👟 Saturday's KSHSAA state track and field results

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Nelson Velázquez homered and had an RBI double in a three-run 11th inning as the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-4 on Saturday for their eighth straight victory.

After both teams scored once in the 10th, Velázquez opened the 11th with his hit and scored on Adam Frazier's run-scoring single off Richard Lovelady (0-3). Maikel Garcia also drove in a run with a hit.

James McArthur (2-2) allowed one run in two innings, and Nick Anderson worked a scoreless 11th to get his first save.

Kansas City's Kyle Isbel left in the seventh after a pitch by reliever Garrett Cleavinger hit him in the face while swinging. Isabel remained on his feet and walked off with a trainer holding a towel on his face. The team announced that Isbel has facial lacerations and will undergo additional tests.

Dairon Blanco pinch-hit for Isbel and put the Royals ahead 3-2 on a sacrifice fly.

Velázquez had a second-inning homer and Bobby Witt Jr. extended his hitting streak to a season-high eight games with an RBI single off Aaron Civale in the third.

Kansas City reliever Chris Stratton got the first out in the seventh with a nifty reach behind-the-back grab on Amed Rosario's comeback. The right-hander then hit a batter and issued a walk, and was replaced by Angel Zerpa, who allowed pinch-hitter Harold Ramírez's game-tying RBI single.

Kansas City’s Hunter Renfroe hit a towering fly with a runner on second and two outs in the ninth that Ramírez lost sight of in left field, but center fielder Jose Siri was backing up the play and made the catch.

Jonathan Aranda hit a solo homer in fourth off Royals starter Brady Singer.

Both Civale and Singer gave up two runs and four hits over five innings.

Royals: INF Michael Massey, who left Friday’s game with lower back tightness, didn’t play. Massey has had occasional back issues since spring training.

Rays: OF Josh Lowe went on the 10-day injured list with a right oblique strain. Lowe has played in just 14 games after starting the season on the IL with an injury in the same area.

Royals RHP Michael Wacha (4-4. 4.35 ERA) and Rays RHP Taj Bradley (1-2, 4.00 ERA) are Sunday’s starters.

For the week, the Tigers earned three All-America trophies in addition to one second-team All-America honor.

Jacob Clark&nbsp;secured his fourth-career All-America trophy via an eighth-place finish in the pole vault. The junior surpassed the bar at 16-8.75 on his first attempt after clearing the bar at 16-2.75 on his second trip down the runway. This is the Nottingham, England native's first podium appearance at the outdoor national meet to go along with his three indoor trophies.

Taylor Savolt&nbsp;earned All-America honors in the 400m hurdles for a second year in a row, again placing eighth with a time of 1:04.36. The senior finishes her career with three All-America honors, including two first-team trophies and one second-team recognition. Her time of 59.15 in the prelims goes down as second-best at FHSU during the DII era.

Competing at the national meet for the fourth time in their career, Addie Berens&nbsp;and Ryann Brown&nbsp;finished 20th and 21st in the javelin throw, respectively. Berens opened the day with a top toss of 130-1 on her first attempt, while Brown recorded a top mark of 119-7 on her second attempt. Berens finishes her career as a three-time All-American, while Brown wraps up her time as a Tiger ranked fifth at FHSU during the DII era with a career-best heave of 159-10.

The Tiger men finished the week with 1.5 team points, while the women compiled one team point on the week.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🏃‍♂️ FHSU adds two more All-Americans on final day of NCAA Outdoor Championships

EMPORIA - Former Hays High standout Jordan Dale picked up his third All-American award and his second outdoor honor in as many seasons finishing in a tie for seventh in the high jump at the NCAA Division II National Championships at Welch Stadium Saturday. 

The Washburn sophomore cleared 2.03m (6-08.00) on his second attempt and then cleared 2.08m (6-09.75) on his second attempt before going out at 2.13m (6-11.75).

GREAT BEND -&nbsp;In their first trip to the state tournament since the 2022
season the TMP-Marian Monarchs earned the second fourth place finish in school
history Friday at the 2-1A state baseball tournament in Great Bend.

SEMIFINALS: Medicine Lodge 7, TMP 6 The Monarchs, the seven-seed matched up with the six-seed Medicine
Lodge in the first semifinal of the day on Friday and the Indians earned a 7-6
victory with a walk-off walk to advance to the state championship game and sending
TMP to the third-place game.

Ty Schmeidler gave the Monarchs an early lead, driving in
two runs with a two-out single to left, making it 2-0 TMP in the top of the first.

Schmeidler settled in on the mound and held the Indians hitless
for four straight innings all while allowing eight walks with seven strikeouts
over those four innings of work.

TMP scored two more runs on an error in the top of the fifth
inning making it 4-0 TMP.

The Indians finally broke through with a leadoff triple in
the bottom of the fifth inning.

They followed that with four walks and a TMP error that led
to six runs as the Indians took a 6-4 lead into the sixth inning.

In the sixth, TMP quickly loaded the bases and Logan
Baalmann drove a single to right scoring two and tying the game at six.

After TMP was retired, in order in the top of the seventh
Medicine Lodge loaded the bases and the third walk of the inning delivered the
Indians a walk-off walk in a 7-6 victory.

Baalmann matched his career-high with four hits and Carson
Liles and Schmeidler each collected a pair of hits. Baalmann and Schmeidler each
drove in two.

Baalmann suffered the loss on the mound. He allowed five
runs, three earned in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Schmeidler and Baalmann combined
to walk 15 in the game.

3rd PLACE: St. Marys-Colgan 10, TMP 0 With the loss the Monarchs dropped to the third-place game
against St. Marys-Colgan and it was all Panthers in a 10-0 win in six innings.

St. Marys-Colgan wasted little time scoring six runs in the
bottom of the first inning.

The Panthers took advantage of two errors, five hits, two
extra base hits building a 6-0 lead.

TMP’s Caden Dinkel settled in after the rough first, allowed
just four more runs for a total of 10 runs, six earned in 5 2/3 innings.

TMP’s offense held without a hit, and recorded just a single
baserunner, a Ty Schmeidler walk.

⚾TMP finished 4th at 2-1A state tournament

EMPORIA, Kan. - Three competitors representing the Fort Hays State men's and women's track and field team were in action on day two of the 2024 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships Friday (May 24), with one lifting an All-America trophy.

Grand Bradley&nbsp;earned his second All-America trophy of the season in the 3,000m steeplechase, placing eighth with a personal-best time of 8:51.13. Bradley improved his DII program record in the process, shaving more than two seconds off his previous best and closing within three seconds of John Mason's historic school record. The junior sat in 10th through the first 1.5 laps before climbing into the top eight and All-America territory, where he would remain for the rest of the race. He picked up his first All-America honor as a part of the indoor distance medley relay that placed sixth earlier this season.

Taylor Savolt&nbsp;completed the final three events of the heptathlon Friday morning, finishing 14th with a total score of 5,061. The senior opened the day with top long jump of 17-11.75, netting 694 points. She added 591 points with a top heave of 118-1 in the javelin before running the 800m in 2:24.47, tacking on another 764 points to her total.

Competing at the national meet for a third time in his career, Dayton Williams&nbsp;was one of four competitors unable to clear the initial bar of 6-8. In addition to collecting the DII era indoor school record of 6-11.5 earlier this season, Williams finishes his career as one of just two Tigers in DII history to clear the seven-foot mark outdoors, surpassing 7-0.25 at the 2024 MIAA Championships.

EMPORIA, Kan. - Four student-athletes from the Fort Hays State men's and women's track and field teams competed on day one of the 2024 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships Thursday (May 23), with one earning second-team All-America honors and two advancing to the finals in track events.

Making his debut at the national meet, freshman Keomonia Archie&nbsp;garnered second-team All-America status by finishing 11th in the long jump with a top leap of 24-2.5. The Hays native opened the day with a foul before posting a distance of 24-1.75 on his second attempt. Archie saved the best for last, adding two centimeters to his official mark to move up one spot in the standings.

Grant Bailey&nbsp;secured a spot in tomorrow's 3,000m steeplechase finals with a fourth-place finish in his preliminary heat, posting a time of 9:05.28. Bradley sat in the sixth position with two laps to go before moving into fifth by the start of the bell lap and finally overtaking fourth with just over 200 meters to go. He finished off the race with his fastest lap of the evening, clocking 1:05.86 over the final 400 meters. 🏃‍♂️ Strong start for Tigers at DII Nationals

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Seth Lugo became the American League's first eight-game winner, Michael Massey and Bobby Witt Jr, homered and the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 8-1 on Friday night for their seventh consecutive victory.

Lugo (8-1) allowed one run and four hits, lowering his AL-best ERA from 1.79 to to 1.74. Only Philadelphia's Ranger Suárez has more victories in the majors with nine.

The Royals are a season-best 14-game over .500 at 33-19. Kansas City was 15-37 after 52 games last season and did not get to 33 wins until Aug. 1.

Massey put Kansas City ahead 5-1 in the fifth with a three-run homer off Tyler Alexander (2-3). Massey, who has 21 RBIs in his last 21 games, left in the sixth due to lower back tightness.

Witt extended his hitting streak to seven games with a solo homer against Alexander in a two-run seventh that made it 8-1. Both dugouts were warned by the umpires after Alexander hit the next batter after Witt, Vinnie Pasquantino, with a 90.3 mph fastball.

Tampa Bay has lost a season-high five in a row to fall to 25-27.

The Rays loaded the bases with one out in the first against Lugo, but scored just once on Jonathan Aranda’s fielder’s choice grounder.
