Judy Marie Abbott was peacefully called home to the Lord and to walk with the angels on Nov. 6, 2023. She was 74 years old.

She was born on Nov. 17, 1948, in Ellis to Dorothy Leiker and Isidore Augustine. Judy was a graduate of Ellis High School. She cared deeply for her family, friends and as a professional caregiver for over 30 years, those in her care as well.

She did this not out of obligation but because of who she was. Judy’s compassion was not limited to just those with two legs. Judy’s love for animals was without question and she never met a dog or cat that did not need “just one more treat."

She also had a crisp, witty, and fun sense of humor which she shared with all. When Judy let out her one-of-a-kind laugh, it was impossible not to join in.

Judy is survived by her son Dale Herrman, daughters Pamela Gonzalez, Ava Wood, and Jennifer Abbott, stepson Steven Abbott, stepdaughter Leigh Ann Schultz, brothers Charles and Patrick Augustine, son-in-law Robert Wood, daughter-in-law Sharon Herrman, 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and numerous other extended family members and friends.

Judy was preceded in death by her husband of 20 years Lou Abbott, parents Isidore and Dorothy Augustine, brother Francis Augustine, daughter Suzzane Riley, and grandson Zeke Riley.

The family would like to thank the caregivers of the Estates at Shavano Park in San Antonio, Texas, who compassionately assisted and looked after Judy in her final months.

Judy’s family asks that she be remembered for the joy she brought to others in life, not the sadness of her passing. Judy’s spirit lives on in the countless lives she touched. May she rest in eternal peace with the Lord and be reunited with her loved ones. 

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 8, 2023, at Keithley Funeral Chapel 400 E. 17th St., Ellis. Inurnment will follow in Saint Mary’s Cemetery.

Mel Duane (Holly) Holopirek, age 81, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away at his home in Maize, Kansas November 29, 2023, after an extended battle with cancer. Mel was born in La Crosse, Kansas May 10, 1942, to Ernest and Pauline (Krug) Holopirek.

 Growing up in the small town of Timken, his brothers Rick and Ken were his best teammates with sister Deb as cheerleader whether they were playing organized basketball in the Timken Grade School gym or baseball in the lot south of the family home. From a young age Mel spent many hours helping his dad at Ernie’s Oil Company. He loved summer baseball. 

Mel graduated from Bison High School participating in football, basketball, and track, then graduating from Fort Hays State College with a B.S. in business administration. 

Mel served his country in the U.S. Air Force, where he rose to the rank of Captain as a Titan II Missile Commander. 

He and Darnell Keller Heskett eloped August 17, 1969. After making their first home in Tucson, AZ , they returned home to Kansas where career opportunities led to Oakley, Colby, and Ft. Scott. 

Mel retired as vice president of Farmers Bank and Trust, Albert, Kansas in 2014.

Mel will be remembered as a man who exhibited incredible discipline. An avid jogger, he logged three to four (or more) miles a day until he was 70. Holly loved nothing more than a pick-up game of basketball with his kids–where he regularly would win–or to follow their sports activities across Kansas. After moving to Maize, Mel continued to show his love of both family and sports with his involvement in his grandchildren’s lives. Terra, Jemelle and Lander are all KSU graduates; many memorable tailgates were enjoyed in the parking lot of the Manhattan Medical Center with friends of friends always welcomed. The family and many friends loved hours of fun at Cram-A-Lot Inn at Lake Wilson.

Mel and Darnell retired to Maize in December 2014 where he could watch his grandchildren in their many sports activities. A man of God, his Life Church family was a source of joy and peace for him. Holly left a lasting impression on so many with his huge heart, authenticity, integrity, and generosity who will always be remembered as one who placed his family first in his life. 

Preceded in death by his parents, Mel is survived by his wife of 54 years, Darnell; daughters Terra (Alan) Zerr, Stillwater OK, Jemelle Ebers, Wichita, and son Lander (Kary) Holopirek, Wamego and grandchildren Steele, Shaye, and Stratten Ebers. In addition, he is greatly missed by brothers Rick (Kathy), Ken, sister Debra (Eric) Kohn, and sister and brother-in-law Ranell and Lile Lunsway as well as many nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 6, 2023, at Life Church West Wichita, 3210 N. Maize Rd., Wichita Kansas. Inurnment will be in the Fort Scott National Cemetery with military honors.

LARNED — Katherine L. George, 90, passed away on Nov. 28, 2023, at Diversicare of Larned.

She was born on April 7, 1933, in Pawnee County, the daughter of Albert and Olivia Jenisch Debes. She graduated from Zook High School in 1951.

A former resident of Boulder and Louisville, Colo., their family moved to the Larned area in 1993. She was a homemaker and a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Albert, Larned Garden Club, and Zook Community Club. Katherine loved family history, documenting photos, and organizing the family tree. She spent many hours working in her yard, enjoying her beautiful flowers, bird watching, traveling and going on the Extension trips.

On May 30, 1953, she married Lloyd W. George in Albert. He preceded her in death on Feb. 8, 1997.

Survivors include sister, Pauline (Norman) Herrmann, Kinsley; daughter-in-law, Debra George, Colo.; several nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lloyd; son, Alan George; daughter, Debbie George; brother, Bernard Debes; and two sisters, Alma Frick and Rose George.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6 at Peace Lutheran Church, Albert, with Pastor Wayne Baldyga presiding. Lynn Arlen Johnson was born Nov. 9, 1938, in Loveland, Colo., and departed this life on Nov. 29, 2023, at his home surrounded by family and his precious dog, Snookie.

Lynn was the youngest of five children born to Floyd and Hazel (Williams) Johnson.

In 1943 the family moved from Loveland, Colo., to Longmont, Colo., to pursue farming. The family moved in 1947 to Oberlin to a farm northeast of Oberlin. His education began at Saint Varian in Longmont.

After moving to the Oberlin area, Lynn attended Sunny Slope country school until eighth grade graduation. In 1952 he attended DCHS and graduated as a Red Devil in 1956.

After graduation, he spent a summer on a harvest crew that traveled from Cherokee, Okla., to Mohall, N.D. Upon returning, he was employed at Don’s Supermarket for 13 years.

Lynn wed Roberta Wurm on Sept. 27, 1959, at St. John’s Lutheran in Oberlin and were married for 61 years before Roberta’s passing. Before marrying, he completed the confirmation classes and was baptized. He was very involved over the years at St. John’s serving as a Sunday school teacher, church council board member, and elder. His walk with Christ deepened greatly in his final years. He enjoyed daily devotions with his caregiver, Chantelle, and openly spoke of his faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Lynn and Roberta were blessed with two daughters, Sherri in 1962, and Shelli in 1965. For 16 years the young family enjoyed life on a farm in Harlan Township. Some of Lynn’s favorite days were working the soil, harvesting the wheat, raising cattle, horses and hogs. He especially embraced his neighbors and built lifelong friendships.

In 1985, they sold their farm, obtained real estate licenses and were employed by Farm and Ranch Realty. Lynn was the top land salesperson for several years in a row. Johnson Reality was established on Main Street of Oberlin in 1991. They maintained a very successful business selling land and houses until their retirement in 2020.

Lynn enjoyed so many things throughout his 85 years. He was known to have nine lives, as he survived many life-threatening accidents and health issues. He loved people, gardening, long drives in the country, rodeos and horses. He loved visiting with longtime friends, having a cold one and corny jokes. But most of all, he cherished his family and good friends. Lynn was blessed with a huge 85th birthday celebration 20 days before passing. Family and friends rallied around him expressing their love and friendships. Lynn was indeed a man who left a legacy that impacted so many.

He is survived by two daughters and two sons in laws: Sherri and Terry Ramsey of Derby, and Shelli and Jay Fortin of Oberlin; four grandchildren: Josh and Lisa Fortin, Jacob and Mika Fortin, Bryson and Megan, and Bryanna Ramsey; eight great-grandchildren: Brody, Aubree, Lane, Kasen, Kruze, Olivia, Jovi, Demi; sister in law: Jackie Votapka of Clifton; Chantelle Fortin, primary caregiver and a team of outstanding caregivers: Diana, Jessica, Kristin, Mary Jane, Gabbie, Gracie, Karina, and Megan. Lynn was preceded in death by his parents: Floyd and Hazel; wife: Roberta; brothers: Lowell and Lyle; sisters: Alice Capps and infant Ardis Johnson; brother-in-law: Vidal Capps and Neil Votapka; niece: Kimberly Capps-Gautier; and parents in law: Bob and Merna Wurm.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Oberlin. Visitation will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 1 at Pauls Funeral Home, Oberlin.

Raymond Fay Baumfalk, 80, of Atwood passed away Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023, in Colby.

Raymond was born on the family farm east of Atwood on Jan. 17, 1943, to Clarence and Selma (Gray) Baumfalk. He was the youngest of three children. Brother Virgil Ray was the oldest, then sister Clara May. Raymond grew up on the farm and attended Atwood Schools.

In high school, he played football and loved to wrestle. Raymond left Kansas to ride the rodeo circuit for a few years before returning to the family farm north of Atwood to help his father. He was a hard worker and no stranger to the local sale barns.

Raymond married Patricia Lynn Pearson on Aug. 27, 1960. To this union were born two children, Jonathan Guy and Don Ray. They lived on a farm near the Achilles area for many years until a tragic farm accident placed their son Jonathan amongst the angels in heaven on June 28, 1984. 

Patricia joined Jonathan in heaven on Aug. 3, 2010. Raymond spent the majority of his life doing what he loved — farming, gardening, raising livestock and even a little coon hunting in his earlier days. He had a life full of many wild stories that would make one raise an eyebrow, but sure enough, his stories were actually true. The pet deer, Rosebud, and the pet buffalo, Spur, are prime examples.

Raymond was blessed to have a loving relationship with Bert Schmidt, which started 32 years ago. Together they built a life north of Atwood where countless numbers of memories were made for many – human and animal alike. It would always be a wild guess if one would be greeted by a Great Pyrenees or a shotgun. There wasn’t an animal Raymond nor Bert would turn away which established the Baumfalk’s Misfit Haven where countless animals were nursed back to health. Between the animals and gardening, there was never a dull moment, an adventure to be had and a memory to be made. 

Although Raymond could be described as intimidating, bullheaded, stubborn and rough around the edges for most of his life- he, enjoyed a long life, blessed with family and friends of which he truly treasured visits from. Those visits with Raymond will now be missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Selma; his siblings, Virgil Ray “Bud” Baumfalk and Clara May Oliverius; his brother-in-law, Roger Oliverius; his son, Jonathan; and his nephew, Virgil Ray (VR) Baumfalk.

Survivors include his loving companion, Bert Schmidt; son, Don (Pamela) Baumfalk of Hays; daughter, Ida (Eric) Sander of Bison, S.D.; grandsons, Joshua Baumfalk of Westminster, Colo., Johnathan Baumfalk of Hays, and Kyle Sander of Bison, S.D.; granddaughters, Alicia Baumfalk of Atwood, and Kinley Sander of Bison, S.D.; many honorary grandkids and great grandkids; as well as many other family and friends.

Per Raymond’s request, he will be laid to rest looking over his favorite hay field. A memorial gathering will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1 at the Prairie Developmental Center, DSNWK (PDC) of Atwood.

 </figure>Raymond Fay Baumfalk, 80, of Atwood passed away Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023, in Colby.Raymond was born on the family farm east of Atwood on Jan. 17, 1943, to Clarence and Selma (Gray) Baumfalk. He was the youngest of three children. Brother Virgil Ray was the oldest, then sister Clara May. Raymond grew up on the farm and attended Atwood Schools.In high school, he played football and loved to wrestle. Raymond left Kansas to ride the rodeo circuit for a few years before returning to the family farm north of Atwood to help his father. He was a hard worker and no stranger to the local sale barns.Raymond married Patricia Lynn Pearson on Aug. 27, 1960. To this union were born two children, Jonathan Guy and Don Ray. They lived on a farm near the Achilles area for many years until a tragic farm accident placed their son Jonathan amongst the angels in heaven on June 28, 1984. Patricia joined Jonathan in heaven on Aug. 3, 2010. Raymond spent the majority of his life doing what he loved — farming, gardening, raising livestock and even a little coon hunting in his earlier days. He had a life full of many wild stories that would make one raise an eyebrow, but sure enough, his stories were actually true. The pet deer, Rosebud, and the pet buffalo, Spur, are prime examples.Raymond was blessed to have a loving relationship with Bert Schmidt, which started 32 years ago. Together they built a life north of Atwood where countless numbers of memories were made for many – human and animal alike. It would always be a wild guess if one would be greeted by a Great Pyrenees or a shotgun. There wasn’t an animal Raymond nor Bert would turn away which established the Baumfalk’s Misfit Haven where countless animals were nursed back to health. Between the animals and gardening, there was never a dull moment, an adventure to be had and a memory to be made. Harvey F. Munsch, 74, Hays, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023, at HaysMed.

He was born on July 17, 1949, in Hays, the son of Edwin and Albertine (Kuhn) Munsch. In 1967, he graduated from St. Joseph’s Military Academy.

He was a sergeant in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War. On Feb. 16, 1973, he was united in marriage to Cindy Braun at St. Joseph Catholic Church, and they celebrated 50 years of marriage. Harvey was a construction superintendent, working for Pierce Schippers Construction and CV Cale Construction.

He was a member of the St. Anthony Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council #4166 in Schoenchen and a KU Jayhawks and Kansas City Chiefs fan.

Harvey enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, golfing and being outdoors. He never knew a stranger, welcomed everyone with a smile and “hi," and was always helping others. He had so much love for his family and relished every opportunity to attend his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Survivors include his wife Cindy of the home, three daughters, Heather Kaiser and husband Tyler of Hays, Mandy Tepper and husband Ari of Aurora, Colo., and Tamara Akers and husband Michael of Argyle, Texas, three brothers, Victor Munsch and wife Joyce of Hays, Clarence Munsch and wife Pat of Prairie Village, and Edwin Munsch, Jr. of Hays, three sisters, Shirley Huff of Lindsborg, Janice Cheek and husband David of Overland Park, and Agnes Myovela of Wichita, six grandchildren, Lincoln Ector and wife Brandy, Taylon Kaiser, Nolan and Briana Tepper, Eddie and Zack Akers, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Millard Joseph Moore, 98, Hays, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023, at his home.

He was born Nov. 11, 1925, in Hays, the son of Menzies M. and Mary E. (Boitnott) Moore. In 1943, he graduated from Hays High School, and on Aug. 27, 1946, he was united in marriage to Gladys Marie Meier at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays.

They celebrated 74 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on Sept. 29, 2020. Millard was an entrepreneur, a soil conservation contractor, a farmer, and always said he never worked a day in his life because he loved what he did.

His memberships included St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Joseph Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council #1325, Land Improvement Contractors of America, past president of the Kansas Land Improvement Contractors of America, Ellis County Conservation District Board, Cedar Bluff District Board, and the Four States Irrigation Council. He was a world traveler, enjoyed joyriding and seeing the countryside, and had a great love and appreciation for his family.

Survivors include his two sons, Orville Moore and Alan Moore and wife Lori, all of Hays, four daughters, Gwen Staab and husband Norman of Overland Park, Jeanette Weigel and husband Bob of WaKeeney, Shirley Bollig of Hays, and Joyce Moore and partner Jill Collins of Overland Park, 16 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Gladys, a daughter-in-law, Janel Moore, two brothers, Kenneth and Milton Moore, and three sisters, Eileen Yarnell, Louise Kertz, and Greta Worman.

Millard Joseph Moore

Roy Irvin Jacobs passed away unexpectedly at his home on Nov. 15, 2023, in McCook due to a massive heart attack. Roy’s wish for his end of life was that he died quickly, was happy, and was not alone. God granted him his wishes. He was happy in the moments before his death and was with his girlfriend Sharla.

Roy was born on Nov. 10, 1960, in Hays, to Irvin and Verna (Gross) Jacobs. He was the middle child of nine! He attended school in Hays and graduated from Hays High School in 1979. Roy served his country honorably in the U.S. Army from 1985-1989. He was an expert marksman with the M-16 rifle and in the grenade. He spent most of his service time in Germany and had many interesting tales to tell from his time in uniform.

Roy married Eileen Schumacher and to this union his only daughter, Jenna, was born. He later married Jana (Balthazor) Guthrie.&nbsp;

Roy worked many different jobs in his life. He was in the oilfields, and he also had years of experience in construction. Roy spent most of his work life, though, behind the wheel of a semi, owning and operating J&amp;S Trucking out of Phillipsburg, for 20 years. He resided in Kansas and Nebraska but was able to feed his adventurous spirit with 18 wheels. 

Adaptability and resilience were two of his many strengths. Punctuality, reliability, and taking good care of things are traits Roy not only valued on the job but honored with loved ones as well. He was most recently employed as a truck driver with Frenchman Valley Coop in McCook, Neb. He had wanted a change in life and the chance to be home every night.&nbsp; He appreciated how stress-free it allowed him to be.

Roy’s idea of heaven was fresh air, sunshine and sometimes the joy of sitting by a firepit. He was an outdoorsman at heart. Roy enjoyed country cruising and offroad adventures. He loved being on the water, boating, fishing or floating down the river and just lounging in a stock tank.

Roy was a devoted father and stepfather. He was known for his generous spirit and was always ready to lend a helping hand. Recently, he donated his time and skills to the Habitat for Humanity house in McCook.&nbsp; Notable for his goofy sense of humor and a soft spot for kids, Roy had no problem becoming a big kid himself to entertain the little ones. He had a knack for most anything hands on, whether it be under the hood of any vehicle or renovations at home, he was a natural. He leaves behind a legacy of love and will be deeply missed by family, friends and coworkers.&nbsp;

Geraldine Rita (Plante) Klein passed away on Nov. 22, 2023, at her home in Damar, at the age of 76. She was born on Aug. 23, 1947, to Edward Joseph and Adele Rosalie (Senesac) Plante in Hays.

Geraldine attended grade school and three years of high school in Damar and then graduated from Palco High School in 1968. She worked at Buck Grill in Hill City from 1969 to 1980 as a cook.

She then moved back to Palco to help take care of her father, who was ill and worked for Pat and Robert Kern from 1980 to 1983. On June 4, 1983, Geraldine married Henry Klein.

Geraldine and Henry were foster parents for several years and babysat for others. After Henry passed away in 2000, Geraldine continued to babysit and loved being with people and kids. She made the best iced tea, was a parent to many, and fed a lot of the Palco kids over the years. Always ready for a conversation, she would always say, “Tell me what you know. I know nothing. What’s new?”

Geraldine was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Damar.

She is survived by a host of cousins; and special families, Brandon and Lindsey Hamel and kids, Rylan, Weston, and Layton of Plainville and Butch and Traci Hamel and kids, Kendrix and Ryker of Hays.

Geraldine Rita (Plante) Klein passed away on Nov. 22, 2023, at her home in Damar, at the age of 76. She was born on Aug. 23, 1947, to Edward Joseph and Adele Rosalie (Senesac) Plante in Hays.<figure>

She worked at Buck Grill in Hill City from 1969 to 1980 as a cook.She then moved back to Palco to help take care of her father, who was ill and worked for Pat and Robert Kern from 1980 to 1983. On June 4, 1983, Geraldine married Henry Klein.Geraldine and Henry were foster parents for several years and babysat for others. After Henry passed away in 2000, Geraldine continued to babysit and loved being with people and kids. She made the best iced tea, was a parent to many, and fed a lot of the Palco kids over the years. Always ready for a conversation, she would always say, “Tell me what you know. I know nothing. JoAnn J. (Dietz) Kilian, 75, of Russell, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2023, at the Russell Regional Hospital.

JoAnn was born Feb. 27, 1948, in Russell. She was the daughter of Jacob and Freda (Batt) Dietz. She lived her whole life in Russell. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Bender Hill Lutheran Church, later became a member of St. John Lutheran Church. She attended Lincoln Grade School in the Milberger area, graduated from Russell High School and attended Fort Hays State University.

JoAnn was united in marriage to Gary L. Kilian on Nov. 22, 1969, in Russell.&nbsp; This union was blessed with two children, Kristi and Kory.

JoAnn worked at the Home State Bank for many years, the Russell Livestock and Back To Nature in Hays. She farmed and had a cow-calf operation with her son Kory. She also cleaned homes in the Russell area for over 40 years. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday school and Bible study when her children were young.&nbsp; Later she was active in the Church Altar Guild. She enjoyed cooking for family and friends. Her greatest pride and joy were her children and grandchildren. One of her favorite phrases was, “take one day at a time” whenever life presented a challenge.

JoAnn’s surviving family includes her daughter, Kristi Brungardt (Chris) of Russell; son, Kory Kilian of Russell; and three grandchildren, Kaitlyn Nicole Noble (Marc), Grace Kilian and Ryan Kilian.

JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents.

Celebration of JoAnn’s Life will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 8 at St. John Lutheran Church. Burial of ashes will follow at the Russell City Cemetery.&nbsp; 

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, with the family present to greet friends from 6 to 7 p.m.&nbsp; A memorial has been established with St. John Lutheran Church.

Maxine Marie Greene, 63, of Hays passed away on Saturday, Nov. 25, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society Care Center in Hays.&nbsp;

She was born Nov. 18, 1960, in Lincoln, Kan., to Bill Gene and Eldora Marie (Deneke) Cole.&nbsp; She married Andrew “Andy” Greene on May 14, 1983, in Lincoln.

She and her husband owned and operated Greene’s Upholstery. She was a seamstress and would work on car seats, car tops, interiors, furniture, covers and anything else that could be sewed. &nbsp;

Maxine was a 1978 graduate of Lincoln High School, attended Kansas State University and moved to Hays in 1984. She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, convertibles, reading and her family.&nbsp;

She is survived by her husband, Andy Greene, of the home; her daughter, Marci Greene, Colorado Springs, Colo.; her brothers and sister, Jim Cole and his wife, Paula, Greenville, Wis.; Ken Cole And wife, Jaynell, Russell; Don Cole and wife, Jan, Wilmar, Minn.; Bob Cole and wife, Kim, Andale; Jo Ann Mote and her husband, Tracy, Weskan; Dave Cole and wife, Sharon, Norfolk, United Kingdom; her mother-in-law, Edoline Jane Greene, Scottsdale, Ariz.; her nieces and nephews; her great-nieces and great-nephews; and her little four-legged friend, Walker.

Maxine Marie Greene

Merle Raymond McLaren,94, of Hays, passed away Monday, Nov. 27, 2023, in Hays. He was born Dec. 23, 1928, in Chicago, Ill., to David and Blanche (Beique) McLaren.

On Jan. 16, 1954, he married Betty Lou Schemm in Wichita. They celebrated 67 years together before her passing on Oct. 14, 2021. Merle left school at 16 years old to help take care of the family after his dad passed but did continue his education later in life ending with a bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays State University.

He later joined the U.S. Air Force and retired after 23 years of service to his country. His service included both Korea and Vietnam in which he received numerous accommodations, including a Bronze Star.

He owned McLaren Lincoln-Mercury-GMC in Hays for 18 years and was one of the original business owners to push for expansion north of I-70. Merle was a member of the Hays VFW and an active member of the Honor Guard. He received a Quilt of Valor. He was chosen as Hays All-American Citizen in 2018, but his greatest joy was family and taking care of his grandkids.

Betty L. (Schemm) McLaren, 87, of Hays, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2021, at Hays Medical Center, Hays. She was born March 21, 1934, in WaKeeney, the daughter of Joseph and Eva (Schwien) Schemm. Betty was a homemaker and a selfless mother. Her primary concern in life was always the welfare of her family.

She loved people in general and doted on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a graduate of Trego High School, WaKeeney. Her husband, Merle, was a career member of the USAF, and together with their growing family traveled to many areas of the free world.

Survivors include their children, Terrence K. McLaren and wife, Carla, Cape Coral, Fla.; Laurie A. Johnson and husband, Kris, Hawaii; Debra A. McLaren, Hays; Erin P. Filbert, Ness City; Nita M. Leanna (Tindall) Linden, loving mother, grandmother and devoted friend to many, passed away peacefully on Nov. 25, 2023, at 86.

She was born Nov. 10, 1937, in Ransom, the elder daughter of Eldon and Irene (McKenzie) Marcy. Early in her life, her family moved from a Trego County farm to a farm near Selkirk in Wichita County.

She was active in 4-H throughout her youth. She was very proud that she had raised, then shown at the Kansas State Fair, a hog that won overall State Grand Champion. She attended high school in Leoti, graduating in 1955, then graduated from The Dominican School of Nursing, in Great Bend, becoming a registered nurse in 1958.

Her love of nursing and helping others carried her through her 45-year career, most of which was spent at Lane County Hospital, in Dighton. She came to Dighton in 1972 with her husband, Bill Tindall, and son, Randy Tindall. She provided Lane County residents loving care for almost 30 years, including doing double-duty for about 10 years as the USD 482 school nurse.

She was honored to be elected to serve for several years on Dighton’s City Council. She loved her community and the people who made Dighton a wonderful place to live. Bill passed in 1980, She later married Arnold Linden, and they had many good years together.

Leanna enjoyed bowling, bingo, crochet, supper club and rooting for the Royals, Chiefs and Wildcats. In her younger adult years, she enjoyed traveling the world. She and Bill went on many trips, including tours of Europe, the Caribbean, and South America.

She was preceded in death by Bill and Arnold, and her only sibling, her sister, Aneth, who lived in Wichita.

She is survived by Randy, his wife, Renee, and four grandchildren; Kendall, Cassandra, Kallista and Ethan, all of whom live in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A celebration of life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 at Dighton’s Bible Fellowship Church, followed immediately by a graveside service at Dighton Cemetery, then lunch at the church. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at Boomhower Funeral Home.

Kayleen A. Haselhorst, age 73, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2023, at Redbud Village - Plainville.

Kayleen Haselhorst, lovingly known as Kay, passed away peacefully on Nov. 26, 2023, at Redbud Village, Plainville. She was born on Aug. 28, 1950, in Damar to her loving parents, Albert and Rosa Hamel.

Kay was surrounded by her family and priest in her final moments. Throughout her life, Kay found joy in various hobbies and interests. She loved spending time playing bingo, exploring auctions, indulging in home shopping adventures, and taking the time to primp and look her best. These activities brought her immense happiness and allowed her to connect with others who shared similar passions.

Kay leaves behind a legacy of love and fond memories. She is survived by her life partner, Danny Lamb. The two fell in love and worked and lived side by side for over 40 years. Danny stood alongside her in thick and thin and their bond was one filled with deep affection and unwavering support.

Kay was mother to Wendy Porembski and Dallas Haselhorst. She spoke of her children often and was proud of their successes. She loved them endlessly and treasured every moment spent with them. She leaves this world knowing that her love was special and that she deserved to be cherished.

She leaves behind six granddaughters: Lauren Benjamin, Carly Benjamin, Gianna Haselhorst, Aria Haselhorst, Ellia Haselhorst, and Ayla Haselhorst. She would have loved more time with them all. In her final months, she would constantly ask to look at pictures of them and want to talk for hours about the details of their lives and what they enjoyed doing.

She described her trips to radiation with Lauren as the thing that made her happiest. Kay was the youngest of eight children raised on the family farm. Her siblings: Albert Jr. Hamel and his wife Rosie who are both deceased, Betty McNabb who is deceased, Gene Hamel who died just a year ago and his wife Avis, Tina Bobek and her husband Bill who is deceased, Alvin Hamel, Ron Hamel and his wife Mary Lou who is deceased, and Dorothy Staab and her husband Bob. All her siblings were very important to her. Almost as much as her family, Kay adored her fur babies: Keyma, Cookie, and Kitty; who all preceded her in death. They brought so much joy and love into her life that she called out for them during her final days. &nbsp;

A Mass celebrating Kay's life will be on Dec. 9 at St Joseph Catholic Church in Damar. The service will begin at 10 a.m. to honor her memory. The church is at 107 Oak St., Damar, KS 67632.  </figure>Kayleen Haselhorst, lovingly known as Kay, passed away peacefully on Nov. 26, 2023, at Redbud Village, Plainville. She was born on Aug. 28, 1950, in Damar to her loving parents, Albert and Rosa Hamel.Kay was surrounded by her family and priest in her final moments. Throughout her life, Kay found joy in various hobbies and interests. She loved spending time playing bingo, exploring auctions, indulging in home shopping adventures, and taking the time to primp and look her best. These activities brought her immense happiness and allowed her to connect with others who shared similar passions.Kay leaves behind a legacy of love and fond memories. She is survived by her life partner, Danny Lamb. The two fell in love and worked and lived side by side for over 40 years. Danny stood alongside her in thick and thin and their bond was one filled with deep affection and unwavering support.Kay was mother to Wendy Porembski and Dallas Haselhorst. She spoke of her children often and was proud of their successes. She loved them endlessly and treasured every moment spent with them. She leaves this world knowing that her love was special and that she deserved to be cherished.She leaves behind six granddaughters: Lauren Benjamin, Carly Benjamin, Gianna Haselhorst, Aria Haselhorst, Ellia Haselhorst, and Ayla Haselhorst. She would have loved more time with them all. In her final months, she would constantly ask to look at pictures of them and want to talk for hours about the details of their lives and what they enjoyed doing.She described her trips to radiation with Lauren as the thing that made her happiest. Kay was the youngest of eight children raised on the family farm. Her siblings: Albert Jr. Hamel and his wife Rosie who are both deceased, Betty McNabb who is deceased, Gene Hamel who died just a year ago and his wife Avis, Tina Bobek and her husband Bill who is deceased, Alvin Hamel, Ron Hamel and his wife Mary Lou who is deceased, and Dorothy Staab and her husband Bob. All her siblings were very important to her.
