🎤Post Podcast: Business struggling because of COVID-19? Here's what to do

Change is almost always stressful and, with Fort Hays State University students asked to quickly adapt to the transition to online courses and many moving off campus for the rest of the academic year, the university has developed a network faculty staff and fellow students to ease the difficulties many students are facing.

The care teams initiative is being spearheaded by Taylor Kriley, assistant vice president for student affairs and student engagement.

Over the next two weeks, a group of around 75 faculty, staff and student leaders will make nearly 10,000 phone calls to students to check in on students and asses their personal and scholastic needs as the semester continues.

"We want to see how they are doing during this somewhat challenging time," Kriley said. "We wanted to jump in right away and show the true tiger spirit of care because that is one of the best things we can do right now, is just care for one another."

The teams are all serving on a volunteer basis.

"It's really exciting that we have everyone joining together rising to this occasion to lend a hand to all of our students that are transition in whatever situation they are in," Kriley said.

The teams will work to address student safety and security concerns, share insight on academic support and help students to figure out what comes next, she said.

"We are really trying to be creative in the way we are tracking student success," Kriley said. "There will come a time when we reach tomorrow with COVID-19 and when we do we want to make sure our students are successful and ready to go."&nbsp;

The teams will have different areas of focus group of students, based on their classification, location and modality of learning with support for upcoming graduates to help them transition to the job market.&nbsp;

The program will also help locate local resources for students that are no longer able to use support programs on campus, while the Kelly Center will continue to work with students in need remotely.&nbsp;

"As our care team follows up with students if we identify a student that could use a call from our counseling team we definitely connect them with the counseling center to get the support they need," Kriley said.

"It warms your heart in a time like this to be able to see our community come together and provide support," Kriley said.

As Kansas went under a statewide stay at home order Monday Ellis County Health Services Director Jason Kennedy said the county has yet to have a confirmed case of the virus, but keeping it that way will be up to everyone doing their part.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5e7fed84afae0f4d5f5e6e07">"I would encourage everyone to read the executive order," Kennedy said, noting there is a lot of important information contained in it.</a>

Also important, he said is understanding the order's intent of limiting all activities outside of the home.

Kennedy said if the activity is necessary for the well being of yourself or your family, it is generally permitted — but, outside of those activities, it should be avoided.

"The social distancing piece is still extremely important," he said.

He also said the order should also not replace other best practices, like good handwashing, maintaining social distancing and practicing good cleaning practices.

"The virus is spread person to person, so that's really the key piece that we need to understand," he said.&nbsp;"The more that we can break those bonds, the more that we can separate and socially distance ourselves the faster we can either slow or control the spread to some degree."

The action by the governor, he said, is just another step to reinforce the social distancing and stop the spread.

Kennedy said testing for the virus on the individual level has been a hot topic across the U.S., but is only one piece of tracking and stopping the spread of the virus.

By using testing when needed and by using sampling, officials can understand where the virus is and what measures can be used to contain it.

In Ellis County, Kennedy said, every test for COVID-19 has been negative, but testing is generally reserved for someone who is symptomatic and has traveled to an area with a confirmed outbreak.

And those people would be tested by the primary care physician, not the health department.

"We know for a fact that anyone that has been sampled or tested in Ellis County as of (Monday) has come back negative for COVID-19," Kennedy said.

Kennedy said his department only tests first responders, and those tests are sent directly to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment lab.

Early in the week, he said, there was some confusion with the KDHE when they changed their testing criteria.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5e6a74abafae0f4d5f5cd975">The guidance from the department was to put a priority on testing for high-risk populations and health care workers, but that did not mean that testing was limited to only those groups, Kennedy said.</a>

He did not know precisely how many tests are available the county, as those are managed by the physicians themselves, but said private labs in Hays were going to begin testing locally as directed by physicians.

He also said it should not be assumed that the virus is in Ellis County just because some have been ill, but have not been tested directly for COVID-19. He said continuing to take recommended precautions could ensure COVID-19 does not make it to Ellis County.

"The most important thing right now, if we want to keep it out of our community, is to avoid any unnecessary travel outside of Ellis County. Period," Kennedy said.<br>

If that travel is required, limiting social interaction is important.

"If we say we have to do (social distancing) inside our county, we definitely have to do it outside of our county," Kennedy said.

Right now, he said, the most effective thing is for everyone to act like they have the virus and act accordingly.

Anyone with any of the symptoms should stay home, contact their primary care physician and follow their recommendations, Kennedy said.

"It doesn't matter at this point if is the flu or a cold. If you don't feel well, stay home, isolate yourself," Kennedy said. "That's the key piece."

Taking the recommended actions will not only help protect yourself but also others in the community.

"We have a large portion of at-risk population in our community," Kenedy said. "We want to do everything we can to protect them.

"To date, we have taken every step that is advised to flatten the curve, to protect vital infrastructure and to protect the at-risk population," he added. "Now it is up to the individual."

🎤Post Podcast: Hays leaders share COVID-19 information

After all school buildings in Kansas were closed unexpectedly in response to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, many parents and teachers had questions about how the year would proceed.

While plans continue to be finalized for USD 489 elementary schools, Lincoln Elementary principal Kerri Lacy said the most important thing right now is to understand that everyone is working to make sure the student's educational experience will be the best it can be under the circumstances and parents should not feel pressured to launch into learning programs with their children.

"It is uncharted waters for sure," Lacy said. "Our staff, our teachers, as well as our parents and aides are working really hard to find out what is best for your student as far as keeping their educational experiences going through all of this."

This week was spring break on the school calendar, and she said the teachers were asked to take it, but will be in full swing Monday to begin working with students and parents to make sure families&nbsp;are feeling supported and getting what they need.

"If you haven't heard from your student's teacher, don't worry. You will in the very near future," Lacy said.

<a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5e7a77d3afae0f4d5f5e0c72">While Hays High has already released a learning plan for the rest of the year,</a>&nbsp;Lacy said for elementary schools each teacher will coordinate the individual student learning but some elements will go across the classes.

In the elementary schools, Seesaw — a tool already used by many teachers — will continue to be utilized for home-based learning.

"We don't know exactly what that will look like, it may be different for every classroom," Lacy said.

The online group video chat platform Zoom will be used by the students and parents.

"Zoom has become my best friend in the last couple of weeks," Lacy said.

Zoom will help bridge the imposed physical distance for students, she said, and can be used for learning and for social activities, like group homework sessions or even just to have social interactions.

"It's a fun way to move through this process," Lacy said.

The imposed distancing is not just difficult on the students, she said. Teachers are also feeling the stress caused by being pulled away from their students so suddenly.

"I don't know if parents and families really understand the impact this is having on our teachers and our staff," Lacy said. "We need people in our lives, we need our little ones. We thrive on those hugs, we thrive on those smiles and, right now, we are all feeling a little bit lonely."

Meanwhile, Lacy said while the rest of the year will be significantly different than ever before, parents should not feel pressured to spend their days teaching their children.

"Don't worry," she said. "USD 489 is working hard to make it an easy transition."

She also recommends not getting overwhelmed by online services promoting teaching tools.

"Don't worry about that. You don't have to click on those. You don't have to make sure that your children are spending that screen time right now," she said. "Your student's teachers are going to give you everything you need."

This is a good time for parents to get creative with their children and look around for educational opportunities that present themselves all around.

"Educational opportunities look different, and they are going to look different," Lacy said.

She suggested getting outside and talking about things outside can be wrapped into learning, noting parents should not push their children into a full day in front of a computer working on learning.

"Think about your child's day at school. They are not sitting at a desk for eight hours," Lacy said, adding students participate daily in music, art, library, recess and play-based learning.

Lacy said overall, if elementary students work on reading and math facts, they should stay on track for next year.

You will in the very near future," Lacy said.</p><p><a href="https://hayspost.com/posts/5e7a77d3afae0f4d5f5e0c72">While Hays High has already released a learning plan for the rest of the year,</a>&nbsp;Lacy said for elementary schools each teacher will coordinate the individual student learning but some elements will go across the classes.</p><p>In the elementary schools, Seesaw — a tool already used by many teachers — will continue to be utilized for home-based learning.</p><p>"We don't know exactly what that will look like, it may be different for every classroom," Lacy said.</p><p>The online group video chat platform Zoom will be used by the students and parents.</p><p>"Zoom has become my best friend in the last couple of weeks," Lacy said.</p><p>Zoom will help bridge the imposed physical distance for students, she said, and can be used for learning and for social activities, like group homework sessions or even just to have social interactions.</p><p>"It's a fun way to move through this process," Lacy said.</p><p>The imposed distancing is not just difficult on the students, she said. Teachers are also feeling the stress caused by being pulled away from their students so suddenly.</p><p>"I don't know if parents and families really understand the impact this is having on our teachers and our staff," Lacy said. "We need people in our lives, we need our little ones. We thrive on those hugs, we thrive on those smiles and, right now, we are all feeling a little bit lonely."</p><p>Meanwhile, Lacy said while the rest of the year will be significantly different than ever before, parents should not feel pressured to spend their days teaching their children.</p><p>"Don't worry," she said. "USD 489 is working hard to make it an easy transition."</p><p>She also recommends not getting overwhelmed by online services promoting teaching tools.</p><p>"Don't worry about that. You don't have to click on those. You don't have to make sure that your children are spending that screen time right now," she said. "Your student's teachers are going to give you everything you need."</p><p>This is a good time for parents to get creative with their children and look around for educational opportunities that present themselves all around.</p><p>"Educational opportunities look different, and they are going to look different," Lacy said.</p><p>She suggested getting outside and talking about things outside can be wrapped into learning, noting parents should not push their children into a full day in front of a computer working on learning.</p><p>"Think about your child's day at school. They are not sitting at a desk for eight hours," Lacy said, adding students participate daily in music, art, library, recess and play-based learning.</p><p>Lacy said overall, if elementary students work on reading and math facts, they should stay on track for next year.</p>

"We've been working with some of our partnering agencies and get some lists put together for what business are doing," said Sarah Wasinger, Hays chamber president and CEO.

One of the earliest lists compiled by the chamber is the current status of the local restaurants.&nbsp;

"We are updating resources as they become available," Wasinger said.

The chamber has also compiled a list of current banking services.

"During times of need like these people want to make sure that they know how to access their finances properly and efficiently," Wasinger said.

She noted several banks in the area are offering lobby hours by appointment.

"We will be sharing that information as we get it," she said.

They are also working on a list for retailers as they offer different services in response to the outbreak.

"Our goal is to be out there advocating for all of our chamber members and it doesn't matter if that local traditional or non-traditional," Wasinger said.

Wasinger hopes that as the precautions continue that more businesses and residents will use their services.

"Its more important now than ever that our businesses know that they can reach out to the chamber," she said. "We are here as a resource, for not only for our business but the community at large and whatever it takes, we will think outside of the box and if you can dream it and if you think the chamber can help we want to hear that information and we will be there to share it."

While they are working to support businesses, they also are encouraging everyone to work together in the community to make the best of a challenging situation and has seen many already step up to assist others.

"If you have a way to do something nice, and brighten someone's day," Wasinger said.&nbsp;"I think we could all use a little extra love and happiness right now."

"The best thing that we can do is pull together as a community and be there for one another," she said. "Know that if you need help, don't be quiet. We don't want people to suffer in silence."

"We have been working on the concept of having health insurance for our member investors for quite a while now," said Sarah Wasinger, president and CEO Hays Chamber.

An email was sent Monday to solicit feedback on the program.

"We are definitely wanting feedback," Wasinger said as a committee continues to explore the potential of the program.

So far, estimated costs have been compiled based on what other chambers are offering.

"We are really hoping our members will look at that information, see if those plans are affordable and convenient for them," Wasinger said.

The biggest question so far, she said, is who the provider would be.

"That is still to be decided," Wasinger said. "We are working with a third-party vendor called Heartland Benefits Group. They are going to managing this benefit plan for us."

The group will put together quotes as the process moves forward, but by combining together, she said businesses may be able to offer insurance at a lower cost than if they do so alone.

"So health care, obviously, is a big expense for businesses and one of the best ways we can impact all of our investors who have that need for affordable insurance is to pool our resources together," Wasinger said.

The more in the pool and the higher participation the more likely the insurance cost will be lower, she said.

"More details will be coming," Wasinger offered as feedback comes in and more specific costs are outlined with insurance providers.
