LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas added an additional year to football coach Lance Leipold's contract Thursday that will keep him on the sideline through the 2027 season, a reward for a two-win first year that raised hopes for a long-awaited turnaround.

Leipold was hired last year, shortly after the Jayhawks parted with Les Miles following a winless season and amid sexual harassment allegations from his time at LSU. And despite never having an opportunity to put together a full recruiting class or working with his team in spring football, Leipold's progress was evident in a late-season upset of Texas.

Leipold's original contract was a $16.5 million, six-year pact that paid him $2.2 million in its initial season with annual $200,000 increases. He also would earn $50,000 for finishing in the Top 25, earning Big 12 coach of the year or winning seven regular-season games; $75,000 for reaching a certain academic benchmark; $100,000 for qualifying for a bowl game; and $500,000 if the Jayhawks would play for a national title.

“This is a statement about our exceptional confidence in Lance, his outstanding staff and the unlimited potential of Kansas football,” said Jayhawks athletic director Travis Goff, who was hired shortly before he chose Leipold as his coach.

“When you consider he and his staff did not arrive until May (2021), and therefore did not have a chance to coach our guys until August last year, the 2021 season could be considered ‘Year 0,’" Goff explained. “Given the progress that’s been made both on and off the field in such short order, I could not feel more strongly about the trajectory of this program.”

Kansas opens this season Friday night against Tennessee Tech.

Leipold was a popular pick among Kansas fans because of his Midwest pedigree, small-town roots and ability to build a program. He won six Division III national championships in eight seasons at Wisconsin-Whitewater, then proved he could win at the Division I level when he spent three years rebuilding Buffalo, followed by three straight bowl games.

Along with upsetting the Longhorns last season, the Jayhawks put a scare into Oklahoma and lost one-possession games to TCU and West Virginia — further evidence that the culture Leipold was trying to build had taken root.

Earlier this week, Leipold showed his affinity for the Jayhawks by announcing an endowment fund established along with his wife to provide financial support for an on-field graduate assistant for the football program.

“It shows, I think, our commitment and our appreciation,” Leipold said. “We're going to need a lot from everybody and you have to do it yourself sometimes. We've tried to do certain things at each stop because we think it's important. The timing of the year, that didn't play a part in our thought process at all. We're just happy we could do it.”

CHICAGO (AP) — Lance Lynn pitched four-hit ball through seven innings, Elvis Andrus hit a tiebreaking home run in the fifth and the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 Wednesday night to snap a five-game losing streak.

Lynn (4-5), who was reinstated from the bereavement list before the game, didn’t walk a batter and struck out eight for the fifth time this season. The Royals had scored 24 runs in their previous two games.

Chicago (64-66) won for the first time under bench coach Miguel Cairo, who served his second game as acting manager while Tony La Russa is on indefinite leave while he undergoes tests performed by his personal doctors in Arizona to address an unspecified health issue.

“After the last out, he always says, ’twenty-seven outs,’ “ Cairo said. “ ‘And until that last out, you cannot feel comfortable until they get that last out.’

“That’s the feeling. Big deep breath, and let it go and do it again (Thursday).”

The Royals (53-78) lost for the third time in five games. Rookie Bobby Witt hit his 19th home run off Lynn in the fourth, a shot to center that traveled an estimated 441 feet.

Witt’s homer was the 58th hit by a Royals rookie this season, extending the franchise record of 56 set in their inaugural season in 1969.

The Royals didn’t score again until two out in the ninth on a triple by Michael A. Taylor and a single by Michael Massey. Chicago’s Liam Hendriks struck out Hunter Dozier to earn his 29th save.

“Obviously everybody is a little down when you lose your manager,” Lynn said. “You hope that everything is good and everything checks out good. He has some stuff he has to take care of, and we have to do our part to stay in this race.”

Lynn retired the first 10 batters before Witt’s homer, and he immediately loaded the bases before coaxing Dozier to ground into an inning-ending double play.

That turned out to be the break the Sox needed, as AJ Pollock led off the bottom of the fourth by poking a low, outside pitch over the right field fence to tie the game.

Lynn is 2-0 with a 1.82 ERA in his last four starts.

Royals left-hander Kris Bubic (2-10) threw 26 pitches in the first and loaded the bases before getting Pollock to pop to first and Yasmani Grandal to line out to right. Grandal returned from his rehab assignment at Triple-A Charlotte and was reinstated from the 10-day injured list before the game.

Bubic walked three of the first seven batters he faced, but was undone by the homers. Andrus hit his home run two pitches after missing a pitch on a hit-and-run play that resulted in Romy Gonzalez getting thrown out at second.

Bubic has allowed four homers in his last two starts after pitching 24 consecutive innings without allowing a homer. He is 0-4 lifetime against the Sox, despite posting a 2.76 ERA in nine games.

“He made good pitches when he had to get us out of trouble,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “He was in a mess from the top, but made the pitches, and guys made the plays behind him.”

The Sox added two insurance runs in the seventh on a grounder by Andrus and a two-out single by Jose Abreu.

Andrus became the 13th Sox player to bat leadoff, tying a franchise record set in 1976.

“It was a good game for us to go out there and compete and do it for (La Russa), knowing that every time we play good, he’s going to feel a lot better,” Andrus said.

Royals: C Salvador Perez (back tightness) was scratched from the lineup and is listed as day to day. “The longer he sat around after his pregame routine, it tightened up,” Matheny said.

White Sox: CF Luis Robert (left wrist soreness) missed his fifth consecutive start and remains day to day, Cairo said. Robert entered in the ninth as a defensive replacement.

White Sox: To make room for Lynn and Grandal, LHP Tanner Banks and C Carlos Perez were optioned to Charlotte.

Royals: Will start RHP Daniel Mengden (0-0, 2.08) to face Chicago in Thursday’s series finale. Mengden will be promoted from Triple-A Omaha, where he is 6-5 with a 4.55 ERA in 21 appearances.

White Sox: Will start RHP Johnny Cueto (6-6, 2.98). Cueto allowed a season-high seven runs in five innings Friday in a loss to the Diamondbacks.

The athletic accomplishments coming out of Claflin from 1994 to 1997 remain unmatched in the state history books. In that stretch, Jackie Stiles set single game, season, and career basketball scoring records that stand to this day. On the track, her 14 individual gold medals remain an all-time best in Kansas. 

In 2002, Stiles' rise to the WNBA was detailed in a children's book called "Jackie Stiles: Gym Dandy." Earlier this year, actor, director and filmmaker Brent Huff took the story of her life a step farther. On March 1, his documentary "The Jackie Stiles Story" premiered in Springfield, Mo., where Stiles once set the NCAA scoring record for the Southwest Missouri State-turned Missouri State Bears. As of Aug. 30, the film is available on several streaming platforms, including Amazon Prime and Apple TV. 

Stiles first heard from Huff out of the blue approximately three years ago. She was skeptical about the project at first.

"He sent me some things he'd done," Stiles said. "He'd done a 30-for-30 and I was very impressed. Then when he came and did his first interview with me, which was in Springfield, I was just getting ready to leave my job at Missouri State to take my job at Oklahoma, so it was a crazy time. We sat down and did our first interview. I knew right away my story was in good hands because he knew more about my life than I even knew."

Stiles helped Huff get in touch with former coaches and acquaintances, including Clint Kinnamon, who coached Stiles for three varsity seasons in Claflin before going on to win several state titles at St. John, and Gregg Webb, Stiles' coach her senior season.

The film features many of the stories that gave Stiles legend-status in the sports world, and it features footage of her years in Claflin, Missouri, and playing for the WNBA's Portland Fire.

"It was so fun being a part of the making of the film because I got to relive so many of those memories," she said. "It actually premiered March 1, and that was actually when I broke the record a lot of years ago. I had not seen it yet. He wanted to surprise me, so I got to see it when the public saw it in Springfield. Talk about nerve wracking to watch your life on the big screen. 

"I was blown away by his work and it was fun reliving those memories. It was just an incredible moment getting to share it with so many people that made it possible. You don't accomplish something like that unless you had incredible people surrounding you, and I've been fortunate to have that my whole career."

Stiles became the first NCAA Div. I women's player to reach 1,000 points in a single season, also setting the career scoring record with 3,393 points, a record that stood for 16 years. Stiles later earned WNBA Rookie of the Year honors.

Len Dawson tribute at Chiefs Hall of Honor Thursday

CHICAGO (AP) — Rookie Nick Pratto hit two home runs to highlight a career-high four-hit performance and the Kansas City Royals sent the Chicago White Sox to their fifth straight loss, 9-7 on Tuesday night.

White Sox manager Tony La Russa missed the game because of an unspecified medical issue. The team said the 77-year-old Hall of Famer was out on the recommendation of his doctors and would undergo further testing Wednesday.

La Russa’s absence was announced about one hour before the first pitch. He showed no signs of health trouble during his pregame session with reporters. Bench coach Miguel Cairo took over as Chicago fell for the 10th time in its last 12 games since moving to a season-high five games over .500 on Aug. 16.

“We’re going to find out (Wednesday) what is going on, and hopefully he’s going to be fine and he’s back (Wednesday) to do his duties,” Cairo said. “We are going to keep him in our thoughts and hopefully everything is fine.”

Gavin Sheets homered twice and drove in five runs for the White Sox.

“It was weird,” Sheets said of La Russa’s sudden departure. “We didn’t have much of a heads up. I don’t know all the details. We’re obviously praying for him, praying for a full recovery.”

Salvador Perez and Michael A. Taylor each homered and drove in three runs for the Royals. Pratto added a double and also had three RBIs.

Pratto hit solo home runs in each of his first two at-bats against Lucas Giolito (10-8), and his single off reliever Tanner Banks sparked a two-run sixth. Pratto hit a ground-rule double off Jake Diekman to score Ryan O’Hearn in the seventh.

Pratto is 8 for 17 with four doubles, three homers and 10 RBIs in his last four games. This marked the first multi-homer game of Pratto’s career.

“I’m just focusing more on what I want to go after and making better decisions in the box,” Pratto said. “That’s the essence of it. I’m definitely making fewer mistakes.”

Perez went 3 for 3 against Giolito, raising his career batting average against him to .419 (13 for 31) with three homers and 10 RBIs. Perez’s two-run, opposite-field drive to right extended the Royals’ lead to 3-0 in the third, and his RBI single in the fifth made it 5-0.

“We face (Giolito) a lot,” Perez said. “I’m not afraid to swing. If I hit a homer like that, I won’t be afraid to swing at that pitch. I’m super aggressive sometimes.”

Perez is batting .448 (13 for 29) with two homers and nine RBIs in his last seven games.

The White Sox chased starter Brady Singer with four runs in the fifth, capped by a three-run homer from Sheets. Singer had a 1.37 ERA in his last four starts prior to Tuesday.

Sheets hit a two-run homer in the ninth for his second career multi-homer game.

“We know there’s a sense of urgency,” Sheets said after the White Sox fell six games behind Cleveland in the AL Central. “This is the final sprint, 33 games left and we got to go.”

Jose Cuas (3-2) relieved Singer and pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win.

Eloy Jimenez, whose RBI single preceded Sheets’ homer, led off the seventh with a homer against Carlos Hernandez.

⚽ HHS falls to Garden City in opener

WICHITA - The Hays Larks Hunter Rossen has been added to the NBC World Series All-America Team.

Rossen collected 12 hits, two of the home runs, two triples and four doubles in the Larks run to the title game.&nbsp;

NBC World Series director Kevin Jenks says Rossen's original omission was an oversight.

"We overlooked the accomplishments of Hunter Rosson of the
Hays Larks during the 2022 NBC World Series. He was a dynamic defensive weapon
at second base and in right field, but his offensive numbers were more
impressive."

Hunter Rosson has been added as an All-American utility
player. He joins teammates Brady Rose and Leo Jiminian who are also on the All-America team.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs wanted to get younger around quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the rest of their veteran core.

They couldn't have done it much better through the draft.

The Chiefs selected 10 players in April, their most in 14 years, and all but one made the final cutdown Tuesday for teams to reach the 53-man limit for the regular season. Some of them, such as first-rounders Trent McDuffie and George Karlaftis, were locks from the moment their names were read while others played their way onto a perennial Super Bowl contender.

That includes two seventh-round picks — the time of the draft when teams are typically throwing darts at the board in the hopes of landing a hidden gem. Defensive back Jaylen Watson and running back Isiah Pacheco made the team while safety Nazeeh Johnson, a candidate for the practice squad, was the lone draft pick to be cut.

McDuffie, who will start at cornerback, and Karlaftis, who could start at defensive end in the opener Sept. 11 at Arizona, join Watson in a young defense. Second-round pick Bryan Cook made the team at safety, third-round pick Leo Chenal carved out a role at linebacker and fourth-rounder Joshua Williams survived the cut at cornerback.

“Especially with the young guys, those guys — you can see the scheme is starting to click for them,” said linebacker Nick Bolton, the second-year pro who has taken over calling plays in the middle of the Kansas City defense.

“They're playing a whole lot faster. They're communicating well. Those young guys, they're doing a hell of a job,” Bolton said, “and the vets are just helping them. We have open communication with the young guys and they're doing their best.”

Wide receiver Skyy Moore, the Chiefs' other second-round pick, will be counted upon heavily to help overcome the loss of Tyreek Hill in the passing game. And the one rookie that appeared to be on the fence after a rough training camp, fifth-round pick Darian Kinnard, was kept around as a developmental backup on the offensive line.

Suddenly, a team that had grown old during a streak of six straight AFC West titles is among the youngest in the league.

“I've never gotten caught up in how young or how old guys are. As long as they can play, I'm good,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. "I like this group. I like the way they went about business up in St. Joseph (at training camp) and then down here, we didn't have a big letdown when we moved back, which can happen with the young guys.

“It's a tribute to the veteran guys and also the scouting department for bringing these guys in.”

The Chiefs did keep a couple of intriguing veterans on the roster.

Ronald Jones II was largely an afterthought throughout much of training camp, often working with the third-string offense in team drills. But after Derrick Gore was placed on injured reserve, Jones proceeded to run for 53 yards on just eight carries in the Chiefs' preseason finale against Green Bay, and that was enough to earn a spot on the roster.

“I thought RoJo did a nice job down the stretch,” Reid said. “We know what he's capable of. It's a matter of him being comfortable in the offense. It looked like he was starting to get it down the stretch. He's done a good job.”

The news on cutdown day wasn't as good for Josh Gordon, the once-elite wide receiver that has spent most of the past year trying to rebuild his career in Kansas City. The Chiefs can't replace Hill's explosive speed, but they did provide Mahomes with plenty of new playmakers to complement TE Travis Kelce. They signed JuJu Smith-Schuster away from Pittsburgh and Marquez Valdes-Scantling away from Green Bay and used a second-round pick on Skyy Moore of Western Michigan.

“We’re going to be different,” Mahomes said, "but I think we’ll still be able to go out there and have a ton of success.”

Maybe, but it's not going to be easy for the Chiefs to host a fifth consecutive AFC championship game. Aside from playing in the toughest division in football, where all four teams have legitimate playoff aspirations, the Chiefs also face the AFC South and NFC West along with the Bills, Buccaneers and Bengals.

Nobody has had more passing yards, completions and TD throws in his first two years in the NFL than Herbert, and he could take a big leap in production this season now that he's grown more comfortable in the Chargers offense.

“He’s just a lot looser than usual. He’s just a lot more comfortable. When you come in year one, kind of shy, don’t want to talk a lot,” wide receiver Mike Williams said. “But now, he’s taken control and been himself.”

The Chargers' significant defensive upgrades can only help Herbert's burgeoning confidence.

“I’m really excited for this team. I think we are miles ahead of where we were at this point last year,” said Herbert, who threw for a franchise-record 5,014 yards and had nine 300-yard passing games last season.

Wilson is the Broncos' 11th starting quarterback since Peyton Manning retired, and the new transplant has huddled aplenty with the Hall of Famer who still lives in Denver and was a frequent visitor at training camp.

"We've been talking a lot,” Wilson said. “Since I’ve gotten here, he’s kind of taken me under his wing in a beautiful way. (Peyton’s wife) Ashley (Manning) has taken ‘Ci’ (Ciara) under her wing in helping with thoughts, schools, this, that and where to eat.

“The thing that Peyton and I both love is football. We can spend all day watching football together,” Wilson added. “It’s fun to be able to be around arguably the world’s greatest who has ever played the game at that position.”

And one who's been through what Wilson is about to experience.

HAYS -&nbsp;The Hays High girls’ golf team easily won their first tournament of the season, taking their own Hays High Invitational by 67 strokes Monday afternoon at the Smoky Hill Country Club. 

The Indians shot a 323. Dodge City finished a distant second with a 390.

Hays placed six in the top-10 lead by Jaycee Oakley who won the individual title with a 6-over-par 75. Abbie Norris finished third with an 81, Katie Dinkel fourth with an 83 and Lily Garrison fifth with an 84. 

Mikayla Rome led three TMP-Marian golfers with a 95 and placed 11th.

Hays is at the Salina Central Invitational on Tuesday, September 5th.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Fort Hays State men's soccer team fell to UC-Colorado Springs on Sunday by a score of 2-0. The Mountain Lions scored twice in the first thirty minutes of the match and played tight defense to keep the Tigers from any hope of a comeback. The No. 7 ranked Tigers fall to 1-1, while the Mountain Lions improve to 1-0-1.

UC-Colorado Springs jumped ahead early, finding the net in the 17th&nbsp;minute on a sharp strike from Lars Walczyk. Ten minutes later, the Mountain Lions scored again off a loose ball in the box struck by Jack Souder. The Mountain Lions outshot the Tigers 11-3 in the first half and put four on target.

The Tigers recorded only three more shots in the second half and were unable to place any shots on goal throughout the contest. UCCS won the shot battle 19-6 overall and were able to put seven on target. FHSU keeper&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6644">Kieran Brown</a>&nbsp;tallied five saves in the match.

The Tigers return to action next week when they face Rockhurst at home on Thursday (Sep. 1). They will travel back to the west to take on MSU Denver on Sunday (Sep. 4).
