The Lopers fell to the same two opponents as the Tigers during the first week of the season – Emporia State and Washburn. However, UNK lost those games by an average of 11.5 points, compared to the pair of two-point losses by FHSU. Day two of the round robin Hays City Shootout opened with TMP and Hugoton take the floor in the first two games. #6-3A Hugoton girls beat TMP 51-33 to move to 2-0 on the year. TMP dropped to 1-1. The TMP boys moved to 2-0 with a 62-59 win over Hugoton. Hugoton fell to 0-2.

Hays High was outscored 19-3 in the fourth quarter after heading into the final frame tied at 27 with Life Prep Academy on Friday night. The Indians turned the ball over on five of their first six possessions of in the game and fell behind 9-0.&nbsp;

Once Hays found their offense they went on a 16-2 run deep into the second quarter and led 23-19 at halftime. The Indians advantage reached a peak of seven at 23-16. However Hays would not score for the next 9:10. Life Prep during that timeframe went on a 11-0 run of their own to grab a four point lead before the fourth quarter.

The two teams combined for 75 turnovers. Hays ended the game with 39 and Life Prep 36. Hays falls to 0-2 on the year. Life Prep is now 2-1.

Hays led wire to wire in their second game of the year moving to 2-0 at the Hays City Shootout beating Life Prep Academy 71-39. The Indians used runs of 15-3, 13-0 and 17-0 in their victory.&nbsp;

The game was never closer than 6-5 just over midway through the first quarter. It was at that point that the Indians started the 15-3 run for a 21-8 advantage. The game was a single digit affair only one more time at 23-15.&nbsp;

Hays shot 52% for the game backing up their 53% on Thursday night. The Indians made seven of their twelve three pointers. Jace Linenberger and Carson Kieffer each scored 16 to lead the way. Ten players scored in the game for Hays High who moves to 2-0 on the year. Life Prep Academy falls to 1-2 on the year and 0-2 in the tourney.

Hays boys win; girls lose in Day 2 of Shootout

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs boys picked up their second
straight win over the season while the Monarch girls suffered their first loss
of the year Friday afternoon on the second day of the Hays City Shootout.

The TMP-Marian Monarch girls opened the game with a Megan Hamel
three pointer to take a 3-0 lead. But Hugoton answered that with a 15-2 run to
build a 15-5 first quarter lead.

TMP was able to cut the deficit to five points with a Kyleigh
Allen three-point play and a Jaci VonLintel field goal bringing TMP back 15-10
but a three-pointer by Hugoton gave them an eight-point lead after the first
quarter.

The Monarchs were able to cut the deficit back to six points
two different times to open the second quarter only to see the Eagles go on a
six nothing run to build a 12-point lead at 26-14. Hugoton led by 15 at the break.

TMP was able to close within 11 in the third quarter but couldn’t
get any closer in the second half as Hugoton went on to the 51-33 win.

Meagan Hamel scored a team-high 10 points and Emilee Lane
added eight-points and seven rebounds.

The TMP boys rallied from down 12 points in the third quarter
on their way to a 62-59 win over Hugoton Friday.

TMP jumped out to an early 7-4 lead with Jackson Schulte
scored five of the first seven points. Hugoton answered the TMP run with a 11-3
first-quarter run of their own as they built a 15-10 lead. The Eagles led 17-15
after one quarter.

A pair of Bryce Seib free throws tied the game at 17 to open
the second quarter but Hugoton had another answer. This time they put together
a 12-4 run to lead 29-21.

The Monarchs was able to close within one with four straight
from Schulte and a three-point play from Lucas Lang.

But with the Hugoton lead down to just one at 29-28 the Eagles
strung together a 10-0 lead to end the third quarter and led 39-28 through
three quarters.

They extended the run to 13-2 to open the fourth quarter and
took their largest lead of the game at 12 at 42-30.

TMP trimmed to lead to single digits late in the third quarter
and a Schulte three just before the buzzer capped off a 9-2 run closing the
score to 47-45 Hugoton with one quarter to play.

In the final frame the Monarchs took control, they built a
55-50 lead midway through the fourth thanks to a 13-3 run.

&nbsp;Hugoton erased the
deficit and took the lead on a three-pointer with under a minute to play but
Jace Wentling broke free for a layup putting TMP up 60-59 with 28 second
remaining.

Gavin Unrein added a pair of free throws with 7.9 second to
go giving TMP a 62-59 lead. All eight of Unrein’s points came in the fourth
quarter.

Hugoton get a good look at a three-pointer as time expired
but it was off the mark as the Monarchs rallied for the 62-59 win.

Schulte led all scorers with 24 in the game. Bryce Seib
added nine for TMP.

The Monarchs are 2-0 and both the boys and girls teams will
take on Hays High Saturday in the final day of the Hays City Shootout.

The 38th annual Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout had a different look on Thursday. COVID-19 caused some teams to be unable to attend as their season hadn't even started yet.&nbsp;

Hays, Thomas More Prep-Marian, Hugoton and Life Prep Academy made up the four team field in 2020. The format was held round robin with each team playing the other over three days.

Fans were also absent from the gymnasium as KSHSAA had voted the week prior to not allow any non-participants at winter contests until at least January 28, 2021.&nbsp;

The TMP Lady Monarchs opened the tourney with a 37-33 win over Life Prep. The TMP boys picked up a 70-55 victory over Life Prep

Scoring would come tough for the Indians through out the night for Hays as they tallied just single digit points in each quarter. The Indians led 2-0 and kept Hugoton scoreless for the first three minutes then fell behind 8-2. A 6-0 run tied the game at eight heading into the second quarter and then was tied at eleven two minutes later.

The Eagles embarked on what turned out to be a decisive 10-4 run that gave Hugoton a 21-15 lead at halftime.

Down 23-17 just over a minute into the third quarter Hays could not score on their next seven possessions with three missed field goals and four turnovers while holding Hugoton scoreless.&nbsp;

Eventually Mikyn Hamlin, who averaged 16 points as a freshman, found her stroke scoring nine of her game high 20 points helping Hugoton to a 33-20 lead after three quarters and a 47-26 victory.

Morgan Engle scored a team high ten in her first career game for the Indians. Mikyn Hamlin scored 20 and Summya Adigun added 11 for Hugoton.

Hays opens the year 0-1. Hugoton improves to 1-0.&nbsp;

Hays used an 18-0 run in the first quarter to blow open a 2-2 tie on their way to a 77-55 win over Hugoton. The Indians ballooned their lead up to 23 during the second quarter going into the locker room leading 42-19.&nbsp;

Dalyn Schwartz and Jace Linenberger hit double figures by halftime for the Indians.

The lead hovered around 20 for most of the third quarter and as high as 24 at 60-36 with thirty seconds left in the frame. That is when Hugoton started their best run of the game.

Powered by nine straight points from the free throw line the Eagles went on a 15-2 run getting within eleven at 62-51. The Eagle had the ball at that score but a three pointer was tipped and the Indians turned the rebound into the beginning of a 15-4 run to finish the game.&nbsp;

Hays was led by Linenberger who tied a career high of 21. Schwartz ended the night with a career high 20 and tied a career high 13 rebounds for his fourth career double-double. Carson Kieffer scored 14 on the strength of four three pointers.

Hays improves to 1-0. Hugoton starts the year at 0-1.

🏀 HHS boys win, girls lose in Shootout opener

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs basketball teams opened up
the season with a pair of wins over the Fire from Life Prep Academy.

In the first game of the day TMP fell behind early but
Emilee Lane scored eight of her game-high 18 in the first quarter to help the
Monarchs build an 8-5 lead.

The Fire briefly tied the game at eight in the second
quarter before Lane and Sophia Balthazor combined to scored seven in-a-row as
the Monarchs built their largest lead of the game at 15-8. Life Prep scored the
next nine and lead 17-15 at the halftime break.

TMP was again able to take the lead out of the quarter
break, this time scored six straight to lead 21-17. The Fire briefly took a
one-point lead before Lane game TMP the 23-22 lead through three quarters.

Trailed 24-23 to open the fourth quarter TMP- Jaci VonLintel
scored four straight at the free throw line to put TMP up 27-24.

Down one Lane gave TMP the lead at 31-30 with less than 40
second left and the Monarchs hit enough free throws down the stretch to clinch
the 37-33 win.

Lane finished with a game-high 18 points and eight rebounds.

TMP Jackson Schulte led all scorers with 32 points and Dylan
Werth added a career-high 20 as the Monarchs downed Life Prep 70-55 Thursday.

TMP opened the game with a pair of three-points and led 6-2
only to see the two teams trade leads in the first quarter with the Fire taking
a 12-10 lead after one quarter.

The back-and-forth action continued into the second quarter
with the Fire leading by as much as three before Werth scored back-to-back
buckets to put TMP up 25-24.

A Jace Wentling three-point play gave TMP a 28-27 lead late
in the second quarter but the Fire got another bucket late in the quarter to
take a 29-28 lead into the break.

In the second half TMP outscored the Fire 15-2 to open the third
quarter as they built a 43-31 lead. During that stretch Schulte hit
back-to-back three pointers and added a three-point play. Kenton Ginther added
a three off the bench as the Monarchs led 46-33 through three quarters.

In the fourth quarter TMP led by as man as 18. The Fire were
able to close the gap to 11 but Lucas Lang hit his second three of the game
giving TMP a 62-48 lead. The Monarchs went onto pick up the 70-55 win.

🏀TMP opens the season with wins over Life Prep

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Bryce Thompson remembers watching the annual “Late Night” festivities that kick off every basketball season at Kansas, and how the students and fans packed Allen Fieldhouse to the rafters to watch a glorified practice.

He never anticipated his first game in the Phog would be played with a couple hundred people in the stands.

The talented freshman must have found some energy on his own, though. Thompson scored 11 points to complement big nights from David McCormack, Ochai Agbaji and Jalen Wilson, helping the seventh-ranked Jayhawks cruise to an 89-54 victory over lower-division Washburn on Thursday night in their long-awaited home opener.

“It was definitely different. Not what I was used to,” Thompson said. “I came to ‘Late Night’ and saw all the fans, and it was a little different. But I just had to get used to it, catch a rhythm and build some energy from my teammates.”

McCormack scored 17 points, Agbaji added 16 points and Wilson had 12 as the Jayhawks shot 52.5% from the field.

Kansas (3-1) had opened with a pair of games in Florida and beat Kentucky in Indianapolis before returning to the friendly Phog. But their first game played in the old barn since the COVID-19 pandemic started lacked much of the atmosphere that has made the building one of the toughest — and most hallowed — in all of college basketball.

Players sat apart from each other, like they have at other venues, and the recent surge in positive cases forced school officials to limit attendance to a couple hundred staff and family members. Even the pregame montage on the video boards and the haunting chants of “Rock Chalk” that so often disquiet opponents were somewhat muted.

“I don’t know if you can say it doesn’t feel weird,” McCormack said. “We’ve definitely accommodated to it, but playing a game your whole life and having fans cheering you to not having them at all, or lessened — it’s going to feel weird.”

Jayhawks coach Bill Self was a little more succinct.

“I thought that it was not great, by any stretch,” he said. “But the atmosphere here was 10 times better than what it was in Indy. In Indy, there was none at all. At least we had some cutouts and a few people in here. But it’s not the same.”

The practice-like atmosphere might be why Washburn (3-1), coached by former Jayhawks guard and Self assistant Brett Ballard, wasn’t rattled in the first half. Levi Braun hit a trio of early 3-points, Jonny Clausing bulled his way to a couple easy baskets, and the Ichabods managed to hang within 27-22 at the under-8 timeout of the first half.

McCormack and Wilson began to be too much, though.

McCormack, a junior forward, was 5 of 6 from the field on his way to 13 first-half points, and Wilson drilled three 3s and had 12 points as Kansas used a late run to stretch its lead to 49-32 heading into the locker room.

Both teams were sloppy to start the second half, each errant pass resulting in coaching from the sideline that seemed to echo off the walls. But the Jayhawks eventually began to pull away with Agbaji starting a big run that pushed the lead to 61-34, allowing Self’s bunch to cruise to their 48th consecutive home-opening win.

Braun and Tyler Geiman led the Ichabods with nine points apiece. Clausing finished with eight.

“I think there’s some positives from this. I thought we scrapped and competed in spurts,” Ballard said. “As a whole, I wasn’t overly satisfied. I thought we could play a little tougher and our compete wasn’t where I’d like it.”

Kansas announced before tipoff that fans would return in limited amounts Tuesday night against No. 9 Creighton, continuing through games against Omaha on Dec. 11 and Tarleton State two days later. The football coach at the center of the death of a 19-year-old player
 at Garden City Community College in 2018 was fired Wednesday 
from his new job at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin.

"Jeff Sims, head football coach, has been relieved of his duties," Director of Athletics Jared Bruggeman said in a statement.

Sims
 was 2-9 with the Lions in 2019, and games this year were postponed due 
to the pandemic. He still had two years left on his contract. But the 
university refuses to say whether Sims was fired for cause or without 
cause. If MSSU decided to just release Sims, the school would owe him 
$90,000, according to the contract he signed in November 2018. But, if 
he was fired for cause, the university would not owe him.

When 
KCUR asked if Sims would be paid, MSSU Director of News Services &amp; 
Messaging, Mike Olmstead, responded with a statement that read, in part,
 "The details of him being relieved of his duties cannot be discussed as
 they represent an ongoing personnel situation." 

Olmstead did not elaborate on why Sims' firing is an "ongoing personnel situation."

Braeden Bradforth, the teenager from Neptune, New Jersey, died of exertional heatstroke <a href="https://www.kcur.org/news/2019-02-17/monday-in-jersey-tuesday-in-garden-city-wednesday-dead-after-a-football-practice-in-kansas" target="_blank">after a grueling Sims-led workout on a hot August day in Garden City. </a>An investigation paid for by GCCC a year after Bradforth's death blamed <a href="https://www.kcur.org/news/2019-11-14/investigation-into-kansas-football-players-death-blames-the-coach-athletic-director" target="_blank"> "a striking lack of leadership" by top college officials, including Sims.</a>

Earlier
 this year the family settled with the college for $500,000, the maximum
 allowed under Kansas law because Sims and other GCCC officials were 
protected by qualified immunity.

"We may never know whether 
Braeden’s death played a role in Missouri Southern‘s decision to end 
their relationship with Sims," said family lawyer Jill Greene. "But one 
can only hope that it was a factor."

Sims seemed confused by his firing. KEARNEY, Neb. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball game at Nebraska-Kearney this Saturday has been postponed due to COVID-19 protocols and will me made up at a later date to be announced.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Royals announced tonight that they will not tender a Major League contract to infielders&nbsp;Maikel Franco&nbsp;and&nbsp;Jeison Guzman, infielder/outfielder&nbsp;Erick Mejia&nbsp;and outfielder&nbsp;Bubba Starling. Left-handed pitcher&nbsp;Foster Griffin&nbsp;and right-handed pitcher&nbsp;Carlos Sanabria, who were designated for assignment earlier this week, will also not be tendered Major League contracts.

The Royals announced today that they did agree to terms with infielder/outfielder&nbsp;Hunter Dozier&nbsp;and outfielder/designated hitter&nbsp;Jorge Soler. Yesterday, the Royals announced that they agreed to terms with outfielder&nbsp;Franchy Cordero&nbsp;and right-handed pitchers&nbsp;Jesse Hahn&nbsp;and&nbsp;Jakob Junis.

Franco, 28, started in all 60 games in 2020 and recorded his highest batting average (.278), on-base percentage (.321) and slugging percentage (.457) since 2015 with Philadelphia. He tied for third in the American League with 16 doubles and led the Royals with 38 RBI, which put him on a pace for 103 RBI over a 162-game season.

Guzman, 22, spent most of the 2020 season at the Royals’ Alternate Training Site. He was recalled for three days in August, but did not appear in a game. Guzman was selected to the 40-man roster in November of 2019, after being named Lexington’s Player of the Year that season.

Mejia, 26, made the Royals’ Opening Day roster for the first time in 2020 and played in eight games, including stints from July 24-Aug. 6 and Sept. 16-23.

Starling, 28, made the Royals’ Opening Day roster for the first time in 2020 and played in 35 games. He had two stints on the Injured List from Aug. 5-14 and Sept. 23 through season’s end. Starling was the Royals’ first-round pick (5th&nbsp;overall) in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft.

Dozier, 29, missed the first 16 games of the 2020 season, but started in each of the Royals’ last 44 games and did not commit an error while playing at first base (24 games), right field (18) and left field (2). Despite not making his season debut until Aug. 9, Dozier led the club with 27 walks, which tied for fifth most in the American League from his first game through season’s end. He also ranked third among Royals with 29 runs scored.

Soler, 28, was limited to 43 games in 2020 due to two stints on the Injured List. The first stint snapped his consecutive games played streak at 199, which was the third-longest active run in the Majors at the time, according to&nbsp;Elias. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Kansas forward Jalen Wilson waited a whole year for a night like Tuesday.

His celebration came in almost total silence.

Wilson scored 21 of his career-high 23 points in the second half, made the first two 3-pointers of his career during the key stretch and posted his first double-double to help No. 7 Kansas get past No. 20 Kentucky 65-62 in the Champions Classic.

“My team needed me to step up even though I had a slow first half, and the second half turned out to be a really good half,” the redshirt freshman said. “I always practice those (3-point) shots. I have confidence in me, my team has confidence in me and it felt really good.”

And the Jayhawks (2-1) needed everything Wilson could muster in an ugly, disjointed game.

Wilson was 8 of 16 from the field — the only player on either team with a shooting percentage of 50% or better. He had a season-best 10 rebounds. Ochai Agbaji added 17 points for Kansas, and Christian Braun had eight points and 13 rebounds.

Kentucky (1-2) was led by Brandon Boston Jr. and Davion Mintz, who each scored 12. Mintz had a chance to tie it with five seconds to go but his 3-pointer was off the mark and Kansas grabbed the rebound.

“They’ve got to go through this, it’s all part of the growth of this,” Kentucky coach John Calipari said. “They punked us. We couldn’t even bring in the ball.”

What was supposed to be one of this season’s showcase games between college basketball’s two winningest programs devolved quickly into sloppy play, full of turnovers, missed shots and blown opportunities. With no fans or even cardboard cutouts, and the only noise being piped-in music during timeouts, the lack of intensity was palpable throughout the game.

“It didn’t have the feel at all of a game,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “It had the feel of a scrimmage.”

Kansas shot 30% from the field and missed three of four free throws during one stretch in the final minute when it could have sealed the win.

Kentucky shot 36% but blew an early double-digit lead and gave away a 35-29 halftime edge when the Jayhawks started the second half on a 10-3 run to grab a 39-38 lead with 12:46 left.

But the offensive woes prevented either team from taking control until Agbaji broke a 55-all tie with a rare 3-pointer at the 2:43 mark. His dunk on the next possession finally gave Kansas some breathing room and Kentucky never recovered.

Kentucky: After last weekend’s surprising home loss to Richmond, the Wildcats needed to get back on track. It looked as though they might for a half. But even a win Sunday against Georgia Tech in Atlanta might not be enough to keep them in the Top 25 after this game.

Kansas: The Jayhawks scored 184 points in their first two games — but you wouldn’t have known it by the way they shot the ball Tuesday. Kansas missed 13 of its first 15 attempts and scored just five points in the first 10 minutes. Somehow, though, they head home on a two-game winning streak with a chance to make it four straight before facing No. 9 Creighton.

Kansas guard Marcus Garrett played 35 minutes despite feeling ill the last four days.

Self said Garrett was suffering from headaches, was bothered by bright lights, had an upset stomach and was struggling to catch his breath. While Self said Garrett was given PCR tests for COVID-19 on Friday and Tuesday and both came back negative, the coach didn’t expect Garrett to suit up and even explained he didn’t need to play.

“Hopefully we’ll get him back, get him to the doctors and figure out what’s going on, get him on the right meds and get him better,” Self said.

“It was embarrassing, but that’s what we need to learn,” Calipari said of missing the rebound in the final minute. “Olivier (Sarr)? A breakout, you’re going to foul? What? It’s not football, it’s not a touchdown. Let him shoot a layup, we’ll score in three seconds.”
