United States Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kansas) makes an appearance at Chiefs Training Camp in St. Joseph.

“I’m a lifelong Chiefs fan. I remember Super Bowl I. I remember Super Bowl IV,” Marshall tells KFEQ/St. Joseph Post. “And just a boyhood dream to come to camp some day and here it is, so excited to see everybody.”

Marshall, a Republican, says he is pleased with the start of President Trump’s second term.

“Well, I think that we’ve never seen such a successful first six months of a presidency. That we’ve secured the border. That we’ve rolled back regulation. That the price of gas and groceries are coming down. Job market looks good,” according to Marshall. “Trillions of dollars are going to be invested here in the next several years as well to grow those jobs even more. Very proud of our big, beautiful bill.”

Marshall says he is pleased to see President Trump move to shore up trade agreements with major trading partners, such as the United Kingdom and the European Union.

“EU is probably our second biggest trade partner, overall, right now. And, basically, they’ve locked us out for years. So, we’re unable to sell Kansas agriculture products, Kansas ethanol in EU right now,” Marshall says. “So, we’re going to break down those non-tariff barriers and it will be good for the world economy overall.”

He says a move to reach agreements in southeast Asia could have a big impact.

“By getting agreements done with Indonesia, which is the 4th largest country in the world right now,” Marshall says. “Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan, the Philippines. So, we’re kind of making a box around China and going to force them to the table as well.”

Marshall says agriculture will benefit from the recent agreements, though another industry will benefit a bit more.

“I think agriculture will have a significant benefit, because it’s going from zero to something; probably a $25 billion trade deficit with the EU right now as well. But there are bigger markets out there for our food as well,” Marshall says. “Probably the cars is the big issue with the EU. We buy so many of their cars, but they block our cars from going in there. The president removing tariffs going into the EU is really going to open up that market.”

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. fashion retailer American Eagle Outfitters wanted to make a splash with its new advertising campaign starring 27-year-old actor&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/sydney-sweeney">Sydney Sweeney</a>. The ad blitz included “clever, even provocative language” and was “definitely going to push buttons,” the company’s chief marketing officer told trade media outlets.

It has. The question now is whether some of the public reactions the fall&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/zac-posen-gapstudio-collection-gap-b3d16524ad9ea0ec04f88ece0808e1a3">denim campaign</a>&nbsp;produced is what&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cost-per-wear-shopping-inflation-9b93abdde32c855a46fb37aa7d2ff38d">American Eagle</a>&nbsp;intended.

Titled “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,” the campaign sparked a debate about race, Western beauty standards, and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/diversity-equity-and-inclusion">the backlash</a>&nbsp;to “woke” American politics and culture. Most of the negative reception focused on videos that used the word “genes” instead of “jeans” when discussing the blonde-haired, blue-eyed actor&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/entertainment-lifestyle-arts-and-entertainment-los-angeles-af96fc294d1302789b3ea4bacac7996e">known for the HBO series</a>&nbsp;“Euphoria” and “White Lotus.”

Some critics saw the wordplay as a nod, either unintentional or deliberate, to eugenics, a discredited theory that held humanity could be improved through selective breeding for certain traits.

Marcus Collins, an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, said the criticism could have been avoided if the ads showed models of various races making the “genes” pun.

“You can either say this was ignorance, or this was laziness, or say that this is intentional,” Collins said. “Either one of the three aren’t good.”

Other commenters accused detractors of reading too much into the campaign's message.

“I love how the leftist meltdown over the Sydney Sweeney ad has only resulted in a beautiful white blonde girl with blue eyes getting 1000x the exposure for her ‘good genes,’" former Fox News host Megyn Kelly wrote Tuesday on X.

American Eagle didn't respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press.

The ad blitz comes as the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/a7cc45d9fbdf4417981ec6c0f4e93e01">teen retailer</a>, like many merchants, wrestles with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/economy-trump-sales-retail-7347cc7d0b8bec163fac1a89ed013c4f">sluggish consumer spending</a>&nbsp;and higher costs from tariffs. American Eagle reported that total&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/american-eagle-outfitters-tariff-inventory-f93fa8f6c686070edf351446271e4160">sales were down</a>&nbsp;5% for its February-April quarter compared to a year earlier.

A day after Sweeney was announced as the company's latest celebrity collaborator, American Eagle's stock closed more than 4% up. Shares were volatile this week and trading nearly 2% down Wednesday.

Like many trendy clothing brands, American Eagle has to differentiate itself from other mid-priced chains with a famous face or by saying something edgy, according to Alan Adamson, co-founder of marketing consultancy Metaforce.

Adamson said the Sweeney campaign shares a lineage with Calvin Klein jeans ads from 1980 that featured a 15-year-old Brooke Shields saying, “You want to know what comes in between me and my Calvins? Nothing.” Some TV networks declined to air the spots because of its suggestive double entendre and Shields' age.

“It’s the same playbook: a very hot model saying provocative things shot in an interesting way,” Adamson said.

Chief Marketing Officer Craig Brommers told industry news website Retail Brew last week that “Sydney is the biggest get in the history of American Eagle,” and the company would promote the partnership in a way that matched.

The campaign features videos of Sweeney wearing slouchy jeans in various settings. She will appear on 3-D billboards in Times Square and elsewhere, speaking to users on Snapchat and Instagram, and in an AI-enabled try-on feature.

American Eagle also plans to launch a limited edition Sydney jean to raise awareness of domestic violence, with sales proceeds going to a nonprofit crisis counseling service.

In a news release, the company noted “Sweeney’s girl next door charm and main character energy – paired with her ability to not take herself too seriously – is the hallmark of this bold, playful campaign.”

In one video, Sweeney walks toward an American Eagle billboard of her and the tagline “Sydney Sweeney has great genes.” She crosses out “genes” and replaces it with “jeans.”

But what critics found the most troubling was a teaser video in which Sweeney says, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue.”

The video appeared on American Eagle’s Facebook page and other social media channels but is not part of the campaign.

While remarking that someone has good genes is sometimes used as a compliment, the phrase also has sinister connotations. Eugenics gained popularity in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.genome.gov/about-genomics/fact-sheets/Eugenics-and-Scientific-Racism">early 20th century America</a>, and Nazi Germany embraced it to carry out Adolf Hitler’s plan for an Aryan master race.

Civil rights activists have noted signs of eugenics regaining a foothold through the far right's promotion of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/great-white-replacement-theory-explainer-c86f309f02cd14062f301ce6b9228e33">the “great replacement theory,”</a>&nbsp;a racist ideology that alleges a conspiracy to diminish the influence of white people.

Shalini Shankar, a cultural and linguistic anthropologist at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, said she had problems with American Eagle's “genes” versus “jeans” because it exacerbates a limited concept of beauty.

“American Eagle, I guess, wants to rebrand itself for a particular kind of white privileged American,” Shankar said. “And that is the kind of aspirational image they want to circulate for people who want to wear their denim.”

Many critics compared the American Eagle ad to a misstep by Pepsi in 2017, when it released a TV ad that showed model Kendall Jenner offer a can of soda to a police officer while ostensibly stepping away from a photo shoot to join a crowd of protesters.

Viewers mocked the spot for appearing to trivialize protests of police killings of Black people. Pepsi&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ac67482e93c74585b35f8b51294d888d">apologized and pulled the ad</a>.

The demonstrations that followed the 2020 killing of George Floyd by a white police officer in Minneapolis pushed many U.S. companies to make their advertising better reflect consumers of all races.

Some marketers say they've observed another shift since President Donald Trump returned to office and moved to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-dei-executive-order-diversity-inclusion-f67ea86032986084dd71c5aa0c6b8d1d">abolish all federal DEI programs and policies</a>.

Jazmin Burrell, founder of brand consulting agency Lizzie Della Creative Strategies, said she's noticed while shopping with her cousin more ads and signs that prominently feature white models.

“I can see us going back to a world where diversity is not really the standard expectation in advertising,” Burrell said.

American Eagle has been praised for diverse marketing in the past, including creating a denim hijab in 2017 and offering its Aerie lingerie brand in a wide range of sizes. A year ago, the company released a limited edition denim collection with tennis star Coco Gauff.

The retailer has an ongoing diversity, equity and inclusion program that is primarily geared toward employees. Two days before announcing the Sweeney campaign, American Eagle named the latest recipients of its scholarship award for employees who are driving anti-racism, equality and social justice initiatives.

Marketing experts offer mixed opinions on whether the attention surrounding “good jeans” will be&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/bd7d138ad63de93e157d7c7ae44e5d60">good for business</a>.

“They were probably thinking that this is going to be their moment," Myles Worthington, the founder and CEO of marketing and creative agency WORTHI. "But this is doing the opposite and deeply distorting their brand."

Melissa Murphy, a marketing professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business, said she liked certain parts of the campaign but hoped it would be expanded to showcase people besides Sweeney for the “sake of the brand.”

Other experts say the buzz is good even if it's not uniformly positive.

“If you try to follow all the rules, you’ll make lots of people happy, but you’ll fail,” Adamson said. “The rocket won’t take off. ”

HARVEY COUNTY —Five Newton teens are now in custody after a shooting Wednesday night, according to a social media report from Newton Police.

The investigation has led police to conclude this was a gun and drug trade deal gone wrong. One side brandished a gun, and shots were exchanged between the two groups. This conclusion is based on interviews of all those involved, as well as independent witnesses.

 The five boys, all believed to be 17, are facing various charges depending on their involvement, including attempted murder, aggravated robbery, illegal possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, and drug possession. 

The shooting occurred at around 5:30 Wednesday evening at an apartment complex in the 1200 block of East Broadway. One boy was injured and taken by ambulance to a Wichita hospital. He was treated and released and was later arrested. Police worked three scenes overnight: the apartment complex on East Broadway where the shooting occurred, a house near 10th and Oak where the injured teen first fled, and a car crash near Second and High where a fleeing suspect hit a parked car.

Police have interviewed many witnesses and are still working to confirm what happened and why. Police believe they have spoken to all those involved, and the community is not in danger.

Trump unveiled sweeping import taxes on goods coming into the U.S. from nearly every country back in April. That included heightened so-called reciprocal rates for certain countries, the bulk of which have since been postponed twice.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-reciprocal-tariffs-higher-rates-china-9645cf4608a8c153e90bdd10263ccb01">first 90-day pause</a>&nbsp;arrived in an apparent effort to quell&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/live/donald-trump-news-updates-4-4-2025">global market panic</a>&nbsp;and facilitate country-by-country negotiations, with the Trump administration at one point setting a lofty goal of reaching&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-tariffs-presidential-power-instinct-decision-making-3d1215e5675ef534bbebe8dfe8f136a5">90 trade deals in 90 days</a>.

But three months later, only two deals emerged: with the U.K. and Vietnam. A separate “framework” for a deal was hashed out with China. And by early July, Trump began sending warning letters that higher tariffs would be imposed against dozens of countries on Aug. 1.

Since then, the U.S. has announced more trade frameworks. But, key details remain sparse — or not immediately captured in writing.

Here's what we know about the agreements so far, in the order of those most recently announced.

The U.S. president said he reached an agreement with Seoul on July 30 that would impose a 15% tariff for goods from South Korea.

But some key details&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/eu-tariffs-united-states-15-prices-growth-31e52a6dda17f3b5d70475e1cd0002ca">require more work</a>. The headline of the agreement, unveiled July 27, is that the 15% tariff rate will apply to 70% of European goods brought into the U.S. — with the EU later confirming that that rate applies to pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and car and car parts. But the remaining 30% of those imports is still open for negotiations.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that both sides had agreed to zero tariffs for a range of “strategic” goods. Meanwhile, Trump pointed to heightened investments from European companies in the U.S. — including what Trump said was $750 billion (638 billion euros) worth of natural gas, oil and nuclear fuel over three years, as well as an additional $600 billion (511 billion euros) under a political commitment that isn’t legally binding, officials said.

On July 22, Trump announced a trade framework&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-tariffs-japan-indonesia-philippines-6e1829cb570d945d13c00f07059a41d4">to impose 15% tariffs</a>&nbsp;on Japan — down from his previously-threatened rate of 25%. The U.S. president also said Japan would invest $550 billion into the U.S. and would “open” its economy to American autos and rice.

The newly-agreed on 15% tariff rate also applies to Japanese cars — marking a welcome relief for automakers like Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda — which, like other automakers, have faced a 25% levy on key parts and finished vehicles going into the U.S. since earlier this year. But car companies in other countries, including U.S. competitors, worry that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-japan-tariffs-autos-taxes-trade-5a5afd77dad958f8fae656a371df6f09">this could put them at a disadvantage</a>.

Shortly after a July 22 meeting with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., Trump announced that he would lower his upcoming tariffs&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/marcos-trump-philippines-china-tariffs-3138d1d7f8368c022ab9242bebb4a2e2">on imports from the country to 19%</a>&nbsp;— down just 1% from his previous threat of 20%.

In return, Trump said on Truth Social, the U.S. would not pay tariffs on American goods it shipped to the Philippines. But additional details remained unclear. Marcos said his country was considering options such as having an open market without tariffs for U.S. automobiles, but emphasized details were still left to be worked out.

On July 15, Trump again took to social media to announce that he’s agreed to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/live/donald-trump-news-updates-7-15-2025#00000198-0f1f-d457-ab9e-1f9f41f80000">lower his planned tariffs on Indonesian goods to 19%</a>&nbsp;— down from a previously-threatened levy of 32% — while American goods sent to the southeast Asian country will face no tariffs. A fact sheet from the White House later confirmed that “over 99% of U.S. products” exported to Indonesia would be sent duty-free.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said he will continue to negotiate with Trump, in hopes of further lowering the coming U.S. tariffs.

On July 2, Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-trade-tariff-vietnam-exports-china-a1a0725198d10ef240398f2dec3a6c23">announced a trade deal with Vietnam</a>&nbsp;that he said would allow U.S. goods to enter the country duty-free. Vietnamese exports to the U.S., by contrast, would face a 20% levy.

That's less than half the 46% “reciprocal” rate Trump proposed for Vietnamese goods back in April. But in addition to the new 20% tariff rate, Trump said the U.S. would impose a 40% tax on “transshipping’’ — targeting goods from another country that stop in Vietnam on their way to the United States. Washington complains that Chinese goods have been dodging higher U.S. tariffs by transiting through Vietnam.

On May 8, Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-uk-trump-starmer-trade-deal-79d55b8ade0dd8c9265ada9400d079db">agreed to cut tariffs</a>&nbsp;on British autos, steel and aluminum, among other trade pledges — while the U.K. promised to reduce levies on U.S. products like olive oil, wine and sports equipment. The deal was announced in grandiose terms by both countries, but&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/uk-trade-deal-us-trump-starmer-tariff-steel-f65fb13f17cfc14d0b5b8d267953d5c4">some key details remained unknown</a>&nbsp;for weeks.

When the deal was announced, for example, the British government notably said that the U.S. agreed to exempt the U.K. from its then-universal 25% duties on foreign steel and aluminum — which would have effectively allowed both metals from the country to come into the U.S. duty-free.

But the timing for when those cuts would actually take effect stayed up in the air for almost a month. It wasn’t until early June, when Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-us-steel-nippon-pennsylvania-7d8a252934abef553ca9ea7e9e8febc2">hiked his steel and aluminum tariffs</a>&nbsp;to a punishing 50% worldwide, that the U.S.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-tariffs-steel-aluminum-trade-240dbc3823ecd66d3dd05a66883f9277">acknowledged it was time to implement</a>&nbsp;the agreement. And even then, U.S. tariffs on British steel and aluminum did not go to zero. The U.K. was the only country spared from Trump’s new 50% levies, but still faces 25% import taxes on the metals.

At its peak, Trump’s new tariffs on Chinese goods totaled 145% — and China’s countertariffs on American products reached 125%. But on May 12, the countries agreed to their own 90-day truce to roll back those levies to 30% and 10%, respectively. And in June, details began trickling in about&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-china-trade-tariffs-rare-earth-minerals-cbd2482bd2b3a7ce8d47030c4ff1c3d4">a tentative trade agreement</a>.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that China had agreed to make it easier for American firms to acquire&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rare-earths-trump-tariffs-china-trade-war-effd6a7ec64b5830df9d3c76ab9b607a">Chinese magnets and rare earth minerals</a>&nbsp;critical for manufacturing and microchip production. On July 29, China’s top trade official said the two sides had agreed to work on&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-china-trade-stockholm-tariffs-bessent-lifeng-2cffb7de31169afc8de0c02bedb4683a">extending an Aug. 12 deadline</a>&nbsp;for new tariffs on each other, following a two-day trade meeting in Stockholm. The U.S. side said extension plans were discussed, but not decided.

Trump's tariff deadline is here: Trade deals the US has announced so far

&nbsp;JACKSON COUNTY, Kan.—Law enforcement are investigating two suspects on multiple allegations after a late-night traffic stop.

Around midnight July 27, a Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on U.S. 75 Highway near Columbine Drive on a 2009 Chevy Traverse for multiple alleged traffic infractions, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

 The traffic stop led to the discovery of illegal drug contraband.  The driver, Darrell Wayne Ralls, 65, of Topeka was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of a hallucinogenic drug, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a stolen firearm and criminal use of weapons; possession of firearm by person addicted to or use controlled substance. 

 The passenger, Heather Michelle Ralls, 52, of Topeka was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of a hallucinogenic drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Sheriff: Kan. couple caught with meth, stolen firearm

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Thursday plans to reestablish the Presidential Fitness Test for American schoolchildren.

The program, which was created in 1966, had children run and perform situps, pullups or pushups and a sit-and-reach test. It changed in 2012 during the Obama administration to focus more on individual health than athletic feats.

The president "wants to ensure America’s future generations are strong, healthy, and successful," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement, and that all young Americans "have the opportunity to emphasize healthy, active lifestyles — creating a culture of strength and excellence for years to come.”

In a late afternoon ceremony at the White House, Trump intends to sign an order that reestablishes the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, as well as the fitness test, to be administered by his health secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The council also will develop criteria for a Presidential Fitness Award.

In 2012, the assessment evolved into the Youth Fitness Program, which the government said “moved away from recognizing athletic performance to providing a barometer on student’s health.”

The Youth Fitness Test, according to a&nbsp;<a href="https://odphp.health.gov/pcsfn/programs-awards/presidential-youth-fitness-program">Health and Human Services Department website</a>&nbsp;last updated in 2023 but still online Thursday, “minimizes comparisons between children and instead supports students as they pursue personal fitness goals for lifelong health.”

Expected to join Trump at the event are a number of prominent athletes, including some who have faced controversy.

RENO COUNTY — Firefighters from three departments responded to a fully involved house fire Wednesday night in rural Reno County.

Just before 8p.m., crews from Pretty Prairie and Reno County Fire Districts 8 and 9 were dispatched&nbsp; to the 24,000 block of South Graber Road, according to Reno County Emergency Management. The first unit on scene reported a single-story home engulfed in flames.

The fire was reported by a neighbor, as the resident was not home at the time, officials said. No injuries were reported. Pretty Prairie EMS responded and provided rehabilitation for fire crews.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Reno County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire destroys rural Kansas home

NEOSHO COUNTY&nbsp;–The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Neosho County Sherriff’s Office arrested an Erie, Kansas man for alleged child sex crimes, according to a media release from the KBI.

Just after 7:30a.m. on Wednesday, KBI agents and the Neosho County Sheriff’s Office arrested 42-year-old registered sex offender Peter Hawkinson, of Erie.

 Hawkinson was arrested on requested charges that include 24 counts of sexual exploitation of a child and one count of violating Kansas offender registration after a search warrant was conducted at 22030 Ottawa Road in Erie.

The KBI Child Victims Unit began investigating after a cyber-tip was received from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) in May.

Hawkinson has been listed as a Registered Sex Offender since April of 2016 for two aggravated indecent solicitation of a child convictions, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

Following the arrest, Hawkinson was booked into the Neosho County Jail.&nbsp;

&nbsp;The case is expected to be prosecuted by the Neosho County Attorney’s Office.

Just before 2a.m. Wednesday, police responded to a disturbance in the 1100 Block of Central Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas, according to a media release.&nbsp; Police arrived and the victims reported a suspect fired a gun at them as they were walking their dog down the sidewalk.

The suspect then ran back into the building and barricaded himself in his apartment when officers attempted to talk to him. Just before 9a.m. Wednesday, police took him into custody. Police have not released his name or possible charges.

7-hour Kan. standoff after shooting at victim walking a dog

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Arkansas police charged a 28-year-old schoolteacher in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/arkansas-state-park-stabbing-deaths-0366548e23a690beb4bb26f138a8cddc">killing of a married couple</a>&nbsp;who were hiking with their children at Devil’s Den State Park, finding him in a nearby city after a five-day search and public pleas for trailgoers to look through their photos.

State Police arrested Andrew James McGann at a barbershop in Springdale, said Col. Stacie Rhoads, commander of the department's criminal investigation division. He was charged with two counts of capital murder and was being held Thursday in the state's Washington County jail.

Police announced the arrest at a Wednesday night news conference but would not discuss a motive. McGann had been hired at Springdale Public Schools as a teacher candidate for the upcoming year but had not yet come into contact with any of its families or students, the district said in a statement.

A lawyer couldn't be located for McGann, and a message was left for a number listed for him. It was not immediately clear when his first court appearance was.

“If you commit a violent, senseless act here in our state, our law enforcement will hunt you down and bring you to justice, because that’s what the people of Arkansas frankly deserve,” Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters.

Springdale is roughly 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of the state's remote Devil's Den park, where trails have remained closed since Saturday's killings.

Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, were found dead on a walking trail at Devil’s Den. Their daughters, who are 7 and 9, were not hurt and are being cared for by family members, authorities have said.

The State Police have released few details about the investigation, including how the couple was killed. In the days after the attack, police&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/arkansas-hikers-stabbed-devils-day-park-f4c83732c08cd75ecc79c6dc51f7d4f8">released a composite sketch</a>&nbsp;and then a photo of a person of interest that showed them only from behind. Authorities urged trailgoers who had been at the park to check their camera rolls for photos or video that might help point to a suspect.

Rhoads said the public’s help and video footage they received was instrumental in capturing McGann. Tips came in from as far away as Washington state, she said.

Suspect taught in Oklahoma before Arkansas job

McGann was a teacher at a small Oklahoma school district until May and then resigned to take a job in another state, according to a statement from Sand Springs Public Schools, which is near Tulsa. It added that McGann had passed all background checks.

McGann had not yet started his new job in Arkansas at Springdale Public Schools, said Jared Cleveland, the district superintendent. He said the district could not provide more information, citing the investigation.

“Our entire team extends our deepest condolences to the Brink family. Their children are especially in our thoughts and prayers,” Cleveland said.

Sierra Marcum said three years ago, her son was a student in McGann’s fourth grade classroom in Flower Mound, Texas, and described him as the “most standoff teacher she had ever met.” Her son’s yearbook includes a photo of McGann.

“Pretty cold. You could ask him a question and he would give you a one word response,” she said. “Overall just pretty disinterested in his students.”

Clinton and Cristen Brink had just moved from South Dakota to the small city of Prairie Grove in northwest Arkansas. Their water had been connected less than two weeks ago, Mayor David Faulk said.

Clinton Brink had been scheduled to start a job as a milk delivery driver Monday in the nearby Fayetteville area, according to Hiland Dairy, his employer. Cristen Brink had been licensed as a nurse in Montana and South Dakota before moving to Arkansas.

The Brink family said the couple died “heroes protecting their little girls.”

“Our entire state is grieving for the tragic loss and senseless and horrific crime that’s taken place in this area,” Sanders said.

Devil's Den is a 2,500-acre (1,000-hectare) state park near West Fork, about 140 miles (220 kilometers) northwest of Little Rock, the state capital.

The park is known for its hiking trails and rock formations, and it is a short drive from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and Walmart’s Bentonville headquarters.

It was selected as a state park site in the 1930s and the park's trails lead to the surrounding Ozark National Forest.

Teacher charged with killing couple hiking in Devil's Den with their kids

TOPEKA — Kansas officials stood firm against a July 30 deadline set by the federal government to turn over the personal data of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients.

In a press release Wednesday afternoon, the Department for Children and Families said releasing the requested data could open DCF to liability, depending on the outcome of a lawsuit filed by multiple states.

This is the<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/05/22/kansas-denies-usda-request-for-personal-data-of-residents-receiving-food-assistance/">&nbsp;second time Kansas has refused</a>&nbsp;to turn over data requested by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.&nbsp;

The lawsuit, in which Kansas is not a party, asks the courts to stop the USDA from forcing states to turn over the data, the press release said.&nbsp;

The data includes sensitive personal information about Kansans who lived in households that applied for or received SNAP benefits from Jan. 1, 2020, to July 30, 2025. It includes Social Security numbers, dates of birth and addresses, as well as retailer and business data documenting SNAP usage, the press release said.&nbsp;

“The purpose of the USDA demand is to create a federal database of SNAP participant information that may be disclosed to other federal, state and local agencies,” the release said.

In a letter to Gina Brand, USDA senior policy advisor for integrity, Kansas DCF Secretary Laura Howard said the USDA’s plan to share the data with other agencies to investigate and prosecute violations of the law was part of the reason she would not turn over the data until the lawsuit is resolved.&nbsp;

“The suit argues that the demands for state-held SNAP data is contrary to statute and the Constitution,” Howard said. “Due to the pending litigation, we are forced to deny the USDA’s demand for data at this time. Doing the opposite will place KDCF in a position of potential liability in the event a court finds that the USDA’s demand violates federal law.”

In addition, Howard said the process to gather the requested data would require “significant” time, manpower and expense, and the short July 30 deadline was unreasonable.&nbsp;

“DCF is committed to the security of Kansans’ personal information and maintaining confidentiality consistent with state and federal law,” Howard said in the press release. “This demand for personal information goes beyond the scope of administering the program and puts in jeopardy the privacy of hundreds of thousands of Kansans who depend on SNAP to put food on their tables.”&nbsp;

Howard said DCF will monitor the pending litigation and may re-evaluate its position.&nbsp;

State officials again refuse to release Kansans’ personal data to USDA

SALINE COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a Kansas woman on multiple allegations after a domestic incident in Salina.

Just after noon Tuesday, police were dispatched to Dollar General, 2000 S. 9th Street in Salina after a report of a physical disturbance in the parking lot, according to Salina Police Captain James Feldman.

The incident had been reported by multiple citizens in the area. Both involved parties had left the area prior to officers’ arrival. 

The man involved called police shortly after the initial report and officers made contact with him. The man, a 39 years old of Salina, told police he had been in the Dollar General with a 5-year-old boy and a woman associate identified as 29-year-old Courtney Vaughns of Salina. 

He indicated a verbal argument began in the store and Vaughns walked out followed by the man.&nbsp;

 Vaughns then began swinging at the man and struck him. The man took the vehicle keys from Vaughns and placed the child in the vehicle as Vaughns continued to physically strike him. 

The man then got into the vehicle and Vaughns sprayed pepper spray into the vehicle striking both him and the child with the spray. The man then left the area. They refused medical attention.

Officers located Vaughns in the 1800 block of S. 9th and took her into custody. She was booked into the Saline County Jail on requested charges that include 2 counts of Domestic Battery, 2 counts of Battery, Endangering a Child and Interference with Law Enforcement.

 </figure>SALINE COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a Kansas woman on multiple allegations after a domestic incident in Salina.Just after noon Tuesday, police were dispatched to Dollar General, 2000 S. 9th Street in Salina after a report of a physical disturbance in the parking lot, according to Salina Police Captain James Feldman.The incident had been reported by multiple citizens in the area. Both involved parties had left the area prior to officers’ arrival. The man involved called police shortly after the initial report and officers made contact with him. The man, a 39 years old of Salina, told police he had been in the Dollar General with a 5-year-old boy and a woman associate identified as 29-year-old Courtney Vaughns of Salina. He indicated a verbal argument began in the store and Vaughns walked out followed by the man.&nbsp; Vaughns then began swinging at the man and struck him. The man took the vehicle keys from Vaughns and placed the child in the vehicle as Vaughns continued to physically strike him. The man then got into the vehicle and Vaughns sprayed pepper spray into the vehicle striking both him and the child with the spray. The man then left the area. They refused medical attention.Officers located Vaughns in the 1800 block of S. 9th and took her into custody. She was booked into the Saline County Jail on requested charges that include 2 counts of Domestic Battery, 2 counts of Battery, Endangering a Child and Interference with Law Enforcement.

More than 60 companies, including major tech companies like Google, Amazon and Apple as well as health care giants like UnitedHealth Group and CVS Health, have agreed to share patient data in the system. The initiative will focus on diabetes and weight management,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/artificial-intelligence-ai-nurses-hospitals-health-care-3e41c0a2768a3b4c5e002270cc2abe23">conversational artificial intelligence</a>&nbsp;that helps patients, and digital tools such as QR codes and apps that register patients for check-ins or track medications.

“For decades America’s health care networks have been overdue for a high tech upgrade,” President Donald Trump said during an event with company CEOs at the White House on Wednesday. “The existing systems are often slow, costly and incompatible with one another, but with today’s announcement, we take a major step to bring health care into the digital age.”

The system, spearheaded by an administration that has already freely shared highly personal data about Americans in ways&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-medicaid-trump-ice-ab9c2267ce596089410387bfcb40eeb7">that have tested legal bounds</a>, could put patients' desires for more convenience at their doctor’s office on a collision course with their expectations that their medical information be kept private.

“There are enormous ethical and legal concerns,” said Lawrence Gostin, a Georgetown University law professor who specializes in public health. “Patients across America should be very worried that their medical records are going to be used in ways that harm them and their families.”

Officials at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, who will be in charge of maintaining the system, have said patients will need to opt in for the sharing of their medical records and data, which will be kept secure.

Those officials said patients will benefit from a system that lets them quickly call up their own records without the hallmark difficulties, such as requiring the use of fax machines to share documents, that have prevented them from doing so in the past.

“We're going to have remarkable advances in how consumers can use their own records,” Dr.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/oz-hhs-cms-kennedy-health-medicare-medicaid-ef02cafd3100a4794d8e882fdf2ad7b0">Mehmet Oz</a>, who leads the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, said during the White House event.

Popular weight loss and fitness subscription service Noom, which has signed onto the initiative, will be able to pull medical records after the system's expected launch early next year.

That might include labs or medical tests that the app could use to develop an AI-driven analysis of what might help users lose weight, CEO Geoff Cook told The Associated Press. Apps and health systems will also have access to their competitors' information, too. Noom would be able to access a person's data from Apple Health, for example.

“Right now you have a lot of siloed data,” Cook said.

Patients who travel across the country for treatment at the Cleveland Clinic often have a hard time obtaining all their medical records from various providers, said the hospital system's CEO, Dr. Tomislav Mihaljevic. He said the new system would eliminate that barrier, which sometimes delays treatment or prevents doctors from making an accurate diagnosis because they do not have a full view of a patient's medical history.

Having seamless access to health app data, such as what patients are eating or how much they are exercising, will also help doctors manage obesity and other chronic diseases, Mihaljevic said.

“These apps give us insight about what’s happening with the patient’s health outside of the physician's office,” he said.

CMS will also recommend a list of apps on Medicare.gov that are designed to help people manage chronic diseases, as well as help them select health care providers and insurance plans.

Digital privacy advocates are skeptical that patients will be able to count on their data being stored securely.

The federal government, however, has done little to regulate health apps or telehealth programs, said Jeffrey Chester at the Center for Digital Democracy.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and those within his circle have pushed for more technology in health care, advocating for wearable devices that monitor wellness and telehealth.

Kennedy also sought to collect more data from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kennedy-autism-medicare-medicaid-0507cd8117f299a50bc20b9ea8569048">Americans’ medical records,</a>&nbsp;which he has previously said he wants to use to study autism and vaccine safety. Kennedy has filled the agency with staffers who have a history of working at or running health technology&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/calley-means-rfk-maha-wellness-ethics-f2702b2e26c2883f15dc281f02fe3008">startups and businesses</a>.

CMS already has troves of information on more than 140 million Americans who enroll in Medicare and Medicaid. Earlier this month, the federal agency agreed to hand over its massive database, including home addresses, to deportation officials.

The new initiative would deepen the pool of information on patients for the federal government and tech companies. Medical records typically contain far more sensitive information, such as doctors' notes about conversations with patients and substance abuse or mental health history.

“This scheme is an open door for the further use and monetization of sensitive and personal health information,” Chester said.
