Ellis County Historical Society
The Ellis County sesquicentennial is officially underway, with a lineup of April events launching a year of activities marking 150 years since the arrival of the Volga Germans in western Kansas.
These opening events offer a chance to gather, learn, and celebrate as the community begins a summer filled with village celebrations, heritage experiences, and time together.

This is just the beginning. In the months ahead, communities across Ellis County will host village celebrations that bring people together through food, music, and shared traditions—creating meaningful moments for families and visitors alike.
The sesquicentennial is a time to reconnect with our roots, reflect on the journey, and celebrate the spirit that continues to shape this region. Whether your family has been here for generations or you are discovering the story for the first time, all are welcome.
Looking ahead, Schoenchen will host the St. Anthony Ancestors Mass on May 24 at 9:00 a.m. with the Bishop, followed by a day of celebration. Make plans now to attend.
