Special Olympics Kansas
Special Olympics Kansas is proud to announce that all Special Olympics Kansas State Basketball and Cheerleading teams will return to Hays for the first time since 2017, bringing together athletes, coaches, families, volunteers, and fans from across the state for one of the organization's premier annual competitions.
The State Basketball and Cheerleading Championships will take place March 18–20, 2027 in Hays, welcoming approximately 1,200 athletes and 200 coaches for three days of competition, celebration, and achievement.
Athletes will compete in individual basketball skills, team basketball competitions, and cheerleading events, showcasing hard work and dedication. The event will also feature several longstanding Special Olympics traditions, including Opening Ceremonies, the athletes' banquet, and a dance, providing opportunities for athletes to celebrate their accomplishments and connect with peers from across Kansas.
"Hays has a rich history of supporting Special Olympics Kansas and our athletes," said Brent Kaiser, director of competitions for Special Olympics Kansas. "We are excited to bring all of our State Basketball and Cheerleading participants back together in one community. This event is about much more than competition—it's about inclusion, friendship, confidence, and creating unforgettable experiences for our athletes."
Competition will be held across 12 gymnasiums throughout the Hays community, including facilities at Fort Hays State University, Hays Recreation Commission, Hays High School, and Hays Middle School. Hays has served as a longtime host community for Special Olympics Kansas basketball and cheerleading competitions and remains one of the organization's most significant event locations.
Special Olympics Kansas extends its appreciation to the community partners, volunteers, sponsors, and local organizations whose support helps make the championships possible and ensures a welcoming experience for athletes and families from across the state.
