A prolonged lightning delay created a delay in the availability of results. Six Tigers competed in field events, with four of the six clearing the national qualifying threshold with their performance. After improving his PR by nearly 10 feet last week at the MIAA Championships,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/kolgan-ohl/7186">Kolgan Ohl</a>&nbsp;topped that once again on Friday. 👟 Tigers record four national qualifying marks in the field at Concordia

PHILLIPSBURG – The Hoxie boys and Phillipsburg girls won the
Mid-Continent League track and field meet Friday. 

The Indians won five events and scored 158 points, 42 more
than second place Norton who won six events. Smith Center finished in third
place with 58.5 points. The Panther girls won six events and scored 114 points,
12 more than second place Norton. Ellis finished third with 75.

Hoxie’s Drew Bretz won four gold medals. He won the 400
(51.10) and 800 (2:07.89) and was on the first place 4x400 relay team 3:29.58) along
with Ryan Shaw, Jonathan Mader and Kane Epp. Bretz was also on the first place
4x800 relay team (8:49.23) along with Connor Diercks, Duncan Bell and Levi
Gleason. Hoxie’s other first place finish was from Aaron Keith in the 3200 meters
(10:50.33).

Norton’s Dean Clark also won four gold medals. He won the 100
(11.28) and 200 (23.19) meters along with the triple jump (45-07.50) and he was
on the winning 4x100 relay (44.14) along with Silas Jones, Tyler Backman and Tyce
Melvin. Lucas Kenney won the shot put (49-07.50), Logan Willour the discus
(147-00) and Wyatt Hammond the javelin (189-00).

Russell had two first place finishers. Trey Zorn won the 1600
meters (4:57.26) and Jace Peerman the high jump (6-09.0). 

Smith Center’s Garrett Wanner won both the 110 (15:57) and 300
hurdles (42.12).

Mason Younger of Ellis won the pole vault (12-03.00) and
Plainville’s Carter Cellmer won the long jump (20-09.00).

The Phillipsburg girls were led by Heather Schemper who won the
200 meters (26.42), 400 meters (57.52), the long jump (18-01.0) and she was
also on the winning 4x100 meter relay team along with Kayla Jacobs, Trinitti
Gross and Taryn Sides. Caydence Corman won the pole vault (9-03.0), Austin
Dierking won the shot put (39-06.75) and Kaelyn Means the discus (130-02).

Norton won four events. Mackenzie Clydesdale finished first
in the 800 (2:25.87), Jaelyn Rumback won the 300 hurdles (48:04). Both were a part
of the first place 4x800 relay along with Savana Rumback and Payton Bailey. Jenessa
Ruder javelin (137-08).

Avery Boydston of Ellis won the 1600 (5:45.32) and 3200 meters
(12:02.86).

TMP-Marian’s Shalee Gottschalk won the 100 hurdles (15.98)
and finished second in the 300 hurdles (50.36).

Plainville won three events. Jada Rathbun the 100 meters
(13.40), Gracie Kerns won the triple jump (35-05.5 ) and the 4x100 relay team
of Emily Bainter, Sofie Gourley, Grayce Schieferecke and Madison Maier. (51.74)
also finished in first place.

Oakley’s Bella Hudson won the high jump (5-02.0).

👟 Hoxie boys, Phillipsburg girls win the MCL meet

MILWAUKEE (AP) — This was the kind of night Owen Miller dreamed of having when he learned he'd be coming home to play for the Milwaukee Brewers.

Miller went 3 for 4 with a homer and a double to back up Corbin Burnes' six shutout innings as the Brewers defeated the Kansas City Royals 5-1 on Friday night.&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Brewers/status/1657191554602106880">Miller's homer</a>&nbsp;was his first since the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mlb-sports-oakland-athletics-josh-bell-milwaukee-brewers-d9759d08cd8c8d0a8a76b36244e624b2">Brewers acquired</a>&nbsp;the Wisconsin native from the Cleveland Guardians last December.

“I'll have to go back and listen to (Brewers broadcaster Bob) Uecker on the radio on that one” said Miller, who was born in the Milwaukee suburb of Mequon and played at Ozaukee High School in Fredonia, Wisconsin. “I know my grandma, she'd be proud of that one. She'd always have Uecker on when I was little.”

Miller homered in the third inning, doubled in the fifth and singled and scored in the seventh for his fifth career three-hit game. Three of those games have come against the Royals.

Milwaukee's victory, coupled with the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mlb-sports-baltimore-orioles-pittsburgh-pirates-washington-nationals-22aef117e7bb046046e976b81792b036">Pittsburgh Pirates' 6-3 loss</a>&nbsp;to the Baltimore Orioles, enabled the Brewers to regain a half-game lead in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mlb.com/standings">NL Central.</a>&nbsp;The Brewers have won just three of their last 11 games, but the Pirates have lost 10 of 11.

“We don't want to watch the standings this early in the year,” Burnes said. “I think if we go out and play the baseball we can, all that will take care of itself. Obviously, we haven't played our best baseball probably the last two weeks. There's a lot more in there that we can do better, really all across the board. I think it's going to come down to us playing the best baseball we can and not worrying about what the rest of the league's doing or where the standings are at.”

Burnes (4-2) settled down after some early control issues. He struck out seven and allowed only two hits while throwing a season-high 104 pitches.

“I think the fifth and sixth innings were probably my best innings as far as getting ahead and attacking the zone,” Burnes said. “I've just got to do a better job from the get-go. There's no reason why I shouldn't throw six innings. To do it with 100-plus pitches is a little ridiculous.”

Burnes' four walks were one off his career high, but the Royals failed to capitalize.

“That's what good pitchers do," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “They find a way. I'm sure he would say that's probably not his best night, best command or whatever, but he found a way to execute.”

Kansas City got just three hits all night and scored its only run on Freddy Fermin’s two-out homer in the seventh off Joel Payamps. The Royals were seeking their first three-game winning streak of the season.

The Brewers took a lead they wouldn’t relinquish by scoring an unearned run off Josh Taylor (0-1) in the first inning. Willy Adames drew a two-out walk, stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on Christian Yelich’s infield single.

Taylor made his second career start out of 131 appearances and lasted one inning in what was a designed bullpen game for the Royals. Max Castillo replaced Taylor and allowed two runs, three walks and six hits in 4 1/3 innings while throwing 80 pitches.

Miller extended the lead to 2-0 when he led off the third by ripping an 0-2 slider from Castillo into the left-field seats. The 404-foot drive was Miller’s first homer of the season.

C Salvador Perez was scratched from the Royals’ starting lineup Friday due to what Quatraro described as “a little bit of blurry vision.” The Royals’ original lineup had Perez leading off as the designated hitter.

Quatraro said Perez already had received treatment from a specialist. “It’s nothing long-term or serious,” Quatraro said.

RHP Zack Greinke (1-4, 5.18 ERA) pitches for the Royals and RHP Adrian Houser (0-0, 3.86) starts for the Brewers on Saturday night.

HAYS - Hays High softball finished up their regular season schedule by hosting Manhattan and Newton on Friday. The Indians win a pitchers dual 1-0 over Manhattan then double-up Newton 4-2 in their regular season finale.

Game 1: Hays 1, Manhattan 0 The first game of the day was a gem between Hays and Manhattan. Aubree Thomas and the Indians' defense worked seven shutout innings before Hays scored the only run of the game.

Riley Dreher singled to lead off the seventh. Lakyn Zimmerman drove a pitch to right center field for a double that sent home Dreher. Those two hits were half of the Hays total for the game.

Thomas (10-3) took the win allowing six hits, walking none and striking out four. Manhattan's Kierra Goos (8-5) threw six innings, striking out twelve and walking just one. She allowed just five baserunners all game.

Manhattan had runners aboard in every inning but one. Their best chance to score came in the fourth with runners at second and third. The third out of the inning came on runner interference on a ball headed to the shortstop.

Game 2: Manhattan 9, Newton 2 Manhattan scored runs in every inning but the first on their way to a 9-2 win over Newton. The Indians recorded 12 hits.

Kierra Goos (9-5) threw all seven innings striking out 12 and walking a pair to earn the victory.

Newton did push two runs across the plate in the sixth inning on a hit, a Manhattan error, passed ball and wild pitch.

Newton had five errors in the game. Abby Koontz took the loss for the Railers.

Manhattan finishes the regular season at 15-5.

Game 3: Hays 4, Newton 2 Hays plated single runs in four different innings to grab a 4-2 win over Newton to close the night. The Railers scored in the top of the first inning on a pair of singles and a double steal.

Hays got the run back in the first when Aubree Thomas moved from first to third on a sacrifice bunt and then made it home on a throwing error. The Indians took the lead for the first time in the first time in the bottom of third on a Newton error.

Newton tied the game one more time at two runs a piece on a solo home run to open up the fourth inning.&nbsp;

Avery Solida scored on a double by Thomas in the fourth and Riley Dreher scored on a passed ball in the fifth for the 4-2 victory.

Thomas (11-3)&nbsp; worked seven innings for a second time on the day for the victory allowing two runs on five hits and striking out seven. It is her 30th career win.

🥎 Hays finishes season with sweep of Manhattan and Newton

HAYS - The TMP-Marian baseball team closed out their regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Garden City Friday at the Monarch Baseball Complex. TMP ended a four-game losing streak with a 17-2 run-rule victory in game one. They took the second contest 13-6.

TMP ends the regular season 6-14. They will play Sacred Heart Monday at 2 p.m. in their 2-1A regional opener in Salina.

Garden City has lost three-straight and five of their last six and ends the regular season 7-13.

Game 1: TMP-Marian 17, Garden City 2 (3 innings) After Garden City scored two runs in the top of the first innings, the Monarchs answered with four in the bottom of the first. They scored 12 in the second and one in the third to end the game by run-rule.

Ian Nehls led the Monarchs offense with four of their 14 hits and three RBIs. Kendall Walker had three hits. Joey Mindrup and Adler Brown both added two hits, Mindrup had TMP's only extra base hit with a double.

Carson Liles allowed both runs on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks over three innings and picked up the win.

Game 2: TMP-Marian 13, Garden City 6 The Monarchs scored nine in the bottom of the sixth to rally from a two-run deficit. Carson Liles tied the game with a one-out double. Adler Brown broke the tie with an RBI double. Freshman Caden Dinkel later blew the game open with a 3-run, inside-the-park home run.

Garden City grabbed the early lead with two runs in the third. The Monarchs answered with three in the bottom of the inning on a passed ball, a bases-loaded walk and sacrifice fly.

The Buffs scored three in the fourth to retake the lead at 5-3. TMP answered with a run in the fifth. Garden City added another run in the top of the sixth to push their lead to 6-2.

Carson Liles had two of TMP's seven hits and drove in two. Dinkel had three RBI's. Brown, Garrett Feauto and Drew Werth all drove in one run.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Women's Soccer announced the commitment of junior college transfer Claire Gaeth for the upcoming 2023 season. Gaeth played two years at Fresno City College, where she was a member of a pair of conference championship teams and helped her team to the CCCAA Final Four in 2022. Gaeth was an All-Central Valley Conference First Team selection in 2022 as a defender, helping Fresno City to a record of 17-3-4. She helped the Rams to three playoff wins as they reached the CCCAA Championship Semifinals. Fresno City finished the 2022 season ranked No. 7 in the United Soccer Coaches NJCAA national rankings. Academically she was named to the Fresno City College President's List. Gaeth is a native of Clovis, California, where she was an all-conference performer and served as team captain for Clovis East High School. She spent time with the Fresno Freeze of the Women's Premier Soccer League, starting eight contests and helping the team to a Pac North Conference semifinal appearance. ⚽ California junior college transfer commits to FHSU women

In September, the Wichita State University Board of Trustees
approved funding for phases 1A and 1B for the capital improvement plan to
remake Cessna Stadium into a state-of-the-art home for Wichita State athletics,
university and community events and the Kansas State High School Track and
Field Championship.

“We are planning to host the KSHSAA Track and Field
Championships in Wichita both during, and long after, this renovation project
is complete,” Wichita State director of athletics Kevin Saal said.

·&nbsp;Timing
of all demolition and renovations will be scheduled to avoid interruption of
the Kansas State High School Track and Field Championship in future years.

·&nbsp;Demolition
of the east stands of Cessna Stadium will begin immediately after the state
track meet this year. Phase 1A begins in the fall with work scheduled to begin
on improvements on the east side of the existing track (underground utility
work, seating area for approximately 3,600 with a combination of bleacher seats
and terraces designed for tents, free-standing field lights, fencing, ticket
pavilion, restroom/storage buildings, and plaza).&nbsp;Work is scheduled to be
completed before the 2024 Kansas State High School Track and Field
Championship.

·&nbsp;The
west side of the stadium, capacity around 12,000, will remain standing to allow
for continued operation of the Kansas State High School Track and Field
Championship. Demolition of the west side of the stadium can begin as early as
June 2025.

HAYS – Hoxie fired a 350 and won the Mid-Continent League boys golf
title by 12 shots over Hill City Thursday at the Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course.
Phillipsburg finished third with a 364.

Hill City’s Cooper Bagley shot a 4-over-par 75 and won the individual
title by one shot over teammate Dylan Budig and Austin Carroll of Ellis who
both fired a round of 76.

GREAT BEND - The Hays High boys won seven events and finished in first place at the Western Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships in Great Bend. The girls brought home four gold medals and finished in second place.

The Indians boys scored 128 points and finished 29 1/2 points ahead of second place Great Bend. The HHS girls scored 103 points which was 51 back of first place Great Bend

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/NFL-awards-MVP-offensive-defensive-player-of-the-year-5fd0f54c6dda88fbe9e3c9832474feb9">Aaron Rodgers will make his New York Jets debut</a>&nbsp;in the first Monday night game of the season against the Buffalo Bills and later faces the Miami Dolphins in the NFL's first Black Friday game on Nov.&nbsp;

Thanks to Rodgers' arrival in the Big Apple, the Jets will have six nationally televised games, including their first Sunday night game since 2011 when they take on the Chiefs on Oct. 1. That'll be the first ever Mahomes-Rodgers matchup.

“It’s not going to be monotonous with all the 1 o’clock games we’re used to,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said on NFL Network.

Coming off their second championship in four seasons, the Chiefs will host the Lions on Sept. 7 on “Thursday Night Football.” The Lions finished 9-8 last season after a 1-6 start and knocked Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers out of the playoffs with a 20-16 victory at Lambeau Field in the final regular-season game.

The NFL released the full schedule for its 104th season on Thursday night after revealing five international games and several others earlier in the day and Wednesday.

There will be three Monday night doubleheaders in Weeks 2, 3, and 14.

The Eagles have the toughest strength of schedule based on last year’s standings. Their opponents had a .566 winning percentage in 2022. The Falcons, who play in the lowly NFC South, have the easiest schedule with an opponents' winning percentage of .417.

The NFL’s 18-week, 272-game regular-season schedule concludes with 16 division games in Week 18, including two on Saturday Jan. 6.

🏈 NFL season kicks off with Super Bowl champion Chiefs hosting Lions

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Freddy Fermin had fouled off a couple of bunt attempts earlier in the week, yet Royals manager Matt Quatraro had no qualms about calling for another one with the backup catcher at the plate and a chance to beat the White Sox on Thursday.

Nick Pratto immediately dashed home from third base, but the bunt was so perfectly executed that there was never even a play, and that allowed Kansas City to escape with a 4-3 victory over Chicago and its first home series win of the season.

“He stuck his nose in there and got it done,” Quatraro said. “It's a really hard play, if at all possible, to defense a safety squeeze unless you really sell out, and then you give up a free base. But to get that bunt down was really impressive.”

There have been two walk-off bunts in the majors this season. Both have come against the White Sox.

“We got outplayed in this series,” Chicago manager Pedro Grifol said after dropping three of four. "Flat out.”

The Royals nursed a 3-1 lead into the eighth, but the White Sox tied it with a two-out rally against Aroldis Chapman. Andrew Vaughn and pinch-hitter Carlos Pérez singled, and Luis Robert Jr. bounced a tying double off the chalk of the left-field line.

But in the ninth, Pratto worked a walk off Reynaldo López (0-3) before Maikel Garcia struck out. Matt Duffy followed with a single to right, and Fermin laid down a bunt that went landed about six feet in front of the plate.

“Just shows you the versatility of this team,” said the Royals' Michael Massey, “and the spectrum we can play on.”

Scott Barlow (1-2) pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn the win.

The start of the game was delayed an hour by a steady rain that never fully abated, and that in turn created a conundrum for the grounds crew, which never seemed certain before first pitch whether it should be rolling up and stowing the tarp.

Turned out the pitchers handled the drizzle better than anyone.

The Royals' Brady Singer has been struggling most of the season, allowing 19 runs in 19 innings in his first four home starts. But the young right-hander showcased better command and execution while cutting through the White Sox lineup Thursday.

He gave up Vaughn's two-out single in the third but lasted six innings and departed with a 3-1 lead.

Mike Clevinger was sharp, too, though that was expected against Kansas City. The right-hander with the funky delivery — who twice got nailed with pitch-clock violations — was 9-0 with a 1.98 ERA over his first 14 games against the Royals.

Clevinger also left after six innings Thursday, allowing three hits and two walks.

While the Royals never hit Clevinger hard, they did hit him enough. Massey followed his first homer of the season Wednesday night with a two-out shot in the second, and the Royals got a leadoff single by Edward Oliveras and a walk from Pratto before a double by Garcia into the left-field corner gave Kansas City a 3-1 lead in the fourth.

The lead didn't hold. But the Royals added one more run when they needed it.

“There’s a lot of baseball left,” Grifol said. "Disappointed at times with lack of urgency? Absolutely, I am. Absolutely. That starts with me. So we've got to be better. We've got to be better as a staff. We've got to be better as a ballclub.”

The Royals welcomed hundreds of students for a wet but educational morning at Kauffman Stadium, and many stuck around through the rain delay for part of the game. The annual school day event was particularly special for Quatraro, the Royals' first-year manager, whose parents were both educators and whose wife is a teacher as well.

“There’s so many good lessons for life in school,” Quatraro said, “whether it’s in the books or the other stuff.”

Royals: OF Franmil Reyes chose free agency Thursday rather than go to Triple-A Omaha. He was designated for assignment after hitting just .186 with two homers and seven RBIs in 19 games for Kansas City.

White Sox: C Yasmani Grandal doubled in the second and singled in the third before leaving with right hamstring tightness. He was replaced by Seby Zavala. ... INF Jake Burger (strained left oblique) was beginning a rehab assignment Thursday night with Triple-A Charlotte. ... INF Yoán Moncada (lower back tightness) was not playing at Charlotte, raising the expectation that he would return to the White Sox on Friday. Chicago manager Pedro Grifol would only say it's a possibility.

The White Sox start a nine-game homestand with RHP Michael Kopech (1-3, 5.97 ERA) on the mound for Friday night's opener of a three-game set against Houston. The Royals head out on a nine-game trip but have not announced a starting pitcher for Friday night's opener of a three-game series in Milwaukee.

(AP) — Freddy Fermin had fouled off a couple of bunt attempts earlier in the week, yet Royals manager Matt Quatraro had no qualms about calling for another one with the backup catcher at the plate and a chance to beat the White Sox on Thursday.This time, Fermin's bunt was fair.Nick Pratto immediately dashed home from third base, but the bunt was so perfectly executed that there was never even a play, and that allowed Kansas City to escape with a 4-3 victory over Chicago and its first home series win of the season.“He stuck his nose in there and got it done,” Quatraro said. “It's a really hard play, if at all possible, to defense a safety squeeze unless you really sell out, and then you give up a free base. But to get that bunt down was really impressive.”There have been two walk-off bunts in the majors this season. Both have come against the White Sox.“We got outplayed in this series,” Chicago manager Pedro Grifol said after dropping three of four. "Flat out.”The Royals nursed a 3-1 lead into the eighth, but the White Sox tied it with a two-out rally against Aroldis Chapman. Andrew Vaughn and pinch-hitter Carlos Pérez singled, and Luis Robert Jr. bounced a tying double off the chalk of the left-field line.But in the ninth, Pratto worked a walk off Reynaldo López (0-3) before Maikel Garcia struck out. ⚾ Fermin's bunt in ninth gives Royals win over White Sox

Another commitment for the Fort Hays State women's basketball team. Avery Lowe from Maize South tweeted Thursday that she's going to be a Tiger.

Lowe averaged 15.6 points per game for the Lady Mavericks and was a second team Class 5A selection by the KBCA and will play in the KBCA All-Star game later this summer.

Lowe had originally committed to Nebraska-Kearney but later decommitted when coach Carrie Eighmey left to take the head coaching job at the University of Idaho.

🏀 FHSU women land another committment

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State women's soccer program announced the commitment of transfer Lynette Hawkins for the upcoming 2023 season. Hawkins is a transfer from University of Tennessee-Martin, where she spent two years and was a starter for the Skyhawks last year. She has been a member of the Puerto Rico national team. Hawkins saw one year on the pitch at UT-Martin after having to miss the 2021 season due to injury. In 2022, she started 15 matches at defender and notched one assist. She was the Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week once during the 2022 season and was a two-time all-academic performer in the OVC. Prior to her two years at UT-Martin, Hawkins spent two years at Western Illinois University. She earned Summit League All-Freshman Team honors in 2019 and was named Western Illinois' Newcomer of the Year. She started all 17 matches she played and logged a total of 1,495 minutes, playing the entirety of nine matches and over 100 minutes in a pair of double overtime matches. She was also an all-academic performer in the Summit League. She opted not to participate in the COVID-19 year of 2020-21. Hawkins is from Aurora, Colorado, where she was a first-team all-league performer at Cherokee Trail High School. She has been a member of both the Puerto Rico U19 national team and the senior national team.&nbsp;&nbsp;

⚽ Women’s Soccer Announces Commitment of Transfer Lynette Hawkins

HAYS - The Hays High baseball team wrapped up their regular season by hosting Washburn Rural on Wednesday. The Indians and Junior Blues were supposed to play April 4th but weather forced the delay.

The Indians split with the Junior Blues to end the regular season at 11-9.

Hays will find their postseason destination on Friday.

Game 1: Hays 8, Washburn Rural 1 Hays scored two runs in the first and six in the sixth for an 8-1 win over the Junior Blues in the first game.

A pair of first innings singles by Jack Weimer and Greg Hughes led to the game's first two runs. Weimer scored on a passed ball that ricocheted into the Washburn Rural dugout awarding the Indians two bases and their first run. The second run came on a balk call against the Junior Blues pitcher.

Carter Graham worked five scoreless innings before giving up a run in the top of the sixth cutting the Hays lead down to 2-1.

Graham helped out his own cause in the bottom of the inning igniting a six run frame with an RBI single to push the lead to 3-1.

Graham took the win working a career high six innings and was lifted after hitting the pitch limit. Graham also recorded two hits. Nolan Dreher worked the top of the seventh.

Game 2: Washburn Rural 6, Hays 1 Washburn Rural did all of their damage in two innings. The Junior Blues scored three runs in each the third and seventh inning.&nbsp;

All three of their third innings runs occurred with two outs. The Junior Blues scored three more in the top of the seventh on three hits.

The Indians lone run came on an errant pick off throw that plated Will Cadoret.

Carson Spray took the loss working four innings and allowing three runs. Cooper Johnson went three innings in relief and allowed three runs. Spray recorded two hits.

⚾ Hays splits with Washburn Rural to end regular season

The term student-athlete is used to describe any high school or collegiate athlete. Many times the athletic part of that statement directs a high school athlete to their college destination.

The script for Hays High senior Avery Winter was a little different. Winter decided to attend Washburn University because they were the only school in Kansas to offer the Forensic Investigation major she was looking for.

The Ichabods have a relatively new track program and as Winter started to invesitgate she noticed that the female athletes that entered the program had improved their times by quite a bit. Something that she had noticed about her own times at the end of cross country.

Winter runs the 800 meters and 4x800 relay. Running has become a passion and borderline obsession for her and know that can continue with her passion for school as well at Washburn.

HAYS, Kan. - The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) announced last week to its membership that the 2024 Class 3-2-1A Boys State Wrestling Tournament will be held in Salina. Fort Hays State University has home conference basketball games scheduled that weekend in February that involve four MIAA institutions, conflicting with dates of the state wrestling tournament. "We realize the significance to our community of facilitating multiple events throughout the year," FHSU Director of Athletics Curtis Hammeke said. "Our staff works diligently attempting to balance these events with our own schedules. When we realized that solutions for solving the basketball conflict were not realistic logistically, we began to explore alternatives to keep a tournament in Hays." "The Kansas State High School Activities Association appreciates the longstanding efforts of the Fort Hays State University Athletic Department and the Hays community in providing championship caliber efforts while hosting state championship events for our member school students and communities," KSHSAA Executive Director Bill Faflick said. "We truly appreciate the FHSU administrators in trying to creatively solve the scheduling conflict. This move for next year is no indication that KSHSAA is moving the state wrestling event permanently. We analyze our sites for all our state championships annually to make the best decisions for our schools and hosts." FHSU proposed to host the Girls 4A-1A state tournament the week before on Thursday, February 15 and Friday, February 16, along with a Boys regional on Saturday, February 17. Eventually, KSHSAA opted to have both tournaments in Salina over a three day period during the traditional championship week. "We felt like we had a good proposal, but an alternative concept was selected," Hammeke said. "We remain hopeful to have either a boys or girls state wrestling championship in Hays in the future. (AP) — Nick Pratto homered and Brad Keller won for the first time in nearly a month as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 9-1 on Wednesday night.Keller (3-3), who leads the majors with 32 walks allowed, got into immediate trouble walking the first two batters he faced, but escaped first-inning damage with a double play and strikeout.“We had a chance to put some runs on the board in the first inning and we didn’t,” White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said. “We had them on the ropes there and he was able to get out of it.”Gavin Sheets walked to lead off the second and scored on Hanser Alberto’s single for Chicago’s lone run.“The walks in the beginning, he easily could have fought himself hard,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “(He showed) some resolve. He really executed some pitches, especially with the off-speed stuff. The third inning he came out and threw some good fastballs in the zone. That kind of reset the match-up. It wasn’t just one pitch they had to worry about.”Keller finished five innings, allowing one run on three hits and four walks, striking out four to earn his first win since April 12.“I think that (third) was by far my best inning,” Keller said. “The offense putting up numbers like they did allowed me to just go out there and throw strikes.
