The co-founder of the Hays Community Theatre will make her playwriting debut Valentine's weekend with the murder mystery, "My Deadly Valentine."

Cheryl Glassman,63, wrote the two-act, comedy especially for the HCT's annual Valentine's weekend performances.

"I have been wanting to write something," she said. "I loved English and poetry and writing in high school. I have always wanted to write something."

When she couldn't find just the right script for the February show, her daughter encouraged her to write the play herself.

Glassman said she drew inspiration from her own life and many characters she has met over the years.

🎤Post Podcast: HCT to present 'My Deadly Valentine' this weekend

Fort Hays State University continues to monitor the 2019 Novel Coronavirus outbreak, but as rumors continue to spread about possible infections, university officials are reminding the public that the danger of the virus locally is low, and like other communicable diseases can be even lower when preventative measures are taken.

"As a university, one of our concerns is taking care of our students and taking care of our staff," said Lynn Adams, director of student health.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5e309c057d7daa72b30ebf35">With the outbreak beginning to becoming to become internationally noticed just before the beginning of the semester they shared guidance with students and staff.</a>

"We wanted to share the information they needed, not rumors, not exaggerations, but specific information on what a person needs to know about this virus," Adams said.

The Centers for Disease Control said the risk to anyone in the U.S. remains low.

But as a precaution, they shared information with the university community on prevention and how to proceed if they become ill.

"One of the most important things you can do is keeping your hands clean," Adams said.

That includes good and proper handwashing whenever possible, and the use of sanitizer when handwashing is not available, he said.

While there are reasons to remain watchful of the outbreak, Adams said it is important to keep the outbreak in perspective to other communicable diseases.

"It is important to recognize our risk here is low," Adams said.

The CDC estimates there have been as many as 31 million flu cases in the U.S. with as high as 30,000 deaths since October.

<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/cases-in-us.html">In reporting Friday, the CDC listed only 12 cases of Coronavirus that have been confirmed in the U.S., with 100 more under investigation.</a>

But as rumors continue in the area about potential cases, Adams said Wednesday he contacted the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to confirm there are no suspected cases in Kansas.

The virus is responsible for around 560 deaths in China, he said, with most victims being older with other underlying illnesses.

"So the lethality of this virus is relatively low," Adams said. "Certainly when compared to other Coronaviruses such as SARS and MERS, which made the headlines in years past."<br>

However, as a precaution, the university has imposed a travel ban to China, similar to other state universities and the U.S. State Department.

The travel ban was announced to university faculty Thursday in an email.

"Effective immediately, and until further notice, Fort Hays State University is restricting all travel to China.&nbsp;The restriction applies to all university faculty, staff, and students. No institution-related travel to China will be authorized or approved by the university, and we will defer any upcoming travel to China," the announcement said.

Scott Cason, FHSU chief communications officer, said the announcement only applied to official university travel, as faculty members who teach in China were already responsible for their own travel arrangements and would be subject to the U.S. travel restrictions.

The U.S. policy would apply to student travel as well.

"Our faculty who work in China face unique travel and destination challenges as this health crisis continues to evolve," the announcement said. "FHSU faculty serving in China are exempt from this policy, as we continue to work closely to identify potential short-term and longer-term solutions."

Cason noted the closest FHSU partner school is 450 miles away from the Wuhan province — where the outbreak began and remains the most prevalent.

On Jan. 1, the Hays Public Library started an automatic renewal system, giving patrons an easier way to extend their checkouts.

The new program is in effect for materials checked out from the library after Jan. 1, said HPL Communications Coordinator Callie Kolacny.

"Anything checked out after that date will automatically renew on the due date," she said.

There are however two caveats to the program that would require the item to be returned on or before the due date.

"If you have already renewed the item the maximum number of times or somebody else has put the item on hold ... then you will have to return it," Kolacny said.

Otherwise, the item will be extended for another check-out period.

Notifications will be sent to let the patron know the item has been automatically renewed or if it needs to be returned to the library.

"We don't have late fines and so it won't hurt you if you don't then get it returned until the next day," Kolacny said.

The new feature will work in conjunction with the online renewal that was already in place.

"You can renew things online, so you don't have to come to the library, but still sometimes people forget about it, or they have so many other things going on," she said. "Now it will just automatically renew."&nbsp;

The renewal system applies to all media checked out from the library.

"It's books, it's movies, it's music," Kolacny said. "And it will renew for the same amount of time that you originally would have it."

Notifications will still be sent a couple of days before the due date, via email, and the new auto-renewal alerts will come via email as well.

The new system will not change the current policy on items that are not returned. Items that have not been returned significantly after their due date will be classified as a lost item and after $50 in lost items on an account, the user will no longer be allowed to check out materials.

"We work on tax dollars so we need to be able to replace those items," Kolacny said. "It takes a while to get $50 worth of lost items and so it hasn't really become a big issue."

"And it will renew for the same amount of time that you originally would have it."</p><p>Notifications will still be sent a couple of days before the due date, via email, and the new auto-renewal alerts will come via email as well.</p><p>The new system will not change the current policy on items that are not returned. Items that have not been returned significantly after their due date will be classified as a lost item and after $50 in lost items on an account, the user will no longer be allowed to check out materials.</p><p>"We work on tax dollars so we need to be able to replace those items," Kolacny said. "It takes a while to get $50 worth of lost items and so it hasn't really become a big issue."</p>

🎤Post Podcast: HACC adapting to new business landscape

Staff, volunteers and the board of directors from the Humane Society of the High Plains,&nbsp;2050 East US Highway 40, this week are finalizing preparations for their largest fundraiser of the year, the 23rd annual "Soup 'R Bowl," on Jan. 26 at the Ellis County Fairgrounds.

"We have pretty much everything set up," said Betty Hansen, manager of the Virginia Miller Animal Shelter. "We have a really great number of volunteers this year and our board of directors has been working really hard."

"It's fun for our staff, it's fun for our board of directors, it's fun for the volunteers that help us," she said. "It's just a fun day."

Four more chefs have signed up for this year's event, for a total of 17, which Hansen said is "more than usual," but continues the trend of a larger event every year.&nbsp;

A few years ago the event had become so large they had to expand.

"This year, again, we will be using both buildings, the Shank and the Unrein," Hansen said.

Attendees of the event will also have the opportunity to visit vendor booths, win door prizes and enter a raffle.

"It's always a great event, we always have lots of people come out," Hansen said. "It's a great social event."

"There will be a lot of tables if you want to sit and eat," or you can wander around and visit, she said.

One of the more popular items at the event is a large dessert table.

"The last couple of years we have had a huge dessert table, that keeps getting bigger every year," Hansen said. "It's just about anything you can think of is going to be on the dessert table."

While the event is designed to be fun for the community, it also serves a purpose for the society.

"It's the biggest fundraiser that we have every year — and it just keeps getting bigger," Hansen said.&nbsp;"When we do a fundraiser, those funds go directly to the animals." 

Specifically, the proceeds go toward a medical fund for animals at the shelter.

And Hansen also said attendees need not worry about missing the other "bowl."

"It's a week before the actual game, so you don't have to worry about that," she said.

The event is set to kick off at 11 1.m. and run until 1 p.m. on Jan. 26 at the Ellis County Fairgrounds.

"We are pumped and almost ready to go," Hansen said.

Tickets are available at the shelter, Cerv's locations, all three Hays veterinarians and PetSense, Barkly Suites and Fur is Flying for $7 prior to the event and $8 at the door.
