During the Ellis County Commission’s 8:30 a.m. meeting Tuesday, Ellis County EMS and Fire Department personnel will receive awards for their efforts in helping save the life of a firefighter.
On Feb. 9, the Ellis County Fire Department was dispatched to a grass fire threatening a structure near Celebration Community Church. While firefighters were gathering at the fire station, Firefighter Matt VanDyke collapsed due to a medical emergency.
Other firefighters took quick action, and once EMS arrived, fire crews made the difficult decision to leave VanDyke with EMS personnel so they could respond to the reported fire. Several hours later, VanDyke was flown to Wichita for a higher level of care.
He was released from the hospital about a week later and returned home. VanDyke will present awards to the EMS and fire personnel who played a part in saving his life.
