After capturing national attention earlier in the week with a 13-point exhibition win at Kansas State University, the Fort Hays State Men's Basketball team returns to action on Saturday (Dec. 12) at Newman University. Tipoff is set for 3:30 pm at Fugate Gymnasium in Wichita. The Tigers are looking to notch their first regular season win of the season. Newman is not allowing any of the general public to attend home games right now, so the only way to watch the Tigers on Saturday will be on&nbsp;<a href="https://themiaanetwork.com/fhsutigers/">The MIAA Network</a>. A season subscription is $100, which gives you all games in the MIAA for the entire season, or a day pass (24-hour access) is $10. The Tigers will still be without head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=952">Mark Johnson</a>&nbsp;on Saturday after a positive COVID test leading up to the contest at Kansas State, but associate head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=953">Jeremy Brown</a>&nbsp;is cleared to return after being in quarantine as a contact trace. Brown will serve as head coach on Saturday after assistant coach&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/coaches.aspx?rc=955">Todd Johnston</a>&nbsp;served as head coach on Tuesday when Fort Hays State knocked off Kansas State in Manhattan. Fort Hays State looks to use the big exhibition win at Kansas State on Tuesday to jump start success in the regular season after three close losses to start the year. The Tigers dropped their first three contests by a combined eight points, which included a buzzer-beating shot by Washburn in the season opener. The Tigers lost by two to Washburn, two to Emporia State, and four to Nebraska-Kearney. Fort Hays State swept the regular season series with Newman last year, scoring a seven-point win in Hays and a 10-point win in Wichita. FHSU scored 79 points in each of those wins.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5867">Nyjee Wright</a>, who is still unavailable due to a preseason injury, led the Tigers with 26 points in the win over the Jets in Hays last season on February 6. HILL CITY - The the TMP-Marian girls and boys basketball team opened up Mid-Continent League play Friday night with a win over Hill City.

The TMP Lady Monarchs held Hill City to just two points in the second quarter and put together an 18-4 run to end the first quarter and open the second on their way to a 51-32 win

Hill City jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but the Monarchs scored nine straight on a Sophia Balthazor three pointer, a pair of fast break baskets and a rebound and put back as the Monarchs took a 9-3 lead.

Hill City scored eight straight to take the 11-9 lead before TMP tied the game at 11 on a Jaci VonLintel field goal at the end of the first quarter.

TMP took the lead on a Balthazor steal and layup that put TMP up 13-11. They would neve trail again.

In that second quarter the Monarchs outscored Hill City 10-2 and then opened the third quarter with five quick Emilee Lane points to put TMP up 11 at 26-15.

A Kyleigh Allen three-pointer gave TMP a 29-18 lead, capping off an 18-4 run.

The Monarchs led 36-24 through three quarters of action.

Balthazor hit her second three of the game to open the fourth quarter and four straight from Kassidi Yost gave TMP their largest lead of the night at 42-24.

Balthazor finished with a game-high 15 points. VonLintel finished with 10 points.

Alissa Keith led Hill City withy 11 points and 8 rebounds.

TMP improved to 3-1 while Hill City dropped to 0-2.

The TMP boys used a 21-4 first half run on their way to a 63-39 win over Hill City.

The two teams traded the lead early and Hill City was able to take an 8-7 first quarter lead.

Trailing by one, TMP's Jackson Schulte knocked in his second first-quarter three pointer sparking a 21-4 TMP run to end the first and begin the second putting TMP up 24-12.

The Monarchs outscored Hill City in the third quarter 20-4 building a 52-23 lead.

TMP led by as many as 30 points in the fourth quarter and claimed the 63-39 win.

Schulted scored in double-figures for the third time in four games to open the season with a game-high 16 points.

Sophomore Dylan Werth added 15 points and 8 rebounds.

Hill City's Derek Keith scored a team-high 12.

TMP improved to 3-1 on the season while Hill City dropped to 0-2.

Player of the Year, Major League Baseball announced this evening. The Comeback
Player of the Year Awards are officially sanctioned by MLB and have been
presented annually since 2005 to one player in each league who has re-emerged
on the field during the season. The 30 Club beat reporters from MLB.com
selected the winners from an original list of 30 candidates (one per MLB Club).

Perez,
who missed the entire 2019 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, returned
to the field in 2020 and hit a career-best .333 with 11 homers and 32 RBI over
37 games played. The 30-year-old added 12 doubles, 22 runs scored, 17 walks and
one stolen base, while recording a .353 on-base percentage and a career-high
.633 slugging percentage, which was the second-highest in franchise history
behind only Hall of Famer George Brett, who amassed a .664 mark during his AL MVP
Award-winning season in 1980. The 11 home runs hit by Perez led the Club and
were tied for third-most by a player who played 37 games-or-fewer, trailing
only Hall of Famers Frank Thomas (12 in 34 games) in 2005 and Ted Williams (13
in 37 games) in 1953. Additionally, the Valencia, Venezuela native paced the
Royals with eight go-ahead RBI and finished second on the team in RBI and
extra-base hits (23). 

The
six-time All-Star, who was named an All-MLB First Team selection last night,
recorded multiple hits, including an extra-base hit, in six consecutive games
from Sept. 11-18. He became the second player in Royals history to accomplish

The new video installation will be completed by Daktronics.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The renovation began this week with crews removing the previous boards.&nbsp; CrownVision’s video board will be upgraded to High Dynamic Range (HDR) which will be the fourth largest HDR videoboard in baseball, and the tallest HDR board in baseball or football.&nbsp; Pixels will increase by 138% allowing the human eye to see over a billion colors, thus allowing more contrast and a clearer picture.&nbsp; The board will be 105 feet by 85 feet.&nbsp; The process will take approximately a total of six weeks to complete.&nbsp; The previous HD board debuted before the 2008 season.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Royals Hall of Fame board will be five times taller than the ribbon board that is currently in place, making it 20.5 feet by 108 feet, offering 2,200 square feet of screen and displaying over 900,000 pixels.&nbsp; Structural work will be done to change the field-facing surface of the Hall of Fame prior to the installation of the new board.&nbsp; The buildout and installation will take approximately one month to complete.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The outfield wall boards will be upgraded in resolution to a brighter, sharper image.&nbsp; The display will bring 700,000 pixels to those walls.

Wichita’s minor league baseball team is set to become part of the Minnesota Twins’ organization.

The Wind Surge said Wednesday it has been invited to be Minnesota’s Double-A affiliate.

The
 move comes as part of a huge shakeup of the minor leagues by Major 
League Baseball, which now oversees all aspects of professional 
baseball. The changes include the reduction of minor league teams from 
160 to 120.

As part of the shakeup, most major league teams took 
the opportunity to reduce their geographic footprint. The Twins swapped 
minor league teams in upstate New York and Florida for teams in St. 
Paul, Minnesota, and Wichita.

"This is a very positive and great 
day for us," said Jared Forma, the Wind Surge’s senior vice president 
and general manager. "We're very excited because the Twins are truly a 
first-class organization."

He said there are several more steps 
to take before the agreement with the Twins becomes final. That includes
 signing a Player Development license with the Twins, which is a formal 
contract between the two organizations.

Forma said he understands
 that the agreement will be for 10 years, which will lend stability to 
Wichita. And the Twins, according to MLB.com, have one of the top minor 
league systems in baseball in terms of talent.

"They have an 
unbelievable minor league system," Forma said. "They like that homegrown
 player. So draft them and develop 'em .. versus a ton of free agent 
signings.

"Anyone I have talked to that knows someone from the 
Twins, there's not a person who has anything negative to say about the 
Twins."

The likely move also means the Wind Surge will drop from 
Triple-A – the highest level of the minor leagues – to Double-A. Forma, 
who has spent more than 20 years in baseball, said the difference is 
minimal

"If you put a Triple-A team on one side of a diamond and a
 Double-A team on the other, and you asked me to tell you the 
difference, I'm not sure I'd be able to," Forma said.

"Certainly,
 Triple-A offers a great product. I believe we're actually going to see 
the very top prospects in the Twins' organization and our opponents' for
 a longer period of time at Double-A than you would at Triple-A."

The
 Wichita Pilots and Wranglers, who played from 1987 through 2007 at 
Lawrence-Dumont Stadium, were a Double-A franchise. The Wichita Aeros 
were a Triple-A franchise from 1970 until 1984.

What league the 
Wind Surge will play in also is uncertain, although Forma said it likely
 will include teams that played in the Texas League. One of those teams 
is the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, which is the Kansas City Royals’ 
Double-A affiliate.

The Wind Surge arrived in Wichita from New Orleans in 2019 as the 
Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins. The city built the franchise a 
$75 million stadium on the west bank of the Arkansas River. It also sold
 land along the riverfront to team owners for $1 an acre for future 
development.

But the team never played in Riverfront Stadium 
after the 2020 season was canceled by the pandemic. In July, owner and 
managing partner Lou Schwechheimer died from complications from 
COVID-19.

He was instrumental in moving the team to Wichita. When
 he arrived, he was an active presence in the community, overseeing 
construction of the new stadium.

"When I first met Lou, he talked
 about this place with such a passion that I couldn’t get away from 
him," Wichita Mayor Brandon Whipple said Wednesday during a news 
conference at Riverfront Stadium to discuss the invitation from the 
Twins. "We had a one-hour meeting that lasted over three hours. "Lou 
talked about baseball here in Wichita not as a sport, not as an economic
 driver but as a place that brings communities together."

City 
officials hope the team and stadium will boost economic development and 
tourism in Wichita. Forma said he is just looking forward to playing 
baseball.

"We're just so excited because I do really believe this
 is step one of being able to look to 2021 and get back to some 
normalcy, which I think everyone is looking forward to," he said.

"But
 at the end of the day, we're going to have Wichita across our chests on
 our jerseys, and this great community is going to see some phenomenal 
baseball."

for induction into the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of
Fame Class of 2021. Awards will be presented during 2021 in conjunction with a
KSHSAA-sponsored state function/ championship, or locally at the inductee's
request. The time and location of each induction ceremony will be announced at

The Class of 2021 Hall of Fame inductees include:

SHANE CORDELL, LITTLE RIVER – FACULTY

Coach Shane Cordell’s record as a high school football and
girls basketball coach at his alma mater speaks for itself. In 29 years as the
high school football coach he compiled a record of 204-94 (.685) and played in
the state championship game seven times, bringing home three titles (1981-1A,
1996 and 1999 – 8-Man 1A DI). He was the first Kansas coach to play for and
then coach a state championship at his alma mater. His 34 years with the girls
basketball program posted a record of 604-225 (.729). The Redskins captured
four straight Class 1A state titles (1995-1998). Along the way they had three
undefeated seasons and a 91-game winning streak. The basketball court at Little
River HS is named after Cordell. As a coach and educator he has had a lasting
impact on students and the community of Little River.

GARY MUSSELMAN, SILVER LAKE – ADMINISTRATOR

Gary Musselman served Kansas students and the membership of
the Kansas State High School Activities Association for 30 years – eight years
as an Assistant Director and 22 years as the Executive Director (the longest in
Association history). During his tenure some of the initiatives
implemented&nbsp; include – Student Advisory Team; Officials Recognition
Program; Sports Medicine Advisory Committee; League Commissioners Summit;
Officials Advisory Committee; Game Day Spirit Showcase Competition; Spirit of
Sports and Heart of the Arts; Interscholastic Bowling. Musselman served on the
NFHS Board of Directors and was president of the NFHS in 2016-2017. Prior to
his work at the KSHSAA Musselman was a teacher and coach at Independence HS,
Andover HS, Beloit HS, Halstead HS and principal (1987- 1988) at La Crosse HS.

Van Rose is one of the most iconic, yet humble coaches to
impact generations of athletes in the state of Kansas. His name is synonymous
with Shawnee Mission Northwest HS Cross Country and Success. Coach Rose began
his 48-year coaching stint at Northwest HS when it opened in 1969 and his
athletes have dominated Class 6A. The girls team won 13 state championships; in
the 90s they won six of ten titles and overall placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd 21 times.
The boys team captured 21 6A titles, more than any school in Kansas and 12th
overall in the U.S. From 1994-2007, they earned 14 state titles in a row, the
5th longest streak in the country, and placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd 30 times in
school history. Add to this 25 boys and 14 girls Sunflower League titles. He
has received numerous cross country Coach of the Year honors.

JACQUE (STRUCKHOFF) STEDMAN – STUDENT (GRINNELL HS,
1980-1983)

In the early 1980s the Grinnell Lady Warriors captured
several state titles with Jacque Struckhoff playing a key role: volleyball - 1A
state champions in 1982 and 1983, placing 3rd in 1981; basketball – 1A state
runner-up in 1982 and 3rd place in 1983; track &amp; field – 1A state champions
in 1980, 1982, 1983 and runner-up in 1981. During her senior year she was named
to the All-Tournament team at state basketball, averaging 11 points and 12
rebounds per game, and she won three gold medals on the track (800m, 1600m and
3200m relays). Jacque was a remarkable example of not only a student-athlete
but also an all-around student, participating in band, pep club, Student
Council, Scholars Bowl, Math &amp; Science Relays and graduating with a 4.0
GPA. She participated on KSU track and cross country teams and in 1988 ran in
the 10,000m run at the Olympic Trials.

KIM TENNAL, URBANDALE, IA – FACULTY

To say that Centralia HS and Coach Kim Tennal dominated
Class 1A volleyball is putting it mildly. During 19 years at Centralia HS,
Tennal and her Lady Panther volleyball team posted a record of 582-47 (.926),
and made 17 state tournament appearances, winning nine Class 1A state titles
with a state record of eight in a row (1997-2004). During this span the team
posted an amazing record of 311-11 (.966). They had three undefeated seasons
(1997, 1999, 2000) and posted a winning streak of 126 matches. Prior to and
after her time at Centralia, she coached at three different high schools and
took all to the state tournament. Her overall high school volleyball record is
788-145 (.845). Coach Kim Tennal attacked each day with such conviction and
enthusiasm that as an individual, a school and a community you couldn’t help
but be impacted by her positive spirit.

The Hall of Fame is housed in the Kansas State High School
Activities Association offices, 601 SW Commerce Place in Topeka and is open

Five selected for KSHSAA Hall of Fame

Ellis USD 388 and Hays USD 489 will follow the&nbsp;Kansas High School Activities Association ruling Tuesday regarding spectators.

The districts will allow up to two parents or guardians per participant family to attend winter sports events and other activities.

KSHSAA had originally ruled winter activities would proceed without fans, but that decision was appealed.&nbsp;

KSHSAA's latest ruling on spectators will be in effect from&nbsp;Dec. 10 through Jan. 28.

Ellis High School has a wrestling tournament Friday, and the new rules will be in effect for that event for both visitors and the home team, said Donna Schmidt, Ellis High School principal.

Participants will provide the school with the names of the family members attending in lieu of tickets for the tournament Friday.

Ellis, Hays to allow 2 parents/guardians at sports events

MANHATTAN, Kan. - It doesn't count in the record books but it's a game Fort Hays State fans won't soon forget. Playing without their two veteran coaches and several injured players, the Tigers upset Kansas State 81-68 Tuesday night at Bramlage Coliseum.

Jared Vitztum scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Tigers to their first win over the Wildcats since 1938.

Caleb Hammeke added 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals for the Tigers, who played the game as an exhibition and without coach Mark Johnson, who tested positive for COVID-19, and associate head coach Jeremy Brown, who is in quarantine as a close contact.

Behind second-year assistant Todd Johnston, Fort Hays State never trailed and led by 21, 71-50, after Hemmeke hit a 3-pointer with 7:07 to play.

"I'm just excited for the guys," Johnston said after the game. "I'm happy for them. We are 0-3, but we are talented. We are young and inexperienced. Some of the experienced guys from last year are in a completely different role this year. We just haven't figured out how to win a game (in regular season). I'm extremely excited for them. I hope this carries over and helps us win games in the future. I think for confidence and mentally for these guys, to see that, and pull it off is huge."

The game came on the 83rd anniversary of the first-ever meeting between the Tigers and Wildcats. Fort Hays State won that 1936 game 47-25 and the Tigers won again in 1938. The next three regular-season games were won by Kansas State in 1946, 1947 and 2009.

The Tigers never trailed in the game. An 8-0 run in the first half pushed the lead to eight and they led by six at halftime.

Fort Hays’ lead went from seven to 13 points in the second half until a 9-0 run at the midpoint made it 68-49 with 9:03 to go.

Mike McGuirl led Kansas State (1-4) with 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including four 3-pointers, but his teammates went 0-15 behind the arc. The Wildcats were also outrebounded 34-26 and outscored in the paint 36-30.

🏀 Shorthanded Tigers upset Kansas State

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Jalen Wilson remained composed when he needed to hit the go-ahead 3-pointer for Kansas in the closing seconds.

He was equally stoic watching No. 8 Creighton try to match him.

The redshirt freshman calmly hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 42 seconds left Tuesday night, only to foul the Bluejays’ Marcus Zegarowski attempting a tying 3 at the other end. But as Wilson watched, the preseason Big East player of the year missed the last of three foul shots, allowing the fifth-ranked Jayhawks to escape with a 73-72 win.

“I just had a lot of confidence in myself. My team has a lot of confidence in me,” said Wilson, who missed most of last season with an injury. “We told each other, ‘We’re going to win this game. We’re going to win this game.’”

Wilson finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds, his role of hero solidified thanks to Zegarowski’s miss. Christian Braun added 14 points, missing a foul shot that could have clinched the game with 12.5 seconds to go, while David McCormack contributed 13 points as the Jayhawks (5-1) won their fifth straight against the Bluejays.

“To have their best player miss one late, yeah, we were fortunate. Very fortunate,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “But the game should have never been in that situation, even though it was a great game and either team could have won. We had a chance to put ourselves in a position where that wouldn’t happen and we screwed it up.”

Denzel Mahoney gave Creighton (3-1) a chance down the stretch. He hit a 3-pointer with 1:22 left to get the Bluejays within 70-68, then picked the pocket of Bryce Thompson and coasted for the tying layup with just over a minute to go.

That’s when Wilson drilled his 3 off a nifty kick-out from McCormack, and Zegarowski missed an answering 3 as Braun gathered the rebound and was fouled. But the sharpshooter missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving Creighton a chance to tie. Zegarowski unloaded his attempt and Wilson got the slightest bit of arm.

Zegarowski hit the first free throw. And the second. The third clanked off the rim.

“It was a hell of a college basketball game an kind of unfortunate that somebody had to lose. Really unfortunate that it was us,” Creighton coach Greg McDermott said. “Really proud of our team, proud of how we competed.”

Zegarowski finished with 16 points, though he was hounded all night by defensive whiz Marcus Garrett and was 5 of 14 from the floor. Mahoney led the Bluejays with 19 points while Christian Bishop and Damien Jefferson had 13 apiece.

“Marcus is a perfectionist so he’s crushed,” McDermott said, “but like I told him, I can’t feel bad, because I know all the work he’s put himself in to prepare him for that moment. Sometimes you prepare and prepare and it doesn’t work out.”

The Bluejays survived an early 11-0 run by the Jayhawks, and they in turn dealt with an 0-for-8 slump midway through the first half. By the time it ended, Kansas had forged a 39-35 lead in a game that — at least compared two the fan-less first two games at Allen Fieldhouse — had the electricity of March.

It took less than two minutes for Creighton to take the lead.

Despite the experience of four returning starters, the Bluejays began to have turnover problems midway through the second half, and that allowed Kansas to begin edging ahead. Thompson hit a 3-pointer that tied the game, and Braun added another a few minutes later as the shot clock expired to give the Jayhawks a 58-50 lead.

Creighton went nearly four minutes without scoring later in the half, but the Jayhawks failed to capitalize, and they were left clinging to a 68-63 lead when Mahoney began his late takeover attempt that gave the Bluejays a chance.

After attendance was limited to about 100 close friends and family for its first two home games, Kansas had about 2,500 fans in the building. They were required to wear masks and there were two empty rows and 6 feet between each group.

Creighton was dominated on the glass, particularly the defensive end, where the bigger Jayhawks pulled down 13 offensive rebounds and turned them into 11 second-chance points. Some of the biggest came with the game on the line.

Kansas got little offensive production from Garrett and fellow starter Ochai Agbaji. Garrett was 3 of 10 from the floor and had nine points, and Agbaji was 0 for 6 and failed to score.

Creighton returns home to face Nebraska on Friday. Kansas faces Omaha the same night.

MLB Network was first to report that the sides had reached an agreement Tuesday. 

The 34-year-old Santana was an All-Star two years ago in Cleveland, when he hit a career-best .281 with 34 homers and 93 RBIs. But he slid to .199 with eight homers and 30 RBIs while playing 60 games during the shortened 2020 season, resulting in the Indians declining his $17.5 million option for the upcoming season.

Tipoff is set for 7 pm at Bramlage Coliseum. The game will air on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. This is an exhibition contest for FHSU, but will count toward Kansas State's regular season record. The Wildcats were left searching for a replacement in their schedule for a road contest at Butler University, which was supposed to be part of the Big 12/Big East Battle, that was canceled due to COVID-19 related issues at Butler. Fort Hays State will serve as the replacement in the schedule and this will be Kansas State's fifth-straight home game to start this season. This game is an exhibition for Fort Hays State since it cannot exceed the 22-regular season game maximum set for NCAA Division II schools this year. FHSU's entire regular season consists of a 22-game MIAA slate. There are no single-game tickets available for the contest to the general public, as K-State is limited to 15 percent capacity at Bramlage Coliseum, which will be filled by season-ticket holders. The Wildcats were left searching for a replacement in their schedule for a road contest at Butler University, which was supposed to be part of the Big 12/Big East Battle, that was canceled due to COVID-19 related issues at Butler. Fort Hays State will serve as the replacement in the schedule and this will be Kansas State's fifth-straight home game to start this season. This game is an exhibition for Fort Hays State since it cannot exceed the 22-regular season game maximum set for NCAA Division II schools this year. FHSU's entire regular season consists of a 22-game MIAA slate. There are no single-game tickets available for the contest to the general public, as K-State is limited to 15 percent capacity at Bramlage Coliseum, which will be filled by season-ticket holders. The Series The Tigers last played Kansas State in an exhibition contest to open the 2017-18 season. That contest was an exhibition for both teams, which Kansas State claimed 79-56. The Tigers and Wildcats have played three exhibitions at Kansas State since 2011-12, all claimed by the Wildcats. The last time the Tigers met an NCAA Division I school after the beginning of their regular season and still claimed it as exhibition was during the 2016-17 season when they took on the University of Colorado in Boulder. The last time Kansas State claimed a contest toward their regular season record against Fort Hays State was in 2009-10. The game was also a regular season contest for FHSU. The Tigers had a lead midway into the second half in that game before K-State ultimately prevailed by seven points. This will be the first time one of the teams claims this meeting as regular season, while it is an exhibition for the other. Kansas State leads the all-time regular season series 3-2. FHSU won the first two meetings between the teams in history back in 1936 and 1938. The Tigers won the only meeting ever between the teams in Hays in 1938, but all other meetings (regular season and exhibition), have been in Manhattan. K-State won all four exhibition games between the teams from 2007 to 2017. Player/Team Notes Jared Vitztum of FHSU is averaging a double-double so far this year at 21.7 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. He had new career highs in both categories at Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday, scoring 29 points and pulling down 15 rebounds.&nbsp;Quinten Rock leads the Tigers in assists at 5.0 per game, which ranks second in the MIAA. Fort Hays State ranks fourth among Division II teams in free-throw percentage, hitting at an 86 percent clip as a team. The Tigers are second among teams that have played at least two games. Kansas State's lone win this season was over Missouri-Kansas City by a score of 62-58 on November 30. The Wildcats fell to Drake, Colorado and UNLV in their other three contests this year, all at home. There’s much for Bob Davis to unpack in 48 years of broadcasting, and he does so in his recently released book "The Dream is Real: My Life on the Airwaves."

Davis, who spent 16 years at KAYS radio in Hays broadcasting Hays High, Thomas More Prep-Marian and Fort Hays State athletics, collaborated with Hays native Jeff Bollig to produce the retrospective of his hall of fame career. The book also includes contributions from more than 50 individuals who intersected with Davis — including a former Sunday school student, coaches, athletes, broadcasting peers and friends.

The book is available online at Amazon.com and will be in select Dillons Stores by Dec. 22 including Hays, Lawrence, Topeka, and Dillons Marketplace Stores in Wichita, Andover and Derby.  

The title of the book is based on the line Davis uttered as time expired in the 1988 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship won by Kansas.

“I’ve always considered myself a storyteller, so this was my way of doing so — but in a different medium than I had for 48 years,” Davis said. “While the book follows the chronology of my life, that just provides the platform for documenting history, sharing humorous stories and highlighting interesting people I’ve encountered during my career. It was a fun project, especially working with Jeff who has been such a good friend for so many years.”

Davis’s love of sports and storytelling was sparked at an early age, accompanying his father, who was the local sports editor, to the games of the Independence (Kan.) Yankees, a Class D team in the Kansas-Oklahoma-Missouri League. The star of the team was a 17-year-old shortstop by the name of Mickey Mantle. Fast forward to his college days where he decided to quit law school after one year and pursue broadcasting.

Davis' first job was at KAYS in 1968 as a disc jockey and camera operator. His big break came when sports director Keith Cummings took a job in Lansing, Mich., three months after Davis arrived. He was promoted to sports director.

“I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time,” Davis said. “I thought I’d only be in Hays a few years then move on. But KAYS was such a good station, Bob Schmidt was a wonderful boss and I got to broadcast many games — so I stayed 16 years. I tell people I was born in southeast Kansas, went to junior high and high school in eastern Kansas, but I grew up in Hays. It’s where I got my start, met my wife and we had our child. I loved Hays and its people.”

In 1984, Davis was named Voice of the Kansas Jayhawks, a position he held for 32 years until 2016. He also spent 16 years as sports director at KMBZ radio in Kansas City and 16 years broadcasting the Kansas City Royals. He retired from the Royals following the 2012 season. In his career, he was selected to the Kansas sports and broadcasters halls of fame. He is a 14-time Kansas Sportscaster of the Year.

“I’ve been blessed,” said Davis, who resides in Lawrence. “I’ve gotten to do what I dreamed of doing since I was a child. Plus I’ve met so many great people along the way. It’s been a wonderful life, as Jimmy Stewart said.”

Bollig is a 1980 Hays High graduate, attended Fort Hays State as a freshman and graduated from Kansas. It is there where he actually met Davis working as a student assistant in the Jayhawk athletic department.

“I joke with Bob that he was too much of a star for me to approach him while he was in Hays,” Bollig said. “I had a few opportunities to meet him, but I was just too reserved and nervous. It is a bit ironic because working at KU as a student then later at full-time we were in contact frequently and became very close. He’s just great to be around. He’s a wonderful person and incredibly funny. To do the book with him was certainly a highlight.”
