City of Hays fireworks safety, usage for residents

The city of Hays Fire Department encourages all residents to practice safety and follow guidelines while enjoying fireworks during Independence Day celebrations:

  1. Fireworks can be legally discharged from July 2 through July 4, between 10 AM and 11 PM.
  2. Fireworks should only be used outdoors and at safe distances:At least 100 feet from hospitals, nursing homes, and fireworks stands.At least 50 feet from fuel pumps and gas stations.

  9. Residents should have appropriate safety equipment readily available, including water hoses, buckets, or fire extinguishers.
  10. Use fireworks responsibly; adults must supervise children under 12.
  11. Mixing alcohol and fireworks is dangerous—appoint a designated sober individual to handle fireworks.
