public meeting will be  at 5 p.m. Tuesady, Feb. 4, in Hays City Hall to discuss the traffic phasing that will be done. 

At least one lane of traffic will be open at all times, Rohr said, and drivers will be encouraged to utilize 37th Street if possible.&nbsp;

A construction engineering services agreement with Driggs Design Group, Hays, for $52,320 was also approved for the project.

Construction of a new drainage box is expected to start in mid-February, with the work completed by early July.

The commission also approved an annexation request from BEREXCO, LLC, the Hays branch of an independent oil and gas exploration and production company, for its 5-acre front lot property at 800A Commerce Parkway. The remainder of the lot will remain in the county.

The land is contiguous to the city and served by city utilities.

Rohr said the company would otherwise have had to invest in a new septic system.

As part of the North Vine Corridor improvements, the city of Hays ended up with a small remnant tract of property. The tract has no value to the city, and the commission authorized its transfer to Russ Pfannenstiel, the adjacent property owner of CERVS.

The following mayoral appointments were approved: • Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau Advisory Committee, Jeremy Gill – three-year term to expire on Feb. 13, 2028 (third term) • Hays Housing Authority Board, Jo Ann Morse – four-year term to expire Feb. 13, 2029 (first term) • Northwest Kansas Community Corrections and Juvenile Services Governing Board, Donnette Noble – two-year term to expire Feb. 1, 2027 (first term)&nbsp;

Commissioners also heard monthly updates about community events in Hays and city department project reports.

Mayor Sandy Jacobs was absent from the meeting.

🎙Fire coverage concerns addressed for Hays' largest ever housing development

The Ellis County Conservation District has selected Lyle and Lynelle Gottschalk for the 2024 Conservation Rangeland award.

Lyle started farming with his cousin Bryan Gottschalk in 1983. Their parents farmed together until they decided to split everything. After the split, the cousins started their own farming operations.

Part of the 3,000 acres Lyle owns he bought, and he inherited a quarter of land from his parents, Vernon and Jeanette Gottschalk. He wanted to build his home on the farmland he bought but when he drilled for water, he came up dry. He ended up making his home in Ellis.

In 1999 Lyle married Lynelle of Cheyenne Wells and had one son together, Kade. Kade is attending Fort Hays State University studying Agronomy and works at Nutrien. He occasionally helps Lyle on the farm. Lyle has a stepdaughter, Elexx Gnad of Kansas City, Kansas and a son, Brit Hale of Joplin, Missouri. Lyle and Lynelle share four grandchildren.

Lyle practices no-till most of the time and runs a 150-cow calf operation with 240 yearlings. The 3,000 acres he owns are pasture and farm ground. He plants a wheat milo rotation to feed his cows. Lyle likes to be working on the farm and hopes to continue until he isn’t able to anymore. His succession plan is to pass the land to his son Kade.

2024 Conservation Rangeland Award presented to Gottschalks

Marla Matkin, Hill City, an independent humanities scholar and performer, will present “Pioneering Women” Sunday, Jan. 26 at 3 p.m. at the Hoxie High School Auditorium.

Admission to the Western Plains Arts Association program is by season ticket or at the door.

This program is funded by numerous businesses, individuals, The Sheridan County Community Foundation, and the Dane G. Hansen Foundation.

Matkin will provide an elementary school program in the Quinter gym at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 27. &nbsp;

Matkin comes by her love of history having been born in Dodge City and raised nearby.&nbsp; She is on a continuing search to expand her knowledge and understanding of the legend and lore surrounding the region and its people.&nbsp;This deep connection can be traced back to her great-grandparents who homesteaded in southwest Kansas in 1877. 

Add to this her love of drama and she makes a compelling case for the ladies she portrays and the history she imparts as teacher, historian, living historian and now children’s author.

A graduate of Fort Hays State University with a degree in education, she has informed, inspired, as well as entertained her audiences for 25 years from the heartland to the Smithsonian.&nbsp;

In addition to&nbsp;Pioneering Women,&nbsp;Matkin presents related programs to communities throughout America’s heartland, especially in Kansas and Nebraska.&nbsp;

'Pioneering Women' to be presented in Hoxie, Quinter by Marla Matkin

Hays High won their fourth game in a row which also put them into the championship of the Colby Orange &amp; Black Classic. The 62-48 victory over Colby marks the tenth time Hays has made the championship game in twenty-two tries.

The game was full of runs by both teams early. Colby opened the game on a 10-2 run in the first three minutes. Hays responded with 11-0 run during which they took their first lead of the game. The Eagles went on another first quarter run. Nine straight points by Colby recaptured the lead at 19-13.

Colby continued to lead 21-15 after the first quarter and still led by five at 27-22 three and a half minutes into the second quarter. The Indians went back on the attack and closed the first half with an 11-3 run that gave Hays a 33-30 halftime lead.

A strong third quarter propelled Hays to a double digit lead. The Indians outscored Colby 13-4 in a little over six minutes. That stretch put the Hays High lead up to 46-34 before Colby hit a pair of free throws to end the third quarter.

Hays scored the first five points of the fourth quarter and built a game high edge of 15 at 51-36. The lead for the Indians hovered between nine and twelve points for a majority of the fourth quarter. Hays made four of their last six free throws to win 62-48.

Colby(8-4) was 9 for 11 shooting in the first quarter. They made 10 of 36 shots rest of the way. Hays(7-4) shot 48% from the floor. Cooper Lindenmeyer grabbed a game high and career high nine rebounds for the Indians.

Hays will face Olathe North at 6:00 in the championship on Saturday.

🏀 Hays uses big runs to beat Colby; advances to championship

&nbsp;PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Fort Hays State track and field teams delivered an impressive performance at the Rumble in the Jungle Invitational Friday, highlighted by individual victories, NCAA Division II provisional marks, and multiple point-scoring efforts. The men's team secured a fifth-place finish with 44 team points, while the women's team tied for ninth with 18 points in a highly competitive field.

The men's team showcased a balanced effort across track and field events.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/christian-darrah/8512">Christian Darrah</a>&nbsp;headlined the day by capturing gold in the mile run, clocking an impressive time of 4:11.89 to earn 10 points. Teammate&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/brady-stegman/8503">Brady Stegman</a>&nbsp;also contributed to the team total with an eighth-place finish in 4:20.52, adding one more point.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/hayden-albright/8477">Hayden Albright</a>&nbsp;had a standout performance, finishing third in the 200m dash with a blazing time of 21.47, earning 6 points and achieving an NCAA Division II provisional mark. Albright followed up by placing sixth in the 400m dash, clocking 48.49 to add 3 more points to his tally. The Tigers' sprint crew showed their depth in the 60m dash prelims, with both Hayden and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/avrey-albright/8476">Avrey Albright</a>&nbsp;narrowly missing the finals after identical times of 6.91.

The Tigers were dominant in the pole vault, where&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/jacob-clark/8482">Jacob Clark</a>&nbsp;claimed first place by clearing 16-8.00, securing 10 points and meeting the NCAA Division II provisional standard. Josiah Bell added to the team's success in the event with a fifth-place finish, vaulting 15-8.25 to collect 4 points, while&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/brady-deges/8485">Brady Deges</a>&nbsp;placed seventh with a mark of 15-2.25, contributing 2 additional points.

Diercks' impressive finish set the tone for the Tigers on the track as she notched a provisional mark as well. Sprinter&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-track-and-field/roster/reba-mader/8402">Reba Mader</a>&nbsp;and hurdler&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-track-and-field/roster/donna-jackson/8400">Donna Jackson</a>&nbsp;both had solid outings, narrowly missing point-scoring positions. Mader finished 10th in the 400m dash with a time of 57.56, while Jackson placed 13th in the 60m hurdles, crossing the line in 9.34.In the pole vault,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-track-and-field/roster/annabeth-baalmann/8389">Annabeth Baalmann</a>&nbsp;cleared 12-4.50 to finish fifth, earning 4 points and hitting the NCAA Division II provisional mark. The men's team secured a fifth-place finish with 44 team points, while the women's team tied for ninth with 18 points in a highly competitive field.The men's team showcased a balanced effort across track and field events.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/christian-darrah/8512">Christian Darrah</a>&nbsp;headlined the day by capturing gold in the mile run, clocking an impressive time of 4:11.89 to earn 10 points. COLBY - Two undefeated teams entered the championship semifinals in the Colby Orange &amp; Black Classic Friday afternoon. Only Hays remained that way after a 74-72 overtime victory that gave Wellington their first loss.

Wellington led for the entire first half. Hays tied the score at five in the first quarter just over two minutes into the game. The Indians though went scoreless for the next 3:35 and fell behind 11-5.

Hays once trailed by a single possession several different times in the first quarter before Wellington took a 16-12 lead after the first eight minutes.

Wellington held three different six point leads early in the second quarter and led by nine at 26-17. The Crusaders' biggest lead came at 30-19 with three minutes remaining before halftime and led 36-25 at the midgame break.

Wellington took their biggest lead of the game early in the third quarter on a free throw at 37-25. Hays spend the next ten minutes chipping away at the lead.&nbsp;

The Indians trailed 40-29 midway through the third quarter when they took a chunk out of the lead outscoring Wellington 10-2. That run pulled Hays within a single possession at 42-39. The Crusaders pushed the lead back to six with a three pointer and led by four heading to the fourth quarter 47-43.

Hays took their first lead with 5:30 to go in regulation during another 10-2 run. Hays never trailed again. Wellington tied the game at 55 with 4:42 left before Hays scored the next eight points for a 63-55 edge with 2:40 remaining.

The Indians though scored just one point rest of regulation and Wellington ended the game on a 9-1 run to tie the game with 1:05 left. Wellington got the final look of regulation but the shot from just outside the block was blocked and the game went to overtime tied at 64.

Hays led by five twice in overtime at 71-66 and 73-68. The final five point lead with 1:17 on the clock proved to be just enough. Wellington scored four straight points over the next 25 seconds to pull within one at 73-72. The Crusaders had a chance to take the lead but couldn't connect on a shot. A final Hays free throw and steal in the final four seconds kept Hays undefeated with the 74-72 win.

Hays(11-0) will face either Colby or Beloit in the championship game at 4:00 on Saturday. It is the Indians second championship appearance. Their other title game was in 2019 during their first visit to the Orange &amp; Black. Wellington(10-1) plays for third place at 1:00.

Val Norwood, a Lindenwood signee, led Wellington with 22. Jenna Schmeidler and Molly Martin each scored 19. Katie Linenberger recorded a double-double at 15 points and 11 rebounds.

🏀 Hays girls' wins overtime thriller over Wellington; remains undefeated

It is time for the 11th annual KSU Watersheds and city of Hays water poster Contest. The 2025 theme is “Know Water…Know Life.”

Daycares, pre-schools, USD 489, Holy Family Elementary, TMP Marian and home-school students, ages pre-school through 12th, students, faculty, and staff, Fort Hays State University, Fort Hays Tech/North Central students, faculty and staff, and adults in Hays are eligible to participate. 

There is also an Intellectual/Development Disabilities (IDD) division for youth through adults.

The “Know Water…Know Life” posters can focus on water conservation or stormwater/water quality messages. 

Posters could show how to reduce water usage indoors, outdoors, and/or at home and work. Also, posters might share how to reduce sediment, nutrients, and E. coli bacteria, household chemicals, etc. that are harmful to water sources. Both water conservation and stormwater/water quality can be highlighted on the same poster.

Posters must be horizontal, designed on 12 x 18-inch white poster paper with “Know Water…Know Life” included. 

Posters can be designed with pencil, paints, pens, crayons, or markers. In addition, the posters can be 3-dimensional, or computer generated. 

Name, age, and teacher need to be included on the back of the poster. 

Poster paper is available for pick-up at the Public Works Department, 1002 Vine Street, during regular business hours. 

Prize money will be awarded to 1st- 3rd place winners in each age division. 

Winning posters will be displayed at Tri- Central Office Supply, 1101 Main, Hays during the month of May and at the Ellis County Fair in July.

Posters are due by Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at school offices, city hall, or the Public Works Department. 

The awards celebration will be held at Sternberg Museum of Natural History on April 1 at 6 p.m.

Mark A. Sander, 68, of Lenexa, Kansas, passed away peacefully at
his home on January 14th, 2025. He was born on November 7th, 1956, and raised
in Gorham, Kansas, where he developed a deep sense of faith, family and
farming.

Mark is survived by his
loving wife, Susie Sander; his children Luke (Katie) Sander, Lynn (Derek
Fricke) Sander, and Elizabeth (Ryan) Roddy; his brother, Bruce (Mary) Sander;
as well as his cherished grandchildren: Jack Sander, Audrey Sander, Isla Fricke,
Walker Fricke, Nora Roddy, and Bennet Fricke. He was preceded in death by his
parents, Louis R. and Irene Sander.

Mark graduated from Gorham
High School and continued his education at Fort Hays State University. His
professional career in information technology spanned several companies,
including Boeing, Sprint, and H&amp;R Block. A dedicated member of St. Paul Catholic
Church in Olathe, Mark was also an active participant in the Knights of
Columbus, where he made lasting connections in his community.

Mark had a passion for his
family, which was the center of his life. Along the way, he built lasting
friendships, which he never took for granted. He also found joy in working the
land, especially driving the combine during the family harvest. He was a loyal
fan of the Kansas Jayhawks and the Kansas City Chiefs, and he had a love for
sports that he passed down to his children and grandchildren. Above all, Mark
will be remembered for his sharp wit, strong work ethic, and his unwavering
sense of humor that brightened the lives of all who knew him.

A celebration of Mark’s
life will be held at Penwell-Gabel in Olathe on 2/6/2025 from 6:00-8:00pm.
Funeral mass will be at St. Paul Catholic Church in Olathe on 2/7/2025. There
will be a Knights of Columbus prayer and eulogy at 10:45, mass at 11:00 with a
luncheon to follow. The burial will be at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery after
the luncheon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to
Catholic Charities - Family Support Center of Olathe in Mark’s memory.

Mark’s legacy will live on
through the love he shared with his family and friends, and he will be deeply
missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

The Hays High girls and Wellington play in one of the highest profile games in the state on Friday afternoon. The game is in the championship semifinals of the Colby Orange &amp; Black Classic.

#8-5A Hays(10-0) and #1-4A Wellington(10-0) both picked up double digit wins over their opponents in the first round. Wellington was the 4A State Runner-Up in 2024. Hays and Wellington are both at the top of their respective sub-state standings heading into the matchup.

Winner of this game will play in the championship game on Saturday.

Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. on the Hays High Sports Network.

ELLIS COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just after 5:30a.m. Friday in Ellis County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2014 Lexus driven by Douglas Wade&nbsp;Bearden, 56, Longmont, Colorado, was eastbound on Interstate 70 one mile east of Commerce Parkway.

&nbsp;The vehicle traveled off the road into the median, jumped a crossover, rolled and came to rest on the drivers side.

EMS transported&nbsp;Bearden and a passenger Tyahnie Shaddid Kitrina Bearden, 19, San Antonio, Texas, to Hays Medical Center.&nbsp; The driver was later air-lifted to a hospital in Denver. Both were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Driver air-lifted to hospital after I-70 rollover crash

Marcel A. Shoemaker, 65, of Bella Vista, AR, passed away on January 22,
2025 at his home surrounded by family.&nbsp;
He was born September 22, 1959, in Hays, KS to Alfred and Simone (Noël)
Shoemaker.&nbsp; The family then moved to his
mother's hometown in Belgium for 3 years before returning to Hays. He spent the
rest of his childhood there and graduated from Hays High School in 1977.

He worked a variety of jobs as a young adult before graduating from NCK Vo-
Tech as a Licensed Practical Nurse. He enjoyed both psychiatric and geriatric nursing,
went on to graduate from Barton County Community College with an Associate
Degree in Nursing, and continued his career as a Registered Nurse. Marcel and
his family moved to Abilene, KS where he began work as the Director of the new
geriatric-psychiatric behavioral health unit at Abilene Memorial Hospital. He
worked there for 18 years, growing and maintaining the unit eventually named
the ROSE (Rehabilitation of Special Elderly) Unit.&nbsp; During his time in Abilene, he was an active
member of the Kiwanis Club and involved with various community organizations. 

He retired from AMH in 2016 and he and his wife Megan then moved to
Arkansas after falling in love with the Natural State many years prior during
one of their long weekend adventures. &nbsp;He
was beyond thrilled when two children and their families eventually moved
there, too.&nbsp; 

Marcel has always had a love of cars, especially muscle cars, and spent
many weekends at the dragstrip racing his 1981 Camaro that he had fixed up and
painted his favorite coppery orange color. He even won a few races. Not only
did he enjoy the thrill of the race, but also the camaraderie with both high
school buddies and new friends meant even more.

Marcel and Megan enjoyed traveling to new and different places.&nbsp; Although some of their best trips were the long
weekends spent exploring Arkansas and other nearby states, two of his favorites
were a three-week trip to see his mother's side of the family in Belgium and
visit other European countries and fulfilling his dream to see the Northern
Lights in Alaska. He also enjoyed fishing, boating, riding his Harley and
gardening-with a particular passion for growing ornamental sunflowers.&nbsp; He also loved rocks, gemstones and mining for
Arkansas quartz crystals.

Marcel was preceded in death by his parents and a niece, Erica Bollig. 

He is survived by Megan, his wife of 27 years and 4 children: Dylan(Sarah)Shoemaker,
Liz(Chris)Quenzer,&nbsp;
Brianna(Travis)Brandt, Brendan(Kennya)Arnold; Nine grandchildren: Carter,
Miah, Jordan, Maverick, Liam, Zeplin, Kingston, Zoey, Koa and the 10th, a
granddaughter due in February; his sister Suzanne(Mick)Bollig, brother Alan
Shoemaker, numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends he considered family.

A memorial service and celebration of life will be planned at a future
date.

Curtis Hammeke, Fort Hays State University Director of Athletics, announced he will retire from his position effective in June of 2025. Hammeke will complete 21 years of service in his role at Fort Hays State at the end of the 2024-25 academic year. He has had a major impact on Fort Hays State's continued athletic success at the NCAA Division II level, while also making a tremendous impact on the community of Hays in his time as an administrator, coach, and student-athlete at FHSU.

A native of Great Bend, Kansas, Hammeke has spent nearly three decades at Fort Hays State University. His time began as a baseball student-athlete in the mid-1980s followed by five years as head coach of the Tiger baseball team from 1991-1996. He is currently in his 21st year of service as Director of Athletics for the Tigers, running from 2004-2025. He received his bachelor's degree from Fort Hays State University in Physical Education in 1985 and then completed his master's degree in Athletic Administration in 1993.

"Having spent the vast majority of my adult life engaged with this university, I'm thankful for the many opportunities I've been given as a student-athlete, baseball coach, and as director of athletics. I will always be grateful for the relationships developed through the years, and the people I've worked alongside both internally and externally," said Hammeke.

In Hammeke's time as Director of Athletics, Fort Hays State has enjoyed a total of 22 team conference titles in all sports combined since 2004. Numerous individual conference titles were also won on his watch. Hammeke was instrumental in FHSU's transition from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in 2006 to its current affiliation with the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), one of the most competitive NCAA Division II conferences nationally. Twenty of the 22 conference titles under Hammeke have been during the Tigers' membership with the MIAA. Current head coaches Chris Brown (football), Mark Johnson (men's basketball), Adrian Pilkington (softball), and Brian Flax (women's tennis), along with former head coaches Tony Hobson (women's basketball), Brett Parker (men's soccer), Craig Shaw (women's soccer), and Chas Thompson (men's wrestling) all set new records for wins at FHSU in their respective sports under Hammeke's guidance.

Fort Hays State served as host of several NCAA postseason events during Hammeke's 21 years of service, several based on the success of Fort Hays State's teams. FHSU was host of the NCAA Central Regional in women's basketball three times after the team earned the No. 1 seed (2015, 2019, 2022). Football hosted an NCAA playoff game in 2017 as the super region's No. 1 seed following an undefeated regular season. Softball also hosted an NCAA regional in 2013 as the No. 1 seed. FHSU was also selected as a regional host in men's wrestling and cross country within the last 21 years.

Fort Hays State Athletics has seen numerous facility upgrades over the past couple of decades thanks to Hammeke's guidance and the generous contributions and donations from the Tiger community. FHSU Soccer Stadium (2011), Schmidt-Bickle Indoor Training Facility (2013), FHSU Track and Field Facility (2016), and the ongoing construction of the Bickle-Schmidt Athletic Complex (projected for late 2025) highlight the new facilities built for Tiger Athletics during his time at the helm. He also orchestrated numerous upgrades to existing facilities, including Lewis Field Stadium, Gross Memorial Coliseum, Larks Park, Fleharty Family Field, and FHSU Tennis Courts. Several of the upgrades include chairback seating for fans, replacement of playing surfaces, videoboards and scoreboards, locker rooms, lighting, fencing, study space for student-athletes, and various other improvements to current infrastructure.

Hammeke has made a huge impact by making a strong connection with members of the Tiger community and working with several individuals who have made generous donations and contributions to FHSU Athletics. He created the existing Difference Makers group for FHSU Athletics, a group of families and individuals who have made major contributions to help fund major upgrades and improvements at FHSU. He was also instrumental in creating the annual Tiger Auction and Dinner, a highly-popular fundraising event among Tiger supporters held each summer. The Tiger Auction and Dinner, currently organized by Assistant Athletic Director Matt Cook, celebrated its 15th year in 2024.

Fort Hays State Athletics has also seen the addition of three new sports during Hammeke's post, which included men's and women's soccer in 2011 and women's wrestling in 2023, going from 16 to 19 intercollegiate sports overall. With the additional sports, Fort Hays State now has over 500 student-athletes competing annually at the NCAA Division II level.

Hammeke has built and provided strong stability for FHSU Athletics in his time at the helm. Five of the current members of the Athletic Administration Staff have served in their roles for at least 11 years, including one spanning two decades. The sports of football, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's wrestling, softball, tennis, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's track and field, and women's golf have all seen tenures of head coaches last more than a decade under Hammeke's guidance. Five of those head coaches are still in their positions today and three of the five have coached at least 20 years at FHSU.

"It is with a profound sense of gratitude and admiration that I recognize Curtis Hammeke's exceptional contributions as our Director of Athletics," said President of Fort Hays State University Dr. Tisa Mason. "Over the past 21 years, Curtis has not only elevated our athletic programs to remarkable heights, but also fostered a deep sense of community and connection with our student-athletes, coaches, and supporters. Hammeke has enjoyed a lifetime of contributions to collegiate athletics in the state of Kansas. Following his graduation from FHSU in 1985, he served as Assistant Baseball Coach and Sports Information Director at Barton (Kan.) Community College from 1987 to 1991. Barton is where his journey as a collegiate student-athlete and administrator began in the early 1980s, surrounding his two years as a student-athlete at Fort Hays State University. Following his five years as head baseball coach at FHSU, Hammeke was Director of Athletics at Great Bend High School for two years and then took his first collegiate Director of Athletics position at Butler (Kan.) Curtis and his wife Annette are blessed with three children, Father Andy Hammeke and Alicia Knight currently residing in Hays, and Nick Hammeke currently residing in Kansas City. All three were student-athletes and graduates of Fort Hays State University and have enjoyed great success in their lives beyond FHSU. Alicia and husband Kegan have four children – Emery, Kollins, Kolter, and Turner, while Nick and wife Olivia have one son – Jack.

"It is with a great sense of gratitude that I reflect on the last 30 years," Hammeke said. "The two cornerstones of my career have been the ongoing growth of my Catholic faith and the supportive presence of my wife Annette. We've been extremely blessed with our children, their spouses, and our grandchildren. Words can't describe what they all mean to us. Beyond faith and family, it is Fort Hays State University that I'm most grateful for. There's a certain degree of apprehension, along with excitement, which coincide with not knowing exactly what the next chapter of our lives will encompass. But regardless, I will cherish forever my time spent here with all the amazing people who work tirelessly on a mission to 'Defend the Fort.'"

Kansas Department of Health and Environment

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment&nbsp;has rescinded a boil water advisory for Countryside Estates Mobile Home Park public water supply system located in Ellis County.

Drinking water samples collected from the Countryside Estates MHP indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination.

&nbsp;The advisory was issued because of a waterline break at the city of Hays resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system.

Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Drinking water samples collected from the Countryside Estates MHP indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved.

Fridays at Victoria Jr./Sr. High School are redefining traditional education. Through learning labs, students gain practical life skills that reach far beyond the classroom.

Dan Rogers, Victoria High assistant principal and athletic director, said the concept stemmed from a workshop he attended at Peabody-Burns High School.

"We have to think differently in terms of learning and what education is to have the kids feel relevant in school because that's a huge problem in today's society," Rogers said.

The effort aims to offer life skills training every Friday for students in grades 7-12, efficiently using the limited resources available in a small school setting.

The learning labs rotate every nine weeks and offer students diverse practical skills, including hunter safety, equine management, culinary arts, guitar and drum lessons, archery, mentorship, German, chess, and plumbing and electrical basics.

"It's been really cool. The vibe is so much better on Friday. The energy is there. Staff are excited to share what they know," he said.

Rogers leads a dance learning lab focused on two-step and swing dance, inspired by students’ interest in learning how to dance.

Teachers are encouraged to share their unique hobbies, skills and passions. Some even provide personal resources to support their workshops, with additional materials supplied by the community.

"Victoria is very willing to support our kids," he said. "The ultimate goal is for our kids to learn skills and then help them out in the process."

Community members can coordinate donations by contacting Victoria High's main office. Previous contributions have included fishing poles and a toilet for plumbing labs.

Additional learning labs include genealogy research, conversational German, creative writing, calligraphy, golf, volunteering at the Humane Society, and knitting and crocheting.

Rogers said the learning labs at Victoria High have brought about a positive shift in the school environment, strengthening relationships between students and staff.

"Our custodians and maintenance staff are teaching labs, building relationships with students in ways we've never seen before," he said.&nbsp;

"We have seniors in the same learning lab as seventh graders. I was a little nervous about how that would go, but it's been great. The whole dynamic of the building has changed," Rogers said.

Since September, the workshops have attracted interest from other schools in the area, which recognize the program as a model for reimagining education.

Rogers said he hopes to develop the labs so students can create and sell goods or services, benefiting the community while helping to fund future labs.

In the meantime, Rogers aims to support students as they request skills the school cannot readily provide, such as auto body and dent removal.

"If there's business owners or retired people in these trades who can donate or give hours of your time a week to teach our students these skills, that would benefit them," he said.
