KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Garrett Crochet allowed one run on seven hits over seven innings, Rafael Devers was 4 for 4 with three RBIs and the Boston Red Sox beat Kansas City 10-1 on Saturday night to end the Royals' winning streak at seven.

Crochet (4-2) struck out nine and walked one. He struck out Bobby Witt Jr. with the bases loaded to end the seventh.

Trevor Story blew open a close game with a three-run homer.

Cole Ragans (2-2) took the loss. He allowed four runs on seven hits through five innings. He struck out eight and walked two.

The Red Sox got to Ragans in the third. With two outs, Jarren Duran singled and scored on Devers' double.

The Royals answered with a run in the bottom of the third. Witt stroked a one-out single, stole second, went to third on a balk and scored on a looping hit by Mark Canha.

The Red Sox scored three runs in the fifth on four consecutive hits. Duran, Devers and Alex Bregman each delivered RBI singles.

Story's home run came with two outs in the seventh, and Carlos Narvaez added a two-run shot in the eighth.

After the Red Sox took a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning, Crochet got the shut-down inning he needed. Even with an error by shortstop Trevor Story, Crochet didn't allow a runner to reach second base.

Kansas City’s Salvador Perez celebrated his 35th birthday Saturday. With a first-inning single, Perez had a hit for the seventh time in the last 10 years on his birthday.

Hays, KS - Hays High ended the 2025 Diamond Classic with a 2-2 record after beating Life Prep and losing to TMP.

Hays High 6, Life Prep 5 It was an improbable comeback in game one that led the Indians to a one run victory. Hays trailed the Fire of Life Prep 2-0 after four innings. Life Prep (12-15) scored on a bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly for the first advantage.&nbsp;

They added a single run in the fifth with an RBI single for a 3-0 edge.

Hays got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth when Landon Hardman led the inning off with a single and later scored on a fielder's choice for a 3-1 game.

The runs were earned back in the top of the sixth by Life Prep. The Fire led off the inning with a pair of singles and later scored. The final run was scored on a wild pitch for a 5-1 score.

Hays went down in order in the sixth. The Indians were down to their final strike in the bottom of the seventh before Jalen Smith put a ball in play and reached on an error. Carter Graham followed that up with a walk. Brett Rhoades singled and Trace Jacobs did the same to score Smith.&nbsp;

Life Prep made a pitching change and Hays waited the new pitcher out as he couldn't find the strike zone. Bennett Smith walked to drive in a run and Ian McGuire was hit by a pitch to score another. Hardman was walked on a 3-2 pitch count to tie the game. Kal Londsdale on his first start of the season was hit on a 1-2 pitch count to score Smith for the 6-5 victory.

Johnny Cano (4-1) pitched the seventh inning for the win. Carter Graham went six inning. He allowed six hits, five runs, three earned with two walks and three strike outs.

Hardman, Graham and Cano each had two hits.

TMP 5, Hays High 2 TMP (19-5) scored three runs in the first inning without recording and hit on their way to a 5-2 victory over the Hays High Indians.

Three walks, a hit batter and a fielder's choice led to a 3-0 first inning lead for the Monarchs. Starting pitcher Brett Rhoades recorded one out before giving way to Johnny Canon in relief. Cano and the Indian defense held TMP scoreless over the next four innings.&nbsp;

Hays (13-8) however couldn't figure out Carson Lyles. The TMP starting pitcher worked all seven innings for the victory. The Indians had just one baserunner through the first four innings.&nbsp;

Hays threatened in the fifth with two on and one out but couldn't score. TMP notched a run in the top of the sixth on three straight singles from Connor Breit, Isaac Purinton and Jacob Seib for a 4-0 lead.

The Indians managed two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Johnny Cano singled then Jalen Smith drove him in with a double. Carter Graham singled home Smith for a 4-2 game. Brett Rhoades reached on a single but was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice on the next at-bat. As base running error on a pop up to right field resulted in a double play and ended the inning.&nbsp;

TMP added an insurance run for Lyles (3-1) in the top of the seventh after Grant Nehls singled and later scored on a wild pitch for the final of 5-2.

Lyles allowed seven hits and two runs while walking one and striking out six in the victory. Cano went five and two-thirds innings before being lifted on pitch count on the combination of game one and two. He allowed six hits and one run. Cano walked two and struck out four. Trace Jacobs allowed one run on one hit and two walks in the seventh.&nbsp;

Graham recorded two hits for the Indians. Grant Nehls and Connor Breit had two hits each for TMP.

Hays will finish the regular season with a trip to Liberal for a single game on Thursday and then host Junction City for a doubleheader on Friday.

ANDOVER – The Hays High softball team split their two games Saturday
at the Andover Central softball fields. The Indians lost 17-7 to the host
Jaguars then defeated Kapaun Mt. Carmel 14-13. HHS is now 14-9 on the season. They
travel to Garden City to close out Western Athletic play Tuesday with a single
game against the Buffaloes.

Andover Central 17, Hays 7 (6 innings) The Jaguars scored five runs in the top of the first inning and led 10-0 after
2 1/2 innings. The Indians rallied with four in the bottom of the third to cut
the gap to 10-4 but Andover Central responded with six in the top of the fourth.
HHS scored three in the bottom of the inning. ACHS added a run in the sixth for
the run-rule victory.

Riley Dreher, Brynlee Rupp and Avery Solida had two if the
Indians eight hits. Dreher and Alyse Zimmerman both drove in two runs.

Jaylee Summers went the distance for HHS in the circle
surrendering 17 runs (10 earned) on 17 hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Hays 14, Kapaun Mt. Carmel 13
 This back and forth game saw both teams score three in the first and two in
the second. The Indians plated five in the fourth only to see the Crusaders answer
with foru in the bottom of the inning. HHS got a little separation with three
in the fifth and another run in the sixth then held off the Crusaders rally.

scored on Alyze Zimmerman’s single. Brynlyee Brous and Lanie Becker were both
hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it a 3-0 game.

Leading by one run, Katie Klein opened the fifth with a double
and later scored on a wild pitch. Rylynn Davis, who singled, scored on an
error. Brous drove in the Indians final run with a two-out single to put Hays
up 13-9.

Zimmerman had four of the Indians 15 hits and drove in two. Dreher
and Rupp both homered and had three hits. Brous added two hits and drove in
three runs.

Dreher allowed 11 runs (8 earned) on 13 hits with three
strikeouts and one walk for the win in the circle. Becker allowed on run on
three hits with three walks and no strikeouts over the final 1 1/3 innings.

⚾📹 Hays High finishes Diamond Classic with Life Prep and TMP

The 2015 Hays Soccer Club boys traveled to Wichita for the 2025 Wichita Spring Invitational May 2-4.

Their first test of the tournament came against a familiar and former Stryker League foe VC Fusion 15B Green from Valley Center. 

The first half started as a back and forth battle between both teams. Bryce Irwin was able to net the first goal for HSC. VC was able to also net a goal to go all square at 1-1. Hays would stat the scoring column two more times in the half, first on an assist from Noah Berges to Daniel Marcano and then later in the half Berges found the net on an assist from Irwin. 

Coming out of the half, ball control and defense were key. An early goal by VC in the 2nd half pulled them within 2-3. Great goal keeping by Ryder Feldt (12 saves in the game), strong play from defenders Miles Mergen, James Summerall, and Reed Sulzman, and enough ball control halted any other scoring as the final score ended 3-2 in HSC’s favor.

The second and afternoon slate was against Wichita native club - Azteca Jr Academy 15B. HSC figured out quickly that this was going to be a much more physical and aggressive match. Finley Zimmerman started the scoring for Hays in the first half on a break away strike. Azteca then scored to knot things up at 1-1. Later off a goalie deflection, Cameron Feldt was able to send the ball back in to put HSC up 2-1. 

Second half defensive effort from James Summerall, C. Feldt, Reed Sulzman, and Miles Mergen, and goals by Daniel Marcano and Ryder Feldt made the final score HSC - 4 / Azteca - 1. &nbsp;Ryder Feldt and Bryce Irwin split the halves as goalies and matched each other with 4 saves.

Just4Kix Lightning 15B, another former Stryker League opponent, was the early Sunday afternoon draw for HSC. Lincoln Hamel and Daniel Marcano put two goals in quickly to put HSC up early 2-0. &nbsp;Coming in at forward in the first half, Ryder Feldt netted his 2nd goal of the tournament on a long free kick. Later in the half on a nice pass from Alex Penka, Noah Berges sent a laser in to put HSC up 4-0. &nbsp;Right before the intermission, Hamel was able to net his second goal of the half for 5 first half goals for Hays. 

It was a “family reunion” to start the second half as Cameron Feldt was able to find cousin Ryder Feldt on a cross for Ryder’s second goal of the game. &nbsp;A fly by the defender gave Marcano his second goal of the day. &nbsp;Later in the half, C. Feldt found Reed Sulzman for his second assist and Sulzman’s first goal. JFKL 15 was able to put 2 in goal late in the 2nd half to end it 8-2 advancing Hays into the championship game. Bryce Irwin and C. Feldt split the game as goalies with 8 and 2 saves each.

In their first Wichita tournament final, HSC met Pool B winner, Black Lightning Bandidos from Wichita. BLB came out quick and aggressive and HSC found themselves down 0-2 midway through the 1st half. Bryce Irwin was able to send a nice goal in to bring HSC closer at 1-2. Another BLB goal put HSC down at the half 1-3. 

Starting the 2nd half, the HSC found their passing game and were able to net Irwin’s second goal of the game on an assist from Noah Berges. Off a corner kick a huge goal was put in by Finley Zimmerman to knot the match at 3-3. &nbsp;A late 2nd half goal by BLB put them up 4-3. HSC dug deep the final 4-5 minutes of the second half to put the pressure on in the BLB box. With 20-30 seconds left in the second half, HSC was awarded a corner kick and converted with Berges netting the pass from the Cameron Feldt kick with 3 seconds left to play. 

As ties are not allowed in championships, penalty kicks to crown the winner ensued.

 </figure>SubmittedThe 2015 Hays Soccer Club boys traveled to Wichita for the 2025 Wichita Spring Invitational May 2-4.Their first test of the tournament came against a familiar and former Stryker League foe VC Fusion 15B Green from Valley Center. The first half started as a back and forth battle between both teams. Bryce Irwin was able to net the first goal for HSC. VC was able to also net a goal to go all square at 1-1. Hays would stat the scoring column two more times in the half, first on an assist from Noah Berges to Daniel Marcano and then later in the half Berges found the net on an assist from Irwin. Coming out of the half, ball control and defense were key. An early goal by VC in the 2nd half pulled them within 2-3. Great goal keeping by Ryder Feldt (12 saves in the game), strong play from defenders Miles Mergen, James Summerall, and Reed Sulzman, and enough ball control halted any other scoring as the final score ended 3-2 in HSC’s favor.The second and afternoon slate was against Wichita native club - Azteca Jr Academy 15B. HSC figured out quickly that this was going to be a much more physical and aggressive match. Finley Zimmerman started the scoring for Hays in the first half on a break away strike. Azteca then scored to knot things up at 1-1. Later off a goalie deflection, Cameron Feldt was able to send the ball back in to put HSC up 2-1. Second half defensive effort from James Summerall, C. Feldt, Reed Sulzman, and Miles Mergen, and goals by Daniel Marcano and Ryder Feldt made the final score HSC - 4 / Azteca - 1. &nbsp;Ryder Feldt and Bryce Irwin split the halves as goalies and matched each other with 4 saves.Just4Kix Lightning 15B, another former Stryker League opponent, was the early Sunday afternoon draw for HSC. Lincoln Hamel and Daniel Marcano put two goals in quickly to put HSC up early 2-0. &nbsp;Coming in at forward in the first half, Ryder Feldt netted his 2nd goal of the tournament on a long free kick. Later in the half on a nice pass from Alex Penka, Noah Berges sent a laser in to put HSC up 4-0. &nbsp;Right before the intermission, Hamel was able to net his second goal of the half for 5 first half goals for Hays. It was a “family reunion” to start the second half as Cameron Feldt was able to find cousin Ryder Feldt on a cross for Ryder’s second goal of the game. &nbsp;A fly by the defender gave Marcano his second goal of the day. &nbsp;Later in the half, C. Feldt found Reed Sulzman for his second assist and Sulzman’s first goal. JFKL 15 was able to put 2 in goal late in the 2nd half to end it 8-2 advancing Hays into the championship game. Bryce Irwin and C. Feldt split the game as goalies with 8 and 2 saves each.In their first Wichita tournament final, HSC met Pool B winner, Black Lightning Bandidos from Wichita. BLB came out quick and aggressive and HSC found themselves down 0-2 midway through the 1st half. Bryce Irwin was able to send a nice goal in to bring HSC closer at 1-2. Another BLB goal put HSC down at the half 1-3. Starting the 2nd half, the HSC found their passing game and were able to net Irwin’s second goal of the game on an assist from Noah Berges. Off a corner kick a huge goal was put in by Finley Zimmerman to knot the match at 3-3. &nbsp;A late 2nd half goal by BLB put them up 4-3. HSC dug deep the final 4-5 minutes of the second half to put the pressure on in the BLB box. With 20-30 seconds left in the second half, HSC was awarded a corner kick and converted with Berges netting the pass from the Cameron Feldt kick with 3 seconds left to play. As ties are not allowed in championships, penalty kicks to crown the winner ensued. Kansas City's Michael Lorenzen gave up just three hits through seven innings, striking out seven and walking none. He was helped by his defense, including a diving stab of a line drive by first baseman Salvador Perez in the fourth.

Hunter Dobbins didn't allow a run in six innings for Boston, though he did have to work around trouble a couple of times. He gave up two hits in the fourth inning and a one-out triple in the fifth.

GODDARD - Kale Schwien placed 5th in Singles at the 5A Regional Tennis Tournament held Friday at Goddard-Eisenhower High School. He will complete at the 5A State Tournament in Salina on Friday May 16th.

Schwien received a bye in the first round then lost the next round 6-1, 6-3 to Naman Bhatt of Goddard-Eisenhower.&nbsp;

He defeated Young of Salina Centra 6-1, 6-1 then knocked off Ryddyk Smith of Salina Central 6-3, 6-1 in the fifth-place to qualify for state.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian Monarchs went 1-1 on the first day of
the Hays Diamond Classic, beating Brusch, Colorado, 3-1 and losing to Life Prep
5-0.

Life Prep 5, TMP 0 The Monarchs were shut out for the first time this season in
their first game of the tournament, falling 5-0 to Life Prep.

Life Prep scored two runs in each the second and third
innings. They added a solo run in the sixth inning as well.

The Fire took advantage of an error to score the game’s
first run and then added a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.

Life Prep led off the third with a walk and a two-run home run
for a 4-0 lead. 

The final run for the Fire came on a sacrifice fly in the sixth
inning in a 5-0 victory.

TMP’s Adler Brown and Grant Nehls each collected one hit for
TMP.

Nehls suffered the loss. He allowed two earned runs, four total,
on five hits in four and a third innings. He also walked five.

TMP 3, Brush 1 TMP’s Caden Dinkel allowed just one unearned run in seven innings, and Grant Nehls homered and drove in two runs as the Monarchs took down Brush,
Colorado, 3-1.

The Monarchs struck first, with one out, they loaded the bases
for Nehls, who drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left field.

After back-to-back scoreless innings, the Monarchs took

HAYS - Jalen Smith pitched a complete game shutout as the Hays High Indians knocked off the Brush Beet Diggers 5-0 Friday evening at Leo-Harper Field.

The night cap of the first day of the Diamond Classic got underway with three runs in the bottom of the first inning for Hays (12-7). Johnny Cano and Jalen Smith led off with singles. Each stole a base and Cano scored on a passed ball for the game's first run.

Brett Rhoades walked later in the inning and Trace Jacobs plated Smith and Rhoades with a single for a 3-0 advantage.

Smith allowed a one out double in the first inning. He and the Indian defense retired the next ten batters. A two-out walk in the fourth ended that streak.

The Indians added a run in each the bottom of the fourth and sixth. Cano singled home Ian McGuire in the fourth for a 4-0 advantage. Cano then laid down a bunt single up the first base line for a 5-0 lead when McGuire again scored. Cano recorded three of the Indians eight hits. McGuire had two hits.

Smith (2-2) worked around trouble in the sixth and seventh innings to earn the victory. The Beet Diggers put two on with nobody out in the sixth. Smith threw out the lead runner at third base on a ground ball for the first out of the inning. Kaleb Roe, Cano and Carter Graham combined for a double play to end the inning on the next at-bat.

Smith loaded the bases in the seventh with one out on a hit-batter and a pair of walks. He then recorded his fifth strikeout and caught an infield pop-up to end the game.

Hays improves to 1-1 at the Diamond Classic. They face Life Prep at 3:45 Saturday and then TMP following that game.

SALINA - The Hays High boys and girls each finished second as a team on Friday in Salina. Manhattan won both of the team titles.

The Hays High girls 4x100 team finished second and set a school record with a time of 49.24. Moriah Hallam, Lyndi Zimmerman, Lynsi Kanak and Kamryn McCall are members of the team. They finished behind Manhattan who ran the fastest 4x100 in state history at 46.84.&nbsp;

Zimmerman and McCall were third and sixth in the 100 meters. McCall finished fourth in the 200 meters. Zimmerman won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.20.&nbsp;

Aralen Maupin finished third in the 400 meters. Cara Cunningham was fourth in the 300 meter hurdles and Zimmerman finished fifth.

The Indians also finished second in the 4x400 relay.

Katie Linenberger jumped 5'-2" for a second place finish in high jump. Caleah Sanders was fifth at an even five feet.

McCall (17-5) and Kanak (17-5) were second and third in long jump. Rylen Harrington placed third and Brooke Bieker sixth in javelin. Zoe Winter was runner up in shot put.

Sanders, Bieker and Schmidt placed third, fourth, and sixth in the triple jump.

Taevian Maupin-Dabney placed fourth in the 400 and was followed up by Chase Zadina in sixth.

Bryce Steffan added points with a second place finish in the 300 meter hurdles and fourth in the 110 meter hurdles.&nbsp;

Kamani Jones won the long jump (21-7.5) and was runner up in the high jump.&nbsp;

Andre Pfeifer was sixth in the triple jump. Parker McGuire and Gus Corsair went second and fifth in the discus. Dalton Meyers and Wyatt Kirkpatrick were second and third in javelin.

Jaxon Chartier won the shot put at 50'1" and Caleb Englert was third.

PITTSBURG - Pittsburg State University has announced that baseball coach Bob Fornelli has disclosed his intention to retire from his position at the end of the 2025 season.

Fornelli, who has guided Pitt State to a 39-10 overall record this season, became just the fourth active NCAA Division II head coach to reach 1,100 career victories in the Gorillas' win vs. Northeastern State on Mar. 30. Fornelli has a 1,117-493 (.694) record in 29 years as a collegiate coach, including a 212-114 (.650) mark in seven seasons at the Pitt State helm.

Fornelli came to Pitt State from MIAA rival Emporia State where he fashioned a 599-266 (.692) record in 15 seasons leading his alma mater (2004-18). Fornelli guided the Hornets to 13 trips to the NCAA Division II National Tournament, two appearances in the D2 World Series and a national runner-up finish in 2009. He led ESU to five MIAA regular season crowns (2006, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2017) and a pair of MIAA Tournament titles (2007, 2014).

Prior to ESU, Fornelli compiled a 306-113 (.730) record in seven seasons at Fort Hays State where he led the Tigers to four Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference titles and six NCAA Tournament appearances, including a berth in the D2 national championship game in 2000. He remains the winningest head coach in FHSU program history. He was a 2011 inductee into the Tigers Sports Hall of Fame.

Prior to his tenure at FHSU, Fornelli served as pitching coach at Butler Community College in El Dorado, Kan., from 1992-96. The Grizzlies posted a 195-86 (.694) record during his five seasons on staff, finishing third at the NJCAA World Series in 1994.

A Lenexa, Kan., native, Fornelli earned honorable mention All-Central States Intercollegiate Conference (CSIC) honors as a catcher for ESU his senior season. He played two seasons at Butler Community College before joining the Hornets.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fornelli earned a bachelor's degree in general studies from ESU in 1991. He is married to the former Jill Harris of Madison, Kan. The couple has three adult daughters:&nbsp; Emma, Rylie and Addison.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HAYS - Two big innings led the visiting Manhattan Indians to a 12-5 win over the hometown Indians of Hays High Friday in the opening game of the Western Plains Diamond Classic at Leo-Harper Field.

Hays (11-7) was one strike away from getting out of the second inning unscathed. Manhattan had a runner at second with two outs and the batter in a 1-2 pitch count. Two walks, two hit batters, and a single later Hays was trailing 4-0.&nbsp;

Manhattan (13-4) added to their lead with two more runs in the top of the fifth. Three of the four runners that reached in the inning did so on either a walk or was hit by a pitch.&nbsp;

Hays put runners in scoring position in each the fourth and fifth innings but didn't take advantage.&nbsp;

Trailing 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth got their bats going. One out walks from Carter Graham and Kaleb Roe were driven in on a double by Trace Jacobs. Bennett Smith followed with a single that brought Jacobs in to score.&nbsp;

The inning continued with an run scoring double by Landon Hardman for a 7-4 score. Weston Werth drove in Hardman with a double for the final run. Hays closed the deficit down to 7-5.

Manhattan got all five runs back in the top of the seventh. Two errors and a three run homerun moved Manhattan back in front by seven runs at 12-5. Hays didn't threaten in the bottom of the seventh.

Trenton Welch (1-1) allowed four hits over five innings. He allowed six runs, five earned, walked five and struck out six. He hit three batters. Ian McGuire allowed three hits, three runs, walked one and struck out two in an inning plus. Landon Hardman made his season debut on the mound allowing three runs, two hits and walked one over one inning.&nbsp;

Hays will face Brush (CO) in the final game of the first day.

⚾📹 Hays High v Manhattan; Diamond Classic opening game

DODGE CITY -&nbsp;&nbsp;The Hays High softball team ran their win streak to four
straight wins, three of them over Liberal, with a sweep of the Lady Red Thursday
in Dodge City. 

The Indians won the first game 10-0 and 13-2 in the second
game. 

GAME 1: 10 HHS, Dodge 0 The Indians scored in four of five innings in the first game
of the doubleheader, and starter Jaylee Summers allowed just two hits in five
innings in a 10-0 Indians victory.

Hays’ Riley Dreher tripled to lead off the first, and Alyse Zimmerman
drove her home with a triple of her own.

Brynlee Brous singled home Zimmerman, and then Lanie Becker
doubled for a 3-0 Hays lead through the first half inning.

Hays added three more runs in the top of the second inning,
scoring on a Zimmerman single, a Brous double, and an Adalie Kippes sacrifice
fly that put Hays up 6-0.

Still leading 6-0 Hays scored a fourth inning run on a
fielder’s choice making it 7-0 Indians.

They closed out the fifth scoring three times. 

Avery Solida drove in the eighth run for Hays with ground
out.

GAME 2: HHS 13, Liberal 2 The Indians scored five runs in the first and third innings,
and Riley Dreher allowed just two hits in seven shutout innings.

Hays wasted little time breaking onto the scoreboard
with runs in the second inning.

HHS scored the game’s first run on a passed ball. With two
down in the inning, Brooklynn Dinkel doubled home a pair of runs, and then
Brynlee Brous capped off the inning with a two-run homer, putting Hays up 5-0. 

Liberal scored a run in the third, cutting Hays’ lead to
5-1, but the Indians added two runs in the fifth on a Lanie Becker RBI single
and a fielder’s choice. 

Brous drove in a run in the sixth on a ground out, and then
Hays’ offense exploded for five more runs in the seventh.

In the five-run seventh, Hays scored on a Jaycee Gibbs RBI
ground out, three straight run scoring doubles by Brynlee Rupp, Alyse Zimmerman
and Avery Solida putting Hays up 13-1.

Liberal added a run in the seven but Hays was too much for
the Lady Red in the Indians' third straight win over Liberal.

Hays is 13-8 and is scheduled to take on&nbsp;Wichita-Kapaun Mt. Carmel HS on Saturday.

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Fort Hays State Baseball saw a strong 2025 season close on Thursday in the MIAA Tournament Quarterfinals at Al Ortolani Field. The No. 3 seeded Tigers fell in 10 innings, 6-5 to the No. 6 seeded Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State in a back-and-forth battle. The Tigers finished the year at 32-16 overall, while the Bearcats moved to 26-24 and advanced to the semifinals.

Fort Hays State was not immune to a day of upsets in the MIAA Tournament as the top three seeds in the tournament all fell in the quarterfinals. No. 1 seed Central Missouri fell to No. 8 seed Missouri Southern and No. 2 seed Pittsburg State fell to No. 7 seed Washburn. No. 4 seeded Central Oklahoma was the only higher seed to survive in a win over No. 5 seed Rogers State.

The Tigers had to battle back into the game early as Ty Riley struggled with command. The Bearcats opened the game with a walk, advancement on a wild pitch, then a double and triple generated two runs before an out was ever recorded. The Bearcats plated one more run to lead by three after a half inning. They tacked on another run in the second to lead 4-0.

The Tigers went to work at the plate in the second inning, putting a quick gash in the Bearcat lead with three runs of their own. Cesar Saavedra walked to lead off the inning, then Elliott Herrmann gave the Tigers two runners in scoring position with a double. Luis Ayala and Cooper Howell had back-to-back RBI singles to cut the Bearcat lead in half, then Trey DeGarmo drove in a run with an RBI groundout. In the bottom of the third, the Tigers pulled even 4-4 with the Bearcats. Saavedra drew another walk and moved up to second on a throwing error pickoff attempt by the Bearcat pitcher. Herrmann drove him in with an RBI single.

The Tigers took their only lead of the game in the fifth when Saavedra led off with a triple and Tony Moore drove him in on an RBI groundout. However, the Bearcats matched them with a run in the sixth to level the game once again.

There were several key defensive plays in the game for both sides that kept the game tight. With the score 4-4 and no outs with two on in the top of the fifth, the Tigers turned a double play to get out of danger. Up 5-4 in the sixth, the Tigers limited damage in a bases loaded, no outs situation by getting another double play to trade two outs for a run. It helped keep the Bearcats from putting a crooked number on the board. In the top of the seventh, the Tigers kept the game tied when Brady Kreutzer threw a relay to Trey DeGarmo, who gunned down the potential go-ahead run at the plate on a double. The Tigers escaped trouble the remainder of the inning.

On the flip side, Northwest Missouri State turned a critical double play with one out and runners at first and second to end a Tiger threat. Then after taking a 6-5 lead with a pair of clutch two-out hits (single followed by an RBI double), the Bearcats turned another double play in the bottom of the 10th to squelch another potential Tiger rally and went on to win the game. Second baseman Alex Bowers had the key two-out RBI double for the Bearcats in the top of the 10th then was the turn man on the 5-4-3 double play to help secure the Bearcat win.

The Tigers had their chances to add on throughout, outhitting the Bearcats 13-7 in the contest. FHSU recorded at least one hit in every inning except the ninth, an inning where neither team had a hit.

Riley threw 78 pitches in just 3.0 innings of work and faced one batter in the fourth. He allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits and three walks, but managed to strike out four. He finished the year with 115 strikeouts, a new FHSU single-season record and for the meantime took over the NCAA Division II national lead by one.

Cade Flaherty allowed just one run in 3.0 innings of relief with one strikeout, bridging the gap to Brett Jacobs who threw the final 4.0 innings. Jacobs took the tough-luck loss with just the run allowed in the 10th after retiring 10-straight Bearcats before the two-out single and double that generated NWMSU's winning run. He struck out four and moved to 3-1 on the season.

Bearcat starter Ben Haug allowed all five Tigers runs (four earned) in 6.0 innings of work. He allowed nine hits and four walks, while recording six strikeouts. The Tigers could not solve reliever Brock Steggall, who kept the Tigers scoreless over the final 4.0 innings with one strikeout. He moved to 6-2 on the season with the win.

Isaiah Ural led the Tigers with three hits in the game (3-for-4), while Herrmann, Howell, and Ayala all had two hits. Saavedra scored three of the five Tiger runs.

The Tigers were among the 10 teams listed alphabetically in the first release of NCAA Regional Rankings, then held the No. 9 ranking in the second edition. After a trio of losses at Rogers State, FHSU fell out of the region rankings in the final release before the MIAA Tournament. The Tigers needed to win the tournament for the conference's automatic bid in hopes of extending its season into the national tournament. Central Missouri (No. 1), Pittsburg State (No. 2), and Central Oklahoma (No. 5) were all among the top five in the rankings going into the MIAA Tournament.

Fort Hays State won over 30 games for the first time since the 2010 season when it had 31. The 32 wins is the most since the 2007 when the Tigers won 33 and the 16 losses are the fewest in a full season (COVID year excluded) since FHSU went 32-16 as well in 2004.

The Bearcats opened the game with a walk, advancement on a wild pitch, then a double and triple generated two runs before an out was ever recorded. The Bearcats plated one more run to lead by three after a half inning. They tacked on another run in the second to lead 4-0.The Tigers went to work at the plate in the second inning, putting a quick gash in the Bearcat lead with three runs of their own. Cesar Saavedra walked to lead off the inning, then Elliott Herrmann gave the Tigers two runners in scoring position with a double. Luis Ayala and Cooper Howell had back-to-back RBI singles to cut the Bearcat lead in half, then Trey DeGarmo drove in a run with an RBI groundout. In the bottom of the third, the Tigers pulled even 4-4 with the Bearcats. Saavedra drew another walk and moved up to second on a throwing error pickoff attempt by the Bearcat pitcher. Herrmann drove him in with an RBI single.The Tigers took their only lead of the game in the fifth when Saavedra led off with a triple and Tony Moore drove him in on an RBI groundout. However, the Bearcats matched them with a run in the sixth to level the game once again.There were several key defensive plays in the game for both sides that kept the game tight. With the score 4-4 and no outs with two on in the top of the fifth, the Tigers turned a double play to get out of danger. Up 5-4 in the sixth, the Tigers limited damage in a bases loaded, no outs situation by getting another double play to trade two outs for a run. It helped keep the Bearcats from putting a crooked number on the board. In the top of the seventh, the Tigers kept the game tied when Brady Kreutzer threw a relay to Trey DeGarmo, who gunned down the potential go-ahead run at the plate on a double. The Tigers escaped trouble the remainder of the inning.On the flip side, Northwest Missouri State turned a critical double play with one out and runners at first and second to end a Tiger threat. Then after taking a 6-5 lead with a pair of clutch two-out hits (single followed by an RBI double), the Bearcats turned another double play in the bottom of the 10th to squelch another potential Tiger rally and went on to win the game. Second baseman Alex Bowers had the key two-out RBI double for the Bearcats in the top of the 10th then was the turn man on the 5-4-3 double play to help secure the Bearcat win.The Tigers had their chances to add on throughout, outhitting the Bearcats 13-7 in the contest. FHSU recorded at least one hit in every inning except the ninth, an inning where neither team had a hit.Riley threw 78 pitches in just 3.0 innings of work and faced one batter in the fourth. He allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits and three walks, but managed to strike out four. He finished the year with 115 strikeouts, a new FHSU single-season record and for the meantime took over the NCAA Division II national lead by one.Cade Flaherty allowed just one run in 3.0 innings of relief with one strikeout, bridging the gap to Brett Jacobs who threw the final 4.0 innings. Jacobs took the tough-luck loss with just the run allowed in the 10th after retiring 10-straight Bearcats before the two-out single and double that generated NWMSU's winning run. He struck out four and moved to 3-1 on the season.Bearcat starter Ben Haug allowed all five Tigers runs (four earned) in 6.0 innings of work. He allowed nine hits and four walks, while recording six strikeouts. The Tigers could not solve reliever Brock Steggall, who kept the Tigers scoreless over the final 4.0 innings with one strikeout. He moved to 6-2 on the season with the win.Isaiah Ural led the Tigers with three hits in the game (3-for-4), while Herrmann, Howell, and Ayala all had two hits. Saavedra scored three of the five Tiger runs.The Tigers were among the 10 teams listed alphabetically in the first release of NCAA Regional Rankings, then held the No. 9 ranking in the second edition. After a trio of losses at Rogers State, FHSU fell out of the region rankings in the final release before the MIAA Tournament. The Tigers needed to win the tournament for the conference's automatic bid in hopes of extending its season into the national tournament. Central Missouri (No. 1), Pittsburg State (No. 2), and Central Oklahoma (No. 5) were all among the top five in the rankings going into the MIAA Tournament.Fort Hays State won over 30 games for the first time since the 2010 season when it had 31. The 32 wins is the most since the 2007 when the Tigers won 33 and the 16 losses are the fewest in a full season (COVID year excluded) since FHSU went 32-16 as well in 2004.
