KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Freshman high jumper&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5994">Alexandra Hart</a>&nbsp;earned her second MIAA Field Athlete of the Week honor after breaking her own school record last week, announced Wednesday (Feb. 17) by the league office. Hart won the high jump competition at the Ichabod Invitational Saturday (Feb. 13) in Topeka, Kan. after clearing the 5-10.5 bar on her third and final attempt. After breaking a 14-year-old record two weeks ago, the Rolla, Kan. native improved her mark by .75 inches, moving into sole possession of first place on the NCAA Division II national performance chart. The jump is also the facility record inside Washburn's Indoor Athletic Facility. She&nbsp;also posted a personal-best mark in the long jump, placing ninth with a leap of 17-5.5. Hart has competed in the high jump four time this season and has finished first each time. Fort Hays State track and field will wrap up the indoor regular season Friday (Feb. 19) at the Loper Tune-Up in Kearney, Neb. before returning to Topeka for the MIAA Indoor Championships at the end of the month (Feb. 27-28).&nbsp;&nbsp;

 The Trego girls are ranked seventh in the 2A poll with Smith Center 10th. 

The Phillipsburg girls are eighth in 3A. 

The Logan-Palco boys are eighth in 1A Division II with Northern Valley ninth and Wheatland-Grinnell 10th.

🏀 Hays High boys ranked No. 1 for fifth straight week

Hays and Abilene both canceled school due to extreme low temperatures and wind chill forecasted for Tuesday morning. The schools however decided to continue with their scheduled games on Tuesday night in Abilene

Five first half three pointers by Hays High propelled the Indians to a 20-9 halftime lead. The five three tied a season high for a game which the Indians had done three time prior. They would end the game with a season high seven made three pointers.

Abilene led 7-2 through the first three minutes of the game. The remainder of the first quarter belonged to the Indians on a 15-0 run.

Points would be hard to come by for both teams over the second and third quarters. The Indians outscored the Cowgirls 8-6 during the 16 minute span.

The Indians were never threatened in the fourth pushing their lead up to 19 and settling for a 38-22 victory.

Jersey Johnson led the Indians with 11 points. Seven different players scored for Hays.

Hays improves to 6-11 on the year. Abilene drops to 3-12.

Hays scored on their first possession and proceeded to lead through the entire first half by no less than three points. The Indians scored the first six points before Abilene made a three pointer at 6-3 over two minutes into the game. Hays closed the first quarter on a 11-4 run to grab their first double digit lead at 17-7.

Hays would push their lead to 13 twice in the second quarter and had the ball each time but never expanded the advantage. The Cowboys cut the lead down to 29-20 at halftime.

The Indians scored on the first possession of the second half and set the tone for a second half that Hays led by double figures for most of. The Indians led at the end of three quarters 42-31. Hays led by as many as 16 in the fourth quarter on their way to 59-45 victory.

The Indians lead wire to wire in moving to 17-0. Abilene drops to 8-5. Jace Linenberger led three in double figures at 23 points. Dalyn Schwarz added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Carson Kieffer dropped in 10 points. Abilene was led by Kaleb Becker's 17 points.

Hays heads back on the road Friday and resumes Western Athletic Conference play in Garden City. There will be no video stream on Hays Post per league agreement.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State sophomore wrestler Mason
Turner has been named the MIAA Wrestling Athlete of the Week, announced Tuesday
(Feb. 16) by the league office.

Turner, ranked No. 2 in the country at 125 pounds, pinned
the top-ranked wrestler in his only action last week. The Kansas City, Kan.
native won the marquee matchup of last week's dual at Nebraska-Kearney (Feb.
11) with a pin 49 seconds into the third period.

The returning All-American is now 9-1 on the season,
including five wins via pin and three tech fall victories. He leads the Tigers
in both categories and is tied for fifth in both categories in Division II.

After wrapping up the regular season last week against the
Lopers, Fort Hays State turns its attention towards the NCAA Division II Super
Region IV Championships, scheduled for Sunday, February 28 in Edmond, Okla.

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team moved up in both national polls again this week, jumping one spot to eighth in the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll and climbing two spots to 12th in the latest D2SIDA Media Poll, both released Tuesday. The Tigers remain the top-ranked MIAA program, with Nebraska-Kearney coming in 12th in the coaches poll and 14th in the media poll and Central Missouri moving to 16th in the coaches poll and 19th in the media ranks. The Tigers, Lopers and Jennies are all tied for first in the MIAA standings at 16-2 with four games remaining in the regular season. This weekend will go a long way to deciding the final standings, with UCM traveling to Kearney to play the Lopers Thursday before facing off with the Tigers inside Gross Memorial Coliseum on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. This is the third time in program history Fort Hays State&nbsp;is ranked eighth in the coaches poll. The Tigers wrapped up the 2014-15 season ranked eighth in the final WBCA poll of the year before winning a pair of home games against Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State as the eighth-ranked team in the country in January 2019 (1/24-26/19). LAWRENCE—The University of Kansas Athletic Director Jeff Long issued a statement&nbsp; Monday following the weekend DUI arrest of head baseball coach Ritch Price.

"After meeting with Coach Price this afternoon, I informed him that he has been suspended for the next two weeks from all team related activities as a result of his DUI arrest this past weekend."

"I also met with the team to inform them of this decision. While I have tremendous respect and appreciation for Coach Price and the manner in which he conducts our baseball program, as well as the leadership he provides our young men, in this instance he failed to meet our expectations. Coach Price expressed to me his sincere remorse for putting himself in that position and the negative impact it will have on the program. I am confident he will learn from this dangerous lapse in judgement and so will his current and future baseball student-athletes.”

In a separate statement, Price said, “I would like to apologize to my family, players, KU administration, alumni, coaches, staff, as well as our donors for embarrassing them, the University of Kansas, our entire athletic department and myself."

 As I shared with my team, the consequences from my actions on Saturday night could have jeopardized members of our community and was irresponsible. I have always held myself to the same high standards as those of my players and take full responsibility for my actions. I will do everything in my power to ensure that this type of behavior will never happen again. I love the University of Kansas, our athletic department and baseball program. Through my actions moving forward, I hope to regain the trust of all Jayhawks.”

Price joined the KU baseball program in 2002 and became head coach the following year. The team has won over 530 games during his time leading the Jayhawks.

Jeff Long further announces that Associate Head Coach, Ryan Graves, will serve as Head Coach during the suspension.

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - Fort Hays State overcame an early 10-point first half deficit to tie Northeastern State at halftime then used a strong second half to pull away for a 73-58 win Saturday afternoon at the NSU Event Center. 

The Tigers went 2-1 during their three-games in four-days swing through Oklahoma to move to 9-9 on the season.

After being tied at halftime, the Tigers opened the second half with an 18-9 run to build a 47-28 lead. The Tigers would build the lead to 16 then scored the final six points after the RiverHawks (2-16) closed within nine.

Quinten Rock hit four of the Tigers nine 3-pointers and led them with 19 points. He also dished out seven assists with only two turnovers.

Jared Vitztum scored the first six points of the second half and finished with his NCAA Division II-leading 10th double-double of the season, producing 14 points and 12 rebounds. After surpassing the 1,000 point mark earlier in the week, he becomes the eight player in FHSU history to score 1,000 points and have 600 rebounds in his career.&nbsp;

🏀 Strong second half carries Tiger men past RiverHawks

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Jalen Wilson scored 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for his fourth straight double-double as Kansas broke away in the final nine minutes to defeat Iowa State 64-50 on Saturday.

Iowa State led for all but the final two seconds of the first half when David McCormack hit a jumper to knot the score at 24-24. The Jayhawks scored the first six points of the second half and led the rest of the way but didn’t break open a two-possession game until Wilson made four straight free throws to begin a 10-2 run. Ochai Agbaji and Wilson hit 3-pointers and Kansas (15-7, 9-5 Big 12 Conference) suddenly led by 11 with 7:46 remaining.

Iowa State (2-14, 0-11) came within eight points twice more, but Kansas closed out the game on a 14-8 pace. The Cyclones had two turnovers and missed three shots. Iowa State’s losing skid has reached 10 straight since Jan. 2.

McCormack scored 13 points with eight rebounds, Christian Braun added 11 points, nine after halftime, and Agbaji scored six of his nine in the second half. The Jayhawks outscored Iowa State 40-26 after halftime.

Jalen Coleman-Lands led the Cyclones with 20 points, including three 3-pointers, and Rasir Bolton added 13 points, making 7 of 8 at the free throw line. Jaden Walker grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds, the most by a Cyclone since Michael Jacobson had 16 in 2019.

KU set the NCAA Division I record for consecutive weeks of being ranked at 231, a streak which ran from Feb. 2, 2009 to Feb. 1. Since falling out of the Top 25, the Jayhawks have won four of five, falling only to No. 17 West Virginia.

Both teams had rugged shooting performances — Kansas at 36% and Iowa State 38%. But in the pivotal second half, Kansas was 14 of 32 for 44% while the Cyclones went 8-for-25 with eight turnovers.

Iowa State turned the ball over 23 times in the game with Kansas scoring 16 points off the miscues. The Jayhawks dominated the paint 26-12 and had 15 assists on 24 baskets.

Kansas plays at Kansas State on Wednesday, having defeated the Wildcats on Feb. 2. Iowa State is next at No. 23 Oklahoma State on Tuesday.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Cade Cunningham’s great moments helped Oklahoma State pull through against Kansas State.

Cunningham, the freshman guard who leads the Big 12 Conference in scoring, had 15 points to help the 23rd-ranked Cowboys defeat the Wildcats 67-60 on Saturday.

Rondel Walker scored 10 points in his first start of the season and Bryce Williams added 10 for the Cowboys (13-6, 6-6 Big 12).

Temperatures that hovered around 10 degrees Fahrenheit (minus-12 Celsius) made for a sparse crowd, but Cunningham rewarded those who showed up. From halfcourt, he hit a streaking Williams with a perfect bounce pass between two Kansas State defenders. Williams finished with a layup to give the Cowboys a 19-12 lead.

Minutes later, Oklahoma State got loose on a fast break, and Walker lobbed to Cunningham, whose&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/OSUMBB/status/1360645802931200006" target="_blank">throwdown over Kansas State’s Rudi Williams gave Oklahoma State a 24-14 edge.</a>

“I know it’s probably already on Twitter somewhere,” Walker said.

Those plays sparked the Cowboys and helped them take a 35-19 lead at the break. Oklahoma State held Kansas State to 25% shooting in the first half.

“I thought our defensive focus to start the game was excellent, and it carried us on to victory today,” Cowboys coach Mike Boynton said.

Kansas State made a push early in the second half. A 3-pointer by Pack cut Oklahoma State’s lead to 41-35, and a dunk by Kaosi Ezeagu made it a four-point game.

Cunningham answered with a 3-pointer to spark a 7-2 run that put the Cowboys back in control.

Boynton said he was glad to see his team fight through the run to achieve its goal.

“It’s kind of the dog days,” Boynton said. “Postseason is still a little ways away, but there’s still enough games that you’ve got to have the right to focus on to win.”

Kansas State coach Bruce Weber said the Wildcats didn’t have much left after an 80-77 loss to No. 13 Texas on Tuesday.

“We came back Thursday and Friday and just did not have good practices,” Weber said. “It was the first time maybe in — I don’t even know when, to be honest — maybe way back early — that we didn’t have energy that we needed and emotion that we needed to prepare.”

Weber said his players continue to hang tough, despite not getting favorable results.

“It wasn’t that they didn’t try,” Weber said. “They just had no energy. They had no emotion. Maybe just those games, those hard-fought games — it finally took a toll on our guys.”

Kansas State: The Wildcats had the close call against Texas and outscored Oklahoma State 41-32 in the second half on Saturday. They are showing signs of improvement.

Oklahoma State: The Cowboys were dominant defensively in the first half, but they allowed the Wildcats to shoot 55% after the break. Oklahoma State will need to close better to make noise in March.

Oklahoma State’s Kalib Boone had another strong rebounding performance on Saturday.

The 6-foot-9 sophomore had nine rebounds, the third time in his past five games that he’s had at least that many. His rebounding average over that five-game stretch is 8.6.

Isaac Likekele, Oklahoma State’s second-leading scorer, sat out with a foot injury.

Walker stepped into the starting lineup and had 10 points and six rebounds.

“I just felt like it was another day,” Walker said. “Really was no different. My job was today was to come in and give a spark immediately instead of off the bench.”

🏀 Cunningham’s 15 lead No. 23 Oklahoma St. past Kansas St.

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - The ninth-ranked Fort Hays State women overcame an early injury to Cydney Bergman and red-hot 3-point shooting by Northeastern State to beat the RiverHawks 70-58 Saturday afternoon at the NSU Event Center.

The Tigers 16-2, 16-2 MIAA) have won 11 straight and remain tied with Central Missouri and Nebraska-Kearney atop the MIAA standings.

Bergman went down on the first possession of the game and would not return and the Tigers quickly fell behind after three straight 3-pointers from NSU's Cenia Hayes.

The Tigers pulled within a point at the end the first quarter and outscored the RiverHawks 18-12 in the second quarter for a 34-29 lead.

FHSU pushed the lead to 13 late in the third quarter and led by 14 following a Madison Mittie 3-pointer on an inbound play with two seconds on the shot clock.

NSU would use an 11-2 run to close within five points with just under five to play the Tigers used an 11-2 run of their own to push the lead back to 14 with a little over a minute to play.

Jaden Hobbs led three Tigers in double-figures with 17 points. Katie Wagner added 14 points and Whitney Randall 13. Olivia Holenbeck added nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Cenia Hayes hit five 3-pointers and led the RiverHawks with 12 points. Morgan Lee went 5-for-5 from the floor with four threes and added 16.

🏀📻 No. 9 Tiger women wrap up Oklahoma road swing at Notheastern State

PHILLIPSBURG – The TMP-Marian Monarchs earned a doubleheader sweep of the
Phillipsburg Panthers Friday night in Phillipsburg.

The TMP Lady Monarchs (14-3, 8-1 MCL) used a 16-4 run to end
the first half and open the third quarter on their way to a 44-32 upset win
over the fourth ranked Panthers.

TMP’s Emilee Lane gave the Monarchs a 2-0 lead only to see
Phillipsburg go on a 6-0 run to take a 6-2 lead. TMP finished the first quarter
on a 6-0 run of their own to take an 8-6 lead.

In a low scoring second quarter TMP extended their lead to four
two different times on a Kassdi Yost field goal and again with a Jaci VonLintel
field goal at the end of the first half. TMP led 14-10 at the break.

TMP opened the second half on a 10-2 run doubling up
Phillipsburg 24-12. The Monarchs led by 11 through three quarters at 28-17.

With TMP leading 33-21 in the final period Sophia Balthazor and
Megan Hamel combined to score seven straight putting TMP up 19, 40-21.

Phillipsburg (13-2, 8-1 MCL) was able to briefly cut the deficit
to 11 but the Monarchs was able to secure the 44-32 win.

Megan Hamel scored all 12 of her points in the second half
to lead the way for TMP. Jaci VonLintel added nine points and Kassidi Yost chipped
in six points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

The TMP boys used a 17-0 second run to build a first-half double-digit
lead and then held off a late Phillipsburg rally on their way to the 57-44 win.

Phillipsburg opened the game with back-to-back three
pointers and led TMP (14-4, 8-1 MCL) 6-2.

The Monarchs Dylan Werth scored the first four points for
TMP and Gavin Unrein scored the next four but TMP still trailed 14-8 through one
quarter of action.

Jackson Schulte scored 13 second quarter points sparking a
17-0 run to open the second quarter as they built a 25-14 lead. TMP led 27-20
at the break.

It was much the second in the third quarter for TMP as they
outscored Phillipsburg 20-5 in the third quarter. Werth scored 10 of his game-high
25 points in the third quarter.

Phillipsburg (7-9, 4-5 MCL) outscored TMP 19-10 in the
fourth quarter but the Monarchs held on for the 57-44 win.

Dylan Werth scored a career-high for TMP while Jackson
Schulte added 22.

The Monarchs travel to Great Bend on Tuesday.

Hays High went on the road Friday to Colby following a week long break from competition. The Indians had played three game prior in Colby earlier in the season during the Orange &amp; Black Classic.

Hays led by eleven midway through the second quarter and had the ball but couldn't expand their advantage. The Indians led Colby by eight midway through the third quarter and had the ball but didn't score. Colby overcame an 0-12 start from the field to beat Hays 42-31.

The Indians' third quarter lead at 25-17 came on a Jersey Johnson three pointer with 4:10 showing on the clock. Hays got a stop and had the ball with the chance to regain a double digit advantage but turned the ball over. Colby closed the final 10:20 on a 25-6 run.

Colby tied the game at 25 in the final minute of the third quarter before the Indians regained the lead 27-25 on the first possession of the fourth quarter. It would be their last lead.&nbsp;

Colby went on a 17-4 run to close the game, winning 42-31.

Hays shot 42% in the first half but just 21% in the second half. Colby was 28% from the floor in half number one but 50% in the second.

Hays falls to 4-11 on the year. Colby breaks a three game skid and is 9-8 on the year.

Hays shot 63% in the first half but couldn't shake Colby through the first sixteen minutes of play. Colby took an early 5-2 lead before an 18-8 run build the Indians a lead at 20-13. Colby tied the game up at 23 midway through the second quarter before a 10-3 run once again established a seven point lead for Hays. Each time the Indians led by seven they possessed the basketball but turned it over on both occasions. Colby buried a three with five seconds left before halftime cutting the Indian lead down to 33-29.

Much like the last three games, Hays dominated the second half. This time a 40-11 half propelled the Indians to a 73-40 victory. Hays beat Colby previously 56-47. Hays outscored Colby 18-6 in the third quarter and 22-5 in the fourth. They set a season high with 32 made field goals.

Ten different Indians scored led by the 17 of Dalyn Schwarz led the way with 17. TJ Nunnery scored 13 for a third straight game as Hays improves to 16-0 on the year. Colby has lost seven in a row, a streak started with a loss to Hays in January, and are now 6-11.

Hays is on the road to #10-4A Abilene on Tuesday.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Ochai Agbaji scored 19 points with five 3-pointers, Christian Braun had 18 points, five rebounds and six assists, and Kansas cruised past Iowa State 97-64 for its second straight victory since getting left off the Top-25 poll earlier this week. 

On Monday, Kansas dropped out of The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll for the first time in 12 years, ending a record streak of 231 consecutive weeks ranked. Later that night, Kansas forced No. 23 Oklahoma State into 19 turnovers to roll to a 78-66 victory. 

Kansas led for all of 25 seconds in this one. Jalen Wilson had a double-double for the third straight game, scoring 16 points with 11 rebounds for Kansas. 

Jalen Coleman-Lands scored 20 points for Iowa State.

&nbsp; KEARNEY, Neb. – The 17th-ranked Fort Hays State wrestling team could not overcome the second-ranked Lopers of Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday (Feb. 11), falling 35-12 in the regular season finale. The ranked duo of No. 2&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5806">Mason Turner</a>&nbsp;and No. 8&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5790">A.J. Cooper</a>&nbsp;bookmarked the dual with pins at 125 and 285 pounds, but the Lopers came away with wins in the eight remaining bouts. The Tigers finish their regular season at 3-7, 2-1 in conference action while the Lopers end their year at 10-3, 3-0 in the MIAA. &nbsp; This dual started with two of the&nbsp;best in the nation at 125 pounds. After a couple tough periods, No. 1 Josh Portillo and No. 2 Turner were even in scoring headed to the final frame after trading reversals in the second period. After electing for the neutral position to start the third period, Turner gained the advantage with a takedown before turning&nbsp;Portillo on his back, securing the fall&nbsp;49 seconds in the third period. 🤼No. 17 Wrestling Drops Regular Season Finale to Second-Ranked Lopers

Emporia Public Schools recently announced Keaton Tuttle as the next head football
coach for Emporia High School. Tuttle, who has been with the Emporia High football
program for the past five seasons as the offensive line coach, had been named the
interim head coach in October of 2020. Currently, Tuttle is in his sixth year of teaching
and is a Technology Education teacher at Emporia High School.


Tuttle, originally from Iowa, played collegiately at Iowa Western Community College
before receiving a scholarship to play in Kansas in the MIAA at Fort Hays State
University. Upon graduating from FHSU, Tuttle accepted a teaching job at EHS and
has made Emporia his home ever since. Tuttle brings a wealth of knowledge and is
well respected in the coaching community. “​I'm very thankful for the opportunity to
continue to build upon what we have started here at Emporia High. It is a great chance
to combine a lot of things I'm very passionate about, the Emporia community, our
schools, football, and a family atmosphere,” Tuttle said. “Being a positive role model for
young students and athletes is very important to me. I have called Emporia home for 6
years, and I could not see myself anywhere else. Lastly, I would like to thank my
parents, family, administration, friends, and coaches. Especially those who believed in
me and helped shape me into the man I am today."

Curtis Simons, assistant principal/athletic director at EHS said, “We are excited to offer
Keaton the opportunity to be the head coach of our football program. He is familiar with
our student-athletes and has been a part of the program for the past five seasons. We
sincerely appreciate his time as the interim head coach and look forward to watching
him grow and continue his success as the head coach.”


The Board of Education and USD 253 Administration value our student-athletes and
want to express continued support for Emporia High Football as the program begins this
new chapter.
