The Tigers moved to 8-0 overall and 3-0 in the MIAA win the win, while the Lopers fell to 3-5 overall and 0-3 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State entered with the best scoring defense in NCAA Division II and will see that average go drop again after holding UNK to just 46 points. The Tigers entered the game allowing opponents just 54.3 points per game and lowered that average to 53.3 in the process. FHSU held UNK to just 23.8 percent shooting in the first half (5-of-21) and caused the Lopers to turn the ball over nine times. UNK entered the game shooting at a 49.9 percent clip for the season, which was best in the MIAA.

The Tigers shot 43.3 percent from the field in the opening frame and outscored UNK 10-2 in points off turnovers. The Tigers held UNK to just six points in both the first 10 minutes and second 10 minutes of the first half. FHSU built a 12-point lead out of the gate with a 16-4 run, then closed the half on a 9-0 run to lead by 20. The lead reached its largest point at 25 points (37-12) when the Tigers started the second half on a 5-0 run that completed a 14-0 run going back to the first half. 🏀 Tough first half defense pushes Tigers to 8-0 start to season

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — It took nearly a decade for Kansas and Missouri to renew the Border War.

It took about 10 minutes for the Jayhawks to turn it into a border rout.

Ochai Agbaji scored 21 points, Christian Braun and Dajuan Harris had 13 apiece, and the eighth-ranked Jayhawks rolled to a 102-65 win over the Tigers on Saturday in the first meeting of the longtime Big 12 rivals as nonconference opponents.

David McCormack added 11 points and Remy Martin 10 for the Jayhawks (8-1), who have won eight of the past nine games in a series that began in 1907 but hadn't been played since the Tigers departed the Big 12 after the 2012 season.

“Did it feel different walking out there? Absolutely,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “There's something about Mizzou and a few others on our schedule, only those guys can bring the type of energy that existed today.”

Javon Pickett led sloppy, poor-shooting Missouri (5-5) with 19 points. DaJuan Gordon had 11 and leading scorer Kobe Brown, hounded all afternoon by the Jayhawks' man-to-man defense, finished with five points and six rebounds.

“I used to watch this game on TV but never really understood it,” Pickett said. “I knew it was a big game, but it was just another game to me when I was younger. It was a great atmosphere, though. Super loud.”

Hundreds of students representing groups of up to 20 each began camping out nearly a week in advance of the game, all angling for the best seat for the renewal of a rivalry that traces its bitter start to the pre-Civil War days.

But while the era of pro-slavery Missouri raiders quarreling with anti-slavery “Jayhawkers” from Kansas is relegated to the history books, the animosity harbored by fans of the Tigers and Jayhawks is still very real — even though the two programs had not played in nearly a decade, since Missouri decided to chase football riches to the SEC.

Its move left the Big 12 on such unsteady footing that Self simply refused to schedule the Tigers anymore.

His stance softened over time, though, and the schools played a 2017 exhibition to raise money for hurricane relief. They later agreed to a six-game series that was delayed a year by the pandemic. But it wasn't until Saturday, with the winter sun shining through the clerestory windows of Allen Fieldhouse, that they finally took to the floor together.

Dozens of former players showed up to watch, lending the game a feeling of nostalgia.

“There is an unspoken level of pride. They've played in these games, watched other teams play in these games,” Agbaji said. “We didn't say much to them but we just gave each other that kind of look, like, ‘Go take care of business.'"

As usual, the 270th meeting of Kansas and Missouri had a bit of everything.

There were vulgar chants from Kansas students and silencing buckets from Pickett and the Tigers' Trevon Brazile. There were alley-oop dunks by McCormack, fast-break slams by Braun and a first-half run by Kansas that included a technical foul on Missouri coach Cuonzo Martin, whose first taste of the Border War was a bitter one.

The Tigers had been waiting 3,577 days to avenge their last heartbreaking loss to Kansas.

They sure didn't put up the same kind of fight Saturday.

The Jayhawks opened with an 11-3 run, pushed their advantage to double digits after about seven minutes, then closed the first half on a 13-2 run, storming up the tunnel and into their locker room with a 49-27 advantage.

“They’re a really good team,” Brown said. “They came out and did what we thought they would do.”

The Jayhawks had no intention of going easy on Missouri in the second half, either.

Agbaji followed his first half-ending 3-pointer with one to start the second, and Harris — a native of Columbia, Missouri — and Remy Martin added two more in quick succession, tipping the lead over 30 after just a few minutes.

Kansas eventually scored on its first nine possessions of the second half before coasting to the finish.

“We haven't heard that in a long time, that amount of passion in here,” Braun said. “Some of those students camped out for a week to watch this. We had to give them something in return. We had to match their passion and energy.”

Missouri didn't compose itself well in a hostile environment. Along with Cuonzo Martin's technical foul, 7-foot-3 center Jordan Wilmore got one for clocking Mitch Lightfoot in the jaw with an elbow midway through the second half.

Kansas scored 22 points off 20 turnovers. It shot 56% from the field and went 14 of 27 from beyond the arc. It won the battle of the boards, second-chance points and fast-break baskets. In other words, it was complete domination.

The Tigers play Utah and the Jayhawks face Stephen F. Austin next Saturday.

&nbsp; HAYS, Kan. - The top-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team stumbled late Saturday afternoon (Dec. 11), falling to No. 17 Nebraska-Kearney 61-56 after a Loper fourth-quarter rally. The Tigers (7-1, 2-1 MIAA) led by as many as 12 midway through the third quarter, but a 14-0 run by the Lopers (8-1, 3-0 MIAA) early in the fourth quarter allowed the visitors to rally for the win.

After the Tiger defense held UNK to less than 30 percent&nbsp;from the floor in the first half (8-of-27, 29.6 percent), the Lopers caught fire out of the locker room. UNK connected on 15-of-23 shots after halftime (65.2 percent), including a blazing-hot 72.7 percent (8-of-11) in the fourth quarter to complete the comeback. Fort Hays State had similar offensive struggles in the first half, but a trio of 3-pointers from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6437">Jaden Hobbs</a>, including one just before the buzzer sounded at halftime, helped the Tigers take a 25-20 lead into the intermission. FHSU hit 11-of-31 (35.5 percent) from the floor over the first 20 minutes while outrebounding the Lopers by five in the first half, 22-17.

The Tigers tried to pull away in the third quarter, hitting 75 percent from the floor (9-of-12), including a 2-of-3 effort from deep to build a double-digit lead. Two buckets from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6438">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>&nbsp;and another Hobbs 3-pointer quickly put the Tigers in front by 10, 32-22, but Kearney answered by scoring the next two baskets. A 3-pointer from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6439">Whitney Randall</a>&nbsp;sparked an 8-2 Tiger run, with Hollenbeck giving the Tigers their largest lead of the afternoon, 40-28, with a traditional 3-point play. That's when the Loper offense came to life, with UNK doubling up the Tigers over the final 14-plus minutes, 33-16. Fort Hays State was up nine at the end of the third quarter after a&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6443">Katie Wagner</a>&nbsp;layup and again built the lead to double figures on the first possession of the fourth quarter with a jumper from Randall. But after missing their first 11 shots from behind the arc, the floodgates finally opened for the Lopers in the fourth when they hit 3-pointers on three of their first four possessions to tie things up at 49. UNK took the lead on the following possession before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6444">Kate Dilsaver</a>&nbsp;ended the run with a 3-pointer to again level the score at 52 with 5:17 to play. The Lopers answered with another bucket, but Dilsaver again tied things up with a nifty layup with 3:18 on the clock. UNK kept things rolling on the other end, scoring on the next two possessions to take the lead for good. Dilsaver added another layup to make it a one-possession game with 95 seconds to go, but the Tigers were unable to close the gap the rest of the way. Fort Hays State finished the game shooting 42.9 percent from the floor (24-of-56), while the Lopers hit 46.0 percent overall (23-of-50). UNK outrebounded the Tigers by 10 in the second half and by five for the game, 35-30. Hobbs led the way with 12 points on her four 3-pointers and had a game-high six assists and four steals. Hollenbeck added 11 points, while Wagner had 10. Randall scored eight and Dilsaver tallied the last seven points for the Tigers, finishing the game 3-of-3 from the floor and 1-of-1 from behind the arc. The Tigers will continue conference play Friday when FHSU hosts Central Oklahoma beginning at 5:30 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HAYS – Both the TMP-Marian boys and girls basketball teams opened
the Mid-Continent League portion of the their season with win over Hill City Friday
at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.

Girls: TMP 59, Hill City 35 The TMP (2-2, 1-0 MCL) girls used a pair of big scoring runs
and senior Sophia Balthazor matched her career-high with 20 points as the
Monarchs knocked off Hill City (0-2, 0-2 MCL) 59-35.

Trailing 3-1, following an early three from Hill City TMP
strung together a 10-0 run capped off by a Balthazor three-pointer to go up 11-3.
TMP led by the 15-8 margin at the end of the first quarter.

Balthazor knocked down back-to-back three pointers to open
the second quarter as TMP stretched the lead to 21-8. Hill City cut the TMP
lead back to nine at 21-12 but TMP was able to add onto their lead and took a
14-point lead into halftime at 30-16.

In the third quarter TMP outscored Hill City 18-7 as they
extended their lead to 48-23 at the end of the third quarter.

An 11-1 fourth quarter run pushed the TMP lead past 30
points and with the running back they went on to the 59-35 victory.

Balthazor finished with four three-pointers and a game-high
20 points. Emilee Lane added 15 points and 10 rebounds for her first
double-double of the season and Kassidi Yost added 11 points.

Boys: TMP 64, Hill City 46 The TMP boys showed off their inside attack in the first
half and used the three-point shot in the second half to knock off Hill City
64-46.

TMP (2-2, 1-0 MCL) opened the first quarter on a 12-4 run
with all 12 points coming from the inside with Gavin Unrein, Jace Wentling and
Dylan Werth all accounting for four points in-a-row.

The Monarchs were able to extend their lead to 18-7 at the
end of the first quarter with all 18 points coming from in close.

Bryce Seib’s first three-pointer of the season was the first
jump shot TMP of the first half as the Monarchs built a 25-8 lead. TMP led
27-13 halftime lead.

Unrein opened the second half with a three-pointer and
Kenton Ginther followed that with nine straight points as the Monarchs built a
38-15 lead. In all the Monarchs combined to hit seven three pointers in the
third quarter and took a 54-27 lead into the fourth quarter.

TMP built a 29-point fourth quarter lead at 59-30 before
Hill City (1-1, 1-1 MCL) strung together a 13-0 run cutting the TMP lead to
59-43.

Luke Rome scored five straight points to end the run as the Monarchs
went on to the 64-46 win.

Five Monarchs scored in double-figures led by a career-high
11 points each from Luke Rome and Kenton Ginther. Bryce Seib, Gavin Unrein and

🤼 FHSU set to host annual Bob Smith Open on Sunday

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Softball announced the signing of Lexi Mohr for the 2023 season. The Brighton, Colorado native is currently a senior at Horizon High School. Mohr was a four-time all-state selection in Colorado, while also earning all-conference first team selections all four years. She has twice been honored as an all-state academic selection as well. In her four years of high school, Mohr compiled a .463 batting average with 125 hits, 83 RBIs, 81 runs, 32 doubles, two triples, and two home runs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hays High School coaches, administrators and families celebrated the Indians' successful 2021 football campaign at a banquet Tuesday.

Hays High finished 8-3, advancing to the final eight in Class 5A, losing to Maize 48-36.

Eagle Radio's Dustin Armbruster, the Voice of the Indians, served as emcee of the event and recognized a long list of individual and team accomplishments both for a single season and all-time in Hays High history.

Hays High also amassed all-time team records, including total yards (4,608), total rushing (3,603) and scoring (428).

Several individual season records also were established in 2021:

Kanak set a school record in rushing yards (1,615) and scoring (142), while Moroni finished third all time in scoring (108). In his senior season, Meyers had the second-best tackling season in school history with 124, edging out his sophomore year total of 121 — good for third on the list.&nbsp;

Iden Baalman finished fifth all time for tackles for a loss in a season with 15, and Jack Fields tied for most extra points made in a season with 39.&nbsp;

All-time Hays High career records were also established:

Kanak finished third all time in rushing yards (2,072), followed by Moroni in fourth (1,869). Kanak also finished third all time in scoring with 216 points.

Meyers established what could be an untouchable record in career tackles with 385 — 131 more than No. 2 in the list. Two-way player — and team MVP as chosen by the players — Gavin Nutting finished fifth all time in career tackles with 192.

Meyers career records also included second for career tackles for loss with 43, second for career sacks with 11 and first in career fumbles forced with seven. Fellow linebacker Dalton Dale finished tied for fourth all time in fumble recoveries with five.

Fields finished second all time for extra points made with 55, as well as second for most consecutive extra points with 29.

Two individual game marks were also set, including the longest play in Hays High history — a 98-yard pass from Kanak to wideout Jordan Dale. Iden Baalmann also finished fifth all time for tackles for a loss in a game with five against Wichita East to start the 2021 campaign.

HAYS HIGH FOOTBALL 2021: A record-setting Indian season

The Hays High and TMP-Marian boys are once again among the top-10 ranked teams in their respective classifications in the latest edition of the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association weekly rankings.

The Indians dropped one spot, to number eight, in this week's 5A rankings despite losing to the number one team in 6A Lawrence Free State in overtime in the championship game of the Hays City Shootout.

TMP lost to both Hays High and Free State and dropped to number seven in class 3A this week.

Kansas State High School Activities Association

As a 1965 graduate, Bill Kimble is easily the most decorated athlete 
to graduate from Hoisington High School. Bill Kimble earned 12 gold 
medals from the KSHSAA State Track Meets in 1963, 1964 and 1965.  In 
each of those three years, he won the gold in the 100-yard and 220-yard 
dashes, the 180-yard hurdles, and the 880-yard relay. He also helped his
 track team win two state titles. Kimble holds the record for the 
100-yard dash with a time of 9.6 seconds (or converted to meters is 10.5
 seconds).  Bill continues to hold the state records for the 100-yard 
and 220-yard dashes.  Bill was also an accomplished football athlete and
 intended to compete for Texas when he experienced some bad luck with 
his trip and therefore returned to Kansas to participate in track and 
football at a junior college before being drafted to Vietnam.

***The
 USD 431 Hoisington Board of Education approved a motion in October to 
rename the track at HHS to “Bill Kimble Track." The Hoisington 
Invitational in April will be renamed the “Bill Kimble Invitational” 
going forward.

Charles "Chuck" Fessenden spent 43 years 
teaching, coaching and inspiring students at Northern Valley High School
 in Almena, Kansas. He served as the head football coach his entire 
career, charting 292 wins and 142 losses, the most all-time 8-player 
football coaching wins in Kansas. During his tenure, his team made the 
state championships seven times and brought home the championship crown 
in three of those games. At one time, his football program had 41 
consecutive wins. Chuck was one of the initial founders of the "Kansas 
8-Man Football Association" and the "8-Man All Star Game."&nbsp; Coach 
Fessenden was also responsible for coaching one state basketball 
championship and winning three state track championships. He was honored
 with multiple awards and recognitions over the course of four decades 
for his coaching of football, basketball, and track. The football field 
at Northern Valley has been named Fessenden Field in his honor.

Cheryl
 Gleason is synonymous with the Kansas Association for Youth (KAY) 
organization as it is built upon service and leadership. Cheryl served 
the students, coaches, sponsors, administrators, and schools of Kansas 
through her leadership as an Assistant Executive Director at the Kansas 
State High School Activities Association from 1989 until her retirement 
in 2021. Although she was the administrator for activities such as 
gymnastics, volleyball, bowling, tennis, swimming and diving and golf, 
what she will always be most remembered for are her years as the KAY 
State Director. Cheryl is the only KAY alum to have served 50 years at 
the KAY Leadership Camp. In 2012, she helped launch KAYAN, the Kansas 
Association for Youth Alumni Network, as an organization that would 
continue the beliefs and mission of the KAY organization. During her 
career, Cheryl served on numerous national committees and was recognized
 for her service with many Hall of Fame inductions.

Pam 
McComas spent 40 years in the Topeka 501 School District, instilling a 
passion for speech, debate and forensics in her students.&nbsp; She coached 
over 170 students to Nationals for 33 consecutive years, coaching five 
national champions and 15 National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) 
All-Americans.&nbsp; In 1999 she was awarded the National Coach of the Year 
by Pi Kappa Delta/Bruno E. Jacob Award and in 2016 McComas received the 
National Federation State High School Association's (NFHS) Citation 
Award for Speech, Debate and Theatre Directors.&nbsp; Her involvement with 
the KSHSAA includes serving on the Board of Directors and Executive 
Board.&nbsp; Beyond the state of Kansas, she has served the NFHS on various 
committees and has co-authored National debate topic papers, in which 
her topic,&nbsp;Water&nbsp;Resources, was selected for the 2021-2022 school year. 
Through the NSDA, McComas has received multiple Chapter Awards and other
 numerous honors.

Barry Mellen spent 34 years as a teacher
 and coach, 29 of those years at Kismet-Southwestern Heights. During his
 girls basketball coaching career, he acquired a record of 785 wins and 
178 losses, a winning percentage of .815. In 1992, his girls' basketball
 team had an undefeated season which led to a state championship. His 
teams won state championship titles twice and were runner ups seven 
times. Barry was a successful volleyball coach as well, making it to the
 state tournament seven years and a girls/boys track coach with three 
state championships. With his years of success came many recognitions 
such as "Coach of the Year" by numerous news outlets and associations 
and even a "Coach of the Decade." At the National Federation State High 
School Association (NFHS) level, Coach Mellen was awarded the "National 
Girls Coach of the Year" for District 5 in 2009. --

The 
honorees were chosen from nominations reviewed by a selection committee.
 To be eligible for the Hall of Fame, an individual must have made an 
unusually outstanding contribution in interscholastic activities, either
 as a student with exceptional talent, or as an adult working with youth
 (such as an activity coach, director or sponsor, an administrator, an 
official or a contributor). Hall of Fame inductees may no longer be 
active in the field for which they are nominated (exception: contributor
 with over 30 years of outstanding service).

Each year schools and
 communities throughout Kansas submit many nominations of individuals 
who have made tremendous contributions in the field of interscholastic 
activities. Hall of Fame information is available on the KSHSAA website 
at www.kshsaa.org. Nomination forms are available by contacting the 
KSHSAA. Any nominations to be considered for induction in 2023 must be 
submitted prior to November 1, 2022.

MANHATTAN, Kansas (AP) — Kam Jones scored 15 points, Oso Ighodaro blocked a potential game-winning shot in the final seconds and Marquette edged Kansas State 64-63 in the Big East/Big 12 Battle on Wednesday night, K-State's first home loss this season.

Kansas State pulled within a point, 64-63 on a Mike McGuirl 3-pointer with 19 seconds left and, after fouling three times in as many seconds after a timeout, the Wildcats got the ball back when Jones missed a free throw and Kaosi Ezeagu grabbed the defensive board.

But after working for a final shot, Ismael Massoud's drive for the winning reverse layup was cleanly rejected by the 6-foot-9 freshman Ighodaro with Tyler Kolek wrapping up the rebound and the Marquette victory.

Justin Lewis scored 14 for Marquette (8-2), which is now 4-1 this season against Power Five opponents.

Mark Smith scored four of K-State's last seven points, finishing with a season-high 17, as the Wildcats (5-3) cut a seven point gap down to one. Massoud added 16 points and Markquis Nowell 11 with 11 assists and eight rebounds.

The Wildcats were playing without Nijel Pack, who missed a second game after suffering a concussion in practice. The sophomore point guard leads K-State in scoring at 15.8 points per game.

He is a third-team selection at forward, following a season that saw him earn GAC/MIAA Offensive Player of the Year honors. Arima was the GAC/MIAA Offensive Player of the Year in 2021, finishing the season with eight goals and eight assists. He produced 21 points in the regular season and finished with 24 after producing three assists in the NCAA Tournament, including helpers on both of Fort Hays State game-winning goals in the tournament. He helped the Tigers make their fifth appearance in the national quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament, all part of run of nine-consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament. He adds this prestigious honor on top of his All-MIAA First Team selection this season. Fort Hays State has now had an AFCA All-America selection in four of the last five seasons since 2016. Budke had a big season for the Tigers with 47 receptions for 620 yards and eight touchdowns. He twice had over 100 receiving yards in a game in 2021 with nine catches for 122 yards as his season high at Missouri Western. He produced four or more receptions in seven of 11 contests and led the Tigers in receiving touchdowns for the season. Budke ranked eighth in the MIAA in receptions per game, all among a top 10 list that only included wide receivers aside from him. He was fourth in the MIAA in receiving touchdowns, only behind a trio of All-MIAA wide receivers that had 10 each. He finished 14th&nbsp;in receiving yards overall in the conference, the best among tight ends. Budke is the first AFCA All-America First Team selection since Nathan Shepherd earned the distinction in 2017 on the defensive line. Shepherd is now in his fourth season with the New York Jets of the National Football League. A year prior to that, defensive end Sie Doe, Jr. was a first-team selection as well. He helped the team to eight shutouts and allow no more than one goal in 18 of 23 matches.
