HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's soccer team won 1-0 over Northwestern Oklahoma State on Monday. The Tigers scored on a corner kick in the first half to take the lead and the defense kept the Rangers out of shooting position to secure the win and their third shutout of the season. FHSU improved to 3-0-1 on the year and NWOSU took its first loss of the year falling to 2-1-1. Fort Hays State made its presence known on offense in the first half taking 11 shots and placing three on goal. The game-winning goal came from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6678">Gracen Chaney</a>&nbsp;as she expertly bent a corner kick between the posts where it bounced off of the keeper's mitts into the net. The Tiger defense locked down the Rangers holding them to only three shots in the first half with none of them on target. FHSU finished with 17 shots, putting five on target, while NWOSU managed six shots with two placed on goal. Keeper&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6693">Isabel Robben</a>&nbsp;picked up a pair of saves in her third shutout effort of the season and Rachel Brown managed four for the Rangers. defensive end Lonnie Phelps Jr. was named the Big 12 Conference Defensive
Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. Phelps made his
presence known in his KU debut with 7 tackles, 3.0 sacks and 4.0
tackles-for-loss.

Phelps, a transfer from the University of Miami (OH), posted the
most sacks by a Jayhawk since 2016, while his 4.0 tackles-for-loss were the
most since 2017.

Phelps led a defensive unit that accounted for 12.0
tackles-for-loss, 5.0 sacks, and limited Tennessee Tech to 97 passing yards and
190 total yards of offense. The last time the Jayhawk defense kept an opponent
under 100 yards of passing and under 200 yards of total offense came on Sept.
4, 2010 against North Dakota State.

According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), Phelps graded out as a
96.4, which is the highest among defensive ends in the country during week one.
Phelps’ 3.0 sacks are tied for the second most in college football this season.

Phelps becomes the first Jayhawk to win Big 12 Defensive Player
of the Week honors since Joe Dineen on November 12, 2018 and the first Kansas
defensive end to earn the award since November 19, 2016 (Dorance Armstrong
Jr.).

The Jayhawks will
open Big 12 play on September 10, when the Jayhawks travel to Morgantown,
W.Va., to take on the West Virginia Mountaineers. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.
CT on ESPN+.

FHSU improved to 2-1-1 overall, while MSU-Denver took their first loss and also now sits at 2-1-1. The Tigers hopped on the attack quickly in the first half as they took nine shots and placed seven on goal. Smith put the Tigers on the board when he received a long pass from&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7069">Inigo Jimenez</a>&nbsp;and chipped it past the keeper in the 24th&nbsp;minute.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6656">Anders Sandsto</a>&nbsp;was also credited with an assist on the play. ⚽ Smith scores twice in debut as Tiger men upend Roadrunners

DETROIT (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr.'s eighth-inning double drove in the go-ahead run and the Kansas City Royals edged the Detroit Tigers 3-2 on Sunday.

Witt Jr., who on Saturday became the fifth first-year player in major league history to have 20 home runs and 20 stoles bases, reached base three times. He has 24 go-ahead RBIs this season.

Royals manager Mike Matheny said Witt is emerging as a clutch hitter who can be compared with Salvador Perez.

“We make a big deal about Salvy and how when he gets in those situations, he's earned that reputation," Matheny said. “It's almost like he thrives on it. Bobby's starting to take that ownership onto himself, too, that this is a spot I want to be in, this is a spot that I thrive in.”

MJ Melendez scored a run and drove in another while Michael A. Taylor had three hits and scored a run.

The Royals, who hit four home runs in a 12-2 win on Saturday, struggled to push across runs most of the game. They left 13 runners on base and went 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

“A couple of missed opportunities,” Matheny said. “Usually when we're having these conversations at the end of games and we leave money out there, less than two outs and a man on third, we're talking about what could've and should've happened. But they continued to stay with it.”

Winning pitcher Dylan Coleman (4-1) pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Scott Barlow collected his 21st save.

Royals starter Max Castillo, recalled from Triple-A Omaha before the game, allowed two runs and five hits and struck out five in 4 2/3 innings.

Detroit starter Matt Manning gave up two runs and five hits in four innings. Gregory Soto (2-8) took the loss.

Harold Castro's two-run homer accounted for Detroit's runs. Riley Greene extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a third-inning single.

“They came up with the big hit and we didn't,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said.

The Royals took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on Nicky Lopez's RBI single and Melendez's bases-loaded walk.

Manning got the last two outs of the inning but reached the 90-pitch mark in the process. Hinch used six relievers.

“We really needed as much as we could get from him,” Hinch said. “We're not in a good position going to the bullpen that early.”

Detroit quickly tied it in the bottom of the inning on Castro's sixth homer this season.

Kansas City left the bases loaded in the seventh.

⚾ Witt's go-ahead double in 8th lifts Royals past Tigers

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Chris Klieman thought Kansas State had a nice set of offensive plays ready for the opening series of the season.

The Wildcats only got to call one of them Saturday night.

That's because Malik Knowles took the opening handoff 75 yards for a score, setting the tone for the rest of the game, and Deuce Vaughn proceeded to run for 126 yards and another touchdown in a 34-0 rout of overmatched South Dakota.

“We won the toss, took the football and scored on the first play,” Klieman said with a smile. “We had a really nice series of plays that we were going to operate and we ended up scoring on the first play.”

Nebraska transfer Adrian Martinez, who was just 11 of 15 for 53 yards through the air, added 39 yards rushing and a touchdown for Kansas State. Desmond Purnell returned an early blocked punt for a touchdown, and backup running back DJ Giddens reached the end zone midway through the third quarter to extend the lead to 34-0.

By that point, the Wildcats had built such a comfortable lead that they began resting their starters, and they in turn began thinking ahead to next weekend. Former conference rival Missouri is returning for the first time in more than a decade.

“I know they're a really good program, lots of talent,” Klieman said. “I'm excited to have that rivalry game played again.”

Carson Camp had 139 yards passing and an interception for the Coyotes, who couldn't overcome an abundance of dropped passes, silly penalties and other miscues against a team that expects to contend for the Big 12 title.

The game certainly looked nothing like their 2018 meeting, when the Coyotes lost a 27-24 heartbreaker.

“You have to learn from a game like this and get better for next week,” South Dakota coach Bob Nielson said.

The Wildcats started with a bang Saturday night, but it wasn't their high-profile transfer quarterback or star running back that stepped into the spotlight. It was Knowles, the somewhat mercurial wide receiver, who took a simple end-around and, picking up a nice block from Vaughn, raced 75 yards for a touchdown on the game's first play.

Things didn't get any better for South Dakota.

After the Coyotes were held to a second straight three-and-out, Seth Porter got his hand on the ensuing punt and Purnell picked it up, then ran untouched 17 yards to the end zone to give the Wildcats a 14-0 lead.

Vaughn shook free for the first time late in the first quarter, when he split the defense on a 39-yard touchdown run.

Just about the only thing that went wrong for the Wildcats, who also got a second-quarter TD from Martinez, came when Chris Tennant missed an extra point. Otherwise, their offense piled up 269 yards in the first half while their defense held the Coyotes to 99, and made a fourth-and-1 stop on South Dakota's only promising drive.

Kansas State scored again on its first possession of the second half, when Gidden checked into the game and found a 12-yard lane to the end zone, giving the Wildcats a 34-0 lead and effectively putting the game away.

“We played a ton of players that are going to get a great education from film,” Klieman said, “because we're going to need them as the season continues on, but overall I'm very pleased.”

Martinez spent most of the night checking down — at least, when he wasn't taking one of his three sacks. But that didn't bother Klieman, who was happy with the way the veteran transfer handled the Wildcats' revamped, up-tempo offense.

“I've seen us operate at a really high level throwing the football throughout fall camp,” Klieman said, “and it's something we’ll just continue to work on. But I'm not concerned about it. We’ll be better and we’ll be more efficient.”

South Dakota has five top-10 teams from the Football Championship Subdivision awaiting down the road. None of them will be as good as the Wildcats, so getting the experience the Coyotes did on Saturday night is bound to help.

Kansas State cruised without showing much offensively, and that bodes well for next week's showdown against the Tigers. Martinez only took a couple shots downfield all game as the Wildcats pounded the ball and dominated the clock.

South Dakota heads to Montana next Saturday.

Kansas State welcomes the Tigers back to town next Saturday.

🏐 FHSU splits final non-conference action

DETROIT (AP) — Kyle Isbel hit his first grand slam, Bobby Witt Jr. added a three-run home run and the Kansas City Royals routed the Detroit Tigers 12-2 on Saturday night.

Nick Pratto and MJ Melendez also homered for the Royals. It's the first time since at least 1906 that four first-year players on the same team have homered in the same game.

“We're young, but it's a really good group of guys,” Isbel said. “We're excited for the future and we're just going to keep getting better and getting after it every day.”

Nate Eaton had four hits and drove in two runs. Every player in the Kansas City lineup had at least one hit.

“It was a relentless offensive day,” manager Mike Matheny said. “The guys kept taking good at-bats inning after inning.”

Winning pitcher Jonathan Heasley (3-7) gave up two earned runs and eight hits, with two walks and two strikeouts in seven innings.

Isbel, a 25-year-old outfielder, hit his grand slam over the wall in right field off Jason Foley in the fifth to give the Royals a 9-1 lead. The slam was Isbel's fourth homer of the season and fifth of his two-year major league career.

“I hit it hard enough and it was high enough; I was just hoping it would stay fair,” he said.

Tucker Barnhart hit his first home run of the season for Detroit. Tigers starter Michael Pineda (2-7) allowed five runs and six hits with three strikeouts and two walks in four innings.

“They did a nice job offensively, but it starts with bad pitches,” manager A.J. Hinch said.

Pratto gave Kansas City a 1-0 lead with his two-out homer in the first. The Tigers tied it in the second on Ryan Kreidler's sacrifice fly, his first career RBI. Kreidler later added his first two major-league hits in his second career game.

Witt's homer gave the Royals a 4-1 lead in the third. Melendez added an RBI single in the fifth to give Kansas City a four-run advantage.

“It's a lot of fun seeing everyone contributing,” Witt said.

Royals rookie shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. reached the 20-20 mark for home runs and stolen bases. He's the fifth first-year player in major league history to accomplish the feat and fifth Kansas City player to have a 20-20 season.

“I'm guessing it might be the last one you see because it will be in the 30s after this,” manager Mike Matheny said. “That's the kind of player he is. He's special.”

Witt Jr. had 33 homers and 29 stolen bases in the minor leagues last season.

“It's always a goal. I was a stolen base short last year of 30-30," he said. “It would be cool to do that in the big leagues.”

Royals: 1B Vinnie Pasquantino (right shoulder discomfort) began a rehab assignment on Saturday with Triple-A Omaha. Pasquantino has been out of action since Aug. 22. ... C Salvador Perez (right hand contusion) was not in the lineup. He was hit by a pitch on Friday.

UNDATED (AP) — Kansas State begins a season of high expectations against South Dakota on Saturday before facing Missouri next week in a showdown against an ex-Big 12 rival. 

South Dakota took the Wildcats to the wire in their last meeting in 2018. Kansas State will lean on Nebraska transfer quarterback Adrian Martinez and returning running back Deuce Vaughn.

🏈 High expectations for Kansas State

The TMP-Marian Monarchs had to wait out a more than one-hour
long weather delay and then shake off a slow start on their way to a 26-13 week
one win over the Oakley Plainsmen Friday night in Oakley.

The game was delayed until 8:15 due to a storm that moved
into the Oakley area while the two teams were warming up.

The Monarchs failed to get anything going in the first two
offense possessions. The first drive came to end on a fumble and the second ended
in a punt.

Oakley turned the ball over on downs on their first
offensive possession and then the TMP defense forced the Plainsmen into a three-and-out.

The Monarchs were finally able to get on the board in the
second quarter, capping off a 10-play drive that covered 66 yards, capped off
with a two-yard touchdown run for Peyton Schwartz, his first career rushing
touchdown putting TMP 6-0.

After another Oakley three-and-out TMP strung together a
seven-play 53 yard drive that was finished off on a 15 yard Kade Harris
touchdown run giving TMP a 13-0 lead.

Oakley threatened to score at the end of the first half but
TMP was able to keep the Plainsmen off the board.

After a scoreless third quarter Oakley scored their first
touchdown of the game, taking advantage of a pass interference and face mask
penalty on the Monarchs that kept the drive alive. Will Schmidt scored from a yard
out to make it 13-6 TMP.

The Monarchs answered right back with a three play 57 yard
drive that saw Griffin Schumacher score his first rushing touchdown of the
season with the extra point putting TMP up 20-6. 

Five minutes later the Monarchs added a second touchdown run
for Schwartz, another two-yard run, giving TMP a 26-6 lead with just over five
and a half minutes remaining. 

Oakley added one more score with less than four minutes left
but TMP was able to secure the 26-13 victory and open the season 1-0 for the
second year in-a-row.

The Monarchs amassed more than 300 total yards of offense,
all on the ground. Harris finished with 146 yards on 20 carries. 

TMP will host the Ellis Railer Friday night in the Battle of
Big Creek at Lewis Field Stadium in Hays.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — There have been plenty of years that Kansas has struggled to beat teams from the Football Championship Subdivision to open the season, and second-year coach Lance Leipold is keenly aware of that fact.

Maybe that's why he didn't mince words when it came to assessing a 56-10 romp over Tennessee Tech on Friday night.

“You play who is on the schedule and you go from there. It's a game we should win by that margin and we did that," Leipold said. “We know this program hasn't had enough wins to be overly critical of how it plays out.”

There wasn't much to be critical about against the Golden Eagles.

Jalon Daniels threw for 182 yards with touchdowns on the ground and through the air before giving way to backup Jason Bean, who added a TD run of his own. Devin Neal took a handoff 80 yards for a score and finished with 108 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Nebraska transfer Sevion Morrison and Daniel Hishaw also reached the end zone.

Kansas even got a 61-yard TD return by Jacobee Bryant off a blocked field goal that set the tone early.

“We've talked about just gaining confidence and this team hasn't had a lot of that,” said Leipold, whose team piled up 297 yards rushing and 502 total yards. “This is definitely a step in the right direction.”

The Jayhawks' revamped defense was just as good: Golden Eagles starter Jeremiah Oatsvall was just 10-of-18 passing for 76 yards with a TD and an interception. The Jayhawks held Tennessee Tech to 93 yards rushing on 43 carries.

“I told our guys, ‘We played the best football team were going to play all year,’ ” Golden Eagles coach Dewayne Alexander said. “There were some things we’ll show big improvement from Week 1 to Week 2, but our guys did fight.”

After more than a decade of just about everything going wrong, the Jayhawks must have felt good about a first half — albeit against a lower-level opponent — in which just about everything went right.

Daniels connected on 14 of 15 passes for 182 yards, scoring on an 11-yard second-quarter run before passing to Mason Fairchild for a 2-yard score. Three different Jayhawks reached the end zone on the ground. And when Bryant scooped up that blocked field goal late in the first quarter and returned it 61 yards for a score, Kansas had its first such touchdown since Patrick Brown did it against Oklahoma in 1996.

Perhaps more importantly, the Jayhawks' rebuilt defense shut down the Golden Eagles.

Kansas forced a three-and-out on Tennessee Tech's first two possessions, then blocked the field goal on the next. And after Tennessee Tech finally converted a field goal to make it 21-3, the Jayhawks forced two more three-and-outs.

The second half wasn't nearly as clean for Kansas. Daniels nearly fumbled the ball away on their first possession before Jacob Borcila missed a 40-yard field-goal try, then the Jayhawks' quarterback threw a pick on his very next snap.

HAYS - The 2022 football season for Hays High opened by hosting the Junction City Blue Jays at Lewis Field Stadium.

Junction City jumped out to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter after the Indians had taken their first drive of the season down to the three yard line but failed to score.

The Blue Jays first scored on a tipped pass on 4th and 23 then a 52 yard pass on 3rd and 6. Hays responded back with a Kyrese Groen pass to Johnny Cano for 21 yards on 3rd and 6 to close the gap to 14-7.

Junction City scored with just 1:56 left before halftime to regain a two score lead at 21-7. Hays though stole some momentum back with a Groen five yard run with :17 left and closing the gap down to 21-14 at halftime.

The Hays defense did not allow a single score in the second half on five Junction City drives. The Blue Jays could not convert on fourth down three times in the half.

Hays got three Malik Bah touchdown runs of 57, 16 and 46 yards. The second scoring run gave the Indians the lead for the first time while the final score finalized the victory.

Bah ran for 273 yards and three scores on 31 carries. Groen rushed for 154 on 23 carries including one touchdown. Groen threw for another 105 yards, one score to Johnny Cano and one interception.

The Indians outgained Junction City 544 to 322.

Hays improves to 1-0 and will travel to Great Bend next week. Junction City is 0-1 and is home to Dodge City in seven days.

DETROIT (AP) — Ryan Kreidler scored twice in his major league debut, including the go-ahead run on pinch-hitter Harold Castro's seventh-inning single, and the Detroit Tigers edged the Kansas City Royals 5-4 on Friday night.

“Super fun,” said Kreidler, who was promoted from Triple-A Toledo on Thursday. “Got the nerves out somewhat. I think I'll still be nervous tomorrow and the next day, but it's all good.”

Batting ninth, Kreidler drew two walks. He lined out in his first at-bat and struck out in his last trip to the plate.

“I was ready to swing at every pitch,” he said. “My last at-bat showed that. I swung at a lot of pitches. But I was just trying to get them in the zone and try to treat it like another game.

"I wouldn't be crazy aggressive in any other game in the minors, so I'm just going to try to be the same person up here that I was down there.”

Javier Baez hit a two-run homer and Willi Castro had three hits, including a solo homer. Detroit snapped a three-game losing streak.

Andrew Chafin (1-2) got the win with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Gregory Soto struck out the side in the ninth for his 24th save.

Michael A. Taylor hit a two-run homer for the Royals, who have dropped three straight. Carlos Hernandez (0-4) took the loss.

Tigers starter Drew Hutchison gave up four runs, three earned, and six hits in 5 2/3 innings. Royals starter Daniel Lynch allowed four runs and five hits in five innings.

Kansas City scored a pair of two-out runs in the second. Kyle Isbel had an RBI single and Riley Greene's error while trying to retrieve the ball allowed another run to come home.

Detroit scored four runs in the fifth. Castro hit his solo homer with one out. Victor Reyes drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly before Baez launched his 12th homer on a full count.

Baez had gone 17 games without a homer. It was just his second since the beginning of August.

“It felt weird because I hadn't hit a homer in two months,” Baez said. “I was working on my hitting before the game. I was moving my arms too much.”

Taylor's ninth homer in the sixth tied it at 4.

Harold Castro poked his two-out single to left to drive in Kreidler in the seventh.

“Seventh inning, we have the leadoff walk and it comes back to bite us,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “In a close game like that, the free bases are what's going to be the deciding factor.”

Royals: RHP Daniel Mengden was designated for assignment and RHP Wyatt Mills was recalled from Triple-A Omaha. Mengden started for Kansas City on Thursday and gave up three runs in 2 2/3 innings against the Chicago White Sox. Mills is 0-1 with a 5.30 ERA in 18 relief appearances with Kansas City this season.

Royals: 1B Vinnie Pasquantino (right shoulder discomfort) took batting practice in Detroit on Friday. Pasquantino, who has been out since Aug. 22, is eligible to come off the injured list. ...
