Hays High played split doubleheader on Friday afternoon and evening at their own Hays City Shootout. The Hays girls team played Northside High School from Fort Smith, Arkansas to open the day. The Hays boys finished the evening with Olathe West.

Northside led wire-to-wire, jumping out to a 6-0 advantage and never leading by less than three. The closest Hays would ever get was 8-5. The Indians trailed 15-6 after one quarter. 

Hays scored the first two points of the second quarter and had the ball three times down 15-8 but couldn't draw closer and went on a 7:40 scoring drought. During that same time Northside went on a 14-0 run for an eventual 29-11 halftime lead.

The Indians doubled their 11 first half points in the third quarter but were still outscored by three. Northside remained undefeated on the season by winning 55-31.

Hays falls to 0-2 on the year while Northside improves to 4-0. The Grizzlies play in the title game Saturday afternoon at 4:15. The Indians try to pick up their first win of the year at 11:00 Saturday morning at Hays Middle School.

Hays and Olathe West were tied twice and swapped the lead twice in the first five minutes of the game. The Indians took the advantage on a pair of free throws and didn't trail for the remainder of the first half. Hays went on a 7-0 run and led 12-6 by the end of the first quarter.

Hays hit their first five shots of the second quarter and used a 13-6 run to build up a 13 point lead at 25-12. It was the first of two leads of that size for the Indians but couldn't add to it. West trimmed the lead down to 29-20 with a three right before the halftime buzzer.

Olathe West continued to chip away at the lead in the third quarter and eventually pulled within three on two separate occasions. The first at 33-30 capped a 18-18 run with 3:50 left in the third quarter. The Owls trailed by three at 36-33 but was never that close again.

Hays ended the third quarter on an 8-3 run. The Indians extended that run into the fourth quarter, scoring the first ten points for a 54-36 advantage and seize control of the game. Hays stayed up by double digits for the final five minutes and win 63-44.

Jace Linenberger recorded a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds. The starters scored all the points in the game for Hays. Carson Kieffer scored 13, Jordan Dale added 10, Noah Weimer 9 and Wesley Oakley 8. Olathe West was led by Harrison Kissling who scored 18 of the bench.

Hays advances to the championship to face the #1 team in 6A, Lawrence Free State.

Hays City Shootout Day 2

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs dropped a pair of semifinal games on
day number two of the Hays City Shootout.

In TMP's first game of the day, Lawrence Free State downed the
TMP boys and Olathe West advanced to the championship game with a win over the TMP
girls.

For the second time in as many games the Monarchs squared
off with a top-ranked team at the Hays City Shootout. This time it was the
top-ranked team in 6A, the Lawrence Free State Firebirds.

After a three-point field goal for the Firebirds opened the
game TMP’s Jace Wentling answered with a field goal and a free throw to tie the
game at three.

But the Firebirds answered with a 16-2 run to end the quarter
to take a 19-5 lead into the second quarter. 

Gavin Unrein opened the second quarter with field goal to
cut the Free State lead to 19-7 but the Firebirds answered with a 10-0 run and
outscored TMP 23-4 to finish out the quarter and led 42-11 at the break.

Free State outscored TMP 22-7 in the third quarter and went
on to the 75-23 win.

Luke Rome’s six points off the bench paced the Monarchs who
dropped to 0-2 to start the season. The Monarchs will take on Great Bend in the
4th place game Saturday. 

The Panthers lost to Hugoton, 62-57, in Friday’s consolation
semifinal matchup.

The TMP Lady Monarchs could not overcome a slow start and
dropped their semifinal matchup with Olathe West 54-28.

The Owls took advantage of a rough start offensively for the
Monarchs and raced out to a 15-3 lead and they were able to keep the Monarchs
at bay the entire contest.

Olathe West led by 12 at 20-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Sophia Balthazor hit her first of two three’s in the first quarter.

She hit her second three in the second quarter but the
Monarchs still found themselves down by double-digits through two quarters at
30-15.

Down 33-15 to open the second half TMP’s Hannah Garcia
knocked down a three-pointer making it 33-18 Olathe West. 

The Owls led by 23 at the end of three quarters at 45-22 and
they never looked back on their way to the 54-28 win.

Emilee Lane finished with a team-high seven points and six
rebounds for TMP.

The Monarchs drop to 1-1 and will take on Hugoton who beat
Great Bend Friday 58-39.

🏀TMP drops a pair of games on day two of Hays City Shootout

NEW YORK (AP) — Christian Braun had a career-high 31 points, Ochai Agbaji scored 23 and No. 8 Kansas emphatically turned back a second-half charge to beat St. John's 95-75 on Friday night in the first basketball game at new UBS Arena.

Senior forward David McCormack, off to a slow start this season, was a force inside with 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Jayhawks (6-1), who have bounced back from a one-point loss to Dayton last week with consecutive double-digit wins.

Remy Martin added 12 points and five assists, and Kansas clamped down on defense late in a game that was part of the annual Big East-Big 12 Battle.

Julian Champagnie scored all but four of his 24 points after halftime for the Red Storm (5-2), who were facing their first ranked opponent of the season in a matchup of programs rich in history that met for the 1952 NCAA title.

Posh Alexander, hobbling at times with a lower right leg injury, and Dylan Addae-Wusu each scored 16 points for St. John's, which was playing playing less than 8 miles from campus.

Kansas, which traveled about 1,270 miles, has more wins in the glimmering new building than the NHL team it houses.

Depleted by COVID-19 absences, the New York Islanders are 0-4-1 in their $1.1 billion home that opened two weeks ago at Belmont Park.

Champagnie hit his first five 3-point attempts in the second half as St. John's whittled a 13-point halftime deficit to three on two occasions.

But then Agbaji responded with a 3 and a putback, and Kansas went on an 11-0 spurt to take command. St. John's went almost five minutes without a point and nearly eight minutes without a basket as the Jayhawks pulled away.

It was their second victory in New York this season after opening with an 87-74 win over Michigan State on Nov. 9 in the Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden.

Kansas: The loss to Dayton on a buzzer-beater in Florida last week dropped the Jayhawks four spots in the AP poll, but they rebounded with a 96-83 win over Iona on Sunday in Orlando. Hall of Fame coach Bill Self is still toying with a deep rotation and demanding much better defense. Kansas has used at least 11 players in all seven games.

St. John's: With a deep roster featuring two stars back from last season's surprising 16-11 squad in Champagnie and Alexander, the Red Storm have legitimate NCAA Tournament aspirations after getting picked fourth in the Big East coaches' poll. But they're still melding five accomplished Division I transfers and a couple of touted freshmen with three returnees, and have barely squeezed by at home lately against some of the weak competition that makes up a soft nonconference schedule. St. John's lost by two at Indiana last month and this was probably its only other opportunity for a significant resume boost outside the Big East.

Kansas assistant Norm Roberts was the head coach at St. John's from 2004-10, going 81-101 in six seasons without an NCAA Tournament berth. ... The only appearance for St. John's in the national championship game was an 80-63 loss to Clyde Lovellette and Kansas in 1952 as Phog Allen coached the Jayhawks to their first of three NCAA titles. ... Kansas redshirt Kyle Cuffe Jr., a freshman guard from Harlem in New York City, is the son of the former St. John's power forward. Kyle Cuffe Sr. played for the Johnnies from 2000-04 and averaged 11.2 points and 7.2 rebounds as a senior. “Definitely supporting my son and Kansas but I bleed red storm,”&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/KyleCuffeSr/status/1466483645695332354?s=20" target="_blank">he posted Thursday on Twitter.</a>&nbsp;... St. John's freshman forward O’Mar Stanley is from Overland Park, Kansas. ... It was the 14th meeting between the schools and first since November 2000 at Madison Square Garden. Kansas has the second-most wins among major college basketball programs, while St. John's ranks ninth.

Kansas: Will host UTEP on Tuesday night in Kansas City, Missouri, before renewing an old border rivalry with Missouri on Dec. 11 at Allen Fieldhouse.

St. John's: Back on campus Sunday night to face New York City foe Fordham in the 89th meeting of a series that dates to 1909. St. John's is 18-0 against the Rams at Carnesecca Arena/Alumni Hall.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs opened the season with a
win, while the boys dropped their opening game of the 39th annual
Gerald Mitchell/Hays City Shootout Thursday at Hays High School.

Both the TMP and Hays High girls offenses got off to a slow
start before the Indians scored the first five points of the game before TMP’s
Hannah Garcia knocked in a three-pointer. Kassidy Yost added a pair of free
throws to cut the Hays High lead to 6-5 at the end of the first quarter.

Hays High (0-1) took a 12-8 lead early in the second quarter
but their offense went cold and TMP (1-0) would take advantage. 

TMP put together a 19-0 run that extended from the second
quarter into the second half and took a 27-12 lead on a Brooke Koenigsman
three-pointer.

Hays High went nearly 10 minutes without a field goal and that
allowed TMP to build a 33-14 lead early in the fourth quarter.

But Hays High would not go away they answered with a 13-2
run over the own and closed the TMP lead to 36-32 but Aliya Seib scored he
second fourth quarter field goal and added a free throw and Emilee Lane chipped
in a pair of free throws helping TMP hold on for the 42-37 win.

Yost scored a team-high 12 points for TMP.

TMP will take on Olathe West in the semifinals Friday after the Owls knocked off Hugoton 48-31.

In the final game of the day the Hays High boys wasted no
time getting their offense going as they raced out to an early double-digit
lead on their way to a 69-36 win over TMP.

The Indians (1-0) opened the game on a 12-2 run and led by 10
three other times in the opening quarter, including at 19-9 after the first.

In the second quarter the TMP (0-1) offense was held to just seven
points as Hays High scored 18 to take a 37-16 halftime lead.

The Monarchs offense was better in the third quarter, total
13 points but Hays High answered with 19 and led 56-29.

The Indians eventually built a 30-point fourth quarter lead
and with the running clock they went on to the 69-36 win.

The Monarchs will play in the 4:45 p.m. boys semifinal game against Lawrence Free State Friday afternoon at Hays High school.

🏀TMP splits with Hays High to open season

The Kansas high school basketball season got underway Thursday in Hays with the 39th Annual Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout. The field contained six teams in 2021. Hays, TMP, Olathe West, Hugoton and Great Bend brought both their girls and boys teams. Lawrence-Free State was represented in the boys bracket and Northside from Fort Smith, Arkansas on the girls side.

Hays High led 5-0 and 12-8 over the game's first eleven minutes. The Indians then went on a long scoring drought while TMP jumped out to the lead with a 19-0 run that lasted into the second half. Hays went scoreless for 9:58 and 14:07 between field goals.

The offensive woes continued for Hays until the fourth quarter. TMP built their lead to a game high 19 at 33-14 with the first basket of the final quarter. The Indians finally found momentum on offense using a 21-5 run to get within three points at 38-35 with 26 seconds left. TMP though made their last four free throws to hold off the late Hays High surge 42-37.

Hays was led in scoring by Aleyia Ruder with 11 points all from the fourth quarter. The Indians fall to 0-1. #7-3A TMP improves to 1-0.

Hays jumped out to four different ten point leads in the first quarter and led 19-9 after the first eight minutes. The game was tied once at two points when the Indians hit four straight baskets for their first double digit lead at 12-2.

The Indians continued to build the lead through the second quarter outscoring TMP 18-7 for a 37-16 lead at halftime.&nbsp;

Hays was never threatened in the second half building a lead as high as 30 in the fourth quarter to start the continuous clock.

Hays shot 52% for the game and made nine three pointers. Jace Linenberger led the Indians with 18 points. He was the only player for Hays with double figures. Overall twelve players entered the game for the Indians and eleven of them scored.

INDIANAPOLIS - Fort Hays State advanced to the National Quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament with a 3-2 comeback victory over Lake Erie in extra time on Thursday (Dec. 2) in the Round of 16.&nbsp;The No. 6 seeded Tigers trailed 2-0 to the No. 2 seeded Storm before putting together a late rally in the final 25 minutes of regulation to force overtime. The Tigers moved to 15-5-2 overall, while the Storm finish their year at 16-4-1 overall. In the first half Lake Erie netted two goals in the 10th&nbsp;and 38th&nbsp;minutes, both by Daniel Utgaard, to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room. The Tigers had put together several scoring chances in the match and finally broke through late in the second half. The Tigers moved to 5-0 overall and start conference play at 1-0, knocking off a team that started the season ranked No. 11 in the nation. Fort Hays State continued its recipe of holding opponents under 60 points as Washburn came close with 58. The Tigers entered the game leading the nation in scoring defense at 46.8 points per game and their average remains underneath 50 points per game, right at 49 per game. The win snapped Washburn's six-game win streak against the Tigers that dated back to the 2017-18 season. It was FHSU's first win in Topeka since the 2016-17 season.

Though Washburn opened the game on a 6-0 run, the Tigers clawed their way back to tie the game at 14-14 at the 12:36 mark of the first half and then took their first lead of the game, 17-14, on a&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6460">Kaleb Hammeke</a>&nbsp;3-point field goal in the left corner. It capped a quick 7-0 burst by the Tigers. With Washburn getting the first bucket of the game, it snapped Fort Hays State's streak of not trailing for four consecutive games. TOPEKA, Kan. - Five points in the first 52 seconds from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6439">Whitney Randall</a>&nbsp;helped the No. 1 Fort Hays State women's basketball team cruise to a 72-50 win over Washburn in Wednesday's conference opener. The Tigers (6-0, 1-0 MIAA) never trailed in the contest, leading wire-to-wire for the third time this season.

It took the Tigers just over three minutes to build a double-digit lead with the Tigers scoring on their first five possessions. Randall hit a stick-back layup after&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6438">Olivia Hollenbeck</a>&nbsp;won the opening tip before the senior buried a 3-pointer in transition the next time down the floor. The Tigers are 9-6 in MIAA openers (9-4 under Hobson) and 6-9 in their first road MIAA game of a season (6-7 under Hobson) since joining the conference in the 2006. KANSAS CITY -&nbsp;The Kansas City Current acquired U.S. Women’s National Team midfielder Samantha ‘Sam’ Mewis in a trade with the North Carolina Courage.

In exchange, North Carolina will receive defender Kiki Pickett and the Current’s natural first round pick in the 2022 NWSL Draft. In a separate transaction related to this trade, the Courage will obtain the discovery rights of Malia Berkely from the Current in exchange for the Courage’s natural first round pick in the draft.

“Sam Mewis has proven herself as one of the best soccer players in the world,” said Co-Owner Angie Long. “It’s not a coincidence that everywhere she’s played throughout her career, titles have followed. She’s a leader on and off the field and we are thrilled to have her join the Current as a key contributor to help bring NWSL Championships to Kansas City.”

With a World Cup Championship, three NWSL titles, a NCAA Championship and a FA Cup Championship, along with numerous individual accolades, Mewis joins the Current as one of the most decorated players in women’s soccer, both domestically and internationally.

“I’m really excited to start this new chapter with Kansas City,” said Mewis. “I know how much the city has embraced our sport and I can’t wait to meet the fans. I’m honored to be part of what this group is doing and I’m really looking forward to getting started with my new teammates. At UCLA, Mewis scored 31 goals in 87 NCAA appearances. She was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman team in 2011, helped the Bruins to the 2013 NCAA National Championship and capped off her collegiate career by earning the 2015 Honda Sports Award, given annually to the best female collegiate soccer player.&nbsp;

A member of the U.S. Youth National Teams at the 2008 U-17 World Cup, the 2010 U-20 World Cup and the 2012 U-20 World Cup, she made her senior team debut at the age of 21 against Sweden in the 2014 Algarve Cup.&nbsp;

After traveling to Rio as an alternate for the 2016 Olympics, Mewis played in every match for the U.S. in 2017 and was a member of the 2019 FIFA World Cup Champion team in France. Mewis appeared in eight of the nine U.S. games in 2020 and was named the U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year.

Selected fourth overall in the 2015 NWSL Draft, Mewis made an immediate impact for the Western New York Flash. She started every game that season and was named a finalist for the 2015 Rookie of the Year award. In 2016, Mewis scored two playoff goals and helped the Flash win the 2016 NWSL Championship.

With the Flash and Courage, Mewis won three NWSL Championships (2016, 2018, 2019) and appeared in four straight title matches. She was named to the NWSL Best XI and was a NWSL MVP Finalist in 2017.&nbsp; Mewis has 21 career goals in 92 regular season appearances, plus another four goals in eight playoff appearances.&nbsp;

Following the 2020 NWSL Fall Series, Mewis signed to play in England with Manchester City. Making 29 appearances for City, she scored 14 goals and was named to PFA Team of the Year. Mewis added another title to her resumé during her time overseas. She scored a goal in each of the semi-finals and finals as she helped her side to the 2020 FA Cup Championship.

Kiki Pickett joins the Courage after being selected with the first pick for Kansas City in the 2020 NWSL Draft. After finishing her senior season at Stanford, Pickett joined Kansas City in June and made her professional debut against the Washington Spirit on June 26. She played in 16 games for KC, starting in 13. She tied for second on the team in tackles (36), possession won (119) and crosses blocked (4). Collegiately, Pickett was a two-time NCAA Champion with Stanford (2017, 2019) and was named the 2020 Pac-12 Defender of the Year.

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team found itself atop the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll for the second week in a row, announced Tuesday by the coaches association. The Tigers, now 5-0 on the year, also held on to the No. 2 slot in the latest D2SIDA Media poll, also released Tuesday morning. This is the fourth DII coaches poll release in which the Tigers are ranked first in the country. FHSU&nbsp;also spent two weeks ranked atop the national polls in the 2015-16 season (12/8/15, 12/15/15). The Tigers are now 5-1 in games as the top-ranked team in the country and 116-31 all-time when ranked in the coaches poll. Fort Hays State picked up two additional first-place votes from the previous release, coming in on top of 16 of 22 ballots submitted this week. The Tigers increased their point total by 15, up to 537 points, and increased its lead over second-ranked Lubbock Christian to 31 points. Two other MIAA programs are ranked in the coaches poll, including 5-1 Nebraska-Kearney sitting in 21st and 4-3 Central Missouri coming in 25th for the second week in a row. Emporia State, Saturday's opponent, is just outside the Top 25, sitting atop the schools listed in the also receiving votes category. The Tigers added four points to its total in the media poll, up to 368 points this week. FHSU is 19 points behind top-ranked Alaska-Anchorage and 10 points ahead of third-ranked Texas A&amp;M-Commerce. The Tigers racked up a pair of first-place votes in the media poll for the second week in a row.
