Wild West Fest baseball tournament schedule

Manhattan (AP) — Legendary former Kansas State football coach Bill Snyder says he misses being on the field but has no interest in returning to the sidelines more than 18 months after wrapping up a Hall of Fame career.

Snyder&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/bf2c52a682ba4a07832d8b9a8fde05a8">stepped away</a>&nbsp;in 2018 after 27 seasons on the sidelines that included winning 215 games, reaching 19 bowls and claiming a pair of Big 12 titles. He said he’s now mostly at home spending time with his wife and family.

“I don’t wake up thinking, ‘Boy do I miss football,’” Snyder told&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas.com/sports/college/big-12/kansas-state/article243789582.html" target="_blank">The Wichita Eagle</a>&nbsp;during a recent video conference. “I don’t really think about it all that much.”

Snyder said that when he first retired in 2005, it took him about half a year to get accustomed to the new role. And though he returned from retirement three years later, it’s never bothered him since.

“I can’t say that I don’t miss being on the field, but it’s not something that I think about going back to,” Snyder said. “The time has come and passed and I enjoyed it.”

Snyder arrived at Kansas State in the fall of 1988, a nondescript offensive coordinator from Iowa who once coached high school swimming before learning under legendary Hawkeyes coach Hayden Fry. During his tenure in Manhattan, which began in the Big Eight, he weathered seismic shifts in college football. Along the way he overcame throat cancer, sent dozens of players to the NFL and gave countless more an opportunity to succeed on and off the field.

Snyder said he still talks to many of his former players and recently made the case for Michael Bishop and Darren Sproles to join him in the College Football Hall of Fame

Synder said he’s always loved mentoring young players and imparting wisdom. He offered insight to anyone struggling with the unprecedented times we’re living through.

“I would like to think that it would be virtually the same,” Snyder said. “With all the turmoil that goes on, one thing that stands at the top is the quality of character and the type of person that you are and the value system that you possess.”

Longtime Kansas State coach Snyder says he enjoys retirement

HAYS – The Hays Larks scored at least one run in each of the
first five innings Sunday on their way to an 8-1 win over the Colorado Springs
Outlaws at Larks Park.

The Outlaws took the lead in the top of the first when they
scored on an error but the Larks answered with two in their half of the first.

Corbin Truslow got the Larks on the board with an RBI ground
out and then Hays took the lead when they scored on a wild pitch in the next at
bat. 

Over the next three innings the Larks scored two more runs
on wild pitches and one more on an error to take a 5-1 lead in the fourth
inning. Truslow added a two-run single in the fourth to blow the game open, 7-1.
He finished with three RBI’s.

Paddy Walsh allowed just one unearned run in three hitless
innings in his first start of the season. But he did not factor into the decision.
Cole Zimmerman picked up the win with three shutout innings of relief. 

The Larks improve to 5-1. They are at the Colorado Pirates on
Tuesday.

Larks complete sweep of Outlaws

SALINA – After a thrilling 5-2
semifinal win over the Kansas Scrappers, the Hays Senior Eagles ran out of gas in the finals, losing 10-0 in four innings to Millard North at the Kansas
Grand Slam Wood Bat Tournament.

Millard North, who went 5-0 in the tournament and outscored their opponents 69-4, scored four runs in the second,
three in the third then three in the fourth for the run-rule victory at Dean Evans Stadium.

The Eagles (12-2) were held to a
pair of singles from Carson Jacobs and Josh Haynes.

Colby Dreiling pitched a scoreless
first but suffered the loss after allowing seven runs on nine hits over three
innings.

Millard North has now won two
straight and eight of the last 10 Kansas Grand Slam titles. The only runs
scored on them were by the Eagles during pool play on Friday.

Carson Jacobs pitched a gem and the
Eagles were stellar defensively in their semifinal win over the Scrappers at
James Matson Field. The TMP-Marian senior went the distance, allowing two runs
on four hits with 10 strikeouts and five walks. He also led the Eagles at the
plate collecting three hits.

Hays took a 5-0 lead into the
bottom of the seventh when Topeka scored on a one-out single and sacrifice fly but
Jacobs got a strikeout with a runner at second to end the game.

The Eagles grabbed the early lead
with a run in the top of the first on a Brock Lummus single. The game stayed
that way until the fourth when Brady Kreutzer drove in Dawson VonFeldt on a
groundout in the fourth.

The Eagles added three insurance
runs in the sixth. After VonFeldt opened the inning with a double, he scored
on Dalton Dale’s single to center. Dale later scored on a passed ball then
Carson Jacobs base hit to left scoring Garrett Wellbrock who reached on a walk.


The Eagles return to action Tuesday against another Nebraska team. Their doubleheader with McCook begins at 5 p.m. at Larks Park.

After going 0-3 in pool play, the
Junior Eagles lost 7-4 to the Salina Eagles in their consolation game Sunday.

Omaha Sportclips defeated the Salina
Hawks 19-3 in the title game.

Senior Eagles finish runner-up at Kansas Grand Slam

ELLIS - The TMP-Marian Monarchs rallied
for four runs in the top of the seventh inning for an 8-6 win over Ellis Sunday
night. 

The Monarchs (10-7) were out hit
11-10 and had to overcome four errors as they win their second straight game.

A walk, an error and a single by
Mark Rack led to the Monarchs first run in the seventh. Ethan Atherton drew a
bases loaded walk which gave TMP the lead. Noah Gibson singled to left scoring
Rack then Jace Wentling scored on a passed ball to make the score 8-5.

Ellis turned a single and two
errors into a run in the bottom of the inning but Mason Robbins got a strikeout
to end the game.

Robbins pitched the final three
innings and picked up the win. He allowed two unearned runs on four this with
seven strikeouts and no walks.

Tegan Cain homered and doubled and had
three of Ellis’ 11 hits. Cain and Carter Bollig both drove in two runs.

Monarchs rally late to edge Ellis

SALINA – Colby Dreiling scored from
first base after an errant throw to second on a potential double play ball with
one out in the bottom of the fifth to lift the Hays Senior Eagles to a 10-9 win
over the Hutchinson Colts to begin bracket play Saturday night at the Kansas Grand
Slam Tournament.

The game was called after five
innings due to time limit.

The wild finish capped a wild night
which saw the Eagles (11-1) fall behind 6-0 before their first at bat. The Colts scored the six runs on only two hits but took advantage of six first inning walks.

Hays cut the deficit in half when
Brock Lummus drove a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence for a three-run homer.
The Eagles threatened for more but Carson Jacobs was thrown out trying to score
from third on a double steal and later Garrett Wellbrock grounded into a
double-play to end the inning.

The Eagles would grab the lead in the
second. After back-to-back walks by Jack Fields and Brady Kreutzer to start the
innings, Colby Dreiling was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Carson Jacobs hit
a one-out single which scored two. Josh Haynes followed with a base hit over the
first base bag to score Dreiling. Remington Cox then lined out to center,
scoring Jacobs to put the Eagles up 8-7.

The Eagles tacked on another run on
a throwing error in the third to build the lead to 9-7

Hutch drew five more walks in the top of
the fourth and scored three runs and take the lead back at 9-8.

In the bottom of the inning, Remington Cox singled and eventually scored the tying run by stealing home.

Carson Jacobs worked around a hit
batter in the top of the fifth to keep the game tied. Jacobs pitched one inning of relief and got the win.

Carson Spray, who was called up
from the Junior Eagles team, entered in the first and pitched 1 2/3 scoreless
innings of relief with four strikeouts and one walk to keep the Eagles in the game
early.

Brady Kreutzer, Josh Haynes and
Jack Fields all had two hits with Brock Lummus driving in three runs and Carson
Jacobs two RBIs.

The Colts managed only three hits
off four Eagles pitchers but took advantage of 11 walks.

The Eagles take on the Topeka
Scrappers in Sunday’s semifinals at 3 p.m. at James Matson Field. The Scrappers
won their pool and are 3-0 in the tournament with shutout wins over Hutchinson
and Great Bend and a 10-2 victory over the Wichita Sluggers.

Senior Eagles advance to semifinals in Salina

HAYS – The Hays Larks sent eight men to the plate in three
innings Saturday and two pitchers combined on a four-hitter has they took down
the Colorado Springs Outlaws 11-1 at Larks Park.

After both teams were retired in order in the first inning
the Outlaws were able to load the bases against Larks starter Landon Schirer in
the top of the second inning. Schirer allowed a four-pitch walk to the number
nine hitter Hayden Ambuehl giving Colorado Springs the 1-0 lead. But that lead
was short lived.

In the bottom half of the inning the first four batters of
the inning reached by. Corbin Truslow collected one of his two singles on the
night to lead off the inning. Jake Wyeth walked and the Palmer Hutchison laid down
a perfect bunt to load the bases. 

Truslow scored Hays’ first run of the game when Outlaws starter
Devin Dodson threw the ball to the backstop. Sean Cooper drove in his first of
two runs on the night with a fielder’s choice grounder to first and then two
batters later, with the bases loaded again, Hutchison scored on Dodson’s second
wild pitch of the inning. Hays led 3-1 through two innings.

In the third inning, Wyatt Divis collected his first hit of
the summer, a solo homerun to right, to lead off the inning putting Hays up
4-1.

Truslow singled in the next at bat and with two outs in the
inning Cooper drove him in with a singe to right. Two batters later, with the
bases loaded again, Drew Buhr singled home Cooper putting Hays up 6-1.

In the bottom of the sixth the first five Larks to come to the
plate reached, three of them on walks and one on a hit-by-pitch. Truslow was
hit in the back on a breaking ball with the bases loaded to make it 7-1. Wyeth
walked with the bases loaded in the next at bat giving Hays an 8-1 lead. 

Hays got two more in the inning when reliever Micah Bregard threw
a pair of wild pitches and through six innings Hays led 10-1.

In the seventh Buhr walked and three batters later Divis
drove him in with a single to center to secure the Larks 11-1 run-rule win in
seven innings.

Schirer allowed just one run on three hits and struck out four
in for innings for Hays.

Ryan Ruder earned the win. He allowed one hit and struck out
three in three innings of relief.

The Larks improve to 4-1 and will look for the sweep of the
Outlaws Sunday at Larks Park.

Larks take down Outlaws in series opener

HAYS – The Hays Larks made a couple of costly errors and the
Denver Cougars took advantage of those mistakes as they handed the Larks their
first loss of the season Friday at Larks Part.

Denver 4, Hays Larks 2 The Denver Cougars took and early 1-0 lead in the first
inning as Hays starter Zach Firmature struggled to find his rhythm in his first
career appearance for the Larks.

On the second pitch of the game Firmature hit the leadoff
batter Ricardo Preciado. After a sacrifice bunt and a single Preciado came in
to score on an RBI groundout by Steve Priest that put Denver up 1-0. Firmature
was able to strand a runner at third to end the inning.

After the Larks were retired in order in the bottom of the
first Denver threatened again in the second by Firmature was able to get a pair
of strikeouts to end the inning with the bases loaded.

It took the Larks offense until the third inning before they
were able to get on the board against Denver starter Dylan Munroe.

Palmer Hutchison put together a 10-pitch at-bat that ended
with a leadoff double in the bottom of the third. Two batters later Sean Cooper
delivered an RBI single to left scoring Hutchison to tie the game at 1.

After two straight scoreless inning the Cougars got the
leadoff hitter on in the sixth inning and then an error on a potential
double-play ball allowed the Cougars to get the first the first two runners of
the inning aboard. Three batters later the Cougars plated a run on an error by
shortstop Matt Cavanaugh that put Denver up 2-1.

The Cougars added two more runs in the seventh inning to
build a 4-1 lead through seven innings.

The Larks got a run back in the bottom of the eight inning
on a Jake Wyeth double but the Larks couldn’t get any closer in a 4-2 loss.

Dylan Munroe earned the win for Denver. He allowed just one
run on five hits in five innings. Aston Wetzler allowed one run in four innings
and earned the save.

Drew Buhr got the loss in relief for Hays. He allowed one
unearned run in three innings with three strikeouts.

Sean Cooper was two-for-three with and RBI for Hays and
Corin Truslow collected three hits.

HAYS – The Hays Larks made a couple of costly errors and the
Denver Cougars took advantage of those mistakes as they handed the Larks their

to score on an RBI groundout by Steve Priest that put Denver up 1-0. Firmature
was able to strand a runner at third to end the inning.After the Larks were retired in order in the bottom of the
first Denver threatened again in the second by Firmature was able to get a pair
of strikeouts to end the inning with the bases loaded.It took the Larks offense until the third inning before they
were able to get on the board against Denver starter Dylan Munroe.Palmer Hutchison put together a 10-pitch at-bat that ended
with a leadoff double in the bottom of the third. Two batters later Sean Cooper
delivered an RBI single to left scoring Hutchison to tie the game at 1.After two straight scoreless inning the Cougars got the
leadoff hitter on in the sixth inning and then an error on a potential
double-play ball allowed the Cougars to get the first the first two runners of
the inning aboard. Three batters later the Cougars plated a run on an error by
shortstop Matt Cavanaugh that put Denver up 2-1.The Cougars added two more runs in the seventh inning to
build a 4-1 lead through seven innings.The Larks got a run back in the bottom of the eight inning
on a Jake Wyeth double but the Larks couldn’t get any closer in a 4-2 loss.Dylan Munroe earned the win for Denver. He allowed just one
run on five hits in five innings. Aston Wetzler allowed one run in four innings
and earned the save.Drew Buhr got the loss in relief for Hays. He allowed one
unearned run in three innings with three strikeouts.Sean Cooper was two-for-three with and RBI for Hays and
Corin Truslow collected three hits.Hays drops to 3-1.They will host the Colorado Springs Outlaws for the first of

SALINA – After a tough loss to the defending champions to
start the day, the Hays Senior Eagles bounced back with a thrilling win over
the host team to finish pool play 2-1 at the Kansas Grand Slam Wood Bat
Tournament in Salina Friday.

The Eagles (10-1) will begin bracket play against a yet to
be determined opponent at 9 p.m. Saturday night at Dean Evans Stadium.

Millard North 14,
Eagles 4 (4 innings) 
Millard North, who’s won seven of the last nine Grand Slam championships,
scored five runs in the first inning, four in second and three in the third for
a 12-3 lead.

Dalton Dale collected two of the Eagles five hits while
Brady Kreutzer drove in two runs.

Colby Dreiling gave up all five first innings runs on three
hits and took the loss.

Eagles 14, Salina
Falcons 12 (8 innings) 
For a second straight day, the Eagles pulled out a slugfest win at James
Matson Field. After holding off the Topeka Scrappers 13-11 to open pool play Thursday, they needed extra innings to get by the Falcons Friday afternoon.

The Eagles struck first with three runs in the top of the
second. Dalton Dale’s one-out single following two straight walks, scored
Carson Jacobs. Jack Fields followed with a walk which scored Dawson VonFeldt.
Brady Kreutzer’s fielder’s choice to the pitcher scored Garrett Wellbrock.

Salina answered with five unearned
runs in the bottom of the inning off of starter Garrett Wellbrock who walked
four in the frame.

The Falcons tacked on two more
unearned runs in the third before the Eagles exploded with a six-run fourth to
take a 9-7 lead. Colby Dreiling’s two-run double to left closed the gap to 7-5.
Carson Jacobs hit a two-out single to left to tie the game 7-7. Following a
Josh Haynes walk, Dawson VonFeldt doubled to left which scored two.

The Falcons tacked on single runs in
the fifth and sixth to tie the game 9-9.

Brady Kreutzer’s single to left
scored Remington Cox in the top of the seventh but the Falcons answered with a
two-out double to tie the game in the bottom of the innings.

With each team getting a runner at
second base in extra innings, the Eagles tallied four runs with two outs in the
eighth.

After loading the bases with a
single and hit batter, Brock Lummus and Josh Haynes scored on a throwing error
by the shortstop on a grounder from Dalton Dale. Following a Jack Fields walk,
Brady Kreutzer singled to left scoring Cox and Dale which gave Hays a 14-10
lead.

Salina made things interesting in the
bottom the inning, scoring twice and had runners at second and third when
reliever Brady Kreutzer got a flyout to left to end the game.

Kreutzer allowed two runs on four
hits with two strikeouts and two walks over two innings of relief for the win. 

Starter Garrett Wellbrock went five
innings allowing eight runs, all unearned, on five hits with six walks and four
strikeouts.

Kreutzer, Carson Jacobs and Jack
Fields all had three of the Eagles 12 hits with Kreutzer driving in four,
Jacobs two and Dawson VonFeldt two.

The Junior Eagles fell 17-3 to the Salina Hawks to go 0-3 in pool play. They
play a consolation game at 4:45 p.m. Saturday at Dean Evans Stadium.

to locate. Carson Jacobs then doubled to left scoring Lummus. Jacobs touched

a base hit to left.

The Senators opened the seventh with a single and RBI
double, then added another run on a two-out fielding error by Wellbrock, but
Brady Kreutzer got a strikeout to end the game and picked up the win The

strikeouts and a walk over two innings of relief. 

Both teams took advantage of a strong southerly wind blowing
out to left, combining for 30 hits, three of them home runs. 13 of the game’s 24
runs came in the first two innings. 

After retiring the first two batters of the game, Eagles
starter Dawson VonFeldt ran into trouble and gave up three runs.

The Eagles responded with four runs in the bottom of the first
on RBI singles from Brock Lummus, Josh Haynes and Dawson VonFeldt.

The Senators retook the lead at 5-4 with a two-run homer in
the second but the Eagles came back with a four-spot in the bottom of the

The Association also said that its annual Awards Celebration will be postponed to Summer 2021.&nbsp;&nbsp; This year’s virtual MIAA Football Media Day is set for Monday, July 27 with virtual Basketball Media Day planned for Tuesday, October 13. Fans will be encouraged to participate in both events through social media by asking a question for their favorite team, coaches, and student-athletes. More details will be available on the format and schedule of the 2020 Football Media Day at a later date. HAYS - The Hays Senior Eagles raced out to an
8-0 lead after the first two innings and cruised to a 10-2 five inning run-rule
win over the Smith Center Blue Raiders Wednesday night at Hays High School.

All of the Eagles players were wearing their high school uniforms for the game after all had their prep season's canceled this spring due to the coronavirus outbreak.

TMP-Marian seniors Brady
Kreutzer and Carson Jacobs both had two hits. Jacobs drove in two runs and
scored twice.

The
Eagles (10-0) scored three runs in the first inning then took control with five
runs in the second. Brock Lummus drove in the first two runs with a single to
left. Carson Jacobs followed with a two-run single. Lummus capped off the big
inning by stealing home.

Jack
Fields (1-0) allowed one run on one hit over three innings and picked up the
win in his first start of the season. Fields had four strikeouts and walked
two. Carson Jacobs pitched the final two innings and struck out four and walked
two. 

The
Eagles are back in action Thursday afternoon at the Kansas Grand Slam Wood Bat Tournament
in Salina. They open pool play against the Kansas Senators at 2:30 p.m. at James
Matson Field.

The Junior Eagles are in the 16U division of the same tournament. They open Thursday at 10 a.m. against the Topeka Scrappers then play Omaha Sportsclips at 4:45 p.m.

runs in the second. Brock Lummus drove in the first two runs with a single to

win in his first start of the season. Fields had four strikeouts and walked
two. Carson Jacobs pitched the final two innings and struck out four and walked

Eagles are back in action Thursday afternoon at the Kansas Grand Slam Wood Bat Tournament
in Salina. They open pool play against the Kansas Senators at 2:30 p.m. at James
Matson Field.The Junior Eagles are in the 16U division of the same tournament. They open Thursday at 10 a.m. against the Topeka Scrappers then play Omaha Sportsclips at 4:45 p.m.

Both MWSU and the Chiefs were very excited about the potential of our 11th training camp in St. Joseph this summer, but with health and safety a top priority surrounding the many facets of hosting an NFL Training Camp, the university understands and appreciate the need for caution.

Fans in St. Joseph look forward to rooting on the defending Super Bowl champs throughout this coming season and welcoming them back to the MWSU campus in July 2021 and beyond.

Chiefs won't hold training camp at Missouri Western this summer

GREAT BEND - The TMP-Marian Monarchs 18U baseball team split their doubleheader at the Great Bend triangular Tuesday at the Great Bend Sports Complex. The Monarchs rallied to beat the Pratt 86ers 10-7 before falling 1o-5 to the host Great Bend Chiefs.

The Monarchs are now 8-6 on the season. They host Larned in a doubleheader Thursday at the TMP Field.

Monarchs 10, Pratt 7 Jace Wentling went 3-for-4 with two triples and five RBIs. His first inning triple drove in a run to give TMP the early lead. Wentling later hit a bases-loaded triple which gave the Monarchs the lead in the top of the fifth.

Wentling picked up the win on the mound. He went four innings and gave up five runs (three earned) on five hits with seven strikeouts and five walks.

Great Bend 10, Hays 5 The Monarchs scored five runs in the top of the first inning and led 5-4 until Great Bend scored six in the fourth.

The Chiefs (5-5) took advantage of an error, two walks and a hit batter to start what turned out to be the decisive fourth inning.

TMP walked five and committed two errors in the big frame.

Jace Wentling drove in two of the Monarchs five runs in the first and finished with two hits.

Nick Herman allowed six runs (one earned) on one hit over 1 2/3 innings of relief and suffered the loss.

Monarchs split two games in Great Bend

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The&nbsp;Kansas City Royals&nbsp;brought their entire six-man draft class to town this week, signing them to their first professional contracts and giving them a chance to see spacious Kauffman Stadium and learn about the organization.

Worry not: In the age of&nbsp;coronavirus, the prospects and their families maintained plenty of social distancing.

The headliner of the crop is Asa Lacy, their first-round pick out of Texas A&amp;M, whom scouting director Lonnie Goldberg believes has the talent to pitch at the front of the rotation. The big, rangy left-hander was widely considered the best arm in the draft earlier this month, yet he slid to the Royals at the fourth overall pick.

The Royals continued the draft by taking Baylor shortstop Nick Loftin in the competitive-balance round; high school right-hander Ben Hernandez in the second; Alabama outfielder Tyler Gentry in the third; Oregon State left-hander Christian Chamberlain in the fourth; and Eastern Illinois right-hander Will Klein in the fifth and final round.

"We're very proud of the players we selected. We're proud of their families and we're proud of the scouting departments and the great work that many people in our staff are doing," Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. "So we wanted to share knowledge, we wanted to share vision, but most importantly we wanted to begin that relationship, and doing what we can to break down barriers and build trust through transparency and learning and growth."

Typically the Royals have a news conference when their first-round pick signs his contract, and then showcase him to fans during a home game. But all that pizzazz was put on hold while the country continues to deal with the coronavirus, which has kept big leaguers sidelined and is likely to prevent minor league baseball from happening at all.

That didn't stop Lacy from marveling at a ballpark that has played host to two World Series in the past six years.

"Just to have all of us here, all the picks, and have us together and have some sense of normalcy, and to kind of learn and realize what we're about to embark on has been special," he said, "and this is only the beginning."

Goldberg said the plan for the rookie class is to join the rest of the Royals' prospects in a series of video meetings, and the hope is that they eventually will be given a green light to begin workouts at their facility in Surprise, Arizona.

The pandemic caused Major League Baseball to shorten its draft to just five rounds, creating a massive pool of undrafted prospects that teams could sign for a maximum of $20,000. The Royals attacked the market the minute the draft ended and came away with seven other players whom many scouts ranked among the top 25 who were still available.

They were Washington State left-hander A.J. Block; Georgia outfielder Tucker Bradley; Arkansas-Little Rock catcher Kale Emshoff; LSU catcher Saul Garza; Texas Tech right-hander John McMillon; Michigan infielder Matt Schmidt; and Tennessee right-hander Chase Wallace.

"They all really want to play baseball," Moore said, "and like I've told Asa and some of the other players that have earned those slots in the draft where they've been awarded pretty good financial packages -- they've earned that. They've earned that through their hard work and commitment and perfecting their skills.

"The other players, because of only five rounds, were kind of left out of that mix a little bit, so it speaks volumes that they just want to play baseball. The money doesn't make the player and these guys all understand that.
