HAYS, Kan. – Betsy Parmlay's two-run walkoff single lifted the Fort Hays State softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Northwest Missouri State Saturday at Tiger Stadium. The Tigers held on to win the opener 3-2 then rallied to take the second game 5-4.

The Tigers improved to 18-16 overall and 11-5 in the MIAA. The Bearcats slipped to 13-17 overall and 7-11 in the MIAA.&nbsp; Game 1: Fort Hays State 3, Northwest Missouri State 2 Fort Hays State took an early 2-0 lead in the opener when Loren Beggs took advantage of the north wind and drove a ball high into the air in right field for a two-run triple. The Bearcats opened the third with a double, triple and single and tied the game 2-2. Tiger starter Michaelanne Nelson&nbsp;stopped any further damage with a pair of strikeouts to end the inning. The Tigers grabbed the lead back in the bottom of the inning when Jessica Espinoza&nbsp;drove home the decisive run of the game with a single up the middle. Nelson shut the Bearcats down the rest of the way, never allowing a runner further than first base the remainder of the game. She finished with eight strikeouts in another complete game effort, allowing seven hits with a walk.

Breck Dickey also pitched a complete game for the Bearcats, allowing seven hits and four walks. She struck out two. Game 2: Fort Hays State 5, Northwest Missouri State 4 Trailing 4-3, the Tigers loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and won it on Betsy Pamley, two-run single to right field. The Bearcats scored a run in the third&nbsp; and two in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead.&nbsp; Northwest starting pitcher Raven Defrain helped her own cause with an RBI single in the third, then Jacee Winn drove home a run in the fourth. The Bearcats picked up an extra run on a throwing error. The Tigers mounted a rally against Defrain in the fourth when Loren Beggs and Jessic Espinoza goth singles then moved up a base on a passed ball. Kristen Reed drove home the first Tiger run on a sacrifice fly. Elise Capra came through with a pinch-hit RBI single. Sarah Tiffany&nbsp; completed the rally with an RBI double to the right-center gap to tie the game 3-3. Northwest Missouri State retook the the lead in the sixth on a 2-out RBI single by Olivia Daugherty.

Lily Sale started the Tigers seventh inning rally with a walk. Grace Philp advanced her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Sara Breckbill walked then a chopper by Loren Beggs found its way through the left side to lead the bases. The Bearcats threw out the potential tying run at the plate on an infield grounder for the second out. Parmley then entered as a pinch-hitter and drove in the tying and winning runs on a flare to right field that fell out of the reach of Dougherty trying to make a diving catch. The Tigers will host Missouri Western in a matchup of top four teams in the MIAA standings Sunday at 12 pm.&nbsp;

🥎 Tigers rally to sweep Bearcats

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals and Toronto Blue Jays got wildly different yet equally effective pitching performances in splitting their day-night doubleheader on Saturday.

In the opener, starter Steven Matz held the Royals without a hit into the sixth inning, and Jonathan Davis and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homered to give the Blue Jays a 5-1 victory. In the nightcap, the Royals followed veteran Ervin Santana’s spot start with four relief pitchers before Salvador Perez’s two-out, walk-off homer gave them a 3-2 win.

Greg Holland (2-1) was the last of the relievers in Game 2 for Kansas City, working around an error in the seventh inning to keep the game tied 2-all. Joel Payamps (0-1) then retired Whit Merrifield and Andrew Benintendi in the bottom half before Perez sent a pitch splashing into the left-field fountains to earn the doubleheader split.

“He never ceases to amaze us with what he does,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “I think he was tired of waiting around for someone to get on base,”

Or maybe he was just ready to go home after Friday’s rainout forced them to play a doubleheader.

The afternoon began with Matz (3-0) allowing just a pair of walks before Nicky Lopez’s blooper with one out in the sixth inning. He gave up Benintendi’s two-out double later in the inning for the only other blemish on an otherwise excellent outing — six innings, five strikeouts and just five balls that left the infield.

“It’s fun to get in a groove early in the season, especially when you have a lineup like this,” said Matz, who struggled with injuries throughout his six seasons with the Mets. “Get a little better every time out. That’s the goal going forward.”

Other than a shaky first, the Royals’ Mike Minor matched Matz pitch for pitch most of the way.

Minor (1-1) retired his first two batters before Guerrero and Randal Grichuk hit back-to-back singles and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. drilled a two-run double off the wall. That was all the runs until Davis hit his first homer, a drive off the left-field foul pole leading off the fifth. Guerrero tagged his second homer of the series leading off the sixth.

“Always looking for the first one,” Davis said, “and now I can breath a little bit.”

Even if Matz didn’t allow a hit all game, his sterling start wouldn’t have been an official no-hitter because teams or pitchers must play at least nine innings to qualify. The decision to shorten doubleheader games to seven innings apiece for the 2021 season means Matz and the Blue Jays would have needed at least two extra innings for it to count.

The only no-hitter in Blue Jays history is Dave Stieb’s 3-0 win over the Indians on Sept. 2, 1990.

“We ran into a good start today. Matz was throwing the ball well,” Matheny said. “He had good late movement — you could tell the guys weren’t seeing the late movement. Really baring in, using the back door.”

The second game was tied 2-all in the fourth inning, turning it into a chess match between bullpens. The Blue Jays’ finally cracked when Payamps, their fourth reliever after spot-starter Tommy Milone, served up Perez’s game-ending homer.

“We knew we had well-rested arms in the bullpen ready for leverage,” Matheny said. “I thought everybody did a nice job coming through. That’s a tough one. All of them did a fantastic job of keeping us right there with a good offense.”

Royals 1B Carlos Santana drew his 1,000th walk leading off the seventh inning of the opener, joining Albert Pujols, Joey Votto and Miguel Cabrera as the only active players in the club.

“Happy. Happy and blessed,” Santana said. “It’s another point in my career.”

Well-traveled Ervin Santana made his first big league appearance since April 24, 2019, with the White Sox at Baltimore, and he made his first start for Kansas City since Sept. 25, 2013 — the 2,761 days between games are the fourth-longest in franchise history. Santana also became the fourth-oldest starter in club history at 38 years, 126 days.

Blue Jays: OF George Springer (quadriceps and oblique) is doing some light running and will begin taking batting practice, but manager Charlie Montoyo said there is still no timeframe for his return.

The Royals traded OF Nick Heath to the Diamondbacks for minor league RHP Eduardo Herrera. Heath had been designated for assignment earlier in the week. The 21-year-old Herrera has yet to pitch above Class A as a professional.

⚾ Royals earn doubleheader split with Jays on Perez’s walk-off

HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State used three, three-run home runs from Kade Wallace, Ed Scott and Grand Schmidt to power their way to a 12-4 win over Northwest Missouri State Saturday in the first game of their three-game series at Larks Park. 

It's the Tigers (6-20, 6-16 MIAA) fourth straight win and the fourth straight game in which they've scored 12 or more runs. The Bearcats (12-18, 10-12 MIAA) have lost three straight.

It also gave head coach Jerod Goodale his 200th career coaching victory.

The Bearcats struck first, scoring a run in the top of the first innings but first baseman Kade Wallace cut down a runner at the plate to end the inning. The Tigers answered with two in the bottom of the inning. After back-to-back errors, Grant Schmidt&nbsp;singled to score Jacob Bouzide to tie the game. Wallace eventually scored on a wild pitch to put the Tigers ahead for good.&nbsp;

Wallace hit the first of the three home runs in the bottom of the second. his fifth homer of the season which put the Tigers up 5-1. Scott made it 8-1 with his blast over to right-center in the third.&nbsp; Northwest trimmed the lead to 8-4 with a run in the fourth then a two-run homer in the fifth, but the Tigers sealed the deal with four more runs in the bottom of the eighth. After a leadoff 11-pitch at-bat resulting in a single from Griffin Brunson followed by a&nbsp;bunt single from Drake Angeron and a&nbsp;walk by Bouzide, Wallace hit a sacrifice fly which scored Brunson. Schmidt capped the scoring with another three-run blast to left field, his seventh homer of the season. Starter Jake Campbell&nbsp;(4-3) allowed four runs on six hits with four walks and five strikeouts over six innings and picked up the win. Jacob Ensz pitched the final three innings for his third save of the season.&nbsp;Ensz scattered three hits with one strikeout.&nbsp; Fort Hays State and Northwest Missouri State will close out their weekend series with a double-header beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday at Larks Park in Hays.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The Kansas City Royals scheduled game with the Toronto Blue Jays has been postponed to to expected wet weather Friday night in the Kansas City area.

The two teams will now play a split double header on Saturday that will include two 7-inning games.

The first game begins at 1:10 p.m. and the second at 5:10 p.m. We will not have game one on KAYS (94.3-FM, 1400-AM) due to Fort Hays State baseball. Game two will be joined in progress following the Tigers and Bearcats which begins at 3:00 p.m.

🏐 Tigers fall to UCO in MIAA Tournament opener

COLBY — Trojans center Matt McFarlane signed a letter of intent on Thursday with Wichita State University during the first day of the spring signing period.

At 6-10 and 210 pounds, McFarlane tallied 10.7 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks while shooting 53 percent from the floor this season. As a freshman, he averaged 11.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.8 blocks.

In two seasons at CCC, the Philadelphia, Pa., native earned Jayhawk Conference honorable mention twice. He was part of Colby's top-10 national ranking a year ago in a season in which the Trojans secured the first men's basketball conference regular-season title in school history, followed by their first national tournament berth.

McFarlane chose WSU over Loyola Chicago, St. John's, George Mason, and Colorado.

"Matt is big and athletic," said Shockers Head Coach Issac Brown. "He runs and jumps well, he can score facing up or with his back to the basket, and he has great instincts as a shot-blocker. He's been well-coached by Rusty Elmore and the staff at Colby."

Jakob Junis ran his scoreless streak to 14 innings. The offense pumped out five extra-base hits, stringing enough together to produce a seven-run lead. And when Kansas City’s bullpen was on the ropes, Scott Barlow retired hot-hitting Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to leave the potential tying run on base and earn the save.

All of which left Matheny stumped when he walked into the postgame clubhouse Thursday night.

“There was no music,” he said. “I heard people yelling at Brady Singer — I don’t know if they’ve made him the impromptu DJ, but he dropped the ball. I was a little disappointed. I wondered if they didn’t think that was a good enough win.”

The Royals have won three straight and four of five to take over first place in the AL Central.

Junis (1-0) was charged with two runs on five hits and a walk while pitching into the sixth, but both his runs scored with reliever Jake Newberry on the mound. Kyle Zimmer also gave up a run before Barlow finished things off.

“Any time you’re winning ballgames, it’s always really fun in the clubhouse,” Barlow said. “The team looks really good, you know? Watching the hitters do their thing tonight was really fun. It’s been fun to watch.”

Guerrero finished a triple shy of the cycle for the Blue Jays. The highlight for them was his two-out homer in the seventh that soared over the fountains in left field and landed an estimated 456 feet from home plate.

It certainly wasn’t spot starter Anthony Kay (0-1), who gave up five runs and six hits in 3 1/3 innings.

“I felt like I made a bunch of good pitches,” he said. “They were just finding holes, and sometimes that’s just how it is.”

The Royals had been in an offensive slumber before breaking out against the Angels on Wednesday. A lineup built to drive the ball into the spacious gaps at Kauffman Stadium continued to pile up the extra-base hits Thursday night.

Andrew Benintendi began the scoring with an RBI double before Kay even got an out. Nicky Lopez continued with an RBI triple in the third — then scored on an error by third baseman Cavan Biggio. But the big blow to the Blue Jays came in the fifth, when four of the first six batters that Kansas City sent to the plate dropped doubles into the outfield.

Jorge Soler led off with the 100th double of his career. Hunter Dozier and Hanser Alberto followed with one-out doubles. And Whit Merrifield capped the four-run frame with a two-run double for a 7-0 lead.

Junis’ streak of 14 scoreless innings to start the season finally ended in the sixth, when Newberry allowed both of the runners he inherited to score during what became a four-run inning for the Blue Jays.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Guard Kyle Cuffe Jr. has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Kansas, KU head coach Bill Self announced Thursday. Cuffe will be a freshman at KU for 2021-22. Cuffe is a combo guard who verbally committed to Kansas in December 2020 and has reclassified for 2021. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound, Toms River, New Jersey, native played for powerhouse Blair Academy in Blairstown, New Jersey, under coach Joe Mantegna and is known for his explosive athletic ability, toughness and scoring. “Kyle is a young man that has great upside and the determination to be a great player,” Self said. “He’s an explosive athlete that makes plays on both ends of the floor. His father, Kyle Sr., was a great player at St. John’s and has been instrumental in Kyle’s development. &nbsp; KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Whitney Randall, a senior women's basketball student-athlete at Fort Hays State University, is the 2021 MIAA Women's Winter Student-Athlete of the Year. Kizan David, a senior track and field student-athlete from Lincoln University, is the 2021 MIAA Men's Winter Student-Athlete of the Year. The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced both honors on Thursday, presented by Summit Pointe Financial Group. This award temporarily replaces the annual Ken B. Jones Award, which normally recognizes the top female and top male student-athlete in the MIAA for all seasons. However, since fall sports did not have an opportunity to post accolades for this academic year, the MIAA COVID-19 Task Force implemented student-athlete of the year honors for both the winter and spring seasons with the nomination and selection process structured identically to the Ken B. Jones Award. Randall and David received the most votes from a 13-member panel of conference administrators. They were among five women's and five men's finalists announced on April 7th by the MIAA office. The award is based on the athletic, academic, and campus/community service accomplishments of individuals. The voting committee reviews an individual's career academic accomplishments, along with their athletic accomplishments and campus/community service from the 2020-21 year. Individuals must be a junior or senior in athletic eligibility and have a GPA of at least 3.25. Female finalists alongside Randall were Hunter Bentley of Washburn, Ashlan Burton of Central Missouri, Kelsey Johnson of Central Oklahoma, and Trace Mosby of Pittsburg State. She helped the Tigers to their sixth appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the last seven years, while leading the team in scoring (15.0 points per game). She scored in double figures in 21 of 26 games and reached at least 20 points in a game five times. During the 2020-21 season, she became the 22nd&nbsp;player in FHSU Women's Basketball program history to reach 1,000 career points at FHSU, now with 1,033. Randall has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA over four years of college as a Health &amp; Human Performance major at FHSU, with an emphasis in Teaching and Coaching. The Alva, Oklahoma native is a four-time recipient of the MIAA Academic Excellence Award and received the MIAA Scholar-Athlete Award this season for gaining All-MIAA honors on the court. Off the court, Randall has volunteered her time with Tiger Pals and Night to Shine in Hays, while also serving as a Christian camp counselor. She has also been on three international mission trips in her time at FHSU to Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Canada. Kizan David – Lincoln University, Men's Indoor Track and Field Kizan David claimed the individual national title in the Indoor long jump back in mid-March. He also scored a second-place national finish in the triple jump. An All-American in both events, David also won the triple jump and finished as the runner-up in the long jump at the MIAA Indoor Championships, and earned two USTFCCCA All-Region awards in 2021. David led the country in the triple jump and was fifth nationally in the long jump entering the NCAA Division II Championships. David has excelled in the classroom during his time at Lincoln, where he is a member of the university's honor society. David was selected to the CoSIDA/Google Cloud Academic All-America First Team and the CoSIDA/Google Cloud Academic All-District First Team in both 2019 and 2020. He is a five-time recipient of the MIAA Scholar-Athlete Award, maintaining a 3.959 GPA as a Computer Information Systems major. David has spent several years serving as a Lincoln University Peer Tutor, and this year helped distribute food to the elderly in the Jefferson City community. He has also served as a volunteer cricket instructor for local children, and volunteered at several University of Missouri football games.&nbsp;&nbsp;

He averaged 12.8 points per game this past season for Drake and was even more impressive down the stretch averaging 23.2 points during the final nine games of the year. The Bolingbrook, Illinois, native scored 30-points twice against Evansville, including a career-high 36 on Feb. 22. “Joseph is an explosive, dynamic scoring guard that will allow us to play an up-tempo, aggressive style on both ends of the floor,” Self said. “He ended last season playing at a high level, including winning an NCAA tournament game and propelling Drake to a great season.” Yesufu started the last seven games of the 2020-21 season, including four post-season contests, and was the 2021 Missouri Valley Conference Sixth Man of the Year and was chosen to the league’s all-bench and most improved teams. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvador Pérez homered and doubled to cap off an impressive series, leading Brad Keller and the Kansas City Royals over the Los Angeles Angels 6-1. 

A day after picking off David Fletcher at third base to end a 3-2 win, &nbsp;Pérez drove in two runs. The All-Star catcher went 8 for 12 with four RBIs this week against Los Angeles. 

Carlos Santana also homered as the Royals took two of three from the Angels. 

It was the Royals’ second series win of the year — it took them 14 tries to do that during the pandemic-shortened season.

⚾FHSU Baseball Shifts Home Series With Bearcats

GREAT BEND - Dylan Dreiling tied the Hays High School single-game record for strikeouts in leading the Indians to a 3-0 win over Great Bend Tuesday night at the Great Bend Sports Complex. The Indians junior struck out 18 and
allowed only one hit as the Indians bounced back from their only loss
of the season.

Dreiling faced one batter over the minimum as the Indians
improve to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. Sage Koelsch
drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first but Dreiling would get two
strikeouts and first baseman Dalyn Schwarz would make a diving stop at first
base on a grounder off the bat of Chayse Gruber.

The Panthers only hit came in the fourth when Brad
Beck doubled off the glove of diving leftfielder Dominic Bainter. Beck was
later thrown out by catcher Remington Cox trying to steal third. Dreiling
struck out the next eight and closed the game striking out 10 of the final 11
batters he faced.

The Indians scored their runs on a Garrett
Wellbrock two-out single to left which scored Dawson VonFeldt and Ben
Krannawitter. Dreiling added a two-out RBI single in the fifth which scored
Krannawitter who doubled the at-bat before.

runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a loss. The Panthers had their three-game
win streak snapped and drop to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the Western Athletic

⚾ Dreiling one-hitter leads Indians past Great Bend

ELLSWORTH – TMP-Marian’s Abby Rueschhoff won the
long jump (15-08.75) and the triple jump (33-05.75) and Sasha Wasinger the shot
put (34-02.25) to lead the TMP-Marian girls at the Ellsworth Invitational Track
&amp; Field Meet Tuesday. 

Makinsey Schlautman finished second in the high
jump (4-10.00) and the Monarchs 4x400 relay team of Emilee Lane, Kadrian
Ayarza, Aliya Seib and Nevaeh Weigel placed second (4:35.62).

Kade Harris finished second in the boys long jump
(20-6.00). Jace Lang was second in the triple jump (37-06.00).

The Monarch girls finished fourth and the boys
seventh.

Trego’s Gunner Wilson won the boys triple jump (40-11.50)
and Windom Giefer the 1600 (4:30.08) and 3200 (9:40.87) to help the Golden
Eagle boys to a second place finish. 

Owen Day was second in the javelin (152-11) and
Kobi Shubert third (150-10.50). Zach Meis of TMP came in fourth (133-01).

James Kriegh finished second in the 200 (23.47).
Cole Feldt was second in the 300 hurdles (45.27).

Lili Shubert finished second in the girls’ pole
vault (8-6)

HAYS – Hays High got a walkoff 5-4 eight inning
win in game one of their doubleheader with Garden City Tuesday. The Buffaloes
took the second game 9-5 as the Indians move 3-4 on the season and 1-4 in the
Western Athletic Conference.

Game 1:
Hays 5, Garden City 4 (8 innings)

Ashlynn Zimmer singled with one out in the eighth,
stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball then scored the game winning
run on a passed ball.

Garden City scored two in the top of the first.
The Indians tied the game with two in the bottom of the fifth then took a 3-2
lead with a run in the sixth on freshman Lakymn Zimmerman’s double to left
scoring Zimmer.

The Buffs scored two in the top of the seventh to
take a 4-3 lead but Hays forced extra innings when Morgen Berry singled to
right scoring freshman Dezarae Schmidt with two outs.

Freshman Aubree Thomas allowed two unearned runs
with eight strikeouts and no walks for the win.

Game 2:
Garden City 9, Hays 5 
The Indians struck first, scoring three in the bottom of the first and led 4-1
after two innings, but the Buffs scored three in the third and four in the
fourth to take control.

Morgen Berry had two of the Indians six hits and
drove in a run. Raegan Winter knocked in two runs.

The Indians committed five errors resulting in six
unearned runs.

Thomas struck out 10 without allowing a walk but gave
up 12 hits and took the loss.

HAYS – Karli Komerek’s one-out single to center
scored Kaydence Kendall from third with the game winning run leading the
TMP-Marian softball team to a 6-5 walkoff win over Ellis in game two of their
doubleheader Tuesday at the TMP Field. The Monarchs (5-1, 2-0 MCL) won the
opener 13-2.

Sophia Coulter reached on an error and advanced to
second to open the bottom of the seventh in game two. After an intentional walk
to Hannah Garcia, Madison Augustine flied out to the shortstop then Alexa
Ryersee lines to short advancing Kendall to third and Garcia to second. Kendall
then came in to run for Coulter at third and scored on Komarek’s single.

Madison Augustine allowed one run on not hits with
five strikeouts and three walks in 4 2/3 innings of relief for the win. Starter
Kyleigh Allen allowed four runs on two hits with one strikeout and two walks
over 2 1/3 innings.

The Monarchs trailed game one 2-1 when they scored
five runs in the second and seven in the third in the game called after five
due to run-rule.

Emilee Augustine had three of the Monarchs 14 hits
and drove in two. Jaci VonLintel went 2-for-4 and knocked in three runs. Halle
Dreiling also had two RBIs.

Madison Augustine went distance allowing two runs
on four hits with eight strikeouts and two walks over five innings.

🥎 Walkoff gives Monarchs sweep over Ellis

GOODLAND – The TMP-Marian Monarchs boys team combined to shoot
a 364 and brought home to team title at the Goodland tournament Tuesday.

TMP’s Jackson Schulte was the highest finisher Tuesday. He
fired a 13-over 84 to finish in a three-way tie for 5th.

Landon Rozean earned an 11th place finish with a
16-over 87.

Joel Johnson fired a 95 to finished 20th and Pake
Dewey finished 27th with a 98.

The Monarchs 364 team scored was two shots better than
second place Rawlins County’s 366. Colby was third with a 369.

They were led by Brady Frickey’s ninth place finished with a
15-over 86.

Blake Buckles finished a 96 to lead Hays. Ashton Bickle was
28th with a 99 and Kai Schafer finished 40th with a 104.

🏌️Monarchs win Goodland tournament

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Royals catcher Salvador Perez picked David Fletcher off third with the bases loaded for the final out in the ninth inning, helping the Kansas City Royals beat Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 Tuesday night.

Danny Duffy pitched one-run ball over six innings, and Perez had two hits and an RBI.

Kansas City’s veteran backstop ended the game by blocking Greg Holland’s 0-2 pitch in the dirt. The ball bounced off batter Jared Walsh and right back to Perez, who picked it up and caught Fletcher venturing too far off third base.

“I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a game end like that,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “For Salvador to keep that ball in front of him is so impressive. There’s a lot of risk mitigation there, but with a fearless player like Salvador Perez, he can do anything.”

Ohtani showed off impressive speed on an infield single in the first and added a 431-foot homer to right field in the fifth. The two-way star — just a designated hitter in this one — has four homers this season and raised his average to .364 with three hits. Ohtani has reached base in 10 straight games and has eight RBIs in his last four games.

“He is pretty spectacular,” Angels manager Joe Maddon said. “He’s going up there with a lot of confidence and you’re seeing it with his swing and approach. We’re getting closer to him getting back on the mound, too.”

Duffy (2-0) went six frames for a second straight outing, allowing eight hits and six strikeouts. He ended his night striking out Jack Mayfield with the bases loaded to close out the sixth.

“That was a big situation and my boys backed me up defensively,” Duffy said. “I was just trying to empty the tank and I was able to get a good heater in there. It felt good.”

Holland completed a four-out save for his first of the season, which included a strikeout of Mike Trout, who was fanned four times in the game.

In the first inning, Carlos Santana hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Andrew Benintendi. Santana added another RBI in the third, scoring Whit Merrifield to lead 2-0.

Merrifield hit a pop-up in foul territory in the fifth that was dropped by catcher Kurt Suzuki. He reached base two pitches later and eventually scored on a two-out RBI single by Perez, who is thriving at the plate following a 4 for 4 game Tuesday night.

“We had great situational hitting tonight,” Matheny said. “Those things some people call little things we did well.”

Suzuki hit a sacrifice fly off Wade Davis in the eighth to cut the deficit to one.

Dylan Bundy (0-1) went seven innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits and two walks. He struck out six.

Angels: Placed C Max Stassi (left thumb sprain) and OF Juan Lagares (left calf strain) on the 10-day injured list, recalled C Anthony Bemboom and selected the contract of OF Jon Jay.

Royals: Selected the contract of RHP Ervin Santana and recalled RHP Tyler Zuber while sending INF Ryan McBroom to the alternative site and placed RHP Josh Staumont on the 10-day injured list.

The Angels send RHP Griffin Canning (0-0, 6.75) to the mound as the Royals counter with RHP Brad Keller. Canning went 5 1/3 innings allowing four earned runs in his last start against Toronto. Keller will try to bounce back after giving up 10 earned runs in just 4 2/3 innings this season.

⚾ Perez ends game with pickoff, KC beats Angels

HAYS – Three Ellis pitchers held the TMP-Marian Monarchs to
three total hits in a pair of shutout wins Tuesday at TMP in Hays.

Ellis starter Tegan Cain turned in six shutout inning while
striking out 13 and the Railroaders scored six runs in the top of the third
inning on their way to a 7-0 win in game one of the doubleheader.

Ellis took advantage of a hit-by-pitch to open the game and
scored the game’s first run on a wild pitch to lead 1-0 in the top of the first
inning. 

TMP threatened in their half the first and got a couple of
runners aboard but Cain was able to work off the hook, stranding two runners.

After a one out walk in the top of the first Cain turned in
four and two-thirds innings of no-hit ball. Jace Wentling’s infield single with
two outs in the fifth inning broke up Cains no-hit bid. At one point Cain retired
13 of 15 hitters he faced.

Cain allowed just the one hit with 13 strikeouts and walked
two in the victory as he improved to 2-0 on the year..

In Ellis’ six-run third inning Tyson Jimenez led off the
inning with an inside-the-park home run to make is 2-0.

Jarrett Mader added an RBI single making it 3-0 before Ellis
scored on an error, back-to-back base loaded walks and a hit-by-pitch to take a
7-0 lead through two and a half innings.

TMP’s Caden Morgan suffered the loss for TMP. He allowed six
runs, just one earned, in two and a third innings. He struck out one and walked
one.

Ellis’ Tyson Jimenez allowed only a single with one out in
the bottom of the seventh inning in seven shutout innings in game two of the
doubleheader.

Both teams threatened, getting runners aboard in their half
of the first inning but neither team was able to manufacture any offense.

For TMP Jace Wentling reached on a two-base error to lead
off the game. Jimenez would go on to retire the next 14 batters he faced before
allowing a two-out walk in the fifth. 

It took a one-out base hit by Caden Morgan in the bottom of
the seventh to break up the no-hit bid.

Jimenez turned in seven shutout innings with 13 strike outs,
two walks and just one-hit allowed as he moved to 3-0 on the season.

The Ellis offense kicked off a four-run third inning with
Jimenez collecting his first of three walks in the game. Two hitters later Jimenez
scored on a wild pitch to put Ellis up 1-0.

The Railers added runs on an error, ground out and a George
Crawford RBI single for a 4-0 lead.

Ellis added single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth
innings on their way to the 7-0 win.

TMP starter Mark Rack allowed four runs, just one earned, on
three hits with four strikeouts and three walks in two and two-thirds innings
and suffered the loss.

The Monarchs committed seven errors in the loss and only one
of the seven runs were earned in the game.

Ellis’ Tegan Cain was two-for-five with an RBI and two runs
scored.

Ellis improved to 6-0 while TMP dropped to 4-2.

TMP is scheduled to host Russell on Friday.
