KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ochai Agbaji tried to convince everyone listening that he wasn't looking past UTEP to a showdown with Missouri.

The smirk that he tried to hide gave him away.

Still, the high-scoring Kansas guard held his focus long enough to pour in 23 points Tuesday night, helping the eighth-ranked Jayhawks roll to a 78-52 blowout of the Miners in their last tune-up for the return of the Border War.

“I know the rivalry. I know the Border War,” Agbaji said. “It means a lot to me because growing up on the Missouri side, I kind of get their perspective on KU. Now being at KU, I just know they hate each other.”

There wasn't such disdain for UTEP, though the Jayhawks didn't treat their visitors kindly.

Christian Braun scored 20 points, and David McCormack and Mitch Lightfoot had eight apiece, as the Jayhawks (7-1) built a 21-point lead by the break at T-Mobile Center and never looked back in one of their most dominant performances of the season.

“Ochai's playing really well and, like I said last game, I'm just feeding off him,” Braun said. “Especially early, he's been on a roll. That's Ochai. We don't have to be surprised anymore, or think he's on some little run. That's who he's going to be.”

Souley Boom had 18 points and Keonte Kennedy 11 for UTEP (4-4), which famously beat the Jayhawks during their 1966 national title run immortalized in the film “Glory Road.” The Miners also beat Kansas to reach the Sweet 16 in 1992.

Such history had little bearing Tuesday night.

The Jayhawks, the nation's sixth-highest scoring team, showed right away they can play a little defense, too, forcing UTEP into missing its first six shots and committing four turnovers before Boum knocked down a 3-pointer.

By then, the Jayhawks had a 10-point lead and didn't look back. They forced a series of turnovers — at one point, four in five possessions — and most of them turned into layups at the other end. When Kansas was forced to run some offense, it merely had to find Braun cutting to the basket or McCormack posting up for an easy lay-in or dunk.

“They're a well-oiled basketball team and they can make you really question yourself at times," UTEP associate head coach Jeremy Cox said. “They're extremely talented, extremely well-coached. They're well paced. I haven't enjoyed watching and scouting a team going into more than that one. They're worth the price of admission to watch.”

The Jayhawks eventually led 42-21 at halftime, then cruised the rest of the way into Saturday's showdown.

Kansas and Missouri began playing in 1907 but haven't taken the floor together — besides an exhibition for hurricane relief — since the Tigers jilted the Jayhawks and the rest of the Big 12 for the riches of the SEC. In their last game, Kansas rallied from 19 down to win at Allen Fieldhouse on Feb. 25, 2012.

The Jayhawks and Tigers were supposed to begin their six-game series last year, but it was pushed to this year because of the pandemic. Their football teams have since decided to play a four-game set beginning in 2025.

“I assume there won't be a lot of empty seats,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “It's the best game on our schedule. You can talk about Kentucky or Texas or Baylor — this is the best game on our schedule, at least for fan participation and player participation.”

Self was given a technical foul with 9:44 left and his team leading 58-39. He took umbrage when official Amy Bonner called a foul on Jalen Wilson during a fight for a rebound. Self sarcastically clapped after the “T” was given.

UTEP: Had been competitive in its first three losses by a combined 21 points, but the Miners trailed by that with 7 1/2 minutes left in the first half Tuesday night. Still, they played the Jayhawks even most of the second half.

Kansas: Got sloppy on offense after the break, particularly when running the fast break. That was just about the only flaw on what was perhaps the Jayhawks' best defensive performance of the season so far.

Now at 7-0 overall, the Tigers are off to their best start since the 2013-14 season. The Tigers are among the receiving votes section of both polls. Fort Hays State received five votes this week in the NABC poll. The Tigers are 36th in the order of voting points for the poll and are one of six teams from the Central Region mentioned in the poll (3 among the Top 25 and 3 among the receiving votes list). 🏀 Tiger women remain atop national rankings

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State senior wrestler&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5807">Marty Verhaeghe</a>&nbsp;has been named the latest MIAA Wrestler of the Week, announced Tuesday (Dec. 7) by the league office. Verhaeghe, currently the 11th-ranked wrestler at 184 pounds in Division II, picked up the honor after a third-place finish at the&nbsp;Conner/Oppenheim Doane Open on Saturday (Dec. 4). He finished the day 5-1 overall, including three wins over Division I opponents. His first two wins were major decisions, including a 13-3 win against Sam Kruger of South Dakota State and a dominating 11-0 victory over Brahn Howard of Texas Wesleyan.&nbsp;His only loss was in sudden victory in the semifinals against the eventual champion, Nathan Haas from Nebraska. The Bucyrus, Kan. native finished the day with two more wins against wrestlers from South Dakota State, including a 7-3 decision over Caleb Orris and a 5-3 sudden victory win over Kruger. A sixth-year senior, Verhaeghe&nbsp;has placed in the top four at all four tournaments so far this season, accumulating an overall record of 18-3. Seven of those victories have been bonus-point wins. Verhaeghe and his Tiger teammates will wrestle at home for the first time this season Sunday (Dec. 12) when Fort Hays State hosts the annual Bob Smith Open. On Tuesday the pair was named to the <a href="https://www.kfbca.com/uploads/5/1/6/2/51620301/2021_kfbca_all_state_results.pdf">Kansas Football Coaches
Association</a> Top 11 team and the 5A All State Team.

Kanak, who rushed for 1,615 yards and threw for another 910 yards
with 35 total touchdowns this season was a 5A All State selection as an athlete.

Meyers finished the year with 124 total tackles, 13 for loss
and three sacks and an interception and was named to the 5A All State defensive
team as a linebacker.

Both Smith Center and Plainville also had three players each
named to the 1A All State Team.

Smith Center offensive lineman Colton Haresnape and running
back Jake Kirchhoff were honored on offense and Andrew Wilkinson was named to
the 1A All State team as a kicker and punter.

Plainville’s Dakota Yost was named to the All State Team on
the defensive line and Brandon Brin at the linebacker position.

Anders Dewey was honored as a returner for the Cardinals.

The teams are made up of seniors only and only players whose
coaches are paying members of the Kansas Football Coaches Association are

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State struggled a bit early against Avila University on Monday evening at Gross Memorial Coliseum, but eventually pulled away in the second half for a 75-59 win. The Tigers moved to 7-0 overall, their best start since 2013-14, against the 4-7 Eagles.

The Tigers could not shake off the Eagles in the first half. Avila shot 50 percent from the field and 50 percent beyond the 3-point line (7-of-14) to stay within one point of the Tigers at halftime. Avila led twice in the first half at 11-10 and 14-12. The Tigers had a 14-2 run to build a 10-point lead, but saw Avila counter with a 17-7 run to get the game tied at 33-33. A&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6460">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;3-point field goal capped the scoring for the Tigers in the first half and an Avila 2-point bucket just before the horn left the Tigers with just the one-point lead at the break. The Tigers clamped down on the Avila attack in the second half, forcing the Eagles to shoot just 31 percent from the field and 22.2 percent beyond the 3-point line. While doing so, the Tigers opened the half on an 18-9 run to build a 10-point advantage once again. Avila would not get any closer than eight points from that point and the Tigers enjoyed their largest lead of 22 points with about 50 seconds remaining on the clock. Avila hit two more 3-point field goals before the final horn to bring the final margin back to 16.

Hammeke led the Tigers with a near double-double effort of 23 points and nine assists. The nine helpers were a new career high in a game for Hammeke. He shot 9-of-13 from the field and 3-of-5 beyond the 3-point line, while making both of his charity tosses.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6468">Jared Vitztum</a>&nbsp;produced his third double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds. 🏀📻 - LISTEN Tiger men seek seventh straight win to open season vs. Avila

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs' Andy Reid is an offensive-minded coach to his core, so the Kansas City defense must have done something special against the Denver Broncos on Sunday night for him to call its performance “beautiful.”

Three turnovers. Three fourth-down stops. One pick-6 to seal a fifth straight win.

“It was just beautiful to watch,” Reid gushed after the 22-9 victory in chilly Arrowhead Stadium, which kept Kansas City in first place in the crowded AFC West as it chases a sixth consecutive division crown.

Patrick Mahomes had just 184 yards passing with a touchdown run and an interception, and his receiving corps dropped so many passes he probably thought the ball was greased. But despite the Chiefs (8-4) gaining 257 yards of total offense, they managed to keep a one-game lead on the Chargers thanks to the other side of the ball.

“Mostly it's been about a commitment to each other, believing in each other, not letting outside noise dictate what we feel,” Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu said. “It's been a total team effort to stay committed to each other.”

“We moved the ball well in certain areas, certain times of the game. Guys stepped up and made plays,” Bridgewater said. “But when you give them opportunities and you don't maximize your opportunities, it's a recipe to get beat.”

Bridgewater was held to 257 yards passing for the Broncos (6-6), who have lost 12 in a row to their longtime rival dating to the 2015 season. Javonte Williams started in place of injured running back Melvin Gordon III and had 102 yards rushing along with a touchdown catch late in the fourth quarter.

“The loss makes you feel empty no matter what," Broncos coach Vic Fangio said.

The Chiefs must have spent their bye working on their opening offensive script, because they effortlessly flew downfield for a touchdown. They even overcame an offensive pass-interference call before Mahomes scampered for the score.

After the Chiefs forced a second consecutive three-and-out, Harrison Butker made a 56-yard field goal.

That was just about the last anyone saw of Mahomes and Co. for a while.

The Broncos answered with a field goal of their own. Then, after forcing a quick punt, they embarked on a 20-play odyssey that carried them 83 yards and chewed up nearly 12 minutes of the second quarter — and resulted in no points.

Denver twice converted on fourth down to keep the drive alive, then went for the hat trick on fourth-and-2 at the Kansas City 8. Williams took the handoff and was stuffed by linebacker Willie Gay Jr. for a turnover on downs, the first time since 2009 that a 20-play driving lasting at least 11 minutes didn't result in points.

“Frustrating. That's all I can really say,” Broncos receiver Courtland Sutton said. “It would be nice to get points.”

That wasn't the end of the Broncos' woes. They went three-and-out on their first drive of the second half, Bridgewater was picked off by Juan Thornhill on their next, and Caden Sterns ran into returner Diontae Spencer after forcing Kansas City to punt; the Chiefs managed to hop on the muff for a fresh set of downs.

Butker hit his third field goal a few minutes later, extending the lead to 16-3 with 13 1/2 minutes to go, and Sorensen tacked on his pick-6 to put the game out of reach.

“It's tough to win in this league,” said Reid, who improved to 20-3 coming off a bye, including 7-2 since his arrival in Kansas City. “And to have that opportunity against a good football team, we'll feel good about ourselves for a minute here until we get ourselves ready for the Raiders come Tuesday.”

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Markquis Nowell scored seven of his 16 points in the final 1:35 and Kansas State used a late surge to defeat Wichita State 65-59 on Sunday in the renewal of an in-state rivalry.

Wichita State then lost the ball and&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/KStateMBB/status/1467661934308872195" target="_blank">Selton Miguel found Mark Smith for a breakaway dunk</a>&nbsp;at 48 seconds. The Wildcats added a Miguel free throw after Kaosi Ezeagu drew an offensive foul for a 62-54 lead with 39 seconds to go.

The Shockers got two quick baskets from Tyson Etienne and then the Wildcats missed two free throws before Etienne missed a shot, leading two Nowell’s two free throws and a 64-58 lead with 14 seconds to play.

Ezeagu added 14 points for the Wildcats (5-2), Miguel had 12 and Mike McGuirl 10. Nowell had eight rebounds and four assists.

Morris Udeze scored 19 points for Wichita State (5-2) and Etienne had 11 on a tough shooting night when he was 4 of 20, 1 of 11 from 3-point range.

🤼‍♀️ HHS girls open season in Valley Center

The Hays High Indians and Free State Firebirds squared off for the championship of the 39th Annual Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout. The two entered state ranked. Hays at #7 in 5A and Free State at #1 in 6A.

Free State led the entire first half after scoring the first four points of the game. The Indians were never closer than one point in the first sixteen minutes, with a score of 4-3 following a Noah Weimer three pointer.

Free State built a lead of nine for a second time with a free throw to open the second quarter at 15-6. Then led by eight at 17-9 with six minutes left before halftime. Hays though was able to chip away at the lead as the Firebirds missed their next eleven shots. Hays outscored Free State 8-5 in the second quarter and trailed 19-14 at halftime.

Hays opened the second half on a 10-2 run to take their first lead of the game. The run included points from four different players and was capped with a 24-21 Indian advantage.

The two teams proceeded to swap the lead five more times through the remainder of regulation. The Indians had a chance to take the lead with two free throws with 0.5 seconds left on the fourth quarter clock. Hays hit one of two leaving the game to be decided in overtime.

In the extra frame each team made one field goal and turned the ball over twice. The Firebirds took the first lead on a free throw at 40-39. Jace Linenberger scored the only overtime points for Hays with a basket at 41-40. Twenty seconds later Free State made their only field goal, a three pointer for a 43-41 advantage. Hays turned it over on their next possession while Free State made two free throws for the final difference 45-41.

Jace Linenberger scored a team high 13 and Noah Weimer added a career high 10. Jailen Thompson scored 14 and Jordan Brown 11 for the Firebirds who start the year 3-0. Hays falls to 2-1.

Wesley Oakley was named to the Tournament Academic Team. Carson Kieffer, Jordan Dale and Jace Linenberger made the All-Tournament Team. Linenberger was name Most Inspirational Player. Free State's Mozae Downing was name Tournament MVP.

Hays now has ten days off before they host Hoisington on December 14th.

Fort Hays State&nbsp;finishes the year 15-6-2 overall, the second-most wins in program history, while UIndy is now&nbsp;to 18-1-2 heading into next weekend's national semifinals. Though the teams went into the locker room scoreless at halftime, the first half was not devoid&nbsp;of action as the Tigers out-shot the Greyhounds 6-4 with four shots&nbsp;on target. The Tigers added one more shot on goal in the second half, but FHSU was unable to get one past UIndy keeper Dimitrios Karousos. ⚽ Tiger men see season end in NCAA Quarterfinals

EMPORIA, Kan. – Fort Hays State trailed by 13 points at halftime, but stormed back in the second half to force overtime and eventually won on a sweeping hook shot in the lane by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6460">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;with 15 seconds remaining to break a tie game. Tray Buchanan's shot in the waning seconds for Emporia State fell off the mark as the Tigers gutted out a 78-76 win at Emporia State to move to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA. Emporia State (6-2 overall, 1-1 MIAA) shot a blistering 51.7 percent in the first half and finished the opening period on a 22-6 run to take a 37-24 lead into the locker room. Jumah'Ri Turner had 17 points for the Hornets by halftime on 7-of-9 shooting from the field, including a 3-of-3 effort beyond the 3-point line.

The Tigers started to clamp down defensively and opened the second half on a 14-5 run to get the Hornet lead down to four points just four minutes after halftime. The Tigers kept chipping away and then used a 7-0 run capped on a&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6468">Jared Vitztum</a>&nbsp;3-point field goal with 7:22 to go in regulation to tie the game at 58-58.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6467">Quinten Rock</a>&nbsp;then gave FHSU its first lead of the second half on a&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6467">Quinten Rock</a>&nbsp;3-point field goal. The Tigers went on to lead by four with three minutes to go, but a 4-point play by Buchanan with 1:41 to go put the Hornets back on top by one. A Vitztum free throw with 1:22 would be the final scoring of the half as each team missed shots on their final two possessions.

🏀 Tiger men storm back to win in overtime at Emporia State

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs boys basketball team earned a
win over Great Bend in the fourth place game of the Hays City Shootout Saturday
while the TMP girls came up short against Hugoton in the girls third place
game.

Boys: TMP 60, Great Bend 58 TMP seniors Jace Wentling and Gavin Unrein both tallied a
career-high in points as they helped the Monarchs knock off the Great Bend
Panthers 60-58 Saturday at Hays Middle School.

Unrein and Wentling combined to score the first 16 points of
the game for TMP. The first 14 helped TMP (1-2) rush out to a 14-4 lead.

But down 10 Great Bend (0-3) wouldn’t go away, they hit four
straight three pointers as part of a 12-2 run tying the game at 16.

TMP Kenton Ginther added with a three-pointer of his own
that gave TMP a 19-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter TMP was able to maintain the lead for
almost the entire quarter and led by as many as five when Unrein scored four
straight putting TMP up 26-21.

Great Bend was again able to fight their way back into it
and eventually tied the game at 29 late in the first half but TMP’s Luke Rome
hit a field goal right before the end of the half to put TMP up 31-29.

After trailing by four again to open the quarter Great Bend
put together an 8-0 and took the lead for the first time in the game at 38-35. 

The two teams traded the lead back-and-forth and Great Bend
took a 44-42 lead into the final frame.

In the fourth quarter with TMP trailing 48-47 Kade Harris
got a steal for TMP and knocked down a jumper on the other end to give TMP the 49-48
lead with just over minutes to play. A lead they never surrendered the rest of
the way as TMP held off the Panthers for the 60-58 win.

Wentling finished with a career-high 20 points for TMP and Unrein matched his career-high with 19 points.

#1 (3A) Hugoton 52, #7 (3A) TMP 40 In the girls third-place game the TMP girls fell behind Hugoton
early and could overcome the deficit and fall 52-40 in a battle of ranked teams.

Kassidi Yost opened the game with a TMP (1-2) field goal and
Hannah Garcia added a three-pointer as the Monarchs jumped out to an early 5-2
lead but Hugoton (2-1) answered with an 11-1 run to end the first quarter and led
14-6 after one.

A Sophia Balthazor three-pointer for TMP to open the second
quarter cut the Eagles lead to 14-9 but five quick points put the Eagles up by
10.

The Monarchs were able to trim the deficit back to single
digits and got within six twice in the second quarter, the last time a 28-22 at
the end of the first half.

A Garcia field goal pulled TMP with four at 28-24 to open
the second half but a 7-0 Eagles run put them up by 11 at 35-24.

Emilee Lane scored the final eight points of the third
quarter for TMP as they cut the deficit to five again at 39-34 late in the
third quarter.

But Hugoton again had an answer. This time the Eagles
finished the third quarter and open the fourth on a 7-0 run to go up 12 at
46-34.

In the final frame TMP got within eight on a Brooke Koenigsman
field goal but could get no closer as the Eagle pull away for the 52-40 win.

Emilee Lane led the Monarchs with 14 points. 

Both TMP teams are off until next Friday when the host Hill
City in their Mid-Continent League openers.

PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Fort Hays State track and field team opened the year in outstanding fashion on Saturday (Dec. 4), with five school records going down and nine individuals posting NCAA Division II provisional marks at the Crimson &amp; Gold Invitational Combined with the efforts on Friday in the Boo Rodgers Combined Events, the Tigers recorded a total of six school records and 13 provisional performances on the opening weekend of the 2021-22 indoor season. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6538">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;started the new year where she left off last year - breaking records. The sprinter from Junction City, Kan. broke her own school record in both the 60m dash and the 200m dash while surpassing the NCAA DII provisional threshold in both races. Holman started the day by winning the 60m dash with a time of 7.50, three-hundredths of a second faster than her old record set last year. Later in the day she improved her mark in the 200m dash by nearly two-tenths of a second, winning the race with a time of 24.73. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6498">Philip Landrum</a>&nbsp;posted provisional marks in the same two races, while also breaking the school record in the 200m dash. He began the day by improving his PR in the 60m dash by seven-hundredths of a second, moving up to second on the FHSU DII era performance chart with a time of 6.73 and finishing fifth. He went on to top the field in the 200m dash, breaking an 18-year-old record by eight-hundredths of a second after crossing the line in 21.29. After becoming the first Tiger to ever clear 17 feet in the pole vault en route to his outdoor national title,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6513">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;is now the first Tiger to soar over 17 feet indoors after clearing the 17-0.75 bar on his second attempt. Stanley was one of three competitors to bow out at that height, with the Bennington, Kan. native placing second due to total misses. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6485">Jacob Clark</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6493">Mark Faber</a>&nbsp;also cleared the provisional threshold in the pole vault competition, finishing sixth and eighth, respectively, after clearing the 16-0.75 bar. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6499">Ethan Lang</a>&nbsp;beat the provisional mark in the 800m run, finishing first in the race with a time of 1:52.30. Churchman improved his personal-best total in the event by 588 points while finishing second in the loaded field. He wrapped up the event with the best time in the field in the 1,000m run, crossing the line in a personal-best 2:45.53. PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Fort Hays State track and field team opened the year in outstanding fashion on Saturday (Dec. 4), with five school records going down and nine individuals posting NCAA Division II provisional marks at the Crimson &amp; Gold Invitational Combined with the efforts on Friday in the Boo Rodgers Combined Events, the Tigers recorded a total of six school records and 13 provisional performances on the opening weekend of the 2021-22 indoor season. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6538">Lyric Holman</a>&nbsp;started the new year where she left off last year - breaking records. The sprinter from Junction City, Kan. broke her own school record in both the 60m dash and the 200m dash while surpassing the NCAA DII provisional threshold in both races. Holman started the day by winning the 60m dash with a time of 7.50, three-hundredths of a second faster than her old record set last year. Later in the day she improved her mark in the 200m dash by nearly two-tenths of a second, winning the race with a time of 24.73. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6498">Philip Landrum</a>&nbsp;posted provisional marks in the same two races, while also breaking the school record in the 200m dash. He began the day by improving his PR in the 60m dash by seven-hundredths of a second, moving up to second on the FHSU DII era performance chart with a time of 6.73 and finishing fifth. He went on to top the field in the 200m dash, breaking an 18-year-old record by eight-hundredths of a second after crossing the line in 21.29. After becoming the first Tiger to ever clear 17 feet in the pole vault en route to his outdoor national title,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6513">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;is now the first Tiger to soar over 17 feet indoors after clearing the 17-0.75 bar on his second attempt. Stanley was one of three competitors to bow out at that height, with the Bennington, Kan. native placing second due to total misses. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6485">Jacob Clark</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6493">Mark Faber</a>&nbsp;also cleared the provisional threshold in the pole vault competition, finishing sixth and eighth, respectively, after clearing the 16-0.75 bar. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6499">Ethan Lang</a>&nbsp;beat the provisional mark in the 800m run, finishing first in the race with a time of 1:52.30. That time puts him in fourth on the FHSU DII era performance chart. The final school record and provisional mark came early in the day when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6484">Nolan Churchman</a>&nbsp;completed the heptathlon in the Boo Rodgers Combined Events with 5,304 points, 46 points better than the previous school record. Churchman improved his personal-best total in the event by 588 points while finishing second in the loaded field. He wrapped up the event with the best time in the field in the 1,000m run, crossing the line in a personal-best 2:45.53. EMPORIA, Kan. - Twenty points from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6439">Whitney Randall</a>, another double-double from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6443">Katie Wagner</a>&nbsp;and solid defense all afternoon helped the top-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team grind out a 70-65 win over Emporia State Saturday afternoon (Dec. 4). The win snaps a four-game losing streak for the Tigers inside White Auditorium and is their first road win over ESU since 2015.

The Tigers, now 7-0 for just the seventh time in school history, got off to a bit of a slow start, hitting just two of their first 11 shots from the floor. But the Lady Hornets (5-3, 0-2 MIAA) weren't much better, with ESU knocking down just 25 percent of its shots in the opening quarter. The home team led by as many as three before FHSU scored the final six points to take a 15-11 lead at the end of the first frame. Fort Hays State stretched the run to 12-0 after holding the Lady Hornets scoreless for more than four minutes in the second quarter. Emporia State snapped out of the funk over the final 5:28 of the first half, hitting 7-of-9 from the floor to close within 30-28 at the break. The Tigers would have trailed at halftime had it not been for a corner 3-pointer from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6447">Lauren West</a>&nbsp;with less than a minute to play. The teams traded punches in the third quarter, with Emporia State momentarily taking the lead early in the frame before Randall put the Tigers back in front with a layup. The Lady Hornets tied the score twice later in the frame, but Randall had an answer each time. The senior tallied nine of her season-high 20 points in the third quarter, hitting all three of her field goal attempts and adding three more points at the free-throw line.

After leading by three with 10 minutes to play, Fort Hays State opened the fourth quarter with a 10-2 run to grab its largest lead of the game, 57-46. Wagner scored the next four points to help the Tigers maintain a double-digit lead as Emporia State started to make one final run. The Lady Hornets hit 6-of-7 from the floor and 5-of-6 from behind the arc down the stretch to make things interesting, but Fort Hays State held on thanks to an 8-of-10 effort at the free-throw line over the final three-plus minutes. Emporia State's Tre'Zure Jobe closed the gap to four, 61-57, with a 3-pointer before Randall answered with a triple of her own from the left wing with 90 seconds remaining. 🏀 No. 1 FHSU women knock off Lady Hornets in Emporia

The Hays High girls finished the 39th Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout with Great Bend on Saturday morning. Both teams entered the day looking for their first win of the season. Neither team could find a consistent groove in the first quarter of the 11a.m. game. Turnovers ruled the first four minutes before Hays made a pair of free throws for the first points of the game. Great Bend scored the next six for a 6-2 advantage.

The Indians tied the game at six which started one of their best runs of the young season. Hays built a lead of eight in the second quarter on a long 18-6 run. The Indians however were held scoreless for the next 3:05 and the Panthers trimmed the lead down to three by halftime at 20-17.

Great Bend pulled within one point on the first points of the third quarter at 20-19 before Hays scored the next seven. The eight point lead at 27-19 was their first of four eight point leads in the second half. Each time Great Bend chipped away at the lead. The Panthers got within three at 31-28 with the first points of the fourth quarter and had the next three minutes to pull closer, but could not.

The Indians' only fourth quarter field goal came on a three pointer with just under three minutes remaining for a 35-28 win. Hays made six of their final eight free throws to hold off any charge from the Panthers, winning 41-32.

Hays improves to 1-2 in the victory. Molly Martin scored a career high 12 points, which included three, three point field goals. Great Bend falls to 0-3.

The Indians next game is December 14th when they host Hoisington.

The Tigers enter the contest at 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA, while the Hornets enter at 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA. Tip off is set for 3:30 pm at White Auditorium, which follows the women's contest at 1:30 pm. This game will pit the best scoring defense against the best scoring offense in the MIAA. Fort Hays State not only leads the MIAA in scoring defense, but leads all NCAA levels at 49.0 points per game. The Tigers are the only NCAA men's basketball program in the nation currently allowing less than 50 points per game. Emporia State on the other hand is averaging 84.6 points per game to lead the MIAA. The Hornets have a potent guard combo averaging 44.8 points per game in Tray Buchanan and Jumah'Ri Turner. Buchanan currently ranks second in the nation in scoring average individually, averaging 26.9 points per game, while Turner averages 17.9. Fort Hays State is coming off a big win at Washburn to open MIAA back on Wednesday night. The Ichabods were nationally ranked to open the season and FHSU managed to snap a six-game losing streak to WU that dated back to the 2017-18 season. The Tigers will now be looking for their first 6-0 start to a season since 2013-14, when they started 7-0. The 5-0 start to this season is the best since 2015-16. The Tigers have been using a balanced scoring attack of eight players averaging at least five points per game. Leading that group is&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6468">Jared Vitztum</a>, who averages 11.8 points and 9.6 rebounds per game.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6470">Nyjee Wright</a>&nbsp;(11.2) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6460">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;(10.4) are also averaging double figures in scoring.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6472">Geoff Hamperian</a>&nbsp;(8.4) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6467">Quinten Rock</a>&nbsp;(8.0) are the top scorers off the bench for FHSU. To go along with owning the best scoring defense in the country, the Tigers also lead NCAA Division II in opponent field goal percentage. They are allowing opponents to shoot at just a 34.1 percent rate for the season overall, and the Tigers rank second nationally in opponent 3-point field goal percentage at just 22 percent. The Tigers will be attempting to slow down a Hornet team that leads the MIAA in field goal percentage at 49.9 percent. The Hornets are coming off an 81-70 win over Nebraska-Kearney in their MIAA opener on Thursday night at home. The Tigers enter the contest at 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA, while the Hornets enter at 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA. Tip off is set for 3:30 pm at White Auditorium, which follows the women's contest at 1:30 pm. This game will pit the best scoring defense against the best scoring offense in the MIAA. Fort Hays State not only leads the MIAA in scoring defense, but leads all NCAA levels at 49.0 points per game. The Tigers are the only NCAA men's basketball program in the nation currently allowing less than 50 points per game. Emporia State on the other hand is averaging 84.6 points per game to lead the MIAA. The Hornets have a potent guard combo averaging 44.8 points per game in Tray Buchanan and Jumah'Ri Turner. Buchanan currently ranks second in the nation in scoring average individually, averaging 26.9 points per game, while Turner averages 17.9. Fort Hays State is coming off a big win at Washburn to open MIAA back on Wednesday night. The Ichabods were nationally ranked to open the season and FHSU managed to snap a six-game losing streak to WU that dated back to the 2017-18 season. The Tigers will now be looking for their first 6-0 start to a season since 2013-14, when they started 7-0. The 5-0 start to this season is the best since 2015-16. The Tigers have been using a balanced scoring attack of eight players averaging at least five points per game. Leading that group is&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6468">Jared Vitztum</a>, who averages 11.8 points and 9.6 rebounds per game.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6470">Nyjee Wright</a>&nbsp;(11.2) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6460">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;(10.4) are also averaging double figures in scoring.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6472">Geoff Hamperian</a>&nbsp;(8.4) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6467">Quinten Rock</a>&nbsp;(8.0) are the top scorers off the bench for FHSU. To go along with owning the best scoring defense in the country, the Tigers also lead NCAA Division II in opponent field goal percentage. They are allowing opponents to shoot at just a 34.1 percent rate for the season overall, and the Tigers rank second nationally in opponent 3-point field goal percentage at just 22 percent. The Tigers will be attempting to slow down a Hornet team that leads the MIAA in field goal percentage at 49.9 percent. The Hornets are coming off an 81-70 win over Nebraska-Kearney in their MIAA opener on Thursday night at home. First tip from White Auditorium in Emporia, Kan. is set for 1:30 p.m. After defeating Washburn on the&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/news/2021/12/1/womens-basketball-no-1-tigers-move-to-6-0-after-big-win-in-topeka.aspx">road by 22 on Wednesday</a>&nbsp;and battling Emporia State on Saturday, the Tigers will return to Gross Memorial Coliseum to host No. 21 Nebraska-Kearney next Saturday (Dec. 11). The Tigers have played, and defeated, the Lopers&nbsp;(97 meetings, 58-39), Lady Hornets (88 meetings, 36-52) and Ichabods&nbsp;(85 meetings, 38-47)&nbsp;more than any other team in program history. While the women are one of just 23 undefeated teams remaining in Division II, Fort Hays State is one of just seven DII schools without a loss on the hardwood between both men's and women's teams this season. Others include Indiana (Pa.), Lock Haven, Miles, Minnesota State-Mankato, Pace and Texas A&amp;M-Commerce. The Tigers' current winning streak of six games is tied for the seventh-longest streak to open a season in program history. It's the 10th time the Tigers have opened a season with at least six consecutive wins. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6437">Jaden Hobbs</a>&nbsp;has played in four games against the Lady Hornets and has performed well each time, scoring in double figures four times while averaging 14.5 points and 8.0 assists per night.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6443">Katie Wagner</a>&nbsp;(12.0 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 4.0 apg in two games) and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6438">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>&nbsp;(10.0 points, 4.5 rebounds in two games) also average in double figures when playing ESU. Hollenbeck&nbsp;leads the conference and ranks sixth in the country with a field-goal percentage of 65.3 percent. Wagner's three double-doubles are 21st-most in the nation. She ranks 18th nationally in rebounding (11.7 rpg), 42nd in scoring (18.8 ppg) and 12th in defensive rebounds per game (8.8 drpg). Emporia State leads the all-time series, 52-36, including a 28-11 lead in games played in Emporia. Fort Hays State won the most recent meeting and holds a one-game winning streak in the series. The Tigers also hold a slim 10-9 lead in the series since the start of the 2013-14 season. FHSU is 10-19 against the Lady Hornets under Hobson, including a 1-10 mark on the road. Emporia State has won the last four meetings in Emporia, with the last Tiger win inside White Auditorium coming in January 2015 (1/28/15). The Tigers have defeated Emporia State 10 times since the start of the 2013-14 season. No other school has defeated the Lady Hornets more than seven times during that span (UCM 7, PSU 5, WU 5, UCO 4 UNK 4, NSU 3, MWSU 3). The Lady Hornets have lost 55 games in that span, with FHSU accounting for 18 percent of those losses. The Lady Hornets came into the weekend receiving votes in the coaches poll and ranked 18th in the media poll before falling by just one point to Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday, 59-58. Both of ESU's losses have come at home this season.&nbsp;A loss Saturday would give the Lady Hornets three home losses this season, matching their high mark for defeats inside White Auditorium in a single&nbsp;season since the turn of the century (10-3 in 2018-19, 11-3 in 2001-02).&nbsp;Tre'Zure Jobe leads the conference in scoring, averaging 22.4 points per night.&nbsp;The Lady Hornets average 82.9 points per game, tops in the league and eighth-most in DII. Karsen Schultz grabs a team-best 6.4 rebounds per game, while ESU as a team is being out-rebounded by an average of 3.4 boards per game.
