Mitchel A. 'Mitch' Sommers, Victoria&nbsp;

Mitchel A. “Mitch” Sommers, age 64 of Victoria, Kansas,&nbsp;passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at the Catholic Care Center in Bel Aire, Kansas.

He was born February 5, 1959, in Topeka, Kansas to Donald A. and Irene (Peck) Sommers.

Mitch grew up in Delia and Victoria. He graduated from Victoria High School and Fort Hays State University. 

He taught school for a few years in Liberal then moved back to Ellis County. He was a guide at Sternberg Museum in Hays, taught classes, painted murals and back drops for exhibits, and volunteered a lot of time at the museum. He held stained glass classes and was a volunteer for the Hays Arts Council. He enjoyed his flower gardening, the arts, cooking, animals and his dogs.

He is survived by his brother, Michael Sommers, Ellis, KS; his sister, Donna Funk, Otis, KS; his stepsister, Cheryl Frederick and husband, Tom, Topeka, KS; his former sister-in-law, Sharon Sommers, Victoria, KS; his nieces and nephews, Richard Frederick (Mia); Robert Frederick; Brian Frederick; Donald Sommers (Sandra); Jamie Buehler; Phillip Funk (Jessica); Shane Sommers; Dawn Wasinger (Danny); his 14 great-nieces and great-nephews; one great-great-nephew; and a large extended group of friends.

Mitch was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Irene Sommers; his stepmother, Henrietta Sommers; his brother, Donald Sommers; and his brother-in-law, James Funk.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 27, 2023, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary, 412 Main, Victoria, Kansas 67671 with Stan Ewy S.A.M. officiating.

A private family inurnment will be held at a later.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Monday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary, Victoria, Kansas.

Robert Lee Kinderknecht

David R. “Dave” Whitman, 82, Hays, passed away peacefully, Friday, November 17, 2023, at Ellis Good Samaritan Society after a short stay in hospice.

He was born July 9, 1941, in LaRue, Ohio, the son of Carl and Lenora (McWade) Whitman. 

He graduated from LaRue High School in 1959 then attended The Ohio State University. 

In 1963, Dave enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Morocco and Guam, then from 1966-1969, he was in the U.S. Navy Reserves. 

For 17 years, he was a realtor in Denver then became a real estate appraiser until his retirement. 

On September 2, 1967, he married Jeanne Lindow in Reese, Michigan, they later divorced. On August 16, 2003, he married Kathy Gearhart in Grand Lake, Colorado. Dave and Kathy lived in Colorado until moving to Hays in March of 2023. 

He was a member of the Glenwood Springs, Colorado Elks BPOE #2086, and the Hays VFW Post #9076. 

He enjoyed snowmobiling, rafting, crossword puzzles, Budweiser beer, and trips with friends and family. Dave never knew a stranger, had a unique sense of humor and wit, and liked to have fun.

Survivors include his wife Kathy of the home in Hays, two sons, Mark Whitman and wife Joyce of Parker, CO and Michael Whitman and wife Eurie of Aurora, CO, five grandchildren, Karl, Liam, Romaro, Sophie, and Liliana Whitman, two stepdaughters, Alisha Parkhurst and husband Kent of Blackhawk, CO and Christine Stewart of Aurora, CO, two brothers, Robert Whitman and wife Carol of Marysville, OH and Charles Whitman of Hesperia, MI, and two half-brothers, Steve and John Whitman of Columbus, OH.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Kenneth “Pete” Whitman, a sister, Mary Jane Burton, a brother-in-law, Howard Burton, and two sisters-in-law, Marilee and Ruth Whitman.

Graveside services with military honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 15, 2023, at Fort Hays Memorial Gardens, with Pastor Brenda Rodger officiating.

David R. 'Dave' Whitman

Ruth Mae (Waudby) Moyer was born October 14 1924; she had just turned 99, when she passed away at Wheatland Nursing Center on November 12. 

Ruth graduated from Russell High School in 1943, and from business school at Brown Mackie Business School in Salina. 

She was married to Ernie Reissig, and they have a daughter, Mervis Reissig, who lives in Redondo Beach, CA. Later, she married Bill Moyer, and they have a son, Bill Moyer Jr., who lives in Lorraine, KS with his wife Donna. 

Ruth is also survived by six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren. 

She worked at various businesses in Russell, including the Russell Lumberyard, Jim’s Hamburger Stand, and the Russell Daily News.

 She was also a long-time volunteer for the Foster Grandparent program through Fort Hays State; and for the Methodist Thrift Shop in Russell. She was well known for her feistiness, helping others, and her honesty.

Norma Jean Buller, age 92, passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on February 7, 1931, in Verden, Oklahoma, the daughter of Leslie and Irene Nightengale Unruh.

 In 1976 she moved to Malin, Oregon, and lived there until 2000 when they moved to Fountain, Colorado.&nbsp; In 2013 she moved to Scott City, Kansas. 

She was a loving homemaker, bookkeeper, and seamstress.&nbsp;

On September 17, 1950, she married John L. Buller in Montezuma, Kansas. He passed away on December 3, 2021, in Scott City, Kansas.

Survivors include two sons - Sheldon &amp; Kim Buller of Scott City, Kansas, Jay and Cheryl Buller of Malin, Oregon, daughter - Leslie and Stan Koehn of Scott City, Kansas, 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, and stepbrother.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at Price &amp; Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas, with Pastor Don Williams presiding.&nbsp;

Myrna May (Covert) Porsch was born January 8, 1932, in Wenatchee, WA, to Harry Langford and Mable Violet (Warren) Covert. Her family lived there until she was four, when they moved to Wilbur, WA. When she was in third grade, the family moved to Harrington, WA. 

She graduated from Harrington High School in 1951 and put herself through Kelsey Baird Business School in Spokane, WA.

After graduation, Myrna worked as an administrator for Southwestern Bell Telephone in Spokane, WA, where she met her future husband Norbert Anthony Porsch, a U.S.A. Marine sergeant who was serving as an instructor at Fairchild Airforce Base. 

They were married on Oct. 15, 1955, in Harrington, WA. Their honeymoon was the adventure of their drive to Kansas in their old pickup. They settled into their home on a small farm they purchased south of Selden, KS, Norb's hometown, where they raised their four children, Kathy, Ruth, Joan, and Michael.

Myrna worked as a nurse’s aide at Sheridan Country Hospital starting in September 1963 for 34 years, and as a housekeeper for a final year before her retirement in October 1998. She moved to Colby, KS in 1995, where she lived until August 2021 when she moved to Hoxie where she remained until her death on Nov. 19, 2023.

An active volunteer in Thomas County's Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) for many years, she also regularly participated in activities at the Senior Progress Center, leading exercises, playing cards, and working on puzzles, as well as helping serve the lunches. She enjoyed her gardens, hosting card parties with friends, and family gatherings at her Colby home. After her mobility became limited, she continued to keep up with family and friends via social media and frequent telephone calls. She avidly followed her grandchildren’s sports, and her “greats” were her special treasures.

She was preceded in death by her husband Norb, brother Jim Covert, sisters Patty Covert and Harriet (Covert) Hayden, brother-in-law Doc Porsch, brother- and sister-in-law Francis and Leone Porsch, and brothers-in-law Alfred (Dink) Dinkel and Stanley Shaw.

Survivors include her children, Kathy (Marc Epard), Ruth, Joan (Bill Jenkins), and Michael (Tami) Porsch; grandchildren Robby (Amanda Turner), Tristan (Taylore), Dayton, Marissa, and Chloe Porsch; great granddaughters Henley and Amelia Porsch and great-grandson Wyatt Porsch; sisters Eileen (Glen) Tanke and Helen (Roy) Nuxol; brother-in-law Donald Hayden; sisters-in-law Mary Anna (Porsch) Dinkel and Ramona (Porsch) Shaw; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The immediate family will celebrate her life privately.

Karen Sue (Williams) Weber, 82, a resident of Burlington, Colorado and Goodland, Kansas, passed away on November 17, 2023 in Lakewood, Colorado.&nbsp; Karen was born to Ralph Waldo and Catherine Elizabeth (Reding) Williams in Shawnee, Oklahoma on June 25, 1941 (the perfect birthday).&nbsp; 

Karen grew up in Shawnee with her older brother Robert (Bob) Eugene and graduated from Shawnee High school in 1959.&nbsp; She then attended East Central State College in Ada, Oklahoma where she obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees in 1963 and 1964.&nbsp; 

It was during this time that she met Ronald Leslie Weber, to whom she was married on June 28th, 1964.&nbsp; Karen and Ron raised two children, Susan Kayleen (Weber) Fields (Tom) and Dwight Scott Weber to be the successful adults they are.&nbsp; 

She was also an aunt to three nephews Steve, Doug, and Scott and four nieces Debra, Beth, Kati, and Dena.&nbsp; After Ron died in 1988, Karen continued raising Susan and Scott.&nbsp; She was honored to be a Granny to three grandsons, Ronald James, David William, and Peter Michael Fields.&nbsp; She was also an honorary Granny to Susan’s niece Alex and three nephews Calvin, Ethan, and Robby.&nbsp; She was always invited to Fields family gatherings and included in family portraits.&nbsp; She said that Tom’s mom, Jean, was like the sister she never had.

Karen was raised in the Disciples of Christ Church in Shawnee, Oklahoma.&nbsp; While in Shawnee, she was a member of the youth group and a Chi Ro Camp Counselor.&nbsp; Ultimately, she transferred her membership to the First Christian Church in Burlington – which is also a Disciples of Christ congregation.&nbsp; She served on the board for over 20 years and was the treasurer for part of that time.&nbsp; She remained a member there until her death.

As a young girl, Karen was active in Blue Birds, Camp Fire Girls, Horizon Club, and Camp leadership for these programs.&nbsp; She also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping with her family.

During her time at East Central State College, Karen received many honors, including a School Spirit Award while she was the president of the Pep Club.&nbsp; This award usually went to a cheer leader.&nbsp; She was also a member of the Calendar Court and a campus religious leader.

Karen was a lifelong member of the National Education association (NEA), beginning with its student branch during her sophomore year of high school.&nbsp; She was elected multiple times to represent the Colorado Education Association at the NEA conventions.&nbsp; She served on a Blue-Ribbon Committee at the state level and was a member of the Resolutions committee at both the state and national levels.

Karen began her teaching career at an elementary school in Jefferson County, Colorado in the fall of 1963.&nbsp; After teaching there for one year, she moved to Walsh, Colorado where Ron was already teaching.&nbsp; She taught junior high and high school math there.&nbsp; In 1967, they moved to Burlington, where Karen continued teaching junior high and high school math.&nbsp; She moved to the middle school where she taught 5th&nbsp;and 6th&nbsp;grade math, 6th&nbsp;grade math/science, middle school Chapter 1 math and English, and 7th&nbsp;and 8th&nbsp;grade computer science.&nbsp; While teaching full-time at Burlington Middle School, she also taught literature, English, math, and sociology for Morgan Community College, Regis Community College, and Denver University remote campuses in Burlington.

Karen was certified to teach almost anything in Colorado, including library science.&nbsp; She received a computer grant from Denver University which she used to help the students in Burlington.&nbsp; She brought robots to the classroom in their early days, starting with the LEGO/LOGO robots.&nbsp; Karen was also a member of the Colorado Council of Mathematics Teachers and the East Central UniServ.&nbsp; She retired from teaching in May of 1999 after a 36-year career.

While living in Burlington, she was a member and local president of the Quo Vadis Club.&nbsp; She and Ron were also active members of the Wagon Wheelers Square Dancing Club.

&nbsp; Karen was quite the entrepreneur with Ron.&nbsp; While in Burlington, they became pioneers in the self-storage business when they built “The Attic.”&nbsp; Several years later, they were approached and asked to build another Attic in Goodland.&nbsp; When asked where the name came from, she often replied that that was where everyone stored the stuff they wanted to keep, but didn’t need in their living space.&nbsp; Several years after that, they also built K&amp;R Wash, a four-bay Car Wash in Burlington.&nbsp; When asked how she got top billing on this name, she replied that RaK didn’t spell car.&nbsp; These businesses led to a membership in both the Burlington and Goodland Chambers of Commerce.

Throughout her years in Burlington and Goodland, Karen was very active, behind the scenes, in politics.&nbsp; Karen and Ron hosted caucuses at their home.&nbsp; She was a precinct committee lady in both Kit Carson and Sherman counties.&nbsp; In the 1990s, Karen was part of the planning and development committee for the Outback Playground in Burlington.

In 1982, Karen and Ron purchased Mid America Camp Inn in Goodland, Kansas and Karen continued teaching while working at the campground.&nbsp; For many years there was also an ice business associated with the campground.&nbsp; Karen continued to own and operate the campground until her death.&nbsp; As a leader in the tourism industry, Karen became the president of the Kansas Campground Owners Association Board.&nbsp; She also held national positions at various points in time.&nbsp; She was an active member in the Northwest Kansas Travel Council, playing a key role in the creation of the Land &amp; Sky Byway that runs through Goodland and Sherman County.&nbsp; This is the only byway in the state that focuses on agriculture.

Karen also enjoyed traveling, as a child with her parents to many parts of the U.S.; with her husband to Europe three times; with her husband and children throughout the U.S.; by herself in her travel trailer to multiple corners of the U.S.; with Susan and her family on several Bahamian and Caribbean cruises, and countless trips to visit family.

Karen enjoyed researching her genealogy, tracing several lines back to the Mayflower.&nbsp; She was able to compile these records in a database she designed and shared with her family.

Karen was a nationally recognized GeoCacher.&nbsp; She logged over 3,100 finds and had 14 hides to her name.&nbsp; She introduced many to the sport and received over 600 “Favorite” points.&nbsp; As a result of her many finds and Favorites received, she was allowed to place a rare virtual cache.

Karen was proceeded in death by her parents, husband, brother, and one nephew.

Karen is survived by her daughter, Susan Fields (Tom) of Creve Coeur, Missouri; grandsons Ronny of Madison, Wisconsin and David and Peter of Creve Coeur, Missouri; and son Scott Weber of Kremmling, Colorado.

LeAnna Kay Meeks, 83, of Sabetha, KS, died on November 17, 2023, of natural causes. She was born December 25, 1939, at the country doctor’s house near Hunter, Kansas, to Elsie Mae Sigle (Hayden) and Frank Henry “Toots” Sigle, Jr. 

After graduation from Sylvan Grove High School, she attended Stormont-Vail Nursing School in Topeka and became a registered nurse. In her middle years she went back to college in the evenings at the University of Nebraska and completed a bachelor of science in nursing. She served the world as a nurse for 45 years -- her career included every facet of nursing care including emergency, intensive care, geriatric, pediatric, psychiatric, administration and regulatory compliance.

LeAnna contributed her enthusiasm and intellect to her community. She was an avid photography hobbyist, helped document athletics and activities for many years, and helped as a 4-H mom. During her years in Sylvan Grove, it was not unusual to have visitors or phone calls at all hours seeking medical advice or minor treatments. In her later years, she donated her time as a consultant to the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services. 

Her favorite recent pastime was making custom quilts for each of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-nieces, and great-nephews. She explored family genealogy and left behind a treasure-trove of family history, stories, and photographs.

The wives of her boys were "daughters of her heart" and added a special joy to her life. LeAnna and Jim especially enjoyed vacations with their grandkids. Trips in their RV and vacations with family and friends were fun and even the mishaps were entertaining. The time spent with the “grands” and their families at their schools and homes were treasured. She especially enjoyed creating Christmas plays with homemade costumes and scripts for the grandchildren to act out. She honored family traditions such as “The Daisy Chain,” which was the girl grandchildren of ancestor Daisy Mae Sigle, the Hayden/Parsons girl cousins’ gatherings, and the annual Sigle/Sperry picnic.

Camping and boating at Wilson Lake from early in their marriage to the later years with family and friends was also enjoyed despite rain, windstorms, and tornado scares. LeAnna and Jim in their retirement years enjoyed the church fellowship of the United Methodist Potawatomi Church near their home in Jackson County, Kansas.

LeAnna was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Wendell Wayne Sigle and Randall Eugene Sigle, and brothers-in-law Gene Jepsen, Rick Wolfe, and Charles Knott. 

She is survived by her husband, James Meeks, now of Sabetha, KS; sons Jamie Meeks (Betsy), Shawnee, KS, and Jerry Meeks (Christy), Sabetha, KS; grandchildren Lydia Williamson (Brock), CJ Meeks (Hannah), Emily Fischer (Joseph), Derek Meeks, and Kasey Meeks; great-grandchildren Bristol, Nora, and Tori Williamson; sisters Retha Carpenter (Paul), Linda Jepsen, and Karen Wolfe; sisters-in-law Lorna Knott and Leean McGraw (Dave); and beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

LeAnna Kay Meeks

Chico Lucero, 54, of Oakley, died November 10, 2023, at the Logan County Hospital, in Oakley, Kansas. He was born April 3, 1969 in Denver, Colorado to William and Lois (Nelson) Lucero. Chico grew up in Larkspur, Colorado, living there for most of his life until moving to Kansas in 2004 with his family.

Chico spent most of his time doing what he loved, which was working on cars, tractors, semis, anything you could fix he’d try. You could see him peddling on his bicycle around the town or spending time with his animals. If he wasn’t working he enjoyed watching any movie he could get his hands on. He enjoyed spending time with his best friend Chuck, whom he worked with.

He is survived by his children, son Anthony of Grainfield, Kansas; daughter Jessica of Grainfield, Kansas, and daughter Leilani of Colorado; three grandchildren, Connor and Claire James and Zayden Burdett; brother Joaquin Lucero; sisters, Beth, Heidi (Kevin), and Missy (Rob); and his parents, William and Lois (Nelson) Lucero.

Maxine L. Bates

Anita Louise Bassler, of Dorrance, Kansas passed away on November 17, 2023, at the&nbsp;Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, KS. She was 79 years old. Anita was born on May 9,&nbsp;1944, to Ernest Frank and Louise Bernadine (Bode) Pasek in Russell, Kansas, she was the oldest of eleven children.

Anita grew up in Dorrance and graduated from Dorrance High School in 1962. Later, she attended The American Business College in Wichita Kansas. 

Shortly after she met Richard “Rick” Bassler who Anita claims “was as cute as the guy in my dreams.” They married in 1963 and began their lives together in Wichita before moving to Salina.

 In 1971 the two relocated back to Dorrance where they purchased the old city café and opened the very popular Why-Not Tavern. They owned this for years then sold to new owners. Anita then began her career working in a lawfirm as a secretary and para-legal trainee. She worked for Michael Holland’s law firm in Russell Kansas where she continued for many years until retirement. Anita was an active member of The American Legion Auxiliary in Dorrance.

Anita is survived by her sons, Richard (LaVonna) Bassler of Topeka, KS and Randy Bassler (Cindy Cain) of Alta Vista, KS; sibilings Joan (Tom) Weinhold, Sheri (Randy) Sloan, Kenneth “Pete” (Gloria) Pasek, Larry (Kelly) Pasek, Mitchell Pasek and Connie (Richard) Urban; grandchildren, Jason Bassler, Amanda Hunninghake, Kayla Carboni , Kelsi Bassler, Sheyenne Stewart, Viktor Robinson, Coltin Robinson, Brad Pretzer, Kody Pretzer; and great-grandchildren, Connor Webber, Logan Hunninghake, Brody Hunninghake, Addilyn Fiehler, Bentley Hardten, Slade Perin, Jaxson Stewart, Rilynn Stewart, Amy Pretzer, Adrian Pretzer, Austin Pretzer, Bella Robinson, Ryelee Robinson and Newt Robinson.

She was preceded in death by her husband Rick, daughter, Kristin “Kris” Hoien; siblings, Ernie Pasek,&nbsp;Sandy Karst, Steve Pasek and Theresa Niehoff.

Visitation will be on Monday, November 27, 2023 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.PM with rosary service at 6:30 p.m. at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home in Wilson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dorrance. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Allen 'Dennis' VonLintel, age 84, of Victoria, Kansas passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at Via Christi Village Care Center, Hays, Kansas.

He was born January 7, 1939, on the family farm south of Victoria, to Robert J. and Amelia (Wasinger) VonLintel. 

He married Kathryn “Kay” (Gross) on October 20,1962, at Munjor, Kansas. She preceded him in death on April 29, 2020.

Dennis was a farmer and cattleman in the Vincent community and a member of the Saint Boniface Catholic Church. He was a 1956 graduate of Victoria High School and served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and polka dances.

Survivors include his children, Chris VonLintel and wife, Phyllis, Victoria, KS; Darin VonLintel and wife, Jennifer, Victoria, KS; Loren VonLintel and wife, Trisha, Victoria, KS; Sue Hobbs, and husband, Terry, Victoria, KS; his brothers, Robert VonLintel and wife, Gloria, Victoria, KS; Regis VonLintel and wife, Wilma, Victoria, KS; Roger VonLintel and wife, Sylvia, Erie, CO; his sister, Judy Murphy and husband, John, Gorham, KS; his grandchildren, Curtis VonLintel (Brandi); Cody VonLintel (Chelsea);&nbsp;Zach VonLintel (Sarah); Hanna Taylor (Lucas); Kelsey Rollmann (Cody); Amanda Ingham (Jacob); Tanner Hobbs and Thea Ferland; Bailey Hobbs; Autumn VonLintel; and his 16 great-grandchildren.

Sue Dulaney, a beloved resident of Phillipsburg, passed away on November 10, 2023, at Logan Manor Nursing Home in Logan, Kansas. She was 85 years old.

Sue was born on December 19, 1937, in Phillipsburg, Kansas, as the only daughter of Guy and Carolyn (Unland) Innes. 

She married H. Lee Dulaney, who preceded her in death on January 21, 1996.

Sue had an illustrious career and worked as an airline stewardess for Central Airlines, an Airline Reservationist for American Airlines, and a Real Estate Agent in Texas for 23 years. She had a deep passion for travel and was a 50-year member and past matron of the Order of Eastern Star Pleiades Chapter 168 and the First Christian Church. &nbsp;She also served on the Westview Housing Authority Board of Directors for the past many years.

Sue is survived by her son Lance Dulaney, grandson Hunter Lee Dulaney, five stepgrandchildren, Chellsie, Amber, Cody, Misty, and Jerimy, along with numerous stepgreat-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Douglas, Von, and Rodney Innes. 

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband H. Lee, brother Ronald Duane Innes, stepdaughters Laurie Lee Kelly, and Mickie Lynn Calisto.

Sue's family has planned for cremation. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 1, 2023 in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor LeRoy Herder officiating. &nbsp;Inurnment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

LaVern A. 'Ace' Leiker, formerly of Great Bend

LaVern A. “Ace” Leiker, 87, formerly of Great Bend, Kansas, died Friday, November 17, 2023 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born January 11, 1936 in Hays, the son of Leo A. and Angela (Klaus) Leiker. In 1954, he graduated from St. Joseph’s Military Academy, and on August 6, 1965 he was united in marriage to Junalie Ann Archer in Hill City, and they celebrated 42 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on September 20, 2007. 

For over 30 years, LaVern worked in oilfields for Koch Industry, retiring as a foreman. 

He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish in Great Bend and the Great Bend Knights of Columbus Council #862. He enjoyed going to car races with Junalie, fishing, and being at the lake as much as possible. He was a University of Kansas basketball and Kansas City Chiefs fan. LaVern lived simply, was a man of faith, and loved his family.

Survivors include his daughter Karla Cordes of Lawrence, two brothers, Reinhold “Ronnie” Leiker and wife Diana and Art Leiker and wife Marilyn, both of Hays, a sister, Erma Dinges of Hays, four grandchildren, Josha Cates and husband Chris, and Shannon, Easton, and Kaidon Cordes, a great-granddaughter, Jackie Cates, a great-grandson, C.J. Cates who will be born soon, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Junalie, three brothers, Herbert, Erwin “Erv”, and Kenneth Leiker, a sister, Norine Leiker, and an infant son, Ricky Leiker.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church in Hays, with Fr. Damian Richards officiating. Burial will follow in St. Francis Cemetery in Munjor. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 on Tuesday and from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 on Wednesday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. A combined vigil service and rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Donna Loree Smolik, 83, passed away November 17, 2023, at the University of Kansas Health System – Great Bend campus. She was born February 19, 1940, in Great Bend to Dan Ochs, Sr. and Violet (Shetler) Ochs. 

She married Richard Smolik September 12, 1959, in Timken, Kan.&nbsp;

Being raised on a farm north of Otis and a lifetime Rush County resident, Donna worked as a cook and dietary manager for Rush County Nursing Home (Locust Grove), LaCrosse, for 34 years. &nbsp;Developing a good work ethic at an early age, she worked at her mother, Violet's, restaurant, The Nifty Nine, and also the Tastee Freeze, all of La Crosse. She was also known to be an exceptional farm hand and an excellent cook, passing on her love of cooking to her daughter and grandchildren. 

When her children were in school, Donna attended all of their activities whenever she could and loved to watch KU basketball.&nbsp;

Donna was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Timken and attended Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend. Donna will be missed for her servant’s heart and always being ready to lend a hand where needed.

Survivors include, her husband Richard of the home; two sons, Ken Smolik and wife Kris of Great Bend and Gerald Smolik of Timken; a daughter, Mary Bieker and husband Darrell of Great Bend; four grandchildren, Scott Smolik and wife Cassie, Michael Smolik and wife Kendyll, Michala Bieker and Emma Bieker; three great-grandchildren, Olivia Smolik, Connor Smolik and Levi Smolik; and four stepgreat-grandchildren, Kadyn Schmidt, Carsyn Berggren, Brock Berggren and McKoy Berggren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Dan Ochs, Jr.; and three sisters, Leona Hanhardt, Wanda Jacobs and Norma Foos.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 21, 2023, with Altar Society Rosary at 4:00 p.m., the family to receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. and vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with Father Prakash Kola presiding. Interment will be in the Bohemian Cemetery, Timken. 

Memorials have been designated to Prince of Peace Parish, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.&nbsp;

Marilyn Meyer, 84, went to be with the Lord on Friday, November 17, 2023 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on June 24, 1939 at Great Bend the daughter of Stanley Henry and Lillian Irene (Parker) Dannebohm. 

She married her high school sweetheart Robert L. Meyer on June 16, 1957 at Ellinwood and he preceded her in death on December 11, 2017.

Marilyn attended Ellinwood schools and graduated from Ellinwood High School. 

She moved to Garden City in 1957. She worked as a sales clerk at Martin’s Maternity Wear and Little Britches/ Moods. 

She had a strong protestant faith and attended the First Assembly of God Church and the Turning Point Church of The Nazarene. She enjoyed her flower gardens, watching her squirrels and especially cooking and baking with her family and other family activities.

She is survived by her daughter- Linda and Jerry McVey of Garden City, son- Brian and Kim Meyer of Garden City, son-in-law- Daniel St Clair of Garden City, seven grandchildren- Brandon and Amber Sullivan of Garden City, Scott and Claudia St Clair of Garden City, Kristen St Clair of Kansas City, Kansas, Melissa and Aaron Swick of Houston, Texas, Jennifer and Jacob St Clair-Martinez of Hays, Jamie and Brandon Urquizo of Wichita Falls, Texas and David Meyer of Garden City and eight great-grandchildren- Austin Sullivan, Brady Sullivan, Chase Russell, Jaslene Moncada, Kaylee St Clair, Mason St Clair, Liam St Clair &amp; Brewer Urquizo.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter- Sheri St Clair and four brothers- Donald Dannebohm, Robert Dannebohm, Larry Dannebohm and Gary Dannebohm. 

Funeral Service will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home with Rev Terry Engler officiating. A private family burial will be in Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. 

Memorials are suggested to St Jude Children’s Hospital in care of Garnand Funeral Home.
