Midwest Energy
Midwest Energy reported hundreds of customers received unwelcome calls from scammers Wednesday morning, encouraging customers to call a 1-866 number and “speak to a supervisor” or face disconnection.
“This is a typical scam that we see,” said Mike Morley, communications director at Midwest Energy. “What’s different with this is the sheer volume of calls today. Usually they’ll call a few dozen people, and move on to impersonate another utility in another city. Today, they have called huge numbers of our customers.”
Morley said that Midwest Energy will never call and demand immediate payment over the phone. He said delinquent customers will have received notice in the mail long before a first phone call.
He added, “The ONLY phone number you should ever use to contact Midwest Energy is 1-800-222-3121. That’s the number that’s on our bills, on our website, on all of our printed materials. If you’re asked to call any other number, you’re not talking to Midwest Energy.”
People who get a call threatening electric or gas disconnection are encouraged to hang up, and block the scammer’s number. Customers with concerns about their accounts can call Midwest Energy at 1-800-222-3121.
