KANSAS- The Kansas Shrine Bowl is proud to introduce the coaches who will lead the East and West teams in the 52nd Kansas Shrine Bowl presented by Mammoth on Saturday, June 21, 2025, in Dodge City, Kansas. Each classification 1A through 6A is represented on the coaching staff, while the Head Coach of each team is selected from the previous year’s Kansas Shrine Bowl assistants.

The West team will be led by Dominick Dingle (Wichita Heights) and assisted by Russ Wells (Wichita South – 6A), Mike Vernon (Hutchinson – 5A), Daniel Myears (Mulvane – 4A), Tyson Bauerle (Hesston – 3A), Butch Hayes (Council Grove – 2A), and Alex McMillian (Plainville – 1A). Wells (2020), Vernon (2021) and Bauerle (2018) have all assisted on the West staff in previous Shrine Bowls, while Bauerle also led the 2019 West team to a 26-7 victory as the Head Coach at Memorial Stadium in Dodge City.

The East team will be led by Garrett Michael (Sabetha) and assisted by Josh Koerkenmeier (Blue Valley West – 6A), Jared Swafford (Seaman – 5A), Clete Frazell (Chanute – 4A), Mike Berg (Wellsville – 3A), Logan Wyrick (Humboldt – 2A), and Roger Holthaus (Centralia – 1A). Among the 2025 assistants, only Wyrick (2019) has previously coached in the Kansas Shrine Bowl.

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Senior wing&nbsp;Achor Achor&nbsp;has left the Kansas State men’s basketball team for personal reasons, head coach&nbsp;Jerome Tang&nbsp;announced on Wednesday afternoon.

“Achor and I have decided that there are more important things than basketball for him at this time,” said Tang. “I hope some time away will allow him to reprioritize things in his life and allow him to finish his degree. We wish him well. My focus is always to help young men become the best version of themselves and to help K-State become an elite program. We are developing men who will be great husbands and fathers.”

The Melbourne, Australia native transferred to K-State this summer after 2 seasons at Samford. He appeared in 7 games, averaging 7.3 points, 2.7 rebounds and 0.7 assists in 13.2 minutes per game.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — You can count Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes among those who are not exactly thrilled about the NFL forcing the two-time defending Super Bowl champions to play three times over an 11-day span in the coming weeks.

The Chiefs are among four teams — the Texans, Steelers and Ravens are the others — who were picked to play on Christmas Day this year. But with the holiday falling on Wednesday, when the NFL has rarely played, those four also will have to play the prior Saturday to give them at least some rest. And the result is two short weeks following their games on Sunday.

“It's not a good feeling,” Mahomes acknowledged Wednesday. “You never want to play this amount of games in this short of time. It's not great for your body. But at the end of the day it's your job, your profession, you have to come to work and do it."

The Chiefs visit the Browns on Sunday, while the Ravens visit the Giants, the Steelers visit the Eagles and the Texans host the Dolphins.

On Dec. 21, the Texans head to Kansas City and the Steelers visit Baltimore, before the Christmas Day doubleheader that begins with the Chiefs heading to Pittsburgh and ends with the Ravens in Houston.

Mahomes was asked whether he has ever had three games in such a short span, he replied: “I haven't in football.”

He has in high school baseball, of course. Maybe basketball. But certainly not football, and not at the physical level of the NFL.

“All you can do is focus on the game. The practice you have that day,” Mahomes said. “I try to prepare my body all year long for this stretch. That's tailoring my workouts, tailoring how you practice and prepare, and the coaches do a great job of taking care of us on the practice field. We practice as hard as anybody, but they know how to dial it back when needed.”

The NFL has played on Wednesday in the past, the previous time in 2020, when the Steelers and Ravens had their game pushed back because of a COVID-19 outbreak.

In 2012, the NFL's opener between the Giants and Cowboys took place on Wednesday so the TV networks could broadcast Barack Obama's speech at the Democratic National Convention.

But prior to those games, the NFL had not had a Wednesday game since the Lions and Rams played on Sept. 22, 1948.

“It's a unique situation. You just have to manage it,” said Chiefs coach Andy Reid, whose team will have played on every day of the week but Tuesday this season. “It is what it is. You make the best of it.”

It's not as if the games involved in the Christmas stretch are throwaways, either. Each has significant playoff ramifications.

The Chiefs have already clinched the AFC West, but they are trying to fend off Buffalo and Pittsburgh for the No. 1 seed and first-round playoff bye. The Steelers are two games ahead of the Ravens in the AFC North heading into this weekend, and could clinch a playoff berth if things fall their way, while the Texans are two games up on the Colts in the AFC South.

So, how are the Chiefs approaching such an important stretch of high-profile games?

“The main thing is you get guys ready for the game. Give them a chance to get ready for the game,” Reid said. “They're going to do whatever you present to them. You try to help them out with that. Right now we have a normal week right here. We have to take care of business here.”

NOTES: LT D.J. Humphries (hamstring) did not practice Wednesday, though he has not been ruled out for Cleveland. “Every day he's gotten a little better,” Reid said. ... WR Hollywood Brown (shoulder) could begin practicing soon, Reid said, while declining to put a timetable on it. “He's chomping at the bit to get out there. But he's got to visit the with doctors and make sure he gets clearance there,” Reid said. ... CB Steven Nelson came out of retirement to join the Kansas City practice squad this week. He will not play this weekend but could be ready soon. ... K Harrison Butker (knee) will try kicking this week, though Reid was noncommittal on whether he would come off injured reserve. If he's not ready, Matthew Wright would kick against the Browns.

🏈 Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes on having to play 3 times in an 11-day span: 'It's not a good feeling'

TOPEKA, Kan. -&nbsp;Five individuals have been selected for induction into the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame Class of 2025. Awards will be presented during 2025 in conjunction with a KSHSAA-sponsored state function/ championship, or locally at the inductee's request. The Class of 2025 Hall of Fame inductees include:

Beverly Heier-Birney, Grinnell - StudentThe three-sport athlete from Grinnell, Beverly Heier-Birney is still the co-holder of the 1A 100m dash record with a time of 12.3 seconds. Track and Field is where Heier made her mark in Kansas history. At the 1983 KSHSAA State Track and Field Championship, Beverly took gold in the 100m, 200m and 400m races. Ultimately the outstanding performance contributed to Grinnell winning the 1983 1A team championship, which they would also win two other times during her career (1980, 1982). Her performance in 1983 was the sequel to her championships for the 100m and 200m races in 1982. She also won the 100m race in 1980. Heier was part of Grinnell’s 1A KSHSAA State Cross Country Championships in 1980 and 1981. When it was all totaled after her outstanding high school career, Heier won 21 state medals across three sports, including 11 of which were gold.

Steve Bushnell, Topeka - FacultyFor nearly two decades, Steve Bushnell guided one of Kansas’ most dominant baseball programs at Seaman High School.&nbsp;Bushnell, led the Vikings to 18 state tournament appearances, nine Class 5A state championships and four runner-up finishes in 21 seasons. In his 21years at the helm for the Vikings, Bushnell culminated a 401-103 record (.796) which included a record of 42-9 in the state tournament. Seaman won at least 20 games for 10 consecutive years during the Bushnell era. In 2018 he was named the American Baseball Coaches Association High School Division III National Coach of the Year. In addition to baseball, Bushnell was a middle school wrestling coach for 27 years and was named the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association State Middle School Wrestling Coach of the Year in 2012. For 29 years, Bushnell was an educator in the classroom before moving to the athletic director role at Seaman HS in 2020 where he served for three years before retiring.&nbsp;

CJ Hamilton, Silver Lake - FacultyCJ&nbsp;Hamilton is Kansas’ all-time winningest football coach with an amazing 447-98 record. At the conclusion of the 2021 season Hamilton retired after teaching and coaching at Silver Lake for 47 years. A graduate of Silver Lake Hamilton, began his coaching career with his alma mater in 1973. After a brief departure to coach at Washburn for the 1977-78 seasons, Hamilton firmly entrenched himself as coach in 1979. In his 47 seasons as head coach of the Eagles, Silver Lake made the playoffs 40 times. The Eagles won 39 Mid-East League titles and advanced to the state championship 18 times, including seven straight from 2002-08 and 11 times in a 12-year stretch from 2002-13. Silver Lake won the Class 3A state title in 2013 to cap that remarkable stretch -- the eighth state championship for the Eagles under Hamilton. The 18 state championship game appearances are a state record. In addition to football, Hamilton was the head coach for the Silver Lake baseball team that won state championships in 1975, 1977 and 1982.

Dave Hawley, Wichita - FacultyDave Hawley spent 42 years at the helm of Wichita-Collegiate’s boys and girls tennis programs where they won 59 state championships between the two programs (33 girls; 26 boys).&nbsp;In addition, Hawley produced 82 singles and doubles state champions in the boys and girls divisions. Hawley was named the Kansas Boys Tennis Coach of the Year by the Kansas Coaches Association in 1997 and 2016, and received the same honor for girls tennis in 2005. In 2017 he was named the 4A boys coach of the year and was the 4A girls Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2016. Nationally, he was named the USTA High School Coach of the Year and was part of the National High School Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Fame inaugural class in 2017. Hawley was named a “Distinguished Teacher” by the Kansas Association of Independent and Religious Schools in 2004. The tennis courts at Wichita Collegiate School were dubbed “Dave Hawley Tennis Complex” in 2005.

Klaus M. Kollmai, Wichita - Contributor

For 46 years Klaus Kollmai committed himself to students as a teacher, coach, administrator and official. Many recognize Klaus as “Mr. Soccer” for his instrumental part in getting high school soccer started in Kansas. For 13 years he coached soccer at the high school and collegiate level before becoming a soccer official for 26 years. When soccer was adopted as a KSHSAA sanctioned sport, Klaus was the lead rules interpreter for 10 years conducting numerous clinics and meetings across the state. From 1997-2001 Kollmai served as the Section 5 rep on the NFHS Soccer Rules Committee. Klaus was selected to work in the state championship match 19 times as the center referee. Kollmai was named the Kansas Boys Soccer Official of the Year in 1992, 1997 and 2014. Track and Field is where Heier made her mark in Kansas history. At the 1983 KSHSAA State Track and Field Championship, Beverly took gold in the 100m, 200m and 400m races. Ultimately the outstanding performance contributed to Grinnell winning the 1983 1A team championship, which they would also win two other times during her career (1980, 1982). Her performance in 1983 was the sequel to her championships for the 100m and 200m races in 1982. She also won the 100m race in 1980. Heier was part of Grinnell’s 1A KSHSAA State Cross Country Championships in 1980 and 1981. When it was all totaled after her outstanding high school career, Heier won 21 state medals across three sports, including 11 of which were gold.Steve Bushnell, Topeka - FacultyFor nearly two decades, Steve Bushnell guided one of Kansas’ most dominant baseball programs at Seaman High School.&nbsp;Bushnell, led the Vikings to 18 state tournament appearances, nine Class 5A state championships and four runner-up finishes in 21 seasons. In his 21years at the helm for the Vikings, Bushnell culminated a 401-103 record (.796) which included a record of 42-9 in the state tournament. Seaman won at least 20 games for 10 consecutive years during the Bushnell era. In 2018 he was named the American Baseball Coaches Association High School Division III National Coach of the Year. In addition to baseball, Bushnell was a middle school wrestling coach for 27 years and was named the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association State Middle School Wrestling Coach of the Year in 2012. For 29 years, Bushnell was an educator in the classroom before moving to the athletic director role at Seaman HS in 2020 where he served for three years before retiring.&nbsp;CJ Hamilton, Silver Lake - FacultyCJ&nbsp;Hamilton is Kansas’ all-time winningest football coach with an amazing 447-98 record. At the conclusion of the 2021 season Hamilton retired after teaching and coaching at Silver Lake for 47 years. A graduate of Silver Lake Hamilton, began his coaching career with his alma mater in 1973. After a brief departure to coach at Washburn for the 1977-78 seasons, Hamilton firmly entrenched himself as coach in 1979. In his 47 seasons as head coach of the Eagles, Silver Lake made the playoffs 40 times. The Eagles won 39 Mid-East League titles and advanced to the state championship 18 times, including seven straight from 2002-08 and 11 times in a 12-year stretch from 2002-13. Silver Lake won the Class 3A state title in 2013 to cap that remarkable stretch -- the eighth state championship for the Eagles under Hamilton. The 18 state championship game appearances are a state record. In addition to football, Hamilton was the head coach for the Silver Lake baseball team that won state championships in 1975, 1977 and 1982.Dave Hawley, Wichita - FacultyDave Hawley spent 42 years at the helm of Wichita-Collegiate’s boys and girls tennis programs where they won 59 state championships between the two programs (33 girls; 26 boys).&nbsp;In addition, Hawley produced 82 singles and doubles state champions in the boys and girls divisions. Hawley was named the Kansas Boys Tennis Coach of the Year by the Kansas Coaches Association in 1997 and 2016, and received the same honor for girls tennis in 2005. In 2017 he was named the 4A boys coach of the year and was the 4A girls Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2016. Nationally, he was named the USTA High School Coach of the Year and was part of the National High School Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Fame inaugural class in 2017. Hawley was named a “Distinguished Teacher” by the Kansas Association of Independent and Religious Schools in 2004. The tennis courts at Wichita Collegiate School were dubbed “Dave Hawley Tennis Complex” in 2005.Klaus M. Kollmai, Wichita - ContributorFor 46 years Klaus Kollmai committed himself to students as a teacher, coach, administrator and official. Many recognize Klaus as “Mr. Soccer” for his instrumental part in getting high school soccer started in Kansas. For 13 years he coached soccer at the high school and collegiate level before becoming a soccer official for 26 years. When soccer was adopted as a KSHSAA sanctioned sport, Klaus was the lead rules interpreter for 10 years conducting numerous clinics and meetings across the state. From 1997-2001 Kollmai served as the Section 5 rep on the NFHS Soccer Rules Committee. Klaus was selected to work in the state championship match 19 times as the center referee. Kollmai was named the Kansas Boys Soccer Official of the Year in 1992, 1997 and 2014. LIBERAL - Hays High continued their early season play with their first conference games of the season, traveling to Liberal on Tuesday

GIRLS: #8-5A Hays 77, #6-6A Liberal 50 Liberal was the first team to put Hays into a deficit scoring the first two points of the game on a pair of free throws. It was the only time the Indians trailed on their way to a 77-50 win. Hays scored the next eight points to lead 8-2. Liberal responded with five straight points but never took the lead.

The Indians went on a 15-2 first quarter run to push their advantage to 23-9 with two minutes left in the first quarter. Hays led 25-12 at the first quarter break then added the first two points of the second quarter to lead by 15.

Liberal slowly chipped away at the lead and closed within five before Hays led 38-31 at halftime.

Hays was never threatened in the second half outscoring Liberal by 20. A 12-2 third quarter run built the Indian advantage to 22 with 1:20 left. Hays led 59-42 after three quarter then outscored Liberal 18-8 in the fourth for the 77-50 win.

Zoe Winter led the Indians with a season high 13 points. Shamari Lewis led Liberal at 19 points.

The Indians are 4-0, 1-0. Liberal drops to 2-1, 0-1. Hays has won 12 straight Western Athletic Conference games. The 77 points is the most scored by Hays since 73 points in 2019.

Hays led 19-8 after one quarter and scored the first four points of the second for a 23-8 advantage. The Indians led by 17 twice in the second quarter. The second time was 29-12 with 5:00 left before halftime. The Indians though didn't score for the next four minutes.&nbsp;

Their defense though gave up just five points in that same stretch. Hays led 36-20 at halftime after a 7-4 spurt to end the half.

Hays was never threatened in the second half. The Indians outscored Liberal 24-7 in the third quarter. They hit five of eight threes in that stretch.

The continuous clock fourth quarter saw Hays empty their bench and win 70-34.

The Hays High Indians open WAC play on the road Tuesday in Liberal against the Redskins.

Both Hays teams are coming off appearances in the championship game of the Hays City Shootout on Saturday.

The Indian girls are 2-1 and won the title for the first time since 2001. The boys finished runners-up at 1-2.

Tip-off for the girls' game is set for 6 p.m., and the boys' game will follow on the Indians Sports Network.

🏀🎥 Hays High opens WAC play in Liberal

The Fort Hays State women's basketball team moved up in both national polls again this week, with the Tigers now sitting in sixth in both the WBCA Coaches Poll and the D2CSC National Media Poll.

After a pair of 30-point conference victories last week, the Tigers moved up one spot from seventh in the coaches poll while FHSU jumped eight spots from T-14th in the media ranks.

Fort Hays State is now 9-0 to start the season, making the Tigers one of 12 remaining undefeated teams in Division II. FHSU's nine-game winning streak is the third-longest active streak in DII. This is the fourth-best start to a season in program history.

The Tigers racked up 429 points in the balloting process of the coaches poll, up from 408 points one week ago. FHSU shot up to 310 points in the media poll from 202 a week ago after rising from third to first in the media's regional ranks.

This is the eighth time that the Tigers have been ranked sixth in the coaches poll during the program's NCAA DII era and the first-such occurrence since February 22, 2022. Fort Hays State is 12-2 when ranked sixth according to the coaches, most recently defeating Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State in the final two regular season games of the 2021-22 season.

Fort Hays State is the top-ranked MIAA program in both polls, with Pittsburg State joining the Tigers at No. 8 in the coaches poll and No. 10 in the media ranks.

The Tigers will resume their season next weekend (Dec. 19-20) when they travel to Hawaii for the Big Island Classic. FHSU will first play Truman State on Thursday (Dec. 19, 8 p.m./4 p.m. HT) before battling Quincy on Friday (Dec. 20, 10 p.m./6 p.m. HT).

 </figure>FHSU AthleticsThe Fort Hays State women's basketball team moved up in both national polls again this week, with the Tigers now sitting in sixth in both the WBCA Coaches Poll and the D2CSC National Media Poll.After a pair of 30-point conference victories last week, the Tigers moved up one spot from seventh in the coaches poll while FHSU jumped eight spots from T-14th in the media ranks.Fort Hays State is now 9-0 to start the season, making the Tigers one of 12 remaining undefeated teams in Division II. FHSU's nine-game winning streak is the third-longest active streak in DII. This is the fourth-best start to a season in program history.The Tigers racked up 429 points in the balloting process of the coaches poll, up from 408 points one week ago. FHSU shot up to 310 points in the media poll from 202 a week ago after rising from third to first in the media's regional ranks.This is the eighth time that the Tigers have been ranked sixth in the coaches poll during the program's NCAA DII era and the first-such occurrence since February 22, 2022. Fort Hays State is 12-2 when ranked sixth according to the coaches, most recently defeating Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State in the final two regular season games of the 2021-22 season.Fort Hays State is the top-ranked MIAA program in both polls, with Pittsburg State joining the Tigers at No. 8 in the coaches poll and No. 10 in the media ranks.The Tigers will resume their season next weekend (Dec. 19-20) when they travel to Hawaii for the Big Island Classic. 🏀 FHSU women ranked 6th in both national polls

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fort Hays State pole vaulter&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/jacob-clark/8482">Jacob Clark</a>&nbsp;has been named the first MIAA Men's Field Athlete of the Week of the 2024-25 season, announced Tuesday (Dec. 10) by the conference office.

Clark currently leads all Division II with his clearance of 17-2.75 at the Washburn Alumni Invitational on Saturday (Dec. 7). The senior is one of two competitors to surpass the 17-foot mark so far this season.

The Nottingham, England native clinched first place at the event in Topeka when he easily cleared the bar at 16-6.75 on his first attempt. He later soared over the bar at 16-10.75 on his second attempt before surpassing his national-leading bar on his second trip down the runway.

A five-time All-American, this the first MIAA weekly honor of Clark's career. He is the first competitor from the men's team to earn the award since&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/ethan-lang/7865">Ethan Lang</a>&nbsp;was named Track Athlete of the Week in January (1/30/24) and he is the first Tiger to win the field award since&nbsp;<a href="https://fhsuathletics.com/sports/mens-track-and-field/roster/ryan-stanley/7194">Ryan Stanley</a>&nbsp;last did so in April 2023 (4/18/23).

Clark and the rest of the track and field team will compete once more before winter break when they travel to Kearney, Neb. on Friday (Dec. 13) for the UNK Pre-Holiday Classic.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Walsh and German are the first All-America selections for FHSU Men's Soccer since the 2021 season when Taisei Arima and Alec Bevis earned All-America honors. Walsh and German give FHSU 13 different individuals who have garnered All-America honors in the program's 14-year history. For Walsh, it's his first All-America honor. German was a three-time All-America selection at the NAIA level before earning the distinction this year at the NCAA level.

Walsh is tied for the national lead in assists as of December 10 with 15, joining Frederic Benedix from Coker University. Walsh led the Tigers in points for the season with 25, adding five goals to go with his single-season FHSU record for assists. Walsh is a three-time all-conference performer, including first-team honors twice. He is a two-time D2CCA All-Region First Team selection. Walsh has 39 career points with 21 assists and nine goals.

German finished the year with 17 points for the Tigers, which ranked fourth on the team. He adds this All-America selection to D2CCA All-Central Region First Team and All-GAC First Team honors this year. All of his points were generated against conference opponents. He ranked second on the team in assists behind Walsh with nine.

Hays High's Ian McGuire and Dalton Meyers have been named to the Kansas Football Coaches Association 5A All-State football team and Tony Crough has been named 5A Coach of the Year.

McGuire played five positions on offense this past season and is listed as an athlete on the All-State team. He rushed for 890 yards on 163 carries with eight touchdowns. McGuire had five receptions for 271 yards and a touchdown. He moved to quarterback in the 5A sub-state and state title games and passed completed 6-of-14 passes for 81 yards, two touchdowns an one interception.

Meyers had 79 tackles and four sacks from his linebacker position along with 10 tackles for loss, three interceptions, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.

Crough adds the KFCA Coach of the Year honor to his Sports in Kansas 5A Coach of the Year honor he received over the weekend.

HHS defensive coordinator Kip Keeley was named 5A Assistant Coach of the Year.

Note: To be considered for the KFCA all-state team, a school's coach must be a member of the KFCA and a senior.
