WASHINGTON (AP) —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">President Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;bid farewell to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/elon-musk">Elon Musk</a>&nbsp;in the Oval Office on Friday, providing a cordial conclusion to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/musk-leaves-white-house-doge-savings-trump-666f0c3f890354fe836230826d9faa85">a tumultuous tenure</a>&nbsp;for the billionaire entrepreneur.

Musk is leaving his position spearheading the Department of Government Efficiency, and he'll be rededicating himself to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/musk-trump-tesla-starlink-spacex-twitter-x-robotaxi-selfdriving-austin-e5206c756299f47e81fb90fb4734661a">running his businesses</a>, including electric automaker Tesla, rocket company SpaceX and social media platform X.

Trump credited Musk with “a colossal change in the old ways of doing business in Washington" and said some of his staff would remain in the administration. Musk, who wore all black, including a T-shirt that said “The Dogefather,” nodded along as the president listed contracts that had been cut under his watch.

“I think the DOGE team is doing an incredible job," Musk said after accepting a ceremonial key from the president. "They're going to continue to be doing an incredible job.”

He left a searing mark on the federal bureaucracy, including thousands of employees who were fired or pushed out. Some government functions were eviscerated, such as the U.S. Agency for International Development, which had provided a lifeline for impoverished people around the world. Boston University researchers estimate that hundreds of thousands of people have already died as a result of the cuts.

The State Department responded by saying most of USAID's programs on HIV, known as PEPFAR, remained operational. However, the statement did not address any of the other cuts while calling on “other nations to dramatically increase their humanitarian efforts.”

Despite the upheaval, Musk also fell far short of his goals. After promising to cut $1 trillion or even $2 trillion in federal spending, he lowered expectations to only $150 billion in the current fiscal year.

It's unclear whether that target has been hit. The DOGE website tallies $175 billion in savings, but its information has been riddled with errors and embellishments.

Musk had a bruise next to his right eye in the Oval Office, which he explained by saying he had been “horsing around” with his young son.

“I said, go ahead punch me in the face,” he said. “And he did.”-

Trump said Musk had led the “most sweeping and consequential government reform effort in generations." He suggested that Musk is “really not leaving” and “he's going to be back and forth” to keep tabs on what's happening in the administration.

There were signs, however, that attention was already shifting away from Musk, who once appeared omnipresent in Washington. When Musk was asked about the impact of tariffs on Tesla — something Musk has expressed concerns about in the past — Trump jumped in to answer.

Musk, the world's richest person, recently said he would&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/elon-musk-campaign-donations-ff47d9b4cf02b2e63633edf37823c8ff">reduce his political donations</a>. He was Trump's top donor in last year's presidential campaign.

Trump appeared eager to end&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/photo-gallery/elon-musk-trump-doge-acd2f29172f02b5f692dc94f9b7abe20">Musk's service</a>&nbsp;on a high note.

“This will be his last day, but not really, because he will, always, be with us, helping all the way," Trump wrote on social media on Thursday evening. "Elon is terrific!"

As a special government employee, Musk's position was designed to be temporary. However, he had speculated about staying “indefinitely,” working part time for the administration, if Trump still wanted his help.

Musk has brushed off questions about how DOGE would continue without him, even suggesting it could “gain momentum” in the future.

“DOGE is a way of life,” he told reporters recently. “Like Buddhism.”

FINNEY COUNTY—A southwest Kansas man is under investigation after a crash into a home.

Just after 11 p.m. Thursday, First Responders were dispatched to an injury accident in&nbsp; the 2000 block of Antler Ridge Drive in Garden City, according to a media release.

First responders found a Buick LeSabre had collided with a home. The investigation revealed that the driver, identified as 34-year-old Christopher Peterson, 34, was eastbound on Fair Street at a high rate of speed and lost control of his vehicle. 

The car struck and jumped a curb and veered across a yard before crashing into a house on Antler Ridge Drive. The impact caused the Buick to strike a parked vehicle inside the garage before coming to a rest. Fortunately, the home was unoccupied at the time of the crash.

Peterson was initially reported to be trapped inside the vehicle and refused treatment for minor injuries. Further investigation revealed Peterson was allegedly driving under the influence, and he was arrested. He was bookedk into the Finney County Jail on requested charges of DUI, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Speed Too Fast For Conditions, Driving Left of Center, and No Proof of Insurance.Another stark and sobering reminder of the dangers of impaired driving.&nbsp;

In a lengthy note posted to her official website on Friday, Swift announced: “All of the music I’ve ever made now belongs to me.”

The pop star said she purchased her catalog of recordings — originally released through&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/5725558c87b14859b6a8d4760b7f0232">Big Machine Records —</a>&nbsp;from their most recent owner, the private equity firm Shamrock Capital. She did not disclose the amount.

In recent years, Swift has been rerecording and releasing her first six albums in an attempt to regain control of her music.

“I can’t thank you enough for helping to reunite me with this art that I have dedicated my life to, but have never owned until now,” Swift addressed fans in the post. “The best things that have ever been mine … finally actually are.”

“We are thrilled with this outcome and are so happy for Taylor,” Shamrock Capital said in a statement.

Swift's rerecordings were instigated by&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/scooter-braun-what-to-know-d5669e8b0fe641dd268c2e2cf88b0e24">Hybe America CEO Scooter Braun’s</a>&nbsp;purchase and sale of her early catalog and represents Swift’s effort to control her own songs and how they’re used. Brittany Mahomes celebrates Taylor Swift's big music news

FORD COUNTY&nbsp;– Agents with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) arrested a Kansas law enforcement officer for child sex crimes.

On Friday, May 30, just before 7 a.m., KBI agents arrested 42-year-old Erik Lalicker, of Ashland, in Dodge City. Lalicker was arrested for seven counts of sexual exploitation of a child, according to a media release from the KBI.

Lalicker served as a Kansas Gaming and Racing Commission (KGRC) Enforcement Agent. Lalicker is currently on administrative leave pending the investigation.

The KBI Child Victims Unit began investigating after a cyber tip was submitted to National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

Following the arrest, Lalicker was booked into the Ford County Jail on a $75,000 bond.&nbsp; All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Friday’s most influential losses came from several Big Tech stocks.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nvidia-earnings-report-quarterly-ai-chips-77c031067a61996ef4baa2ae3eb10a81">Nvidia</a>&nbsp;fell 2.9% to give back some of its gain from earlier in the week after it topped analysts’ expectations for profit in the latest quarter. It was the single heaviest weight by far on the S&amp;P 500.

On the winning side of Wall Street was Ulta Beauty, which rose 11.8% after the retailer reported stronger sales and profit than analysts forecast. It also raised the top end of its forecasted range for revenue this fiscal year even though CEO Kecia Steelman called the operating environment “fluid.”

Costco climbed 3.1% after the retailer’s results and revenue for the latest quarter edged past analysts’ expectations.

Red Robin Gourmet Burger soared 62.9% after reporting a profit for the latest quarter, when analysts expected a loss.

Shares of SharpLink Gaming fell 3.2% to trim their gain for the week to a still-whopping 1,041.4% after the marketing company said it would raise $425 million to buy the cryptocurrency on the Ethereum blockchain. The company delivers leads to U.S. sportsbooks and global casino companies, and it has been expanding into the global crypto gaming market.

All told, the S&amp;P 500 edged down 0.48 to 5,911.69 points. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 54.34 to 42,270.07, and the Nasdaq composite slipped 62.11 to 19,113.77.

In the bond market, Treasury yields eased after a report showed that the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-spending-economy-b96e94fc971045c2a50e642fa85d4397">measure of inflation that the Federal Reserve likes to use</a>&nbsp;was slightly lower in April than economists expected.

A separate report from the University of Michigan said that sentiment among U.S. consumers was better in May than economists expected. Sentiment improved in the back half of the month after Trump paused many of his tariffs on China.

“Overall, consumers see the outlook for the economy as no worse than last month, but they remained quite worried about the future,” according to Survey of Consumers Director Joanne Hsu.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury eased to 4.39% from 4.43% late Thursday. The two-year Treasury yield, which more closely tracks expectations for what the Fed will do with overnight interest rates, slipped to 3.90% from 3.92%.

The Fed has left its benchmark borrowing rate steady so far this year after cutting it at the end of 2024 to give the economy more breathing room. Fed officials have said they want to wait longer to see how tariffs will affect inflation and the economy before making their next move. Wall Street glides to the end of its best month since 2023

NEW YORK (AP) — Loretta Swit, who&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/television">won two Emmy Awards</a>&nbsp;playing Major Margaret Houlihan, the demanding head nurse of a behind-the-lines surgical unit during the Korean War on the pioneering hit TV series “M.A.S.H.,” has died. She was 87.

Publicist Harlan Boll says Swit died Friday at her home in New York City, likely from natural causes.

Swit and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/alan-alda">Alan Alda</a>&nbsp;were the longest-serving cast members on “M.A.S.H.,” which was based on Robert Altman’s 1970 film, which was itself based on a novel by Richard Hooker, the pseudonym of H. Richard Hornberger.

The CBS show aired for 11 years from 1972 to 1983, revolving around life at the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, which gave the show its name. The two-and-a-half-hour finale on Feb. 28, 1983, lured over 100 million viewers, the most-watched episode of any scripted series ever.

Rolling Stone magazine put “M.A.S.H.” at No. 25 of the best TV shows of all time, while Time Out put it at No. 34. It won the Impact Award at the 2009 TV Land annual awards. It won a Peabody Award in 1975 “for the depth of its humor and the manner in which comedy is used to lift the spirit and, as well, to offer a profound statement on the nature of war.”

In Altman’s 1970 film, Houlihan was a one-dimensional character — a sex-crazed bimbo who earned the nickname “Hot Lips.” Her intimate moments were broadcast to the entire camp after somebody planted a microphone under her bed.

Sally Kellerman played Houlihan in the movie version and Swit took it over for TV, eventually deepening and creating her into a much fuller character. The sexual appetite was played down and she wasn’t even called “Hot Lips” in the later years.

The growing awareness of feminism in the ’70s spurred Houlihan’s transformation from caricature to real person, but a lot of the change was due to Swit’s influence on the scriptwriters.

“Around the second or third year I decided to try to play her as a real person, in an intelligent fashion, even if it meant hurting the jokes,” Swit told Suzy Kalter, author of “The Complete Book of ‘M.A.S.H.’”

“To oversimplify it, I took each traumatic change that happened in her life and kept it. I didn’t go into the next episode as if it were a different character in a different play. She was a character in constant flux; she never stopped developing.”

The justices lifted&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-administration-venezuelans-tps-federal-judge-d4044f1fc7cb69985add060aeaae8731">a lower-court order</a>&nbsp;that kept humanitarian parole protections in place for more than 500,000 migrants from four countries: Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela. The court has also allowed the administration to revoke temporary legal status from about 350,000 Venezuelan migrants in another case.

Republican President Donald Trump promised on the campaign trail to deport millions of people, and in office has sought to dismantle Biden administration polices that created ways for migrants to live legally in the U.S.

Trump amplified false rumors that Haitian immigrants in Ohio with legal status under the humanitarian parole program were abducting and eating pets during his only debate with President Joe Biden, according to court documents.

His administration filed an emergency appeal to the Supreme Court after a federal judge in Boston blocked the administration’s push to end the program.

Justice Kentanji Brown Jackson wrote in dissent that the effect of the court’s order is “to have the lives of half a million migrants unravel all around us before the courts decide their legal claims.” Justice Sonia Sotomayor joined the dissent.

Jackson echoed what U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani wrote in ruling that ending the legal protections early would leave people with a stark choice: flee the country or risk losing everything. Talwani, an appointee of Democratic President Barack Obama, found that revocations of parole can be done, but on a case-by-case basis.

Her ruling came in mid-April, shortly before permits were due to be canceled. An appeals court refused to lift her order.

The Supreme Court's order is not a final ruling, but it means the protections will not be in place while the case proceeds. It now returns to the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston.

The Justice Department argues that the protections were always meant to be temporary, and the Department of Homeland Security has the power to revoke them without court interference. The administration says Biden granted the parole en masse, and the law doesn’t require ending it on an individual basis.

Taking on each case individually would be a “gargantuan task,” and slow the government’s efforts to press for their removal, Solicitor General D. John Sauer argued.

Biden used humanitarian parole more than any other president, employing a special presidential authority in effect since 1952.

Beneficiaries included the 532,000 people who have come to the United States with financial sponsors since late 2022, leaving home countries fraught with “instability, dangers and deprivations,” as attorneys for the migrants said. They had to fly to the U.S. at their own expense and have a financial sponsor to qualify for the designation, which lasts for two years.

The Trump administration’s decision was the first-ever mass revocation of humanitarian parole, attorneys for the migrants said. They called the Trump administration’s moves “the largest mass illegalization event in modern American history.”

The case is the latest in a string of emergency appeals the administration has made to the Supreme Court, many of them related to immigration.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A man accused in the shooting death of a pregnant Kansas woman made his first court appearance in the case Thursday.

Matthew Criscenzo, 19 of Wichita, is charged with 1st degree murder and aggravated battery, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office The deadly shooting&nbsp; occurred early Sunday in Wichita.

Police identified he victim as 20-year-old Naomi Oglesby, a resident of Wichita. At the time of the incident, she was pregnant, according to Office Rick Pena. Police arrested Criscenso in the 700 Block of Laura Street just before 10a.m. Sunday and booked him into jail. Criscenso is due back in court on June 12. He is being held on a half-million dollar bond, according to the district attorney's office.

TOPEKA — Members of the Kansas satanist group appear to be off the hook for criminal charges that stemmed from a highly anticipated, hotly criticized black mass demonstration at the Statehouse that resulted in&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/03/28/loud-boisterous-rival-protests-of-religious-freedom-among-catholics-and-satanists-turn-violent/">clashes</a>&nbsp;with Catholics and, ultimately, their arrests.

Shawnee County prosecutors decided Wednesday not to pursue charges against Michael Stewart, leader of the Satanic Grotto, and two other group members. After the court hearing, Stewart returned to the Statehouse to discuss the details of his next protest with law enforcement.

Attracting nationwide attention, Stewart’s satanic protest in March drew ire from elected and religious officials. Hundreds gathered at the Statehouse in Topeka&nbsp;on March 28, some in support of the satanic organization, which is a nonprofit not affiliated with the Church of Satan, and others in vehement opposition.

About 11:30 a.m., following speeches, prayers, chants and sign-waving on the lawn of the Statehouse in Topeka, Stewart entered the building to perform a satanic ceremony, called the black mass, which can involve desecrating a host. Across the street,&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/03/28/kansas-city-archbishop-preaches-against-satanism-atheism-in-prayerful-ceremonies/">a Catholic mass and prayer service</a>&nbsp;took place, where archbishop of Kansas City Joseph Naumann lambasted nonbelievers. Naumann also&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/03/18/kansas-legislators-archbishop-take-action-against-satanists-and-their-planned-black-mass/">tried to sue</a>&nbsp;Stewart before the protests, falsely accusing him of stealing a consecrated host.&nbsp;

Stewart had a permit to demonstrate outside on Statehouse grounds and was warned as he entered the building that any protest would violate that permit.

He walked to the first-floor rotunda, accompanied by supporters, reporters and watchful counter-protestors and began a dedication to Satan.

A man and woman with young children interrupted him, physically intervening. Stewart turned away, and then a counter-protestor, Marcus Schroeder, attempted twice to grab papers from Stewart’s hands. On Schroeder’s second reach, Stewart punched him twice in the face before a law enforcement officer took his legs out from underneath him.

Stewart and two supporters were booked in jail and charged with unlawful gathering. Stewart faced an additional charge of disorderly conduct.

At a hearing Wednesday, county prosecutors said they don’t plan to pursue charges at this time, Stewart told Kansas Reflector. However, the statute of limitations lasts five years.

A call to the Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office seeking confirmation of the charges was not immediately returned Wednesday.

After the hearing, Stewart traveled a few blocks to the Capitol building, where he talked about plans for a nighttime protest in August with a law enforcement officer to preemptively soothe any concerns.

Planned for early August, Stewart envisions the “Witches Hour Protest” taking place from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. on the Statehouse’s south lawn.

He plans to extend the invitation to Wiccans, pagans and “any kind of witchy inclined hippie we can find.”

“We’re happy that we’re able to get back at it,” Stewart said.

He added the members of the grotto have been “restless,” as they awaited their fate.

Kansas satanists plan new protest, won’t face charges in Catholic clash at Statehouse

PAWNEE COUNTY – Dustin Barnes, 48 of Larned, appeared Wednesday morning in the custody of the Pawnee County Sheriff for Preliminary Hearing on felony charges of&nbsp; Battery of a Law Enforcement Officer resulting in bodily harm; and Interference with Law Enforcement; Resisting Felony Arrest, according to Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett.

Prior to the commencement of the hearing, the parties advised the Court they had reached a plea agreement.  In exchange for the defendant’s plea to Count 1 as amended, the State agreed to dismiss Count 2 and amend Count 1 to simply Battery of a Law Enforcement Officer, a Class A person misdemeanor. Barnes entered a Guilty plea to the amended charge of Battery of a Law Enforcement Officer.  

In support of the plea, Pawnee County Attorney Douglas McNett advised the Court that had the matter preceded to trial the State would have presented evidence that the defendant was previously charged with separate physical altercations that occurred at the Pawnee Plaza in Larned, Kansas on December 10, 2024, and January 13, 2025.  Barnes subsequently entered a No Contest plea to Disorderly Conduct on March 31, 2025, due to the incidents and was ordered to pay court costs and a fine.

  As a result of the altercations, however, the facility gave Barnes a “No Trespass Advisory” and directed he not to be on the premises again.  On the morning of May 12, 2025, Larned Police Department Dispatch was notified that Barnes had been banging on the door of the facility manager’s Larned residence. No charges were requested by the manager at that time, but the family asked law enforcement to notify Barnes not to come back to the residence.

Later that morning, a Larned Police Department Sergeant located Barnes walking west of the Edwards Park Public Golf Course near the driving range and golf cart storage buildings. Before the officer could exit his patrol vehicle, Barnes struck the officer through the open driver side window an estimated eight to ten times with a closed fist. 

 As a result, the officer deployed his taser through the open window.  A taser was deployed a second time when Barnes refused to comply with commands to put his hands behind his back and began walking away. The officer was treated at the scene for minor injuries.  Pursuant to protocol, EMS also checked the defendant and determined he did not suffer any injuries other than the puncture wounds from the taser deployment.  The attack on the officer was captured by the officer’s patrol car in-car video.  The second deployment of non-lethal force was captured on the officer’s body cam which activated once the officer exited the patrol vehicle.

After accepting the plea,&nbsp; Magistrate Judge Julie Cowell sentenced Barnes to 12 months on probation with an underlying 12 month jail sentence.&nbsp;

Plea deal for Kansas man in attack that injured police officer

RENO COUNTY —Three dogs died in a house fire Thursday in Hutchinson.

Just before 8p.m., crews were dispatched to a home in 7000 block of North Lorraine, according to a media release from the Hutchinson Fire Department.

While on the way to the home, firefighters were informed that the occupants were not inside the home, but several dogs remained inside.

Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke coming from the front door and fire coming from the rear of the single-family home. Crews launched an aggressive interior attack while also searching for occupants and pets.

Because the house was located in a non-hydrated area, rural water supply operations were initiated. Crews were able to knock down the fire quickly and remove three dogs from the home. Despite attempts to resuscitate them using specialized animal lifesaving equipment, all three dogs died from their injuries.

No injuries were reported among residents or emergency personnel. One occupant received assistance from the American Red Cross. The home sustained significant smoke and fire damage throughout.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Hutchinson Fire Department’s Fire Marshal’s Office.

Kennedy Jr.</a>, which decried America’s food supply, pesticides and prescription drugs.

Kennedy’s wide-ranging “Make America Healthy Again”&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kennedy-vaccines-food-supply-pesticides-prescription-drugs-de043eb2e0ef7de889416b98141b9078">report</a>, released last week, cited hundreds of studies, but a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.notus.org/health-science/make-america-healthy-again-report-citation-errors" target="_blank">closer look by the news organization NOTUS</a>&nbsp;found that some of those studies did not actually exist.

Asked about the report’s problems, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the report will be updated.

“I understand there was some formatting issues with the MAHA report that are being addressed and the report will be updated.” Leavitt told reporters during her briefing. “But it does not negate the substance of the report, which, as you know, is one of the most transformative health reports that has ever been released by the federal government.

Kennedy has repeatedly said he would bring “radical transparency” and “gold-standard” science to the public health agencies. But the secretary refused to release details about who authored the 72-page report, which calls for increased scrutiny of the childhood vaccine schedule and describes the nation’s children as overmedicated and undernourished.

Leavitt said that the White House has “complete confidence” in Kennedy.

“Minor citation and formatting errors have been corrected,” HHS Spokesman Andrew Nixon said in an emailed statement. He described the report as a “historic and transformative assessment by the federal government to understand the chronic disease epidemic afflicting our nation’s children.”

NOTUS reported Thursday that seven of the more than 500 studies cited in the report did not appear to have ever been published. An author of one study confirmed that while she conducted research on the topics of anxiety in children, she never authored the report listed. Some studies were also misinterpreted in the MAHA report. The problematic citations were on topics around children’s screen time, medication use and anxiety.

Kennedy’s MAHA report had already been stoking concerns among Trump loyalists, including farmers who criticized how the report characterized the chemicals sprayed on U.S. crops.

The report is supposed to be used to develop policy recommendations that will be released later this year. The White House has requested a $500 million boost in funding from Congress for Kennedy’s MAHA initiative.

DOUGLAS COUNTY —Detectives working to determine who stabbed an elderly woman in her home in Lawrence now say they do not believe this incident was criminal in nature. No suspect is being sought, and there is no known threat to the public related to this investigation.

Just after 1p.m. Thursday, officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Beatnik Court in Lawrence and found the woman inside the home with life-threatening injuries, according to a social media report. Police did not know when the&nbsp; attack occurred.

The woman was alone and not able to provide significant details to first responders.&nbsp;&nbsp;Detectives were able to speak briefly with her before she was taken into surgery.

 Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical medics transported her to an area trauma center, accompanied by an officer.

Police update details of knife attack on elderly Kan. woman in her home

NEW CENTURY, Kansas. –&nbsp;Kansas Department of Corrections resident Anthony Mansfield has been placed on escape status at approximately 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday after not returning to the Johnson County Department of Corrections (JCDOC) Adult Residential Center (ARC) or reporting to his job Wednesday, according to a media release from the KDOC.

Mansfield, a 36-year old white male, is considered dangerous. He was reported missing when the resident could not be located at the minimum-security unit. This walkaway does not impact the security or operations of the medium-maximum secure compound.

Mansfield is 5-feet, 8-inches tall, and weighs 185 pounds with an average build. He has brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a&nbsp;white t-shirt with black designs, long black sleeve undershirt, brown boots, brown baseball hat and stonewashed jeans .

Mansfield was convicted in Johnson County for eight-months of incarceration for criminal damage to property convictions. He is serving that sentence at the JCDOC-ARC from which he walked away. Under an agreement between the KDOC and JCDOC, residents who have release plans that are appropriate to Johnson County are housed at the ARC.

This walkaway does not impact the security or operations of the medium-maximum secure compound.Mansfield is 5-feet, 8-inches tall, and weighs 185 pounds with an average build. He has brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a&nbsp;white t-shirt with black designs, long black sleeve undershirt, brown boots, brown baseball hat and stonewashed jeans .Mansfield was convicted in Johnson County for eight-months of incarceration for criminal damage to property convictions. He is serving that sentence at the JCDOC-ARC from which he walked away. Dangerous inmate still missing from Kan. work release facility

OXON HILL, Md. (AP) — Faizan Zaki's enthusiasm for spelling nearly got the better of him. Ultimately, his joyful approach made him the Scripps National Spelling Bee champion.

The favorite entering the bee after his runner-up finish last year — during which he never misspelled a word in a conventional spelling round, only to lose a lightning-round tiebreaker that he didn't practice for — the shaggy-haired Faizan wore the burden of expectations lightly, sauntering to the microphone in a black hoodie and spelling his words with casual glee.

Throughout Thursday night's finals, the 13-year-old from Allen, Texas, looked like a champion in waiting. Then he nearly threw it away. But even a shocking moment of overconfidence couldn't prevent him from seizing the title of best speller in the English language.

With the bee down to three spellers, Sarvadnya Kadam and Sarv Dharavane missed their words back-to-back, putting Faizan two words away from victory. The first was "commelina," but instead of asking the requisite questions — definition, language of origin — to make sure he knew it, Faizan let his showman's instincts take over.

"K-A-M," he said, then stopped himself. "OK, let me do this. Oh, shoot!"

"Just ring the bell," he told head judge Mary Brooks, who obliged.

"So now you know what happens," Brooks said, and the other two spellers returned to the stage.

Later, standing next to the trophy with confetti at his feet, Faizan said: "I'm definitely going to be having nightmares about that tonight."

Even pronouncer Jacques Bailly tried to slow Faizan down before his winning word, "eclaircissement," but Faizan didn't ask a single question before spelling it correctly, and he pumped his fists and collapsed to the stage after saying the final letter.

The bee celebrated its 100th anniversary this year, and Faizan may be the first champion who's remembered more for a word he got wrong than one he got right.

"I think he cared too much about his aura," said Bruhat Soma, Faizan's buddy who beat him in the "spell-off" tiebreaker last year.

Faizan had a more nuanced explanation: After not preparing for the spell-off last year, he overcorrected, emphasizing speed during his study sessions.

Although Bruhat was fast last year when he needed to be, he followed the familiar playbook for champion spellers: asking thorough questions, spelling slowly and metronomically, showing little emotion. Those are among the hallmarks of well-coached spellers, and Faizan had three coaches: Scott Remer, Sam Evans and Sohum Sukhantankar.

None of them could turn Faizan into a robot on stage.

"He's crazy. He's having a good time, and he's doing what he loves, which is spelling," Evans said.

Said Zaki Anwar, Faizan's father: "He's the GOAT. I actually believe that. He's really good, man. He's been doing it for so long, and he knows the dictionary in and out."

After last year's bee had little drama before an abrupt move to the spell-off, Scripps tweaked the competition rules, giving judges more leeway to let the competition play out before going to the tiebreaker. The nine finalists delivered.

During one stretch, six spellers got 28 consecutive words right, and there were three perfect rounds during the finals. The last time there was a single perfect round was the infamous 2019 bee, which ended in an eight-way tie.

Sarv, an 11-year-old fifth-grader from Dunwoody, Georgia, who ultimately finished third, would have been the youngest champion since Nihar Janga in 2016. He has three years of eligibility remaining.

The most poised and mature of the final three, Sarvadnya — who's from Visalia, California — ends his career as the runner-up. He's 14 and in the eighth grade, which means he has aged out of the competition. It's not a bad way to go out, considering that Faizan became just the fifth runner-up in a century to come back and win, and the first since Sean Conley in 2001.

Including Faizan, whose parents emigrated from southern India, 30 of the past 36 champions have been Indian American, a run that began with Nupur Lala's victory in 1999, which was later featured in the documentary "Spellbound." Lala was among the dozens of past champions who attended this year and signed autographs for spellers, families and bee fans to honor the anniversary.

With the winner's haul of $52,500 added to his second-place prize of $25,000, Faizan increased his bee earnings to $77,500. His big splurge with his winnings last year? A $1,500 Rubik's cube with 21 squares on each side. This time, he said he'd donate a large portion of his winnings to charity.

The bee began in 1925 when the Louisville Courier-Journal invited other newspapers to host spelling bees and send their champions to Washington. For the past 14 years, Scripps has hosted the competition at a convention center just outside the nation's capital, but the bee returns downtown next year to Constitution Hall, a nearly century-old concert venue near the White House.

He competed in the 2019 bee as a 7-year-old, getting in through a wild-card program that has since been discontinued. He qualified again in 2023 and made the semifinals before last year's second-place finish."One thing that differentiates him is he really has a passion for this. In his free time, when he's not studying for the bee, he's literally looking up archaic, obsolete words that have no chance of being asked," Bruhat said. "I don't think he cares as much about the title as his passion for language and words."Faizan had no regrets about showing that enthusiasm, even though it nearly cost him."No offense to Bruhat, but I think he really took the bee a little too seriously," Faizan said.
