Roy Irvin Jacobs passed away unexpectedly at his home on Nov. 15, 2023, in McCook due to a massive heart attack. Roy’s wish for his end of life was that he died quickly, was happy, and was not alone. God granted him his wishes. He was happy in the moments before his death and was with his girlfriend Sharla.

Roy was born on Nov. 10, 1960, in Hays, to Irvin and Verna (Gross) Jacobs. He was the middle child of nine! He attended school in Hays and graduated from Hays High School in 1979. Roy served his country honorably in the U.S. Army from 1985-1989. He was an expert marksman with the M-16 rifle and in the grenade. He spent most of his service time in Germany and had many interesting tales to tell from his time in uniform.

Roy married Eileen Schumacher and to this union his only daughter, Jenna, was born. He later married Jana (Balthazor) Guthrie.&nbsp;

Roy worked many different jobs in his life. He was in the oilfields, and he also had years of experience in construction. Roy spent most of his work life, though, behind the wheel of a semi, owning and operating J&amp;S Trucking out of Phillipsburg, for 20 years. He resided in Kansas and Nebraska but was able to feed his adventurous spirit with 18 wheels. 

Adaptability and resilience were two of his many strengths. Punctuality, reliability, and taking good care of things are traits Roy not only valued on the job but honored with loved ones as well. He was most recently employed as a truck driver with Frenchman Valley Coop in McCook, Neb. He had wanted a change in life and the chance to be home every night.&nbsp; He appreciated how stress-free it allowed him to be.

Roy’s idea of heaven was fresh air, sunshine and sometimes the joy of sitting by a firepit. He was an outdoorsman at heart. Roy enjoyed country cruising and offroad adventures. He loved being on the water, boating, fishing or floating down the river and just lounging in a stock tank.

Roy was a devoted father and stepfather. He was known for his generous spirit and was always ready to lend a helping hand. Recently, he donated his time and skills to the Habitat for Humanity house in McCook.&nbsp; Notable for his goofy sense of humor and a soft spot for kids, Roy had no problem becoming a big kid himself to entertain the little ones. He had a knack for most anything hands on, whether it be under the hood of any vehicle or renovations at home, he was a natural. He leaves behind a legacy of love and will be deeply missed by family, friends and coworkers.&nbsp;

Roy was preceded in death by his grandparents, George and Anna (Dome) Jacobs and Alois and Cecelia (Leiker) Gross; parents, Irvin and Verna (Gross) Jacobs; stepmother, Carolyn (Dinkel) Jacobs; wife, Jana Jacobs; sister, Carla (Jacobs) Messmore and brother, Vern Jacobs.&nbsp;

Survivors include his beloved girlfriend, Sharla Trosper; daughter, Jenna Jacobs (Dylan Cobb), Jeremy and Alicia Norton, Jasen and Tanya Guthrie, Shelby Hudson, and Haley Hudson; grandchildren: Adrianna Cobb, Kendry Cobb, Vincent Cobb, Taylor Norton, Olivia Norton, Kennedie Norton, Jakob Norton, and Mason Hudson; great-grandchildren: Paxton and Ryftin; siblings, Neal and Judy Jacobs, Doyle Jacobs, Gary Jacobs, Marvin and Debra (Jacobs) Roth, Bryan and Dora (Jacobs) Gauntt, and David and Jenny (Jacobs) Arndt, stepbrothers, Lee Dinkel and wife Danna and Jeff Dinkel and wife Marcia.

Cremation was chosen, and a celebration of life service is being planned for January 2024 with burial to follow in the Cambridge Cemetery, Cambridge, Neb.

Geraldine Rita (Plante) Klein passed away on Nov. 22, 2023, at her home in Damar, at the age of 76. She was born on Aug. 23, 1947, to Edward Joseph and Adele Rosalie (Senesac) Plante in Hays.

Geraldine attended grade school and three years of high school in Damar and then graduated from Palco High School in 1968. She worked at Buck Grill in Hill City from 1969 to 1980 as a cook.

She then moved back to Palco to help take care of her father, who was ill and worked for Pat and Robert Kern from 1980 to 1983. On June 4, 1983, Geraldine married Henry Klein.

Geraldine and Henry were foster parents for several years and babysat for others. After Henry passed away in 2000, Geraldine continued to babysit and loved being with people and kids. She made the best iced tea, was a parent to many, and fed a lot of the Palco kids over the years. Always ready for a conversation, she would always say, “Tell me what you know. I know nothing. What’s new?”

Geraldine was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Damar.

She is survived by a host of cousins; and special families, Brandon and Lindsey Hamel and kids, Rylan, Weston, and Layton of Plainville and Butch and Traci Hamel and kids, Kendrix and Ryker of Hays.

Preceding Geraldine in death are her parents; husband, Henry Klein; brother, George Plante; and special family friend, Averyn Hamel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2023, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Damar with inurnment following in the church cemetery.

JoAnn J. (Dietz) Kilian, 75, of Russell, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2023, at the Russell Regional Hospital.

JoAnn was born Feb. 27, 1948, in Russell. She was the daughter of Jacob and Freda (Batt) Dietz. She lived her whole life in Russell. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Bender Hill Lutheran Church, later became a member of St. John Lutheran Church. She attended Lincoln Grade School in the Milberger area, graduated from Russell High School and attended Fort Hays State University.

JoAnn was united in marriage to Gary L. Kilian on Nov. 22, 1969, in Russell.&nbsp; This union was blessed with two children, Kristi and Kory.

JoAnn worked at the Home State Bank for many years, the Russell Livestock and Back To Nature in Hays. She farmed and had a cow-calf operation with her son Kory. She also cleaned homes in the Russell area for over 40 years. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday school and Bible study when her children were young.&nbsp; Later she was active in the Church Altar Guild. She enjoyed cooking for family and friends. Her greatest pride and joy were her children and grandchildren. One of her favorite phrases was, “take one day at a time” whenever life presented a challenge.

JoAnn’s surviving family includes her daughter, Kristi Brungardt (Chris) of Russell; son, Kory Kilian of Russell; and three grandchildren, Kaitlyn Nicole Noble (Marc), Grace Kilian and Ryan Kilian.

JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents.

Celebration of JoAnn’s Life will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 8 at St. John Lutheran Church. Burial of ashes will follow at the Russell City Cemetery.&nbsp; 

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, with the family present to greet friends from 6 to 7 p.m.&nbsp; A memorial has been established with St. John Lutheran Church.

She was born Nov. 18, 1960, in Lincoln, Kan., to Bill Gene and Eldora Marie (Deneke) Cole.&nbsp; She married Andrew “Andy” Greene on May 14, 1983, in Lincoln.

She and her husband owned and operated Greene’s Upholstery. She was a seamstress and would work on car seats, car tops, interiors, furniture, covers and anything else that could be sewed. &nbsp;

Maxine was a 1978 graduate of Lincoln High School, attended Kansas State University and moved to Hays in 1984. She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, convertibles, reading and her family.&nbsp;

She is survived by her husband, Andy Greene, of the home; her daughter, Marci Greene, Colorado Springs, Colo.; her brothers and sister, Jim Cole and his wife, Paula, Greenville, Wis.; Ken Cole And wife, Jaynell, Russell; Don Cole and wife, Jan, Wilmar, Minn.; Bob Cole and wife, Kim, Andale; Jo Ann Mote and her husband, Tracy, Weskan; Dave Cole and wife, Sharon, Norfolk, United Kingdom; her mother-in-law, Edoline Jane Greene, Scottsdale, Ariz.; her nieces and nephews; her great-nieces and great-nephews; and her little four-legged friend, Walker.

Maxine Marie Greene

Merle Raymond McLaren,94, of Hays, passed away Monday, Nov. 27, 2023, in Hays. He was born Dec. 23, 1928, in Chicago, Ill., to David and Blanche (Beique) McLaren.

On Jan. 16, 1954, he married Betty Lou Schemm in Wichita. They celebrated 67 years together before her passing on Oct. 14, 2021. Merle left school at 16 years old to help take care of the family after his dad passed but did continue his education later in life ending with a bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays State University.

He later joined the U.S. Air Force and retired after 23 years of service to his country. His service included both Korea and Vietnam in which he received numerous accommodations, including a Bronze Star.

He owned McLaren Lincoln-Mercury-GMC in Hays for 18 years and was one of the original business owners to push for expansion north of I-70. Merle was a member of the Hays VFW and an active member of the Honor Guard. He received a Quilt of Valor. He was chosen as Hays All-American Citizen in 2018, but his greatest joy was family and taking care of his grandkids.

Betty L. (Schemm) McLaren, 87, of Hays, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021, at Hays Medical Center, Hays. She was born March 21, 1934, in WaKeeney, the daughter of Joseph and Eva (Schwien) Schemm. Betty was a homemaker and a selfless mother. Her primary concern in life was always the welfare of her family.

She loved people in general and doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a graduate of Trego High School, WaKeeney. Her husband, Merle, was a career member of the USAF, and together with their growing family traveled to many areas of the free world.

Survivors include their children, Terrence K. McLaren and wife, Carla, Cape Coral, Fla.; Laurie A. Johnson and husband, Kris, Hawaii; Debra A. McLaren, Hays; Erin P. Filbert, Ness City; Nita M. Tan and husband Mark, Moore, Okla.; Daniel J. McLaren and wife, Lisa, Hays; Michael J. McLaren and wife, Arlena, Baldwin City; Eva M. Parrott and husband. Richard, Hays; 13 grandchildren, Celisa Smith, Wichita; Christopher Johnson and wife, Stephanie, Ellis; Krina Filbert, Ness City; Leah Rodriguez and husband, Hector, Ness City; Kristen Karst and husband, T.J., Hays; Emma McLaren, Knoxville, Tenn.; Jillian McLaren, Baldwin City; Josselyn Dunagan and husband, Colby, Scott City; Jaelyn McLaren and wife, Emily, Little Elm, Texas; Jessie McLaren, Fort Collins. Betty was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Schemm. Together Merle and Betty were preceded in death by two sons, Sean, and Joel; a daughter, Keri; a grandchild, Desirae and a son-in-law Myron Filbert. A combined celebration of life service for Merle and Betty will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023, with memorial visitation from 1:30 until service time at Keithley Funeral Homes and Crematory-Brock's Chapel 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601.

Betty was a homemaker and a selfless mother. Her primary concern in life was always the welfare of her family.She loved people in general and doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a graduate of Trego High School, WaKeeney. Her husband, Merle, was a career member of the USAF, and together with their growing family traveled to many areas of the free world.Survivors include their children, Terrence K. Leanna (Tindall) Linden, loving mother, grandmother and devoted friend to many, passed away peacefully on Nov. 25, 2023, at 86.

She was born Nov. 10, 1937, in Ransom, the elder daughter of Eldon and Irene (McKenzie) Marcy. Early in her life, her family moved from a Trego County farm to a farm near Selkirk in Wichita County.

She was active in 4-H throughout her youth. She was very proud that she had raised, then shown at the Kansas State Fair, a hog that won overall State Grand Champion. She attended high school in Leoti, graduating in 1955, then graduated from The Dominican School of Nursing, in Great Bend, becoming a registered nurse in 1958.

Her love of nursing and helping others carried her through her 45-year career, most of which was spent at Lane County Hospital, in Dighton. She came to Dighton in 1972 with her husband, Bill Tindall, and son, Randy Tindall. She provided Lane County residents loving care for almost 30 years, including doing double-duty for about 10 years as the USD 482 school nurse.

She was honored to be elected to serve for several years on Dighton’s City Council. She loved her community and the people who made Dighton a wonderful place to live. Bill passed in 1980, She later married Arnold Linden, and they had many good years together.

Leanna enjoyed bowling, bingo, crochet, supper club and rooting for the Royals, Chiefs and Wildcats. In her younger adult years, she enjoyed traveling the world. She and Bill went on many trips, including tours of Europe, the Caribbean, and South America.

She was preceded in death by Bill and Arnold, and her only sibling, her sister, Aneth, who lived in Wichita.

She is survived by Randy, his wife, Renee, and four grandchildren; Kendall, Cassandra, Kallista and Ethan, all of whom live in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A celebration of life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 at Dighton’s Bible Fellowship Church, followed immediately by a graveside service at Dighton Cemetery, then lunch at the church. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at Boomhower Funeral Home.

Kayleen A. Haselhorst, age 73, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2023, at Redbud Village - Plainville.

Kayleen Haselhorst, lovingly known as Kay, passed away peacefully on Nov. 26, 2023, at Redbud Village, Plainville. She was born on Aug. 28, 1950, in Damar to her loving parents, Albert and Rosa Hamel.

Kay was surrounded by her family and priest in her final moments. Throughout her life, Kay found joy in various hobbies and interests. She loved spending time playing bingo, exploring auctions, indulging in home shopping adventures, and taking the time to primp and look her best. These activities brought her immense happiness and allowed her to connect with others who shared similar passions.

Kay leaves behind a legacy of love and fond memories. She is survived by her life partner, Danny Lamb. The two fell in love and worked and lived side by side for over 40 years. Danny stood alongside her in thick and thin and their bond was one filled with deep affection and unwavering support.

Kay was mother to Wendy Porembski and Dallas Haselhorst. She spoke of her children often and was proud of their successes. She loved them endlessly and treasured every moment spent with them. She leaves this world knowing that her love was special and that she deserved to be cherished.

She leaves behind six granddaughters: Lauren Benjamin, Carly Benjamin, Gianna Haselhorst, Aria Haselhorst, Ellia Haselhorst, and Ayla Haselhorst. She would have loved more time with them all. In her final months, she would constantly ask to look at pictures of them and want to talk for hours about the details of their lives and what they enjoyed doing.

She described her trips to radiation with Lauren as the thing that made her happiest. Kay was the youngest of eight children raised on the family farm. Her siblings: Albert Jr. Hamel and his wife Rosie who are both deceased, Betty McNabb who is deceased, Gene Hamel who died just a year ago and his wife Avis, Tina Bobek and her husband Bill who is deceased, Alvin Hamel, Ron Hamel and his wife Mary Lou who is deceased, and Dorothy Staab and her husband Bob. All her siblings were very important to her. Through good times and bad, they remained a loving family, offering unwavering support and strength to one another.&nbsp; They were her rock and foundation in the last few years as both her and Danny's health declined.

Almost as much as her family, Kay adored her fur babies: Keyma, Cookie, and Kitty; who all preceded her in death. They brought so much joy and love into her life that she called out for them during her final days. &nbsp;

The memory of Kayleen Haselhorst will forever remain in the hearts of all those who were fortunate enough to know her. Her warm smile, kind-hearted nature, and soft heart touched the lives of many. Although she is no longer with us, her legacy will continue to shine brightly through the memories we hold dear.

A Mass celebrating Kay's life will be on Dec. 9 at St Joseph Catholic Church in Damar. The service will begin at 10 a.m. to honor her memory. The church is at 107 Oak St., Damar, KS 67632. Joe Leonard Heskett, 70, of Colby, died Saturday Dec. 2, 2023, at Citizens Medical Center in Colby. He was born Dec. 10, 1952, in Hoxie to Leonard and Myrna (Dunning) Heskett.

Joe grew up on the family farm north of Studley until the family relocated to Oakley. Joe led the cross-country team to Oakley High School’s first ever state championship. He graduated from Oakley High School in 1971 and then attended Colby Community College.

Joe was united in marriage to Rosalee Maurath on Aug. 12, 1973, and recently celebrated their 50th anniversary together with family and friends. The young couple moved to Wichita, where he completed a bachelor's and master's degree in speech pathology from Wichita State University.

They then relocated to Tipton to accept the speech pathologist job for USD 272. It was here that they were blessed with two children, Bret and Kyla. Joe had many dear friends in Tipton where he lived and worked covering four schools for almost 30 years.

After retiring from the district, Joe purchased Hinkle, Termite &amp; Pest Control. Together with Rosalee they grew and expanded the business west and relocated to Colby. Joe retired a second time earlier this year when they sold the business to Kyla and Lucas Wiegert.

Joe was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed summers at his cabin in Colorado and winters in Arizona riding the many trails on his RZR. Joe never missed an opening day of pheasant season and enjoyed training and watching his hunting dogs work. He was the host and organizer of many epic adventures for his friends and family.

Joe was the proud grandfather of six grandkids. He found great joy in following along and attending their many activities. Joe was preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Myrna and brother James Earl.

He is survived by his wife Rosalee; son Bret (Adriana) Heskett of Topeka; daughter Kyla (Lucas) Wiegert of Colby; six grandchildren Emily, Palmer, Logan, and Easton Heskett; Brinley and Rogan Wiegert; sister Donna (Elmer) Schielke of Colby; brother Wayne (Lauren) Heskett of Wamego; sister Vicki (Joe) Halbleib of Cimarron; brother Paul (Jamie) Heskett of Oakley; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 5, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby with vigil at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Colby.

Dorthy Lynn Doonan, 74, died Nov. 26, 2023, in Salina. She was born July 2, 1949, in Elkins, W.V., the daughter of Arnold and Alice (Chewning) Hart. Dorothy graduated from Elkins High School in 1967.&nbsp;

On Sept. 6, 1969, she married Glen A. Doonan in Patuxent River, Md., He preceded her in death earlier this year on June 18.

A Hoisington resident since 1975, coming from Pratt and Great Bend, Dorthy was the Barton County Clerk of the District Court for 23 years, retiring in 2012. She enjoyed crocheting and bird watching and was known for the many wedding cakes she made. Family was the most central part of her life, and she loved spending time with them.

She is survived by her three children; Jeff Doonan and fiancé Loretta Smith of Hoisington, Lynn Andres and husband Merlyn of Solomon, and Wade Doonan and wife Sandy of Salina; six siblings, John Hart and wife Becky, Joe Hart and wife Kelly, David Hart and wife Kay, Debbie Gainer and husband Harold, Edward Hart, all of Elkins, W.V., and Steve Hart and wife Carol of Charles Town, W.V.; six grandchildren, Jacob Andres and wife Jennifer, Shauna Andres and fiancé Krys Lane, Alexis Miller and husband Conlan, Austin Doonan, Kacee Doonan, and Bryce Doonan; and a great-grandson, Benjamin Andres.

William Kevin 'Bill' Robb

Wilma A. (Munch) Wasinger-Drake, 93, died on Nov. 25, 2023, at Cedar Village, Ness City. She was born on the family farm Aug. 24, 1930, in the Nonchalanta Territory in Southwest Ness County. The daughter of Jacob and Lucy (Schoendaller) Munch, she was one of 13 children. Growing up on a farm, her job was milking the cows.

Wilma attended grade school at the Nonchalanta country school, and high school in Dighton, where she lived with her sister. She was on the basketball team, and this is where she met and later married her husband, Nick Wasinger, who was a referee at some games.

Faith was most important to her. She was a devout member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Ness City and a member of the Altar Society where she served on many committees and cooked for many funeral dinners as well as helped with the Fall Festival for many years.

Family played an important role in her life. She was mother and grandmother to eight children, 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. They were her pride and joy and she looked forward to their visits so she could play cards, dice, or board games with them. She instilled her love of baking and cooking in her children and grandchildren by teaching them all her little secret tricks.

The community was also an important part of Wilma’s life. &nbsp;She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She cooked and served, free of charge, many benefit dinners for the improvement and upkeep of the American Legion building. Wilma worked at the local café as a cook and later catered many, many weddings, reunions, anniversary parties and Co-op dinners. &nbsp;Everyone loved her fried chicken and roast beef.

Her hobbies included sewing, playing bingo, going to the casino, cards and dancing. She played the piano and played with a local band, Munsch and Rohr of Ness City. &nbsp;After Nick passed away, she later married Earl Drake.

She is survived by her children, Linda Denning (Bob), Hays, Lavonne Coker (Tom), Hays, Luciann Ogden (Johnny), Canon City, Colo., Layne and Alan Wasinger, Ness City.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Nick Wasinger and Earl Drake, sons, Kenneth, James, and Verlyn Wasinger, grandsons, Justin Cox and Tanner Mishler, and granddaughter Courie Cox.

Parish Vigil will be at&nbsp; 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28 at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29 at Sacred Heart Church, Ness City followed by burial in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be given to Sacred Heart Cemetery or Sacred Heart Church.

Wilma A. (Munch) Wasinger-Drake, 93, died on Nov. 25, 2023, at Cedar Village, Ness City. She was born on the family farm Aug. 24, 1930, in the Nonchalanta Territory in Southwest Ness County. The daughter of Jacob and Lucy (Schoendaller) Munch, she was one of 13 children. Growing up on a farm, her job was milking the cows.<figure>

Eulonda Darlene Dettmer Hagman, the third child of John Dietrich and Barbara Sophia (Miller) Dettmer, was born March 13, 1929, at the family home south of Kensington, and passed peacefully Nov. 23, 2021, at the Smith County Memorial Hospital with her family by her side.

Eulonda was baptized and confirmed into St John’s Lutheran Church, Kensington. She taught Sunday School, attended and held leadership roles in WELCA, and led her children and husband to faith.

Eulonda attended country school. She graduated from Kensington High School in 1946.

On September 1, 1946, Eulonda and Eugene Francis Hagman were married. She claimed to have not known how to cook when she was married. This is difficult for her family to believe as she was an excellent cook.

They moved several times in the ensuing years, living in Kensington, Claudell, and Phillipsburg. Eulonda worked various jobs helping Gene’s father, J.A. Hagman, on the farm and working in retail. Children, Eugene Francis (Junior) and Rodney Lee, were added to the family. After Rod’s birth, they moved to a farmstead south and west of Kensington in 1953, completing the family with Susan Gail.

In 1982 Gene and Eulonda moved to his family’s farm 4 miles south of Kensington. Eulonda was widowed in 1988 but enjoyed that home until 2003 when she moved to Kensington. In the spring 2022, she moved to Sunporch in Smith Center.

Eulonda worked, even when her children were young, eventually becoming a mainstay at the Kensington Co-op from which she retired in 1991. In her retirement, she continued part-time work for many years at St John’s Lutheran Church as the church secretary.

She was a supportive mother and grandmother, attending as many of their activities as possible. She was a tireless supporter of the town of Kensington. She enjoyed shopping, visiting and her flower garden.

Eulonda is survived by her children, Junior (Nancy) of Kensington, Rod (Anita) of Buhler, and Susie, Dave Hutson of Kensington; 10 grandchildren: Kate Hagman of Wichita, Elizabeth (Brandon) Maughan of Oklahoma City, Patricia (Craig) Betzold of Wichita, Alison (Jed) Stephen of Tonganoxie, Brandon (Emily) Hagman of Brimfield, Ill., Audra (Dale) Seeman of Larned, Becky (Josh) Kirchhoff of Gaylord, Jessica Goracke of Kensington, Annie Hutson Adams (Eddie) Gaylord, and Luke Hutson (Stephanie) Chanute, and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Eugene of 42 years, her parents, siblings and their spouses: Alvin (Blanche) Dettmer, Wilbur (Mildred) Dettmer) and LaVona (Melvin) Gruber.

Earl Bales, 96, of Osborne, passed away on Friday, Nov. 24, 2023, at the Osborne County Memorial Hospital.

Earl was born Dec. 12, 1926, in rural Alton, to Leo and Velma (Stull) Bales of Alton. He was the youngest of two children.

Earl graduated from Alton High School in 1944. He married Marjorie Cox in 1952, and to this union of 67 years, four children were born. Earl and Marjorie lived on their farm south of Alton until they moved to Osborne in their later years.

Earl was a faithful member of Mt. Ayr Friends Church of Alton.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Marjorie, his sister, Marjorie Johnston, and one granddaughter, Candice Gregory.

He is survived by daughters: Belinda Warner (Darrell) of Liebenthal; Vickie Drake of Alton; Donna Gregory (Virl) of Alton; and son, Larry Bales (Robin) of Osborne; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Jean Anne Terrell was born 20 minutes before her identical twin sister, Jo, on Aug. 9, 1938, to Eva (Stevens) Terrell and Bernec E. Terrell in Atwood.

Jean spent most of her childhood and school years in Caldwell. In 1953, the family moved to the Pleasant Valley area of Wichita. She completed her high school education at North High, graduating in 1956.

Jean then attended Wichita University in Wichita. Education was a very important part of her life. She wanted to major in math; however, women were not encouraged to enter this field during this era. She then switched to a music major and began teaching in Woodbine. While teaching, she completed her master's in music education at Wichita State University. Jean then moved to Lincoln, Kan., from 1962 to 1977 and taught vocal/instrumental music. Jean also taught music education for one year in Junction City.

In 1972, Jean joined a teachers' organization, (KAPPA KAPPA IOTA) She became very interested in this group and became its executive secretary in 1978, which called for a move to Tulsa, Okla. She enjoyed her work with this teachers' group and loved meeting teachers from all over. Jean traveled to all 50 states and several countries in Europe setting up conferences. She also served as Kansas president for three years. Jean was still an active member at age 85. She retired and moved back to help her parents during their later years.

Jean was also a member of P.E.O. Chapter GN in Wichita for 60 years.

She directed many vocal choirs and handbells and played contrabassoon, saxophone, flute, trumpet and piano in many churches in Tulsa and Wichita. She was an active member of the Seneney Music Band of Wichita. and loved to play her saxophone at concerts. Jean was a member of Hand Bell Musicians of America. She bowled weekly and golfed when she could. Jean was an active member of the 1st Presbyterian Church in Wichita. She loved being a greeter and never missed a Sunday.

Jean enjoyed many things in life, but one of her favorites, was her dog-daughters, Pollyanna and Mitzy. Her God Pals went with her everywhere. She would sit with at least one dog on her lap doing puzzle books and watching game shows on TV. Jean had a quick mind and a smile that would light up a room.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her twin sister; and her beloved dogs, Pollyanna and Mizty. She is survived by many cousins and friends.

Jean passed away at Wilson Care and Rehab Center in Wilson on Saturday, Nov. 25, 2023, at the age of 85. Jean will be laid to rest next to her sister and parents in Sumner Cemetery, Alton.

Cleona Alene Flipse, 84, of Colby, passed away Nov. 24, 2023, at Citizens Medical Center, Colby, after a brief battle with cancer. Cleona was born Nov. 5, 1939, in Wichita, to Albert P. and Leona E. (Noble) Coval.

Cleona grew up in Wichita, and previously lived in Dodge City, and Cimarron. before moving to Colby in 1967. Cleona was united in marriage to Bruce Flipse in July of 1975, combining and raising their “Brady Bunch” family of six children.

She attended college in Washburn for her Paralegal degree, finished her bachelor’s degree in Hays, and graduated from Washburn School of Law in 1988. After passing the bar exam on her first attempt, she joined her husband Bruce’s law practice in Colby and practiced primarily in the child-in-need-care field until she retired.

Cleona also served on the Board of Trustees of Colby Community College for 16 years. Cleona enjoyed spending time with and going on adventures with her family, going to car shows with Bruce, hosting at the holidays and cooking for her family, belonging to Phi Gamma club and collecting music boxes.

Cleona was preceded in death by her parents Albert P. and Leona E. (Noble) Coval; sister Irena Kinsington of Wichita; and brother Bobby Coval of Seattle, Wash.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years Bruce Flipse of Colby; half-sister Cleta Ledbetter of Wichita; half-sister Vita Lamb of Leon; daughter Toni Pulos of Salida, Colo.; daughter Conne (Bo) Brown of Victoria, Texas; son Jon (Amy) Horton of Parkville, Mo.; daughter Kelly (Jeff) Bunyea of Athens, Tenn.; son Brad (Vanessa) Flipse of Colby; son Brent (Gwen) Flipse of Prairie Village; 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

A memorial service will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023, at Baalmann Mortuary, Colby, with burial in Beulah Cemetery, Colby.

Birdie Mae Oden, 93, of Russell, died on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2023, at the Russell Regional Hospital.

Birdie was born on Oct. 11, 1930, in Marienthal, the daughter of Walter Edward and Ivry Lea (Harkness) Hall. She grew up in Sterling. Sylvia permanently moved to Stafford. The family moved to Stafford due to her father’s farming career.

She graduated from Stafford High School. After high school she attended the St. Elizabeth School of Nursing for one year. It was while she was attending nursing school she met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Walter J. Oden Jr.

They were married on Sept. 24, 1949, in Hutchinson. From this union, they were blessed with four children, daughters Connie Sue, Linda Ann and Stacey Lea, and a son Walter Bruce.

The family moved to Russell in 1952 where Birdie worked as a homemaker and was a devoted wife and mother. She was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Russell. She volunteered as a Girl Scout leader and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Birdie truly enjoyed the time she spent with friend Pat Stielow whether she was helping on their ranch or helping with the Otterbein Methodist Church Kid’s Club. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, being outdoors and being very involved with her kids' activities. Most of all she enjoyed spending time and taking care of her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving family includes her daughter Connie S. Brack and husband Leon of Iola; Linda A. Tittel of Wilson; son Walter Bruce Oden and wife Shelley of Russell; and daughter Stacey L. Frimmel and husband Troy of Wilson; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Walter on July 17, 2004; brothers John Hall, Henry H. Hall, Donald F. Hall; and sister Waunita MacMillan.

A celebration of Birdie’s life will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary. A private family burial will follow at the Russell City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, with the family present to greet friends from 6 to 7 p.m.

Memorials have been established with the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association. Contributions and condolences may be sent to Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

Mark E. Pfannenstiel, 63, of Hays passed away Friday, Nov. 24, 2023, at Hays Medical Center, Hays. He was born on June 2, 1960, to Melvin and Cora Lee (Schmidt) Pfannenstiel.

Mark graduated from TMP in 1978. While at TMP, he was in the concert and marching bands and the TMP Folk Chorus, which traveled all around the country. He entered the BA Music program at Fort Hays State University that fall and graduated in 1983. He then attended Rockhurst University for a year, before moving to Kansas City, Mo., where he would live until 2018 when he moved back to Hays.

You never knew when he would suddenly break into song! He was an avid Star Trek fan and loved sci-fi movies and TV shows of all kinds. Mark also had a wicked sense of humor, which all of the kids got from their dad! He loved bringing joy to people’s lives through laughter. He was a loyal friend and a kind and caring listener.Mark had a strong faith and was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hays.Mark is survived by his sister, Cindy Pfannenstiel, Brierley Hill, England.He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Cora Lee; his brother, Matthew; his grandparents, Casper and Georgine (Dreiling) Pfannenstiel; Alexius F. and Sybilla (Schmeidler) Schmidt.Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023, at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, 13th and Ash, Hays, with celebrant Father Rich Daise.
