WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The Fort Hays State men's wrestling team dropped a conference dual against No. 14 Central Missouri on Friday (Jan. 23), 41-3. The Tigers are now 3-7 overall and 1-1 in MIAA action, while the Mules improve to 7-4 on the year and 1-0 in league competition.
The Tigers were open at 125 pounds, the first of eight-straight victories for UCM. After a pair of technical falls, Jarret Mader was up at 149 pounds. The junior took a 5-4 lead into the third period, but a takedown with 80 seconds left was enough to give UCM's Trey Dillow an 8-5 win.
After facing off in the title bout at UCM's Roger Denker Open just five days ago, Cason Lindsey and fifth-ranked Gage Bernall faced off again at 165 pounds. Both wrestlers made good attempts for a takedown over the first two periods, but neither could convert. Tied at 1-1 in the third period after a pair of escapes, Bernall sealed a 4-1 decision with a takedown with just 31 seconds remaining.
Ernesto Duenez followed at 174 pounds and fell behind 3-0 less than 30 seconds into the bout. But the redshirt-sophomore fought back, recording a trio of escapes to close within 4-3 in the third period. A late flurry of action didn't yield any points, however, giving the Mules a 29-0 advantage.
After a pin at 184 pounds the Tigers got on the board at 197 pounds. Ryan Patterson fell behind less than 10 seconds into the bout, but quickly escaped to make the score 3-1. The junior took a 4-3 lead with a takedown of his own two minutes later before a late escape tied the score at the end of the first period. Patterson took a 7-5 lead late in the second frame with a takedown before a quick escape in the third period made it an 8-5 advantage. The Peyton, Colo. native put things out of reach with a third takedown in the final minute, ultimately locking up a 13-9 decision. UCM finished things off with a pin at 285 pounds.
The Tigers will be back home on Saturday, February 7 when they host top-ranked Central Oklahoma beginning at 2 p.m.
