The Hays Middle School Falcons wrapped up their track season with the MSWAC meet in Garden City on Tuesday. The 8th grade girls finished a record breaking season by setting yet another record, this time on the team side. Brooke Bieker nearly set another record but scratched on a triple jump by a quarter inch on a jump that would have set the school record by 5 inches.

According to HMS Track the team went undefeated in back to back seasons.

The final performance scored 210 points at the league meet. That total is the most by any team in league history. Second place finished with 95 points. They scored 28 different individuals and relays. The Falcons won 13 events.

👟 HMS 8th grade girls record(s) breaking season

ANDOVER – The Hays High softball team saw their nine-game
win-streak snapped Tuesday. The Indians lost 3-1 to Andover Central then had
their seventh inning rally fall short in an 11-9 setback to Salina South.

Hays is now 13-5. They close the regular season at home
Friday with a split doubleheader with Newton and Manhattan at the Bickle-Schmidt
Sports Complex.

Game 1: Andover Central 3, Hays 1 
The Jaguars scored two in the bottom of the third to take the lead then added
an insurance run in the fourth.

The Indians scored their line run in the top of the first.
Aubree Thomas led off the game with a double then scored on Riley Dreher’s one-out
double.

Aubree Thomas doubled in the third for the Indians only other
hit in the game.

Thomas went the distance in the circle, allowing two earned
runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Game 2: Salina South 11, Hays 9 
The Cougars
built a 7-0 lead and were up 10-2 before the Indians mounted a comeback with
two in the sixth and four in the bottom of the seventh.

Aubree Thomas started the comeback with a two-run double in the
sixth. She added a grand slam with two outs in the seventh. Dezerae Schmidt
followed with a single but a groundout ended the game.

Thomas finished 4-for-5 with two home runs and seven RBIs.
Schmidt added three hits. Ashlun Zimmer drove in two runs.

Riley Dreher allowed six runs (two earned) on three hits with
two strikeouts and two walks over two innings and took the loss. Thomas pitched
the final five innings and allowed five runs on six hits with four strikeouts
and a walk.

HAYS – The TMP-Marian softball team dropped the final two
games of the regular season Tuesday, losing 9-6 and 14-4 to Great Bend at the Monarch
Softball Complex. Brooke Koeningsman homered in both games and Hannah Garcia had
four hits on the day.

The Monarchs are 13-7 on the season and will be the
three-seed in next week’s Ellis 2-1A regional in Ellis. The official brackets
will be released from KSHSAA on Wednesday.

Game 1: Great Bend 9, TMP-Marian 6 
The Monarchs scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-3 lead but
the Panthers answered with six on the top of the seventh.

TMP used two walks and a single to load the bases in the
sixth. Sophie Allen gave the Monarchs the lead with a two-run double center.
Maddie Augustine scored on a passed ball then Halle Dreiling drove in Allen
with double to left.

The Panthers homered to start the seventh then had five
straight singles with one out to retake the lead.

Brooke Koeningsman homered and drove in two runs. Sophie
Allen had two hits and also drove in two runs.

Maddie Augustine went the distance in the circle and took the
loss. She allowed nine runs (six earned) on 12 hits with one strikeout and four
walks and a strikeout.

The Panthers
scored three in the second and third to build a 6-0 lead. After TMP plated two
in the third, Great Bend answered with two in top of the fourth. They put the
game away with four in the sixth and two in the seventh.

The Monarchs committed six errors in the game which resulted
in nine unearned runs.

Hannah Garcia was a home run away from hitting for the cycle
and had three of TMP’s nine hits. Jaci VonLintel added two hits. Brooke
Koeningsman had a two-run home run.

Maddie Augustine allowed all 14 runs (five earned) on 11 hits
with four strikeouts and a walk.

🥎 Monarchs drop two to Panthers in regular season finale

PHILLIPSBURG – The TMP-Marian boys golf team finished in first place at Tuesday’s Phillipsburg Mel Schremmer Invitational at the
Phillipsburg Golf Club. The Monarchs shot a 353 and finished 13 shots ahead of second place Phillipsburg. Ellis finished third with a 374.

Ellis’ Austin Carroll won the individual title with a 7-over-par
75. Norton’s Eli Jones finished second with a 76 and TMP-Marian’s Pake Dewey
third with a 78. The Monarchs Heuer Brungardt shot an 85 and placed sixth.

Hays Post HAYS - The Hays High girls' soccer team scored early and often and cruised to a 13-0 win over a depleted TMP-Marian squad Tuesday at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex.

The Indians (12-3) have won three straight and nine of their last 10. They close out the regular season at Garden City Friday.

Dani Willeford scored the Indians (12-3) first goal two minutes into the match which was called at halftime by mercy rule.

Karlee Crispin recorded the hat trick with three goals. Claire Humphrey and Arely Maldonado both scored twice. Annie Humphrey, Katie Gutierrez, Liz Cunningham, Kinslee Newell and Sienna Lummus all scored one goal.

Ava Briggs and Arely Maldonado both had two assists. Willeford, Gutierrez, Annie Humphrey, Kinslee Newell and Carly Lang all had one assist.

Cassidy Smith and Madison Meyers played in goal but there were no shots by TMP (0-15).&nbsp;

HAYS - Hays High School held their annual athletic and academic recognition night on Monday at HHS. Carly Lang was named the Jack Roberts Female Outstanding Athlete. Keamonie Archie and Kyreese Groen were both honored as Swim, Carpenter, Smith Outstanding Male Athletes.

The Jack Roberts Female Outstanding Athlete Award, given to this
year’s most outstanding female athlete, is named in honor of Jack Roberts who
was a principal at Hays High. Mr. Roberts was a very strong advocate of
athletics for young women and did very much to advance and promote this cause.

Swim, Carpenter, Smith Memorial Award: Keamonie Archie, Kyreese Groen

The Swim, Carpenter, Smith Memorial Award, given to this year’s
most outstanding male athlete. The Swim, Carpenter, Smith Memorial Trophy
for outstanding male athlete is named after three Hays High Students that were
killed in a car accident during their sophomore year.

Debbie Brungardt Fan of the Year Award Student: Elizabeth Rogowski Adult Community:&nbsp;Rick and Diane Wolfe USD #489:&nbsp;Vryl Brown

The Debbie Brungardt Fan of the Year Award is named in honor of a
former HHS student who lived her life with a physical disability but attended
nearly every event that involved the Hays High Indians - always there to
support our student athletes. Selected by the HHS coaches, the Debbie Brungardt
Fan of the Year Award is presented to an adult community fan, a student fan,
and a USD 489 Faculty/Staff fan of the year.

Lang, Archie, Groen named HHS outstanding athletes

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — MJ Melendez homered and drove in four runs, Nick Pratto had a three-run double during an eight-run sixth inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 12-5 on Monday night.

Melendez hit a 431-foot, two-run shot in the fourth against Dylan Cease and then had a two-run single in the sixth as the Royals turned a 4-4 game into a rout. Kansas City had its highest-scoring game this season and won consecutive home games for the first time since winning four straight at Kauffman Stadium last Sept. 20-23.

“I was saying it early when we weren't scoring runs,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “The process was great the whole time. I'm happy for the guys that they're having that success, but I'm more happy they haven't changed their work or thought process.

"I'm really happy for them, because we've struggled to win games. It takes belief that you can do it.”

Jose Cuas (2-0) relieved Zack Greinke with two out in the sixth and retired the only batter he faced, then watched as Kansas City's offense handed him the victory.

The Royals are averaging nearly 7 1/2 runs per game in May.

“Balls are starting to fall,” Melendez said. “Earlier this season we had some games where we hit the ball really hard, just right at people. You can see how it affects the whole game.”

Cease (2-2) gave up seven runs on nine hits in five-plus innings as his ERA rose from 4.58 to 5.58. The right-hander had a 2.20 ERA in 32 starts last season, when he finished second in AL Cy Young Award voting.

“Just got to keep feeling the process,” Cease said. “The results are disappointing. Honestly, today was better than the last couple of starts. I was throwing in the zone much better. Just working through some things right now but I think it’s close. Just got to keep going.”

Gavin Sheets homered for the White Sox, a 423-foot drive to center off Greinke in the sixth that tied the game at 4-4. Andrew Vaughn had a two-run double for Chicago in the third that made it 3-1.

Jackie Bradley Jr. had a two-run double in the sixth for the Royals and finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

“It feels good, any way you can help the team,” Bradley said. “I've still got a lot to improve on.”

Cease gave up a single, a hit batter and a walk to start the sixth. Reliever Aaron Bummer allowed an RBI single by Michael Massey, followed by Bradley's double. After two outs and a walk, Melendez came through with his big hit to chase Bummer. Jimmy Lambert came on, issued a walk and gave up Pratto's bases-clearing double.

“One quality at-bat after the other,” Quatraro said. “Massey got the big hit to start it and Jackie extended it.”

Royals: Placed LHP Ryan Yarbrough on the 15-day injured list with broken bones in his face after he took a 106-mph line drive off the bat of Oakland's Ryan Yoda on Sunday. Quatraro said Yarbrough had three non-displaced fractures in different spots around his right eye. Yarbrough never lost consciousness and was responding well to treatment. He was released from the hospital Monday night and will have further tests on Tuesday. ... Recalled RHP Jose Cuas from Triple-A Omaha. ... Acquired RHP James McArthur from the Phillies for minor league INF Junior Marin. McArthur was assigned to Omaha.

White Sox 3B Yoan Moncada may rejoin the team during this series, but it will more likely be when Chicago returns home to host Houston on Friday. Moncada, who has been on the 10-day IL with back tightness, is on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte.

Royals INF Nicky Lopez resumed light activity after going on the 10-day IL for an appendectomy on May 2. ... LHP Daniel Lynch threw 3 1/3 innings in a rehab start with Omaha on Sunday. He is scheduled to make one more rehab start.

The teams continue their four-game series on Tuesday night with Chicago's Lucas Giolito (1-2, 3.67 ERA) opposing Kansas City's Jordan Lyles (0-5, 6.69).

Kansas City (9-26) lost two of three to the A's (8-27) and dropped to 1-10 in series this season.

Perez went 3 for 4 with a 462-foot home run over the left-field fountains and scored three times. Maikel Garcia scored Perez with an RBI single, giving the Royals a 2-1 lead in the fourth.

“I hit the ball pretty good, but it counts as a homer no matter how far you hit it," Perez said. "...We have to do this more consistently and it was a great win today. We will try to come in tomorrow and do the same thing.”

FHSU Athletics JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State track and field
teams had another banner day on the final day of the 2023 MIAA Outdoor
Championships Sunday (May 7), picking up three more conference championships,
nine All-MIAA honors, 11 national qualifying marks and two school records.

For the week, the Tigers had five individual event
conference champions (three men, two women), their highest total since 2017, 14
All-MIAA honorees (nine women, five men), their highest total since 2008, and
26 national qualifying performances (16 women, 10 men).

The Tiger women recorded their best-ever finish since
joining the MIAA in the 2006-07 season, placing third with 108 points. The team
point total was 20 points more than their previous MIAA-best.

The Tiger men racked up 79.5 points, their best point total
in five years, to finish in sixth place, just 3.5 back of fourth place.

Lyric Holman climbed to the top of the MIAA podium for the
fifth time in her career after winning the 200m dash finals with a time of
23.82. It was a wind-legal lifetime best for the Junction City, Kan. native
that improved her season-best by 0.16 seconds. The senior also finished fifth
in the 100m dash with a season-best time of 11.45 that ranks 10th in NCAA
Division II this season.

After breaking the school record with a time of 10.23 in the
100m dash prelims, Philip Landrum duplicated that effort in the finals on
Sunday to finish in first place by a full tenth of a second. It was Landrum's
fourth conference championship, including two relay titles and a pair of
individual championships.

Regan Hodsden continued her impressive sophomore season for
the Tigers, earning her fifth All-MIAA medal of the year after winning the
5,000m run with a time of 17:54.48. The Mitchell, Neb. native was All-MIAA,
All-Region and All-American in cross country and earned a pair of All-MIAA
medals both indoors and outdoors. Jaycee Vath was sixth in the 5K with a time
of 18:17.42, contributing six team points.

Landrum capped off the weekend alongside Hayden Albright,
Ethan Lang and Nolan Churchman on the 4x400m relay team that finished second
with a school-record time of 3:10.52. The quartet previously won the indoor
4x400m title before climbing onto the All-MIAA podium for the second time this
year on Sunday.

The women's 4x400m relay team of Holman, Reba Mader, Taylor
Savolt and Mattie Rossi also broke the school record en route to an All-MIAA
finish. The Tigers crossed the line in 3:44.72, 0.4 seconds ahead of the
previous school record.

Earlier in the day Savolt and Rossi both finished on the
All-MIAA podium in the 400m hurdles. Savolt ran a lifetime best 59.45 to finish
second, climbing into sixth on the NCAA Division II national performance list
this season, while Rossi was just behind in third with a time of 59.55. Chloe
Stanley was sixth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:04.51, giving the Tigers
17 team points from the single race. Rossi earlier finished fifth in the 100m
hurdles with a time of 14.09.

Emily Salmans earned her third All-MIAA medal with a
second-place finish in the 1,500m run, completing the race in 4:38.77. Faith
Little was sixth in the same race with a time of 4:40.56, earning three team
points and etching her name in seventh on the FHSU DII era performance chart. Salmans
later finished sixth in the 800m run finals with a time of 2:17.25.

Ethan Lang is now the owner of 12 All-MIAA awards after
finishing third in the 800m run finals with a time of 1:53.00. Aaron Mangan
(1:55.11) was fifth in that race and Trever Medina (1:56.35) was sixth, giving
the Tigers 13 team points from one middle distance race. Medina also
contributed five team points in the 1,500m run via a fourth-place finish
(3:49.76).

Albright finished fourth in the 400m dash finals after
crossing the line in 47.91, good for five team points. He also teamed up with
Landrum, Kenny Fritsch and Toby Wahlmeier to run the 4x100m relay in 40.83,
good for fifth place and four more team points.

The women's 4x100m relay team of Jasey Downing, Kinley
Brown, Tori Poe and Holman opened the day with a time of 46.67, good for fifth
place and four team points.

Two Tigers scored team points in field events on Sunday,
including Jessica Saunders finishing fifth in the discus throw with a top toss
of 134-3 and Dayton Williams placing seventh in the high jump after a clearance
of the bar at 6-9.

The Tigers will return to action next Saturday (May 13) at
the Loper Twilight in Kearney, Neb. with one last chance to improve their
standing on the national qualifying list. The 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships
are scheduled for May 25-27 in Pueblo, Colo.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Oakland Athletics won consecutive games for the first time this season as Ryan Noda had a triple and double, reaching base four times in a 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.

Noda was 5 for 7 with three doubles, a triple, four runs and four RBIs in the first two games of the series between teams tied for the worst record in the major leagues at 8-26.

“He's swinging the bat,” Oakland manager Mark Kotsay said. “He's learned early in the season that when you're as patient as he's been coming through the minor leagues, these big-league guys will attack you. He's been a little more aggressive in the zone and that's created some results.”

Noda is just trying to keep an even keel.

“My job is to get on base any way I can,” he said. “The last two days I've been doing a pretty good job of it. I'm just sticking to my approach and grinding it out. I've been getting good pitches and not missing them.”

Ken Waldichuk (1-2) allowed four runs, six hits and six walks in five innings with six strikeouts. His 115 pitches were the most he's thrown in his major-league career.

“I really wanted to get through five and help out the bullpen a little bit,” Waldichuk said. “I'm really happy that Kots let me stay out there.

"I was battling a lot with my command. Once I walked (Michael Massey leading off the fifth), I knew it was go time.”

Zach Jackson retired Bobby Witt Jr. on a game-ending groundout with two on for his first save this season.

Brady Singer (2-4) gave up five runs and six hits in four innings.

Kansas City honored Lorenzo Cain in a pregame ceremony. A member of the 2015 World Series champions, Cain signed a one-day contract to retire with the Royals. The team drew 29,549, its highest home crowd since opening day.

The Royals had seven baserunners in the last three innings but didn't score.

"To leave that many guys stranded you have to have some good at-bats, too, to put them on base,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “We put a lot of good at-bats together so there is a flip side to everything.”

Maikel Garcia hit a two-out RBI double in the first, but Esteury Ruiz's two-run single in the second and JJ Bleday's homer in the third built a 3-1 lead. Ryan Noda hit an RBI triple in the fourth and scored on Brent Rooker's double.

It marked the first series win of season for the Athletics after losing their first 10 series.

“For this club, we know where we're at,” Kotsay said. “We know the hole we dug ourselves. Our focus is on winning each day. I don't think the weight of not winning a series was impactful. But it definitely does feel good to get our first series win.”

Freddy Fermin's solo homer and Witt's two-run drive, a 434-foot drive for his sixth homer this season, cut the deficit to one run in the bottom half.

⚾A's beat Royals 5-4, win back-to-back for 1st time

HAYS -&nbsp;The Hays High baseball team’s comeback attempt in their
final game of the Diamond Classic in Hays came up short of the close out the weekend
with a 7-4 loss the Life Prep on Saturday.

The Fire jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, scoring a run in
the first and two more in the second.

Hays got on the board in the bottom of the third, scoring on
an error by the Fire.

Life Prep score two more run in each the fifth and sixth
inning and held a 7-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.

In the inning, the Indians scored three times with two outs.


The first run of the inning scored on an error, Corbin Werth
followed with a two-run double making it 7-4, but the Indians could get no
closer, dropping the final game of the Diamond Classic.

Greg Hughes suffered the loss for the Indians. He allowed
four runs on five hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

Cooper Sanders, Hughes and Werth collected the only three
hits for the Indians.

Hays finished 2-2 at the Diamond Classic and are 10-8 on the
season. 

The Indians are off until regionals begin May 15th.

FHSU Athletics JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State track and field teams had an impressive day on day two of the 2023 MIAA Outdoor Championships Saturday (May 6), picking up two individual championships, five All-MIAA performances, 14 national qualifying marks and one school record. Both the Tiger men and women sit in fourth place in the team standings, with the men accumulating 32.5 points and the women compiling 32 points. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/philip-landrum/7181">Philip Landrum</a>&nbsp;is on to the finals of the 100m dash after a lightning-quick time of 10.23 that broke a 21-year-old school record. Landrum had the second-fastest time in the field and currently ranks inside the top 10 on the NCAA DII national performance chart. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/nolan-churchman/7168">Nolan Churchman</a>&nbsp;completed the 2023 multi-event conference sweep, winning the decathlon outdoors after finishing first in the heptathlon indoors back in February. The Saint George, Kan. native completed the 10 events with 7,158 points, currently seventh on the NCAA DII national performance list this season and just 34 shy of his own school record. It is his eighth All-MIAA medal and his third conference title. Two-time national champion&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/ryan-stanley/7194">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;now has a pair of MIAA titles after winning the pole vault with a top clearance of 17-5. The senior earned his fifth trip to the All-MIAA podium in the process. As the lone individual to clear 17-5, Stanley lifted the bar to 17-7.75 in an attempt to break his own school record as well as the meet record. FHSU Athletics JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Fort Hays State track and field teams had an impressive day on day two of the 2023 MIAA Outdoor Championships Saturday (May 6), picking up two individual championships, five All-MIAA performances, 14 national qualifying marks and one school record. Both the Tiger men and women sit in fourth place in the team standings, with the men accumulating 32.5 points and the women compiling 32 points. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/philip-landrum/7181">Philip Landrum</a>&nbsp;is on to the finals of the 100m dash after a lightning-quick time of 10.23 that broke a 21-year-old school record. Landrum had the second-fastest time in the field and currently ranks inside the top 10 on the NCAA DII national performance chart. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/nolan-churchman/7168">Nolan Churchman</a>&nbsp;completed the 2023 multi-event conference sweep, winning the decathlon outdoors after finishing first in the heptathlon indoors back in February. The Saint George, Kan. native completed the 10 events with 7,158 points, currently seventh on the NCAA DII national performance list this season and just 34 shy of his own school record. It is his eighth All-MIAA medal and his third conference title. Two-time national champion&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/ryan-stanley/7194">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;now has a pair of MIAA titles after winning the pole vault with a top clearance of 17-5. The senior earned his fifth trip to the All-MIAA podium in the process. As the lone individual to clear 17-5, Stanley lifted the bar to 17-7.75 in an attempt to break his own school record as well as the meet record. After establishing a new PR at the FHSU Alex Francis Classic last week in Hays,&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/xavier-robinson/7191">Xavier Robinson</a>&nbsp;cleared a personal-best 23-11 in the long jump to place sixth and earn three team points. <a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/womens-track-and-field/roster/chloe-stanley/7140">Chloe Stanley</a>&nbsp;racked up 4,660 points in the heptathlon to finish in sixth place, receiving three team points and adding 130 points to her personal-best. Savolt was second in the field with a national-qualifying time of 1:00.74, while Rossi qualified fifth with a time of 1:01.41. 👟Two Champs, Five All-Conference For Tiger Track and Field

SALINA – The Hays High Indian boys tennis team had three
individuals qualify for the 5A state tennis tournament at the regional
tournament in Salina on Saturday.

The Indians doubles team of Henry Fitzthum and Xavier Catura
earned a fifth place finish at the 5A regional tournament and will head into the state tournament with a
record of 19-4.

Hays’ Colin Clark was sixth overall in the singles and also
punched his ticket to state. He has a record of 16-11.

The 5A boys state tennis tournament will be held May 12-13
at Arkansas City High School.
