HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State women's soccer team defeated Northwestern Oklahoma State by a score of 2-1 in the season opener on Thursday (Aug. 31) The Tigers wasted no time on the offensive end to start the season with two first half scores against the Rangers to improve to 1-0. The loss dropped NWOSU to 0-1.
Hannah Mares netted the first goal of the season for the Tigers just under three minutes into the match on an assist from Jadyn Newell to give FHSU the early momentum. Shortly after the first goal Montserrat Diaz knocked in another score for the Tigers to stretch the lead to 2-0.
Northwestern State would later respond in the first half of the match with their lone goal of the contest off of a shot from Isabella McMillan that was assisted by Lily Anderson to make the score 2-1.
The match would stay deadlocked from there with both teams working hard on the defensive end. The Fort Hays State Tigers recorded a total of 14 shots throughout the match, seven of which were on goal while the Rangers got off five shots, two on goal. Both teams finished the match with four fouls a piece.
The Tigers will be back in action at home on Saturday (Sep. 2) against Southwestern College. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
