The girls game had a little bit of everything in a 47-44 Hays High victory over Abilene Tuesday night.&nbsp; The Indians used a 16-3 run in the second quarter to build a 27-14 lead at halftime.&nbsp;

The Indians led by thirteen still with 4:40 left in the third quarter but scored just six points over the next twelve minutes.&nbsp; Abilene used the time to outscore Hays 23-6 run and lead 44-40 with forty seconds left in the game.

Hays missed two free throws with just over 37 seconds remaining but Re Green grabbed the offensive rebound and fed Tasiah Nunnery for the final of her career high 21 points while closing the gap down to 44-42.&nbsp; Abilene never shot again in the game as they turned the ball over the next three possessions.&nbsp; 

Following the first turnover the Indians missed a shot but Green again cleaned up the glass and her own put back tied the game at 44.&nbsp; She was fouled on the play and banked in the free throw for a 45-44 lead with ten seconds remaining.&nbsp; Brooklyn Schaffer made both ends of a one and one opportunity with five seconds left after the next turnover for the final margin of 47-44.

Hays improves to 5-12 on the season and Abilene now has the same record.&nbsp; The two will rematch in Abilene next Thursday to end the regular season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dylan Ruder scored at the buzzer ending the first quarter for 12-11 Hays lead and never trailed again on their way to a 56-46 win over state ranked Abilene on Tuesday night.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A 10-0 run that ended the first quarter and began the second quarter pushed the Indian advantage to seven for the first of eight times.&nbsp; Hays led by seven for most of the second quarter before Abilene tipped in a missed shot as the halftime horn sounded to trim score to 25-20.

Abilene tied the game two times in the second half.&nbsp; A 7-0 run in the third quarter tied the game at 29 points and another 7-0 that began at the end of the third and ended in the early fourth time the game at 38.&nbsp; The Cowboys had a chance to take the lead on a free throw on the basket that tied game but missed the shot short.&nbsp;

TJ Nunnery scored just twenty seconds later to give the Indians the lead and spark a 12-3 run.&nbsp; Five different Indians scored during the run that gave Hays a 50-41 advantage with 2:35 remaining.&nbsp; Abilene had one last charge as they converted a three point play and closed the gap down to 50-46 with just under ninety seconds left to play.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Indian defense though didn't allow another point while they made four of seven free throws wrapped around a Dylan Ruder layup.&nbsp;

Hays improves to 11-6 on the year as Abilene now has the same record.&nbsp; The two will match up in Abilene next Thursday to end the regular season.

Jace Linenberger led the team with 12 points, Jason Krannawitter scored 11 while Dylan Ruder added ten.

Hays sweeps Abilene at home



HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Softball swept its home-opening doubleheader on Tuesday against Kansas Wesleyan, winning by a score of 5-4 twice. The Tigers needed eight innings to defeat the Coyotes in the first contest of the evening. FHSU moved to 8-4 overall, running its win streak to three games, while Kansas Wesleyan dropped to 3-3 overall.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 5, Kansas Wesleyan 4 (8 inn.) Fort Hays State needed a late rally to get past Kansas Wesleyan in the opener of the twinbill. Kansas Wesleyan built a 4-0 lead through two innings, only to see FHSU rally for two in the fourth, one in the sixth, and one in the seventh to tie the game. FHSU completed the comeback with a run in the eighth, securing an extra-inning win for the second straight game (defeated Oklahoma Baptist 1-0 in eight innings back on Sunday).

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5346">Megan Jamison</a>&nbsp;had to navigate her way through four innings in the circle for FHSU to start the game. She surrendered seven of Kansas Wesleyan's nine hits and struck out two, but only one of her four runs allowed were earned due to defensive miscues by the Tigers in the second inning that allowed three runs to cross the plate. Jamison worked around baserunners in the third and fourth innings to keep the Tiger deficit at four.

Kansas Wesleyan opened the door for the Tigers to climb back in the game in the fourth. After&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5342">Terran Caldwell</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5358">Kristen Reed</a>&nbsp;started the inning with back-to-back singles, they came in to score on a fielding error with two outs that cut the lead in half to 4-2.

Tiger softball edges Coyotes for doubleheader sweep



COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Basketball announced its 2020 Men's and Women's 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament teams, which includes four men and four women. Former FHSU Men's Basketball standout Dominique Jones was one of four players named to the men's team. A total of 16 men were invited to training camp Feb. 13-14 in Chicago and Jones emerged as one of four players chosen with the task of qualifying the United States for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

The 2020 FIBA 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament will be March 18-22 in Bengaluru, India. The top three finishing men's and women's 3x3 teams will earn berths into the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games 3x3 basketball competition.

3x3 basketball is played on a half court with a 10-minute clock, and a 12-second shot clock, the first team to 21 points, or the team in the lead at the end of regulation.

As per FIBA regulations, all teams taking part in the FIBA 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament must include at least two athletes ranked among the federation's top 10 FIBA 3x3 athletes.

Jones will join Canyon Barry, Robbie Hummel, and Kareem Maddox as the four players to represent the United States. Jones, Hummel, and Maddox are the top three ranked FIBA 3x3 men's players from the United States. Jones is currently the No. 1 ranked player from the United States in the FIBA 3x3 World Rankings, while holding a world ranking of No. 9.

Jones was an All-America performer at Fort Hays State in 2011, while Hummel was an All-America performer at Purdue University in 2010 and 2012 and went on to play for the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA for two seasons. Barry was the CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year for NCAA Division I at the University of Florida in 2017 and currently plays for the Iowa Wolves of the NBA G League. Maddox was an all-conference performer and conference defensive player of the year at Princeton University in 2011.

An interesting note about two of the four chosen to the USA 3x3 Qualifying Team for 2020 is their unique free-throw shooting styles. As many FHSU fans remember, Dominique Jones shoots his free throws one-handed, without placing a guide hand on the ball. Canyon Barry, son of NBA Hall of Famer Rick Barry, shoots his free throws underhand just like his father did.

Jones has enjoyed a tremendous professional career on the FIBA 3x3 World Tour. He currently holds the No. 1 national ranking in the FIBA points system for players from the United States on the World Tour, and sits among the top 10 players in the world. Jones has helped his 3x3 team from New York/Harlem to several team titles in FIBA World Tour tournaments over the past few years.

Jones was a two-year standout player at Fort Hays State, helping the Tigers to NCAA Tournament appearances in 2009-10 and 2010-11 as the team's point guard. He nearly scored 1,000 points in his two years, finishing with 983. He also averaged 5.1 assists per game in his career, fifth-best in program history with a total of 324. With his unique one-handed free-throw shooting style, Jones shot 80 percent at the line in his career at FHSU. He shot 40.2 percent from beyond the 3-point line, draining 132 shots from long range.

Jones was an NABC All-America selection as a senior in 2010-11 with 592 points and 207 assists for the season (17.9 ppg, 6.3 apg). He was a two-time All-MIAA First Team selection and helped guide the Tigers to an MIAA Tournament Championship in 2011. He helped the team to a record of 49-14 over the two years, reaching No. 3 in the NABC national rankings both seasons. He is one of four players to earn All-America honors under current FHSU head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=780">Mark Johnson</a>. Prior to his time at FHSU, Jones was a two-time all-region performer at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, a member of the NJCAA.

Following his time at FHSU, Jones went on to play professional basketball in Europe before returning to the United States. He enjoyed a brief stint with the Harlem Globetrotters in the summer of 2015 before turning his focus to traveling the world playing in FIBA 3x3 World Tour events. Now he gets a chance to help Team USA qualify for the 2020 Olympics in 3x3 Basketball.

The Fort Hays State Softball doubleheader with Kansas Wesleyan University has been moved up a day to Tuesday due to forecasted weather. The games were originally scheduled for Wednesday, but the weather forecast in the Hays area does not look favorable, which prompted the change. The doubleheader will begin at 3 pm.

McPHERSON, Kan. - Sarah Zimmerman made history Saturday, becoming Hays High's first ever qualifier for the KSHSAA Girls State Wrestling Tournament. Zimmerman placed fifth at this past weekends regional in McPherson.

Zimmerman (21-7) won her first three matches by fall before losing to Lakin's Isabell Ortiz by a fall in the semifinals. She then lost by fall to Abilene's Skuleigh Pflaster in the consolation semifinals before defeating Holcomb's Amilia Martinez by fall in the fifth place match.

It keeps the Super Bowl champions as one of the last NFL teams to take their late-summer workouts on the road. 

Chiefs President Mark Donovan says the contract includes an option to extend the partnership two more years and includes several provisions requiring updates to the Division II school. 

Missouri Western will develop new seating at the practice fields and renovate Scanlon Hall that houses Chiefs players, coaches and staff.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Fort Hays State moved to 6-4 overall on the season with a split of its games on Sunday in Oklahoma City at Tom Heath Field, home of the Oklahoma Christian University softball team. The Tigers fell in their first contest of the day to Colorado Christian, 7-2, before posting a history-making win with a 1-0, 8-inning, win over Oklahoma Baptist. In the win over OBU,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5348">Michaelanne Nelson</a>&nbsp;became the first player in FHSU history to throw an extra-inning no-hitter and sixth player in program history to throw a complete-game no-hitter.

Colorado Christian 7, Fort Hays State 2 The Tigers struggled with situational hitting in their first game for the second straight day, not able to push runs across in good run-scoring opportunities early.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5352">Hannah Gates</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5342">Terran Caldwell</a>&nbsp;opened the game with back-to-back singles, but there was no more movement after a fielder's choice, pop up, and foul pop up.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5350">Lily Sale</a>&nbsp;opened the third inning with a single and then took an extra base when the CCU defense left second base vacated. The next batter struck out, but Caldwell singled to left center. Sale held up to see if the ball would be caught, placing runners at first and third, but then a pop up and ground out ended the threat.

After working a 1-2-3 first inning,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5344">Hailey Chapman</a>&nbsp;struggled with command to open the second inning throwing six straight balls. With a runner already on first, the second batter took advantage of being ahead in the count and roped a ball for a double, putting runners at second and third. A sacrifice fly plated Colorado Christian's first run.

The Cougars benefitted from a Tiger throwing error with two outs in the fourth, scoring two runs on a routine grounder that should have been the end of the inning. CCU led 3-0 after four innings. The Cougars tacked on two more in the fifth with an RBI triple and RBI single.

Fort Hays State finally cashed in during the sixth inning after Caldwell singled and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5358">Kristen Reed</a>&nbsp;walked to open the frame. CCU made a pitching change with Reamer entering the circle. The Tigers struggled to move the runners again with a pop up and a strikeout, but&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5340">Bailey Boxberger</a>&nbsp;kept the inning alive with a single to the right side, loading the bases.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5349">Grace Philop</a>&nbsp;then delivered a clutch 2-RBI single up the middle, making the score 5-2 in favor of CCU. The Tigers nearly plated another run as&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5357">Loren Beggs</a>&nbsp;hit a drive to left center, but the center fielder ran it down to end the Tiger threat.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5356">Mahealani Haegele</a>&nbsp;saw her first action as a Tiger in the pitching circle during the sixth. With one out, Chapman allowed two batters to reach base, prompting the change. The Cougars had two straight singles to plate a run and a sacrifice fly plated another, pushing their advantage back to five. Haegele recorded her first strikeout as a Tiger to end the inning.

Caldwell finished the game 3-of-4 at the plate, the only Tiger with a multi-hit game. Chapman took the loss, moving to 3-3 on the season. She lasted 5.1 innings with five strikeouts, while allowing five hits and four walks. Romero picked up the win for Colorado Christian, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

Fort Hays State 1, Oklahoma Baptist 0 (8 innings) After fighting off some first-inning shakiness in control,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5348">Michaelanne Nelson</a>&nbsp;settled in nicely the remainder of her no-hit bid. However, seven innings was not enough to determine a winner, so Nelson had to toss an extra no-hit frame to keep Oklahoma Baptist scoreless and give her team a chance to win in the eight with the international tiebreaker format already in use.

As the home team, Fort Hays State had plenty of opportunities to take a lead or win throughout the regulation seven innings of play, but baserunning mistakes in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings hindered the Tigers from plating runs. In the fifth, the Tigers ran into the third out of the inning trying to take third base on an errant throw from the outfield. OBU recovered in time to make the tag at third. In the sixth with runners at second and first, the runners were not in position to tag on a deep fly ball to left center. A batter later, they tried to swipe third and second on a pitch in the dirt, but the catcher recovered quickly and gunned down the lead runner for FHSU at third. In the seventh, the leadoff hitter reached first and then after stealing second, strayed off the base and was tagged out.

The Tigers even had a great run-scoring opportunity in the fourth, but struggles with situational hitting persisted from game one. With one out and runners at first and third, OBU pitcher Katie Long got out of the jam with an infield pop up and a strikeout.

Nelson was able to work out of some trouble in the first. After getting the first two batters on grounders right back to her, she hit a batter, walked a batter, and hit another to load the bases. However, she got out of the pickle with a fly ball to right field. The only other two baserunners allowed throughout the rest of the game came on walks in the second and fourth innings. Nelson and the Tiger defense nailed the door shut the rest of the way.

Despite the offense struggling to find the winning run for Nelson, she remained poised in the international tiebreak format. OBU had a runner placed on second to start the eighth, but Nelson was able to catch a bunt popped up back to her. She turned and fired to second, nearly getting a double play right out of the gate. From there, she got a pop up to shortstop and then a strikeout looking on the outside corner to preserve her no-hitter through 24 outs.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5339">Katie Adler</a>&nbsp;started the Tiger half of the eighth on second as the last batter to make an out in the seventh. The Tigers were looking to sacrifice her over, but a passed ball allowed Adler to get to third. However,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5352">Hannah Gates</a>&nbsp;struck out looking as Adler stood at third with one out. Then&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5342">Terran Caldwell</a>, the hottest hitter for FHSU on the day, finally delivered the clutch hit FHSU had been looking for throughout the game. She drove a ball into the left-center gap, easily allowing Adler to score from third and give Nelson and the Tigers the 1-0 win. Caldwell finished the day 5-of-7 at the plate between the two games.

Nelson became the first-ever Tiger to hurl a no-hitter in extra innings during the program's NCAA Division II history, which began in 1999. It was the 13th&nbsp;no-hitter in Division II history for Fort Hays State, while she became the sixth individual in the program's Division II history to throw a complete-game no-hitter. FHSU now has 12 complete-game no hitters in its history and one combined no-hitter. Seven of the complete-game no hitters have been in games with a final score of 1-0.

Nelson's gem was the first no-hitter for FHSU since March 21, 2014, when Paxton Duran won a 1-0 battle against Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. In fact, the last three Tiger no-hitters have been thrown against schools from the state of Oklahoma, with the one prior to Duran's being Holub's seventh career no-hitter against Central Oklahoma during the 2013 MIAA Tournament. Nelson had the honor of throwing her first no-hitter as a Tiger in her home state, as she hails from Perry just up the road to the north a bit from the Edmond/Oklahoma City area.

Nelson finished the game with nine strikeouts. Following the walk in the fourth, she retired the last&nbsp;14 OBU batters she faced and struck out the side in the seventh. She moved to 3-1 on the season with the win.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Fort Hays State moved to 6-4 overall on the season with a split of its games on Sunday in Oklahoma City at Tom Heath Field, home of the Oklahoma Christian University softball team. The Tigers fell in their first contest of the day to Colorado Christian, 7-2, before posting a history-making win with a 1-0, 8-inning, win over Oklahoma Baptist. In the win over OBU,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5348">Michaelanne Nelson</a>&nbsp;became the first player in FHSU history to throw an extra-inning no-hitter and sixth player in program history to throw a complete-game no-hitter.Colorado Christian 7, Fort Hays State 2 The Tigers struggled with situational hitting in their first game for the second straight day, not able to push runs across in good run-scoring opportunities early.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5352">Hannah Gates</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5342">Terran Caldwell</a>&nbsp;opened the game with back-to-back singles, but there was no more movement after a fielder's choice, pop up, and foul pop up.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5350">Lily Sale</a>&nbsp;opened the third inning with a single and then took an extra base when the CCU defense left second base vacated. A sacrifice fly plated Colorado Christian's first run.The Cougars benefitted from a Tiger throwing error with two outs in the fourth, scoring two runs on a routine grounder that should have been the end of the inning. CCU led 3-0 after four innings. The Cougars tacked on two more in the fifth with an RBI triple and RBI single.Fort Hays State finally cashed in during the sixth inning after Caldwell singled and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5358">Kristen Reed</a>&nbsp;walked to open the frame. CCU made a pitching change with Reamer entering the circle. Haegele recorded her first strikeout as a Tiger to end the inning.Caldwell finished the game 3-of-4 at the plate, the only Tiger with a multi-hit game. Chapman took the loss, moving to 3-3 on the season. She lasted 5.1 innings with five strikeouts, while allowing five hits and four walks. However, seven innings was not enough to determine a winner, so Nelson had to toss an extra no-hit frame to keep Oklahoma Baptist scoreless and give her team a chance to win in the eight with the international tiebreaker format already in use.As the home team, Fort Hays State had plenty of opportunities to take a lead or win throughout the regulation seven innings of play, but baserunning mistakes in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings hindered the Tigers from plating runs. In the fifth, the Tigers ran into the third out of the inning trying to take third base on an errant throw from the outfield. OBU recovered in time to make the tag at third. In the sixth with runners at second and first, the runners were not in position to tag on a deep fly ball to left center. A batter later, they tried to swipe third and second on a pitch in the dirt, but the catcher recovered quickly and gunned down the lead runner for FHSU at third. In the seventh, the leadoff hitter reached first and then after stealing second, strayed off the base and was tagged out.The Tigers even had a great run-scoring opportunity in the fourth, but struggles with situational hitting persisted from game one. With one out and runners at first and third, OBU pitcher Katie Long got out of the jam with an infield pop up and a strikeout.Nelson was able to work out of some trouble in the first. After getting the first two batters on grounders right back to her, she hit a batter, walked a batter, and hit another to load the bases. However, she got out of the pickle with a fly ball to right field. The only other two baserunners allowed throughout the rest of the game came on walks in the second and fourth innings. Nelson and the Tiger defense nailed the door shut the rest of the way.Despite the offense struggling to find the winning run for Nelson, she remained poised in the international tiebreak format. OBU had a runner placed on second to start the eighth, but Nelson was able to catch a bunt popped up back to her. She turned and fired to second, nearly getting a double play right out of the gate. Nelson makes history with extra-inning no-hitter, Tiger softball earns split

The Fort Hays State baseball team rallied for another come-from-behind victory on Sunday, completing the series sweep of New Mexico Highlands with a 7-6 victory at home. After opening the year with four wins over MSU Denver, the Tigers have now swept multiple series for the first time since 2016.

After trailing by as many as six in Saturday's game three victory, the Tigers (9-3) fell behind 5-0 through two innings in Sunday's finale. New Mexico Highlands (0-4) quickly jumped in front with a three-run home run in the first before tacking on two more runs in the second.

Tiger starter&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5268">Ryan Ruder</a>&nbsp;settled in after the first time through the lineup, holding the Cowboys scoreless over his final three innings of work and allowing just four baserunners.

The Tigers took their time getting the bats going on offense, with just two hitters reaching base over the first three frames. They had a great chance to cut into the lead with the bases loaded and no one out in the fourth, but NMHU starter Kalen Hammer worked out of the jam with two strikeouts and a groundout to maintain the 5-0 lead.

After Ruder posted another zero in the top half of the fifth, Fort Hays State got to work in the home half.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5273">Drake Angeron</a>&nbsp;worked a walk and swiped his 12th bag of the season before coming in to score on a two-out double from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5289">Grant Schmidt</a>.

Hamilton made quick work of the Cowboys again in the eighth before Stephens provided what proved to be a very important insurance run. The senior catcher crushed a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left field, tallying his fifth home run of the season to give the Tigers a 7-5 advantage.

Hamilton got one out in the ninth before giving way to&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5287">Jacob Douglas</a>, who came on looking for his second save in as many days. The junior struck out the first batter he faced before the Cowboys made things interesting, rattling off consecutive singles to load the bases for Clayton Hale, the NMHU clean-up hitter. After allowing three home runs to Hale over the first three games of the series, the Tigers pitched him very carefully, ultimately walking him to drive in a run. Douglas bounced back with a six-pitch strikeout to secure the victory.

Ruder did not factor into the decision after allowing five runs and striking out five over five innings of work. Hamilton (1-0) did not give up a hit over his 3.1 innings on the bump, striking out three and allowing just the one run in the ninth. Douglas (2) earned the save after striking out two of the five batters he faced.

Stephens collected three of the seven hits for the Tigers, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Stephens and Maneth both scored two runs while Olson drove in a team-high two RBI.

The Tigers will continue non-conference play with another home four-game series next weekend when CSU-Pueblo comes to town. The set begins with a single game on Friday (Feb. 21) at 3 p.m.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Dexter Dennis had a career-high 21 points as Wichita State beat Tulane 82-57. 

Tyson Etienne added 20 points for the Shockers. Dennis hit 8 of 10 shots, including 4 of 6 on 3-pointers. Etienne shot 7 of 9, including 6 of 8 from the arc. 

The Shockers made 13 of 24 3-point tries for 54%, better than the 48% they shot overall and nearly matching the 55% they shot at the free-throw line (11 of 20). 

Christion Thompson led the Green Wave on Sunday with 16 points and seven rebounds.

EDMOND, Okla. – Fort Hays State Softball went 1-1 on Saturday in a pair of games at the Edmond Regional Softball Festival. The Tigers dropped their first game of the day, 3-2, to St. Edward's University before winning their second contest by the same score over Chadron State. The Tigers are now 5-3 overall on the season.

St. Edward's 3, Fort Hays State 2 Poor execution plagued the Tigers throughout the first game of the day, leading to a 3-0 advantage by St. Edward's. The Tigers put together a late rally in an attempt to extend the game with a 2-out, 2-RBI double by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5339">Katie Adler</a>&nbsp;in the bottom of the seventh, but it was too little, too late in a game full of Tiger miscues. St. Edward's escaped with the one-run victory.

Fort Hays State's struggles on offense through the first six innings stemmed from the inability to advance runners. FHSU had its first batter reach base in each of the first five innings, but squandered each chance. In the first, second, and third innings, the second batter of the inning struck out each time. The runner never advanced further than first each time. In the fourth, the Tigers ran into a double play when a sacrifice bunt turned into a double play as the runner tried to take an extra base. In the fifth, the Tigers opened with two straight singles, but a flyout made one out and another baserunning mistake made two outs. A strikeout ended any further threat.

Meanwhile, the Tigers struggled defensively throughout the game and were lucky to hold the Hilltoppers scoreless for four innings. In the fifth inning, a throwing error on a routine grounder to shortstop put two on with no outs. It blossomed into an unearned run for SEU, the first run of the game.

More sluggish defense turned into two more unearned runs for SEU in the sixth. A throwing error on a routine grounder to first base gave SEU an extra out and two outs later, a double brought home the second run of the game. SEU added another run two batters later with an RBI single.

Adler finally gave the Tigers the timely hit they needed in the seventh to plate a pair of runs, but unfortunately&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5358">Kristen Reed</a>, the top hitter for the Tigers entering the game, grounded out to end the game.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5348">Michaelanne Nelson</a>&nbsp;took a tough-luck loss without allowing an earned run. She scattered nine hits and walked one batter, while striking out five. McKenna Leamon picked up the win, though the two Tiger runs were her responsibility. Emily Klanika got the final three outs for SEU for her first save of the year.

Fort Hays State 3, Chadron State 2 The Tigers were able to shake off their sluggish performance in game one to hold on for a 3-2 win in the second contest of the day. The Tigers evened their record with Chadron State on the year after falling to the Eagles on the first weekend of play in Texas by a score of 4-1.

FHSU starting pitcher&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5344">Hailey Chapman</a>&nbsp;was able to dance around danger on the basepaths in three of the first six innings by stranding runners in scoring position. She nearly had a complete-game shutout until Chadron scored its only two runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single. She got a flyout down the right field line to finish her complete game effort, striking out 10 batters en route to her third win of the season. She allowed four hits and four walks.

FHSU struggled to find timely hits with runners on the bases in the second, third, and fourth innings, but finally broke through in the fifth with all three of its runs.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5339">Katie Adler</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5352">Hannah Gates</a>&nbsp;triggered the rally with back-to-back singles. The runner never advanced further than first each time. In the fourth, the Tigers ran into a double play when a sacrifice bunt turned into a double play as the runner tried to take an extra base. In the fifth, the Tigers opened with two straight singles, but a flyout made one out and another baserunning mistake made two outs. A strikeout ended any further threat.Meanwhile, the Tigers struggled defensively throughout the game and were lucky to hold the Hilltoppers scoreless for four innings. Tiger softball splits a pair of games in Oklahoma

HAYS – The TMP girls and boys basketball teams split a Saturday
doubleheader with Salina Heart in a pair of games that were postponed in January
because of winter weather.

In the girls game the Lady Monarchs led wire-to-wire and put
an end to their three-game losing streak with the TMP boys fell in a battle of
ranked teams.

The TMP Lady Monarchs got back-to-back three pointers by Megan
Hamel and Kyleigh Allen to open the game on a 6-0 run. Emilee Lane added five
straight to put TMP up 11-5. The Monarchs led build an eight point lead at
19-11 &nbsp;through the first quarter.

TMP led by as many as seven in the second quarter before
leading by six at halftime 29-23.

Early in the third quarter TMP led by as many as eight at
35-27. But with three minutes to play in the quarter Sacred Heart closed within
two at 36-34. 

TMP answered the Lady Knights run with a 15-2 run to end the
third and begin the fourth quarter and built a 51-36 lead. The Monarchs led by
as many of 20 in the fourth quarter on their way to a 67-45 win.

Kyleigh Allen scored a team-high 16 points for TMP.

The Monarchs improved to 6-11. Sacred Heart dropped to 12-5.

In a battle of ranked teams TMP (No. 7 3A) raced out to an
early 10-point lead only to see Sacred Heart (No. 2 2A) rally for a 54-48 win.

TMP’s Brady Kreutzer started the game with a three point
play to give TMP a 3-0 lead. After back-to-back three’s from Ryan Stoecklein and
Jackson Schulte TMP led 9-0. The Monarchs led by as much as 10 in the first quarter
before leading 12-7 after the first quarter.

The Monarchs were held scoreless for nearly seven minutes to
end the first quarter and begin the second quarter while Sacred Heart closed
within two at 15-13. TMP was able to build the lead back to eight in the second
quarter and led by six at halftime, 25-19.

In the third quarter TMP held a six-point lead at 31-25 but Sacred
Heart put together a 13-1 run to take a 38-31 lead. TMP was able to tie the
game against at 38. But a pair of free throws gave the Knights a lead with just
under five minutes to play. It was a lead Sacred Heart would give back as they
held off TMP for a 54-48 win.

Jackson Schulte led TMP with a game-high 21 points.

Caleb Gilliland scored 18 for Sacred Heart.

Sacred Heart improved to 15-2 with the win while TMP dropped
to 13-3.

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team improved its record to 8-3 after sweeping a double header against New Mexico Highlands on Saturday. The Tigers put up 17 runs over the two games after plating ten runs in Friday's series opener. The Tigers and Cowboys will wrap up the series with a single game at noon on Sunday at Larks Park.

Game One: Fort Hays State 4, New Mexico Highlands 2 The Tigers and Cowboys remained scoreless until the third inning when Fort Hays struck for all four of its runs. After&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5276">Griffin Brunson</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5273">Drake Angeron</a>&nbsp;started the inning with back-to-back walks,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5291">Garrett Stephens</a>&nbsp;delivered a double to left center to score the first run of the game.

Game Two: Fort Hays State 13, New Mexico Highlands 10 After combining for six runs in game one, game two saw a total of 23 runs cross home plate. The Cowboys came out of the gates hot in game two, taking their first lead of the weekend with five runs in the first inning. Highlands added three in the second inning and one more in the third to total nine runs through three innings.

Tiger baseball takes series with Cowboys after doubleheader sweep

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State built 11 point leads
in the first and second half Saturday against Lincoln but couldn’t hold on in a
74-71 overtime loss to end their five-game win streak. The Tigers (12-12, 5-10
MIAA) fall two games back of the Blue Tigers (10-14, 7-8 MIAA) and remain in
ninth-place tie with four games to play.

The Tigers used a 15-4 run to build their first 11 point
lead on a Gilbert Peters dunk &nbsp;with 7:38
to play in the first half. Peters scored all of 10 points in the first half and
pulled down seven rebounds.

After seeing their lead trimmed to seven at halftime, FHSU
quickly built it back to 11 less than four minutes into the second half but
Lincoln responded with a 26-11 run over the next 12 minutes to go up 59-55 with
a little over four minutes to play.

Fort Hays State used a 7-0 run capped by a Calvin Harrington
three to take a 62-59 lead with 2:25 to play. The Tigers missed a layup with
just under two to play and Lincoln countered with a fast-break dunk from Jonell
Burton. The Tigers turned the ball over on their next possession and Lincoln
hit one of two free throws to tie the game 62-62 with just over a minute
remaining. 

A turnover on their next possession led to a go-ahead basket
by the Blue Tigers with 28 seconds remaining but Aaron Nicholson hit a pair of
free throws with 16 seconds to play to tie the game up then Lincoln missed a
shot in the corner near the end of regulation.

The Blue Tigers scored the first four points of the overtime
only to see the Tigers answer with four of their own to tie it 68-68. The Tigers
forced a Lincoln miss with two minutes to play but a turnover led to a layup which
gave Lincoln the lead for good. The Tigers missed a shot on their next
possession then Lincoln made a pair of free throws to go up four with 1:26 to
play.

Calvin Harrington’s three closed the gap to 72-71, then
after a stop on the other end, the Tigers missed a layup with 30 seconds left.
Lincoln hit a pair of free throws and the Tigers missed a pair of shots before
the final horn.

Jared Vitztum scored a career-high 24 points and had 10
rebounds to lead the Tigers.

The Tigers shot 41-percent from the field and were 5-of-21
from three. Lincoln, who came into the game as the second worst overall and
worst 3-point shooting team in the MIAA, connected on 50-percent from the floor
and went 7-of-14 from beyond the arc.

free throws with 16 seconds to play to tie the game up then Lincoln missed a
shot in the corner near the end of regulation.The Blue Tigers scored the first four points of the overtime
only to see the Tigers answer with four of their own to tie it 68-68. The Tigers
forced a Lincoln miss with two minutes to play but a turnover led to a layup which
gave Lincoln the lead for good. The Tigers missed a shot on their next
possession then Lincoln made a pair of free throws to go up four with 1:26 to
play.Calvin Harrington’s three closed the gap to 72-71, then
after a stop on the other end, the Tigers missed a layup with 30 seconds left.

field goal attempts and shot only 28-percent in the first half and led 29-23 at
halftime. They quickly pushed the lead to 11 in the third quarter before Lincoln
(3-21, 0-15 MIAA) closed the gap to five with 1:59 left in the quarter.

FHSU scored the final nine points of the quarter to go up
14. It was part of a 27-5 run over seven and-a-half minutes which pushed their
lead to 26.

Whitney Randall led four Tigers in double-figures with a
career-high 21 points. Jaden Hobbs and Belle Barbiere both scored 14. Barbiere
added 10 rebounds and Hobbs had a career-best nine assists. Kacey Kennett added
11 points and moved past Tatyana Legette and Kris Ostoff into 10th on the FHSU
all-time scoring list.

Lincoln has won two straight at home, defeating Emporia State back on 
February 1 and then Nebraska-Kearney on February 13. Lincoln is 5-3 in 
MIAA home contests so far this season, but just 1-5 away from home in

points per game. Lincoln owns the lowest 3-point field goal and 
free-throw shooting percentages in the MIAA.
