Center . 

She was born March 29, 1933, to Joseph C. and Catherine (Paul) Weigel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Friday, October 17, 2025, at
The Basilica of Saint Fidelis, 900 Cathedral Ave, Victoria, Kansas with
Celebrant, Father Curtis Carlson O.F.M. Cap.

Burial will be in Saint Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, Kansas.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday, and from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M.
Friday, at The Basilica of Saint Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas.

A vigil service will be at 6:30 P.M. Thursday, followed by a Victoria V.F.W.
Auxiliary Memorial Service, and a Victoria Christian Mothers /Daughters of
Isabella Rosary all at The Basilica of Saint Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas.

Jon
F. Kisner, age 83 of Hays, Kansas passed away on Thursday, September 25,
2025.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was born on September 27, 1941, in Abilene, Kansas to Fred 'Fritz' and Angela (Dreiling) Kisner.&nbsp;&nbsp;He married Barbara Kay
(VonFeldt) on September 4, 1970, at Victoria, Kansas. She preceded him in death
on September 21, 2020.


&nbsp;Jon was a social and adventurous youngster.&nbsp; As a toddler, he took
numerous solo train rides from Abilene to visit family in other Kansas towns,
like Chapman. He would ride his tricycle off the barn onto the haystacks below.
According to a newspaper article, Jonny (3.5yrs old) &amp; Frankie (6yrs old)
were rough playing that landed them in the hospital with severe cuts from a
glass sliding door, requiring 18 stitches to his arm. It was also rumored Jon
and his buddies would throw farm eggs at his girl cousins (some who went on to
become Nuns). Fun fact, his babysitter in Abilene was Ida; President Ike
Eisenhower’s mother.&nbsp;Then, when Jon was about five years old, his family
moved to Hays.&nbsp; Here he performed as a member in an acrobat trio at the Strand.&nbsp;
The Kisner family lived in the Guard Block House at Old Fort Hays.&nbsp; While
his father was the grounds caretaker, Jon would swim the watering holes
recovering golf balls for his mom to resell in the clubhouse. They were the
last family to live on Old Fort Hays.

Through some high school years, Jon managed the Hays Municipal swimming pool,
where he taught many how to swim. In 1959, he graduated from Saint Joseph
Military Academy, now Thomas Moore Prep High School.&nbsp; A veteran of the US
Army, Jon was an SP4 in 25th&nbsp;Infantry Division, mostly
stationed in Thailand and Hawaii.&nbsp; He was briefly stationed at Fort Leslie
J McNair in Washington as a member of the Presidential Honor Guard where he
earned both the opportunity to attend the US Military Academy Preparatory School
for West Point and to honorably walk at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.&nbsp;
Although he declined both prestigious offers, he was honorably discharged in
1963 and awarded a Good Conduct Medal.

Ready to explore his new bachelor life, Jon bought a cabin in Estes Park,
Colorado and soon purchased his first horse, Lady. Much manual labor was
invested in his new retreat including building a Pot Belly stove for
heat.&nbsp; Family and friends all came to stay, where they would be
wholesomely entertained with Jons’ musical talents.&nbsp; During this time, Jon
periodically visited his parents back in Hays.&nbsp; He would escort his mother
to frequent live music events.&nbsp; As his entertaining bug grew stronger, Jon
discovered his passion for Polka music. For the next 40 years, Jon was
identified as a member of Eddie Basgall and His Jolly Dutchmen, he was
described on an album cover as 'A triple talent entertainer with his singing,
banjo playing and a&nbsp;flair for showmanship. Ballads and&nbsp;happy songs
were Jon’s specialty. His rich baritone vocals enhanced the romantic mood of
the group.' He also returned to work part time at the Hays swimming pool.&nbsp;
While selling beach towels to a local liquor store, he came across his future
wife (Barbara) who he married nine months later in Saint Fidelis Catholic
Church, Victoria, Kansas 'The Cathedral of the Plains'.

Although Jon and Barbara began their future in Colorado, they soon moved to
Victoria, Kansas for a number of years and began raising their three children.
In 1980, Jon graduated from Fort Hays State University with a BA in General
Studies. He also began his&nbsp;36 year&nbsp;career as a lineman and foreman
for Central Kansas Power, now Midwest Energy. In 1985, Jon secured their
growing Kisner family 80 acres of land just north of Toulon where the family
joined labor forces to build their settlement.&nbsp; Always an avid horse
lover, Jon was eventually equipped to open the property to board and train
horses including his own team of Belgians (Duke &amp; Dolly).&nbsp; He loved to
share this majestic team with the community by entering parades, hosting
hayrack rides, chauffeuring wedding parties and sponsoring Christmas light
tours through the Hays Country Club.&nbsp; His added craftsmanship was
showcased thru repairing and building a number of harnesses, trailers, buggies
and wagons.

&nbsp;Once the grandkids were born in Texas, Jon &amp; Barbara moved to be
closer to them for a few years, only to return to their roots in Hays in
2016.&nbsp; After 50 years of marriage, his wife Barbara passed and was
reunited with her parents at St Fidelis Cemetery in Victoria. Jon remained in
his Hays home and stayed active including meeting with his retired Midwest
Energy coworkers for donuts, Military Academy classmates at McDonalds and horse
boarding members sporadically. Jon was a member of the Victoria V.F.W. Post #
1751, and a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, Kansas.

Jon is survived by his children, Curtis Kisner and wife, Michelle, Fort Worth,
TX; Tonya Kisner, Belton, MO; Simone Anderson, Fort Worth, TX; his
grandchildren, Aubrianna Kisner; Cadence Anderson; Carmyn Anderson; his sister,
Janell Newton and husband, Gary, Wichita, KS.

Jon is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Angela Kisner; his wife,
Barbara; his sister, Cynthia Karlin and her husband, Jerry.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, October 18, 2025, at
The Basilica of Saint Fidelis, 900 Cathedral Ave, Victoria, Kansas, with

REXFORD – McCarty Family Farms has been honored as the 2025 Dairy Producers of the Year at World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. 

The award, presented on October 1, recognizes the McCarty family’s long-standing commitment to producing high-quality milk while advancing animal welfare, regenerative farming practices, and community stewardship.

Owned and operated by fourth-generation dairymen Ken, Mike, Dave, and Clay McCarty, with their father Tom McCarty playing a key role in the operation, the family farm exemplifies the balance between innovation and tradition. 

Having established their roots in Pennsylvania in 1914 and relocating their operation to northwest Kansas with the opening of their dairy in 2000, the McCartys have grown into one of the most respected dairy families in the nation, overseeing the world’s largest registered herd of Holsteins. The McCartys operate five dairy sites: three in Kansas, one in Nebraska, and a partnership dairy, MVP Dairy, in Ohio.

McCarty Family Farms North, located in Rexford, is their newest location, completed in 2023, and stands as their most innovative dairy facility to date. 

Eight inverted six-row, tunnel-ventilated free-stall barns house 10,000 Holsteins, which are milked on two 120-stall carousels. Each stall is sand-bedded, and more than 95% of the sand is reclaimed and reused through a flush system and solids separation process. 

The site is also home to the newest addition to McCarty Family Farms’ sustainability efforts—an anaerobic digester. This system processes approximately 260,000 gallons of manure daily, breaking it down into methane gas that is injected into a nearby utility company pipeline. The remaining liquids and solids are repurposed as nutrient-rich fertilizer.

McCarty Family Farms has also invested heavily in on-site processing. In 2012, the family established an evaporative milk condensing plant, marking the beginning of their direct relationship with Danone North America. To support continued growth, the processing plant was expanded and upgraded in 2023 with the addition of ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis technologies. Today, McCarty Family Farms produces Non-GMO Project Verified milk exclusively for Danone North America.

Beyond their commitment to responsible farming, the McCartys also prioritize education and transparency through the Judy McCarty Dairy Learning Center, established in 2024 and named in honor of their late mother. The 8,000-square-foot nonprofit center connects visitors to the story of dairy, from soil to yogurt cup. Guests can view the farm’s 120-cow carousel parlor, ride a guided shuttle through the barns, and explore interactive displays. Serving the community and the agricultural industry, the Learning Center provides research projects, internships, and leadership experiences for the next generation of agricultural leaders.

HAYS - Fort Hays State had a scoop and score touchdown to take their first lead of the game but it was an interception by Central Oklahoma returned to the one yard line which set up the go-ahead score that lifted the Bronchos to a 21-14 win over the Tigers in front of 4,719 at Lewis Field Saturday night.

The Tigers (4-3, 3-2 MIAA) took thier only lead in the third quarter when Taderian Partee recoverd a fumble following a high snap over UCO quarterback Jett Huff's head and rumbled 69 yards for a touchdown to put FHSU up 14-7. The Bronchos (3-3, 3-2 MIAA) quickly seized back the momentum 27 seconds later when UCO running back Dev Matthews ran 62 yards for a touchdown to even the score 14-14.

The Tigers moved the ball into UCO territory early in the fourth quarter, but defensive back Bryant Coley intercepted a Caleb Heavner pass and returned it 65 yards to the FHSU 1-yardline. Two plays later, Huff found tight end Dominique Dunn for a two-yard touchdown pass, which proved to be the game winner.

The game was tightly contested throughout with the score tied at the end of each of the first three quarters. After a scoreless first quarter, UCO got on the board with a 37-yard touchdown pass from Huff to Ashton Schumann at 8:53. The Tigers drove 75 yards on their next possession and tied the game on a Heavner 24-yard touchdown pass to&nbsp; tight end Cale Cormaney.

Heavner finished with 212 passing yards for FHSU. Curtis Douglas ran for a team-high 72 yards and Cale Cormaney hauled in nine passes for 93 yards. FHSU had 348 yards of total offense. John Johnson led the FHSU defense with 16 tackles, while Parrish Terry added nine tackles that included a sack.

The Bronchos rushed for 223 yards as a team and had a pair of 100-yard rushers. William Mason finished with 123, while Mattews added 105. Huff finished with 161 passing yards and Schumann was his top target with six catches for 61 yards. Jack Puckett led UCO with 11 tackles, which included a pair of sacks.

Fort Hays State travels to Northwest Missouri State next Saturday. The Bearcats are 5-1 overall and lead the MIAA at 4-0 following a victory Saturday at Central Missouri. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. in Maryville.

Mae Schamberger, 89, of Hoxie, KS passed away October 8, 2025, at the AmberMed-
Sheridan County LTCU. She was born March 9, 1936, near Vincent, KS to Theodore
J. and Rose Mary (Kippes) Munk. As a young child, her family moved to Sheridan
County, KS where she attended school, graduating from Sheridan County Community
High School in 1954.

Zita
married Clarence Schamberger on April 17, 1956, in Hoxie, KS. From this union
they raised five children: Dave, Leonard, Donald, Deb, and Sharon. She worked alongside
her husband on the farm until they retired. She was a gardener, maintaining
trees, vegetables, and yard, but her passion was growing flowers and sharing
starts with her children and friends. She was a great cook and loved to host
family dinners. She had the talent to put together a great meal with very
little notice when friends or family dropped in to visit&nbsp; &nbsp;Zita
loved having grandchildren come visit and made quilts and blankets for each one.
In later years, she traveled with her husband to many places and often spent
part of the winter in Arizona.

p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with family present to receive friends from 5:30 p.m. to

Zita Mae Schamberger

Suzann Fern (Sidman) Maddy passed away peacefully on October 7,
2025 in her home in Greeley, Colorado surrounded by family members.

Suzann F Maddy was born May 4, 1934 at their farm home near
Oronoque, KS and was the daughter of Paul Sidman and Dorothea Faye
(Burd).&nbsp; She was raised on a farm 7 1/2 miles West and 1 mile south of
Norton, Kansas. Her siblings include Gene Sidman (deceased), Warren Sidman and
Eric Sidman.

Her father Paul, who loved music, instilled that love for music in
Susie as she learned to play the piano and clarinet. In 1951 she graduated from
Norton Community High School and in 1952 married James A. Maddy of Norton, KS
at a church in Selma, Alabama.&nbsp; They lived together while Jim served in
the air force at Craig Air Force Base near Selma. In 1954 Jim was discharged
from the Air Force and they moved back to the Maddy family farm with their
first son, Steve. The family grew quickly to 5 kids including Steve, David,
Cindy, Duane and Rod.

Susie was fun loving and a hard worker, as she helped with all the
family operations including farming, livestock and later their growing family
custom harvesting business. As their harvesting business grew, she would stay
home in the summer and take care of the farming and cow-calf operation while
handling all the family record keeping. She was also a great cook delivering
many homemade meals to their crew and family members working in the field.

Together with her family, she participated in 4-H, pheasant
hunting, taught piano lessons, all while keeping the family members on schedule
with their activities. Her interests included playing classical and ragtime
music on her Wurlitzer piano. She enjoyed traveling the world sometimes with
her best friend Marlene Wilmot and daughter Cindy.

In 2011, She moved to Greeley, Colorado and spent much of her time
traveling the southwest to Bluegrass Festivals with her two corgis, Charlie and
Phoebe. She would travel many times back and forth from Greeley to her Norton
home and visit her beloved friend Shirley Newell.

She is survived by sons: Steve, David and wife Patsy, Duane, Rod
and wife Tammy and daughter,&nbsp;Cindy
Abend; 9 grandchildren including: Kara Miller and husband Aaron, Lucas
Maddy, Katie Gualtieri and husband Charles, Christopher Maddy and fiancé

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Saturday that he has directed the Defense Department to use “all available funds” to ensure&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/military-pay-government-shutdown-congress-trump-e2eabd75a923a7a6feaeeb4af1854054">U.S. troops are paid</a>&nbsp;Wednesday despite the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/government-shutdown">government shutdown</a>.

Trump said in a social media post that he was acting because “our Brave Troops will miss the paychecks they are rightfully due on October 15th.”

The Republican president's action removes one of the pressure points that could have forced Congress into action, likely ensuring that the shutdown -- now in its 11th day and counting — extends into a third week and possibly beyond. But no similar action seems forthcoming for federal workers,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/government-shutdown-federal-worker-firings-0439e8d0979d9a32e021c5c851fea1cf">thousands of whom are now being laid off</a>&nbsp;during the lapse in government operations. The White House budget office started that process on Friday.

Trump blamed Democrats and said he was exercising his authority as commander in chief to direct Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth “to use all available funds to get our Troops PAID on October 15th.” The Republican president added, "We have identified funds to do this, and Secretary Hegseth will use them to PAY OUR TROOPS.”

U.S service members were in danger of not receiving their next paycheck on Wednesday after the government shut down on Oct. 1, the start of the federal budget cycle. The U.S. has about 1.3 million active-duty service members, and the prospect of troops going without pay has been a focal point when lawmakers on Capitol Hill have discussed the shutdown’s negative impact.

Trump did not say where he's getting the money from but it likely will be funded by the billions of dollars that were pumped into the Defense Department under Trump's big tax and spending cut bill that he signed in the summer. The Congressional Budget Office said such a move was possible.

“The Administration also could decide to use mandatory funding provided in the 2025 reconciliation act or other sources of mandatory funding to continue activities financed by those direct appropriations at various agencies,” CBO said.

The CBO cited the Department of Defense, the Department of the Treasury, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Office of Management and Budget as among the departments that received specific funds under the law.

Some of the Pentagon's money "could be used to pay active-duty personnel during a shutdown, thus reducing the number of excepted workers who would receive delayed compensation,” CBO wrote in a letter responding to questions raised by Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa.

The White House did not immediately respond to an email request for details on the president's announcement.

passed away October 9, 2025, at Cedar Village Care Center in Ness City, Kansas.
She was born on February 6, 1933, in Wichita, Kansas, to Delbert and Esther
Dreasher. Upon her mother’s passing at the age of three, Phyllis and her sister
JoAnn were adopted and lovingly raised by her Uncle Warren and Aunt Grace in
Bazine, Kansas.

On June 3, 1951,
Phyllis married Glenn Schniepp. Together, they shared 69 wonderful years of
marriage and raised four sons on their family farm in Bazine. Together they
owned and operated two businesses - Schniepp Construction and Schniepp Grain
where Phyllis served as bookkeeper for both businesses. Phyllis and Glenn were
devoted members of the Bazine United Methodist Church, where they sang together
in the choir. They were also part of a Praise Team, offering music for many
services, celebrations, and funerals.

Phyllis was a
devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She found joy in preparing delicious
meals for her family, tending to her gardens, spending time with her
grandchildren, and caring for her beloved cats.

She is survived by
her four sons: Larry (Belinda) Schniepp of Shenandoah, Iowa; Terry (Colleen)
Schniepp and Marlin (Billie H.-Schniepp) Schniepp, both of Cottage Grove,
Minnesota; and Charles Schniepp of Bazine. She is also survived by her
brother-in-law, Robert Schniepp of Madison, Wisconsin; eight grandchildren and
several great-grandchildren.

Phyllis was preceded
in death by her husband, Glenn Schniepp; her parents, Delbert and Esther
Dreasher; and sister, JoAnn Rein and infant grandsons Travis and Dalton
Schniepp.

Funeral service will
be on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 at the Ness City Methodist Church, Ness City,
KS, 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in the Ness City Cemetery. Viewing will be
held on Monday, October 13, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. with the family
present from 5-7 p.m.

The first lady, speaking to reporters at the White House on Friday, said that Putin responded to her letter and after that, they had established an “open channel of communication” regarding the welfare of those children.

“We have agreed to cooperate with each other for the benefit of all people involved in this war,” she said.

The Associated Press documented the grabbing of Ukrainian children in 2022, after which the International Criminal Court said it&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/icc-putin-war-crimes-ukraine-9857eb68d827340394960eccf0589253">had issued an arrest warrant</a>&nbsp;for Putin for war crimes, accusing him of personal responsibility for the abductions of children from Ukraine.

The program, known as WIC, was at risk of running out of money this month because of the government shutdown, which occurred right before it was slated to receive its annual appropriation.

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said this week in a post&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/PressSec/status/1975642840416780535">on the social platform X</a>&nbsp;that the White House had found “a creative solution” to use tariff revenues to keep the program afloat. By Thursday at least some states were receiving WIC money. Alaska and Washington said they received enough federal funds to keep their programs running until at least the end of October.

WASHINGTON (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">President Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;is in “exceptional health,” his physician said Friday after he underwent a checkup that included lab tests and preventive health assessments at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Trump spent roughly three hours at the Bethesda, Maryland, hospital earlier Friday for what his doctor, Navy Capt. Sean Barbabella, called a “scheduled follow-up evaluation” that was a “part of his ongoing health maintenance plan.” While there, Trump also got his yearly flu shot, as well as a COVID-19 booster vaccine.

“President Donald J. Trump remains in exceptional health, exhibiting strong cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological and physical performance,” Barbabella wrote in a one-page memo released Friday night by the White House. The doctor noted in the memo that the evaluation helped prepare for Trump’s upcoming overseas trips and included advanced imaging, lab testing and preventive health assessments.

The president is traveling to the Middle East this weekend and is scheduled to fly to Asia at the end of this month.

Barbabella also said he evaluated Trump’s cardiac age, which was about 14 years younger than his chronological age. Trump is 79 and was the oldest U.S. president at his inauguration.

The White House this week initially described Trump’s Walter Reed visit as a “routine yearly checkup,” although Trump had&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-physical-weight-loss-oldest-president-75913b1e114cec64ae0acab1389118b2">his annual physical</a>&nbsp;in April. The president then called it a “semiannual physical.”

Trump’s April physical found that he was “fully fit” to serve as commander in chief. The three-page summary of the exam done by Barbabella then said he had lost 20 pounds (9 kilograms) since a medical exam in June 2020 and said he has an “active lifestyle” that “continues to contribute significantly” to the well-being of the president.

In July, the White House announced that Trump had recently undergone a medical checkup after noticing&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-swelling-legs-chronic-venous-insufficiency-health-40beb3c818cfb914645db9d1f143fdd8">“mild swelling” in his lower legs</a>&nbsp;and was found to have a condition common in older adults that causes blood to pool in his veins. Tests by the White House medical unit showed that Trump has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chronic-venous-insufficiency-trump-c2e8884d5e5debd1a0c156cb0060928a">chronic venous insufficiency</a>, which occurs when little valves inside the veins that normally help move blood against gravity gradually lose the ability to work properly.

At the April physical, Trump also passed&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-trump-cognitive-test-neurology-brain-memory-522ecf3c0d746f4105ce7d4416422ba6">a short screening test</a>&nbsp;to assess different brain functions.

Presidents have large discretion over what health information they choose to release to the public. Trump’s summary from his April exam included information about his weight, body mass index, past surgeries, mental health screenings, cholesterol levels and blood pressure.

When spokesperson Karoline Leavitt discussed the results of his chronic venous insufficiency diagnosis from the briefing room, she noted that the White House was disclosing details of the checkup to dispel rumors about Trump’s health. Kan. governor responds to 'childish attacks from public officials'

WASHINGTON (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/mike-johnson/">Mike Johnson</a>&nbsp;is the speaker of a House that is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/government-shutdown">no longer in session</a>.

The Republican leader sent lawmakers home&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/house-trump-funding-bill-republicans-shutdown-1fea0f79c85ec69b91d9789fbda00834">three weeks ago</a>&nbsp;after the House approved a bill to fund the federal government. They haven’t been back in working session since. And on Friday, his leadership team announced they won’t be returning next week either.

In the intervening time, the government has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/government-shutdown-trump-congress-138fd09f4476dcf142be6e9bbc42a592">shut down</a>.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">President Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;began a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/government-shutdown-federal-worker-firings-0439e8d0979d9a32e021c5c851fea1cf">mass firing of federal workers</a>. And a Democrat,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/arizona-congress-grijalva-butierez-1d9fe8fd6f0604f8064f67f6d8cfdca7">Adelita Grijalva</a>, won a special election in Arizona but has not been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/epstein-files-adelita-grijalva-arizona-congress-d52af4b1471a3ed6cd9f0803f711ed64">sworn into office</a>&nbsp;to take her seat in Congress.

“People are upset. I’m upset. I’m a very patient man, but I am angry right now,” Johnson said during one of his almost daily press conferences on the empty side of the Capitol.

“I’m doing our job. We passed the bill,” he said Friday, as he left the building. “It’s on the Senate. They’re the ones playing games. All the questions need to be for them.”

The House’s absence is creating a risky political dilemma for Johnson. It’s testing&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/speaker-johnson-trump-tax-bill-christian-prayer-f82ed140d9110d5cc7b4029b681ea9eb">his leadership</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/house-speaker-mike-johnson-majority-trump-election-65d7217e4541cd314849c9a0da2b0081">his grip on the gavel</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-ufc-house-speaker-johnson-madison-square-garden-995a7ee3324e04ec6da680c826136655">the legacy he will leave</a>&nbsp;as speaker of a House that is essentially writing itself off the page at a crucial moment in the national debate.

There are few easy choices on the schedule ahead. If the speaker calls lawmakers back to Washington, he opens the doors to a potentially&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/video/senators-from-arizona-confront-speaker-johnson-about-not-swearing-in-democratic-colleague-c952e6858c52443fa0edd2fbd95cd16b">chaotic atmosphere</a>&nbsp;of anger, uncertainty and his own GOP defections and divisions as the shutdown drags on.

But by keeping the representatives away going on a fourth week, lawmakers risk being criticized for being absent during a crisis — “on vacation,” as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/government-shutdown-trump-jeffries-sombrero-hats-cb8281193a071b812020ba5dd1c3db78">House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries</a>&nbsp;puts it — as the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/military-pay-government-shutdown-congress-trump-e2eabd75a923a7a6feaeeb4af1854054">military goes without pay</a>&nbsp;and government services shut down.

Johnson’s initial strategy to avoid the government shutdown was a well-worn one — have the House pass its bill, leave town right before the deadline and force the Senate to accept it. Jamming the other chamber, as it’s often called. And it often works.

But this time, it’s a strategy that is failing.

As House skips town, blame falls to Senate

GOP senators have been unable to heave the House bill to passage,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/shutdown-senate-schumer-thune-trump-health-care-b85fe6cdd5d8cdc3e3aa1f4ae889474f">blocked by most of the Democrats</a>, who are refusing to reopen the government as they demand health care funds for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/health-care-subsidies-congress-shutdown-democrats-republicans-bb3464820a347fd2c0399e78e335881e">insurance subsidies</a>&nbsp;that will expire at year’s end if Congress fails to act.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/government-shutdown-thune-ap-interview-omb-memo-6b79cd64987b6173f1b3295dc3505994">Senate Majority Leader John Thune</a>, R-S.D., has been trying, repeatedly, to peel off more Democratic support.

But after having called a vote more than a half-dozen times to pass the House’s bill out of the Senate, not enough Democrats have signed on. Senate&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/charles-schumer">Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer</a>&nbsp;is holding out for a deal on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/shutdown-tax-credits-health-insurance-trump-poll-obamacare-dab7b10bf13dec33a884df5f9fe343f6">the health care issue</a>.

Stalemated, quiet talks are underway, as small groups of lawmakers are privately trying to negotiate off-ramps.

Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska has proposed keeping the health care subsidies in place for the next two years while instituting changes to the program. Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., has a similar proposal, and GOP Sen. Susan Collins of Maine has shared with leadership her own six-point plan.

“We’re making progress,” said Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., who is close to the Republican president. “I think we’re kind of starting to get to a place.”

Not since then-Speaker&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/nancy-pelosi">Nancy Pelosi</a>, a Democrat, sent lawmakers home at the start of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/virus-outbreak-donald-trump-business-ap-top-news-steven-mnuchin-502a3b1afb9c5d1bc14e6af77d112207">the coronavirus pandemic</a>&nbsp;in 2020 has the House been without its lawmakers for such an extended period of time outside of an August recess — but even then, leaders quickly stood up a new system of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/history-in-the-making-as-house-casts-proxy-votes-in-pandemic-6f6fb7ab7ca80360117e0664d4b45682">proxy voting</a>&nbsp;as legislative business continued.

In the Capitol’s empty halls, a few lawmakers linger. They have been filming social media posts as they narrate the inaction. They have created viral moments, including GOP Rep. Mike Lawler’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/virus-outbreak-donald-trump-business-ap-top-news-steven-mnuchin-502a3b1afb9c5d1bc14e6af77d112207">confrontation with Jeffries</a>. Some are simply giving tours to visiting constituents.

GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia has been among the most outspoken critics of her party’s stance, saying Congress needs to address the health care subsidies.

And Grijalva is just&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/adelita-grijalva-swear-congress-epstein-files-25636fec1d99960a5fb11501ac86cc69">trying to go to work</a>.

The representative-elect won the special election to replace her father, veteran Rep.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/raul-grijalva-death-obituary-9484cd0f4911430ef6ef01f9590402d5">Raul Grijalva</a>, who died earlier this year after his own career in Congress.

Her arrival would shrink Johnson’s already slim majority to paper thin, and she has said she would sign onto the legislation demanding the release of the files pertaining to the sex trafficking investigation into&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/jeffrey-epstein">Jeffrey Epstein</a>, providing the last signature needed to force a vote. Democrats have clamored for the release of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/jeffrey-epstein-files-senate-trump-1793c4c1c2f74f89b0cab9ecfd0cfcc8">the Epstein files</a>, looking to force Republicans to either join their push for disclosure or publicly oppose a cause many in the Republican base support.

Johnson, whose majority is among the most narrow in modern times, has refused to swear Grijalva into office.

The speaker has given shifting reasons for why he won’t allow Grijalva to take her seat, saying he’d do it whenever she wanted but also saying the shutdown needs to end first.

He said it has nothing to do with the Epstein files.

As questions mounted over the House’s next steps, so did the speaker’s exasperation.

“The reason the House isn’t here in regular session is because they turned the lights off,” he said during Thursday’s press conference. “I’m trying to muster every ounce of Christian charity that I can, but this is outrageous.”

He declined to say if or when the House would be called back to session.

“We’ll keep you posted,” he said. “And let’s pray this ends soon.”

He was born April 8, 1955 in Colony, Kansas the son of
Robert V. and Joanna L. (Typer) Mollohan.&nbsp;
In 1973, Joel graduated from Hays High School, and following high school
he worked various jobs doing construction work, painting, and he was an
oilfield roughneck.&nbsp; Joel also worked at
Wolf Memorial Co., Waffle-Crete, and enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include his brother-in-law Roger Ross of Edmond,
OK, two nieces, Leah Ross and husband Andrew Fiore of Prescott, AZ and Lacey
Sudik and husband Cody of Yukon, OK, and two great nieces.

He was preceded in death by his father Robert Mollohan, his mother
Joanna Aubel, and his sister Sue Ross.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Monday, October 20,
2025 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Pastor Brenda Rodger
officiating.&nbsp; The family will receive

NEW YORK (AP) — A monthslong calm on Wall Street shattered Friday, and U.S. stocks tumbled after President Donald Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-xi-china-cc47e258cfc6336dfddcc20fa67a3642">threatened to crank tariffs much higher</a>&nbsp;on China.

The S&amp;P 500 sank 2.7% in its worst day since April. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 878 points, or 1.9%, and the Nasdaq composite fell 3.6%.

Stocks had been heading for a slight gain in the morning, until&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Trump</a>&nbsp;took to his social media platform and said he’s considering “a massive increase of tariffs” on Chinese imports. He’s upset at&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/china-earths-exports-trump-dad99d532f858f04d750d0b8c50e5ed6">restrictions China has placed on exports of its rare earths</a>, which are materials that are critical for the manufacturing of everything from consumer electronics to jet engines.

“We have been contacted by other Countries who are extremely angry at this great Trade hostility, which came out of nowhere,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. He also said “now there seems to be no reason” to meet with China’s leader, Xi Jinping, after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-xi-tiktok-china-united-states-e6b6334aef2946b5b8c809be4240cad1">earlier agreeing to do so</a>&nbsp;as part of an upcoming trip to South Korea.

The ratchet higher in tensions between the world’s largest economies led to widespread drops across Wall Street, with roughly six out of every seven stocks within the S&amp;P 500 falling. Nearly everything weakened, from Big Tech companies like Nvidia and Apple to stocks of smaller companies looking to get past uncertainty about tariffs and trade.

The market may have been primed for a slide. U.S. stocks were already facing criticism that their prices had shot too high following the S&amp;P 500’s nearly relentless 35% run from a low in April. The index, which dictates the movements for many 401(k) accounts, is still near its&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stocks-markets-gold-ai-yen-3b5d8a978d326c59cbf484a14868ce66">all-time high</a>&nbsp;set earlier in the week.

Critics say&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stock-market-rates-records-shutdown-earnings-ai-251fefd075ac658ce498c9d1953efc70">the market looks too expensive</a>&nbsp;after prices rose much faster than corporate profits. Worries are&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ai-bubble-warnings-bank-of-england-imf-b15e54f6d06992371ee39b27f4e6da3a">particularly high about companies in the artificial-intelligence industry</a>, where pessimists see echoes of the 2000 dot-com bubble that imploded. For stocks to look less expensive, either their prices need to fall, or companies’ profits need to rise.

Levi Strauss dropped 12.6% for one of the market’s larger losses, even though it reported a stronger profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected.

Its forecast for profit over the full year was also within range of Wall Street’s estimates, but the jeans and clothing company could simply be facing the challenge of heightened expectations after a big run. Its stock price came into the day with a surge of nearly 42% for the year so far.

All told, the S&amp;P 500 fell 182.60 points to 6,552.51. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 878.82 to 45,479.60, and the Nasdaq composite sank 820.20 to 22,204.43.

Some of Friday’s strongest action was in the oil market, where the price of a barrel of benchmark U.S. crude sank 4.2% to $58.90.

It fell as a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/gaza-shelling-ceasefire-israel-c832ff32cf332805ffb50bffa35e8220">ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into effect</a>&nbsp;in Gaza.
