Lavila Elizabeth Meyer,&nbsp;age 79,
former Flasher, North Dakota resident passed away peacefully Friday, February
14, 2025, at Via Christi Village Care Center, Hays, Kansas.

She was born October 27, 1945, in Mandan, ND to Anton &amp; Isabel (Brilz)
Unser.&nbsp; She married Herman E. Meyer at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Mandan
on April 24, 1964.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on March 30, 2022.

&nbsp;Lavila and her husband were ranchers outside of Flasher, North Dakota, on the
Diamond Lazy M Ranch raising sheep and cattle until their move to Via Christi
Village in 2020.

She attended schools in Mandan, ND and graduated from Mandan Senior High School
in 1963.

Lavila was active with the North Dakota Cattlewomen's Association, North Dakota
Cow Belles,&nbsp;Rodeo Secretary, and the American Legion Auxiliary.&nbsp; Plus
many numerous groups and activities.&nbsp; She was an avid bowler, and was
always there for her children's games and activities. She was also known to
always have food for anyone who stopped by.&nbsp; Lavila was a wonderful
cook.

Lavila is survived by her Children, Shelly Lippert and husband Tom, Hays,
KS; Christie Scholl and husband, Ken. Peyton, CO; six grandchildren, Briony
(Justin) Janisse; Tyler (Brittney) Patzner; Karna (Brandon) Prime; Trina (Matt)
Nipe; Travis (Kayla) Patzner; Taylor Patzner; &nbsp;nine great grandchildren,
Landon Janisse; Brynn Janisse; Kennedy Patzner; Lillian Prime; Corbin Prime;
Kendric Nipe; Hazel Nipe; Abigail Nipe; Oliver Patzner; her four bonus
grandchildren, Michelle Lippert; Chelsea (John) Moore; Cameron (Kelly) Lippert;
her eight bonus great grandchildren, her sister, Darlene Fleck; her
sister-in-law, Maryn Unser; numerous sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law on the
Meyer side; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Anton and Isabel Unser; her husband,
Herman E. Meyer; her son,&nbsp;Ross William Meyer; her parents, her brothers
Lloyd Unser and Dean Unser; and her two grandsons, Austin Patzner and Tanner
Patzner.

&nbsp;A Celebration of Life and visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. Monday,
February 17, 2025, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays with Pastor Jim
Winterstein, officiating.

WICHITA, Kan. – Fort Hays State put an end to its four-game slide in road games on Saturday with a 76-68 win at Fugate Gymnasium. Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;led the Tigers to victory with a season-high 32-point performance. The Tigers improved to 16-8 overall and 9-6 in the MIAA, while the Jets moved to 13-12 overall and 6-10 in the MIAA.

Hammeke scored 10 of Fort Hays State's first 12 points of the game. He had 12 points by halftime and then dropped 20 in the second half. It was his fifth game of 30 or more points and first since scoring 35 at Missouri Southern on February 18, 2023 and four off his career high.

The first half was a back-and-forth battle with neither team leading by more than five points. The scoring pace was up tempo early as the teams played to an 18-18 tie over the first 7:30 of action. However, the Tigers were able to slow the game down into their typical pace of play and only 16 points were scored between the teams the rest of the half. Newman held a 27-25 lead at the break.

The Tigers scored the first nine points of the second half to take a 34-27 lead. FHSU held onto its lead the remainder of the game, but had to fight off several bursts by Newman. The Jets cut the lead to three twice before an 8-1 run by the Tigers pushed the lead to 10. The Jets chipped it back to five twice before the Tigers pushed it to 10 again with 7:08 to play. The Jets immediately answered with a pair of 3-point field goals, getting the margin down to four, but Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;had the answer to get it back to nine after splashing a pair of 3-point field goals from the right wing. He then made a pair of free throws to get the lead to 11, FHSU's largest, with 2:52 to play. Six points was all the closer Newman could get the rest of the way.

Hammeke&nbsp;finished 11-of-18 from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 at the free-throw line, playing all 40 minutes of the game. He also dished out a team-high five assists. Dan Makuna&nbsp;matched his career-high in points with 16 off the bench, going 7-of-11 from the field. Traejon Davis&nbsp;finished with nine points and Lucas Hammeke&nbsp;added eight off the bench. FHSU shot 47.4 percent from the field as a team and held Newman to 38.6 percent.

Aaron Murphy led Newman with 21 points, while Thatcher McClure had 11 and Jayden Schoen had 10.Fort Hays State will now play three-straight games at home with only four games remaining in the regular season overall. 

The Tigers play host to Missouri Southern on Thursday and then Pittsburg State on Saturday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🏀 Big day from Hammeke helps Tigers turn back Jets

PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Fort Hays State track and field team concluded competition at the 10th Annual Russ Jewett Indoor Gorilla Classic on Saturday, delivering several standout performances, including multiple NCAA Division II provisional marks.

The Tigers excelled in the pole vault invite, with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/jacob-clark/8482">Jacob Clark</a>&nbsp;clearing 16-8.00 to secure first place and earn an NCAA DII provisional mark.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/brady-deges/8485">Brady Deges</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/josiah-ball/8526">Josiah Ball</a>&nbsp;tied for third place, each clearing 15-8.25, also achieving the provisional standard.

Fort Hays State will return to action next weekend as they continue preparations for the MIAA Championships, set for Feb. 28-Mar. 2. With multiple top performances and provisional marks secured at the Gorilla Classic, the Tigers aim to build momentum heading into the Loper Tune-Up on Feb. 21.

RUSSELL - Norton edged out Oakley by three points in the 3-2-1A Girls West Regional. The two-day tournament was hosted by Russell.

The top eight placers will wrestle in Hays at the State Tournament February 28th and March 1st.

Norton qualified nine wrestlers on their way to the team championship. Kaison Miller who is ranked number one in all classes and hasn't lost to a Kansas opponent was champion at 115 pounds. She pinned all four of her opponents. Halle Pfannenstiel, who has just two losses on the season, won 140 pounds. Cadence Greeson won 190 pounds. Like Miller and Pfannenstiel she has just two losses.

WICHITA, Kan. - The seventh-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team used a dominant second half to pull away from Newman on Saturday, winning 77-36 at Fugate Gymnasium. The Tigers improve to 22-2 on the year and 13-2 in MIAA with the win while the Jets are now 7-18 overall and 2-14 in league action.

After shooting just 32.4 percent from the floor in the first half (12-of-37), the Tigers knocked down 60-percent from the floor after the intermission (18-of-30) to cruise to the win.

The Tigers dominated from the jump, scoring the first 13 points while holding the Jets scoreless for more than five minutes. Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;scored the first six points for FHSU before Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;scored the next seven.

After missing their first five shots and turning the ball over four times, the Jets finally broke through by scoring six in a row to pull within 13-6. Talexa Weeter&nbsp;ended the run with a 3-pointer, giving the Tigers a 16-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. The sophomore proceeded to score five points in the first 76 seconds of the second quarter, going on an 8-0 run herself to push the lead to 21-6.

The teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter, with FHSU leading 28-15 at halftime. The Tigers then matched that point total in the third quarter, outscoring the Jets 28-13 to push the lead to 56-28. FHSU pulled away thanks to a 20-3 run midway through the frame where the Tigers hit 8-of-12 from the floor while holding the Jets to 1-of-5 shooting and creating four turnovers.

Fort Hays State continued to pour it on in the fourth quarter, outscoring the home team 21-8 to push the lead as high as 41 points.

Newman's point total was its lowest of the season. The Tigers finished the game shooting 44.8 percent (30-of-67) while holding the Jets to 26.8 percent shooting (15-of-56). FHSU outrebounded the Jets by 15, including 14 offensive rebounds. The Tigers scored a season-high 23 second-chance points off those offensive rebounds. FHSU also scored 25 points off 17 Newman turnovers and scored 14 points in transition.

Weeter led all scorers with 17 points in less than 20 minutes of action, while DeGarmo totaled 16 points and 10 rebounds for her second-straight double-double. Hollenbeck racked up 15 points, while Kate Dilsaver&nbsp;accumulated eight points, eight rebounds, four assists, four steals and one block.

The Tigers will play their next three games at home beginning Thursday (Feb. 20) when FHSU hosts Missouri Southern beginning at 5:30 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fort Hays State returns to action on Saturday at Newman University in its second-to-last road contest of the regular season. The Tigers are looking to snap a recent string of losses in road contests, which reached four games on Thursday night at Emporia State. The Tigers enter at 15-8 overall and 8-6 in the MIAA, while the Jets are 13-11 overall and 6-9 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State is coming off a 58-44 loss to Emporia State on Thursday evening in Emporia. The Tigers lead the nation in scoring defense and held the Hornets to right at their season average (58.6) of points surrendered per game, but struggled offensively and saw the Hornets coast to a victory in the second half.

Newman enters Saturday on a three-game losing skid overall. The Jets fell to Nebraska-Kearney at home on Wednesday evening by a score of 79-66 and prior to that took road losses to Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State. The Jets are 9-4 at home so far this season and Saturday will be their second-to-last home contest in the regular season.

Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;leads the Tigers at 14.6 points and 4.0 assists per game. He is now six points shy of 1,900 for his career, already the all-time leading scorer in FHSU Men's Basketball history. Kyle Grill&nbsp;is the only other Tiger averaging double figures in scoring at 12.1 per game. Shaun Riley&nbsp;leads the Tigers in rebounding at 6.7 per game.

The seventh-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team wraps up an in-state road trip Saturday when the Tigers take on the Newman Jets in Wichita. First tip is slated for 1:30 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.

Fort Hays State picked up its eighth-straight win on Thursday, defeating Emporia State 70-52 to move to 21-2 on the year and 12-2 in MIAA action. This is the 14th season in a row that the Tigers have reached 20 wins, the longest active streak in Division II and tied for fifth-longest across all NCAA divisions.

Now with 1,797 career points, Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;climbed into fourth on the all-time scoring list at FHSU on Thursday. The Tigers currently have two of the four best scorers in program history on the roster, with Katie DeGarmo&nbsp;second with 2,102 points in her career.

Brooke Loewe&nbsp;dished out six more assists in the win over the Lady Hornets, giving the junior 159 assists on the season. That total is second-most in a single season in program history and is just seven away from tying the school record of 166 assists in a season (Kristi Leeper-Meis, 1990-91). Loewe ranks second in DII in total assists and is fourth in the country with an average of 7.2 assists per game.

The Tigers added another double-digit win on Thursday, FHSU's 19th win by 10 or more points this season. Eleven of those wins have been by 20 or more points, helping the Tigers to a scoring margin of plus-18.6 which ranks ninth in Division II.FHSU also ranks second in the country in assist/turnover ratio (1.40), third in assists per game (19.0), ninth in field goal percentage (46.0) and ninth in winning percentage (.913).

Bailey Wilborn&nbsp;knocked down a trio of 3-pointers in Thursday's win in Emporia, doing so for a team-best third time this season. The senior transfer has hit seven of her last 15 attempts from behind the arc over the last five games (46.7 percent).

Kate Dilsaver&nbsp;scored in double figures for the 13th time this season against the Lady Hornets. She is averaging 9.3 points per night as a senior after putting up an average of 4.1 points per contest in her first three seasons as a Tiger.

Fort Hays State is 26-1 all-time against Newman, including wins in each of the last 16 meetings. That is FHSU's longest active winning streak against a current MIAA rival. A short agenda Thursday for the Hays City Commission was highlighted with updates of the R9 long-term water supply project for the cities of Hays and Russell.&nbsp;

John Braun, project manager, told commissioners the <a href="https://www.haysusa.com/DocumentCenter/View/6799/R9-Key-Map-for-website">route survey</a> for the 63-mile-long planned&nbsp;pipeline from the Edwards County ranch to just south of Hays is finished.

The pipeline will be constructed following county roadways in Edwards, Pawnee, Rush and Ellis counties.&nbsp;A fair market value assessment of compensation to be offered to landowners is currently underway.

Pipeline design is about 60% completed, with 90% completion expected in May.

Braun also reviewed the status of potential outside funding sources for the $140 million project, including grants, low-interest loans, bonds and technical assistance.&nbsp;

Chris Smith, R9 property manager, talked about last year's successful participation in the state's walk-in hunting area program.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Informational billboards about the hunting program and the ranch have QR codes encouraging visitors to shop in Edwards County and Hays.

Smith said compilations from the Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau showed an 18% increase in sales tax revenue for Edwards County over the prior year.

"That's what we want," said Commissioner Shaun Musil. "The city of Hays is giving to that area, not taking away from it. ... This is a regional project, and Kinsley is part of our region."

City Manager Toby Dougherty updated the commission on the regulatory and legal proceedings regarding scheduling the water transfer hearing with the state panel.

"We hope they set that very soon so we can get moving with this project," Dougherty said.

"We're very confident they're going to approve the transfer application, which has already been approved by the hearing officer."

In other business, commissioners approved the purchase of a replacement media filter for the wastewater reclamation and reuse plant.&nbsp;The bid of $48,087 from Evoqua Water Technologies, Waukesha, Wisconsin, is below the $70,000 budget.

They also heard a 2024 year-in-review presentation for the Ellis County Historical Society from Amanda Rupp, executive director. The nonprofit organization receives city funding.

Rupp also talked about projects the museum will undertake in 2025.

Finance Director Kim Rupp reviewed the city's December financial statement.

Overall, sales tax revenues were up about 1% in 2024, which was in line with the budget.&nbsp;Total expenditures finished the year $281,000 under budget. 

A 40-minute executive session was called to discuss personnel matters related to non-elected personnel as well as those related to the financial affairs or trade secrets of corporations, partnerships, trusts, or individual proprietorships.

No action was taken following the executive session.&nbsp;

Hays commission updated on R9 Ranch work; water project awaiting transfer panel hearing

The Hays Public Library is inviting all ages to participate in a reading challenge, Book Mania!

This reading challenge will be set up like a basketball tournament with each level having four brackets to complete. It’s designed to encourage kids to read a variety of books that match their reading level, and this year the tournament will be expanded to include adults.

Bracket play will begin on February 24th and end on March 31st. Participants will read books in their recommended reading level bracket and vote for their favorite. The four brackets do not have to be completed in order. Each bracket that is completed will be turned in as one raffle entry.

The reading level divisions are Toddler-Pre-K, Kindergarten-2nd Grade (picture or chapter books), 3rd-5th Grade, 6th-8th Grade, 9th-12th Grade, and Adult. The library collaborated with teachers to include books that students are encouraged to read.

After the March 31st deadline to turn in all brackets, participants will vote on the overall champion book for their reading level and receive another raffle entry. Voting will be done on April 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, at the Hays Public Library.

A Championship Celebration will be held on April 4th. The celebration will include games and snacks. A raffle winner will be drawn for each division. You do not have to be present to win the division prizes.

The books and brackets for adults will be on the main floor. Materials for the youth divisions will be displayed on the 2nd floor. The brackets also indicate which books can be accessed through the library’s digital resources. HAYS - Hays High and Liberal met up for their second Western Athletic Conference matchup of the season on Friday night at Hays High School. The meeting took place more than two months after the two opened league play in December.

GIRLS: #4-5A Hays 65, #9-6A Liberal 32 The girls game featured two state ranked teams just like in the December matchup. Hays used an 11-0 first quarter run to take the lead for good in a 65-32 victory.

It was a fight early. The game was tied at two and four then the Redskins took a 7-4 advantage and led at 9-7 midway through the first quarter.

Hays answered with a bucket to tie the game and launch an 11-0 run that gave the Indians an advantage they never gave back. Through the second four minutes of the first quarter the Indians outscored Liberal 15-4 for a 22-13 lead.

Hays continued to push the lead in the second quarter. A 12-0 run following a Redskin basket put the Indians ahead 34-15. Hays led by 20 twice in the second quarter, including a 41-21 lead at halftime.

Liberal scored the first point of the third quarter on a free throws. Hays scored the next ten points to lead 51-22. The Indians led by as many as 32 points in the third quarter and by 29 going to fourth 57-28.

A Hays basket thirty seconds in the fourth quarter enacted a continues fourth quarter that ended with a 65-32 Indian victory.

The 65 points scored by Hays(16-0, 5-0) is right on their average for the season. The Indians now have a two game lead and the tiebreaker over Liberal(12-6, 4-2) in the conference standings. The Indians have won 16 consecutive WAC games.

Molly Martin moved past Melissa Beyer for third all-time scoring at Hays High with 965 points.

Hays trailed twice early at 3-0 and 8-7. A traditional three point play gave the Indians a lead at 10-8 when Liberal tied the game up at ten. The next three minutes belonged to the Indians as they scored the next eight points for an 18-10 lead. Liberal scored the final points of the first for an 18-12.

The Indians' defense clamped down in the second quarter. Hays used a 11-4 run over the final 5:27 of the half to extend their lead out to 32-18 at half.

Hays opened the second half on a 19-1 run to put any doubt in the outcome away with a lead of 51-19. Liberal's first field goal of the third quarter came with 2:30 left in the frame. Hays led by as many as 36 in third quarter and 59-26 heading to the fourth.

A continuous clock fourth quarter kept the scoring to a minimum. The Indians still outscored Liberal 8-4 for the 67-30 victory.&nbsp;

Hays(9-7, 4-1) has won 16 straight games against the Redskins. Liberal(3-15, 0-6) has lost 31 consecutive WAC games.

Hays hosts McPherson on Monday in make-up games from earlier in the week.

GOLDEN, Colo. - The Fort Hays State baseball team picked up a doubleheader split on the road against Colorado School of Mines on Friday, falling 6-3 in the opener before rallying with a 14-12 win in the nightcap. The Tigers are now 5-4 on the year, while the Orediggers move to 3-7 overall.

The Tigers accumulated 23 hits on the day, including a season-high 16 base knocks in the second game.

FHSU will open a 36-game conference series next weekend (Feb. 21-23) when the Tigers travel to Fort Smith, Ark. to take on conference newcomer Arkansas-Fort Smith.

GAME 1: Colorado School of Mines 6, Fort Hays State 3 The Tigers rallied from an early deficit to take a 3-1 lead in the opener before the Orediggers scored the final five runs in the contest to secure the win.

The Tigers had their leadoff man on in the eighth with a Woolwine single before the next six batters were retired to end the game. Mines outhit the Tigers by two, 9-7, while FHSU pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts compared to seven by Oredigger hurlers.

GAME 2: Fort Hays State 14, Colorado School of Mines 12 Fort Hays State took an early lead in the second contest when DeGarmo led off with a home run to center field. Three doubles helped the Orediggers take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame before Moore put the Tigers back on top in the third with a two-run home run to right center.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/cade-flaherty/8420">Cade Flaherty</a>&nbsp;bounced back by retiring the side in order in the third and then posted another scoreless inning in the fourth, giving the offense an opportunity to add to its lead.

The Tigers did just that with two more runs in the fourth and a five-spot in the top of the fifth. Two hits and three errors allowed FHSU to score twice in the fourth, including an RBI single from Ayala and a sacrifice fly from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/cooper-howell/8459">Cooper Howell</a>.

Fort Hays State pushed the lead to 10-2 with five runs on five hits and one error in the fifth. FHSU fell to Oklahoma Baptist 2-0 in its first contest of the day, but bounced back for a 6-2 win over Southern Arkansas. FHSU is now 3-3 overall for the season.

Oklahoma Baptist 2, Fort Hays State 0 The Tigers and Bison were locked in a pitching duel throughout the first contest of the day.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/softball/roster/savanah-egger/8183">Savanah Egger</a>&nbsp;was in the circle for FHSU, while Jaycee Shaffer threw for OBU. Shaffer came out on the winning end after a 2-run home run that snuck just inside the left field foul pole produced the only two runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
