There are several changes coming to the postseason in basketball. The changes are similar to how postseason volleyball was played.

In each classification there will be geographical tournaments. Classes 3A and below remain with up to eight in each Sub-State juast as before. Classes 4A, 5A, and 6A had been seeded 1-18 in based on an east and west formula. They will placed in groups of four or five schools.

Winners from each classes eight Sub-States will not move onto the State Tournament site. Instead group 1 will play group 2, group 3 v group 4 and so on. The higher seed will host in each matchup.&nbsp;

The four winning teams will move on to the State Tournament site later in the week. Semi-finals will be played on Friday and Championships on Saturday. There will be no third place games. Third place trophies and medals will be given to the two teams not advancing from the semi-finals.

Hays High is in group 1 of 5A with Great Bend, Salina Central and Salina South. The higher seed will host each game.

TMP is in group 2 of 3A with Beloit, Colby, Goodland, Minneapolis, Norton, Phillipsburg and Russell. The Sub-State is hosted by Norton where the semi-finals and finals will be played.

KSHSAA Releases Sub-State Assignments

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Not even Kansas coach Bill Self was going to look for something nitpick about the No. 6 Jayhawks after an impressive bounce-back game played without their senior starting point guard.

David McCormack had a season-high 20 points to lead five Kansas players in double figures, and the Jayhawks beat TCU 93-64 on Tuesday night to match their own Big 12 record by winning their 11th consecutive conference road game.

It came only three days after a 25-point home loss to Texas that matched the most lopsided win by an opponent in the 65-year history of Allen Fieldhouse.

“Not to be full strength and kind of have guys rally around that after the way we played Saturday,” Self said. “We did a lot of things that should give us confidence going forward.”

Marcus Garrett didn’t play in the game close to his Dallas home, still dealing with symptoms after taking a elbow to the head while going for a rebound against Texas. Freshman DaJuan Harris Jr. made his first start at point guard, scoring seven points with seven assists and only one turnover in 27 minutes.

Ochai Agbaji, while dealing with a sore hamstring, added 19 points for the Jayhawks (9-2, 3-1 Big 12). Jalen Wilson scored 16, Tristan Enaruna had a career-high 12 and Christian Braun 10.

“It was a great win, it’s what we needed. We all know the team that performed Saturday wasn’t the team that performed today,” McCormack said. “It was a reminder of what we could do.”

Chuck O’Bannon Jr. had a career-high 18 points to lead the Horned Frogs (9-3, 2-2), who had their five-game winning streak snapped. R.J. Nembhard had 14, below his Big 12-leading scoring average of 18.7 points and ending his streak of four 20-point games in a row.

TCU was within 28-24 after scoring seven consecutive points in 41 seconds, that spurt capped by Nembhard’s alley-oop pass to Kevin Samuel for a dunk after PJ Fuller’s steal. The Jayhawks called timeout, then responded with a 12-2 run that put them up by double digits the rest of the game.

“They punched us in the face early, and we certainly didn’t respond throughout. I didn’t see it coming,” TCU coach Jamie Dixon said. “I don’t know how it occurred and why we played like we did.”

Wilson started the KU spurt with a 3-pointer, and the freshman from nearby Denton also had a breakaway layup after getting a rebound on Mike Miles’ 3-point attempt that didn’t even make it to the rim. A strong inside move by the 6-foot-10 McCormack around TCU big man Samuel stretched the lead to 40-26 with just over five minutes left in the first half.

The Jayhawks still led by 14 at halftime before McCormack had five free throws, one as part of a three-point play, and Agbaji made a 3-pointer in a quick 10-2 run to start the second half.

“As I told the guys, I think the biggest message I gave them was like, ‘Hey, Kansas, I think they felt like us right now the other day.’ We need to respond like Kansas did,” Dixon said. “They came out and just took care of business and dominated in every area.”

Kansas: The Jayhawks are 98-13 after a loss in Self’s 18 seasons. After last season becoming the first Big 12 team to go 9-0 on the road in the same season, they have won their first two league road games this season — they won 58-57 at No. 18 Texas Tech in their conference opener on Dec. 17. Their previous 11-game Big 12 road winning streak was between Feb. 25, 2001 and Jan. 6, 2013.

TCU: A frustrating night for the Frogs, who were looking to build on the momentum of their winning streak. Miles was averaging 14.8 points per game, already with three 20-point games. LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Terrence Shannon Jr. volunteered to come off the bench, which Texas Tech coach Chris Beard appreciated.

The sophomore guard was on the floor with a second remaining in the first half, and that mattered more.

Shannon beat the halftime buzzer with a jumper on his way to 22 points, Mac McClung added 16 and the No. 18 Red Raiders beat Kansas State 82-71 on Tuesday night.

“You guys know we’re always kind of tinkering with our starting lineup to see what can give us the best chance on any given night,” Beard said. “TJ actually came to me as a veteran player and said, ‘Hey coach, whatever you need tonight.’”

Marcus Santos-Silva scored 11 of his 14 points in the first half as the Red Raiders (9-3, 2-2 Big 12) picked up their first conference home victory after losing two, including to Oklahoma State three days earlier, while beating the Wildcats in Lubbock for the seventh straight time.

Shannon, who didn’t start for the first time in his 11 games this season, caught an inbound pass near the free-throw line with 1 second left in the first half and hoisted a one-handed shot that bounced on the rim several times before dropping well after the buzzer sounded for a 36-31 halftime lead.

The sophomore stole a pass for a one-handed breakaway dunk during a 9-0 run in the second half for a 58-41 lead, Texas Tech’s largest of the game. Shannon made 11 of 12 free throws.

“For me it wasn’t really an adjustment,” Shannon said. “I told him before the game whatever we got to do to win and if it’s me coming off the bench, I told him I’d be fine with that. It worked all right.”

Nigel Pack, one of three freshmen making a seventh straight start for Kansas State (5-7, 1-3), scored 15 of his season-high 17 points in the first half. Fellow freshman Selton Miguel matched his season high with 17 points.

Texas Tech freshman Micah Peavy, starting again after coming off the bench for the first time and going scoreless in a loss to Oklahoma State, scored the first four points of the game and finished with nine.

Santos-Silva, a graduate transfer from VCU and Texas Tech’s only senior, scored the next seven points after Peavy’s fast start.

A quick start for Kansas State fueled by Pack’s 3-point shooting fizzled with a 15-2 first-half run by Texas Tech that gave the Red Raiders a 25-19 lead.

The Wildcats, who led by one briefly late in the first half before falling behind for good, have lost three straight Big 12 games since winning their only other true road game of the season at Iowa State.

“We talked about growing and progressing,” coach Bruce Weber said. “You can’t improve unless you grow and progress. I thought we made some steps forward on some things.”

Kansas State: The freshmen showed their youth, starting with 7-footer Davion Bradford drawing an unnecessary fourth foul early in the second half. Miguel and Seryee Lewis were later called for technical fouls. Miguel was apparently for saying something to the officials, while Lewis appeared to taunt Santos-Silva after a basket.

“Our guys have to be more mature,” Weber said. “They’re freshmen. Those are things that they did, and it’s habits they’ve had. We have talked about it in practice. Obviously they made a mistake. They learned from it. Now you can’t have it again.”

Texas Tech: The Red Raiders cruised despite allowing their highest shooting percentage this season. Kansas State shot 49% against one of the nation’s best defensive teams, although a hot start from 3 for the Wildcats cooled off in the second half (3 of 13 after halftime for 8 of 24 overall).

Peavy played just nine minutes in the 82-77 home loss in overtime to Oklahoma State after starting the first 10 games of his career. After the two quick buckets, the 2020 high school player of the year in Texas’ highest classification finished 3 of 4 from the field and on free throws with three rebounds and two assists in 23 minutes.

“It’s hard being a freshman,” McClung said. “We believe in Micah and we really need Micah to be great. So we constantly remind him of that.”

DENVER (AP) — John Elway announced a major change in the Denver Broncos’ football operations Monday, saying he’ll hire a general manager who will report to him but have final say on the draft, free agency and the roster.

Elway, who has been GM since 2011, will remain as president of football operations in 2021, the final year of his contract.

“Working in this role for the last 10 years and going back to my playing days, I’ve always tried to do everything I can to help the Broncos win and get better,” Elway said in a statement. “As part of a transition I’ve thought about for a long time, I have made the decision to step up into an elevated role and hire a general manager to lead our personnel and football staff.”

Elway engineered a dramatic turnaround of the franchise when he returned to his beloved Broncos a decade ago, building a team that reached the playoffs in each of his first five seasons and added a third Lombardi Trophy to go with the two he won in Denver during his Hall of Fame playing career.

Elway moved on from Tim Tebow after one season, luring Peyton Manning to Denver in 2012 for the second chapter of his storied career after the Colts cut their star quarterback following a series of neck fusion surgeries.

Manning led the Broncos to a 55-17 mark over his four seasons, which included two trips to the Super Bowl, a loss to Seattle in Super Bowl 48 and a win over Carolina in Super Bowl 50.

Manning retired a month later and the Broncos haven't been the same since.

Since piling onto fire trucks and parading the Lombardi Trophy through downtown Denver on Feb. 9, 2016, the Broncos have won just 32 of 80 games, posted four consecutive losing seasons for the first time in half a century and have churned through 10 starting quarterbacks (including a practice squad receiver in 2020), five offensive coordinators and three head coaches.

Head coach Vic Fangio is 12-20, just one game better than the 11-21 mark that got his predecessor, Vance Joseph, fired.

But Fangio is returning in 2021, and Elway said Fangio will have a say in who’s hired as GM, as will team president Joe Ellis.

Elway said the new GM will be “empowered to make all football decisions, working in partnership with Vic.”

“John Elway is the most important and impactful person in the history of the Denver Broncos. I have nothing but gratitude for how he accepted this challenge 10 years ago and helped us accomplish great things as an organization,” Ellis said in a statement.

Ellis, who, like Elway, contracted the coronavirus in the fall, said that in recent weeks he and Elway huddled for “very positive and honest conversations” about improving the team and about Elway’s future.

“John arrived at this decision, and I am fully supportive of him and this new structure,” Ellis added. “With all of his experience and competitive fire, I know John will be a tremendous resource for the Broncos in this role.”

Elway said he “will be there to support our GM and Vic, providing my perspective, helping with the big decisions and being a sounding board whenever needed. With all that goes into the day-to-day responsibilities of a GM and how the job has grown, this structure will set us up for success and allow me to focus on the big picture.”

“This is a great place with all the resources to win. We have a lot of good people on the football side, and I’ll be there for them in any way possible.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chargers spent Sunday reveling in the future of their young quarterback and pondering the fate of their head coach.

The Chiefs spent it looking forward to the playoffs.

In a game that was in many ways meaningless, Justin Herbert threw for 302 yards and accounted for four touchdowns against a team of mostly Kansas City backups, and Los Angeles rolled to a 38-21 victory at Arrowhead Stadium that should at least give its owners something to ponder ahead of their end-of-season meeting with coach Anthony Lynn.

Reports surfaced earlier in the day that Lynn could be fired as soon as Monday. And while the Chargers (7-9) finished with four straight wins, and Herbert has emerged as their franchise quarterback, the fate of Lynn may have been sealed weeks ago when they were eliminated from playoff contention for the second consecutive year.

“As of right now I’m still under contract. That’s how I feel,” said Lynn, who is 33-31 in four seasons. “I think we’ve done a good job here, under the circumstances. Yeah, I’d like to be the head coach here. But right now I’m under contract.”

Herbert made it clear Lynn has his support: “I believe in him,” he said. “I believe in this coaching staff. I believe in this team.”

Mike Williams, Donald Parham Jr. and Austin Ekeler had touchdown catches for the Chargers, though Ekeler’s season ended with a concussion late in the first half. Herbert also sneaked in for a score and Los Angeles added a sack of Chiefs quarterback Chad Henne for a safety as the game turned into a rout.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, already had wrapped up the No. 1 seed and the AFC’s lone first-round bye, so coach Andy Reid chose rest over reps by sitting quarterback Patrick Mahomes, safety Tyrann Mathieu and several of his best players.

“This was a lot like a fourth preseason game where we asked these guys to play offense, defense and special teams and there weren’t a lot of backups I was going to play,” Reid said, “so they really had to push through it.”

Henne, making his first start since September 2014 with Jacksonville, threw for 218 yards with his first two TD passes in 2,303 days. Byron Pringle caught the first early in the game and Darwin Thompson grabbed the second late.

In fact, Henne looked a bit like Mahomes — if you squinted really hard — much of the first half.

The 35-year-old journeyman was 6 for 6 on the Chiefs’ opening drive, which ended with a flick to Pringle in the back of the end zone. He was nearly as sharp on their second drive, when Pringle hauled in a batted pass and was tackled at the 1-yard line and Thompson promptly pounded the ball into the end zone.

“Great to get back in the end zone,” Henne said, “and great to celebrate with the guys.”

While Henne played the role of wily veteran, the first-year phenom Herbert more than matched him.

The 22-year-old quarterback answered Henne’s opening drive with a perfect one of his own, going 6 for 6 and capping it with Parham’s 8-yard TD catch. Herbert’s second drive fizzled but Chiefs returner Mecole Hardman fumbled away another punt, and Herbert capitalized with a touchdown pass to Ekeler a few minutes later.

The safety and Herbert’s TD sneak gave the Chargers a 24-14 halftime lead, and the No. 6 overall draft pick’s 48-yard toss to Williams late in the third quarter gave him a rookie record six games with at least three touchdown passes.

Earlier in the game, Herbert passed Carson Wentz’s rookie record of 379 completions in a season. His four total TDs gave him 36 this season, passing Cam Newton’s rookie record, and he became the youngest QB in NFL history to eclipse 30 touchdown passes. He finished with 4,336 yards passing, just 39 off Andrew Luck’s rookie record.

“He’s the best rookie in the league. He proved that this season,” Williams said. “Didn’t he break, like, every rookie record? So yeah, rookie of the year for sure.”

Mahomes finished his third season as the starter with 4,740 yards, 38 touchdown passes and six interceptions. He was joined on the Chiefs inactive list by wide receivers Hill (hamstring) and Sammy Watkins (calf), running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (ankle), linebacker Ben Niemann (hamstring) and right tackle Mike Remmers (back). Mathieu was a healthy scratch while linebacker Anthony Hitchens remained on the COVID-19 list.

The Chargers were without Pro Bowl selections Allen (COVID-19) and Joey Bosa (concussion and shin). They also didn’t have tight end Hunter Henry (COVID-19), right tackle Bryan Bulaga (foot), cornerback Casey Hayward (hamstring), left tackle Sam Tevi (knee) and safeties Rayshawn Jenkins (ankle) and Jahleel Addae (calf).

DENVER (AP) — This time, Shelby Harris wasn’t there to knock down Derek Carr’s 2-point conversion pass in the closing seconds.

Darren Waller hauled in Carr’s 2-point conversion pass with 24 seconds left Sunday and Las Vegas rallied past the Broncos 32-31.

Carr’s revenge came three days after the Broncos put Harris, who leads the league’s D-linemen with 16 pass breakups since 2019, on injured reserve with a knee injury.

“Two-point play. Same spot in the end zone. Same everything,” Carr said. “Defensive linemen jumping in the air, but this time they didn’t touch it.”

The Broncos (5-11) reached the Las Vegas 45-yard line with 9 seconds left and Brandon McManus’ 63-yard field-goal try was&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Raiders/status/1345896970338983936?s=20" target="_blank">blocked by Maxx Crosby</a>, who also blocked McManus’ record 70-yard attempt on the last play of the first half.

With that, the Raiders (8-8) avoided a fourth straight losing season and a 10th consecutive loss in their season finale. They also handed coach Jon Gruden his first win in Denver in eight tries.

“It’s great to settle that score. There were a few teams there with Mike Shanahan, they looked forward to seeing us come to town,” Gruden said, adding, “I’m glad you said that. I’m going to have a Coors Light before I leave.”

The Raiders appeared headed for another hangover with four turnovers, including three in a five-snap span in the second half, against a team that had only a dozen takeaways coming in.

“Funny about that, is right before that drive, I went to coach and said, ‘Hey, we’re going to win this game. So get your 2-point play ready,’” Carr recounted. “Of course, every memory of Shelby Harris came into mind, him batting the ball down. Shout out Shelby, hope he feels better.”

But Gruden’s mind was racing when Jacobs scored the touchdown and he kept changing the call.

“It may have looked more panicked than it was, because we knew what play we were running and we knew what we were about to do,” Carr said. “Then they called timeout and gave us time to really get set. It was nice. it was nice — same area. You couldn’t draw it up better.”

“First, we didn’t know the call,” Jacobs said. “We didn’t know the personnel. We had people running back in off the field. When they called timeout, they really kind of helped us with that. We would’ve been scrambling.”

Fangio said he called timeout because “we just wanted to make sure that we knew exactly who they had in there and how we wanted to play it. ... I would like to have saved it, obviously, but the game” was on the line.

“There were some holes in their protection,” Crosby said. “Some of their linemen are a little bit lazy on their protection. I’m not going to single anybody out, but you could definitely see it if you watched the film.”

HAYS – The Fort Hays State Tiger women led by 12 twice in
the first quarter but a late field goal lifted the Emporia State women to a 62-61
win Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.

The Tigers (5-1, 5-1 MIAA) got out to a quick start,
building a 12-point lead twice in the first quarter, the final time at 17-5, with just over three minutes to play in the first quarter.

After the rough start Emporia State (3-1, 3-1 MIAA) settled in and finished
the quarter and opened the second quarter on a 12-0 run tying the game at 17. After
the game was tied again at 19, the Tigers scored seven straight, including a Jaden
Hobbs three-pointer as the Tigers retook the 26-19 lead. 

The Hornets were able to chip away at the lead and took the
lead with just over one minute to play in the half before leading 33-30 at the
break. Emporia State outscored the Tigers 21-13 in the second quarter.

In the third quarter the Tigers closed the gap to two points
only to see the Hornets put together a 12-4 run and build their largest lead of
the game at nine. They lead by four, at 48-44 through three quarters.

In the fourth quarter the Tigers cut the deficit to three
with just under seven and a half minutes to play but the Hornets extended their
lead to nine once again, this time with just over four and a half minutes to
play.

Down 60-51 the Tigers got back-to-back field goals from
Sydney Golladay that sparked a 10-0 run that gave the Tigers the lead on a
Hobbs jumper with 1:11 left.

The Hornets retook the lead with just 21 second left when
Karsen Schultz pulled down an offensive rebound and got the put back putting
the Hornets up 62-61.

With 1.5 seconds left the Tigers got an opener jumper for
Whitney Randall off an in-bounds play but it rimmed off giving the Hornets the
one-point win.

Hobbs led four Tigers in double-figures with 16 points.
Randall added 12 and Katie Wagner 11 points.

Tre’Zure Jobe scored a game-high 22 points.

The Tigers are set to travel to Warrensburg to take on
Central Missouri on Thursday.

🏀 No. 11 Emporia State hands Tiger women first loss of the season

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - No. 22 Missouri Western shot 58-percent in the second half and ended Fort Hays State's three-game win streak with an 84-76 win Saturday at the MWSU Fieldhouse.

The Tigers (3-4, 3-4 MIAA) led by 19-18 with just under nine minutes to play in the first half, but the Griffons used an 18-4 run over the next four minutes to take control.

After building a 10-point lead at the half, MWSU (6-1, 6-1 MIAA) outscored the Tigers 18-4 to open the second half to build the lead to 24 and would lead by as many as 25 with 6:57 to play.

The Tigers pulled within 15 with a little over five minutes to play but five straight by the Griffons ended any chance of a comeback. FHSU did score the final 11 points and have now played in 12 straight games decidecd by 10 points or less.

FHSU had five players score in double-figures, led by Kaleb Hammeke's 18 points.

Hammeke finished 7-of-15 from the field and went 3-of-4 at the free-throw line. Jared Vitztum&nbsp;produced his fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and a team-best 12 rebounds. Quinten Rock&nbsp;also had 14 points, Jonsson finished with a new career-high 12 points, and Peters chipped in 11 points off the bench. FHSU had another strong day at the free-throw line, going 12-of-14 as a team (85.7 percent). Game time is set for 2 pm at MWSU Fieldhouse. Only a select few family members of FHSU players will be granted access to a strictly limited amount of tickets provided by MWSU. Access to these tickets is being handled internally by FHSU Administration with FHSU Men's Basketball team personnel. Walk-up tickets will not be sold to the general public. FHSU and Missouri Western were initially scheduled to play in St. Joseph on February 25, but playing this game on Saturday opens up rescheduling possibilities for the FHSU at Central Oklahoma game that is postponed. The FHSU women's game against Emporia State in Hays on Saturday (Jan. 2) is still on as scheduled at 2 pm, a meeting that has already endured two postponements. So, the FHSU men and women will be playing at the same time on Saturday, one on the road and one at home. The Kansas City Royals announced Tuesday that they have signed right-handed pitcher Ervin Santana to a minor league contract.

The 38-year old right-hander pitched for the Royals in 2013, winning nine games with a 3.24 ERA in 211 innings.

Santana last pitched in the big leagues in 2019, making three starts for the Chicago White Sox with a 9.45 ERA. He was an All-Star as recently as 2017, winning 16 games for the Minnesota Twins with a 3.28 ERA.

Santana has spent parts of 15 seasons in the majors, winning 149 games with a 4.09 ERA for the Angels, Royals, Braves, Twins and White Sox.

Royals sign RHP Ervin Santana to minor-league contract

He is the first wide receiver to win the award since it was established in 1998. Smith received 26 first-place votes and 114 points to finish ahead of his teammate and quarterback, Mac Jones. Jones received nine first-place votes and 67 points. They are the first teammates to finish 1-2 in the voting for AP player of the year. Smith is also the first Alabama player to win the award. Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence finished third and Florida quarterback Kyle Trask was fourth.
