PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona will soon join 14 other states that have banned abortion at all stages of pregnancy after a state Supreme Court ruling Tuesday found that officials may enforce an 1864 law criminalizing all abortions except when a woman's life is at stake.

The court said enforcement won't begin for at least two weeks. However, it could be up to two months, based on an agreement reached in a related case in Arizona, according to state Attorney General Kris Mayes and Planned Parenthood, the plaintiffs in the current case.

The law provides no exceptions for rape or incest.

Under a near-total ban, the number of abortions in the state is expected to drop from about 1,100 monthly — as estimated by a survey for the Society of Family Planning — to almost zero. The forecast is based on what has happened in other states that ban abortion at all stages of pregnancy.

Arizona Sen. Eva Burch, who has had an abortion since&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/arizona-senator-senate-abortion-eva-burch-280e95049fa230e83c6edb3724b244a7">announcing on the Senate floor last month</a>&nbsp;that she was seeking one because her pregnancy wasn’t viable, criticized GOP lawmakers who back the ban.

“The fight for reproductive rights is not over in Arizona,” she said, referring to a statewide petition campaign to put the issue on the ballot this fall. “This moment must not slow us down.”

According to AP VoteCast, 6 out of 10 Arizona voters in the 2022 midterm elections said they would favor guaranteeing access to legal abortion nationwide.

Planned Parenthood officials vowed to continue providing abortions for the short time they are still legal and said they will reinforce networks that help women travel out of state to places like New Mexico and California to access abortion.

“Even with today’s ruling, Planned Parenthood Arizona will continue to provide abortion through 15 weeks for a very short period of time,” said Angela Florez, president of the organization's Arizona chapter.

Arizona State University student Katarina White welcomed the ruling.

“I was overcome by joy and happy to know that all these babies that could potentially be aborted aren’t going to be aborted,” the Tempe resident said. “It just made me really proud to be an Arizonan.”

Brittany Crawford, a mother of three who owns a hair salon in Phoenix, said the high court's ruling could have far-reaching consequences.

“You are going to have a lot of desperate girls doing whatever they can to get rid of their babies," Crawford said. "Some could end up dead.”

She herself had an abortion at 18, right out of high school, and said she suffered extreme emotional trauma.

“I still think I should have the right to decide whether I do have a child, or whether I don’t have a child,” she said.

The Center for Arizona Policy, a longtime backer of anti-abortion proposals before the Legislature, said the state’s highest court reached the appropriate conclusion.

“Today’s outcome acknowledges the sanctity of all human life and spares women the physical and emotional harms of abortion,” the group said in a statement.

Nearly every state ban on abortions has been challenged with a lawsuit. Courts have blocked enforcing some restrictions, including prohibitions throughout pregnancy in Utah and Wyoming.

The Arizona ruling suggests doctors can be prosecuted for performing the procedure, and the 1864 law carries a sentence of two to five years in prison for doctors or anyone else who assists in an abortion.

“In light of this Opinion, physicians are now on notice that all abortions, except those necessary to save a woman’s life, are illegal,” the Arizona Supreme Court said in its decision, adding that additional criminal and regulatory sanctions may apply to abortions performed after 15 weeks.

Jill Gibson, chief medical officer at Planned Parenthood Arizona, said that means legal considerations are now likely to weigh heavily on any decision about abortion.

“It just creates this environment that makes it really impossible for a physician to understand her risk in taking care of her patients,” Gibson said. “Rather than, you know, making clinical decisions based on what my patients are telling me, I will be phoning my lawyers for guidance on what I can do.”

Planned Parenthood said it will continue to offer abortion services up to 15 weeks for at least two more months, in line with an agreement in the related case not to immediately enforce a near-total ban if upheld by the Arizona Supreme Court.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-politics-health-5101ede97957cbf5f4f8aac1d5e5b4fa">overturned Roe v. Wade</a>&nbsp;in 2022, most Republican-controlled states have started enforcing new bans or restrictions, and most Democratic-dominated ones have sought to protect abortion access.

Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, a Republican, persuaded a state judge in Tucson to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-us-supreme-court-health-arizona-legislature-8120658e7f965855fba3f23b950321f0">lift a restriction on enforcing the state's 1864 law</a>. Mayes, Brnovich’s Democratic successor, had urged the state’s high court to hold the line against it.

“Today’s decision to reimpose a law from a time when Arizona wasn’t a state, the Civil War was raging, and women couldn’t even vote will go down in history as a stain on our state,” Mayes said Tuesday.

Former Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, a Republican who signed the state's current law restricting abortion after 15 weeks, posted on the social platform X saying that the state Supreme Court's ruling was not the outcome he would have wanted.

“I signed the 15-week law as governor because it is thoughtful policy, and an approach to this very sensitive issue that Arizonans can actually agree on,” he said.

White House rips ruling as Arizona returns to 1864 abortion law

FRANKLIN COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on multiple allegations after a high-speed chase following a&nbsp; traffic stop in Franklin County.

Just before 3p.m. Tuesday, sheriff's deputies conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 35 in Franklin County for speeding.&nbsp; While talking with the driver and passenger, the deputies developed suspicion of drug possession and use.&nbsp;

Deputies removed the driver from the vehicle for questioning.&nbsp; When deputies returned to the vehicle to question the passenger, he locked the doors and moved to the drivers seat and sped away. Deputies detained the original driver at the scene.

Deputies pursued the fleeing vehicle northbound on I-35.&nbsp; During the pursuit, the driver fired a handgun at the deputies on a at least two occasions. The suspect lost control of the vehicle and crashed at Moonlight Road in Gardner.&nbsp; He ran from the crash into a wooded area.

Law enforcement established a perimeter with assistance from Johnson County deputies.&nbsp; Officer from a number of law enforcement agencies searched the area using a drone and aircraft.&nbsp; Eventually the suspect was located and taken into custody.

Deputies found a quantity of drugs and a firearm in the vehicle. Interstate 35 was shut down during the incident and reopened when it was safe.

The initial driver has been identified as Frank Rinderknecht, 55, Hiawathatha, Iowa. Deputies were working to positively identify the second suspect. Both are being held in the Franklin County Jail.&nbsp;

Fleeing drug suspect fires at Kan. deputies during high speed chase

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Prosecutors dropped a felony rape case against former Kansas basketball player Arterio Morris on Tuesday, citing insufficient evidence while filing a motion in Douglas County District Court to seek its dismissal without prejudice.

Morris was charged last August and dismissed from the Jayhawks’ program after an incident report came to light detailing an alleged rape that occurred at McCarthy Hall, which houses the men’s basketball team along with other residents. The criminal complaint alleged that a sexual assault involving an 18-year-old victim occurred on Aug. 26.

Morris was not named in the incident report, but he was subsequently suspended from the team and then dismissed.

Morris had transferred to Kansas despite facing a misdemeanor assault charge in Texas, where he spent his freshman season playing for the Longhorns. According to Frisco police, Morris was arrested after officers were called to his ex-girlfriend’s house, where she told police that he had grabbed her arm, pulled her off a bed and hurt her neck.

Morris entered a no-contest plea to a Class C charge in that case and was ordered to pay a $362 fine.

Morris was a top-20 recruit out of Kimball High School in Dallas. He signed with the Longhorns and appeared in 38 games, helping Texas beat Kansas in the Big 12 title game and advance to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament two years ago.

RILEY COUNTY - The Burklund/Axelton Fire in portions of Riley and Pottawatomie Counties is considered to be 90% contained, according to a media release.

Pottawatomie County has released all mutual aid crews, while local volunteers continue to monitor the burned area for hotspots and areas of concern.

As for Riley County, crews from not only Riley County but also Pottawatomie County,&nbsp;Kansas Forest Service, Kansas City Kansas Wildland Task Force, Pittsburg, and Garden City, remain on scene monitoring fire conditions.

No aerial support was utilized on Tuesday.

“At this point, personnel and volunteers are mostly keeping an eye on things and addressing hot spots. We’re not worried about the fire advancing today, but we want to make sure nothing unexpected happens,” explained Doug Russell, Deputy Chief of Operations for Riley County Fire District #1.&nbsp;

Smoke and even flames in the burned areas can be expected for at least the next few days.

“Logs and brush piles in the burned areas will continue to smolder for a while,” said Russel Stukey, Fire Chief for Riley County Fire District #1. “Seeing smoke is not a cause for alarm at this time. However, if you believe you see fire that is escaping the blackened perimeter of a burned area, please call 911 right away.”&nbsp;

Pottawatomie County Fire Supervisor Jared Barnes reminds residents to check all past burns for anything that could escape and reignite the fire. Strong winds are predicted for late Wednesday into Thursday.

All roads previously closed in Riley County due to the Burklund/Axelton fire have since been reopened and all residents have been allowed to return home.

One home was lost in Riley County on Friday, and a few structures sustained fire damage over the weekend. No additional structures have been damaged in Riley County, and no structures in Pottawatomie County were lost or damaged as a result of this fire. No loss of livestock or injuries have been reported in either county.

“We appreciate all the work all the crews and volunteers have put in over the last several days. Conditions were difficult, but we never had a shortage of firefighters to do the work. It’s truly heartwarming to see how the community turns out to support each other during difficult times. Without all the volunteers in both counties, this disaster would have been a lot worse,” said Doug Russel.&nbsp;

“I also want to acknowledge the important sacrifice that firefighter families make when a firefighter is working to protect their neighbors and communities”, stated Jared Barnes. “Thank you for your support, encouragement, and understanding as they spend time away from loved ones.”

Thousands of acres have been burned as a result of this fire which started on Friday, April 5th in Pottawatomie County.

The official total number of acres burned should be released in the next few weeks.

Thousands of acres burned, 1 home lost in Kansas wildfire

JERUSALEM —U.S. Forces have overcome another significant attack in the Red Sea.

At approximately <a href="https://twitter.com/CENTCOM/status/1777849458530648295?t=180">3</a>a.m. Tuesday, USS Mason (DDG 87) successfully engaged and destroyed one inbound anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM) launched by Iranian-backed Houthi terrorists from Yemen over the Gulf of Aden, according to a statement from the U.S. Central Command.


The missile was likely targeting the MV Yorktown, a U.S.-flagged, U.S.-owned vessel being escorted by a U.S. warship USS Laboon (DDG 58) and USS Mason (DDG 87). 

There were no injuries or damage reported by U.S., coalition, or commercial ships.

It was determined the ABSM presented an imminent threat to U.S., coalition, and merchant vessels in the region. These actions are taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S, coalition, and merchant vessels.

Meanwhile,&nbsp;U.S. President Joe Biden says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s approach to the war against Hamas is mistaken.

Biden’s remarks in a television interview that aired late Tuesday deepen an already growing rift between the two staunch allies over the war, now in its seventh month. Those disagreements have compounded over the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, Israel’s expected offensive in the city of Rafah and Israel’s recent strike on a humanitarian convoy, which killed seven aid workers, most of them foreigners.

“What he’s doing is a mistake. I don’t agree with his approach,” Biden told U.S. Spanish-language broadcaster Univision in an interview conducted on April 3, two days after the strike on the World Central Kitchen aid convoy. He was responding to a question about whether Netanyahu was letting political considerations steer his decision-making in the war.

Biden said Israel should agree to a cease-fire, flood beleaguered Gaza with aid for the next six to eight weeks and allow regional countries to help distribute the aid. “It should be done now,” he said.

International efforts to broker a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas are taking place in Cairo this week.

Israel’s bombardment and ground offensives in Gaza over the past six months have killed at least 33,360 Palestinians and wounded 74,993, Gaza’s Health Ministry said Tuesday.  </figure>JERUSALEM —U.S. Forces have overcome another significant attack in the Red Sea.At approximately <a href="https://twitter.com/CENTCOM/status/1777849458530648295?t=180">3</a>a.m. Tuesday, USS Mason (DDG 87) successfully engaged and destroyed one inbound anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM) launched by Iranian-backed Houthi terrorists from Yemen over the Gulf of Aden, according to a statement from the U.S. Central Command.
The missile was likely targeting the MV Yorktown, a U.S.-flagged, U.S.-owned vessel being escorted by a U.S. warship USS Laboon (DDG 58) and USS Mason (DDG 87). There were no injuries or damage reported by U.S., coalition, or commercial ships.

It was determined the ABSM presented an imminent threat to U.S., coalition, and merchant vessels in the region. These actions are taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S, coalition, and merchant vessels.Meanwhile,&nbsp;U.S. President Joe Biden says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s approach to the war against Hamas is mistaken.Biden’s remarks in a television interview that aired late Tuesday deepen an already growing rift between the two staunch allies over the war, now in its seventh month. U.S. forces stop new ballistic missile threat in the Red Sea

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Law enforcement authorities investigating a death that occurred on March 30 in Hutchinson have made an arrest.

Just after 1:30 a.m. March 30, officers with Hutchinson Police Department responded to the 400 block of West 2nd Avenue in Hutchinson for an unresponsive 53-year-old man from Hutchinson identified as Lawrence “Larry” Coleman.

Reno County EMS and Hutchinson Fire Department responded to treat&nbsp; Coleman; however, he was pronounced deceased at the scene. During the investigation, detectives discovered Mr. Coleman had been involved in a fight prior to his death. On April 9th, 2024, David “Tate” Logan, 31 of Hutchinson, was arrested for Second Degree Murder.

Suspect arrested for fatal fight outside Kansas bar

KANSAS CITY —Authorities are investigating the cause of a house fire in Kansas City.

Just before 5p.m. Tuesday, crews responded to a reported house fire in the 900 block of Cleveland, according to Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins.

First responders reported heavy fire showing from the two-story home.

After several minutes of operations command had all crews evacuate the structure and commenced defensive operations from the exterior. After gaining control during defensive operations, interior operations resumed. 

Searches of the structure came back all clear. Occupants had evacuated.&nbsp; Fire was placed under control at 5:17p.m.&nbsp;Red Cross responded for 3 adults. There were no injuries reported.

Cause of 2-story Kansas City house fire under investigation

BONNE TERRE, Mo. (AP) — A Missouri man was executed Tuesday for killing his cousin and her husband nearly two decades ago in an attack that left the couple’s 4-year-old daughter home alone and unharmed.

Brian Dorsey, 52, was pronounced dead at 6:11 p.m. after a single-dose injection of the sedative pentobarbital at the state prison in Bonne Terre, Karen Pojmann, communications director for the Missouri Department of Corrections, said in an email. It was the first execution in Missouri this year after four in 2023, and it came hours after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the inmate’s final appeals.

Dorsey took a few deep breaths as the drug was injected, then several shallow, quick breaths. At one point he raised his head from the pillow and blinked hard. After several seconds, all movement stopped. A spiritual adviser seated next to the gurney continued to speak. It was unclear what he was saying — the room is soundproof.

Dorsey, in a final statement, expressed remorse and sorrow for the killings.

“Words cannot hold the just weight of my guilt and shame,” Dorsey said in the written statement.

Police said Dorsey stole several items from the home and tried to pay off a drug debt with some of the stolen goods.

A day after the killings, Sarah Bonnie’s parents went to check on the Bonnies after they had failed to show up for a family gathering. They found the couple’s 4-year-old daughter on the couch watching TV. She told her grandparents that her mother “won’t wake up.” Dorsey surrendered to police Dec. 26 of that year.

Dorsey’s execution had raised new concerns about Missouri’s single-drug protocol, which includes no provision for the use of anesthetics. Dorsey’s attorneys described him as obese, diabetic and a former intravenous drug user, all factors that could have made it difficult to obtain a vein to inject the lethal drug. When that happens, a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/missouri-execution-brian-dorsey-injection-method-aaffa63d0e64c2c87f1d99fbe01cfc0d">cutdown procedure is sometimes necessary</a>.

A cutdown involves an incision, then the use of forceps to pull tissue away from an interior vein. A federal lawsuit on behalf of Dorsey argued that without a local anesthetic, he would be in so much pain that it would impede his right to religious freedom by preventing him from having meaningful interaction with his spiritual adviser, including the administration of last rites.

A settlement was reached Saturday in which the state took unspecified steps to limit the risk of extreme pain. The settlement didn’t spell out the specific changes agreed to by the state, including whether anesthetics would be available.

Pojmann said no cutdown procedure was necessary for Dorsey.

“It went smoothly,” she said. “No problems.”

About 85 protesters gathered outside the prison in support of Dorsey.

Hours before the execution, the Supreme Court turned aside both of Dorsey’s appeals without comment. His lawyers had urged the high court to step in, saying he had shown good behavior in prison and had been rehabilitated. They also argued a $12,000 flat fee paid to his two public defenders gave them incentive to hurry through the case. On their recommendation, Dorsey pleaded guilty despite having no agreement with prosecutors to spare him from the death penalty.

On Monday, Republican Gov. Mike Parson denied a clemency request that included signatures from 72 current and former state corrections officers who urged the governor to commute Dorsey’s sentence to life in prison without parole. They cited Dorsey’s virtually spotless record of good behavior behind bars. Parson, a Republican, is a former county sheriff. He has never granted clemency since taking office in 2018.

Parson, in a statement, said Dorsey “punished his loving family for helping him in a time of need. His cousins invited him into their home, where he was surrounded by family and friends, then gave him a place to stay. Dorsey repaid them with cruelty, inhumane violence, and murder.”

Missouri has scheduled its next execution June 11 for inmate&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/execution-date-set-missouri-inmate-hosier-58f9b156cf4fd640e04b90c7253f3a1c">David Hosier</a>&nbsp;for his conviction in the 2009 killing of a Jefferson City woman. Five people have been executed in five different states this year — Alabama, Texas, Georgia, Oklahoma and Missouri.

Convicted Mo. killer expressed remorse before execution

HARVEY COUNTY— Police arrested a Kansas woman Monday evening in the fatal hit-and-run crash that killed&nbsp;Laurie Robinson, 64, of Newton Monday morning.

Samara Maple, 23, was booked into Harvey County Jail on requested charges of failure to stop at an accident resulting in death, which is a felony. She is being held without bond.

Robinson died Monday morning after she was struck by a car while walking on Southeast 24th Street just east of Interstate 135 in Newton. Police began searching for a white Honda or Acura with passenger-side damage. Maple’s white Honda was taken by police after her arrest.

Kansas woman arrested for fatal hit-and-run 

SEDGWICK COUNTY—A jury last week found a Kansas man guilty of killing two people in a parking garage in&nbsp;Old Town Wichita.

&nbsp;According to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office 20-year-old Zachary Ramirez is guilty on two counts of first-degree murder, two alternative counts of second-degree murder, criminal discharge of a weapon, aggravated battery and two counts of battery.&nbsp;

Just before&nbsp; 4a.m. July 27, police responded to the 300 block of North Moore after a a street sweeper operator saw two gunshot victims in a vehicle in a parking garage in Wichita's Old Town and called 911, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.

EMS and fire arrived on the scene and attempted life-saving measures, but the victims identified as 20-year-old Josephina Lerma-Dominguez and 21-year-old Bryan Lara-Hernandez both of Wichita died at the scene.&nbsp; The district attorney's office has not released a sentencing date for&nbsp;

Jury: Man guilty of killing 2 in Kan. parking garage

HARPER COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Tuesday morning on U.S. Highway 160 in Harper County.

At around 7:15 a.m. on Tuesday, April 9, the Harper County Sheriff’s Office requested the KBI conduct an investigation after their sheriff’s deputy was involved in a shooting. KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team responded to investigate.

A motorist called 911 at approximately 6:55 a.m. to report a vehicle was stopped in the roadway on U.S. Highway 160, heading west. A deputy from the Harper County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area, which was around one mile west of Attica, Kansas. He located a tan 2006 Toyota Prius in the middle of highway. He approached the vehicle to offer assistance.

Preliminary information indicates that as the deputy approached the car he observed a female subject holding a knife in one hand and a scissors in the other. An officer from the Attica Police Department arrived on scene. The deputy and the officer backed away from the vehicle and called for backup. They gave numerous commands for the woman, later identified as Cheryl R. Gaines, 54, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to drop her weapons and exit the vehicle.

As they were backing away, approximately 100 yards from the vehicle, Gaines exited the vehicle as requested, but would not drop her weapons. She then charged and lunged toward the deputy and officer with the knife and scissors. As they were quickly retreating, the officer tripped and fell. Gaines caught up to the officer on the ground, while still armed with the knife and scissors. The Harper County sheriff’s deputy fired three shots toward Gaines, striking her.

EMS pronounced Gaines dead at the scene at approximately 7:15 a.m. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

(AP) — An Oklahoma judge ordered a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-superfan-accused-bank-robberies-kansas-city-f7b764389a54a9e0812ac50eceafa033">Kansas City Chiefs superfan</a>&nbsp;known as “ChiefsAholic” who admitted to a series of bank robberies to pay $10.8 million to a bank teller he threatened and assaulted with a gun.

A judge in Tulsa handed down the order last week against Xaviar Michael Bubudar, 29, who was known for attending Chiefs games dressed as a wolf in the NFL team's gear. Former bank teller Payton Garcia alleged Bubudar used a gun to assault her during a robbery of a Bixby, Oklahoma, credit union in December 2022, court records show.

The judge ordered Bubudar to pay Garcia $3.6 million for her injuries and loss of income, and $7.2 million in punitive damages. A message left Tuesday with Bubudar's attorney was not immediately returned.

Garcia's attorney, Frank Frasier, acknowledged that it would be difficult to collect the money for his client, but said the judgment sends an important message.

“I think the judge feels that way,” Frasier told The Associated Press. “She did not come right out and say it during the hearing, but I argued that nobody should be able to profit from this, be it notoriety, clicks, views or likes.”

Frasier said if Bubudar ever sold his story, wrote a book or was somehow able to profit from his story, his client would be able to collect some of the judgment against him.

Bubudar&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-fan-bank-robberies-guilty-plea-a2f516d83d504c75f77863ac95e2dc89">pleaded guilty in February</a>&nbsp;to a string of robberies of banks and credit unions in multiple states. He remains imprisoned until his formal sentencing, which is set for July 10 in Kansas City.

Federal prosecutors said Babudar admitted to the robberies and attempted robberies in 2022 and 2023 and to laundering the stolen money through casinos and online gambling.

As part of the plea agreement, Babudar must pay at least $532,675 in restitution. He also must forfeit property — including an autographed painting of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes that was recovered by the FBI.

Before his arrest, Babudar was a well-known figure on social media for his rabid support of the Chiefs and attended several games dressed as a wolf in Chiefs’ clothing.

Just after 11:30a.m. Monday, officers filed a report for discharge of a firearm in the 1900 block of Hunting Avenue, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 61-year-old shot himself while attempting to clean his firearm. He was transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Police released no additional details.

Just after 10:30.m.&nbsp; April 6, Kansas City East Patrol Officers were dispatched to a three-vehicle collision and pedestrian hit at East 41st Street and Prospect Avenue in Kansas City, according to Captain Jake Becchina.

A pedestrian had just parked his Buick and exited his vehicle. A southbound Chevrolet on Prospect struck the pedestrian and his parked Buick. 

The Chevrolet then struck a stopped Nissan when it appeared the driver was trying to leave the scene. The pedestrian was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Chevrolet was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Nissan reported minor injuries in the collision but refused medical treatment.&nbsp; Police have not released the name of the victim or additional details.

KCPD: Pedestrian injured after struck by vehicle has died

PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — A judge sentenced the parents of a Michigan school shooter to at least 10 years in prison Tuesday for failing to take steps that could have prevented a “runaway train” — the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/oxford-high-school-shooting">killing of four students in 2021</a>.

Jennifer and James Crumbley are&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/oxford-high-school-shooting-james-crumbley-d13192e4057ec00836e4ce99c17bd375">the first parents convicted in a U.S. mass school shooting</a>. They were found guilty of involuntary manslaughter after prosecutors presented evidence of an unsecured gun at home and indifference toward the teen’s mental health.

Ethan Crumbley drew dark images of a gun, a bullet and a wounded man on a math assignment, accompanied by despondent phrases. Staff at Oxford High School did not demand that he go home but were surprised when the Crumbleys didn’t volunteer it during a brief meeting.

Later that day, on Nov. 30, 2021, the 15-year-old pulled a handgun from his backpack and began shooting. Ethan, now 17, is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/oxford-michigan-school-shooting-ethan-crumbley-sentencing-fb10065053ca542b0d443671bab53947">serving a life sentence for murder and other crimes</a>.

“These convictions are not about poor parenting,” Judge Cheryl Matthews said. "These convictions confirm repeated acts, or lack of acts, that could have halted an oncoming runaway train.

“About repeatedly ignoring things that would make a reasonable person feel the hair on the back of their neck stand up,” the judge said. “Opportunity knocked over and over again — louder and louder — and was ignored. No one answered.”

Defense attorneys asked that the Crumbleys be spared a prison term, noting they have already served nearly 2 1/2 years in jail after failing to meet a $500,000 bond after their arrest.

The Crumbleys will be eligible for parole after serving 10 years in custody and will get credit for the jail time. If parole is denied, they can't be held longer than 15 years.

Before sentencing, family members of the slain students asked the judge for a 10-year term, condemning the parents as failures whose selfishness led to four deaths and a community tragedy.

“The blood of our children is on your hands, too,” said Craig Shilling, wearing a hoodie with the image of son Justin Shilling on his chest.

Nicole Beausoleil, the mother of Madisyn Baldwin, recalled simple things she enjoyed doing for her daughter, such as scheduling an oil change for her car or helping choose senior year classes.

“While you were purchasing a gun for your son and leaving it unlocked, I was helping her finish her college essays,” Beausoleil told the Crumbleys.

Five deputies in the courtroom stood watch over the couple and more lined the walls.

Prosecutors said simple acts by both parents could have stopped the catastrophe.

“Consider the devastating impact of their gross negligence that was foreseeable," prosecutor Karen McDonald told the judge.

She then quoted the grim handwritten lines on Ethan's math paper: “Help me. Blood everywhere. The world is dead.”

“All the while a 9 millimeter (gun) had just been purchased for him and 50 rounds of ammunition,” McDonald said.

The couple had separate trials in Oakland County court, 40 miles (64 kilometers) north of Detroit. Jurors saw the teen's violent drawing on his school assignment and heard testimony about the crucial hours before the attack.

Ethan had told a counselor he was sad — a grandmother had died and his only friend suddenly had moved away — but said the drawing only reflected his interest in creating video games.

The Crumbleys attended a meeting at the school that lasted less than 15 minutes. They did not mention that the gun resembled one James Crumbley had purchased just four days earlier — a Sig Sauer 9 mm that Ethan had described on social media as his “beauty.”

His parents didn't take him home, choosing instead to return to work and accepting a list of mental health providers. School staff said Ethan could stay on campus. A counselor, Shawn Hopkins, said he believed it would be safer for the boy than possibly being alone at home.

No one, however, checked Ethan's backpack. He pulled the gun out later that day and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-football-michigan-77eb45f22f5d9dab802e4378608ca307">killed four students</a>&nbsp;— Tate Myre, Hana St. Juliana, Shilling and Baldwin — and wounded seven other people.

Before being sentenced, James Crumbley, 47, stood and insisted he did not know his son was deeply troubled.

"My heart is really broken for everybody involved. ... I have cried for you and the loss of your children more times than I can count," he said.

Jennifer Crumbley, 46, began her remarks by expressing her “deepest sorrow” about the shooting. She also said her comment at her trial about not doing anything differently was “completely misunderstood.”

“My son did seem so normal. I didn't have a reason to do anything different,” Jennifer Crumbley said. “With the benefit of hindsight and information I have now, my answer would be drastically different."

She blamed the school for not giving her the “bigger picture” about Ethan: sleeping in class, watching a video of a mass shooting, writing negative thoughts about his family.

“The prosecution has tried to mold us into the type of parents society wants to believe are so horrible only a school or mass shooter could be bred from,” Jennifer Crumbley said. “We were good parents. We were the average family."

During the trials, there was no testimony from specialists about Ethan's state of mind. But the judge, over defense objections, allowed the jury to see excerpts from his journal.

“I have zero help for my mental problems and it’s causing me to shoot up the ... school,” he wrote. “I want help but my parents don’t listen to me so I can’t get any help.”

Asked about Ethan reporting hallucinations months before the shooting, Jennifer Crumbley told jurors he was simply “messing around.”

At the close of James Crumbley's trial, the prosecutor demonstrated how a cable lock, found in a package at home, could have secured the gun.

History: Parents of school shooter get years in prison

BUTLER COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities and USD 490 El Dorado school officials are investigating alleged sex crimes.

On April 5, Detectives from the El Dorado Police Department and School Resource Officers with USD 490 investigated a report of a sexually motivated crime with a suspect not affiliated with the school district, according to Deputy Police Chief Jeff Murphy.

The investigation led to the arrest of 50-year-old Patrick A. Jeffers from El Dorado. He is being held on requested charges that include&nbsp;multiple counts of Aggravated Criminal Sodomy and Rape.

Police said they are grateful for their partnership with the Sunlight Child Advocacy Center and USD 490 in addressing these particular heinous crimes.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Firefighters were called Monday after people spotted the animal hopping around on the pillars that support the bridge, high above the ground below, The Kansas City Star&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/article287504335.html">reports.</a>

Hoping to lower it down to waiting rescuers, a bystander managed to get a rope around the goat's neck, said Tori Fugate, of the KC Pet Project, a nonprofit that handles animal control for the city and operates shelters.

But Fugate said the goat wound up hanging from its neck, not moving, leaving rescuers worried it had died.

It appeared he had walked along a ledge to get to the point where he was found. Once he was off the bridge, he was transported to the KC Pet Project shelter where he received fluids from the veterinary team and was set up overnight to rest. "We’re hopeful he’ll make a full recovery.
