HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State men's soccer team jumped into the win column on Sunday (Sept. 5), holding on to defeat MSU Denver by a score of 1-0. The Tigers scored in the first half and were able to hold off the Roadrunner attack for the entire second half posting their first clean sheet of the season.

The lone Tiger score came at the 25th&nbsp;minute of action where a cross from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6272">Michael Samuel</a>&nbsp;found the head of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6265">Theo Bennetts</a>, which soared into to the top left corner of the goal. The Tigers outshot the Roadrunners 10-7. The FHSU defense was rock solid and made it so keeper&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6244">Kieran Brown</a>&nbsp;had to only save two shots for his first win of the season.

Next week the Tigers head to Kansas City for a pair of non-conference matches with Maryville (Sept. 8) and Rockhurst (Sept. 12). The match with Maryville on Wednesday will be on neutral ground at Swope Soccer Village, while the contest later in the week is a true road contest at Rockhurst University just a few miles to the west of where the Tigers will play their neutral match.

⚽ Tiger women post second straight shutout at home

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Brady Singer tossed seven scoreless innings and Salvador Perez hit another home run as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 6-0 on Sunday.

Singer (4-9) matched his season high with seven innings and allowed four hits with no walks and struck out six. It was the third time this season that Singer has issued no walks.

“I think throughout the game the command actually got better,” Singer said. “I struggled with my slider early in the game but I figured that out throughout the game. I threw a few changeups that kept them off the other stuff.”

Singer has struggled developing his changeup as a third pitch. But Royals manager Mike Matheny said it’s days like Sunday that might cause him to think he doesn’t need a third pitch.

“That was probably the best fastball he’s had all season,” Matheny said. “The movement and location—he found it and he kept it down. There was only pitch that I remember him climbing the zone. You could tell by some of their reactions how much late movement he had. That’s an example of why a guy gets away from a third pitch."

Perez had his third home run of the series, eighth in the last 11 games and 41st of the season. He’s second in the majors behind Shohei Ohtani.

Dylan Cease (11-7) took the loss. He gave up four runs and four hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out nine.

“I mostly just tip my cap,” Cease said of Perez. “It could have been a little more off the plate, but it was a decent pitch. It’s just a good piece of hitting.”

Perez left little doubt on his home run in the first, blasting it 448 feet to the opposite field. According to Statcast, it was the fifth-longest opposite-field home run since 2015. Perez now has 193 home runs in his career, tied for third with Amos Otis in franchise history.

“Most of us could stand in right field with a fungo and not hit it up there,” Matheny said. “When it came off the bat it just looked different. I don’t know how else to say it. I’m sure glad he’s on our side.”

The three-run homer gave Perez 102 RBIs this year. It was also his 20th homer since the All-Star break. Perez has 22 home runs at home, the most in the majors this season.

Even when Perez grounded out it was productive. With one out and Nicky Lopez on first in the third inning, Perez grounded slowly to third. The throw from Yoan Moncada was low and wasn’t handled by first baseman Gavin Sheets. As it rolled past Sheets, Perez inadvertently kicked it down the line, allowing Lopez to score.

Adalberto Mondesi led off the bottom of the sixth with a single. He then stole second and third before scoring on a Hunter Dozier sacrifice fly to right. Whit Merrifield then singled in Edward Olivares for the Royals’ sixth run.

Royals catcher Cam Gallagher, who left Saturday’s game with left knee inflammation, was placed on the 10-day Injured List. Sebastian Rivero had been called up prior to Saturday’s game in case Perez couldn’t go after taking a ball off the throat Friday night. Taking Gallagher’s roster spot is RHP Tyler Zuber who was recalled from Triple-A Omaha.

The White Sox have Monday off before resuming a six-day road trip Tuesday in Oakland. Chicago has not determined a starter for the first game of the series, while Oakland will send RHP James Kaprielian (7-4, 3.87 ERA) to the mound.

The Royals head to Baltimore to begin a four-game series with the Orioles with a Labor Day matinee. Kris Bubic (4-6, 5.16 ERA) will get the start for Kansas City. Baltimore has not announced a starter.

⚾ Salvy homers again, Singer fires seven shutout innings in Royals' win over White Sox

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Yasmani Grandal went 3 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs as the Chicago White Sox built a big lead and then held off Salvador Perez and the Kansas City Royals 10-7 Saturday night.

Perez hit two homers, including his 40th of the season, and drove in five runs. His homer total is second in the majors — Shohei Ohtani of the Angels hit his 43rd on Saturday night.

Luis Robert homered and tied a career high with four hits for the AL Central-leading White Sox, who led 9-3 in the fifth inning.

Manager Tony La Russa was more impressed with Robert’s defense in center field.

“Some people will say it’s instinctive, but he must have, at an early age, shagged a lot of balls. When the batter is starting to swing he’s already moving."

“Then he’s got the speed. Some of those balls should be in the gap and he’s picking them," he said.

Craig Kimbrel (3-4) got the win in relief. Liam Hendriks earned his 32nd save.

La Russa said it was an easy decision to bring in Kimbrel to start the seventh.

“If somebody gets on base, Perez is up,” he said. “Craig had to be the guy to face him. That was the inning of decision."

“A lot of theater there in that inning. What Salvador did with those two homers made that game a very tough one for us to win," he said..

Daniel Lynch (4-4) allowed six runs in 2.2 innings.

The White Sox hit a pair of long home runs in the first inning. Robert launched a 452-foot drive to left center and Grandal hit a 425-foot shot for a 3-0 lead.

“We feed off each other,” Grandal said of the club’s relentless offense. “We’re definitely hunting out there. We make sure we keep riding that wave as high as we can. Every time we do that, good things happen.”

Chicago scored three more in the third on a wild throw by catcher Cam Gallagher, an RBI single by Grandal and a sacrifice fly from Leury Garcia.

Perez hit a two-run homer in the third. It was the 191st career home run for the All-Star catcher, breaking a tie with Alex Gordon for fourth all-time in franchise history.

Jose Abreu had an RBI double for his 500th career extra-base hit and Grandal had a sacrifice fly in the fourth for an 8-3 lead.

Perez hit his second homer of the game, a three-run drive that cut the deficit to 9-6 in the fifth. He has 12 career multihomer games, six this season.

“I see a great hitter. I see a hitter that has to be talked about as one of, if not the most dangerous hitter in the league,” manager Mike Matheny said. “I see how he’s gone about these at bats, doing it in the big situations. It was one of those days when we thought about giving him a day off. The next thing you know he does something that continues to amaze us.”

Carlos Santana led off the Royals sixth with his 18th home run, his first since July 24.

Royals: Perez, who was hit in the throat with an errant pitch Friday night, originally was scheduled to catch again on Saturday. Matheny said the chest protector was causing him discomfort during warmups so he was switched to designated hitter. Matheny, who played 13 seasons as a catcher, said Perez looked concerned with not being able to catch his breath immediately after getting hit.

Fort Hays State will return home to host the 2021 FHSU Tiger Classic next Friday and Saturday (Sept. 10-11). Action will begin at 10 a.m. on two courts, with the Tigers playing at 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. each day.

Fort Hays State 3, UMary 0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-20) The Tigers took care of business in the weekend finale, leading wire-to-wire in both the first and second sets. After opening up a 13-5 lead in the first frame, FHSU scored seven-straight points to build the advantage to 20-5. Ellis and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6208">Claire Olson</a>&nbsp;combined for back-to-back blocks at the end of the run before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6107">Mykah Eshbaugh</a>&nbsp;dropped in the final kill to seal a 25-10 win in set one. The Tigers hit .313 in the match while holding UMary to a -.011 attack rate. The Tigers hit an astounding .520 in the opening frame thanks to 15 kills and just two errors on 25 swings. Ellis totaled eight kills on 13 attempts while adding five blocks in the win. Tinder also totaled eight kills while adding one block and six digs. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Skylar Thompson set the tone for Kansas State when the quarterback put his left shoulder down and bulled into the end zone for the first of his two touchdown runs as the Wildcats opened the season with a 24-7 win over Stanford on Saturday.

Thompson, who later had a 13-yard TD run, opened the scoring when he knocked cornerback Kyu Blu Kelly to the ground on a 6-yard TD run in the first quarter.

“There’s a lot that went into that touchdown, a lot that people didn't see, and a lot of time spent on my own,” Thompson said. “In the midst of a situation that once seemed very dark and stormy, to see the fruit fall from the tree, to see the sun shine a little bit and to take a deep breath ... It all worked out and everything happened for a reason."

Thompson missed most of last season after he injured his throwing (right) shoulder in the third game. But he returned for his sixth year in the K-State program because of his love of the game and the desire for a better finish, taking advantage of the extra season of eligibility received amid the pandemic.

Deuce Vaughn sprinted 59 yards for a touchdown on and a third-and-13 play. He finished with 124 yards rushing on 13 carries for the Wildcats, who finished last season with a five-game losing streak, and is glad to have back Thompson, who he described as fantastic and smart player.

“He’s unbelievable as a football player and unbelievable as a person," Vaughn said.

Stanford was down 24-0 before Tanner McKee's 14-yard touchdown pass to Brycen Tremayne with 3:16 left on its last offensive snap. The Cardinal, who last year won the last four games of their pandemic-shortened 4-2 season, have played 177 games since last being shut out, a 42-0 loss to Southern Cal on Nov. 4, 2006.

“This game was not indicative of how hard we've played, how hard we’ve practiced and how well we practiced,” David Shaw said after his 11th opener at Stanford's coach. “Disappointing to me that we didn't go out there and execute better."

On the possession before Thompson's first TD, Kelly had an impressive interceptio n in the end zone, leaping and reaching back over Phillip Brooks and then managing to get one foot down inbounds. But Stanford went three-and-out, setting up the two-play TD drive. Thompson found a wide-open Brooks for a 56-yard pass to the 6.

Thompson, who finished 9-of-14 passing for 144 yards and ran 10 times for 33 yards, didn't initially realize that it was Kelly he ran through on his first touchdown.

“Everything happened so fast,” Thompson said. “I didn't even realize it until after the fact, and I kind of smiled about it a little bit.”

There were only 97 offensive snaps in the game — 52 for Stanford and 45 for Kansas State.

“It's kind of refreshing as a defensive coach to see that,” K-State head coach Chris Klieman said.

Stanford: With quarterback Davis Mills now in the NFL, Stanford used both 6-foot-6 sophomore McKee and senior Jack West. McKee finished 15-of-18 passing for 118 yards. West started was 8 of 12 for 76 yards with two interceptions, one pick coming right after completions of 27 and 15 yards. The Cardinal finished with only 233 total yards.

“We can make plays with both quarterbacks, we’ve been doing that in camp,” Tremayne said.

“Some good, some bad for both," Shaw said. "Both guys throughout training camp practiced extremely well.”

Kansas State: The opener was a boost for the Wildcats defense after allowing at least 32 points six times last year, including 45 and 69 points in games over the last month of the season. Klieman was encouraged by the three-man defensive fronts his team has been working on for the past eight months.

The game was initially supposed to be played in Manhattan, but Kansas State agreed to move it to the home of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. The announced crowd for the kickoff classic at AT&amp;T Stadium was 28,668, well below the listed capacity of 80,000.

Stanford: The Cardinal will be back in their home state of California, but will play their sixth consecutive road game dating back to last season, at Southern Cal on Saturday.

🏈 Thompson and K-State open with win over Stanford

OAKLEY - The TMP-Marian Monarchs shook off a bit of a slow start and then cruised to a 31-13 win over the Oakley Plainsmen in their season opener Friday night in Oakley.

The Monarchs (1-0) had great field position all night long but still struggled offensively in the first half. Their first two drivers stalled in Oakley(0-1) territory while Oakley was able to get on the board on their second possession of the game.

Plainsmen quarterback Will Schmidt gave Oakley the lead with just over two minutes left in the first quarter with a five yard touchdown run.

TMP was finally able to get on the board with just under five minutes to play in the first half when quarterback Kade Harris found Andrew Schwartz in the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown and the extra point gave TMP the lead. They never gave it back.

On the ensuing kickoff Harris’ pooch onside kick was recovered by the Monarchs.&nbsp;

Harris capped off a seven play drive with a one-yard touchdown run putting TMP up 14-6 after the extra point.

In the second half Mark Rack picked off Schmidt setting up TMP’s Harris to find Griffin Schumacher on a 23-yard touchdown pass, on fourth down and long, that gave TMP a 21-6 lead.

Jace Wentling added a 30-yard field goal on the next TMP drive to put the Monarchs up 24-6.

With just over three minutes left Rack intercepted his second pass and took in for the 35-yard touchdown putting TMP up 31-6.

Late in the game Oakley got a touchdown run before TMP secured the 31-13 win.

The Monarchs combined to run for 138 yards and Harris finished 8-17 for 95 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Bryce Seib led TMP’s rushing attach with 67 yards on 15 carries.

The Monarchs will travel to Russell Friday for another Mid-continent League contest.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Dallas Keuchel had another rocky outing for the AL Central-leading White Sox, allowing six runs in three innings in Chicago's 7-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

Keuchel, the 2015 AL Cy Young Award winner, has a 7.26 ERA in his past 11 starts after giving up five earned runs, seven hits and two walks with one strikeout. He went one inning and allowed five earned runs in his previous start, then admitted to being "the weakest starter in the rotation for much of the year."

"I think he's searching," White Sox manager Tony La Russa said. "I know he's not going to quit, and he'll figure something out."

Chicago remained 9.5 games ahead of Cleveland for the division lead, and Keuchel is battling to show he's worth a postseason roster spot.

Michael A. Taylor had three RBIs, and Adalberto Mondesi drove in two more for Kansas City. Carlos Hernández (5-1) was solid again, pitching six innings with two runs, five hits, three walks and three strikeouts.

"He's able to throw all four of his pitches and got them going early," Royals manager Mike Matheny said. "He's stayed focused and attacked the strike zone. He continues to take steps forward, and he's getting better."

Hernández has allowed two runs or fewer in seven of eight appearances, including seven starts.

"It's great," Hernández said. "I've just been working every time and attack every hitter."

Kansas City scored the first run of the game on a groundout by Taylor that plated Edward Olivares. Andrew Benintendi tripled in Carlos Santana to give the Royals a 2-0 lead in the second.

In the third, Mondesi hit a two-run single that scored Nicky Lopez and Salvador Perez. Olivares also scored on an error by Luis Robert to make it 5-0 Kansas City. Taylor singled Mondesi in on the next at-bat.

Taylor did it again in the fifth, scoring Perez on a single.

"I think it's big to bounce back against a good team," Taylor said. "With two strikes I was just looking to battle and find a pitch that I can swing at."

The White Sox scored two runs in the sixth on RBIs by Leury Garcia and Gavin Sheets.

Yoan Moncada had a base hit in the third inning, extending his career-best 17-game hitting streak, the longest active run in the majors.

The game started two hours late due to a rain delay.

⚾ Royals get to Keuchel early, top White Sox after two-hour, rain-delayed start

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Wins have been so rare at Kansas over the last decade-plus that it wasn't too surprising when students spilled from the stands and rushed the field to celebrate Lance Leipold's first victory as head coach of the Jayhawks.

Who cares if it came against lower-level South Dakota?

It wasn't easy, either. Jason Bean connected with Lawrence Arnold for their second touchdown of the game, giving the Jayhawks the lead back with 1:12 remaining Friday night, and their rebuilt defense held the Coyotes on downs to preserve a nervy 17-14 victory that brought an end to a 13-game skid dating to Oct. 26, 2019.

“Right now we're not going to get concerned about style points and things like that. We needed to get a win,” Leipold said. “Getting a victory was first and foremost right now and as I said, then we go to the film and work to get better.”

The Coyotes, who trailed 10-0 late in the third quarter, had pulled ahead when Kansas native Travis Theis ran 25 yards for a score with 5:16 to go. But the Jayhawks answered by driving 64 yards in less than four minutes, converting fourth-and-10 along the way and getting some help from a targeting penalty on South Dakota freshman Myles Harden.

Then the touchdown pass to Arnold that set off the wild celebration.

“I feel like it was never in doubt about us coming back,” Arnold said. “There's always momentum changes in the game, it's about how you respond. We never looked at it like we couldn't come back or couldn't do this.”

Bean, the North Texas transfer, also found Arnold for a score late in the second quarter. He finished 17 of 26 for 163 yards while adding 54 yards on the ground. But he didn't get much help from the rest of the offense — Velton Gardner carried 19 times for 21 yards, and the Jayhawks' rebuilt offensive line provided little resistance.

“We didn’t run the ball the way we hoped. I’m not going to make any statements about where we’re at without watching the film,” Leipold said. “To be a better offensive football team, we’re going to have to play better as a unit. But again, this gives us an idea of what we need to work on.”

South Dakota couldn't take advantage of it, though.

The Coyotes, who have beaten Minnesota and Bowling Green over the years, were penalized eight times, went 3 for 13 on third down and 0 for 3 on fourth. Carson Camp was just 10-for-22 passing for 98 yards.

Leipold was hired earlier this year when Les Miles, the latest in a growing list of failed Kansas coaches, resigned following sexual harassment allegations dating to his national championship-winning tenure at LSU.

A longtime Division III coach, Leipold promised to bring along fundamentally sound football, relying on the same formula that produced six lower-level national titles in eight seasons and an impressive turnaround at Buffalo.

Instead, the Jayhawks mostly looked like the same team that hasn't had a winning season in more than a decade.

They went three-and-out on their first three possessions, a streak of ignominy interrupted only by two false start penalties, and by the end of the first quarter had more penalty yards (20) than yards of offense (18). And after taking a 10-0 lead on Bean's TD pass to Arnold and Jacob Borcila's field goal, their meager advantage was quickly wiped out.

South Dakota's first score came when Lawrence made a defender whiff in the defensive backfield and scooted 29 yards late in the third quarter. Then, after the Coyotes stuffed Kansas on fourth-and-inches at their own 46-yard line, Theis took a handoff two plays later 25 yards for a touchdown and their first lead of the night.

The Jayhawks managed to answer down the stretch to avoid an embarrassing start to Leipold's time in Lawrence.

“This is about a program, not a coach,” Leipold said, “and were going to work to build on this, but to see the excitement from the fans and even from the staff members will always be memorable.”

South Dakota gained 165 yards rushing and two touchdowns, but they couldn't sustain drives when it mattered. But at least the Coyotes got to play; they went 1-3 in the spring with five games canceled due to the pandemic.

Kansas nearly paid $450,000 for South Dakota to come into Memorial Stadium and deal it a defeat. It was nevertheless a good barometer for Leipold of just how far his coaching staff needs to go to turn around a downtrodden program. Kansas hasn't won more than three games in a season since 2009, the final year of Mark Mangino's tenure.

(AP) — Wins have been so rare at Kansas over the last decade-plus that it wasn't too surprising when students spilled from the stands and rushed the field to celebrate Lance Leipold's first victory as head coach of the Jayhawks.Who cares if it came against lower-level South Dakota?It wasn't easy, either. Jason Bean connected with Lawrence Arnold for their second touchdown of the game, giving the Jayhawks the lead back with 1:12 remaining Friday night, and their rebuilt defense held the Coyotes on downs to preserve a nervy 17-14 victory that brought an end to a 13-game skid dating to Oct. 26, 2019.“Right now we're not going to get concerned about style points and things like that. We needed to get a win,” Leipold said. “Getting a victory was first and foremost right now and as I said, then we go to the film and work to get better.”The Coyotes, who trailed 10-0 late in the third quarter, had pulled ahead when Kansas native Travis Theis ran 25 yards for a score with 5:16 to go. But the Jayhawks answered by driving 64 yards in less than four minutes, converting fourth-and-10 along the way and getting some help from a targeting penalty on South Dakota freshman Myles Harden.Then the touchdown pass to Arnold that set off the wild celebration.“I feel like it was never in doubt about us coming back,” Arnold said. “There's always momentum changes in the game, it's about how you respond. We never looked at it like we couldn't come back or couldn't do this.”Bean, the North Texas transfer, also found Arnold for a score late in the second quarter. Jaren Kanak scored on a 52 yard run just three plays into the season. A Jack Fields extra point capped the drive for a 7-0 lead. That would be all the points the Indians would muster in the first half. Hays drove to the Blue Aces' seven yard line in the second quarter, but a pair of penalties thwarted the chance to score. The final two possessions of the second quarter started in East territory but never gained traction.

The Indian's defense held East to just 52 total yards in the first half. The Indians recorded six tackles for loss and grabbed an interception in the first twenty-four minutes of the game.

The Indians blew the game open in the third quarter. Hays scored on a Malik Bah 12 yard touchdown run with 7:22 on the clock. Gavin Meyers recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Kanak pushed the lead to 21-0 on a 17 yard run with 7:01 on the clock.

Hays scored two more times in the quarter. Kanak scored on a highlight reel 54 yard run and then hit Jordan Dale for a 98 yard pass and 35-6 lead. The four touchdowns took a total of 6:54 of game time.

East scored their lone touchdown with 54 seconds left in the third quarter for the final 35-6 difference.

Jaren Kanak ran for 240 yards and three scores while throwing for 166 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

The game featured 34 penalties for 285 yards.

The Indians are 1-0 on the season and host Great Bend next week. Wichita East falls to 0-1.

🏃‍♀️ FHSU women finish second at UNK Invitational

HAYS, Kan. - The FHSU women's soccer team won in dominating fashion to open the season on Friday (Sept. 3), taking down Augustana 3-0 at FHSU Soccer Stadium. The Tigers scored two goals in the first half and added a third for good measure in the second half before finishing with a clean sheet.

The Tigers got on the board early as senior&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6228">Zariah Smith</a>&nbsp;put the ball out of the reach of Augustana keeper Bailey Barkus in the top left corner in the eighth minute of action. Not much later, redshirt freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6230">Carly Walker</a>&nbsp;tacked on a header goal off of a nice cross from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6223">Cailey Perkins</a>&nbsp;in the 15th minute. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6233">Alex Hutton</a>&nbsp;added a goal of her own in the 62nd&nbsp;minute on a header that ricocheted off the goalkeeper and into the net off a throw in from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6216">Emily Hutchings</a>. The Vikings had a few good looks later in the half but the Tiger defense and goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6231">Deonna Wellbrock</a>&nbsp;stood tall to post the shutout. The Tigers won the shot battle 13-8 and each team put seven on target.

The Tigers look to remain unbeaten on Sunday (Sept. 5) as the Sioux Falls Cougars come to Hays for the first game of the only men's and women's home doubleheader this season. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.

HAYS, Kan. - The FHSU women's soccer team won in dominating fashion to open the season on Friday (Sept. 3), taking down Augustana 3-0 at FHSU Soccer Stadium. The Tigers scored two goals in the first half and added a third for good measure in the second half before finishing with a clean sheet.The Tigers got on the board early as senior&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6228">Zariah Smith</a>&nbsp;put the ball out of the reach of Augustana keeper Bailey Barkus in the top left corner in the eighth minute of action. Not much later, redshirt freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6230">Carly Walker</a>&nbsp;tacked on a header goal off of a nice cross from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6223">Cailey Perkins</a>&nbsp;in the 15th minute. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6233">Alex Hutton</a>&nbsp;added a goal of her own in the 62nd&nbsp;minute on a header that ricocheted off the goalkeeper and into the net off a throw in from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6216">Emily Hutchings</a>. The Vikings had a few good looks later in the half but the Tiger defense and goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6231">Deonna Wellbrock</a>&nbsp;stood tall to post the shutout. Dustin Armbruster will return as the voice of the Hays High Indians, and Jonathan Zweygardt again will handle play-by-play duties for the TMP-M Monarchs.

Indian games can also be heard on KFIX 96.9, and the Monarchs can be heard on 99.5 KHAZ.

“We’re happy we’ve been able to offer video streaming along with our radio broadcasts," said Gerard Wellbrock, Eagle Radio of Hays sports director. "This upgrade should make that product even better for our listening and viewing public.”

Eagle crews set for upgraded live streams of HHS, TMP-M games

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State and Northwest Missouri State opened the 2021 season with a tight battle, but the No. 4 ranked Bearcats prevailed by a score of 15-7. A late touchdown by NWMSU provided a bit of separation and a hail mary attempt to the endzone by the Tigers was intercepted as time expired.

Field position was key to Northwest Missouri State's success in the first half as it held FHSU scoreless. After the Tigers forced a Bearcat punt on the opening drive, NWMSU punter Mike Hohensee placed a punt perfectly that was downed at the 1-yardline. The Bearcats then forced a safety on Fort Hays State's first offensive play of the game and the two points was all of the scoring for either team in the first quarter.

The Bearcats provided the game's first touchdown in the second quarter on a 3-yard rush by Al McKeller. Tiger fans have seen McKeller before, an All-America transfer running back from University of Indianapolis. The Tigers faced him in the 2018 NCAA Playoffs. McKeller went on to run for a game-best 161 yards on 28 carries. NWMSU led at the half 9-0.

The Tigers finally broke through on the scoreboard in the third quarter. A 44-yard completion from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6146">Chance Fuller</a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6360">Monterio Burchfield</a>&nbsp;put the Tigers in business near midfield, the Fuller found&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6186">Adrian Soto</a>&nbsp;later on the drive for a 36-yard touchdown strike. The Tigers were back within two at 9-7.

The Tigers had a chance to take the lead with just over six minutes to play, but a 50-yard field goal attempt was just off the mark. The Bearcats countered with a 10-play, 67-yard drive to chew up 5:15 on the clock, ended by a Braden Wright touchdown pass to Kaden Davis. But the Tigers remained mathematically alive when&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6173">Jhimon Preston</a>&nbsp;blocked the extra-point attempt. With just 59 seconds to work with, FHSU advanced the ball down to the NWMSU 34 before Fuller had to throw a final prayer to the endzone. Isaiah Nimmers picked off the pass as the clock expired. Quick Hits -Northwest Missouri State had three punts that were either downed or went out of bounds at the 1-yardline. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Triston McKenzie limited Kansas City to a run and two hits over six innings and the Cleveland Indians beat the Royals 4-2 Thursday night.

Owen Miller hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning, plenty of support for McKenzie, who has dominated the Royals throughout his young career.

A day after being activated from the injured list, McKenzie (4-5) showed no ill effects from his recent shoulder fatigue and improved to 3-0 with a 1.57 ERA in six appearances against Kansas City. He struck out six Thursday and has 38 punchouts over 28.2 innings against the AL Central foe.

Cleveland has won 11 straight games against the Royals, the longest winning streak over Kansas City in club history.

Emmanuel Clase pitched the ninth for his 20th save in 24 chances.

Mike Minor (8-12) was dominant for the first four innings, allowing just one hit. Things went south quickly in the fifth. He finished with three runs (two earned) on five hits in five innings.

Hunter Dozier hit a two-out single in the second to give the Royals their first run.

Harold Ramirez led off the fifth reaching on an error by third baseman Emmanuel Rivera. Yu Chang then singled before Miller hit a drive 390 feet into the seats in left field for his fourth home run of the season.

Chang drove in Jose Ramirez with his second single in the eighth inning. Ramirez led off with a walk and advanced to second on a groundout. Chang beat the shift with a sharp single to right.

The Royals had runners on first and second with one out in the eighth, only the second time in the game they had two runners reach base in an inning, but Salvador Perez flew out and Andrew Benintendi grounded out.
