HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Volleyball had four players named to the 2023 Tiger Classic All-Tournament Team, which took place this past weekend (Sept. 8-9) in Hays. Earning the honors were&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/riley-tinder/7504">Riley Tinder</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/emily-ellis/7495">Emily Ellis</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/gracie-rains/7500">Gracie Rains</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/caiya-stucky/7503">Caiya Stucky</a>. Tinder was named the MVP of the tournament. The team was selected by coaches of the five teams competing in the tournament.

Tinder averaged 2.4 kills per set with a total of 36 for the weekend. She also played solid defense, averaging 3.53 digs per set. Tinder had a weekend-high 15 kills against New Mexico Highlands in a 3-1 win and had a double-double of 11 kills and 19 digs against Southern Nazarene in a 3-0 win. She finished the weekend with 18 digs against Cameron to help FHSU cap an undefeated weekend.\

Ellis averaged 1.57 blocks per set at the Tiger Classic with a total of 22 over 14 sets. In a 3-1 win over Minnesota State, she had had a double-double in blocks and kills with 10 each. She was just one assisted block shy of her own school record for assisted blocks in a four-set match with nine. She had a weekend-high 12 kills in a 3-1 win over New Mexico Highlands. Ellis was just one point shy of the team lead for the weekend with 46 total points. Even as a middle blocker, she still averaged 1.14 digs per set for the weekend.

Rains averaged 3.14 kills per set to lead FHSU to an undefeated record at its home tournament, the Tiger Classic. She had 44 kills and took a team-high 109 attempts, producing a .211 hitting percentage for the week. She had a weekend-high 13 kills against both New Mexico Highlands and Southern Nazarene, averaging 4.3 kills per set in each of those matches. She led the team in points with 47 for the weekend.

Stucky averaged 10.73 assists, 2.47 digs, and 0.87 blocks per set for the tournament. Her best single-game average for the weekend in assists came in the 3-0 win over Southern Nazarene as she handed out 12.7 per set. Her weekend high for total assists was 45 against New Mexico Highlands in a 3-1 win, while adding 5 blocks in the match. Against Cameron, she added 14 digs with 41 assists for her second double-double performance of the season in those categories. Stucky also scattered in seven kills and three service aces for the weekend.

🏐 Four Tigers named to Tiger Classic all-tournament team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are trending toward having their two All-Pros on Sunday in Jacksonville.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Monday that tight end Travis Kelce, who hyperextended his knee in practice last week, has been progressing in his recovery. Just hours later, the club also announced that defensive tackle Chris Jones had agreed to a new one-year deal that should end his holdout and put him in line to play against the Jaguars.

“Chris is an elite player in this league, and over the last seven years, he’s really developed into a leader on our team,” Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said in a statement. “He’s been instrumental to our success and Super Bowl championship runs and it was a priority for us to keep him in a Chiefs uniform."

Kelce hurt his knee in the Chiefs' final practice before Thursday night's loss to Detroit. Tests showed there was no ligament damage, only a bone bruise and some swelling, and Kelce tried to get loose enough to play in the season opener. Chiefs coach Andy Reid and trainer Rick Burkholder ultimately made him inactive after a workout earlier in the day.

“Travis is getting better,” Reid said. “We’ll see how he does the rest of today or tomorrow and we’ll go from there.”

The Chiefs could certainly use their star tight end after their offense fizzled in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lions-chiefs-nfl-opener-2023-47ffe470713ec61bac6ed0570003658a">the 21-20 loss to the Lions</a>.

Without his security blanket, reigning NFL league MVP Patrick Mahomes was just 21 of 39 for 226 yards with two touchdown passes and an interception. The pick bounced off the hands of Kadarius Toney, who had several of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-kansas-city-nfl-e6110044c0256cb73dcd3dd54ec1068c">eight drops by Kansas City receivers</a>, and was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mahomes-dropped-passes-chiefs-lions-c8ae8f426ed6bf1bc861241ec5edcce9">returned by 50 yards for a touchdown</a>&nbsp;by Lions rookie Brian Branch.

Meanwhile, backup tight ends Noah Gray and Blake Bell combined to catch five passes for 43 yards.

“We'll get the receiving things taken care of. I feel good about the receivers we have,” Reid said on a zoom Monday with local reporters. “We are not normally guys that drop the ball but we did and we have to fix it. But I think there is talent that will just keep improving as they continue to play. I have seen them do it before. I think we'll get that worked out.”

The Chiefs have had some extra time after playing Thursday night. The Jaguars won 31-21 on Sunday in Indianapolis.

“We've all got to do better. That's the thing I took out of this,” Reid said, “whether it's coaching, it's playing, the O-line, the D-line — we can all take something out of this game and get better at it. There were spurts of good and there were spurts of not-so good, and we were in position to win the game. Normally we do that and we did not.”

Watching it all transpire was Jones, who had&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-kansas-city-jones-kelce-889bf33c05c0e1aa74c2476034569780">taken his contract holdout into the regular season</a>&nbsp;and wound up watching the opener alongside his agents, Jason and Michael Katz, from a suite inside Arrowhead Stadium.

The Chiefs did not disclose the terms of his new deal, but a source told The Associated Press no years were added to his four-year, $80 million deal due to expire. The person, speaking to AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the deal, said it instead includes incentives to substantially increase what Jones will make this season.

Jones forfeited a $500,000 workout bonus, accumulated $50,000 in fines for each day missed of mandatory minicamp and training camp, and lost about $1.1 million in his first game check for sitting out the game against Detroit.

DENVER (AP) — Jimmy Garoppolo threw two touchdown passes to fellow newcomer Jakobi Meyers in their Las Vegas debut and the Raiders spoiled Sean Payton's first game as Denver's coach with a 17-16 win over the Broncos on Sunday.

The Raiders stretched their winning streak over their AFC West rivals to seven games despite the absence of star pass rusher Chandler Jones, who's involved in a feud with the front office.

Garoppolo, who came to Las Vegas after six seasons in San Francisco, and Meyers, who joined the Raiders after four seasons in New England, connected 10 times for 81 yards, including touchdowns of 3 and 6 yards.

The second came with 6:34 remaining, erasing Denver's 16-10 lead.

The Raiders' defense then held Denver to its only three-and-out, giving the ball back to Garoppolo with about five minutes left.

Safety Kareem Jackson, who earlier intercepted Garoppolo in the end zone, was whistled for a 15-yard penalty when he hit Meyers in the head with an elbow after a key catch, sending him to the sideline. That infraction helped the Raiders run out the clock and go into victory formation.

Payton returned to the sideline after a year's sabbatical in the FOX broadcast booth in large part to revive Russell Wilson's career after the quarterback's worst season. Wilson looked much better than he did last year with Nathaniel Hackett at the helm, completing 27 of 34 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns without an interception.

Payton's special teams were the problem for Denver. There was a costly hold that negated one return, a botched onside kick to open the game and two big misses from kicker Wil Lutz, whom Payton had during his time in New Orleans and was acquired from the Saints following training camp.

Lutz missed his first extra point to the right and also was wide right on a 55-yard field goal.

That brought renewed scrutiny on Payton's decision to jettison veteran Brandon McManus last spring. McManus quickly signed with Jacksonville and was 5 for 5 on PATs and field goals Sunday in the Jaguars' 31-21 win over the Colts.

Lutz was good from 24 yards out to push Denver's lead to 16-10 midway through the fourth quarter. That capped a 16-play, 75-yard drive that followed Jackson's end-zone interception after the Raiders had reached the Denver 1.

Garoppolo responded by driving the Raiders 75 yards in six plays. The payoff was a 6-yard touchdown toss to Meyers, and Daniel Carlson's PAT proved the final margin.

Wilson threw two 5-yard touchdown passes in the first half. The first was to wide receiver Lil'Jordan Humphrey, another of Payton's former Saints players, on Denver's first drive. That marked the first time since 2008 at Oakland that Denver had scored a touchdown on its first drive of the season.

Wilson's 5-yard strike to Courtland Sutton with 18 seconds left in the second quarter gave Denver a 13-10 halftime lead as Wilson retreated to the locker room having completed 17 of 19 passes — with one of the misses being a clock-stopping spike — for 125 yards.

The Raiders also scored on their first drive when Garoppolo connected with Meyers from 3 yards out after the Broncos botched an onside kick to start the season when Tremon Smith touched the football a yard shy of the 10-yard marker, negating Essang Bassey's recovery.

Raiders: D Tre'von Moehrig left in the third quarter with an injured thumb.

Broncos: ILB Justin Strnad (left knee) was carted off in the first half and TE Greg Dulcich (knee) was injured on Denver's opening drive after halftime.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Fort Hays State men's soccer team traveled&nbsp;to Kansas City on Sunday to face off against the Rockhurst Hawks. The Tigers came up short by a score of 2-1, scoring their lone tally on a late goal.

Rockhurst scored quick with Tomasso Tirabassi putting the ball in the net off an assist by Sam McIntosh in the ninth minute. The Tigers were able to get looks during the first half with nine shots, four being on goal. The Tigers possessed the ball most of the first half with six corners to the Hawks' two.&nbsp;

Out of the half, the Tigers looked extremely aggressive, taking three shots in the first five minutes. As the half progressed, the Tigers continued to play with pace and were able to get decent looks. In the 85th minute, the aggressiveness of the Tigers opened up a scoring opportunity for the Hawks, and Daniele Bizzarri took full advantage scoring a goal assisted by Tirabassi. 

With 40 seconds to go,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/oliver-larsen/7683">Oliver Larsen</a>&nbsp;was able to put one through from a cross by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-soccer/roster/mika-leue/7677">Mika Leue</a>. It was too little, too late for the Tigers, but they ended up out shooting Rockhurst 17-8, seven on goal to the Hawks' three. The match was fairly physical with three cards and 21 fouls throughout the match.&nbsp;

The Tigers are at home for their next match when they face Midwestern State on Wednesday, September 13th at 5:00 p.m. The Mustangs come into the match 3-0-1, while the Tigers are 1-3-0.&nbsp;&nbsp;

TORONTO (AP) — Kevin Kiermaier hit a tiebreaking solo home run in the seventh inning and the Toronto Blue Jays took advantage of three consecutive wild pitches by Cole Ragans to beat the Royals 5-2 on Sunday, completing a three-game sweep.

Toronto came in tied with Seattle in the wild card race, 1 1/2 games ahead of Texas. The Rangers begin a four-game series north of the border on Monday. The Blue Jays moved a game ahead of the Mariners in the wild card after Seattle lost at Tampa Bay.

Kiermaier broke a 2-2 tie with a home run off right-hander Taylor Clarke (2-5), his eighth. Santiago Espinal and Cavan Biggio made it 5-2 with RBI singles off Jackson Kowar in the eighth.

Blue Jays right-hander José Berríos (10-10) allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings to snap a five-start winless streak.

Right-hander Yimi García got two outs in the eighth and left-hander Génesis Cabrera retired MJ Melendez to strand the tying run at third.

Jordan Romano wrapped it up for his 34th save in 37 chances as the Royals left the bases loaded.

The major league-worst Royals (44-100) lost their fourth straight, giving them 100 losses for the first time since 2019.

Ragans extended his scoreless innings streak to 26 with five shutout innings to begin the game, but his outing unraveled in the sixth.

The Blue Jays didn’t put a runner in scoring position until Ragans issued consecutive two-out walks to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Davis Schneider in the sixth.

Facing trouble for the first time, Ragans suddenly lost his control and his footing. He slipped and threw wildly to the backstop on his first pitch to Alejandro Kirk as both runners moved up.

Ragans waved off manager Matt Quatraro and the trainer, then threw another pitch to the backstop, allowing Guerrero to score. Ragans slipped again on his next pitch as Schneider raced home with the tying run.

Third base umpire and crew chief Jeff Nelson came to inspect the mound after the third wild throw. Ragans was replaced after walking Kirk with his next pitch. Clarke came on and retired Whit Merrifield to end the inning.

Ragans allowed two runs and one hit in 5 2/3 innings. He walked a career-high six and struck out six.

George Springer’s leadoff single in the third was the only hit off Ragans.

Kansas City scored twice off Berríos in the top of the sixth. Kyle Isbel led off with a triple and came home on Bobby Witt Jr.’s one-out double. Witt stole third and scored on Salvador Perez’s grounder.

Witt’s stolen base in the sixth was his 40th. It’s the 25th time in Royals history that a player has stolen 40 or more bases. The last to do it was Whit Merrifield in 2021.

She won the singles C bracket and teamed with&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/grace-unruh/7547">Grace Unruh</a>&nbsp;to win the doubles B bracket. Gill and Unruh surrendered just three points en route to their title. They defeated teams from Kansas Wesleyan, Tabor, and Concordia (Neb.) to win the title, outscoring their opponents 24-3, which included an 8-0 win in their semifinal match. On day two in singles, Gill breezed past opponents from Bethany (Kan.) and Sterling (Kan.) before claiming the finals match over Abby Veile of Bethany. Gill went 6-0 in doubles and singles combined.

She pulled out a couple of competitive wins in her first two matches by scores of 8-6 and 8-5 before winning the finals match over Tara Stewart of Tabor College by a score of 8-2.

Aside from four titles among five players, the Tigers also had a pair of second-place finishes. The doubles team of&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/shreethika-vangala/7612">Shreethika Vangala</a>&nbsp;and Ines LaTorre reached the finals match of the A bracket with a pair of 8-2 wins before getting topped by teammates Alfonso and Mendez in the finals. In the singles F draw,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/heidi-lubbers/7542">Heidi Lubbers</a>&nbsp;posted wins over players from Concordia (Neb.) and Kansas Wesleyan by scores of 8-3 and 8-0 before coming up short in an 8-5 decision to Camila Castro of Sterling.

HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State women's soccer team tied No. 15 Augustana on Sunday by a score of 0-0. The tie brings Fort Hays State's record to 3-0-1, while the Vikings moved to 2-1-1. The Tigers were able to outshoot their opponent 11-5 throughout the match, but neither team was able to net a goal.

⚽ Tiger women play to draw with No. 15 Augustana

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs proved in their season-opening loss to the Detroit Lions on Thursday night that their defense can get by just fine without Chris Jones, at least for a while, as the All-Pro defensive tackle continues his holdout.

While the Chiefs defense repelled the Lions all night,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mahomes-dropped-passes-chiefs-lions-c8ae8f426ed6bf1bc861241ec5edcce9">their perpetually high-scoring offense fizzled</a>, undone by dropped passes, penalties and miscommunication. Patrick Mahomes looked a beat off, the offensive line played well until two significant penalties as the Chiefs tried to march for a go-ahead field goal, and just about everyone who had an opportunity to get their hands on the ball dropped it at least once,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lions-chiefs-nfl-opener-2023-47ffe470713ec61bac6ed0570003658a">all leading to a 21-20 loss at Arrowhead Stadium.</a>

Perhaps it would have turned out differently if Mahomes had Kelce, his All-Pro tight end and sure-handed security blanket,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-lions-travis-kelce-52ad950cf2472c589bd48ee813145cd3">who missed the game after hyperextending his knee</a>&nbsp;in practice two days earlier.

“I mean, you're losing I think the best tight end of all time,” Mahomes said. “It's going to have an impact on the game, but others guys have to step up, and they're going to have to step up in moments, because I'm sure there will be times when he gets doubled, and so we're just going to have to rely on guys that are young and talented to step up and make plays.”

Mahomes finished by saying, “I believe they will.” But they did little Thursday night to create a whole lot of confidence.

Noah Gray, who was first off the bench to replace Kelce, miscommunicated once with Mahomes and dropped his pass on another play. Jerick McKinnon, who rarely drops a pass, did so late in the game. Kadarius Toney not only had one bounce off his hands for a pick-6 but dropped what would have been a long gain as the Chiefs were driving for go-ahead points.

Hard to believe that Kelce would have dropped so many balls under any circumstances.

“Got to be better as an offense,” said Blake Bell, another Kansas City tight end. “Defense battled their tails off, played great. Offensively we've got to finish when we get down there and whatever it is — dropped balls — we're just not scoring.”

Kelce tried to convince Chiefs coach Andy Reid and trainer Rick Burkholder to let him play, going through a series of drills earlier in the day. But he acknowledged some pain in the knee and Reid and Burkholder decided to give him the night off.

There is hope that the 10 days before the Chiefs' next game in Jacksonville is enough to ensure Kelce is back on the field.

“I feel like we put ourselves in some bad situations. We didn’t execute. Couldn’t get conversions on third downs," McKinnon said. "When you play against a good team you can’t do those things, and if you can’t come up with points, this is what happens.”

Mahomes provided some of the biggest highlights against Detroit not with his strong right arm but with his feet, and the fact that his scrambling topped a short list of things that were working is a bad sign. Mahomes ran six times for 45 yards, while the rest of the Chiefs combined for another 45 yards rushing but needed 17 carries to get them.

The Chiefs have one of the league's youngest secondaries and it showed when Lions ace Amon-Ra St. Brown diced it up. It would have helped to have Jones, who watched from a stadium suite, putting pressure on Jared Goff so that the defensive backfield did not have to cover for so long, but regardless, the Lions simply had too many guys wide open.

It's not fair to say Kelce's stock rose when he didn't play, even though it may be true. Of those on the field, defensive end Mike Danna may have gotten the biggest bump by his performance. He had six tackles, a pass deflection and the Chiefs' lone sack, and his ability to create a little bit of pressure was sorely needed.

Toney has had a rough couple months. He needed surgery after one practice at training camp for a torn meniscus in his knee, causing him to miss the entire preseason, and the rust was evident. Not only did Toney drop some high-pressure passes, he also was stuffed for a loss on second-and-2 at the Detroit 20 midway through the fourth quarter. And when McKinnon dropped a pass of his own on the next play, the Chiefs had to settle for a field goal that left them with a 20-14 lead.

The Chiefs came out of the game without any new injuries, one of the few bright spots for them on opening night.

1 — Mahomes lost for the first time in a season opener Thursday night. He also threw his first interception in a Week 1 game.

🏈 Chiefs get by just fine without holdout Chris Jones, but injury to Travis Kelce proved costly

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Will Howard passed for three touchdowns and ran for two others as No. 15 Kansas State defeated Troy 42-13 Saturday.

Howard threw touchdown passes of 9 yards to Jadon Jackson and 39 yards to Philip Brooks to help the Wildcats (2-0) to a 21-10 lead at the half, and his 2-yard run late in the third quarter made it an 18-point game.

K-State went over 40 points for the fourth straight regular-season game. The Wildcats also stopped Troy's 12-game winning streak, the second-longest in FBS coming into the game.

Howard finished 21 of 32 for 250 yards and had eight carries for 33 yards.

“It wasn't perfect, by any stretch,” Howard said. “We had some rough moments early in the second quarter. But we needed it. This was a game where we learned a lot. That was a really good team. They've got one of the tougher defenses I've ever gone against. They were hitting, and they did some really good things, schematically.

"I think that was a really good game for us to learn from. ”

K-State held the Trojans (1-1) to 286 total yards a week after they gained 540 against Stephen F. Austin.

Troy's Gunnar Watson was 17 of 32 for 167 yards with a touchdown and interception.

The Wildcats put the game out of reach with a nine-play, 76-yard drive capped by Howard's 1-yard shovel pass to Treshaun Ward for a 35-13 lead.

“That was a great win for our guys, a great win over a really good team,” K-State coach Chris Klieman said. “Their quarterback is a good player. We were going to shut down their run game. We gave them one big run where we missed a fit, but we did a really good job in the rush game."

K-State had a 21-10 halftime lead and put the clamps on the Troy offense in the third quarter. The Trojans' first three drives netted minus-1 yard.

“They had their way in the second quarter a little bit, so we had to make some adjustments," Klieman said. "I thought our guys adjusted well.”

Troy had pulled within 14-10 with 52 seconds left in the second quarter on Watson's 21-yard TD pass to Chris Lewis. Lewis made a dazzling one-handed catch in the end zone.

Kansas State had a huge answer just before halftime when Howard found Brooks on a crossing pattern for the 39-yard touchdown with 10 seconds left. Brooks caught the ball around the 20 and raced up the sideline for the score and a 21-10 halftime lead.

“We definitely needed to make a play right there,” Brooks said. “That play was big-time, because they had stopped us a few times.”

Kansas State did not overlook Troy. After being stunned at home by non-Power Five opponents in two of the last three seasons, the Wildcats defended the home field with a strong defensive effort.

Troy: Trojans will return home to face James Madison for their Sun Belt Conference opener.

Kansas State: Wildcats will travel to Columbia, Missouri, for a matchup with their former Big Eight and Big 12 rival Missouri.

🏈 Howard 5 TDs carries Wildcats to win over Troy

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State volleyball team extended its winning streak to five matches after a pair of four-set victories Saturday on day two of the 2023 Tiger Classic, defeating both Minnesota State and Cameron. The five-match winning streak is the longest for the Tigers since they started the 2016 season with 12-consecutive victories.

The Tigers were the lone team to finish the weekend undefeated, picking up wins over all four teams that made the trip to Hays for the Tiger Classic. Minnesota State finished the weekend 3-1, while Southern Nazarene had two wins and two losses. Cameron turned in a record of 1-3, with New Mexico Highlands going winless.

Emily Ellis matched her career-high with 10 blocks against the Mavericks, recording a double-double thanks to 10 kills.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/taylor-hawkins/7497">Taylor Hawkins</a>&nbsp;anchored the offense in the second contest of the day, racking up 17 kills to lead all players.

After two weeks and nine matches of non-conference preparation, Fort Hays State will jump into league play next weekend (Sept. 15-16) with a road trip to play Emporia State (Friday, 6 p.m.) and Washburn (Saturday, 6 p.m.).

Fort Hays State 3, Minnesota State 1 (14-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-23) The Tigers struggled out of the gate in the opener, falling to Minnesota State, 25-14, before bouncing back to pick up a dominant win of their own in the second set, 25-15. After posting an attack percentage of zero and allowing a swing rate of .400 in the opening set, FHSU turned in a rate of .276 in the second set while limiting the Mavericks to an attack percentage below zero -.077. Claire Olson and Gracie Rains&nbsp;both contributed four kills each in the set, while&nbsp; Ellis totaled three blocks.

Four team blocks helped the Tigers to another wire-to-wire victory in the third set, winning 25-23. Fort Hays State led by as many as nine midway through the set, 17-8, before the Mavericks crept closer the rest of the way. MSU closed within two down the stretch, 23-21, but a kill from Rains handed the Tigers the win and a 2-1 lead.

The fourth set was close the entire way, with FHSU only falling behind when it was 2-1. The Tigers took the lead two rallies later, but MSU hung around by tying the score six more times through the set. The teams were tied at 23 before a kill from Ellis and a combo block from Caiva Stucky and Ashlyn Reeves&nbsp;sealed the FHSU victory.

Two other Tigers joined Ellis in double figures in kills, including Rains with 11 and Olson with 10. Stucky dished out 37 assists while adding nine digs and four blocks. Brooke Hyland&nbsp;paced the team with 24 digs.

Fort Hays State accumulated 14 total blocks in the contest, compared to just five from the Mavericks.

Fort Hays State 3, Cameron 1 (25-22, 25-15, 23-25, 25-23) The Tigers seemed poised to pick up a sweep in the final match of the weekend after wins of 25-22 and 25-15 in the first two sets against Cameron. The third set was a different tune, with neither team leading by more than two points the entire way. The score changed hands seven times during the frame to go along with 18 ties. Fort Hays State led as late as 23-22, but three-straight points from the Aggies extended things to a fourth set.

Fort Hays State held on in the fourth, winning 25-23 thanks in part to five kills from Ellis, four from Tinder and five Aggie service errors.

Hawkins' 17 kills are second-most in a match by a Tiger this season (Gracie Rains, 18 at Colorado School of Mines, 9/1/23). Tinder led the team with 18 digs, while Stucky tossed up 41 assists and added four blocks. The five-match winning streak is the longest for the Tigers since they started the 2016 season with 12-consecutive victories.The Tigers were the lone team to finish the weekend undefeated, picking up wins over all four teams that made the trip to Hays for the Tiger Classic. Minnesota State finished the weekend 3-1, while Southern Nazarene had two wins and two losses. Cameron turned in a record of 1-3, with New Mexico Highlands going winless.Emily Ellis matched her career-high with 10 blocks against the Mavericks, recording a double-double thanks to 10 kills.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/taylor-hawkins/7497">Taylor Hawkins</a>&nbsp;anchored the offense in the second contest of the day, racking up 17 kills to lead all players.After two weeks and nine matches of non-conference preparation, Fort Hays State will jump into league play next weekend (Sept. 15-16) with a road trip to play Emporia State (Friday, 6 p.m.) and Washburn (Saturday, 6 p.m.).Fort Hays State 3, Minnesota State 1 (14-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-23) The Tigers struggled out of the gate in the opener, falling to Minnesota State, 25-14, before bouncing back to pick up a dominant win of their own in the second set, 25-15. After posting an attack percentage of zero and allowing a swing rate of .400 in the opening set, FHSU turned in a rate of .276 in the second set while limiting the Mavericks to an attack percentage below zero -.077. Claire Olson and Gracie Rains&nbsp;both contributed four kills each in the set, while&nbsp; Ellis totaled three blocks.Four team blocks helped the Tigers to another wire-to-wire victory in the third set, winning 25-23. Fort Hays State led by as many as nine midway through the set, 17-8, before the Mavericks crept closer the rest of the way. MSU closed within two down the stretch, 23-21, but a kill from Rains handed the Tigers the win and a 2-1 lead.The fourth set was close the entire way, with FHSU only falling behind when it was 2-1. The Tigers took the lead two rallies later, but MSU hung around by tying the score six more times through the set. Fort Hays State led as late as 23-22, but three-straight points from the Aggies extended things to a fourth set.Fort Hays State held on in the fourth, winning 25-23 thanks in part to five kills from Ellis, four from Tinder and five Aggie service errors.Hawkins' 17 kills are second-most in a match by a Tiger this season (Gracie Rains, 18 at Colorado School of Mines, 9/1/23). 🏐 Tigers pick up two more wins at Tiger Classic

BROOMFIELD, Colo. - The Fort Hays State women's golf team tied for 10th at the season-opening Swan Memorial this weekend (Sept. 8-9) at the Broadlands Golf Course. The par-72, 5,996-yard course played tough all week, with the field stroke average coming in at 87.8 after three rounds of competition.

The Tigers turned in a 314 for the first round and then the team had 330 strokes during the second round on day one. The team was able to shave 7 strokes off that second round score in Saturday's round three. FHSU finished the 14-team tournament with a 54-hole total of 967, tying for 10th place with Bellevue.

The reigning MIAA Player of the Year,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-golf/roster/morgan-brasser/7686">Morgan Brasser</a>, finished top 5 in the 86-player field. Brasser opened her senior year off by tying the school record with a 3-under 69 thanks to five birdies and a hole-in-one. Brasser finished with 10 birdies on the weekend and fired rounds of 72, 3-under 69 and then 3-over 75, tying for fourth in the tournament and going even on the weekend.

<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-golf/roster/corbyn-marquess/7690">Corbyn Marquess</a>&nbsp;made her debut with the Tigers and tied for 49th after scores of 77, 82 and 85. ⛳ FHSU women 10th, Brasser ties low round record

TORONTO (AP) — George Springer homered twice and drove in four runs, Kevin Gausman struck out 10 over eight sharp innings and the Toronto Blue Jays moved a season-best 16 games above .500 by beating the Kansas City Royals 5-1 on Saturday.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had two hits for the Blue Jays (79-63), who entered 1 1/2 games ahead of Texas for the final AL wild card berth. Toronto has won five of six and is 6-2 in September.

"This is a fun time to play," Springer said. "We're obviously right in the middle of it."

Springer homered against Zach Greinke (1-15) in the fourth and Angel Zerpa in the seventh, his 21st multihomer game and first this year. Springer has 19 homers this season.

"When he's hot, he can just take over the game," Gausman said of Springer. "He kind of single-handedly beat them today. When he's feeling good at the plate, there's nobody better."

Gausman (11-8) allowed one run and two hits, and raised his AL-leading strikeouts total to 217 with his eighth double-digit strikeout game this season and first since June 27. He struck out the side in the eighth.

"It's what he's been doing since we acquired him last year," manager John Schneider said.

Gausman said an ability to locate his fastball down in the strike zone helped make his splitter more effective.

"I had really good command, probably better as the game went on," Gausman said. "When I'm able to dot that pitch, it definitely makes things harder for hitters."

Royals outfielder Drew Waters had one of Kansas City's two hits but struck out in his other two at-bats. Waters agreed that it was hard to lay off Gausman's splitter.

"When you start looking down in the zone for his fastball because that's where he's throwing it and then he sneaks a split in there right after, it's hard not to swing at it," Waters said.

Jordan Hicks pitched a 1-2-3 ninth as the Royals were held to two hits or fewer for the ninth time.

Kansas City lost its third straight and eighth of 11. The Royals (44-99) have the worst record in the major leagues and are one defeat from their first 100-loss season since 2019.

Springer put Toronto ahead in the fourth with a leadoff homer off Greinke, who allowed four runs and six hits over 3 2/3 innings of relief. The 39-year-old right-hander, a six-time All-Star, is 0-11 with a 5.56 ERA in 19 appearances since beating Baltimore on May 3.

"He was battling out there," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. "He struggled for command, for stuff. He wasn't as sharp as he normally is."

Grienke's 15 losses are one shy of teammate Jordan Lyles, the major league leader.

Gausman didn't allow a hit through the first four innings, but Edward Olivares tied it with a solo homer in the fifth.

Springer's two-run single in the bottom half gave Toronto a 3-1 lead. Springer is 10 for 18 in his career against Greinke.

Toronto made it 4-1 in the sixth when Guerrero singled and scored on Cavan Biggio's double.

Guerrero stuck his right hand out to touch home plate while avoiding an attempted tag on his left arm from catcher Salvador Perez.

Gausman pitched for the first time since cutting off several inches of hair, which had previously reached his shoulders.

"I was just tired of it," Gausman said. "It was so hot, my neck was just sweating too much. A cold neck today was pretty nice. It felt good."

Royals 2B Michael Massey grabbed Guerrero's grounder in the seventh and flipped it to SS Bobby Wit Jr., who threw to first for the out.

"That was incredible," Quatraro said. "They've done that a couple of times but I think that's the best of the ones they've done."

Kansas City has not won a series north of the border since 2017 and has lost nine of its past 10 games in Toronto.

Royals: Kansas City put LHP Austin Cox (left knee) on the 60-day IL and C Freddy Fermin (fractured right middle finger) in the 10-day IL. Cox had to be helped off the field after he was injured covering first base in the seventh inning of Friday's loss. Fermin was injured on a catcher's interference play in the eighth. The Royals activated RHP Brad Keller (shoulder) off the 60-day IL and selected the contract of C Tyler Cropley from Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

Blue Jays: SS Bo Bichette got the day off after being activated off the IL Friday. Bichette returned after missing nine games because of a strained right quadriceps.

Blue Jays RHP José Berríos (9-10, 3.68 ERA) is expected to face Royals LHP Cole Ragans (6-4, 3.00) in Sunday's series finale. Ragans has pitched 21 consecutive scoreless innings, the longest active streak in the majors.

HAYS -&nbsp;It came down the final seconds, but for a second week in a row for the Hays High football team won a&nbsp; game on the final play of the game, beating Great Bend 28-27 Friday night at Lewis Field.

All the first half scoring occurred in the first quarter. Hays opened the game with a touchdown scoring drive of eight plays that ended with Carter Graham finding Jarek Purdy for 37 yards. Graham, in at kicker this week, booted through the extra point.

Great Bend responded with a six play, 80 yard drive to tie the game on a 51 yard pass play. The Panthers picked off a deflected pass on Hays' next possession to set up a short field that quarterback Daxton Minton took advantage of on a 9 yard touchdown run.&nbsp;

Great Bend led 14-7 but for only 55 seconds. Malik Bah hit the left end for a 72 yard touchdown scamper and the Graham PAT tied the game at 14.

Neither team scored in the second quarter. Dalton Meyers picked of a Great Bend pass but Hays was turned away on fourth down and a half-yard on the ensuing possession.

They embarked on a 15 play, 80 yard drive that took just over five minutes. Ian McGuire capped off the lengthy drive with a three yard run for his first touchdown of the season. Hays converted on four third downs during the drive.Great Bend followed suit with their on five plus minute drive to regain the lead. The Panthers covered 85 yards in 13 plays while converting on two third downs. A touchdown with 2:15 remaining gave the visitors a 27-21 lead, but the extra point was no good leaving the scoreboard the same.Hays High used a long kickoff return to the Panther 44 yard line to set up their go ahead drive. The Indians covered the terrain in six plays and capped it on 4th and 8 with Bah to Johnny Cano touchdown pass.
