ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Avery Johnson threw for two touchdowns and ran for one, DJ Giddens rushed for 151 yards and a score, and Kansas State beat No. 19 North Carolina State in the Pop-Tarts Bowl on Thursday night.

Johnson, a freshman making his first start after Will Howard entered the transfer portal, threw for 178 yards, rushed for 71 and directed a 15-play, 72-yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter that put the game away and closed out a solid season for coach Chris Klieman's Wildcats (9-4).

Quarterback Brennan Armstrong rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown and threw for 164 yards in his final game for the Wolfpack (9-4), who fell short of winning 10 games for the second time in program history.

Kansas State led 21-7 late in the second quarter and 21-10 at halftime, but N.C. State rallied in the third quarter, thanks in part to some trickery. Trent Pennix ran for a 60-yard touchdown on a fake punt with 1:50 left in the period. But Armstrong's 2-point conversion pass was incomplete, allowing the Wildcats to maintain a 21-19 lead.

Johnson and Giddens took over from there. Giddens had six rushes for 25 yards on a drive that took 7:24 off the clock and concluded with Johnson's 8-yard touchdown pass to Jayce Brown with 2:48 remaining.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — When it comes to college bowl games these days, storylines often are as much about who's not playing rather than who actually is going to be on the field.

With many stars choosing to opt out of postseason trips in favor of entering the transfer portal or preparing for the NFL draft, matchups like Thursday's Pop-Tarts Bowl between No. 19 North Carolina State and Kansas State essentially become showcases for younger players and those older ones relishing an opportunity to take the field one more time.

“I am going to enjoy one last ride with my teammates,” Kansas State All-American guard Cooper Beebe said. "There is a lot to enjoy and I'm excited to see a lot of these young guys step out for the first time and see what they can do.”

The Wildcats (8-4) will be missing several key players, including quarterback Will Howard, who entered the transfer portal. They will also be without second-leading rusher Treshaun Ward and safety Kobe Savage.

That leaves freshman quarterback Avery Johnson to lead the Wildcats against a North Carolina State defense that will be without All-American linebacker Payton Wilson, who opted out to begin preparing for the NFL draft.

NC State (9-3) will also be integrating several new players into the starting lineup because of absences.

The Wolfpack will miss Wilson, who was the team's leading tackler as well as ACC defensive player of the year; however, there's still plenty of motivation for NC State to finish strong Thursday with the prospect of a rare 10-win season on the line.

“It's important to me," Wolfpack quarterback Brennan Armstrong said. "I think that's where it starts. Each person has to look at how important it is to them and take it out on the field.”

NC State has just one 10-win season in its program history. The Wolfpack went 11-3 in 2002, including a victory in the Gator Bowl. The Wolfpack won five straight games down the stretch to get into position to finish with double-digit wins. They won two of those games largely without Armstrong in the lineup.

NC State, which is appearing in a bowl game for the third time in four seasons, is seeking its first postseason win since 2017.

Kansas State will play its first game under interim offensive coordinator Conor Riley, who was promoted from offensive line coach after Collin Klein departed for Texas A&amp;M earlier this month.

KANSAS-&nbsp;The Kansas Shrine Bowl Board of Directors is pleased to announce Brice Kesler as its new Executive Director effective January 1, 2024.&nbsp; Kesler will replace B.J. Harris, whose resignation was accepted in November to step down at the end of 2023 to pursue additional career opportunities.

“Hiring Brice to take on the role of Executive Director is another step in the right direction for the Kansas Shrine Bowl,” said Drew Couch, 2024 President of the Kansas Shrine Bowl Board of Directors. “We put on a grand event with our football game to raise money for Shrine Kids. With the addition of our wrestling event and hopefully others in the future, Brice is the guy that will help lead the Kansas Shrine Bowl organization into the future.”

Brice has served as the Business &amp; Office Manager for the Kansas Shrine Bowl since March of 2021. Prior to joining the Kansas Shrine Bowl staff, Brice’s career began as a Business Development Executive and Sports Director for Rocking M Media in Goodland, Kansas. Brice then moved to North Platte, Nebraska to become the Sports Director at Eagle Radio before returning to Kansas and becoming part of the Kansas Shrine Bowl staff.

PHOENIX (AP) — Kansas was one of Power Five football's worst teams not that long ago, going through two full seasons with one combined win.

The Jayhawks began rebuilding in coach Lance Leipold's first season, went to a bowl game a year ago and now have a large trophy to take back home with them to Lawrence.

Jason Bean threw for 449 yards and all six of his touchdown passes to two receivers, and penalty-plagued Kansas outlasted UNLV 49-36 in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl on Tuesday night.

“I said it one time and I kind of chuckle, that we can be in the conversation for a conference championship," Leipold said. “I never would have thought I would have said that that quick at Kansas.”

The Jayhawks (9-4) tried to make things hard on themselves Tuesday.

Ranked 14th nationally for fewest penalties with 55 during the regular season, Kansas was flagged 18 times for 210 yards, including four personal fouls.

The Jayhawks made up for it with an explosive offense that produced 591 total yards at Chase Field, home of baseball’s Arizona Diamondbacks.

Luke Grimm had four catches for 160 yards and three touchdowns. Lawrence Arnold added six catches for 132 yards and three more scores, giving Kansas two receivers with three touchdowns in a game for the first time in program history.

Bean finished 19 of 28 and overcame two interceptions in the third quarter to lead Kansas to its first postseason win since the 2008 Insight Bowl, also in Phoenix.

“That's an example of this whole season,” said Bean, who took over as Kansas' starter when Jalon Daniels went out with a back injury three games into the season. “We've had our ups and downs and that's just a credit to our attitude to stay kind of even keel.”

Jayden Maiava threw two touchdown passes in the third quarter to rally UNLV (9-5) nearly all the way back from a 21-point deficit early in the second. He added a 50-yard touchdown pass to Senika McKie and finished 24 of 35 for 291 yards with two interceptions.

The Rebels just couldn't stop Kansas and came up short in their first bowl game since 2014.

A tough ending to coach Barry Odom's first season, but UNLV finished with its most wins since the Randall Cunningham team went 11-2 in 1984.

“I thought the progress that the program made was substantial from where we started back when we got the job and started working together,” Odom said.

UNLV got off to a fast start, moving quickly down the field for Maiava’s 3-yard touchdown pass to Vincent Davis.

Bean took over from there, hitting Grimm on touchdowns of 6 and 60 yards, and a 15-yarder to Arnold. Devin Neal's 1-yard run put Kansas up 28-10 at halftime.

Maiava rallied UNLV to 28-24 with a pair of TD passes, but Kansas kept scoring.

Bean hit Arnold on touchdown passes of 40 and 56 yards, then put the Jayhawks up 49-30 with a 43-yard TD to Grimm.

“We tried a little bit of everything,” Odom said. “Any good defense, the number of explosive plays, the lower the number is the better you're going to be as a defense. It sounds easy, but it's hard to do.”

Kansas: The Jayhawks picked a bad time to become undisciplined, but got away with it because of their explosive offense.

UNLV: The Rebels managed to climb most of the way out of the big early hole, but never could catch the Jayhawks and remained winless in bowl games since 2000.

UNLV: Odom has some success to build on for his second season and should have plenty of key players back, including Maiava. The Rebels had the nation's 71st-ranked recruiting class in the early signing period, according to the 247 Sports composite.

Kansas: Neal announced before the game that he will return for another season, and the Jayhawks' defensive front is loaded with underclassmen on the two-deep roster. Kansas had the No. 44 recruiting class in the early signing period.

Bean throws for 6 TDs, Kansas overcomes flags to beat UNLV 49-36 in Guaranteed Rate Bowl

UNLV is looking to cap off its best season in decades against a Kansas program that's appearing in consecutive postseasons for the first time since 2007-08. The Rebels had nine-straight losing seasons before former Arkansas defensive coordinator Barry Odom took over the program. UNLV has won at least nine games since Randall Cunningham led the 1984 team to an 11-2 season and is playing in a bowl game for the first time since 2014. The Jayhawks have put a long, dismal stretch behind them with two straight bowl appearances in three seasons under Lance Leipold. Kansas had 13-straight losing seasons before Leipold took over and quickly returned the program to respectability.

UNLV's defense vs. Kansas' offense. The Rebels had the Mountain West Conference's top offense, averaging 34.3 points per game. Their defense has been porous at times, allowing 402 yards per game. UNLV will certainly be tested, even after Kansas offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki left for Penn State. The Jayhawks averaged 434 yards and 33.6 points per game, and running back Devin Neal was eighth nationally with 211.3 rushing yards per game.

Kansas: QB Jason Bean. The sixth-year quarterback has been solid since Big 12 preseason offensive player of the year Jalon Daniels went out with a back injury after three games. Bean threw for 1,681 yards and 12 TDs with four interceptions in nine starts. He's also a threat to run, adding 259 yards and three TDs rushing.

UNLV: KR Jacob De Jesus. A threat anytime he touches the ball, De Jesus led the FBS in combined kick return yards with 1,019 — 157 more than the next closest player. He was third in punt returns at 16.1 yards per attempt and 12th in kick returns at 26.3 yards.

The game will be played at Chase Field, home of baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks, for the 12th time. ... UNLV was second nationally in rushing TDs with 37, behind only Liberty's 39. ... KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Isiah Pacheco trudged off the field after another unsuccessful offensive series, tried to sit down on one of the exam tables on the Kansas City sideline and promptly had it collapse on him, sending the Chiefs running back onto his backside.

Just about summed up Christmas Day for the defending Super Bowl champions.

In one of the sloppiest performances of the Patrick Mahomes era, the Chiefs allowed the Raiders to score defensive touchdowns 7 seconds apart, committed a slew of penalties, dropped more passes and were generally inept on offense.

Twice they failed to convert on fourth down in the second half, including once inside the Raiders 10 with the outcome still undecided.

The result was a 20-14 loss that not only denied Kansas City an opportunity to clinch the AFC West for the eighth consecutive season, but also dealt coach Andy Reid's team a crippling blow to its hopes of earning the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

After a 6-1 start, the Chiefs (9-6) have lost three of their past four, four of their past six and five of their past eight games.

There wasn't much worth cheering about for pop star Taylor Swift, who is dating Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, and who walked into Arrowhead Stadium alongside Santa Claus before the game.

The Chiefs went three-and-out on each of their first two shots with the ball, and things never really improved the rest of a soggy afternoon.

It was the turnovers just seconds apart that cost the Chiefs so dearly, though.

The Chiefs had one trick play work earlier in the game, when Mahomes and Pacheco split wide, and the running back motioned into the backfield for a direct snap that he took 12 yards for a score. But when they tried another trick play, with another direct snap to Pacheco, he tried to hand off to Mahomes and the ball hit the turf.

Bilal Nichols was there for the Raiders, scooping it up and rumbling in for a touchdown and a 9-7 lead.

On the very next play, Mahomes looked to his right and threw his pass late toward the sideline, and Jack Jones stepped in front of it. The Raiders defensive back coasted the other way untouched 33 yards for a score, the second pick-6 for him in as many weeks — and one that he appeared to cap by faking out giving the ball to a kid sitting in the stands.

So much for a Merry Christmas in Kansas City.

Still, the Chiefs gave themselves a chance when Mahomes hit Richie James for a 45-yard gain in the waning minutes, then found Justin Watson in the end zone a few minutes later.

But the Kansas City defense, which had been the lone bright spot throughout the game, allowed Zamir White to run loose for a first down that put the game away.

Mahomes was 27 of 44 for 235 yards with that TD and an interception, while a second pick was overturned upon review. He also was sacked four times, including three by Malcolm Koonce, who seemed to be in the Chiefs backfield on every play.

Pacheco managed just 26 yards rushing in his return from a shoulder injury before leaving the game in the concussion protocol.

Meanwhile, the Raiders were left smoking victory cigars in the visiting locker room to cap a victory that kept their own playoff hopes alive, and one that ended a losing streak to their longtime division rivals stretching to the 2020 season.

DENVER (AP) — Bailey Zappe had a feeling this would be the New England Patriots' night when he&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1739093010296471931">coughed up the football</a>&nbsp;at his 5-yard line on his very first snap and his defense bailed him out by keeping the Denver Broncos out of the end zone.

“It kind of nullifies everything that happened,” Bailey said after helping the Patriots deliver a near-fatal blow to the Broncos' playoff hopes with a 26-23 victory Sunday night.

“You don’t want to turn the ball over, but if they don’t get any points, that’s a win, of course,” Zappe said. “To have a defense like we do, I mean it’s phenomenal. It’s just awesome to see those guys play. They’re one of the best — if not the best — defenses in the entire league.”

Chad Ryand's career-long 56-yard field goal with two seconds left was the difference for the Patriots (4-11), who scored a pair of touchdowns in a six-second span of the third quarter, then fended off a furious fourth-quarter rally by the Broncos (7-8).

Ryland's kick capped a seven-play, 44-yard drive that began with 58 seconds left after the Broncos went three-and-out. Denver had tied it up with a pair of long TD drives and 2-point conversions on its previous two possessions.

Ryland came in as the worst full-time starting kicker in the league in field-goal percentage at 65% (13 of 20), and the rookie missed from 47 yards late in the first half on Sunday night. He also missed an extra point in the third quarter.

The Broncos were 7 1/2-point favorites,&nbsp;<a href="https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/">according to FanDuel Sportsbook</a>, making the Patriots the fourth underdog to win at Empower Field at Mile High in coach Sean Payton's first season. This latest upset left the Broncos with just a 6% chance of ending their eight-year playoff drought, according to the NFL's calculations.

“Our margin for error right now isn't what it needs to be,” Payton said.

Bill Belichick improved to 11-10 against the Broncos during his 24-year tenure in New England, denying Denver the status as the only opponent with a winning record against him during his time with the Patriots.

After falling behind 23-7, the Broncos tied it when Russell Wilson threw touchdown passes to rookie tight end Lucas Krull and wideout Brandon Johnson and converted 2-point passes to Johnson and Javonte Williams.

“We believed we would win the game,” Wilson said. “... It didn't go our way.”

The Broncos had a shot at completing the comeback when they got the ball at their 39 with 1:42 remaining but they went three-and-out, giving the ball back to New England with just under a minute remaining.

Zappe gave New England its first lead with a 15-yard touchdown toss to Ezekiel Elliott, but Ryland's missed PAT left the Patriots up 9-7.

“A lot of DBs, when they see a big guy in the open field they're going to try to go low," Elliott said. “I had a feeling they were going to go low and I knew if I got over this guy I had a good chance to score.”

Zappe escaped pressure and found Mike Gesicki with an 11-yard touchdown throw to make it 16-7, and when Marvin Mims Jr. fumbled the ensuing kickoff at the 5-yard line. Cody Davis scooped it up at the 1 and rolled across the goal line.

The Broncos' already pedestrian offense suffered a big loss when wide receiver Courtland Sutton went out in the first half with a concussion, and all Denver managed through 3 1/2 quarters was Williams' 3-yard TD run to open the scoring. Denver gained just 15 yards and had one first down in the third quarter.

The Broncos hold faint hopes of becoming just the fourth team since the merger to make the playoffs after losing five of their first six games, but they'll need plenty of help to get there now.

Denver's defense has carried the team all season, leading the Broncos back from a 1-5 start and into playoff contention, but Payton's offense hasn't done its part, something that was never in clearer focus than in the game's opening sequence.

On the game's first snap, D.J. Jones strip-sacked Zappe and recovered the loose ball himself at the New England 5-yard line.

The Broncos came away from Jones' trifecta empty-handed, however, when Williams ran three times into the teeth of the league's best run defense, including on fourth-and-goal from the 2 when Christian Barmore stopped him a yard shy of the goal line.

The Broncos started their next drive at the Patriots 46 but went three-and-out before finally exploiting a short field when&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1739097672743571612">Mims' 52-yard punt return</a>&nbsp;set them up on the New England 25-yard line for the drive in which Williams ran it in from the 3.

The Broncos sorely missed Sutton, who has 10 touchdown catches this season. He went out in the first quarter and was diagnosed with a concussion.

Hays snapped an eleven game losing streak to the Liberal Redskins with a 60-55 victory on Friday night.

Liberal didn't score for the first four and half minutes but the Indians built just a 2-0 lead. The Redskins took the lead and built it to seven by the end of the first quarter at 13-6. The Redskins led by seven on four different occasions, the last at 20-13.

Hays chipped the lead down to three at half time 27-24.

The Indians opened the second half on a 6-0 spurt taking a 30-27 lead and forcing a Liberal timeout. Hays increased their lead to six at 37-31. That advantage was their largest all game. Hays scored 23 points in the third quarter after 24 points in the entire first half. That was enough for a 47-45 advantage going to the fourth.

Liberal started foul early to get the ball back but Hays was able to make 11 of 16 fourth quarter free throws. They needed each one of them as Liberal had taked a 50-47 lead with 5:40 left in the game. The Redskins though scored just five points the rest of the way leaving Hays with a 60-55 victory.

Molly Martin led all scoring with a career high 25. Eight different players scored in the Indians season high 60 points. Hailey Contreras led Liberal with 20.

Both teams are now 4-3. Hays starts conference play at 1-0. Liberal begins at 0-1.

Hays allowed just five second half points as they ran away from Liberal for a 61-26 score to close out 2023.

The Indians scored the first four points and never trailed. The Redskins closed within one point just once and two points on two occasions. Hays led 11-8 at the end of the first quarter beating the clock with the final two points.

Hays used a 9-4 run to build their biggest lead of the half at 28-19. Liberal scored the final points of the half with Hays entering the locker room with a 28-21 advantage.

The second half was dominated by the Indians. Hays allowed just one field goal and five total points over 16 minutes. The Indian offense countered with 33 points.&nbsp;

Hays outscored Liberal 22-3 in the third quarter and 11-2 in the fourth. The final five minutes of the game was continuous clock after the Indians pushed their advantage to 32 and led to a 61-26 victory.

Izaac Fox and Jack Weimer each scored 16. For Fox it is a new career high. Dawson Ruder added 10.

Both teams are now 3-4 on the season. Hays starts the conference race at 1-0 and Liberal at 0-1.

Next action for the Indians is January 12th against Garden City.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kevin McCullar Jr. was going IN for a layup in practice this week when one of his Kansas teammates landed on his head.

You'd never know that he had tweaked his neck Friday night.

The veteran guard poured in a career-high 34 points against Yale, taking over during a second-half run that gave the Jayhawks the lead, and the nation's second-ranked team eventually pulled away for a 75-60 win over the Bulldogs.

"He's been our best player the whole year. Proved it again today," said Jayhawks reserve Nicolas Timberlake, who added 13 points. “Got nicked up in practice the other day and played through it. Easily one of the toughest players I've played with."

Dajuan Harris Jr. added 10 points and six assists for the Jayhawks (11-1), who trailed by as many as 11 in the first half and by a point at the break before making the final appear much more comfortable than it was all night.

Yale (7-6) shut down Kansas big man Hunter Dickinson, kept the Jayhawks from getting into transition and held its own on the glass. It also got 13 points apiece from guards August Mahoney and Bez Mbeng, who kept the Bulldogs in the game.

“We didn't play well early,” Jayhawks coach Bill Self said. “The last 24 minutes I thought we were pretty good.”

Kansas has had trouble with trap-type games this season, stumbling past Eastern Illinois between the Maui Invitational and a showdown with UConn, and struggling to overcome a slow start against Kansas City before facing rival Missouri.

That was the case again in the Jayhawks' last game before an eight-day holiday break.

They missed easy shots in the paint, took poor shots from the perimeter and allowed Yale to gain some confidence when Mahoney and John Poulakidas began knocking down 3-pointers. By the time Danny Wolf knocked down a 3 of his own, and Self called timeout, the Bulldogs had built a 25-14 lead in the closing minutes of the first half.

The Jayhawks settled down a bit, scoring the final seven points of the half, but they still trailed 33-32 at the break.

Then they turned up the defense in the second half.

Forcing the Bulldogs into a pair of shot-clock violations, and very nearly three more, the Jayhawks slowly pulled back ahead. And when they got the lead, they quickly extended it, unspooling a 13-1 run to take a 51-43 lead with 7 1/2 minutes to go.

McCullar added a pair of 3s during a 10-0 run a couple of minutes later that put the game away.

“The big thing for us, we have guys that can put the ball in the hole,” McCullar said. “It's about the defensive end for us. Not all shots are going to fall. We have to worry about the defensive end first.”

Yale hung with Gonzaga earlier this season, so coach James Jones knew his team could compete. But the way the Bulldogs played in the toughest environment they will face all season bodes well for Ivy League play.

Kansas was coming off tough games against Missouri and Indiana, so the Jayhawks were ripe for a letdown. Now comes a break before facing Wichita State in Kansas City, Missouri, in the Jayhawks' final tuneup before Big 12 play.

The website reported that the specially marked “K-balls” were tested at halftime and found to be underinflated.

The report is an ironic throwback to the 2015 Deflategate scandal that captivated the football world for parts of three seasons and led to penalties against the team and quarterback Tom Brady.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tylor Perry scored 17 points, including a pair of clinching free throws in the final minute, and Kansas State held on to beat in-state rival Wichita State 69-60 on Thursday night at the T-Mobile Center.

Cam Carter added 15 points, David N'Guessan had 13 points and nine rebounds, and Arthur Kaluma scored 11 for the Wildcats (9-3), who bounced back from a lousy shooting night in a loss to Nebraska to beat the Shockers for the fifth consecutive time.

“These games are always tough for a lot of different reasons,” Kansas State coach Jerome Tang said. “The game before Christmas, you're always concerned — Did your guys go home and not tell you? Some are flying out tomorrow morning and you wonder if they're already home for Christmas or not. But I just thought our guys were locked in.”

Quincy Ballard scored 12 points to lead Wichita State (8-4). Colby Rogers and Xavier Bell added 12 apiece.

The game, played just across the state line in Missouri, was a reunion for Tang and Wichita State counterpart Paul Mills. The duo were part of Scott Drew's original staff at Baylor, helping to turn one of the worst programs in the Big 12 into a perennial power.

“I really wanted to win,” Mills said with a smile. “You may have a friend on the other side but your loyalty is to your players.”

Kansas State was relentless getting to the rim in the first half, and the result was a bunch of fouls and a parade of free throws.

Mills was forced to juggle some atypical lineups in the closing minutes to protect five Shockers with two fouls apiece, and the Wildcats went 13 of 18 from the foul line over the first 20 minutes to take a 33-29 halftime lead.

“We shot a ton of free throws, and we shot it well from the free-throw line,” Carter said, “so why not keep doing it?”

Kansas State eventually established breathing room early in the second half on a five-point trip down floor. Carter was fouled and converted a three-point play, and Perry made both free throws after a technical foul on Wichita State's bench.

"It was about just staying together for 40 minutes. It’s a long game,” Perry said. “We knew it would be game of runs.”

Perry added a couple of 3s a few minutes later as the Wildcats pushed their lead to 58-47 with 7 1/2 minutes to go. And despite Ballard's best effort in the paint, the Shockers never could cut far enough into their deficit to give Kansas State a scare.

“We just have to be more disciplined," Mills said. “You can't foul, obviously, and give yourself a chance. You can't have a lot of turnovers and give yourself a chance.”

Burton signed a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday to wrestle at Fort Hays State University. The Tigers added wrestling to their list of offerings but won't start competing as a team until the 2024-2025 season.

The Hays High senior is a two-time state placer. She finished 5th in 2023 and 6th in 2022. This year Burton is ranked second in class 6-5A at 140 pounds and has a 12-0 record so far. Her career record sits at 85-34.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Ed Budde, who spent 14 years playing along the offensive line of the Kansas City Chiefs and helped the franchise win its first Super Bowl with a victory over Minnesota in 1970, died Tuesday. He was 83.

The family announced his death through a statement issued by the Chiefs. No cause of death was provided.

Budde was born on Nov. 2, 1940, in Highland Park, Michigan. He was a standout at Denby High School in Detroit before heading to Michigan State, where he was an All-American in 1962 under Hall of Fame coach Duffy Daugherty.

It was as a professional that Budde earned his reputation for being a reliable, hard-nosed lineman. He was the fourth overall pick of the Eagles in the 1963 NFL Draft and the eighth overall pick of the Chiefs in the AFL Draft, and ultimately chose to play for the upstart team coached by Hank Stram in the years before the two professional leagues would merge.

“He was a cornerstone of those early Chiefs teams that brought pro football to Kansas City,” Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement Tuesday. “He never missed a game in the first nine seasons of his career, and he rightfully earned recognition as an All-Star, a Pro Bowler and a Super Bowl champion.”

Indeed, Budde was one of the leaders of fearsome Chiefs teams that won AFL titles in 1966 and 1969, then beat the Vikings in Super Bowl IV. He was a five-time AFL All-Star and was chosen to two Pro Bowls once the league merged with the NFL, and he was chosen as a member of the All-AFL Team before his retirement following the 1976 season.

He was a five-time AFL All-Star and was chosen to two Pro Bowls once the league merged with the NFL, and he was chosen as a member of the All-AFL Team before his retirement following the 1976 season.Budde's son, Brad Budde, was an All-American offensive lineman at Southern California before he was drafted by the Chiefs with the 11th overall pick in 1980. They remain the only father-son duo to be first-round picks by the same NFL franchise.The elder Budde remained active in the Kansas City area after his playing career, serving as the longtime president of the Kansas City chapter of the NFL Alumni organization. He was joined by his son on stage at Kansas City's Union Station for the NFL Draft in April, where they announced the Chiefs' second-round selection of wide receiver Rashee Rice.“He was well-loved in the Kansas City community,” Hunt said, “and he was a great father to Brad, Tionne and John.
