LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Moustapha Thiam had a career-high 28 points and led Cincinnati to an 84-68 upset of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">No. 8</a>&nbsp;Kansas on Saturday.

This was the second win of the season for Cincinnati (15-12, 7-7 Big 12) against a ranked team, having taken down&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iowa-state-cincinnati-basketball-score-ec0d2a1a062988a0f4f2707e609fdd92">then-No. 2 Iowa State 79-70</a>&nbsp;on Jan. 17.

The 7-footer Thiam made 11 of 17 shots from the field and had eight rebounds. Baba Miller added 18 points, eight assists and seven rebounds.

Jalen Celeste had 14 points and eight rebounds, shooting 4 of 8 on 3-pointers. Day Day Thomas scored 10.

Cincinnati held a 36-34 lead after a tumultuous first half that saw nine ties and 10 lead changes. The Bearcats kept the Jayhawks (20-7, 10-4) at arm’s length with timely shots to kill momentum throughout the second, only allowing Kansas to pull ahead for one possession before retaking the lead.

They delivered the final blows with a 20-8 run, surging ahead by double digits for the first time with less than five minutes to go.

The Bearcats were particularly effective from behind the 3-point line, where they made 12 of 21 attempts.

Flory Bidunga led the Jayhawks with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Fort Hays State will play its final road contest of the regular season on Saturday when it takes on Pittsburg State in Pittsburg, Kan. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at John Lance Arena. The Tigers enter at 17-9 overall and 9-8 in the MIAA, while the Gorillas are 15-11 overall and 9-7 in the MIAA.

The Tigers are coming off a tight 64-60 loss at Missouri Southern on Thursday evening in Joplin. The Tigers did not face a deficit in the game until about 13 minutes remaining. From that point, the game was a back-and-forth battle that saw 13 lead changes and six ties. Missouri Southern scored the final five points of the game, all at the free-throw line. Kyle Grill led the Tigers with 15 points, followed by Muhamed Kante with 13.

Pittsburg State is coming off an 86-70 win over Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday night. The Gorillas joined Missouri Southern in jumping FHSU in the MIAA standings by a half game. This will be the only meeting of the regular season between FHSU and PSU.

Fort Hays State holds a 92-78 advantage in the all-time series with Pittsburg State. They snapped a three-game losing string to the Gorillas with a 62-58 win last year in Hays, the only meeting of the 2024-25 season between the schools. The teams have split the last 10 meetings in Pittsburg, 5-5. FHSU's last win in Pittsburg was during the 2022-23 season.

The Tigers have the sixth-best scoring defense in the nation, allowing just 63.0 points per game. They rank 10th nationally in field goal percentage defense (39.6 percent) and seventh in 3-point field goal percentage defense (28.6 percent).

Dan Mukuna (17.0), Kyle Grill (13.3), and Jahvari Martino (11.5) all continue to average double figures in scoring for the Tigers this season. Mukuna leads in rebounding at 7.5 per game, while Lucas Hammeke heads the Tigers in assists at 3.5 per game. Muhamed Kante has provided a scoring surge of late, reaching double figures in each of the last five games.

Connor Rogers leads the Gorillas in scoring at 18.9 points per game. Mason English dishes out 5.7 assists per game, while averaging 15.4 points per game.

🎧 Eagle Radio, Hull sports broadcast schedule

Construction is complete on the Bickle-Schmidt Athletic Complex at Fort Hays State University. Those who donated $1,000 or more to the facility, along with all FHSU Difference Makers*, had the opportunity to attend an exclusive preview of the building Feb. 19.

“This impressive project was made possible through the generosity of loyal donors and community members,” said Jason Williby, president and CEO of the FHSU Foundation. “I'm thrilled this group was able to get a VIP tour and first glance of what their support made possible.”

The new 20,000-square-foot facility is located in the south end zone of Lewis Field. Construction for the highly anticipated $11.5 million project kicked off in 2024.

Head Football Coach Chris Brown, was excited to show off enhancements and advanced resources within the building at the VIP preview. “The new athletic training room within this facility will be on par with many Division I universities but will most importantly set us apart as a leader in sports medicine across the highly competitive MIAA Conference and Division II,” explained Brown.

Although the complex will be well-utilized by the Tiger football team, it will enhance training capabilities for all student-athletes. The project will be a recruitment tool, helping FHSU attract top-tier talent from those seeking competitive opportunities and state-of-the-art athletic training amenities. This addition to campus reflects the university’s commitment to keeping student-athletes healthy and performing their best.

“As we look at the future of Tiger Athletics, what unites us is our collective commitment to excellence, ensuring that all our student-athletes have access to the very best resources to learn, train, and compete – the Bickle Schmidt Athletic Complex reflects that commitment,” said FHSU Athletic Director Lisa Goddard McGuirk. 

“We are so appreciative of the unwavering support and generosity of our many dedicated donors, who represent immense Tiger pride, tradition, and a continued commitment to excellence. Their tremendous support enhances and elevates the student-athlete experience here at Fort Hays State University.”

Excitement was in the air as FHSU athletic teams had the opportunity to tour the new facility earlier this week. The first floor features a football locker room suited for 130 players, an expanded athletic training area twice the size of the previous space, and hydrotherapy pools with dedicated treatment areas to promote faster healing and rehabilitation.

Megan Wiman, a member of FHSU’s women’s soccer team, referenced how valuable it will be to have the hydrotherapy component available to student-athletes as it’s an amazing tool for recovery. A senior from Olathe, Wiman said, “As I came back from an ACL tear early in my career, it would have been so beneficial to have access to an underwater treadmill as a key piece in my recovery.” She added, “Overall, this is going to be incredible for all athletes whether they are coming back from an injury or in the peak of their season.”

The second floor of the Bickle-Schmidt Athletic Complex offers position-specific meeting rooms, coaches’ offices, and a team meeting room large enough to accommodate 130 people.

Those who donated $1,000 or more to the facility, along with all FHSU Difference Makers*, had the opportunity to attend an exclusive preview of the building Feb. 19.“This impressive project was made possible through the generosity of loyal donors and community members,” said Jason Williby, president and CEO of the FHSU Foundation. “I'm thrilled this group was able to get a VIP tour and first glance of what their support made possible.”The new 20,000-square-foot facility is located in the south end zone of Lewis Field. Construction for the highly anticipated $11.5 million project kicked off in 2024.Head Football Coach Chris Brown, was excited to show off enhancements and advanced resources within the building at the VIP preview. “The new athletic training room within this facility will be on par with many Division I universities but will most importantly set us apart as a leader in sports medicine across the highly competitive MIAA Conference and Division II,” explained Brown.Although the complex will be well-utilized by the Tiger football team, it will enhance training capabilities for all student-athletes. The project will be a recruitment tool, helping FHSU attract top-tier talent from those seeking competitive opportunities and state-of-the-art athletic training amenities. NORTON, Kan. — The TMP-Marian Monarchs basketball teams closed out the regular season Friday night with a pair of road wins over the Norton Blue Jays.

GIRLS: TMP 52, Norton 25 The TMP Lady Monarchs (14-7, 8-2 MCL) held the Norton Lady Jays to just two field goals in both the second and fourth quarters while building a double-digit lead in a 52-25 victory.

Claire Schippers opened the game with the first of her two 3-pointers and finished with a career-high 20 points as the Monarchs raced out to a 9-3 lead.

Norton closed the gap to four in the final seconds of the first quarter when Paige Koenigsman connected on a deep 3-pointer, cutting TMP’s lead to 12-8.

Koenigsman’s 3-pointer sparked a 31-5 run that spanned the entire second quarter and half of the third. TMP led 40-13 with four minutes remaining in the third quarter.

With a running clock in effect, TMP secured the 52-25 win.

Schippers led all scorers with 20 points.

The TMP girls will host a first-round substate game next Thursday.

BOYS:&nbsp; TMP 70, Norton 68 Grant Nehls scored back-to-back field goals in the final seconds Friday night, helping the Monarchs clinch the MCL regular-season championship and extend their winning streak to nine games with a 70-68 victory.

The teams traded the lead back and forth seven times in the first half and were tied nine times before TMP closed the half with a 39-30 advantage.

The Monarchs (17-5, 10-0 MCL) led by nine in the third quarter, but Norton chipped away at the deficit. After trailing by as many as nine, the Blue Jays pulled within four at 55-51 entering the fourth.

Norton took a 68-66 lead with less than 30 seconds remaining, converting four of five free throws, but the Monarchs answered.

With 24 seconds left, TMP got the ball to Grant Nehls in the post. He scored inside to tie the game at 68 and drew a foul with 13 seconds remaining.

Nehls missed the free throw, but Ian Nehls tipped the ball, and Grant Nehls secured the rebound before being tied up. The alternate possession arrow favored TMP.

On the ensuing inbound, TMP again found Nehls, who scored with just under eight seconds remaining.

Norton called a timeout but missed an errant 3-point attempt on its final possession as the Monarchs held on for the 70-68 win.

Grant Nehls led all scorers with 17 points, and Ty Schmeidler added 16.

The TMP boys will host a first-round substate game next Friday.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team wrapped up its series against Northwest Missouri State with a split on Friday, taking the continuation of Thursday's suspended game 10-8 in extra innings before falling 9-1 in the series finale. The Tigers are now 4-9 overall and 1-2 in MIAA play, while the Bearcats improve to 10-5 on the year and 2-1 in league action.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 10, Northwest Missouri State 8 (10 innings) After entering the day down 7-6 entering the eighth inning, Antonio Avila opened the resumed game with a double to left center. The senior advanced 90 feet on a groundout, but was stranded at third as the tying run.

After throwing 67 pitches on Thursday, Caleb Camp continued to work nearly 18 hours later, retiring the side in order in the eighth. Tytin Goebel led off the ninth with a single before Bret Deegan reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt. Dylan Salcido legged out an infield single two batters later, loading the bases with one out for Cooper Howell.

The shortstop came up in the clutch, driving in a pair with a single to center to give the Tigers an 8-7 lead. A one-out triple helped the Bearcats tie things up in the bottom of the ninth, but Camp got out of the inning with two strikeouts.

Garretson Cook continued a strong performance with a leadoff single in the extra frame before moving to third on two groundouts. The first baseman was able to score on a wild pitch, putting FHSU back on top, before another run came in to score on an error.

24 hours after throwing 106 pitches over the first six innings of game one Thursday, Brett Jacobs took over with two men on base in the bottom of the 10th. The junior struck out the first two batters he faced before bringing the game to a close with a bases-loaded groundout.

Camp (1-0) took the win after striking out eight batters over five-plus innings of relief, allowing just two runs on three hits. Jacobs picked up his first save of the season and the second of his career after a scoreless inning of relief.

Howell, Cook and Erick Ordonez all had three hits each in the contest, with Cook scoring three times and Howell driving in a trio of RBI.

Game 3: Northwest Missouri State 9, Fort Hays State 1 After the Tigers left two men on base in the top of the first, the Bearcats pushed across three runs on three hits in the home half of the inning. FHSU answered with a Dylan Salcido RBI single in the top of the second, but the rally ended there.

The Tigers managed baserunners in seven of the nine innings but left 11 men on base in the loss. The Bearcats added to their lead with one run in the fifth and five more in the seventh.

⚾ Tigers split with Bearcats Friday in Maryvil

LENEXA - The Hays High swimmers completed day one of the 5-1A State Swim Meet by qualifying all three of their relays for Saturday's finals.&nbsp;

Each of the relays posted season best times.

Karsen Flaska, Jace Herbers, Cedric Dunn and Chase Zadina teamed up for the 200 yard medley relay that qualified ninth. The top 16 move on to finals. The quartet went in with a seed time of 1:49.72 and bettered that with a 1:47.06 in the preliminary round. That time also set a new school record according to a Hays High School social media post.

Zadina, Maison Desaire, Durr and Flaska also qualified for the finals in the 200 yard freestyle relay in eleventh. They finished three seconds ahead of their seed time at 1:35.88. Their seed time was 1:39.04.

The top 16 move on to finals. The quartet went in with a seed time of 1:49.72 and bettered that with a 1:47.06 in the preliminary round. That time also set a new school record according to a Hays High School social media post.Zadina, Maison Desaire, Durr and Flaska also qualified for the finals in the 200 yard freestyle relay in eleventh. They finished three seconds ahead of their seed time at 1:35.88. 🏀🎥 TMP-Marian travels to Norton in regular season finale

TOPEKA, Kan. – Fort Hays State split its first two games of the Washburn Invitational on Friday. The Tigers dropped their opening contest 9-5 to Minnesota Crookston, but bounced back for a 12-2 win over Montana State-Billings in six innings. The Tigers moved to 3-4 on the season.

Highlights of the day included six hits by Hannah Green over the two games, going 3-for-5 in both, and a complete game in the pitching circle by Korryn Johnson in the 12-2 win.

Minnesota Crookston 9, Fort Hays State 5 Fort Hays State briefly held a lead in the first contest of the day through four innings, but Minnesota Crookston slipped past with six runs over the final three innings to pick up its first-ever win over FHSU. The Golden Eagles had never scored more than one run against the Tigers in the five previous meetings.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and third innings, but the Tigers cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third when Kaydawn Haag scored on an attempted double steal where the Tigers sacrificed an out for a run.

After UMC scored another run in the top of the fourth, the Tigers rallied past in the bottom half to take a 4-3 lead. Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson singled home a run, then Haag tied the game with another RBI single. Hannah Green used her speed to beat out a chopper to second base, driving in the third run of the inning.

The Golden Eagles leveled the game in the top of the fifth with a solo home run, then doubled home a run to go back on top 5-4. They added an unearned run in the sixth and another pair of unearned runs in the seventh to pull away. The Tigers countered with a single run in the bottom of the sixth, also an unearned run on an error off the bat of Audrey Gillespie.

Claire Kirby (1-2) took the loss, going 4.2 innings and allowing five runs. She struck out four. Myah Wolfe (1.1 IP), Solana Carpenter (0.1 IP), and Kamaya Soniea-Harris (0.2 IP) threw in relief and none of their combined four runs allowed were earned.

Megan Surgenor picked up the win in the pitching circle, throwing a complete game. She yielded 11 hits and walked five, while striking out six batters.

Fort Hays State 12, Montana State-Billings 2 Fort Hays State's offense was firing on all cylinders in the second game of the day, recording 17 hits. Hannah Green, Peyton Shepard, and Paige Thexton all recorded 3-hit games, while Audrey Gillespie, Abbey Duarte, and Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson all had two hits. All but one Tiger in the starting lineup recorded a hit.

The Tigers took command right out of the gate with a 5-run first inning. Duarte singled in the first run, then Ramirez-Johnson drove in two with another single. Lilly Mohr capped the big inning with a 2-RBI double. Duarte then extended the lead to 6-0 in the second inning with an RBI groundout.

MSU Billings picked up its first run in the bottom of the second, but went scoreless in the third and fourth as the Tigers continued to pull away. Gillespie drove in a run in the fourth on a single, then in the fifth Green and Shepard had back-to-back RBI doubles. The Yellowjackets picked up one more run in the fifth, but FHSU still had a commanding 9-2 lead.

Gracie Johns put an exclamation point on the win in the sixth with a 2-run laser beam homer over the left field wall. Ally Donovan was able to get a run home later in the inning by putting the ball in play and reaching by error.

Korryn Johnson picked up the first complete game of her career, going 6.0 innings with four strikeouts, while scattering seven hits. She moved to 1-1 on the season.

Fort Hays State returns to action on Saturday at noon and 2 p.m. The Tigers face Rockhurst and Drury at Washburn Rural High School. Only live stats will be available for each game.

OAKLEY — There were no lead changes in either game Thursday night as the Oakley Plainsmen and TMP-Marian Monarchs split an MCL doubleheader.

TMP fell behind early and never recovered, as its five-game winning streak came to an end. Oakley raced out to a 10-2 lead in the opening minutes and later used a 7-0 run to build a 17-5 advantage — its largest of the night.

The Lady Monarchs answered with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to four. Trailing 21-15 late in the second quarter, Brynn Rebel — who led TMP with 15 points — knocked down a corner three while drawing a foul and completed the four-point play to pull TMP within two at halftime.

The third quarter was a defensive grind, with just 11 total points scored. TMP twice trimmed the deficit to two but could not find the tying basket. Oakley opened the fourth on a 6-0 run to push the lead to nine, and TMP managed just 13 second-half points in the 45-36 loss.

The eighth-ranked Monarchs controlled the night from the outset. After a 2-2 tie, TMP buried three straight three-pointers to jump ahead 11-2. Ty Schmeidler, who led all scorers with 17 points, hit three triples in the opening quarter, and Carson Liles added another late three to give TMP a 25-11 lead after one.

The Monarchs closed the first quarter and opened the second on a 9-0 run to stretch the margin to 20. TMP outscored Oakley 16-8 in the second and led comfortably at the break.

Midway through the third, the Monarchs pushed their lead to 27 and capped the quarter with a two-handed dunk from Grant Nehls to take a 56-33 advantage into the fourth.

Oakley showed fight in the final period, outscoring TMP 21-11 behind Manuel Mancia’s 12 fourth-quarter points (26 total), but the Monarchs secured the 67-54 win despite being outscored 35-26 in the second half.

Nehls finished with 15 points and eight rebounds.

TMP is back in action Friday at Norton. The girls look to bounce back, while the boys aim to clinch the MCL regular season title.

JOPLIN, Mo. – Fort Hays State fell in a back-and-forth battle against Missouri Southern on Thursday night at Missouri Southern. The Lions scored the final five points of the game to win 64-60, moving to 15-10 overall and 9-7 in the MIAA. The Tigers moved to 17-9 overall and 9-8 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State never trailed in the first half. The Tigers opened the game on an 11-2 run, but the Lions worked their way back to tie the game at 14-14. The Tigers used a 7-1 run to go back up by six and went on to lead 30-24 at halftime.

Missouri Southern chipped away early in the second half and took its first lead of the game with just over 13 minutes to go. From that point on, the game was a back-and-forth possession-style battle. Neither team led by more than three the rest of the way until the very end when Missouri Southern hit a pair of free throws with three seconds left to secure the win. The second half saw 13 lead changes and six ties in the competitive final 13 minutes. The Tigers had three offensive possessions in the final minute and a half, but could not find a critical basket. Missouri Southern scored its final five points of the game at the free-throw line in the final three minutes.

Kyle Grill led the Tigers with 15 points, all scored in the first half. Muhamed Kante extended his streak of scoring in double figures to five games with 13 points. Grill and Dan Mukuna each pulled down eight rebounds and Lucas Hammeke dished out a team-best three assists.

Jaden Taylor led the Lions with 14 points, followed by Isaiah Atwater with 13. Hunter Fitch had 12 and Tyrone Wright added 10. Wright and Colin Ruffin each had a team-high nine rebounds.

Fort Hays State looks to bounce back at Pittsburg State on Saturday (Feb. 21). Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at John Lance Arena in Pittsburg.

Hays used a big third quarter to seize control of the contest winning over Garden City 50-36 to capture their third consecutive Western Athletic Conference title.

Neither team found much offense in the first half that ended tied at 17. Hays (19-1, 6-0) scored the first two points of the game but then went cold for four minutes. Garden City (13-8, 4-3) started by making their first four shots and taking a 10-2 advantage at the 5:56 mark.

Garden City didn't score for the next 8:16 of the games. The Indians could only manage seven points in that same stretch. All of the points were scored by Zoe Winter in the first quarter.

Trailing 10-7, Hays saw Garden City score the first five points of the quarter near the midway point for a 15-7 advantage. The Indians finally found some offense and scored the next 10 points. Molly Buckles scored a basket but missed a free throw on a three point opportunity. A Ramiyah Turner offensive rebound gave the Indians another chance with the ball that led to a Kinslee Newell three pointer at 15-12.&nbsp;

The run continued with Jenna Schmeidler's only two first half points and the first career three by Haley LaBarge for a 17-15 Hays lead. Garden City scored the final two points of the first half for a 17-17 tie at halftime.

The third quarter is where Hays took control. The Indians were just 2 for 14 on three point attempts in the first half. Hays missed their first two of the second half then caught fire making their next six. The Indians used an 11-0 and 9-0 third quarter run to build their lead as big as 18 points at 42-24 on a Brynlee Rupp three pointer.&nbsp;

Hays led by 16 going to fourth quarter and quickly went on a 14-1 run to remove any doubt in the outcome. The Indians remained perfect in conference play with the 56-30 victory.

The victory is the 25th straight WAC win for the Indians. Hays made double-digit three pointers for a fourth time this season.

Boys #9 Hays 64 - Garden City 45

Hays scored on their first nine possessions of the game on the way to a 64-45 victory over Garden City.

Each of the five starters for Hays (16-4, 6-0) scored one of the team's first give field goals as the Indians raced out to an early lead. Hays continued a super efficient first quarter making nine of their first eleven shots. The only two field goals Hays missed were rebounded by Izaac Fox and put in for two points each.

Hays led 20-7 after one quarter and took a 22-10 lead after a pair of Trey Oakley free throws with 6:17 remaining before halftime. That is when the fire alarms sounded and paused the game. The facility had to be evacuated and halted the Indians' momentum.

Garden City (10-11, 3-4) came out of the break outscoring Hays 6-2 to get within eight points at 24-16. That was the closest the Buffaloes would get for the remainder of the night. Dawson Ruder and Fox combined for a 10-4 run to closeout the first half with a 34-20 lead.

Garden City went to a zone defense in an attempt to slow down the Indian inside game. Brody Harmoney opened the half with the second of his three, three point field goals and was followed shortly after by a Trey Oakley conventional three point play at 40-22.&nbsp;

Hays slowly built the lead over the remaining five minutes of the third quarter. Fox, Miles Day, and Bryce Homeier scored six quick points for the the first twenty lead point lead of the night at 46-24. The Indians led 51-28 after the third quarter.

Hays led by as many as 26 in the fourth quarter at 61-36 before Garden City scored eight in a row to keep the Indians from going up by thirty and enacting a continuous clock.

Day converted a three point play for the final Hays points in a 64-45 victory.

Hays remains atop the Western Athletic Conference standings with the victory. Izaac Fox recorded his ninth double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Dawson Ruder led Hays with 17 points and Trey Oakley scored 11.

The Indians host Dodge City for Senior Night on Tuesday. They will head to Great Bend next Friday to close the regular season.

🏀 Hays High sweeps Garden City; girls take WAC title

JOPLIN, Mo. - The sixth-ranked Fort Hays State women's basketball team dropped its third game of the season Thursday, losing 78-67 at Missouri Southern. The Tigers (23-3, 14-3 MIAA) led by as many as seven in the early going, but 28 second-chance points and 24 points off turnovers helped the Lions (18-7, 12-4 MIAA) emerge victorious.

The visitors started off strong, hitting five of their first eight from the floor to build an 11-4 lead over the first four minutes of play. The Lions answered with an 8-0 run to take the lead before the teams traded baskets the rest of the way, leading to a 20-18 MSSU lead after 10 minutes.

The trend of runs continued in the second, with the Lions scoring the first seven points before an 8-0 Tiger run narrowed the gap to one, 27-26. The Tigers eventually tied things up three separate times, but the Lions never gave up the lead. MSSU led by seven late in the frame, but a 3-pointer from Avery Lowe helped FHSU pull within 45-41 at the break.

Ellie Stearns opened the second half with her third 3-pointer of the game, but that would be the closest FHSU would be for the rest of the night. Both teams hit 7-of-15 from the floor in the third, but the Lions hit five more free throws to stretch their lead to 66-57.

The Tigers closed within six points on three separate occasions in the fourth, but FHSU hit just 3-of-13 from the floor in the final frame to thwart any comeback effort.

Olivia Mortensen led all scorers with 20 points, with Talexa Weeter adding 17 points and Stearns chipping in 13.

Weeter now has 714 points this year, becoming the second FHSU player and the fifth in the MIAA to reach 700 points in a single season. She is the first MIAA player to do so in 20 years and the first Tiger since Annette Wiles during FHSU's championship run in 1990-91.

Brooke Loewe distributed 11 assists, giving the senior 268 on the year, three shy of the MIAA record that has stood for 27 years.

The Tigers were outrebounded by eight, 40-32, and outscored in the paint by a dozen, 48-36.

Fort Hays State will look to bounce back Saturday (Feb. 21) when the Tigers take on Pittsburg State in Pittsburg, Kan. beginning at 1:30 p.m.

🏀 No. 6 Tiger women tripped up at Missouri Southern

MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Fort Hays State baseball team opened conference play Thursday (Feb. 19) at Northwest Missouri State, with the Tigers dropping game one on a walk off base hit before game two was suspended due to darkness with the Bearcats leading 7-6 after seven innings. Fort Hays State is now 3-8 overall and  0-1 in MIAA play, while the Bearcats improve to 9-4 on the year and 1-0 in conference play.

Game 1: Northwest Missouri State 11, Fort Hays State 10 The Tigers never trailed in the opener until the final at bat of the contest, taking advantage of a pair of walks to jump in front in the top of the first when Erick Ordonez drove in the first run with a single. The Bearcats responded in the home half with a solo home run, tying things at 1-1.

FHSU regained the lead in the top of the third when Cooper Howell worked a leadoff walk. Garrettson Cook later singled to put runners on the corners before Derek Woolwine plated the go-ahead run with a sacrifice bunt. Woolwine drove in another run with a single down the first-base line in the top of the fifth, plating Antonio Avila to make it a 3-1 lead.

The home team responded with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth, tying the score thanks to a pair of extra-base knocks. But FHSU answered right away, plating five unearned runs in the top of the sixth to take a commanding 8-3 lead.

Dylan Salcido worked another leadoff walk before Justin Lipka and Alvin Santiago both reached on errors off sacrifice bunt attempts. One run scored on the second sac bunt before two runs came in on a throwing error following a sacrifice fly. Cook kept things rolling with his first career home run, recording FHSU's first hit in the five-run inning.

Lipka led off the top of the seventh with a single before coming in to score on an infield groundout, pushing the Tiger lead to six, 9-3.

Northwest, the league leaders in home runs, tallied its second long ball of the game with a two-run bomb in the seventh, closing within 9-5 before adding another run following two free passes in the seventh.
