HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State improved to 17-5 overall and 12-4 in the MIAA with a 66-45 win over Newman University on Thursday night. The No. 23 ranked Tigers limited the Jets to less than 25 points in each half and pulled away in the second half. Newman fell to 6-15 overall and 3-13 in the MIAA.

Fort Hays State never trailed in the game, taking the lead 17 seconds into the contest and held the lead for the remainder of the night. The Tigers opened the game on a 6-0 run and eventually led by 14 four times in the opening half before the Jets closed with a 5-0 burst before halftime. FHSU led 30-24 at the half.

The Tigers countered that Jet run at the end of the first half with a 5-0 run of their own to open the second half. Newman got within nine points one time before FHSU took its lead into double digits for the final 18 minutes of the game. The Tigers reached a lead of 21 three times in the second half, including the final margin after Nathan Hawk&nbsp;hit a pair of free throws under a minute to play.

The Tigers limited the Jets to 34.7 percent shooting from the field, including a 19 percent effort beyond the 3-point line. The Jets hit only four 3-point field goals, a third of what they hit against the Tigers earlier in the season in Wichita. Boston Stanton III was the only Jet player to reach double figures in scoring with 11. FHSU held Newman's leading scorer Stevie Strong to just four points.

Elijah Nnanabu&nbsp;led the Tigers with 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting from the field and went 4-of-4 at the free-throw line. He has reached double figures in scoring in six straight games now. Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;added 12 points and led the team in rebounds (7) and assists (6). Hammeke became the fourth player in FHSU history to have 1,400 points and 400 assists in a career with his second assist of the game. He now has 1,465 points and 404 assists in his career.

The Tigers finished the game at 45.5 percent from the field overall. They went 10-of-10 at the free-throw line. FHSU held an opponent to less than 50 points in a game for the ninth time this season and lowered its NCAA Division II best scoring defense to 57.2 points per game.

Fort Hays State now prepares to host Central Oklahoma on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Tigers defeated the Bronchos earlier this season in Edmond when the Bronchos were ranked No. 5 in the nation. UCO brings a record of 17-7 overall and 9-7 in the MIAA into Saturday's contest.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HAYS, Kan. - The Fort Hays State women's basketball team pulled away from the Newman Jets in the fourth quarter Thursday evening, winning 76-57. The Tigers (17-5, 11-5 MIAA) trailed by as many as eight before outscoring the Jets (2-20, 1-15 MIAA) by 18 in the final frame, 28-10.

It was the Olivia Hollenbeck&nbsp;show early on, with the junior forward scoring the first 12 points of the game for the Tigers en route to 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting in the first quarter alone. Newman countered by hitting four 3-pointers and knocking down 56.3 percent in the first quarter, giving the Jets a 23-21 lead after 10 minutes of action.

Both sides struggled to score early in the second quarter, with the teams combining to hit just two field goals over the first six-plus minutes of the frame. Newman eventually led by as many as eight, 33-25, with 2:35 to go until halftime before the Tigers mounted a rally. Fort Hays State scored the final eight points of the half, sparked by a pair of free throws that gave Hollenbeck 22 first-half points.

Megan Earney&nbsp;buried a 3-pointer on the next possession that cut the deficit to three, 35-32, before&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/katie-wagner/7531">Katie Wagner</a>&nbsp;corralled a rebound with five seconds on the clock and raced the length of the floor to convert a layup through traffic. Wagner opened the rally with a layup off a pass from Sydney Golladay&nbsp;before she finished the run with another driving layup off an assist from Emma Ruddle.

A late third-quarter 3-pointer from the Jets cut the FHSU lead to one and Newman tied the score early in the fourth on a free throw, but it was all Tigers over the final 9:05. Fort Hays State was nearly perfect down the stretch, hitting 11-of-13 from the floor over the last nine-plus minutes while turning the ball over just once. The Tiger defense was just as potent down the stretch, forcing six turnovers thanks to five steals during that stretch.

Earney kicked off a game-sealing 28-9 run with her second 3-pointer of the game, putting the Tigers in front once and for all. Kate Dilsaver&nbsp;followed with a driving layup before Jessie Sallach&nbsp;knocked down a fadeaway jumper to pad the lead to six. Brooke Loewe&nbsp;added a pair of 3-pointers, ultimately scoring all 11 of her points in the final stanza.

After surpassing her career-high in scoring in the third quarter, Hollenbeck knocked down a free throw with 2:16 to go for her 30th and final point of the night, moving her into 14th on the all-time scoring list (1,258 career points) at FHSU passing Tatyana Legette. It is the third time a Tiger has scored 30 or more points in a game this season and is tied for the second-most points scored by a Tiger this year. The Lincoln, Neb. native added seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks on the defensive end.

Wagner turned in another dominant performance, totaling 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting while grabbing seven rebounds, dishing out six assists and adding two steals. Loewe (4-of-4, 11 points) and Earney (2-of-2, six points) were both perfect from the floor.

The Tigers finished the game shooting right at 50 percent from the floor (29-of-58) while winning the rebound battle by three, 34-31. The Tigers dominated in the paint, outscoring the Jets 42-18 under the basket.

Fort Hays State will wrap up the weekend homestand Saturday when the Tigers host Central Oklahoma beginning at 2 p.m. inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fort Hays State leads the all-time series with Newman 45-11. The Tigers are 26-2 against the Jets in Hays, currently riding a 17-game win streak against the Jets in Hays. The Tigers are looking to bounce back from a tough 64-61 double overtime loss at Northwest Missouri State this past weekend. It was a battle between NABC Top 25 teams with the Bearcats ranked No. 16 and the Tigers ranked No. 24. The result created a split in the regular-season series between the teams after FHSU won the first between the teams in Hays. Prior to the loss, FHSU was on a four-game win streak, which matched its longest of the season. Both FHSU and NMSU moved up in the NABC Top 25 this week, NWMSU now at No. 12 and FHSU at No. 23.

Newman is currently riding a nine-game losing streak entering Thursday. The Jets' last win was the overtime win over FHSU back on December 17 in Wichita. The Fort Hays State&nbsp;women's basketball team returns home to host the Newman Jets Thursday evening (Feb. 8), with opening tip slated for 5:30 p.m.

The Tigers (16-5, 10-5 MIAA) are looking for their 16th-consecutive win over Newman, while the Jets (2-19, 1-14) are trying to snap an eight-game losing skid.

After playing nine of their first 15 conference games on the road, the Tigers will wrap up the regular season by hosting five of their final seven games at home. Fort Hays State will have several tests down the stretch, including games against four of the top seven teams in the conference standings.

Fort Hays State currently sits in a tie for third in the league standings alongside Northwest Missouri State and Pittsburg State. The Tigers are three games behind top-ranked Missouri Southern and two games back of second-place Missouri Western.

The Tigers are led in scoring by&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/katie-wagner/7531">Katie Wagner</a>, with the junior ranking fifth in the MIAA with an average of 16.6 points per game.

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco was relaxed Wednesday as reporters peppered him with questions, the opposite of his running style that has commonly been described as angry.

When asked how he would describe his style, Pacheco deferred to the experts, or in this case the media.

Kansas City coach Andy Reid had his own description, calling Pacheco “a violent runner.”

If any player could actually run through a wall, it would be Pacheco, who punishes linebackers and defensive backs trying to bring him down.

“That starts with practice at the beginning of the week when we prepare,” Pacheco said. “I go out there with a full head of steam knowing the down and distance, getting 4 yards or whatever it may be to win the down.”

The Chiefs will need Pacheco's ability to move the chains to balance Patrick Mahomes' passing attack when they play the San Francisco 49ers in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/super-bowl">Super Bowl</a>&nbsp;on Sunday.

Pacheco, though, knows how to keep an event even as enormous as the Super Bowl in perspective.

He has suffered enormous loss away from the field, which likely fuels his play on it. Pacheco downplayed the effect of losing two siblings in his home state of New Jersey as a reason he runs so hard, saying he always had the fire inside him.

His brother, Travoise Cannon, was fatally stabbed in 2016. He was 29. Pacheco's sister, Celeste Cannon, died the following year after being shot in the head by a man who shared a child with her. She was 24.

Pacheco was in high school at the time, forcing him to grow up fast. He had the chance to leave New Jersey and play college ball elsewhere, but opted to remain in the state and play at Rutgers.

His best season was his sophomore year when Pacheco rushed for 729 yards and seven touchdowns. He failed to match those numbers his final two seasons, making Pacheco a borderline NFL prospect.

The Chiefs saw enough in him to take Pacheco in the seventh round of the 2022 draft, but a selection that late is far from a sure thing to even make the roster.

Pacheco not only made the team, he started 11 games, played in all 17 and rushed for 830 yards on 4.9 yards per play. This season, Pacheco started 13 games and gained 935 yards on a 4.6 average. He has a combined 12 touchdown runs both seasons.

“Stay patient," Pacheco said. “No matter where you go, where you come from, when you get that opportunity, make the best of it, special teams or wherever. Be the difference.”

Reid put Pacheco in select company when comparing him to another back.

“I hate even mentioning this because he was a 49er, but Roger Craig was a violent runner,” Reid said. “He was coming at you with knees, elbows, everything coming at you at one time. They're built kind of the same way.”

Craig, who played from 1983-93, could make plays in the running and passing game. He twice gained more than 2,000 yards from scrimmage, including in 1988 when he was The Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year.

He played on three Super Bowl champions with the 49ers.

Pacheco is off to a promising start with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/super-bowl-2023-kansas-city-chiefs-philadelphia-eagles-43a1fb387f63438c1eea23b6a4244d95?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share">last year's title</a>&nbsp;with the Chiefs and the chance to beat San Francisco this weekend. He is the fourth back to start a Super Bowl in each of his first two seasons, joining Duane Thomas and Tony Dorsett of the Dallas Cowboys and Chuck Foreman of the Minnesota Vikings.

The Niners, however, could present quite a challenge for Pacheco. They were fifth in the NFL this season in rush defense, allowing just 97 yards per game.

But San Francisco took a step back in the playoffs, allowing 136 yards on the ground to Green Bay and 182 to Detroit. But the 49ers also shut down the Lions in the second half, allowing just 34 yards rushing.

“It's a great defense over there,” Pacheco said. “I'm looking forward to competing against them. All 11 guys fly to the ball.”

Hays High School Athletic Director Lance Krannawitter informed Hays Post that at Wednesday's Western Athletic Conference meetings, the optional trial of shot clock usage had been voted in.

"The WAC approved the implementation of the 35 second shot clock trial for all WAC games and home games vs non-conference opponents beginning next school year 2024-25.  As per the KSHSAA trial policy, this will not include the post season."

🏀 WAC adopts shot clock for 2024-25 season

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs could be without three key players when they play the San Francisco 49ers in Sunday's Super Bowl.

Wide receiver Kadarius Toney appeared to get into a dispute with Chiefs management about a hip injury that sidelined him for six games,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-kadarius-toney-injury-c54698984638431a30f774c9c8f87a7f?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share">going on Instagram</a>&nbsp;to say he didn't receive the proper injury designation for the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/sports/patrick-mahomes-ii-san-francisco-49ers-kansas-city-chiefs-ba490c08f34b0929aeaa08f1106841df?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share">AFC championship game</a>&nbsp;at Baltimore on Jan. 28.

But he told NFL Network on Monday that his expletive-filled rant was aimed at a New York Giants fan and not the Chiefs and called his outburst a mistake.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid didn't commit Tuesday to playing Toney, opening the way for a potential healthy scratch.

“We'll see how that goes,” Reid said. “He's been practicing, and we'll see whether he's up or not.”

Also, Reid wasn't optimistic running back Jerick McKinnon or guard Joe Thuney would play.

McKinnon has been on injured reserve since Dec. 24 with a groin injury and hasn't practiced.

“It's slim for him to be out there,” Reid said.

Thuney didn't play against the Ravens because of a pectoral injury.

“It's strength and making sure that he's in a position that he doesn't get hurt worse than what he's got,” Reid said. “We'll see (whether Thuney practices). I think it's a long shot.”

49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks called out his unit last week for not playing hard on every play of their&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/49ers-lions-score-nfc-championship-bed96677697deb0dfb1fa757288ab4bb?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share">34-31 victory over the Detroit Lions</a>&nbsp;in the NFC championship game.

“That's something that never needs to be coached,” Gipson said. "That's something that never needs to be addressed. This is the National Football League. You're here on the biggest stage. Those plays are unacceptable. Led to two touchdowns.

“That film (session) was hard. Obviously, you had to see that. You had to hear some choice words. But that's not our brand of football. We're a lot better football team than that, so it's not something I'm worried about moving forward.”

San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said lack of effort was an issue, but there were other problems the Niners had in trying to stop Detroit's running attack in the first half. The Lions rushed for 148 yards in the first 30 minutes, but only 34 after that.

“When you play an eight-man front, it just takes one guy to out of the gap for there to be only one (defender) left,” Shanahan said. “That's stuff we've got to do a lot better at.”

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt was at a function about a week ago when a woman in her mid-20s approached him. She explained that she was never a football fan, even though everyone else in her family was a Dallas Cowboys diehard, but that as a devoted Swiftie, she keenly followed&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/travis-kelce-taylor-swift-super-bowl-d0fe0d21f00b68a5d99d8d6a29d3cded">pop superstar Taylor Swift's every move</a>.

Naturally, that means she now keenly follows the Chiefs.

Ever since the 14-time Grammy-winning songstress began dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce last year, the franchise has seen a noticeable growth among fans in what Hunt called “that young female demographic.” They are driving up TV ratings for games, buying merchandise and apparel by the truckload, and throwing their lot into a team some of them knew nothing about.

“There's no doubt that her being a fan has put more intense focus on the team than we would have had otherwise, and has opened up the fanbase to a whole new demographic that we really didn't have,” Hunt told a small group of reporters on Tuesday.

“Having Taylor as a Chiefs fan is very unique,” Hunt added. “I don't ever do an interview without someone asking me about it. I frequently have dads come up to me and say, ‘My 10-to-12-year-old daughters never used to watch football, but now they tell me any time the Chiefs are playing to tell them, so they can come and watch.'”

All those Swifties will no doubt be watching the Super Bowl. Swift is expected&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/taylor-swift-grammys-tokyo-super-bowl-kelce-d46418de25e985f77ab7a7ada337d2a0">to make a mad dash from Tokyo</a>, where she will be performing on her Eras Tour the previous night, across the Pacific so that she can arrive in Las Vegas in time for kickoff.

Iowa's Caitlin Clark, the reigning women's college basketball player of the year, continues to sell out arenas at home and on the road as she&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/clark-iowa-17ec06df5686924441b7b3b9ed731cca?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share">chases the NCAA Division I scoring record</a>.

Her brother was the backup quarterback at rival Iowa State to 49ers second-year starter Brock Purdy. Blake Clark will be the best man in Purdy's upcoming wedding.

“Caitlin, I wasn’t around as much, but obviously just through Blake, we’d always watch her,” Purdy said. “What a baller she was from day one. Obviously, even high school. We knew that she was going to be a game changer. To see her now, just absolutely killing it, couldn’t be happier for her.”

Clark is 66 points from breaking the NCAA record of 3,527 held by former Washington star and current Las Vegas Aces All-Star Kelsey Plum.

HAYS - Hays High hosted a pair of state ranked McPherson teams on Tuesday night. The boys team for McPherson entered as the #1 team in 4A while the girls checked in at #5. The Hays boys entered the rankings for the first time at #10 in 5A.

Hays High used an 11-0 third quarter run to grab the lead for good over state ranked McPherson on their way to a 44-41 victory.

Neither team held much of a first half advantage as the score was tied four times and the lead exchanged on seven occasions. The Indians scored six straight to grab a 6-3 advantage before the Bullpups fired back with a 10-3 run to lead by four points. The last points of the quarter belonged to Hays to close their first quarter gap down to 13-11.

Hays trailed by a first half high five points in the second quarter before scoring six straight to grab the lead at 19-18. The teams traded the lead the next three possessions. Five quick points by Hays put the Indians up 26-24, but McPherson beat the second quarter buzzer with a 24 foot three pointer for a 27-26 halftime advantage.

McPherson scored the first five points of the third quarter for a 32-26 advantage, their largest lead of the game. The Bullpups didn't score for the remaining 5:45 of the quarter. Hays scored 11 straight points to lead 37-32 into the fourth.

Hays never trailed in the fourth quarter but it wasn't easy to take the win. Hays built their lead to seven with 2:20 remaining at 41-34 but couldn't take advantage of having the ball up by that score. McPherson was able to hit a pair of field goals to get within two points at 41-39 with one minute to go. McPherson did get the ball down two but turned it over. Hays made three of four free throws in the final 25 seconds to win 44-41.

Molly Martin led all scoring with 18. Zoe Winter recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Hays improves to 10-5 while McPherson drops to 11-4.

#1-4A McPherson outscored #10-5A Hays 27-15 in the second half on their way to a 56-45 victory.

Things couldn't have started better for the Indians, scoring the first eight points and forcing a McPherson timeout. Hays would build their advantage as high as nine points in the first quarter at 16-7. The Indians had the ball but couldn't score at the rim. McPherson trimmed five points off the lead by the end of the quarter leaving the Indians leading 16-12.

Hays again was able to push the lead to seven and eight points on several occasions. The last was 27-20 with 4:20 left before halftime. The Indians didn't score for the next 3:50. The Bullpups went on a 9-0 run to take their first lead at 29-27. Hays would be the team to score last in the first half and grab a 30-29 halftime lead.
