One of the highlights of the year for Holy Family Elementary School students is the annual Field Day, where students compete in a variety of activities outdoors at the end of the year.

But with students wrapping up their year online due to COVID-19, Megan Gottschalk,&nbsp;Holy Family Elementary School physical education teacher, has adapted the activity to be completed at home on May 13 with fun one-minute activities using items found at home.

Students have also been asked to submit videos of the activities so others can enjoy the festivities while separated.

"It will be a lot of fun to see all the kids' videos," Gottschalk said.

"I will send mine so everyone can laugh at me trying to do all of these different one-minute challenges," Gottschalk said.

The challenges will be sent, with video demonstrations to the students via their online learning platforms, and will include seven activities.

"I have seven activities planned because we normally do seven stations at school," Gottschalk said.

In the regular event, each challenge would last about 15 minutes, but they were shortened to make the event easier for students and parents as they complete the challenges at home.

"That would be way too long for the kids to try to figure that out," Gottschalk said.

The children will get a scorecard that will be submitted to tally points that will be scored during each challenge.

All of the challenges will involve things the children can find in the home, and Gottshalk said they are designed to be easy and fun.

One challenge will be a bottle race, where the children will lap baskets with a folded sock between their knees.

Another will involving trying to keep an inflated quart bag in the air for as long as possible and a towel scooter race, where students will sit on a large towel and "scoot" from one line to another.

Doing the event at home and with shorter sessions allowed preschoolers to participate this year as well.

And parents have been encouraged to also join in the activities.

"I think the kids will have a lot more fun if we can get the whole family involved," Gottschalk said.

🎤Post Podcast: Hays officials discuss Thursday's vote to accept roundabout bid

When the annual Holy Family Elementary school fundraiser Race for Education was no longer able to go on, a creative idea was born — giving students the opportunity to spread joy throughout the community and help raise necessary funds for the school.

"The Race for Education is one of our biggest fundraisers, and the kids love it," said parent and Race for Education volunteer Taryn Crawford.

Typically, she said, it is a fitness-inspired event, where children run, with sponsors donating toward the number of laps completed.

"This year, we had to switch it up since we are not in school and not supposed to be gathering,"&nbsp;Crawford said.

So this year, the fundraiser was changed to a kindness-inspired event.

"What we have asked the kids to do is do acts of kindness and that is what we are asking people to support with their donations,"&nbsp;Crawford said.

They asked for flat donations and, so far, the community has responded well.

"We have had donations rolling in," Crawford said. "We have been really excited that we have been able to move forward with this event."

This year would have been the 15th annual Race for Education.

"It looks different, but it's still helping us raise vital funds for the school,"&nbsp;Crawford said.

Since the school is private, fundraisers at Holy Family Elementary are needed for operational costs and the Race for Education is one of three large fundraisers hosted each year.&nbsp;

"They budget it to run the school, to keep the lights on," Crawford said. "It's used for operating expenses."

While the revamped fundraiser helps keep the school going, the students have embraced the challenge of finding ways to spread kindness with the actions.

"We are really excited the kids have really jumped on the new program,"&nbsp;Crawford said.

After they complete an act of kindness they fill out the deed on a colored slips of paper that are later weaved into the fence in front of the school.

"Something could have been pretty detrimental and tragic for us has really turned into something that I think brought our faith community together for our school," she said.

With schools shut down for the year, student work already started the annual Famous Figures contest will go online, giving the students the opportunity to showcase their talents presenting as people from history.

The program normally allows fifth grade students to go through a competition with their classmates, culminating with a countywide stage presentation. But with students out of school, the Hays Arts Council has come up with a creative solution.

"We decided we would still like to showcase the work done by those students," said Brenda Meder, Hays Arts Council executive director.

Classroom competitions normally would have happened right after spring break, but many of the students have already been working on the project for months.

Many teachers use the program as a big part of the semester, allowing students the opportunity to practice&nbsp;organization, public speaking and research along with the history of the individuals.

"It's a really neat way to end the year and it so informative and entertaining to watch what these talented students do," Meder said.&nbsp;

The presentations include icons from early American history, athletes, artists and politicians.

Students will now have the opportunity to submit their 2-3 minute presentation to be shown on the HAC's website and social media.

"I am very excited to see them. It is one of my favorite projects in the course of the year so I am really glad there is a way for them to allow this to come full circle — even if under different circumstances," Meder said.

With the classroom, completion removed this year any student in the fifth grade can participate, including anyone homeschooled.

And with sponsorship from the Hays Lions Club and the Heartland Community Foundation, award medals will be presented to any student who participates.

"We want the students who have the courage and the confidence to put their performances out there for us to share to receive one of those," Meder said. "So we are going to reward some incredible talent as these students wrap up their 5th-grade year."

The deadline for submissions is May 6 and, shortly after, presentations will begin to air.

🎤Post Podcast: Navigating the COVID-19 economic stimulus, part 2

Congressman Roger Marshall, R-Kan., said last week there are many reasons to be hopeful amidst the COVID-19 outbreak, including lower projected cases and successful implementation of relief programs.

"Based on the models we are seeing this week, we are expecting half the amount of coronavirus that we have been expecting, so the social distancing is working," Marshall said. "Kansans are doing a great job, so let's keep up the good work."

With the current projections, he said that it appears now that health care resources will meet demand, including ICU beds and ventilators.

The peak projection of cases in Kansas, he said has also been moved up to April 18.

Within a month of the peak, he said we could see people returning to work, with some social distancing measures still in place and larger returns to normal by June.

Part of this effort relies on private labs testing for the virus and even faster testing on the way.

He said the new test allows for almost instant results which can help to identify "hotspots," in turn leading to better isolation measures where needed — rather than the current blanket approach.

The new antibody test that will identify people who have recovered from the virus, perhaps without even knowing they were carriers, will also allow people that carry immunity to the virus to get back to work sooner.

"The testing is very important going forward, and we need every hospital and health department set up so they can do this quick testing," Marshall said.

Phase three of the federal government Coronavirus relief package is beginning to come online, he said, with most direct payments to citizens set to arrive this week, and Small Business Administration Loans also becoming available.

"Over half of the jobs in Kansas are dependent upon small businesses," Marshall said, "so when we get through this crisis, which by the way we are going to get through this quicker than anyone is thinking right now, that there are jobs for people to go back to."

The loans through the SBA will be forgivable if staff levels are maintained, he said.

"It has been very successful so far," Marshall said.

Local banks are issuing the loans, and Marshall said he is happy with the rollout so far.

He said one local bank in Great Bend issued over 100 loans for the programs as of last week.

The newest iteration of the program also includes loans for non-profits, contractors, sole proprietors and ag producers.

"Regardless of what type of business you own, you may want to reach out to your local banker and ask about these SBA loans," Marshall said.

"We have a listing of all of the connections, whether it is the USDA, the Treasury Department, or through the SBA as well," Marshall said. "We are trying to be a one-stop website."

As COVID-19 precautions shuttered doors at schools, colleges and universities across Kansas, the campus of NCK Tech is dealing with the reality of students having their hands-on education come to a halt.&nbsp;

The college, however, is taking innovative approaches to keep as many programs on track as possible and is looking at options including bringing back students to campus as needed after the stay-at-home order ends to complete what they cannot complete online.

"We are really challenging both our instructors and our students to try to find a way through all of this, and we are trying to be as innovative as we can help people learn these skills in an online format," said NCK Tech President Eric Burks.

If students need extra time to complete the hands-on learning, he said, they are considering summer sessions.

"Of course ,that is the most difficult thing about dealing with this entire issue is that the timeline is so uncertain," Burks said.

As the semester was nearing completion at the time of the shutdown order, he said many of the competencies had been covered already, so for many students completing course work online will allow the students to complete the year remotely.

But just like traditional colleges, the shift to remote course work so quickly brought concerns and difficulties to students and instructors.

"All of our fields are immersed in technology," he said, but they are in hand-on fields so to be "removed by a computer screen is a challenge. There is no other way to put it," Burks said.

In the nursing department, the state department of nursing allows simulation training to cover some of the required competencies, and instructors have worked with carpentry and other construction program students to adapt as much as possible into home-based learning.

"Obviously, none of it is going to replace dealing with a real human being and being there and actually doing it in person, but some of it can be simulated," Burks said.

Another saving grace of the timing of the order, he said is that many students had already completed their on-campus work and were completing internships, so as long as those businesses are operating, the students are still working toward their program completion.

"We are asking our students and instructors to be prepared to finish the semester completely online," Burks said.

But doing so means that many hands-on projects, such as their yearly house-building project, will be impacted.

If students return to campus before the end of the semester, they may yet be able to finish the house. If not, other options are being considered.

He said NCK Tech also has many projects ongoing in its automotive department and other various projects for the city — related to electricity, carpentry, plumbing and HVAC — that have been delayed.

And the school is reaching out to everyone with a vehicle in its shop to find out how the owner would like to proceed.

With the current restriction on groups of less than 10 in place until May 1, Burks said they are leaving their options open if the campus is allowed to reopen before the end of the semester — but stressed the safety of the staff and the students is paramount.

If the students are allowed to return, some of the projects may be completed while practicing social distancing with limited students working together at one time.

"I really applaud our instructors and staff for all of their efforts working through this and our students as well for being flexible and making the best of this situation that we are all dealing with,"&nbsp;Burks said.

Even with the sudden shift to remote learning, Burks said most students are handling the situation well.

"They understand the severity and the seriousness of this and that we are doing all of this to protect them," he said. "I think spirits are high. They are struggling a little bit but working through it together."

Even as course completions on campus remain a question, the college has already decided to shift graduation ceremonies online.

Graduation was scheduled for May 8 on the Beloit campus and May 9 in Hays.

"We are probably going to do a video or virtual graduation," Burks said. "Even if they lift the stay-at-home order, we will still have the mass-gathering limitations."

He offered the challenge to the staff to finds ways to embrace the virtual graduation by including things into the program that could not be done in person.

"We are pretty excited about the plans that we have and what technology might allow us to do to recognize and celebrate these students for what they have accomplished and for a big milestone in their lives," he said.

Guests were lined up and everything was in place.

Then as COVID-19 precautionary measures expanded, the studio was closed to visitors and everything was put on hold.

But the first one had been recorded, where I had an interesting conversation with music promoter, producer and founder of the Rockalooa music festival Matt Isley and his Dangerously Biased bandmate Sophi Thompson.

They had a record release show planned, for their first EP self-titled, but like the longer podcasts, that show was scrapped.

But they released the album anyway, and even though everybody’s plans changed, I still had the podcast about the current music scene in rural Kansas recorded.

So in the old tradition of "the show must go on," we put the podcast together, with a little tweaking.

The self-titled album was released and is currently available for download, but with a little luck, they will be back on the road soon, where you can hear their music live.

As for the bigger podcast project, once life returns to normal the project will be picked back up. In the meantime, our regular content will continue.

While the Hays Public Library building may be closed and the staff working from home through April due to COVID-19 precautions, digital services and some programming continues to be offered to provide area residents the opportunity to access entertainment and learning materials — even if they are stuck in their homes.

Digital resources still available include thousands of books, movies, graphics novels, audiobooks and music.

"You can access all of these things, and it's free, just like checking out a book at the library," said Callie Kolcany, HPL communications coordinator.

And if a patron would like something not currently offered, she said you can contact the library and make a request.

"That's another great thing that is available, requesting items," Kolcany said.

<a href="https://tlc.hayslibrary.org/#section=obrsignup">For anyone who has not used the services before, staff has set up a way to create a library card online and will allow immediate access.</a>

Kolcany said the biggest question they have received from people trying to access the digital resources so far centers around the PIN number needed for checkout.&nbsp;

That number is the last four numbers of the user's library card, she said.

Shifting services online is not limited to just checking out media.

"We have some programs that we are adapting to go online," Kolcany said.

<a href="https://hayslibrary.org/2020-poetry-contest/">Their 20th annual poetry contest has been adapted to go online as well.</a>

The contest started on the April 1, accepting original poems from anyone 16 and older.

The contest will be open until April 15 when a panel of judges will make choose the winners. The top two entries will win Hays Chamber Cheques.

They will also host the student art contest.

"This is another thing we have adapted to be online," Kolacny said.

That contest is open to any grades K-12 and will be open to illustrations that interpret their summer reading theme of "Imagine Your Story."

Entries for that contest are also due on April 15 and can be emailed to hray@hayslibrary.org or mailed to the library.

While the precautions are in place, Kolacny said there is no need to return any materials to the library, which is asking for everyone to keep items at home until conditions change.

She said if anyone receives a notice about an overdue item, not to worry, it is only because of the automated system.

"If that happens, just let us know," Kolacny said.&nbsp;"We can fix it after it happens."

The top two entries will win Hays Chamber Cheques.</p><p><a href="https://www.facebook.com/hayspubliclibrary/">Winners will be announced on the library's Facebook page on April 17.</a></p><p>They will also host the student art contest.</p><p>"This is another thing we have adapted to be online," Kolacny said.</p><p>That contest is open to any grades K-12 and will be open to illustrations that interpret their summer reading theme of "Imagine Your Story."</p><p>Entries for that contest are also due on April 15 and can be emailed to hray@hayslibrary.org or mailed to the library.</p><p>While the precautions are in place, Kolacny said there is no need to return any materials to the library, which is asking for everyone to keep items at home until conditions change.</p><p>She said if anyone receives a notice about an overdue item, not to worry, it is only because of the automated system.</p><p>"If that happens, just let us know," Kolacny said.&nbsp;"We can fix it after it happens."</p><p>The library staff can be reached at admin@hayslibrary.org or call (785) 625-9014 and leave a message.</p>

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, R-Kan., said Thursday COVID-19 economic stimulus checks will be begin going out today, as government officials on the state and national level discuss additional assistance for businesses and individuals.&nbsp;

"The first set of checks will be deposited today," Moran said. "At the base level, Americans who earn less than $75,000 a year will get a $1,200 check."

"At the base level, Americans who earn less than $75,000 a year will get a $1,200 check."</p><p>He said the program is just getting started, and not everyone will receive the money on the first day, but disbursement will begin with people that have completed their 2018 and 2019 tax returns and have direct deposit information on file at the Internal Revenue Service.</p><p>"That's a start to help to tide over and help out people," Moran said.</p><p>SBA guaranteed loans are also being processed in an effort to assist businesses continue paying staff. Many of those loans he said will be forgiven if certain criteria are met.</p><p>"While the legislation we passed includes things I normally wouldn't be for, and this is a lot more government than I am historically willing to vote for and spends a lot more money than I&nbsp; would want us to spend and this is something that we can't continue to do, " Moran said, "these are serious times. Through no fault of their own people are finding themselves in pretty difficult circumstances."</p><p>He also said he hopes to see continued bipartisan measures to assist Americans, even though the legislation may not be perfect.</p><p>Moran also said he understands the push-back from some concerning stay-at-home measures, but said saving lives is paramount.</p><p>"I know Kansans. I am one of them. I have the same attitude that I don't want anyone telling me what to do, Moran siad.</p><p>"We certainly see the consequences of how our lives have changed by this stay-at-home order, by the social distancing and all of the steps we are trying to take," Moran said, "but I would say it is important to follow that procedure."</p><p>The number of people infected, and have died are not just numbers, Moran said, they are people.</p><p>He also warned that the peak infections in Kansas are not expected until April.</p><p>"I would certainly prefer to overreact, rather than explain to someone who has lost a loved one, why we didn't take the necessary steps," Moran said.</p><p>He said he is pushing for a COVID-19&nbsp; vaccine to be developed as quickly as possible and wants expanded testing to get people back to work and living more normal lives faster.</p><p>"This has to be something that we have to react to appropriately to get it to come to an end sooner rather than later," Moran said. </p><p>Continuing to flatten the curve, with social distancing will allow the opportunity to help the health care sector get caught up with needed equipment and protective equipment, he said. More testing facilities are coming online more kits are being produced and sent out, he said.</p><p>"Our goal is to make sure anybody that wants to be tested can be tested by the end of summer," Moran said.</p><p>Expanded testing, he said, will ensure schools can be open next fall.</p>
