ALVA, Okla. – Fort Hays State improved to 22-20 overall on the season with a doubleheader sweep at Northwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday. The Tigers won game one by run rule, 8-0 in six innings, before taking the second contest by a score of 9-5. Northwestern Oklahoma State moved to 17-27 overall on the season with the results.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 8, Northwestern Oklahoma State 0 Fort Hays State took an early lead in the first contest and never looked back as Savannah Egger&nbsp;recorded her fourth complete game shutout of the season. Egger scattered just four hits over 6.0 innings with one walk, while striking out six in a game that was shortened by an inning due to the run rule. Egger is now 12-9 on the season.

The Tigers went up 1-0 in the first inning when Sarah Tiffany&nbsp;had a two-out double and Loren Beggs&nbsp;followed with an RBI single to drive in Tiffany. The lead extended to 3-0 in the second inning with another two-out rally. Regan Curry and Madison Pierce&nbsp;singles and a fielding error by the Rangers loaded the bases and Peyton Shepard&nbsp;drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle.

FHSU benefitted from another Ranger error to start their half of the fourth. Carly Stuke&nbsp;drew a two-out walk and then Shepard recorded her third RBI of the game with another single up the middle.

Audrey Gillespie&nbsp;delivered the big blow for the Tigers in the fifth with her second home run of the season, a three-run shot to left-center field. Beggs and Alondra Dominguez&nbsp;set up the opportunity with singles. Back-to-back singles by Shepard and Tiffany to open the sixth eventually set up an RBI groundout by Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson&nbsp;to push the lead to the run-rule threshold.

Shepard and Beggs each finished with three hits in the game. FHSU had 14 hits in the game overall

Game 2: Fort Hays State 9, Northwestern Oklahoma State 5 The lead changed hands three times in the second contest of the day as FHSU landed on the good end of a game that saw 14 runs scored. NWOSU took an initial lead in the first 1-0 before FHSU took the lead 2-1 in the third. NWOSU took the lead back at 3-2 with single runs in the third and fourth, but FHSU ultimately took the lead back with a pair of runs in the fifth and held on to the lead the rest of the way.

Morgan Schmidt&nbsp;threw the first 5.2 innings of the game for FHSU, recording eight strikeouts, though the Rangers were able to pick up 11 hits against her. All five of the runs she allowed in the game were earned. Emma Montoya&nbsp;took over with two outs in the sixth to slam the door on a threatening opportunity for the Rangers and went on to record her first save of the season with two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings of work. She entered the game with two runners in scoring position and two outs in a 7-5 game.

The Rangers opened their half of the first with a double and triple to instantly take a 1-0 lead before the Tigers recorded an out. However, Schmidt worked her way out of the jam with three-straight strikeouts.

Madison Pierce&nbsp;drew a walk to open the third and eventually came in to score on a two-out RBI single by Carly Stuke. Peyton Shepard&nbsp;extended the inning with another single and then Sarah Tiffany&nbsp;pushed the Tigers into a 2-1 lead with another RBI single. NWOSU evened the score at 2-2 with a two-out RBI single in the third and then grabbed the lead back 3-2 with a two-out RBI single in the fourth.

Shepard opened the fifth with a bang when her flare to right-center field fell under a diving right fielder and rolled all the way to the wall as Shepard was off to the races for her second inside-the-park home run of the season. Two batters later, Loren Beggs&nbsp;put the Tigers in the lead 4-3 with her team-leading third homer of the season that flew over the wall in left field.

The Tigers loaded up the bases in the sixth on a Lilliana Ramirez-Johnson&nbsp;single, a Stuke double, and then a Shepard walk. Beggs upped the FHSU lead to 6-3 with a two-RBI single, then Alondra Dominguez followed with an RBI double to make it 7-3.

The Rangers put together yet another two-out rally in the sixth with a pair of RBI singles to make it 7-5, but Montoya took over for the Tigers and got a groundout to keep NWOSU from potentially tying the game or taking the lead. FHSU got both runs back in the top of the seventh when Pierce and Ramirez-Johnson singled to set up a two-RBI double by Stuke. Montoya got the first two outs of the seventh with strikeouts before getting a groundout to end the game.

Stuke, Shepard, and Ramirez-Johnson all had three hits in the game as FHSU recorded 16 as a team and finished the day with 30 hits between the two games. Beggs and Shepard each had four RBIs on the day between the two games to lead the Tigers.

Fort Hays State now prepares to take on MIAA-leading Central Oklahoma on Friday in Hays at Fleharty Family Field. The doubleheader between the teams starts at 1 p.m.

NEW YORK (AP) — Whitey Herzog, the gruff and ingenious Hall of Fame manager who guided the St. Louis Cardinals to three pennants and a World Series title in the 1980s and perfected an intricate, nail-biting strategy known as "Whiteyball," has died. He was 92.

Cardinals spokesman Brian Bartow said Tuesday the team had been informed of his death by Herzog's family. The team was not yet sure whether it happened Monday night or Tuesday. Herzog had been at Busch Stadium on April 4 for the Cardinals' home opener.

A crew-cut, pot-bellied tobacco chewer who had no patience for the "buddy-buddy" school of management, Herzog joined the Cardinals in 1980 and helped end the team's decade-plus pennant drought by adapting it to the artificial surface and distant fences of Busch Memorial Stadium. A typical Cardinals victory under Herzog was a low-scoring, 1-run game, sealed in the final innings by a “bullpen by committee,” relievers who might be replaced after a single pitch, or temporarily shifted to the outfield, then brought back to the mound.

The Cardinals had power hitters in George Hendrick and Jack Clark, but they mostly relied on the speed and resourcefulness of switch-hitters Vince Coleman and Willie McGee, the acrobat fielding of shortstop and future Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith and the effective pitching of starters such as John Tudor and Danny Cox and relievers Todd Worrell, Ken Dayley and Jeff Lahti. For the '82 champions, Herzog didn't bother rotating relievers, but simply brought in future Hall of Famer Bruce Sutter to finish the job.

"They (the media) seemed to think there was something wrong with the way we played baseball, with speed and defense and line-drive hitters," Herzog wrote in his memoir "White Rat: A Life in Baseball," published in 1987. "They called it 'Whiteyball' and said it couldn't last."

Under Herzog, the Cards won pennants in 1982, 1985 and 1987, and the World Series in 1982, when they edged the Milwaukee Brewers in seven games. Herzog managed the Kansas City Royals to division titles in 1976-78, but they lost each time in the league championship to the New York Yankees.

Overall, Herzog was a manager for 18 seasons, compiling a record of 1,281 wins and 1,125 losses. He was named Manager of the Year in 1985 and voted into the Hall by the Veterans Committee in 2010, his plaque noting his "stern, yet good-natured style," and his emphasis on speed, pitching and defense. Just before he formally entered the Hall, the Cardinals retired his uniform number, 24.

When asked about the secrets of managing, he would reply a sense of humor and a good bullpen.

Dorrel Norman Elvert Herzog was born in New Athens, Illinois, a blue-collar community that would shape him long after he left. He excelled in baseball and basketball and was open to skipping the occasional class to take in a Cardinals game. Signed up by the Yankees, he was a center fielder who discovered that he had competition from a prospect born just weeks before him, Mickey Mantle.

Herzog never played for the Yankees, but he did get to know manager Casey Stengel, another master shuffler of players who became a key influence. The light-haired Herzog was named "The White Rat" because of his resemblance to Yankees pitcher Bob "The White Rat" Kuzava.

Like so many successful managers, Herzog was a mediocre player, batting just .257 over eight seasons and playing several positions. His best year was with Baltimore in 1961, when he hit .291. He also played for the Washington Senators, Kansas City Athletics and Detroit Tigers, with whom he ended his playing career, in 1963.

"Baseball has been good to me since I quit trying to play it," he liked to say.

After working as a scout and coach, Herzog was hired in 1967 by the New York Mets as director of player development, with Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan among the future stars he helped bring along. The Mets liked him well enough to designate him the successor to Gil Hodges, but when the manager died suddenly in 1972 the job went to Yogi Berra. Herzog instead debuted with the Texas Rangers the following season, finishing just 47-91 before being replaced by Billy Martin. He managed the Angels for a few games in 1974 and joined the Royals the following season, his time with Kansas City peaking in 1977 when the team finished 102-60.

Many players spoke warmly of Herzog, but he didn’t hesitate to rid his teams of those he no longer wanted, dumping such Cardinals stars as outfielder Lonnie Smith and starting pitcher Joaquin Andujar. One trade worked out brilliantly: Before the 1982 season, he exchanged .300 hitting shortstop Garry Templeton, whom Herzog had chastised for not hustling, for the Padres' light-hitting Ozzie Smith, now widely regarded as the best defensive shortstop in history. Another deal was less far successful: Gold Glove first baseman Keith Hernandez, with whom Herzog had feuded, to the Mets in the middle of 1983 for pitchers Neil Allen and Rick Ownbey. Hernandez led New York to the World Series title in 1986, while Allen and Ownbey were soon forgotten.

Herzog was just as tough on himself, resigning in the middle of 1990 because he was “embarrassed” by the team’s 33-47 record. He served as a consultant and general manager for the Angels in the early '90s and briefly considered managing the Red Sox before the 1997 season.

If the '82 championship was the highlight of his career, his greatest blow was the '85 series. The Cardinals were up 3 games to 2 against his former team, the Royals, and in Game 6 led 1-0 going into the bottom of the ninth, with Worrell brought in to finish the job.

Jorge Orta led off and grounded a 0-2 pitch between the mound and first base. In one of the most famous blown calls in baseball history, he was ruled safe by umpire Don Denkinger, even though replays showed first baseman Jack Clark's toss to Worrell was in time. The Cardinals never recovered. Kansas City rallied for two runs to tie the series and crushed the Cards 11-0 in Game 7.

"No, I'm not bitter at Denkinger," Herzog told the AP years later. "He's a good guy, he knows he made a mistake, and he's a human being. It happened at an inopportune time but I do think they ought to have instant replay in the playoffs and World Series."

As if testing Herzog's humor, the Hall inducted him alongside an umpire, Doug Harvey.

"I don't know why he should get in," Herzog joked at the time. "Doug kicked me out of more games than any other umpire."

The Fort Hays State baseball team is back at home to begin their last non-conference series of the season, going against the Cardinals of William Jewell on Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Larks Park, with the second and final game of the series coming&nbsp;next Tuesday (April 23) in Liberty, Mo. at 4 p.m.

The Tigers were swept in a three-game series this past weekend against Washburn. The bats were swinging&nbsp;in the series, scoring a combined 19 runs in three games. Tiger pitching currently ranks fifth in the MIAA with an ERA of 5.90 on the season. The Tiger pitchers have been effective in keeping the ball in the park, giving up the fewest home runs in the MIAA at 35.

Brady Kreutzer&nbsp;leads the Tigers with a slugging percentage of .707, ranking ninth in the MIAA and tied for 20th nationally with 111 total bases. His seven triples are the most in the MIAA and tied for second in the nation.&nbsp;The power-hitting duo of Kreutzer and Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;makes the team one of three schools in the MIAA to have multiple players with ten or more home runs this season. Herrmann has driven in a team-high 41 RBI while also crushing 12 home runs, tied for the fourth most in the conference. Isaiah Ural&nbsp;had himself a weekend, going 6-for-13 with four extra base hits and three RBI. Herrmann also&nbsp;had a&nbsp;commendable weekend in Topeka, having back-to-back games with three hits while only striking out once the whole series.&nbsp;

Ty Riley&nbsp;sits second among the MIAA in ERA, allowing 3.10 runs per nine innings. Espinoza ranks sixth among qualified pitchers in the MIAA with an ERA of 4.20, going eight innings along with a trio of strikeouts in his last outing.&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/dylan-rinker/7794">Dylan Rinker</a>&nbsp;has an ERA of 4.66, coming in at ninth overall. Riley is seventh in the conference with 53 strikeouts on the year, with three other Tigers also striking out more than 40 batters (Tanner Vaughn&nbsp;51K, Cade Flaherty 42K, Rinker 40K).

The Tigers are 0-2 all-time against William Jewell after the Cardinals took both games played in 2018. Evan Jilbert leads the Cardinals in batting average, hitting .403 with a team-high 58 RBI. Alex Epp leads the team in total hits, notching 50 hits while scoring 52 runs. Breven Yarbro has made seven starts for the Cardinals, posting a 6.08 ERA over 40 innings of work. Yarbro has thrown two complete games this season and has a record of 6-1. William Jewell sits in sixth in the GLVC, while the Tigers sit in eighth place, tied with three other MIAA teams.

If you want to find Hays High senior Edwin Muller in the morning you will have to head for the gym. Most mornings at seven o'clock he will be getting shots up. During the basketball season or in the offseason, Muller's mornings are spent in the gym. So to are many of his evenings.

All of that work, along with his high school season, have culminated with an opportunity to play basketball at Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska.

The trajectory for Muller to make it to this point took a steep incline over the past few years. He barely made the team as a freshman.

The adage of "hard work pays off" came true for the 6'1" guard.

Muller appeared in 47 varsity games in his career. He started all 21 games in 2023-2024.

Scoring in double figures five times this year he averaged 6.5 points per game and shot 33% from beyond the arc. He went 14-32 on three pointers over the last six games, good for 43.8%.

It was the defensive side of the ball though that Edwin made his biggest improvement and impact over the past two seasons according to head coach Sean Dreiling.

The Indians went 13-8 this past season and won the Western Athletic Conference crown at 7-1. Muller joins a Hastings College squad that was 23-9 and 15-5 in conference games.

Muller is a three sport athlete competing in soccer in the fall and track this spring where he runs the hurdles.

Kansas City improved to 5-0 against Chicago already this season. The surprising Royals have allowed a major league-low 48 runs during their 11-6 start, and the White Sox have scored 34 runs so far — also the lowest total in the big leagues.

Andrew Benintendi had two of Chicago's four hits in its fifth consecutive loss. The White Sox were shut out for the sixth time during their 2-14 start.

Braden Shewmake was the only Chicago runner to advance past first base. He singled and swiped second in the fifth, but was stranded there when Robbie Grossman flied out to the warning track in right.

Chris Stratton got three outs for Kansas City before James McArthur earned his third save.

Gavin Sheets was hit by a pitch with two down in the ninth, but McArthur struck out pinch-hitter Eloy Jiménez for the final out.

White Sox right-hander Nick Nastrini (0-1) permitted two runs and three hits over five innings in his major league debut. He struck out five and walked two.

HAYS – The Hays High boys golf team shot a 377 and finished
in ninth place at their own Bob Blazer/Hays High Invitational Monday at the
Smoky Hill Country Club. Manhattan won the team title with a 314, Washburn
Rural finished second with a 317 and Sacred Heart third with a 321.

NEW YORK (AP) — Harrison Bader broke a scoreless tie with an infield single in the eighth inning and Edwin Díaz earned his first save at Citi Field since October 2022 as the New York Mets edged the Kansas City Royals 2-1 on Sunday.

“That was obviously not the most conventional way of scoring an RBI, but it did get the job done,” Bader said.

Mets rookie Jose Buttó and Royals starter Cole Ragans matched zeros for six innings in a crisp pitchers’ duel. New York stranded nine runners over the first seven innings — seven between the fifth and seventh — before Chris Stratton (1-1) walked the bases loaded in the eighth.

With two outs, Bader hit a slow roller toward third and Maikel Garcia was unable to make a barehand pickup.

“I thought it was going to hit the wall,” Bader said with a grin. “That was just a fortunate play and a play that went in our favor, which we like. I think we create our own luck in this field and in this game. That one worked out for us and I’m very happy it did.”

Stratton then walked Brandon Nimmo on four pitches, giving the Mets a 2-0 lead. The four walks by Stratton were his most since Aug. 26, 2019, when he walked four in two innings for Pittsburgh against Philadelphia.

“That’s an uncharacteristic outing and it certainly didn’t look like he was missing by much,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said.

Díaz gave up a two-out homer to Vinnie Pasquantino in the ninth before getting Freddy Fermin on a popup for his third save this season. The first two came in Cincinnati.

It was Díaz’s first save at home — where his high-energy entrances to “&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S73zDvMgGmI">Narco</a>&nbsp;” by Blasterjaxx &amp; Timmy Trumpet&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mlb-sports-baseball-new-york-mets-82a4c1de9a91a8bf5e159455f699c024">became hugely popular</a>&nbsp;two years ago — since Oct. 4, 2022. After signing a $102 million, five-year contract, the star closer missed last season following a March 2023 knee injury sustained while celebrating on the field after Puerto Rico beat the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic.

Brooks Raley (1-0) struck out two in a perfect eighth for the win. New York has won seven of 10 since an 0-5 start, taking three straight series.

TOPEKA, Kan. - Fort Hays State baseball fell to Washburn in the last game of the three-game series, 7-6, on Sunday. The Tigers (21-20, 9-18 MIAA) led 3-0 after an inning of play before the Ichabods (23-16, 17-10 MIAA) rallied late for the third-straight game, scoring four runs over the last three innings to grab the win in walk-off fashion.

The Tigers raced out to a quick start, scoring three runs in the first inning. Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;led off with a double to left center before an Isaiah Ural&nbsp;single scored Saavedra. Kreutzer singled to put two on for Zane Knox. He came through with a two-RBI single after a wild pitch put both runners in scoring position, giving FHSU a 3-0 lead.

Tiger starter Rafeal Espinoza&nbsp;worked around a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning before the Ichabod bats added a run in the bottom of the third. Espinoza walked the leadoff&nbsp;batter, leading to a sacrifice bunt, putting a runner in scoring position. The Ichabods then had an RBI single, putting them on the board. Washburn came right back in the bottom half of the fourth to score two more on two hits. The game remained tied 3-3 until the bottom of the seventh, when Washburn took the lead on a sacrifice fly RBI.

Fort Hays State tied the game in the top of the eighth when Kreutzer led off the inning with a walk. The next batter, Knox, put down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner, bringing up Jose Cintron. Cintron singled to left field to score Kreutzer from second, making it 4-4. However, Washburn rallied back into the lead with a two-out, two-RBI triple in the bottom of the eighth.

The Tigers did not go down without a fight. Saavedra drew a walk with one out and then Ural came through in the clutch and launched a homer to deep center field to tie the ball game 6-6 in the ninth. That marked his third RBI of the game and his seventh hit of the series. Unfortunately, the Ichabods had the final blow in the bottom of the ninth on a walk-off solo homer by Cale Savage.

Ural and Kreutzer both had a pair of FHSU's seven total hits. One of Kreutzer's hits was his seventh triple of the season which ties the FHSU record for a single season. Saavedra, Ural and Kreutzer all scored twice in the loss. Espinoza struck out three batters in 8 innings of work, allowing six earned runs on ten hits and a pair of walks.&nbsp;

Landyn Sterling suffered the loss, going 1/3 inning of relief in the ninth.

The Tigers head back to Hays for a non-conference contest with William Jewell on Tuesday at 3 p.m. which can be heard on KAYS (1400/94.3). FHSU will face Emporia State in its final home MIAA series of the season on the weekend starting Friday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

AZUSA, Calif. - Fort Hays State University's track and field athletes exhibited exemplary performances on the final day of the Bryan Clay Invitational on Saturday. The Tigers finished Saturday with a pair of champions and provisional marks. The teams finished out the weekend with more than ten provisional marks (7 men, 4 women).

The distance team was led by Jaycee Vath&nbsp;who dominated the women's 1,500m C by claiming first with an impressive time of 4:36.52. Vath's victory comes as her second top ten finish in DI competition this weekend. Freshman Madison Sutterfield&nbsp;delivered commendable performances in both the 1,500m C and the 5,000m C, securing a top ten finish in the 1,500m while notching personal bests in both events. The men's distance team saw Grant Bradley&nbsp;finish eighth in the men's 1,500m B, accomplishing a personal best to add to the excellent weekend by Bradley. Bradley finished the weekend with two personal bests and holds the third best 1,500m time in FHSU's DII&nbsp;history. 

Toby Wahlmeier&nbsp;represented the men's sprint team with notable performances. Wahlmeier showcased his swiftness in the 200m, securing the ninth spot with a time of 21.18 seconds, earning a coveted DII provisional mark. On the women's side, senior Taylor Savolt&nbsp;showcased the women's 400m hurdles, earning 18th with a time of 1:01.58, good enough for a DII provisional mark. Reba Mader&nbsp;joined the 400m competition,&nbsp;crossing the finish line in 61st place with a time of 56.88 seconds.

In the field events, Annabeth Baalmann&nbsp;tied for first in the women's pole vault C, clearing a height of 12-2.50. Her mark comes just short of the provisional, notching her first victory of the outdoor season. Brady Deges&nbsp;exhibited proficiency in the men's pole vault C, securing the second position with a height of 15-1.0.

The Tigers are now set for the competition in Kearney, Neb. at the Loper Invitational next Friday. The team will then head back to Hays, Kan. for the local Alex Francis Classic set for Thursday (April 25).

⚾ Another late rally leads Washburn past Tigers

DODGE CITY - Hays dropped their second day games in Dodge City on Saturday. The Indians lost the opener 3-2 to Goddard Eisenhower then 13-1 to Maize South. The Indians dropped to 5-5 on the season.

Game 1: Goddard Eisenhower 3, Hays 2 Hays scored two in the top of the first inning but allowed three in the bottom of the sixth to lose 3-2 in the first game of the day.

Lakyn Zimmerman drove in Dezarae Schmidt and Avery Soliday doubled in Riley Dreher for a 2-0 lead in the first inning.&nbsp;

Three consecutive errors helped set up Eisenhower for the win in the bottom of the sixth.

Aubrey Thomas took the loss allowing three runs, none earned, on three hits while striking out nine and walking three.

Game 2: Maize South 13, Hays 1 Hays had a one run lead through two innings but allowed multiple runs in the next three innings for a 13-1 loss.

Avery Solida hit her first home run of the season to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Maize South scored two in the third, three in the fourth and eight in the fifth for a 13-1 victory.

Riley Dreher started the game and took the loss lasting 2 2/3 innings.

Hays PostDODGE CITY - Hays dropped their second day games in Dodge City on Saturday. The Indians lost the opener 3-2 to Goddard Eisenhower then 13-1 to Maize South. Fort Hays State senior guard Sydney Golladay will finish her collegiate career at Division I Creighton. Golladay announced through social media Saturday that she will use her senior transfer year to play for the Bluejays in Omaha, Neb.

The Fremont, Neb. native played in 113 career games at FHSU while making 106 starts.&nbsp; Golladay averaged a career-best 6.7 points per game this past season while dishing out 3.6 assists per game. She finished with 359 career assists which is sixth most in FHSU program history.

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State picked up its second sweep in MIAA play this season by defeating Central Missouri twice on Saturday at Fleharty Family Field. The Tigers won by scores of 3-2 and 2-1 to move to 20-20 overall, 6-12 in the MIAA. Central Missouri dropped to 21-22 overall, 10-12 in the MIAA.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 3, Central Missouri 2 The Jennies took the early lead in the first contest with a two-out, two-RBI single by Abby Allnutt in the top of the first. But that was all the scoring the Jennies would do against Savannah Egger, who buckled down and held UCM scoreless the remainder of the game.

After great scoring opportunities in the first three innings, the Tigers finally broke through with a pair of runs in the fourth. A throwing error to open the inning helped start a Tiger rally. Sarah Tiffany and Alondra Dominguez&nbsp;each followed with singles as Dominguez notched an RBI on her hit. With one out, Regan Curry&nbsp;delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.

A dropped pop up by UCM in the fifth helped the Tigers to their go-ahead run. A Tiffany&nbsp;single put two on for the Tigers. UCM tried to turn a ground-ball double play on the next play, but the shortstop threw wide of the first base bag, allowing Loren Beggs&nbsp;to wheel around to score. UCM committed a total of five errors in the game as FHSU took advantage of the miscues.

Egger made the Tiger lead hold up as she worked around a base runner in both the sixth and seventh innings for her second complete-game win of the weekend. She moved to 11-9 on the season with the win, allowing four hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

Paige Petefish pitched the first four innings for UCM and had three strikeouts. Both of her runs allowed were unearned. Andi Siebeneck (2-3) took the loss in relief for the Jennies with one strikeout and her run allowed was also unearned.

Peyton Shepard&nbsp;singled and moved up to second on a wild pitch. Sarah Tiffany&nbsp;drove her in from second with a base hit to center field. Tiffany moved up on the throw to home plate and then traded spots with Loren Beggs, who drove in Tiffany with an RBI single and moved up on the throw to the plate.

A double and an RBI single by Jadyn Sheffield in the second inning accounted for half of UCM's hits in the game. Schmidt eventually retired the final seven batters of the game to pick up her fifth win of the season. She allowed just four hits and walked two, while fanning seven batters for the second-straight day.

Fort Hays State did all of its hit damage in the first inning of the game as a fielding error and a fielder's choice in the fifth yielded FHSU's only baserunners after the first inning. Brooke Weimer took the tough-luck loss for UCM, moving to 8-10 on the season.

🥎 FHSU picks up pair of one-run wins over Central Missouri

NEW YORK (AP) — Salvador Perez had four RBIs on two hits and Bobby Witt Jr. scored four times to lead the Kansas City Royals to an 11-7 win over the New York Mets on Saturday.

The four-run game was the second of the week for Witt, who scored four times in Thursday’s 13-3 win over the Houston Astros. He just missed scoring a fifth run in the sixth inning Saturday, when Brandon Nimmo robbed him of a three-run homer with a leaping catch at the right-centerfield wall.

Perez, who won the 2015 World Series MVP when Kansas City beat the Mets in five games, also homered and Nick Loftin collected a career-high three RBIs as the Royals improved to 10-5 — just the seventh time in franchise history the Royals have won at least 10 of their first 15 games.

Hunter Renfroe had a two-run double while Nelson Velázquez and Freddy Fermin had an RBI hit apiece.

Alec Marsh (2-0) gave up four runs in five innings.

Pete Alonso hit solo homers to left in the third and sixth and finished with three RBIs for the Mets, who were trying to get to .500 for the first time this season. The multi-homer game was the 20th for Alonso, leaving him just two shy of Darryl Strawberry’s franchise record.

Sean Manaea (1-1) allowed eight runs (six earned) in 3 2/3 innings. He surrendered just one run over 11 innings in his first two starts.
