The city of Hays will pay tribute Monday to fallen Hays Police officer Scott Heimann who was was shot and killed in the line of duty one year ago.&nbsp;

Thursday's Hays city commission meeting opened with two proclamations by Mayor Mason Ruder in honor of Heimann.

Ruder declared Sept. 28, 2026, as "Sgt. Scott William Heimann Remembrance Day."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Heimann's wife, children, parents, other family and fellow officers were in the audience.<br>

"It is an absolute honor to be able to read this proclamation for you guys," Ruder said to the family. "Scott was an amazing man and we are so lucky to have him as our guardian angel watching over us this evening."

Ruder also proclaimed that U.S. flags in Hays be flown at half-staff Monday in honor of Heimann.&nbsp;
