SEDGWICK COUNTY —Earlier this month, one of the male African elephants, Callee, had a unique dental procedure at the Sedgwick County Zoo.

During a sparring event with Titan, the zoo's other male elephant, Callee broke one of his tusks at the pulp cavity causing bleeding that numerous visitors witnessed from the sidelines. 

The tusk needed to be repaired as soon as possible to prevent further damage and infection. Tusks are similar to teeth, so the zoo called in Dr. Winter, a boarded veterinary dentist who is certified in zoo/wildlife dentistry, to perform a treatment much like a root canal.

According to a social media report from the zoo, the procedure went incredibly well, thanks to everyone involved. "From the Elephant Care Team to Maintenance and our Veterinarian staff, it truly took a team to accomplish."

"In fact, during this procedure, it was National Vet Tech Week, and we had the honor of hosting members of the Association of Zoo Veterinary Technicians here at SCZ for their post-conference trip. Zoo vet techs from across the nation were able to witness a part of this fascinating procedure firsthand."

Dental work helped an elephant at a Kansas zoo

Gamers from across the region gathered at Fort Hays State University for TigerLAN 50 to enjoy the most popular video games of the past 40 years.

The FHSU Esports Club has a two-day event each semester at the Memorial Union. The latest edition, open to all attendees, occurred on Oct. 26 and 27.

FHSU Esports sponsor Kevin Shaffer said TigerLAN is in its 50th iteration, which started off-campus in 2002.

"Way back, they had the event in somebody's basement. It was TigerLan zero, but soon after that, they realized they could use campus space as a club," Shaffer said.

Esports members arranged tables and chairs, organized tournaments and solicited community sponsors for prizes. Participants were also invited to bring their own gaming consoles and computer setups.

The weekend event ran from 11 a.m. to midnight on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

The event featured casual and competitive games such as League of Legends, Quake, Tetris, Rocket League, Minecraft, Warcraft and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a fighting game.

FHSU student Alan Melendez organized the Super Smash Bros. tournament to bring together players from Colorado and eastern Kansas.

"Hays is in the middle. It's five hours from Colorado and five hours from Kansas City, where they can connect and play," Melendez said.

The Smash Bros. tournament featured two smaller brackets for participants: one for individual players and another for teams of two, both structured as elimination brackets.

Supported by entry fees and sponsorships, winners of both brackets could win cash prizes, which varied based on the number of participants.

"The Midwest [competitive] scene is pretty small. I would say it's hard to find good players and to get that practice to get better. You'll want to travel," Melendez said.

Melendez is a senior and said the Esports club strives to represent FHSU at larger Smash Bros. tournaments across the country in the future.

"I want to make an impact on Fort Hays while I'm here," he said.

Shaffer said what sets TigerLAN 50 apart from previous events is the attendance of alums who were also present at the very first TigerLAN.

"They were college students at that time. Now they're bringing their kids to TigerLan," he said.

TigerLAN 50 also offered attendees door prizes such as LEGO sets, swag bags, plushies, computer accessories, a JBL speaker and a Minecraft minifridge.

Sponsors of TigerLAN 50 that contributed prizes included McDonald's, Nex-Tech, Walmart and Golden Belt Bank.

Concessions and beverages were available throughout both days to energize gamers all weekend.

Hackers target your email and social media accounts to steal your personal information. Like your username and password, bank or credit card account numbers, or Social Security number. If they get it, they use it to commit&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/what-know-about-identity-theft">identity theft</a>, spread malware, or scam other people. So, what are signs that someone hacked your account, and how can you recover a stolen account?

Here are some things that might tip you off to a problem:

If you get a notification about activity you don’t recognize, and you&nbsp;can&nbsp;log in, here’s what to do:

Change your account password.&nbsp;Create a unique and&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/creating-strong-passwords-and-other-ways-protect-your-accounts#strong">strong password</a>&nbsp;that is hard to guess. Aim for 12 to 15 characters. Or use a passphrase — a series of words separated by spaces. Then sign out of that account on all devices. That way anyone who’s logged in to your account on another device will get kicked out.

Secure your account.&nbsp;If the account offers&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/use-two-factor-authentication-protect-your-accounts">two-factor authentication</a>&nbsp;(2FA), turn it on to add an extra layer of security. That way, a hacker with your password can’t log in to your account without a second authentication factor. Like a verification code you get by text or email, or from an authenticator app.

Update your account recovery information.&nbsp;Account recovery information helps you get back into your account if you're locked out, forgot your password, or if someone else is using it. Check your account recovery information and make sure the email address and phone number listed are correct.

Check for signs that someone had access to your account.&nbsp;Check if there are auto-forwarding rules in your email account that you didn’t set up. Hackers might create these rules to forward your emails to another address. Check your social media for messages the hacker posted or sent, or for new friends you don’t recognize.

If you believe someone stole your personal information, go to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.identitytheft.gov/">IdentityTheft.gov</a>&nbsp;to report it and get a personalized recovery plan.

CAMPBELL: 2024 K-State crop pest management schools set for Nov. 19-20

ANDOVER - Hays High used a pair of Carter Graham one yard touchdown plunges and a pair of takeaways to build a 12-0 halftime lead and went on to beat Andover 31-0 Friday night in the first round of 5A bracket play..&nbsp;

The first touchdown for Hays capped off a 11-play 68-yard drive that featured a third down and fourth down conversion. The extra point missed with 3:19 left in the first quarter leaving the score at 6-0.

Wyatt Kirkpatrick recovered an Andover fumble to set up the Indians in Trojan territory but Hays lost the ball on downs.

Dalton Meyers then intercepted a Trojan pass that was tipped by Johnny Rigler in the second quarter. Hays turned that into a 10 play 61 yard drive that scored six points on a Graham one yard dive. The extra point was blocked leaving Hays with a 12-0 lead with 5:28 remaining before halftime.

Hays forced a punt and drove inside the Andover 20 but couldn't convert for points, turning the ball over on downs.

The Indians continued to dominate the second half. Andover punted on their first possession. The Indian offense scored eleven plays later on a fourth down and goal play from the eight. Graham found Holden Lind on a pass forced high into the air on heavy defensive pressure. Hays couldn't convert on the two point try and led 18-0.

Andover never got their offense going. Following another punt, Lind raced 84 yards on the first play of the Indian offensive series for a touchdown. The extra point hit the upright and missed leaving the score at 24-0.

Jackson Chartier recovered a fumble at midfield to put Hays in business again. Once again on fourth down Graham found Lind. This time on fourth and ten on a 26 yard pass. Carson Moore nailed the extra point the final difference of 31-0.

Carter Graham threw for 211 yards and two touchdowns. Holden Lind ran for 154 yards and one score. He had 50 receiving yards and two more touchdowns. The Indians totaled 400 yards of offense. Andover gained just 146 yards total. They had 95 rush yards after averaging 320 coming into the game.

Hays improves to 5-4 and will play at Great Bend next Friday. The Panthers are 9-0. Andover ends their season at 4-5.

STERLING – The TMP-Marian Monarchs could not overcome several
big plays by the Sterling Black Bears, and their season came to an end Friday
night with a 48-6 loss in the first round of the 1A playoffs.

The Monarchs offense drove inside the Sterling 30-yard line
on their opening possession, thanks to a 63-yard run by Grant Nehls, but the
drive stalled before Carson Liles threw his first of two interceptions in the
endzone. 

On the Black Bears' first offensive play, Sterling scored on
an 80-yard touchdown run, giving the team a 7-0 lead with just under nine minutes
to play in the first quarter.

TMP was forced into a punt on their second possession and
then forced Sterling to turn it over on downs in their territory. But once
again, after driving inside the Sterling 25-yard-line before turning the ball
over on downs.

Neither team could find their rhythm for most of the second
quarter, with the Monarchs turning it over on turn downs twice. 

Sterling broke on the board for the second time in the first
half on a 69-yard touchdown pass, making it 14-0 Sterling with less than three
minutes to play in the first half.

The Monarchs turned it over on a bad snap on a punt, setting
up a short field for the Black Bears. With less than 30 seconds left in the
first half, the Black Bears scored on an 11-yard pass for a 21-0 lead at
halftime.

Sterling opened the second half with an 80-yard kickoff
return, setting up a two-yard touchdown run two plays later for a 28-0 Sterling
lead.

Sterling added a second, third-quarter touchdown to extend
their lead to 34-0 with just over four minutes remaining in the quarter.

TMP finally broke onto the scoreboard when Liles scored on a
four-yard touchdown run by Liles, making it 34-6 with 2:19 left in the third quarter.
A 41-yard pass to Jacob Seib set up the touchdown.

Sterling added two more fourth-quarter touchdowns on their
way to a 48-6 victory.

Liles finished 6-for-17 with two interceptions.

🏐 FHSU takes out Jets in four sets

MADISON, Wis. (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/kamala-harris">Kamala Harris</a>&nbsp;said Friday it was “disqualifying” for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;to say former Rep.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/liz-cheney">Liz Cheney</a>, one of the former president's most prominent Republican critics, should have rifles “shooting at her” to see how she feels about sending troops to fight.

The Democratic vice president has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kamala-harris-election-2024-gop-c584f9860260f48ddff90ab2dca0433a">campaigned extensively</a>&nbsp;with Cheney, especially in the “blue wall” battleground states that make up her strongest path to victory on Tuesday, while Trump has been going after the former Wyoming congresswoman and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, over the Iraq war and foreign military interventions.

Speaking to reporters after arriving in Madison, Wisconsin, Harris asked voters to consider who they’d prefer sitting in the Oval Office, driving the message she’s been emphasizing in the campaign’s closing week. Harris called Cheney “a true patriot” and said Trump “has increased his violent rhetoric.”

“His enemies list has grown longer. His rhetoric has grown more extreme,” Harris said. “And he is even less focused than before on the needs and the concerns and the challenges facing the American people.”

Trump and his allies say his comments are being misconstrued. They say he was arguing that Cheney is a “war hawk” but would be less supportive of using the military of she had to fight in wars herself.

He doubled down Friday, calling Cheney a “disaster” during a stop at a restaurant in Dearborn, Michigan. “She wouldn’t fight, she is a coward," he said, adding that if she was ever put on a battlefield, “she’d be the first one to chicken out.”

At an event late Thursday in Arizona with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, Trump was asked whether it was strange to see Cheney campaign against him. The former congresswoman has vocally opposed Trump since the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol and endorsed Harris, joining the vice president at recent stops as they try to win over Republicans disaffected with Trump.

Trump called Cheney “a deranged person” and added: “But the reason she couldn’t stand me is that she always wanted to go to war with people. If it were up to her we’d be in 50 different countries.”

The former president continued: “She’s a radical war hawk. Let’s put her with the rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her. OK, let’s see how she feels about it. You know, when the guns are trained on her face.

“You know they’re all war hawks when they’re sitting in Washington in a nice building saying, oh gee, well, let’s send 10,000 troops right into the mouth of the enemy,” Trump said.

Cheney responded Friday in a post on X: “This is how dictators destroy free nations. They threaten those who speak against them with death. We cannot entrust our country and our freedom to a petty, vindictive, cruel, unstable man who wants to be a tyrant.”

One prominent Trump critic, former Republican congressman Joe Walsh, argued the former president's comment had been taken out of context and that Trump was “NOT calling for Liz Cheney to be executed in front of a firing line.”

“In Trump’s typically stupid, ugly fashion, he’s trying to make a point about Cheney’s stance on war,” Walsh said on X.

Ian Sams, a spokesperson for the Harris campaign, suggested that Trump was “talking about sending a prominent Republican to the firing squad, and you have Vice President Harris talking about sending one to her Cabinet. This is the difference in this race.”

Trump said he was making a point about Cheney's foreign policy record.

“She is a war hawk,” he said in Michigan. “If she had to do it herself and she had to face the consequences of battle, she wouldn’t be doing it. So it is easy for her to talk, but she wouldn’t be doing it.”

His spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, said his comments were being taken out of context, calling the controversy “the latest fake media outrage.”

Throughout his campaign, Trump has been fixated on the Americans he believes have wronged or betrayed him. He has portrayed them as worse than the United States' foreign adversaries, referring to them as “enemies from within.”

He's threatened to use the federal government, including the military, to go after them. And he has repeatedly threatened “long term prison sentences” for those “involved in unscrupulous behavior” this election, including political operatives, donors and elected officials.

He said people&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-military-border-civil-unrest-domestic-use-a136c69cc85184b07f161c4c09b46c50">he labeled as “the enemy from within”</a>&nbsp;should be “very easily handled by, if necessary, by National Guard, or if really necessary, by the military.”

Denton Loudermill, falsely accused on social media of being the shooter on Feb. 14 has once again sued state Sens. Rick Brattin, Denny Hoskins and Nick Schroer for defamation and invasion of privacy

Three Republican Missouri state senators — including one running for secretary of state — are once again being sued by the man they incorrectly identified in social media posts as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-super-bowl-parade-shooting-kansas-city-d9f4466b69cbb2dfe0f007414aebe730" target="_blank">being the shooter</a>&nbsp;at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory celebration.

Denton Loudermill of Olathe, Kansas, filed lawsuits Thursday against state Sens. Denny Hoskins of Warrensburg, Rick Brattin of Harrisonville and Nick Schroer of Defiance. In the individual lawsuits, each is accused of violating Loudermill’s privacy and libeling him with their posts.&nbsp;

Hoskins is the GOP nominee for secretary of state. Brattin is seeking re-election in the 31st Senate District. Schroer, who won his seat in the Senate in 2022, is not on the ballot this year.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri. Similar lawsuits against all three men&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2024/10/21/judge-dismisses-case-against-missouri-senators-over-chiefs-parade-shooting-posts/">were dismissed Oct. 21</a>&nbsp;in Kansas federal court when U.S. District Judge John Broomes ruled he did not have jurisdiction over Brattin, Hoskins and Schroer.

In the more than nine months since the Feb. 14 victory parade and pep rally, people have not stopped making him feel uncomfortable, Loudermill said in a news conference with one of his attorneys, LaRonna Lassiter Saunders.

“They come through looking at me, on video on their phone, saying ‘yeah, that’s him,” he said. “That worries me sometimes.”

In an interview with The Independent, Lassiter Saunders said she believes the jurisdictional issue is solved with the new filing. It was important to refile the cases quickly, she said, because the legal nuances could be missed by a public that has only heard the cases were dismissed.

“It’s reported that the case gets tossed, then they’re thinking, there’s some merit to the Missouri senators position,” Lassiter Saunders said.

Hoskins, reached via text message, declined to respond to the new filing.

“I have not been served and I have no comment at this time,” he said.

Brattin and Schroer did not respond to messages seeking comment.

Like thousands of other regional residents, Loudermill went to Union Station in Kansas City for the pep rally that followed the Chiefs’ victory parade after this year’s Super Bowl. As the crowd was departing, an argument in the crowd resulted in gunfire.

The shooting at the end of the victory celebration left one person dead and&nbsp;<a href="https://missouriindependent.com/2024/10/17/kansas-city-super-bowl-rally-shooting-victims-pick-up-pieces-but-gun-violence-haunts-their-lives/">at least 24 people injured</a>.

Loudermill, who was born in Kansas and lives there now, was detained briefly because he was too slow to leave the area of the shooting, he told The Independent earlier this year.

A photo of him, seated, with his hands restrained behind his back, was posted on X, formally known as Twitter, by an account with the name Deep Truth Intel. That post incorrectly identified him with a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-68353305" target="_blank">name associated with misinformation</a>&nbsp;posted after other shootings and said he was an undocumented immigrant.

Soon after that initial social media post, the Missouri Freedom Caucus, Hoskins, Brattin, Schroer and U.S. Rep. Tim Burchett, a Tennessee Republican, posted their own versions, some with the photo, some without. Burchett’s post said he was one of the shooters and referred to him as an “illegal alien.”

Burchett later deleted the tweet but included a screenshot of it&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/timburchett/status/1759645965445636470?s=20" target="_blank">that is still visible</a>&nbsp;in a separate post.

A lawsuit filed against Burchett in Kansas was also dismissed because of jurisdictional issues. Lassiter Saunders said Thursday that she is working with attorneys in the Washington, D.C., area to refile the case against Burchett.

“He is not off the hook,” she said.&nbsp;

Hoskins’ version on social media shared a screenshot of the initial anonymous post and blamed President Joe Biden and political leaders of Kansas City for making the shooting possible.

Brattin’s first post linking Loudermill to the shooting, since deleted, demanded “#POTUS CLOSE THE BORDER” and incorporated the deleted anonymous post that kicked everything off.

Schroer was the least certain post about the immigration and arrest status of Loudermill among the three.

Schroer’s post included a link to one from Burchett stating, over Loudermill’s photo, that “One of the Kansas City Chiefs victory parade shooters has been identified as an illegal Alien.”

“Can we get any confirmation or denial of this from local officials or law enforcement?” Schroer wrote. “I’ve been sent videos or stills showing at least 6 different people arrested from yesterday but officially told only 3 still in custody. The people deserve answers.”

In the complaint filed against Brattin, attorneys wrote that the lawmakers had no reason to make the comments directed at Loudermill.

“The publication of the false representation that plaintiff was an ‘illegal alien’ and a ‘shooter’ was not made in good faith nor was it made by (Brattin) with any legitimate interest in making or duty to make such assertions,” the filing states.

In the Kansas cases, the lawmakers were represented by Attorney General Andrew Bailey, who raised both the jurisdictional objections and claims that the senators were acting in their official capacity when they made their posts on social media. Therefore, the filings stated, they are protected by “legislative immunity.”&nbsp;

When the case was dismissed, Bailey put out a statement saying it was a victory for keeping “questions of Missouri law…in Missouri courts.”

Bailey’s office did not respond immediately to an email asking if the office would again provide representation. Lassiter Saunders said the attorney general should not take the case again.

“I would hope not, but given the track record of the attorney general doing as he pleases, it’s a possibility,” Lassiter Saunders said.

Bailey’s participation in the case generated its own dispute. In a May letter to the commissioner of the Office of Administration, the state agency that certifies payments from Missouri’s legal expense fund, Gov. Mike Parson wrote that no payments related to the lawsuits should be certified “without my approval or a court order.”

Bailey’s claim of legislative immunity is based in the Missouri Constitution’s provisions on legislative privileges. Along with being immune from arrest for minor offenses while the General Assembly is in session, members also “<a href="https://revisor.mo.gov/main/OneSection.aspx?section=III++++19&amp;bid=36212&amp;constit=y" target="_blank">shall not be questioned</a>&nbsp;for any speech or debate in either house in any other place.”

Social media posts are not statements or speeches made during debates in the chambers, Lassiter Saunders said.

“It wasn’t legitimate legislative activity,” she said. “They were following this story like hundreds of thousands of other people seeing tweets, retweeting, and we don’t believe it was the same.

The lawsuit seeks to vindicate a core American principle, the right to be let alone, Lassiter Saunders said.

“I would like to refocus the attention from politics to the principle of, private citizens should have the right to live their lives privately,” she said. “The elected officials need to be mindful and do a better job of not just speaking out because they have the authority to do so.”

The lawsuit states that because of the hostility of some people in the public, Loudermill has “injuries and actual damages including mental distress, sleeplessness, anxiety, and agitation.”

“I’m just getting all the attention still,” he said. “ I just want them to pay for that.”

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement are investigating the death of a child at a home in the Kansas City area

Just after 8p.m. Wednesday, emergency personnel were called to the area of 32nd and Crysler Avenue, according to a social media report from police.

The investigation involved the death of 7-year-old that occurred sometime in the evening hours on Wednesday.&nbsp; 

Police have released no additional details.&nbsp; Check the Post for more information as it becomes available.

Police investigate death of 7-year-old at KC area home

Fort Hays State University's Pi Sigma Alpha organized a political showdown featuring two student-led political groups.

The fifth-annual debate between the FHSU College Republicans and FHSU Young Democrats on Tuesday at the Memorial Union addressed foreign policy,&nbsp;abortion, immigration, gun control and climate change.

 </figure>By TONY GUERRERO Hays PostFort Hays State University's Pi Sigma Alpha organized a political showdown featuring two student-led political groups.The fifth-annual debate between the FHSU College Republicans and FHSU Young Democrats on Tuesday at the Memorial Union addressed foreign policy,&nbsp;abortion, immigration, gun control and climate change.Each team had one minute to respond to the same pre-written question. Teams were allowed one 30-second rebuttal per question.Isaac Hargett, Genesis Wilson, Sarah Braun, and Lily Nash represented the FHSU Young Democrats, and Jackson Sinsel, Mickey Mason, and Hazel Frans represented the FHSU College Republicans.The College Republicans introduced themselves and said their commitment is upholding the Constitution while promoting economic freedom through conservative principles.The Young Democrats introduced themselves and said their commitment is to equal opportunities for all individuals while recognizing the progress achieved during President Joe Biden's administration.<h2>Foreign Policy</h2>The Young Democrats' position on foreign policy and what they called rising authoritarianism is that it is essential to support allies, particularly against Russia and China. Hargett said Trump has fallen short in this regard."America needs to push back on that," Hargett said. "What we need to do is impose our own strong diplomacy with the support of their enemies."Sinsel agreed to support allies abroad, such as Ukraine, Taiwan, and Israel but said there is a need for transparency regarding aid."If we're going to support those countries, we'd like to know where that aid is going and how it's being used," he said.Wilson said the America first movement does not aid diplomacy abroad or combat the spread of authoritarianism, saying there is transparency in using aid."We give older weapons to them that America is no longer using. This also helps us see how our weapons of war are working," she said.Mason said that although supplying older weapons is a point of discussion, issuing "blank checks" requires transparency.<h2>Abortion</h2>Frans of the College Republicans said restricting insurance coverage for abortion services based on personal beliefs is protected by the First Amendment rights."What comes to mind is a Catholic institution if they are hiring and supporting these individuals. It is against Catholic morals to support abortion," she said.Nash of the Young Democrats said employers' women are still going to seek abortions even if there are restrictions on health care access or if abortions are illegal."Catholic people are not the only people who are employing others. It is incredibly important to make abortion safe and readily available," Nash said.Nash mentioned the case of Amber Nicole Thurman, who passed away after taking abortion pills in Georgia, where laws prohibit the procedure after roughly six weeks.Frans of the College Republicans said Thurman's tragic case resulted from taking two pills as well as not receiving a procedure to remove tissue from her uterus."This is due to abortion laws being very vague. If there are going to be abortion laws, they need to be simple enough for everyone to understand them and so that doctors do not hesitate to provide care in terms of the life of the mother," Frans said.Wilson of the Young Democrats added that millions of Americans depend on job-related health care, and being denied an abortion based on personal views could also result in the denial of other essential medical care.<h2>Immigration</h2>The Young Democrats said utilizing military resources for border and immigration is necessary during times of crisis. However, it should not be used for mass deportations and must be implemented humanely."Having the military at the border at times is super helpful for our country and helps us not become a failing country," Wilson of the Young Democrats said. "We should not use it to cage people, separate people from their families and children from their mothers."Mason of the College Republicans said the border should be well-structured, and the military is commonly used to combat cartels."Anytime that there are military weapons used by the other side, our people need to be able to act effectively against that," he said.Wilson of the Young Democrats agreed military use is appropriate in that situation but said Republicans, including Donald Trump, seek to use the military for mass deportations."We agree with [College Republicans], but the plan actual Republicans in Congress have do not align with that," she said.Sinsel of the College Republicans said although deportation may cost millions of dollars, the primary focus should be on securing the border and dismantling cartels and trafficking rings.<h2>Guns</h2>Sinsel said the College Republicans' position on mental health relating to guns varies, but they do support common-sense gun restrictions.Frans of the College Republicans said removing firearms from individuals with mental health issues would not stop them from inflicting harm."If they want to hurt somebody, they will use whatever they can. Gun violence is awful, but taking guns away will not stop all violence," she said.Braun said the Young Democrats all agree guns should not be confiscated, but there should be laws in place to prevent more significant harm."People with mental health issues who want to hurt others will continue to hurt people, but they can hurt a lot fewer people with a knife than they can with a very large gun," Braun said.Wilson said Democrats support the Affordable Care Act, while Trump and other Republicans advocate for its repeal, emphasizing that it helps Americans access mental health resources.<h2>Climate Change</h2>Braun of the Young Democrats said the government should start enacting legislation to reduce carbon emissions, warning that we are five years away from a point of no return."A way we can do this that won't harm citizens or impact their lives is the Inflation Reduction Act," she said. "Biden had a part in it that allowed for tax credits that would reduce the amount of money people owed if they invested in renewable energy."Frans of the College Republicans said she does not necessarily support government regulations and would prefer to see governments invest in their own clean, renewable resources."This can be something that the government takes charge of as an example rather than being hypocritical and using their own nonrenewable energy," Frans said.Hargett of the Young Democrats said the lack of regulation in energy sectors can become harmful, as the low costs of oil and gas for companies negatively impact the economy."It's not the state doing it. It's the companies causing that change in the climate we're seeing," he said.Frans of the College Republicans said the government funds most scientific research and can develop methods to reduce costs and enhance the efficiency of renewable energy, which can be shared with American companies and businesses.Audience members also had the opportunity to ask both teams questions.<h2>Department of Education</h2>The College Republicans said they favor reducing the Department of Education's involvement instead of abolishing it, as Trump has advocated. They also said they support school choice and believe states should determine how to manage their education systems.The Young Democrats said they opposed abolishing the Department of Education, arguing it could eliminate essential programs like FAFSA. They also stated that school choice leads to the defunding of already struggling public schools.<h2>Inflation</h2>The Young Democrats said inflation is stabilizing and not at the same level as last year, with wages outpacing it. They attribute rising wages and grocery costs to corporate greed and say Vice President Kamala Harris has a plan to prevent companies from engaging in price gouging.The College Republicans said gas and grocery prices are high. They questioned why Harris had not implemented a plan to address inflation, considering her position and close relationship with the Biden administration.<h2>Legalizing marijuana</h2>The College Republicans said they support legalizing marijuana for taxation purposes to fund roads and education but have skepticism, noting that Colorado had similar intentions. Yet, the results do not reflect that success.The Young Democrats said they advocate for the decriminalization of marijuana to support marginalized communities rather than legalization, as they are also skeptical about the effectiveness of tax revenue and its allocation for infrastructure.<h2>Extremism</h2>The Young Democrats said extremism exists in both parties, highlighting that far-right extremism is a danger to society. They cite groups like the Proud Boys and the KKK, which they say emerge in local communities due to a lack of political dialogue.The College Republicans said both parties exhibit tendencies toward extremism but say that such extremism is more prevalent in national politics rather than at the local level while still condemning it regardless.Both student organizations said voting is a powerful means for change and an opportunity for students to influence their futures and the policies that impact their lives.The attendance in the Cody Commons room at the Memorial Union was roughly half of its maximum capacity.You can follow <a href="https://www.instagram.com/college.republicans.fhsu/?utm_medium=copy_link">FHSU College Republicans</a> and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/fhsu.youngdems/">Young Democrats</a> on Instagram.<figure>
