The city of Hays wants to share an update with residents to a traffic signal outage at the intersection of 22nd and Vine Street.

During the thunderstorms early Sunday morning, the traffic signal cabinet at this location was struck by lightning and sustained significant damage.

City staff and signal technicians have assessed the site and determined that the cabinet requires a complete replacement.

Fortunately, the damage was contained strictly to the cabinet, meaning the poles and signal heads will not require extensive rewiring.

Crews are actively working with suppliers to expedite a replacement.

If a permanent replacement is not immediately available off the shelf, a temporary cabinet will be installed to restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible.

An estimated time of repair will be provided once a firm timeline is established.

In the meantime, motorists are urged to use extreme caution in the area and are reminded that dark or flashing intersections must be treated as a four-way stop.
