LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Ochai Agbaji made the go-ahead layup with 13 seconds left and finished with 23 points as No. 5 Kansas beat No. 14 Texas Tech 58-57 on Thursday night, giving the Jayhawks a win in their conference opener for the 30th season in a row.

Agbaji made four 3-pointers but got the game-winning points for the Jayhawks (7-1, 1-0 Big 12) when he worked inside and took an inbound pass from Marcus Garrett.

Texas Tech (6-2, 0-1) had one more opportunity, but Terrence Shannon Jr., who had 20 points and nine rebounds for the Red Raiders, had his mid-range jumper blocked by Jalen Wilson to end the game.

Garrett had 10 points, 10 rebounds and four assists for Kansas, which has never lost a Big 12 opener, and last lost a conference opener during the 1990-91 season in the old Big Eight Conference. Christian Braun also had 10 rebounds.

Mac McClung led Texas Tech with a season-high 21 points, but didn’t score in the last 11 minutes.

Vaughn is the second Wildcat to earn the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year award – joining Tyler Lockett (2011) – and the Round Rock, Texas native was also named a Second Team All-Big 12 running back, the first Wildcat true freshman in the Big 12 era to earn first- or second-team honors on offense from the league’s coaches.

Brooks was the First Team All-Big 12 kick and punt returner, the 14th&nbsp;time in the 25-year existence of the Big 12 – and the seventh time in the last eight years – that a Wildcat was a First Team All-Big 12 returner. Hubert was one of three players in the Big 12 to be a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 First Team, joining Iowa State running back Breece Hall and Texas offensive lineman Samuel Cosmi.

Joining Vaughn on the second team were tight end&nbsp;Briley Moore&nbsp;and offensive lineman&nbsp;Noah Johnson. Place kicker&nbsp;Blake Lynch, defensive back&nbsp;Jahron McPherson, linebacker&nbsp;Elijah Sullivan&nbsp;and defensive tackle&nbsp;Drew Wiley&nbsp;each picked up Honorable Mention All-Big 12 accolades.

In addition to their placing on various teams, Hubert also earned votes for the Big 12 Defensive Player and Lineman of the Year awards, Johnson for the Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year award and Moore for the Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year Award. Vaughn is one of only two players in the nation to top 600 rushing yards and 400 receiving yards so far in 2020, joining Clemson senior running back Travis Etienne, and is the only player in the Big 12 to lead his team in both rushing and receiving yards. He ranks fourth in the Big 12 in rushing (64.2 yards per game) and 10th&nbsp;in scoring (5.4 points per game) and is the top freshman in both categories. He also ranks fifth in the nation among freshmen, third in the Big 12 overall and tops among freshmen in the league in all-purpose yards per game (112.1).

In the final regular season game against Texas, Vaughn broke the K-State freshman records for rushing yards (642), all-purpose yards (1,221), yards from scrimmage (1,076) and total touchdowns (9), needing only 10 games to do so.

Brooks totaled 411 return yards this season, including 261 punt-return yards and a pair of touchdowns. His 23.7-yard average on punt returns is tops in school history and would lead the nation if he had the required minimum amount of returns.

A native of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Brooks set the school record with 189 punt-return yards against Kansas and took two punts back for touchdowns, the most by a Big 12 player in a conference game in league history. Additionally, his 47.25-yard average against KU was the highest by any player in the nation with at least four attempts since at least 1996.

Hubert, a product of Topeka, Kansas, earned his second-straight First Team All-Big 12 honor as his 8.5 sacks tied for the Big 12 lead and ranked 25th&nbsp;nationally during the regular season. He also tied for third with 13.0 tackles for loss. His season totals were given a boost when he tallied a career-high 2.5 sacks against Oklahoma State, the most by a Wildcat in a conference game since 2013.

The junior ranks first nationally among non-seniors with 20.0 career sacks, while he is fourth overall among active players with 0.59 career sacks.

People in sports like to talk about how hard work gets a player where they want to go. Most are unwilling or unable to follow through with the commitment that is required. Gaven Haselhorst isn't most people. He is the shining example of where hard work can take a student-athlete.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, the 220-pound senior defensive end signed his National Letter of Intent to play football for Kansas State University. The Wildcats offered Haselhorst a scholarship after a superb showing at the Sharp Combine in Salina over the summer. It took the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year little time to make his decision to commit. Haselhorst cites the family atmosphere as a big reason for his decision.

Hays High coach Tony Crough believes that Haselhorst hasn't even began to reach his potentional. Haselhorst is really only about three years into his football career. Track was always the go-to and he never had a natural position on the football field — that was, until his sophomore season. The coaching staff had moved Haselhorst from linebacker to running back without much success. Defensive line coach Mitch Harris told Crough to let him have Haselhorst ... the rest is history.&nbsp;

Haselhorst plastered his name all over conference and state team honors. He most recently was named to the Kansas Football Coaches Association defensive first team in 5A and listed as one of the All Class Top 11. Sports In Kansas also named him as a finalist for 5A Defensive Player of the Year.&nbsp;

As much as the seniors stalky build stood out on signing day his play on the field impressed even more. Haselhorst's #22 jersey was in the backfield as much as some running backs. The numbers backed up his play. He finished second on the team in total tackles with 77. An eye-popping 32 of those were tackles for loss including six sacks, three forced fumbles and a pair of fumble recoveries. Haselhorst finished his high school career with 211 tackles, 10 sacks, 54 tackles for loss, 6 forced fumbles, and 5 fumble recoveries.&nbsp;

As a result, K-State officials also have informed the Big 12 Conference that the school will not be able to field enough players to prepare for and play in a bowl game later this month. By finishing seventh in the Big 12 regular-season standings, the Wildcats were in line to compete in a bowl game. “This has been an unbelievably challenging year for everyone, but we were very excited to have the opportunity to end the season in a bowl game,” Athletics Director Gene Taylor said. “But, with new positive cases and additional close contacts in our program, we would not have enough players to continue practices and field a team for the bowl game. I want to thank our student-athletes and coaches for their tireless effort this year and for being flexible during a time when every day presented new challenges.” “It certainly is a bittersweet ending to the season, but playing 10 regular-season games throughout all of this uncertainty was nothing short of a miracle,” Head Coach Chris Klieman added. “I want to thank our players, especially our seniors, for continuing to battle each and every day, no matter what circumstance was put before them. This season was difficult and frustrating, but I think it is also one that we will remember for the rest of our lives. AMES, Iowa (AP) — DaJuan Gordon scored 15 points, making all 11 free throws, Kansas State made seven of eight from the line in the last 41 seconds, turning aside a late Iowa State surge 74-65 Tuesday night in a Big 12 Conference opener.

Gordon also grabbed 11 rebounds for his first career double-double as the Wildcats (3-4, 1-0) held a 35-25 edge on the boards.

Kansas State started three true freshman in a Big 12 game for the first time and the trio came through. Davion Bradford scored 14 points, Nijel Pack and Selton Miguel each added eight points with three steals.

As Iowa State stubbornly whittled away at Kansas State’s double-digit lead down the stretch, Pack stole the ball and scored on a fastbreak layup, pushing the lead back to 67-57 with just under two minutes to go.

Rasir Bolton paced the Cyclones (1-3, 0-1) with 19 points on 7-for-10 shooting but turned the ball over seven times. Tyler Harris added 10 points and drained a rare 3-pointer for Iowa State (which was 5 of 20 from distance at the time) to cut the gap to 67-60. Each team then called a timeout to set up for the final 96 seconds.

The teams each had eight steals and Kansas State made 17 turnovers to Iowa State’s 18, but the Wildcats were able to score 24 points off turnovers to Iowa State’s 14.

The Wildcats put together runs of 13-0 and 10-2 to break away for a 40-26 lead at halftime. The 13-0 run midway through the first half featured back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers — two from Carlton Linguard (10 points) and another from Rudi Williams (10).

Aside from that flurry of long-distance shooting, K-State was 4-for-23 from 3-point range.

🏀 Gordon leads young K-State to 74-65 win in Big 12 opener

EDMOND, Okla. - For a second straight game the Fort Hays State women's basketball team used a strong second half to carry them to a win, defeating Central Oklahoma 81-60 Tuesday night at Hamilton Field House.

The Tigers (3-0, 3-0 MIAA) led by two at the half but thanks in part to five 3-pointers, pushed the lead to 13 after three quarters. They then scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to build the lead to 23.

Jaden Hobbs led four Tigers in double-figures with 19 points. The Alva, Oklahoma native went 4-of-5 from beyond the arc, dished out four assists and had eight steals which are the most for a Tiger since Ashlee Gustin totaled eight steals in back-to-back games against New Mexico Highlands (12/11/04) and CSU-Pueblo (12/16/04).

Madison Mitte added 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc. Whitney Randall and Cydney Bergman both scored 11 points.

&nbsp; he Tigers forced 21 turnovers in the game and scored 29 points off of those turnovers, while UCO turned 12 FHSU miscues into just seven points. Fort Hays State was outrebounded for the first time this season, 42-33. After hitting 11 shots from deep on Saturday, the Tigers knocked in 13 from behind the arc against the Bronchos, 10 of them came after halftime.&nbsp;

The Tigers will return to Gross Memorial Coliseum this weekend for two more contests before the mandatory holiday break. FHSU will host Northeastern State beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Friday (Dec. 18) before wrapping up 2020 against Rogers State at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon (Dec. 20).&nbsp;&nbsp;

🏀 Strong second half carries Tiger women to win at UCO

Hays took to the road for the first time in the 2020-21 season with a trip to Hoisington.

Hays matched their season average in points and total field goals made in the first half against Hoisington on their way to a 56-32 victory. The Indians trailed just once at 1-0 the rattled off a 10-0 run started by an Ashlyn Flax three point play.&nbsp;

Following the 10-1 lead the game was never closer than eight points rest of the night. Ginny Ke in her first career start dumped in ten first half points on the way to a career high thirteen...her first career varsity points. Ke would hit a three with one minute remaining in the second quarter for a 29-13 halftime lead.&nbsp;

The Indians pushed the lead to as high as 26 late in the third quarter before the Lady Cards made their first big push. Leading 44-18 the Indians watched Hoisington go on a 12-0 run. That run through only cut the lead down to 14 at 44-30. Hays would only allow two points over the final four minutes for the final margin of 56-32.

Hays was led by the double double of Aleyia Ruder with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Ginny Ke scored her first career varsity points and dumped in 13 in the process.

Hays improves to 1-3 and will open Western Athletic Conference play Friday by hosting Liberal. Hoisington falls to 2-3.

#6-5A Hays 64 - #5-3A Hoisington 63

Hays and Hoisington each led in each of the first two quarters in the state ranked show down. Hays entered #6 in 5A while Hoisington came in #5 in 3A. Hoisington had the advantage by halftime using eight of twelve shooting beyond the arc for a 37-31 lead.

The Cardinals broke a nine all time in the first quarter with an 8-0 run. Hays took the lead back early in the second quarter capping a 13-4 run for a 22-21 advantage. Hoisington took the lead back just fifteen seconds later on a three pointer and kept the lead for the rest of the quarter.

Hoisington continued to lead for the entire third quarter and built their lead to a game high nine at 48-39 with thirty seconds left in the quarter. Hays cut the lead down to seven 48-41 before the end of the third and continued to chip away. The Indians tied the game on free throws at 52 and then on a three pointer at 58 with 2:40 remaining.

Neither team would score over the final two plus minutes. Hays struck first in over time and never trailed. Hoisington tied the game at 60 with two minutes left and had the ball back but turned it over on a charge.&nbsp;

Hays had a chance to ice the game from the free throw line and did it in a dramatic way. The Indians made just four of eight free throws over the final thirty seconds. But on misses with nine seconds and six seconds left Jordan Dale and Dalyn Schwartz secured offensive rebounds. Schwarz then gave Hays a 64-60 lead with 3.6 on the clock. The Cardinals banked in a three at the buzzer for a 64-63 victory for Hays.

Carson Kieffer tied a career high with 19. Jason Krannawitter set a career high with 16. Dalyn Schwarz added 12 for the now 4-0 Hays High Indians. Drew Nicholson scored 25 to lead 4-1 Hoisington.

The 1-3 Tigers close out first semester play at home this Friday against Northeastern State Friday night (7:30pm) and Rogers State Sunday afternoon (4:00pm).

It will follow the Kansas High School Activities Association policy, which will allow two parents or guardians per participant family to attend school events.

The impacted interscholastic activities include basketball, debate, forensics/speech, scholars bowl and wrestling.

The policy will be in effect until Jan. 28.

Parents/guardians should be prepared to state their name and provide ID in order to gain admittance.

Spectators will be required to wear masks and social distance. Concessions will be available, but this does not mean a spectator can remove his or her mask indefinitely.

Parents/guardians are there to support their child while in competition. Spectators can't attend all games in the facility on a given day, according to the policy.

TMP-M releases details of spectator policy

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -&nbsp;The Kansas City Royals announced today that they have re-signed free agent pitcher&nbsp;Greg Holland. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Holland, 35, went 3-0 with six saves and a 1.91 ERA (6 ER in 28.1 IP) in 28 appearances with the Royals in 2020. The right hander ranked fifth among Major League relievers (min. 25.0 IP) in ERA, eighth in WHIP (0.95) and eighth in opponents’ average (.200). Of his 28 appearances, 23 were scoreless, which tied for third most in the Majors behind teammate&nbsp;Scott Barlow&nbsp;(25) and the Angels’&nbsp;Mike Mayers&nbsp;(24). Holland finished the season with a 13.1-inning scoreless streak, which spanned his final 13 appearances from Aug. 26 through season’s end.

The 2020 season marked Holland’s second stint with the Royals, after spending his first six Major League seasons from 2010-15 in Kansas City, the franchise that selected him in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft. Holland ranks fourth in franchise history with 151 saves, behind only&nbsp;Jeff Montgomery&nbsp;(304),&nbsp;Dan Quisenberry (238) and&nbsp;Joakim Soria&nbsp;(162). CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians are changing their name after 105 years.

Citing three people familiar with the decision, The New York Times reported Sunday night that the team is moving away from a name considered racist for decades. The Indians have been internally discussing a potential name change for months.

A team spokesman told The Associated Press the franchise has no immediate comment on the report.

The Times said the team could make a formal announcement later this week. It’s not known when the name change will take effect or if the team has settled on a new moniker.

Cleveland’s move away from Indians follows a similar decision earlier this year by the NFL’s Washington Football Team, which was previously known as the Redskins.

For years, Native American groups and others have protested against Cleveland’s use of Indians as its name as well as other imagery used by the American League charter franchise founded in 1901. Last year, the team removed the contentious Chief Wahoo logo from its caps and jerseys, but the smiling, cartoonish mascot has remained popular and merchandise is still sold bearing its image.

The Indians have dealt with a backlash from fans upset over Chief Wahoo’s removal and the club is certain to hear more with the decision to change its name.

“Oh no! What is going on?” President Donald Trump tweeted. “This is not good news, even for ”Indians”. Cancel culture at work!”

In July, just hours after Washington’s plans became known after being pressured by several sponsors, including FedEx which holds naming rights to the football’s team’s stadium, Cleveland owner Paul Dolan released a statement saying the team would review “the best path forward with our team name.”

In the months since, the team has consulted players, front office members, coaching staff, community leaders, share holders and Native American groups.

A few days after Dolan’s statement, Indians manager Terry Francona said it was time to “move forward” with the name change.

“I’ve been thinking about it and been thinking about it before we put out that statement,” said Francona, who has been with the club since 2013. “I know in the past, when I’ve been asked about, whether it’s our name or the Chief Wahoo, I think I would usually answer and say I know that we’re never trying to be disrespectful.

“And I still feel that way. But I don’t think that’s a good enough answer today. I think it’s time to move forward. It’s a very difficult subject. It’s also delicate.”

🏈 Chiefs clinch division despite 4 turnovers, beat Miami

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Drew Lock threw for 280 yards and a career-high four touchdowns, Diontae Spencer returned a punt 83 yards for his first career score and the Denver Broncos held on to beat the Carolina Panthers 32-27 on Sunday.

Lock connected on touchdown throws of 49 and 37 yards to rookie KJ Hamler and also threw scoring strikes to Nick Vannett and Tim Patrick to help the Broncos snap a two-game losing streak.

The Broncos (5-8) sacked Teddy Bridgewater four times, including one by Dre’Mont Jones on Carolina’s final possession in which the Panthers turned the ball over on downs.

Teddy Bridgewater threw for 283 yards in the loss for the Panthers (4-9), who have lost seven of their last eight.

Mike Davis’ second touchdown run of the game with with 3:26 left cut Denver’s lead to 32-25 and the Panthers lined up for an apparent onside kick.

But instead, Joey Slye squib-kicked the ball down the field and Carolina pinned Denver at the 7. They forced a quick three-and-out to get the ball back with 2:48 left in the game — plenty of time to pull out a victory.

But the Broncos held when Curtis Samuel was tackled well short of the first down marker on a fourth-and-8 pass play underneath the coverage.

Hamler, the team’s second-round draft pick, twice beat veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas for touchdowns.

The Broncos took advantage of a big special teams play and some costly Carolina penalties to take a 13-7 lead at halftime.

Spencer, activated from reserve/COVID-19 list this week, gave the Broncos an early 6-0 lead when he received a punt, sidestepped one tackler and raced 83 yards for a touchdown.

The Panthers took a 7-6 lead on a 3-yard touchdown run by Davis, but two defensive penalties on the ensuing drive proved costly. Brian Burns was flagged for roughing the passer on a third-down incompletion and linebacker Jermaine Carter penalized for taunting after a run stop near the goal line setting up a 2-yard touchdown pass from Lock to Vannett for the 13-7 lead.

Panthers rookie linebacker Jeremy Chinn, who had two fumble returns for touchdowns in Carolina’s 28-27 loss to the Vikings, came up with another big play, sacking Lock and stripping him him of the ball. Efe Obada snatched the loose ball and returned it to the Denver 3, setting up a TD run by Davis.

Broncos: Reserve cornerback Duke Dawson was carted off the field in the first quarter after a non-contact injury to his left knee and did not return. Dawson was rushing the quarterback when he tried to stop and make a cut, only to have his leg buckle. ... TE Noah Fant left in the second quarter with an illness and did not return.

Panthers: Running back Christian McCaffrey missed his 10th game this season with an injury.

Panthers: Travel to face the Packers on Saturday night.

(AP) — Drew Lock threw for 280 yards and a career-high four touchdowns, Diontae Spencer returned a punt 83 yards for his first career score and the Denver Broncos held on to beat the Carolina Panthers 32-27 on Sunday.Lock connected on touchdown throws of 49 and 37 yards to rookie KJ Hamler and also threw scoring strikes to Nick Vannett and Tim Patrick to help the Broncos snap a two-game losing streak.The Broncos (5-8) sacked Teddy Bridgewater four times, including one by Dre’Mont Jones on Carolina’s final possession in which the Panthers turned the ball over on downs.Teddy Bridgewater threw for 283 yards in the loss for the Panthers (4-9), who have lost seven of their last eight.Mike Davis’ second touchdown run of the game with with 3:26 left cut Denver’s lead to 32-25 and the Panthers lined up for an apparent onside kick.But instead, Joey Slye squib-kicked the ball down the field and Carolina pinned Denver at the 7. WICHITA - Caleb Hammeke scored a career-high 20 points and Jared Vitztum added his third straight double-double to help the Fort Hays State Tigers to an 81-75 overtime win over Newman for their first win of the season Saturday at Fugate Gymnasium.

The Tigers played their second straight game without head coach Mark Johnson who's in isolation after testing positive for COVID-19. They did have associate head coach Jeremy Brown back on the bench after missing the Kansas State exhibition game while in quarintine

The game was tight throughout with 11 ties and 11 lead changes and neither team leading by more than seven.

The Tigers (1-3, 1-3 MIAA) took a 35-31 lead at halftime thanks to an 9-0 run to close out the half. Gilbert Peters and Jared Vitzum combined to score the final 12 points of the half for the Tigers who held the Jets (1-4, 1-4 MIAA) to two free throws over the final 4:18.

Newman outscored the Tigers 16-5 to start the second half and built their biggest lead at 47-40 with 14:41 to play.

FHSU answered with 16-5 run to retake the lead at 56-54 lead on a Quinten Rock jumper with 8:48 to play.

The Tigers led by four with just under two minutes to play but they missed three of their last four free throws. Newman's Joel Boyce, who scored all of his team-high 18 points in the second half an overtime, hit a 3-pointer with 27 seconds to play to tie the game at 68-68 and eventual force overtime.

After both teams exchanged baskets to start the extra period, the Tigers went on a 8-1 run to take back the lead for good.

Hammeke led four Tigers in double-figures with a career-best 20 points, Vitztum added 19 and 10 rebounds, Gilbert Peters a career-high 18 and Rock added 15 on 3-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc.

🏀 Tiger men hold off Newman in OT for first win

WICHITA - After being held to only 22 points in the first half, the Fort Hays State women exploded for 31 in the third quarter and blew past Newman 68-48 Saturday afternoon at Fugate Gymnasium.

The Tigers (2-0, 2-0 MIAA)went scoreless in the 5:09 of the second quarter and led 22-21 at the half. After the Jets made the first basket of the third quarter to take a 23-22 lead, the Tigers scored the next 12 points and never looked back, pushing the lead to as many as 26 early in the fourth.

After being held to 25-percent shooting in the first half, went 10-for-15 from the floor in the third period including 6-of-8 from beyond the arc.

Whitney Randall led four Tigers in double-figures with 15 points. Jaden Hobbs went 3-for-6 from beyond the arc and scored 12, freshman Sydney Golladay hit a couple of third quarter threes during the decisive run and scored all of her 11 points in the second half while pulling down six rebounds and dishing out three assists.. Cydney Bergman added 10 points.

FHSU travels to Edmond, Oklahoma to play Central Oklahoma Tuesday at 6:00 pm.

KEARNEY, Neb. - The Fort Hays State women's track and field team opened its season with a strong performance at the UNK Pre-Holiday Classic, winning the triangular meet against Nebraska-Kearney and Southwest Baptist. The Tigers racked up 101 team points on the day thanks to four provisional performances, while Nebraska-Kearney totaled 99 points and SBU picked up 79 points. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5966">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;took second in the 60m finals, posting an NCAA provisional mark with a personal-best 7.65. After capturing national attention earlier in the week with a 13-point exhibition win at Kansas State University, the Fort Hays State Men's Basketball team returns to action on Saturday (Dec. 12) at Newman University. Tipoff is set for 3:30 pm at Fugate Gymnasium in Wichita. The Tigers are looking to notch their first regular season win of the season. Newman is not allowing any of the general public to attend home games right now, so the only way to watch the Tigers on Saturday will be on&nbsp;<a href="https://themiaanetwork.com/fhsutigers/">The MIAA Network</a>. A season subscription is $100, which gives you all games in the MIAA for the entire season, or a day pass (24-hour access) is $10. The Tigers dropped their first three contests by a combined eight points, which included a buzzer-beating shot by Washburn in the season opener. The Tigers lost by two to Washburn, two to Emporia State, and four to Nebraska-Kearney. Fort Hays State swept the regular season series with Newman last year, scoring a seven-point win in Hays and a 10-point win in Wichita.
