LIBERAL -&nbsp;For first time in 22 years and only the third time
ever, the Hays High boys tennis team is Western Athletic Conference champs. 

The Indians had a clean sweep Monday in Liberal. Colin Clark won No. 1 Singles, Ken Shaffer No. 2
Singles, Xavier Catura and Kale Schwien No. 1 Doubles and Henry Fitzhum and
Carsen Riat No. 2 Doubles. All went 4-0 on the day. 

Colin Clark was named the WAC Player of
the Year and Kayla Brown the WAC Coach of the Year.

It's the first WAC title for the HHS boys since 2022. Their other title came in 1986.

The Indians head to Maize South Friday for 5A regional play.

HAYS - TMP’s Heuer Brungardt brought home a second-place finish at
the TMP Invitational Monday at the Smoky Hill Country Club in Hays. 

Hoxie’s Noah Dowell was the top overall placer with a five-over
76. Brungardt turned in a seven-over 78 and finished in a tie for second with
Larned’s Talon Reynolds.

Hoxie won the team title by 16 strokes with a team total of
350. Goodland was second, followed by Colby, Plainville and TMP. 

Ellis’ Austin Carroll was fourth with a 10-over 81.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs signed Travis Kelce to a new two-year, $34.25 million contract on Monday, wrapping up their star tight end as they attempt to win an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl, a person familiar with the terms told The Associated Press.

Kelce's deal with Kansas City includes $17 million guaranteed for 2024 and $11.25 million guaranteed by the third day of the 2025 league year, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because those details hadn't been released.

While not disclosing the financial details, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said Kelce would remain the league's highest-paid tight end, adding that it was a priority to “adjust his contract.”

The 34-year-old Kelce signed a four-year, $57.25 million extension with Kansas City in 2020, which followed a $46 million, five-year deal that he signed in 2016.

“Hard to put into words what Travis means to this organization and this city,” Veach told local reporters on Zoom. “Just a really special day and moment for this organization to once again recognize arguably one of the greatest tight ends to ever do it.”

Kelce, who was chosen by the Chiefs in the third round of the 2013 draft, already is their career leader with 11,328 yards receiving. He needs eight receptions to reach 917 and pass Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez for that record, and three touchdown catches would give him 77, dropping Gonzalez to No. 2 on that franchise list.

Most important, Kelce has helped Kansas City win back-to-back Super Bowls and three titles in the past five years.

“Every now and then you have one of these guys that are outliers,” Veach said, “and Travis is one of those players. It's not even May yet and today we had a chance to get out there in phase two (off the offseason) and Travis was the first one in line.”

It's not just on the field where Kelce is a star, either.

His relationship with pop icon Taylor Swift has taken him to another level of celebrity, while appearances on shows such as “Saturday Night Live” have helped to make him a household name. He hosts one of the most popular podcasts across several genres with his brother and former Eagles center Jason Kelce, and he will soon host a quiz show on Amazon Prime.

But it all began on the field, where Kelce has long been considered one of the best tight ends in the game.

He missed the season opener with a knee injury last season, and he skipped the regular-season finale when the Chiefs already were assured of their playoff seeding. Those two games cost him the chance to extend his streak of 1,000-yard seasons to eight; he finished with 984 yards on 93 catches with five touchdown receptions.

When the postseason rolled around, Kelce once again took his performance to another level.

He had seven catches for 71 yards in a wild-card win over Miami, the fourth-coldest game in NFL history. He had five catches for 75 yards and two scores in a divisional win in Buffalo. He had 11 catches for 116 yards and a touchdown in the AFC title game in Baltimore, and capped it all with nine catches for 93 yards in the Super Bowl against San Francisco.

Along the way, Kelce batted down rumors of retirement, saying: “I have no reason to stop playing football. I love it.”

“The odds of someone playing this far into their 30s is low,” Veach acknowledged, “but it does happen. There are unicorns in the profession and Travis is one of those. He's shown no signs of slowing down.”

The extension for Kelce comes one week after the Chiefs announced they had signed Veach, coach Andy Reid team president Mark Donovan to contract extensions. The team did not say how long those deals would last, but they are expected to keep the three most central leadership figures with the franchise through the 2029 season.

Patrick Mahomes, whom Kelce considers one of his closest friends, is under contract through the 2031 season. All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones, the third piece of their three-player core, signed a five-year, $158.75 million deal in March.

Along with rewarding Kelce for his continued superlative play, Veach pointed to several young players who will be due contract extensions in the next couple of years as another reason for getting the tight end's situation sorted out.

“We do have some younger guys coming up and like always, once the draft settles down, we’ll have a chance to address that,” he said. “Travis is an outlier here. We all know that. When you talk about Travis and his career and his legacy here, this is something we wanted to knock out of the park early on and shift our focus onto the young guys coming up.”

⛳ HHS boys third at Great Bend Invitational

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State will play in the 2024 MIAA Baseball Championship Tournament after locking up the No. 8 seed in the bracket, announced Monday afternoon by the league office.

The Tigers finished the regular season tied for seventh in the league standings, but will play as the No. 8 seed in the tournament via tiebreaking procedures with No. 7 Northwest Missouri State. The Tigers will draw top-seeded Central Missouri in the opening round, which is a best-of-three series hosted by the higher seed.

The Tigers and Mules will begin the series on Friday (May 3) beginning at 6 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. first pitch on Saturday (May 4). The if necessary game is scheduled for Sunday (May 5) at 1 p.m.

Tickets will be available at a price of $6 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3 for youth 6-17 and $3 for visiting college students. Kids 6 and under get in free. ⚾ FHSU secures first MIAA Tournament spot since 2013

INDIANAPOLIS - Fort Hays State senior golfer Morgan Brasser&nbsp;has been selected to compete as an individual at the 2024 NCAA Division II Central Region Championships, announced Monday by the NCAA. Brasser is the first player in team history to make four trips to the regional meet in a career.

The 2024 Central Regional will be held at Hillcrest Country Club in Bartlesville, Okla. May 6-8. Nine teams and six individuals will make up the 51-player regional field. The MIAA will send four teams and three individuals to the regional this year. The low three teams and the top two individuals not on those teams will advance to the 2024 NCAA Division II Women's Golf National Championships, set for May 21-25 at Orange County National Golf Club in Winter Garden, Fla.

Brasser has had an incredibly consistent senior season, posting a stroke average of 74.52 through 25 rounds so far this year. She set the school record with a stroke average of 75.82 last season and will break the mark yet again this year. Brasser had a season-low round of 69, tying the best round in team history, while carding 23 rounds in the 70s and turning in just one score over 80.

The Andale, Kan. native has seven top-10 finishes in 11 events this year, including six appearances in the top five. She won two events this spring, helping her tie the school record with six career tournament victories. Brasser fired seven rounds at-or-under par on the season. She is the fifth-ranked individual in the Central Region according to the Clippd/Scoreboard rankings and is the 67th-ranked golfer in all DII.

Earlier this month Brasser became the first FHSU women's golfer to earn All-MIAA honors four times in a career. The 2022-23 MIAA Player of the Year was a first team All-MIAA pick again this year after earning honorable mention status as a freshman and sophomore.

Brasser has competed in 42 events in her four seasons as a Tiger, finishing in the top five 16 times and recording 24 top-10 finishes. She has 19 rounds at-or-under par in her career, including eight sub-par rounds and 11 at even-par. Her career stroke average of 76.53 in 96 rounds is a school record.

Brasser finished t-11th at the Central Regional Preview in September at Hillcrest CC, posting rounds of 4-over 76 and even-par 72.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State junior&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/baseball/roster/ty-riley/7793">Ty Riley</a>&nbsp;has been named the latest MIAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week, announced Monday (April 29) by the league office.

The right-handed starter wrapped up the regular season with a dominant start at Pittsburg State, striking out 12 Gorillas in a 13-8 victory on Friday. After loading the bases with no outs in the first inning, Riley proceeded to retire the next 15 batters, keeping PSU scoreless through the fifth inning. He finished the game allowing three runs on three hits and three walks in 6.0 innings of work. Riley now ranks third in the MIAA with 73 strikeouts on the year.

🏃‍♀️ FHSU's Little named MIAA Track Athlete of the Week

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State added a piece to its backfield on Monday with the signing of transfer running back&nbsp;Dylan Edwards&nbsp;to a Financial Aid Agreement.

Edwards, who is transferring in from Colorado and will have three years of eligibility remaining, returns to his home state after playing high school football at Derby. Additionally, Edwards is a legacy Wildcat as his father, Leon, was a K-State running back who lettered from 1992 through 1994.

During his lone season in Boulder, Edwards played in all 12 games with six starts and rushed for 321 yards and a touchdown while also serving as a receiving weapon out of the backfield by hauling in 36 receptions for 299 yards and another four scores. He became the first true freshman in Colorado history with at least 250 rushing yards and receiving yards in the same season and just the ninth Buffalo all-time to accomplish the feat.

Edwards began his collegiate career on a high note, accounting for 177 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns as the Buffaloes won at No. 17 TCU, 45-42. He became the first FBS freshman over the past 20 seasons with three receiving touchdowns and a rushing score in his collegiate debut en route to Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors.

Coming out of Derby High School, Edwards was regarded as one of the top 200 players in the Class of 2023 by Rivals (No. 100) and ESPN (No. 140), while he was rated one of the top 25 running backs in the class by all four major recruiting services.

Prepping under former Wildcat Brandon Clark at Derby, Edwards helped the Panthers to a combined 42-7 record over his four seasons, including state championships as a freshman and sophomore and a runner-up finish as a junior.

In his high school career, Edwards rushed for 6,426 yards and 95 touchdowns on 622 carries as he produced 32 100-yard rushing games out of 36 total games played. He also recorded 556 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, 521 kickoff-return yards and three touchdowns, and he added 441 punt-return yards and three touchdowns.

DETROIT (AP) — Wenceel Pérez hit a two-run drive for his first major league homer, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 4-1 on Sunday.

“He hit one to the track last night,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “I guess he did a couple extra pushups this morning.”

Jake Rogers also homered for the Tigers, who have won five of seven. It was Detroit's 10th come-from-behind win of the season.

The Royals have lost two in a row after a four-game winning streak.

“I don't think we drove a ball after the first inning until maybe the seventh,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “We couldn't square them up.”

Detroit left-hander Tarik Skubal (4-0) pitched seven innings of one-run ball.

“He gave up a seeing-eye double and a two-strike base hit in the first, but he got another gear after that,” Hinch said. “That's what you expect from a guy who is going to anchor your rotation.”

Skubal struck out six while improving to 2-7 with a 4.65 ERA in 12 career games against the Royals.

“We knew coming in it was going to be a challenge. He's one of the best pitchers in the league,” Quatraro said. “Upper-90s velocity, location, plus changeup, curveball — you name it.”

Jason Foley pitched the ninth for his ninth save.

Royals right-hander Michael Wacha (1-3) permitted four runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Kansas City took a 1-0 lead on Bobby Witt Jr.'s RBI single in the first, but Pérez put Detroit in front with a drive to right in the bottom half.

“As soon as I hit it, I knew it was gone,” said Pérez, who is hitting .286 since making his major league debut on April 8. “And when we give (Skubal) a lead, the game is done. We know he's going to do the job.”

The Tigers made it 3-1 in the second when Rogers singled, took third on Parker Meadows' double and scored on Riley Greene's sacrifice fly.

Rogers added his second homer of the season in the sixth, and Skubal stranded runners on first and third in the seventh.

Wenceel Perez flew out to the wall in right, allowing Greene to take third, and Kerry Carpenter tied the game with a base hit. After Spencer Torkelson popped out, Vierling lined Stratton's 1-2 sinker over the left-field fence to put the Tigers up 6-3.

“I left pitches over the middle,” Stratton said. “They are big league hitters and they did exactly what they are supposed to do.”

The Royals bullpen came into the game with a 2.12 ERA in its last 21 innings.

“Stratton's going to pitch big innings for us,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “Sometimes during those high-leverage situations, it doesn't go your way, but he's done this before and he'll bounce back.”

The Royals scored twice in the ninth off Tigers closer Jason Foley, but Vinnie Pasquatino flew out to deep center to end the game.

“I threw a four-seamer up and got him,” Foley said. “He's a really good hitter, so it felt great to get him out.”

The Tigers won despite four infield errors, two by Javier Báez.

“We can't keep winning games like that,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “The fight in this team is really good, but this is unsustainable. You give them extra outs, and then Foley is looking at (Bobby) Witt Jr. and Pasquatino in the ninth inning.”

⚾ Vierling's 3-run homer highlights 5-run 7th as Tigers beat Royals

&nbsp; KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Softball will be the No. 10 seed in the 10-team MIAA Softball Championship Tournament, set to begin on Wednesday in Edmond, Okla. The Tigers will take on No. 7 seed Missouri Western in the opening round on Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m. The tournament will be held at Gerry Pinkston Stadium, home of the University of Central Oklahoma softball team.

This season the tournament expanded to 10 teams and will be a single-elimination format. In past years, the tournament had an eight-team double elimination format.

Due to a suspended game on Saturday, there is still potential that Missouri Western can tie for sixth in the MIAA standings with Emporia State. However, Emporia State holds the tiebreak for the No. 6 seed should the teams finish in a tie. Emporia State and Washburn will resume Game 2 of their conference doubleheader on Monday, which was suspended in the sixth inning on Saturday due to weather.

The winner of the Fort Hays State vs. Missouri Western game on Wednesday will move on to the tournament quarterfinals Thursday night to meet No. 2 seed Pittsburg State at 6:30 p.m. Fort Hays State enters the tournament at 26-24 overall, while Missouri Western is 31-19 overall.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs had two distinct holes on their roster as they headed into the offseason.

The two-time defending Super Bowl champions filled them with their first two picks in the NFL draft.

While every general manager talks about taking “the best player available,” and some make a surprising pick that goes against the grain, Brett Veach did exactly what was expected. The Chiefs' GM moved up modestly in the first round to take&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-kansas-city-nfl-draft-281f23c4474ec86771102ddb941bcd45#:~:text=(AP)%20%E2%80%94%20The%20Kansas%20City,Hill%20was%20on%20the%20roster.">Texas burner Xavier Worthy</a>, instantly upgrading what was one of the league's worst wide receiving corps last year, then made another minor trade-up in Round 2 to take BYU's Kingsley Suamataia, potentially filling a glaring hole at left tackle.

“We just let the board play out and saw the value there,” Veach said.

Indeed, the Chiefs' draft board played out perfectly.

Worthy set the NFL combine record by running the 40-yard dash in 4.21 seconds, giving Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes a legitimate deep threat for the first time since they traded Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins. Worthy is also an underrated route-runner with sure hands, something the Chiefs lacked while leading the league in dropped passes.

The Chiefs hope Worthy can pair well with Marquise Brown, whom they signed in free agency, and Rashee Rice, whose future is up in the air while dealing with legal trouble stemming from a street racing crash in Texas.

“It doesn’t hurt to have down-the-field speed,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. "We’ve functioned without the great speed down the field and done well, (but) if you have an opportunity to get somebody that you think is a good player — just not a speed guy but a good football player — I think you probably need to take advantage of that.”

The issue then becomes giving Mahomes time to get the ball to those guys, and that's where Suamataia comes into the picture.

Many scouts gave him a first-round grade, yet the 6-foot-5, 328-pound offensive tackle fell to Kansas City late in the second round, and he could start from Day 1. The Chiefs allowed Donovan Smith to reach free agency, so Suamataia will likely compete with Wanya Morris and Lucas Niang for the opportunity to protect Mahomes' blind side.

“If I do get the opportunity to be his blindside, shoot, that would mean the world to me,” Suamataia said. “I’m just ready to come in wherever I best fit on the team and just get it rolling from there.”

The Chiefs did not have a third-round selection, so they used their two fourth-rounders on less pressing holes at tight end and safety. PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Fort Hays State baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Pittsburg State on the final day of the 2024 regular season Saturday, losing 14-2 in the opener before falling 10-9 in the second contest on a walk-off home run. The Tigers conclude the regular season 25-24 overall and 12-21 in conference play, securing a winning record in the regular season for the first time since 2013. The Gorillas move to 32-16 on the year and 22-11 in league action with the sweep.

With multiple games yet to play around the conference, the Tigers currently sit alone in seventh place in the conference standings. Three teams can match FHSU in the win column, one of which could pass the Tigers in the standings. However, because of the Tigers' 2-1 series win against Emporia State and their sweep of Northeastern State, FHSU is in a comfortable position to secure its first trip to the postseason since 2013. 

Final seeds and matchups for the 2024 MIAA Baseball Championship will be announced at the conclusion of the regular season, currently set for Monday afternoon (weather pending).

Game 1: Pittsburg State 14, Fort Hays State 2 After rattling off 15 hits in Friday's series-opening win, the Tiger bats struggled to get going in the opener, compiling just four base knocks. FHSU's first seven batters were retired, while Pittsburg State took control with three runs in the first and three more in the second. Luis Ayala&nbsp;singled in the third for the first Tiger baserunner, but the catcher was stranded at first before the Gorillas scored two more in the bottom of the inning.

The Tigers loaded the bases in the fifth, but were unable to push across a run. The Gorillas continued to pile on in the bottom of the frame, scoring five more to push their lead to 13-0.

Fort Hays State got on the board in the top of the sixth when Isaiah Ural&nbsp;smacked a one-out single to left. Kyle Morrell&nbsp;followed with a pinch-hit home run to left, driving in the only two runs of the contest for the Tigers. Pittsburg State wrapped up the scoring with one more run in the bottom of the inning.

Ayala, Ural, Morrell and Jose Cintron&nbsp;had the four Tiger base knocks. Freshman Rafael Espinoza&nbsp;(4-2) took the loss after allowing eight runs on 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings. He struck out two batters and did not walk a batter. Brandon Chavez&nbsp;retired both batters he faced, including one strikeout.

Game 2: Pittsburg State 10, Fort Hays State 9 Fort Hays State bounced back offensively in the nightcap, compiling 12 base hits and scoring nine runs. The series finale started in the same manner as the opener - with a Cesar Saavedra&nbsp;home run. Isaiah Ural&nbsp;followed with another long ball two batters later, putting the Tigers on top 2-0.

Tiger starter Trevor Baugh&nbsp;worked around two singles in the bottom of the inning thanks to an inning-ending double play. Baugh went on to post five-straight scoreless innings, working around baserunners in each frame.

The Tiger bats added to their lead in the top of the third when Saavedra led off with a single. Ural doubled two batters later before Elliott Herrmann&nbsp;drove in a pair with a single. Trey DeGarmo pushed across two more runs later in the inning with a double down the left-field line, stretching FHSU's lead to 6-0.

The Gorillas broke through in the sixth, scoring two runs. Landyn Sterling&nbsp;entered the game in a sticky situation, facing the bases loaded with no outs and a 6-2 lead. The junior was up to the challenge, striking out a pair before getting out of the inning with a groundout.

A three-run home run for the home team narrowed the score to 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh, but the Tigers answered right back with three runs in the top of the eighth. Jamison Armstrong&nbsp;led off the frame with a pinch-hit home run right field, his third home run of the season. DeGarmo and Kyle Morrell&nbsp;kept things going with two singles before DeGarmo scored on a wild pitch, pushing the lead to 8-5. Ural later worked a bases-loaded walk, building the lead to four runs.

Three hits and one walk allowed the Gorillas to close within 9-8 in the bottom of the eighth, but Spencer Maley&nbsp;managed to get out of the inning by retiring two of the three batters he faced in the frame, including an inning-ending strikeout.

The Tigers went down in order in the top of the ninth before Maley retired the leadoff man in the home half of the inning. The next Gorilla singled before PSU won the game on a pinch-hit home run to left center, completing the comeback.

TOPEKA, Kan. – Fort Hays State Tennis closed its 2023-24 season on Saturday with a 7-0 loss to No. 13 ranked Washburn. The Tigers finished 6-15 overall for the season. Washburn improved to 18-4 overall and 6-2 in the MIAA.

Ines Latorre&nbsp;(No. 4) won the first set of her match in singles play, but saw her opponent rally for a second set win and a 10-5 win in the tiebreaker set. Fiorella Mendez&nbsp;(No. 5) won four games within her match, taking two in each set in her final match at FHSU. Grace Unruh&nbsp;(No. 6) won three games in the first set of her match, while Yone Pereiro&nbsp;(No. 3) also took three games in her match with two in the first set and one in the second. Irina Alfonso&nbsp;(No. 2) took a game in each set of her match, while Shreethika Vangala&nbsp;took a game off the No. 5 ranked player in the nation, Maja Jung, in the firs set of her match.

Washburn swept doubles competition by yielding only two games to the Tigers over the three matches contested. The only difference from the usual Tiger lineup was Latorre being paired with Vangala at No. 1 and Mendez being paired with Alfonso at No. 2.&nbsp;&nbsp;

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Fort Hays State fell twice to No. 12 ranked Rogers State on Saturday in the final doubleheader of the regular season. The Hillcats won both contests by shutout, 7-0 and 5-0, to claim a share of the MIAA regular season title with Pittsburg State. The Tigers closed the regular season at 26-24 overall, 10-16 in the MIAA, while the Hillcats improved to 40-10 overall, 23-3 in the MIAA.

Game 1: Rogers State 7, Fort Hays State&nbsp;0 The Hillcats took an early 2-0 lead on a first inning two-run home run by Abbey Rogers and never looked back as they tacked on four runs in the fourth and one in the sixth to win 7-0. Rogers went on to finish with two home runs and five RBIs in the game. FHSU scratched out four hits, but never got a runner into scoring position. The four hits were split among four players.

Sara Lllamas-Howell picked up the win for Rogers State, throwing the first 5 2/3 innings of the game. She allowed just two hits and struck out nine. Harley Culie relieved for the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing the other two hits with one strikeout. Llamas-Howell moved to 19-6 on the season with the win.

Savanah Egger&nbsp;threw 3 2/3 innings for FHSU and allowed six runs on 10 hits. Bailey Carlson&nbsp;relieved for 2 1/3 innings and struck out two, while allowing three hits. Egger moved to 14-11 on the season with the loss.

Game 2: Rogers State 5, Fort Hays State 0 The Hillcats used a similar recipe to win game two as they did in game one, using a home run in the first inning to take control. Kaylee Lyon drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to start the scoring, but Callie Yellin followed with a three-run homer to instantly make it 4-0. Lyon tacked on an insurance run for the Hillcats in the third with a solo home run.

Jade Sanders threw a complete game shutout for the Hillcats, allowing just three hits and a walk. She struck out five batters to move to 15-3 on the season. Morgan Schmidt&nbsp;took the loss for FHSU, allowing five runs in 3 innings of work with three strikeouts. She allowed four hits and a walk. Emma Montoya&nbsp;relieved for the final 3 innings and held RSU scoreless with just one hit allowed. She struck out four batters. FHSU's three hits in the game were distributed among three players.
